Each of these cities experienced positive growth compared to 2022, indicating a strong rebound in tourism and an increasing global interest in their attractions.

Let's kick off this journey in the Big Apple! With the hustle and bustle of city life, New York City(NYC) presents itself with features that undoubtedly make it an exciting place for visitors. Central Park , a remarkable spread of green, spans 843 acres, and sights of yoga classes or horse carriages are to be expected. Now, when you think of towering structures, NYC doesn't disappoint. With over 400 skyscrapers dotting its skyline, there's no doubt that the city reaches impressive heights. You can soak up the sun on beaches that line the Emerald Coast in the Florida Panhandle, the western Gulf Coast, or the Atlantic, enjoy the rides in Orlando, or have a blast in Miami's South Beach culture. Mostly, Florida is all about getting away and basking in its famous sunshine, which is a massive draw in the wintertime for Americans in most of the rest of the country.

The drive down the coast of California on California Highway 1, aka the Pacific Coast Highway, is legendary. The road through Big Sur and the Central Coast, covering about 163 miles from Carmel to San Simeon, is a visual feast of winding turns and cliffs with the waves of the blue Pacific as a backdrop. (It takes about three hours to drive.) It's been memorialized in song, film, and books, and it's just simply one of the most unforgettable places in the United States. The numbers are in: new data reveals how u.s. cities stack up in resonance’s annual list of the best in the country..

Many factors that make the biggest cities in the United States great places to visit—good weather, world-class museums, and quality restaurants—also make them great cities to live in. Resonance , a consultancy group in real estate, tourism, and economic development, considered these factors as well as user-generated data from social media to create a comprehensive ranking of the best cities in the United States for travelers and residents.

This year, for the ninth annual list, the organization has also partnered with Ipsos for “perception-based data,” according to Resonance Consultancy President and CEO Chris Fair. That means “exploring what a city offers versus how it is perceived by the broader population, says Ipsos Executive Vice President, Head of U.S. Corporate Reputation Jason McGrath. “By merging the top-of-mind destinations where people tell us they want to live, work, and visit with the rigorous evaluation of place that Resonance has been conducting for nearly a decade, we have created a more comprehensive evaluation of cities and can better advise destinations on how to strengthen their reputation,” he adds.

How the cities are ranked

To determine which cities would be considered for this list, Resonance looked at U.S. cities with populations of more than 500,000. Each city was ranked based on a combination of core statistics and user-generated data from the likes of Tripadvisor and Instagram. Everything comes together for its proprietary Place Power Score.

In previous years, cities were ranked in six categories (People, Place, Product, Programming, Promotion, and Prosperity) but in 2024 they’re ordered by three larger pillars: Livability, Lovability, and Prosperity. In addition to Resonance’s data, Ipsos surveyed 2,000 adults on these topics, asking three key questions:

Livability: What are the top three towns or cities you would most like to live in?

Lovability: What are the top three towns or cities you would most like to visit?

Prosperity: Which three towns or cities do you think offer the best job opportunities?

These are the best cities in the United States to live in and visit in 2024, according to Resonance and Ipsos.

1. New York City

Highlighted rankings: Livability (1), Prosperity (1)

Why we love it: New York City has (once again) taken the top spot in Resonance’s annual rankings. Make no mistake: Being at the top for the past few years is no easy feat. But the Big Apple has proved its staying power with renovated airports, world-class hotels , and museums enticing people to see the city.

Nowadays, there’s a lot to explore in NYC’s neighborhoods . Museums like the beloved Met and the Louis Armstrong House Museum in Queens have undergone renovations and expansions in recent years alongside the introduction of new destinations like the Bronx Children’s Museum, the Museum of Broadway, and the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center . Meanwhile, Central Park, the High Line, the Little Island —located on the Hudson near the Meatpacking District—and other outdoor spaces entice you to come outside to relax. Midtown Manhattan has also made a comeback with a revamped Tiffany’s, new hotels, and the opening of the Museum of Broadway. Getting here is even easier, too. As Resonance notes, Newark Liberty International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, and John F. Kennedy International Airport all have new terminals.

2. Chicago, Illinois

Highlighted rankings: Livability (2), Prosperity (3)

Why we love it: There’s plenty to celebrate in Chicago. The Resonance report notes its summer of world-class festivals, including Lollapalooza and the free Millennium Park Summer Music Series, as well as the 160 breweries. We love the city’s dining scene, with noteworthy restaurants including Venteux, a French brasserie from Michelin-starred chef Donald Young, and Bazaar Meat and Bar Mar under chef José Andrés. Live music has also fully bounced back post-pandemic. Check out the Salt Shed, based in a former factory warehouse, to get your fix.

We wouldn’t expect any less from a city that’s historically been able to thrive in the midst of adversity. More than 150 years ago, the Great Fire destroyed over 2,000 acres of central Chicago and left nearly 100,000 people without homes. But the city hasn’t let disaster define it; instead, it’s met obstacles with a resilience you need to see for yourself .

“Chicago sees itself, since the fire, as a city able to withstand whatever,” Shermann Dilla Thomas, a historian and lifelong resident who offers guided Chicago tours, told Afar . “It also makes us a city that doesn’t believe in small plans. After you get a blank canvas, the sky’s the limit.”

3. Los Angeles, California

Why we love it: While Hollywood’s prowess is the most commonly associated aspect of Los Angeles, the city’s restaurant scene in all its richness and diversity is just as intertwined with L.A.'s identity. Vanguards like La Cha Cha Chá, Alma, and even LA Plaza Cocina (a museum and teaching kitchen that honors Mexico’s culinary heritage) offer outstanding dining experiences. Museums rank no. 2 only behind NYC, with the Broad, the Grand, and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures all well worth a visit.

Big events are heading this way, too. The city will host some 2026 FIFA World Cup games, the NBA All-Star Game that same year, and the Olympic Games in Summer 2028.

4. Miami, Florida

Highlighted rankings: Livability (3), Prosperity (11)

Why we love it: Miami has historically been a meeting point for the Americas, making it a no-brainer that it ranked high on the list. But in this city, diversity goes beyond nationality; the city’s allure for the LGBTQ community and ex–Silicon Valley techies gives it a sense of welcome that many people are embracing.

In 2023 Miami moved into the top 10 for the first time, and this year it jumps from sixth to fourth. While it could rest on its open-minded reputation and beachside location to draw people, the city is also putting in the work to stay relevant. A new Waldorf Astoria Hotel is set to open in 2027, the most prominent construction amid a raft of new development.

5. Las Vegas

Highlighted rankings: Livability (7), Prosperity (16)

Why we love it: Vegas—a new entry in the top 10—was ranked the second-most lovable city in America, so perhaps it’s not surprising it was visited by almost 41 million people in 2023. What happens here might stay here, but its reputation precedes it.

Those visitors have even more options for accommodation and entertainment than ever before, including the $4.3 billion Resorts World Las Vegas (comprising three hotels) and the hotly anticipated Fontainebleau, which is “the largest residential/hotel structure on the strip,” according to Resonance, and boasts a casual 36 restaurants. Oh yeah, and then there’s The Sphere . And, from 2028, there will be a high-speed train to Vegas from Rancho Cucamonga in the Los Angeles area.

Why we love it: San Francisco has long drawn people and companies alike—Afar included—to the West Coast. Thanks to the Bay Area’s world-renowned universities like Stanford and UC Berkeley, San Francisco has one of the most educated and prosperous populations. While the city’s lack of affordable housing cannot be ignored, the migration of big companies to lower-taxed havens like Texas and Florida has produced a silver lining in lower house prices and rents .

As Resonance points out, “The city is rolling out the most daring bike and pedestrian infrastructure in America and unlocking the public space potential of places like the Presidio (featuring the new Presidio Tunnel Tops , a 14-acre park built over the Presidio Parkway highway tunnels).”

Why we love it: Boston is home to more than 75 institutions of higher learning—including Harvard and MIT—giving it the top spot in the University category and a high ranking in the Educational attainment category. But it’s not only students who come to Boston. As the oldest large city in America, it draws millions of tourists each year to see historical landmarks along the Freedom Trail , including the USS Constitution and the King’s Chapel .

The old city is getting some upgrades, including a 5,000-room increase in the next six years across planned hotels like the 1,055-room Omni Boston Hotel and the Raffles Boston. Things are also cooking in the entertainment realm, with Live Nation’s construction of MGM Music Hall at Fenway. This 5,000-seat concert hall, which opened in August 2022, extends the legendary ballpark to accommodate four new levels of event space.

Why we love it: Unsurprisingly, the nation’s capital scores well for its many free museums, including the National Museum of African American History and Culture and other Smithsonian institutions like the National Air and Space Museum. In addition to all of its exhibitions are many neighborhoods worth exploring —Brookland, NoMa, Shaw, and the LGBTQ-friendly Logan Circle, to name a few—that show the city isn’t relying on its history to attract locals and visitors.

What makes D.C. a city worth visiting now is new developments—$9.6 billion of them, says Elliott Ferguson, president and CEO of Destination DC. “The city has added new hotels, museums, rooftops, Michelin-rated dining, and more for travelers to explore.”

It’s easy to see why it’s so popular. For starters, the food is some of the best in the Lone Star state . Then there are the festivals, including film fests and Juneteenth bashes, and starting next year, the city will be home to the first Ismaili Center in the United States, a space “designed to embody a spirit of openness and dialogue.”

Florida certainly has no shortage of beautiful beaches, but few places have the blindingly white sand and Caribbean-blue waters you’ll find in and around this town. Head to the nearby barrier islands for the best (and least crowded) stretches of sand: Pensacola Beach on Santa Rosa Island is often cited as the crown jewel of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, complete with dolphin-rich waters and sand so soft you’d swear you were walking on baby powder. Back on the mainland, spend an afternoon walking through the Chappie James Museum—a must-visit site that honors Daniel “Chappie” James Jr., a Tuskegee Airman who became the first African American to become a four-star general in any branch of the military.

7. St. Augustine

History lovers often flock to Savannah and Charleston to marvel at old buildings and ancient trees, but those cities are practically babies compared to St. Augustine. Founded in 1565, this Spanish-influenced city shines with its ​​colonial architecture and old brick streets—not to mention historic treasures like Flagler College and the imposing Castillo de San Marcos—but the drinking and dining scenes here are totally modern. Be sure to grab some sunset cocktails at The Reef (preferably after surfing at Vilano Beach.)

After a pandemic that found many of us escaping to the great outdoors, readers continue to be drawn to Aspen. It’s home to some of the best ski slopes in the US—and some of the best resorts, too. Start with a walk along its cobblestoned historic district past horse-drawn carriages and ornate architecture, or find shade under live oak trees drooping with Spanish moss. Book in advance to nab a room at the Gastonian , a historic bed and breakfast just two blocks from 30-acre Forsyth Park . And for a fantastic dining experience, go to The Grey , an elegantly reborn former Greyhound Bus depot, where James Beard Award–winning chef Mashama Bailey serves elevated takes on Southern classics, like foie gras and grits and tempura-fried catfish.

Want to get in on a secret? Plan a trip to Greenville now and you might see it just on the cusp of stardom. The food lover’s town has a farm-to-table scene that continues to rise in the ranks (try Jianna for Italian and freshly shucked oysters, and Vault & Vator, the city's first speakeasy, for a strong, well-crafted cocktail), and its craft beer scene is seeing a similar explosion. Paired with its dynamic urban spaces are abundant natural resources, including 32-acre Falls Park, which runs through the middle of town, and the Swamp Rabbit bike trail—now at a whopping 22 miles and counting.

Washingtonians are all in on the secret, but it’s no surprise the rest of the world is catching up: Alexandria, Virginia, the charming, historic city just across the Potomac River from our nation's capital , draws travelers and would-be residents alike. Most folks start to imagine moving there immediately after setting foot in Old Town, once they’ve strolled the red-brick sidewalks, clocking street after street of perfectly preserved rowhouses from the 18th and 19th centuries. While its robust F&B scene , which includes a steady annual circuit of nationally recognized food and culture festivals, continues to be a draw, visitors are rarely prepared for the city's good looks. Stately homes, cobblestone streets, waterfront views, and an abundance of flowering window boxes only add to its welcoming vibe. Find a seat among its many outdoor terraces for a drink and some fresh oysters (we recommend hitting the Ordinary ), and try to resist the urge to up and move here.

Sure, you’ll find some familiar names on this list of the best big cities in the US, but go beyond what you might expect and you’ll find some surprising gems that are always a good idea for a reason.

With an abundance of dreamy beaches, Art Deco architecture, and incredible Cuban food, Miami was once again voted one of the best cities in the US this year. And while some of its beloved clichés (think expensive cars and neon bikinis) can still be found, the Magic City is so much more than a party destination. Art lovers are spoiled for choice when it comes to museums ( Pérez Art Museum Miami is a stand-out), while travelers seeking chic cafes and vinyl shops will feel right at home in the Wynwood Arts District .

9. Washington, D.C.

Washington, D.C. may have finally shed its buttoned-up reputation. Yes, we're still riding the high from the 2016 opening of the National Museum of African-American History and Culture , designed by world-renowned British-Ghanian architect David Adjaye. But then came the smartly revitalized Wharf, with its can't-miss waterfront views, and the arrival of hotel Eaton , which prioritizes activism instead of pillow mints—not to mention the city’s stylish Airbnbs. Suddenly, we can't seem to get enough of the place. Something's brewing in D.C., and it's not just the craft beer.

8. Nashville

A southern city with a small-town feel, you might find that a weekend isn’t enough to get all you can out of Nashville . Music City is known for its legendary honky tonks on Lower Broadway, but be sure to take time away from the buzz of the strip to explore the city’s shops and restaurants . You’ve likely heard of Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack , but also stop into Hatch Show Print , which has been creating show posters for Nashville’s biggest venues for more than 140 years, to check out their vintage letterpress machinery and take home a piece of Nashville history.

New York City buzzes as though perpetually caffeinated (and most of its residents probably are)—packed with people moving, creating, and making the most of every block. For one of the oldest cities in the US, Boston sure has aged with style. To get a quick refresher on our nation’s history, walk the Freedom Trail , a 2.5-mile route along a string of historic sites that takes you through the country’s founding. Other activities worth adding to your itinerary include slurping up oysters at Neptune , visiting the eclectic salon-style art display at the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum , and catching a ball game at Fenway Park . Just be sure to learn the words to “Sweet Caroline” before you go.

5. San Francisco

While San Francisco is on the small side for a major city, at just 49 square miles, it packs a punch. Yes, there’s Alcatraz and the famed Golden Gate Bridge , but you could also spend a whole day wandering through the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art or discovering street art in the character-filled Mission District. Treat yourself to some pampering at one of the city’s fantastic spas , or head north and take in the majesty of the redwoods in Muir Woods . Add in some of the best restaurants and bars in the world and a hotel scene that truly has something for everyone, and you’ll likely find that one visit to the city by the bay just isn’t enough.

4. New Orleans

It's easy to experience New Orleans through its most popular attractions: Mardi Gras and Bourbon Street, Cafe du Monde (which is great, don't get us wrong), and Preservation Hall jazz (also fantastic). But there's so much more to this soulful city. Its Creole, Cajun, and French roots inform everything from the music on Frenchman Street to the food and cocktails in the French Quarter over to the Bywater. It's also worth exploring the revitalized Warehouse District, home to the city's Ace Hotel , where you could easily stumble on half a dozen excellent galleries all within a few blocks' radius, or spend a whole day in contemplation at the National WWII Museum .

3. Milwaukee

So much more than just a day trip from Chicago , Milwaukee has many (if not all) of the same qualities that make other cities on this list buzz—and then some. Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, the city’s surprisingly eco-diverse location makes it a hotbed of locavore cuisine. A spate of award-winning restaurants have helped Milwaukee shed its beer-and-cheer reputation, though you can still get your fill of both between fine dinners. The dedicated revitalization of neighborhoods such as the historic Third Ward and Lincoln Village has also kept visitors busy with specialty shops, galleries, and more creative businesses.

2. San Diego

Several years ago, travelers headed to San Diego might have wondered what they would do in the city, besides hitting the beaches . No longer. With a recent string of hot hotel openings (like the Guild and the Carté) and a legit food scene that offers up some of the best Mexican dishes and seafood platters you'll ever taste, San Diego has officially stepped out from the shadow of its big sister to the north, earning world-class destination status that goes well beyond the waves. It’s no secret that the United States is packed with popular places. From coast to coast, you’ll find a wide variety of sites brimming with excitement. Most of them are world-famous, meaning you’ve probably heard of them before, but you might find a few unfamiliar.  

From tourist attractions and historical buildings to US national parks and famous destinations, this roundup of the most visited places in the United States has a little bit of everything.

1. Times Square, New York

Times Square in NYC is one of the most visited destinations in the US -– as well as the whole world. This commercial junction connects Broadway, Seventh Avenue, and 42nd Street (one of the most famous streets in New York ) — other very popular areas in the city. It’s an entertainment hub stuffed full of shops, eateries, and theatres. 

Times Square is well known for its towering buildings lined with billboards; they illuminate the whole area and dazzle at night. It’s one of the most energetic and beautiful places in NYC .

You can’t visit the Big Apple and not see Central Park. This sprawling green space is synonymous with the city, and it’s been that way for a long time. It’s one of the most historical places in NYC . The park opened in 1858, and it’s been attracting outdoor enthusiasts ever since.

The park is bigger than the principality of Monaco. It’s dotted with attractions and facilities. With lakes, ponds, statues, monuments, carriage rides, and thousands of benches, it provides the full park experience. Grab a coffee from a nearby cafe and enjoy a leisurely walk through one of the world’s most famous parks. 

3. Niagara Falls, New York

Niagara Falls is the name of a city and a vast waterfall that straddles the border of New York state and Canada. It’s one of the most popular cascades in the world, attracting millions of visitors each year. 

There are lots of fun ways to explore this outdoor area. If you visit Niagara Falls State Park, you can see the Observation Tower and view the 3 other waterfalls in that area: American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, and a section of Horseshoe Falls. 4. Washington Union Station, Washington D.C.

Washington Union Station is a popular train station and transportation hub located in Washington, D.C. It opened in 1908 and featured elegant architecture with gleaming marble and soaring ceilings. 

This building had to undergo major restorations in the 1980s, but the original character of the station was preserved. It’s worth checking out for the architecture and design alone, but if that’s not something you fancy, you can visit countless shops and eateries too. 

5. National Mall and Memorial Park, Washington, D.C

National Mall and Memorial Parks contain many Washington D.C. landmarks . Some of the most popular include the Washington Monument, the World War One Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Ford’s Theatre National Historic Site. 

These attractions represent some of the United States’ most significant events and people. They honour the bravery and sacrifices of those who have served their country. It’s one of the best places to learn about America. 

6. White House, Washington D.C.

The White House is one of the world’s most famous landmarks . Located in the nation’s capital, at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, it’s the official workplace and residence of the president of the US. It has housed every single commander-in-chief since John Adams took office in 1800.

The construction of this grand building lasted from 1792 to 1800. Although, over the years, it’s gone through quite a few refurbishing and expansion projects. 

Fun Fact: The White House contains 132 rooms, 35 bathrooms, 28 fireplaces, and 8 staircases.

7. Grand Canyon, Arizona

Arizona’s Grand Canyon is one of the most mesmerising products of Mother Nature. This natural formation shows off millions of years of geological history. This Arizona landmark is enormous in scale; it’s even bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island. 

Pictures just don’t do this place justice; it’s the site you must see and experience for yourself.  Spend the day hiking and taking in the jaw-dropping sights. You can also take a scenic aeroplane tour and see this natural wonder from above. 

While you’re in Arizona don’t miss the stunning sunsets in Tucson and sunsets in Sedona .

8. Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park is a stunning wilderness recreation area. It’s found mostly in Wyoming, although it spreads into sections of Montana and Idaho too. 

The dramatic topography is made up of canyons, rivers, forests, hot springs, and geysers. One of the most famous geysers is Old Faithful, which has erupted approximately every 44 minutes to 2 hours since 2000. 

The park is also home to hundreds of animal species, including bears, bison, wolves, elk, and antelope. 

9. Florida Keys, Florida

The Florida Keys are an archipelago of tropical islands about 120 miles (193 km) off the coast of Florida. It’s a hot spot for fans of snorkelling, scuba diving, boating, and just about any other water activity you can think of. 

Key West is the most famous of the islands. It’s popular with sun-worshippers in search of an exciting beach vacation. Other well-known islands include Key Largo, Marathon, and Islamorada.

10. Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite National Park is one of the numerous amazing places in California that’ll leave you breathless. Located in the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range, the natural scenery is as dramatic and gorgeous as it gets. With calm lakes, ancient sequoia trees, and picturesque vistas, you’ll be treated to incredible views everywhere you look. 

Some of the most well-known areas of the National Park include El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Falls. There’s also Yosemite Village, which features rustic shops, restaurants, and accommodations. 

11. Big Sur, California

The Big Sur region is an undeveloped section of the coastline along California’s central coast. It stretches for about 71 miles (114 km) between San Simeon and Carmel-by-the-Sea. It’s often referred to as the most scenic coastal route in the US. 

On one side, you have the Pacific Ocean; on the other, you have the rugged Santa Lucia Mountains. Dotted throughout are redwood forests and beaches. Besides sightseeing along the highway, Big Sur offers hiking trails, camping sites, and accessible beaches.  

Big Sur is one of the best places to stop on a road trip from Los Angeles to San Francisco and is also home to one of California’s best sunsets.

12. Disneyland, California

The Disneyland theme park is in Anaheim, California. It’s the original park opened by the Walt Disney Company, and it’s the only one to have been designed and built under the supervision of Walt Disney. Throughout the years, it’s undergone many expansion and renovation programs. 

Today, it contains different themed sections, including Adventureland, Frontierland, Fantasyland, New Orleans Square, Critter Country, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Mickey’s Toontown, and Tomorrowland. As with all the other Disney parks, it’s popular with all ages due to its abundance of attractions. 

13. Hollywood Walk of Fame, California

The Hollywood Walk of Fame is a historical landmark in California with more than 2,700 stars. They’re embedded in the sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, California.

This free attraction runs for about 15 blocks, or 1.3 miles (2.1 km). The names on the stars represent a mix of real and fictional people. They include actors, musicians, directors, producers, and fictional personalities.

Fun Fact: The first star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame was laid in 1960. It was dedicated to Academy Award-winning actress Joanne Woodward. 

14. Golden Gate Bridge, California

The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the world’s most beautiful bridges . It spans the Golden Gate, a one-mile (1.6 km) wide strait connecting San Francisco Bay with the Pacific Ocean. It links the city of San Francisco with Marin County. 

The bridge opened in 1937 to serve car, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic. It’s an iconic symbol of San Francisco and one of the most impressive engineering achievements in modern times.

Fun Fact: The Golden Gate Bridge gets its name from the body of water it crosses over, not the shade it’s painted. The official color of the bridge is called international orange.

Pier 39 is another popular spot in San Francisco. It’s a shopping centre and tourist attraction set right on one of the city’s piers. It contains eateries, a video arcade, a carousel, street performers, the Aquarium of the Bay, and more. Pier 39 is a tourist hot spot that stays busy almost all hours of the day. 

It’s also a popular spot for sightseeing. You can view sea lions casually sunbathing on the docks right off the pier. And further out, the pier supplies incredible views of San Francisco Bay, including Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Bay Bridge.

16. Venice Beach, California

Venice Beach showcases the quintessential laid-back California lifestyle. Backed by the Pacific Ocean and dotted with palm trees, this is the ultimate place for fun in the sun. 

Visiting the Venice Beach Boardwalk is a must. It stretches for over two miles (3 km) and is lined with hundreds of street vendors, restaurants, bars, and street performers. While you wander, you can stop at an outdoor eatery for food, drinks, and a bit of people-watching. 

17. Balboa Park, California

Balboa Park is a sprawling urban park in San Diego, California. Many attractions are contained within the boundaries of this cultural destination. Besides green spaces, you’ll find several theatres, 17 museums, lush gardens, walking paths, the world-famous San Diego Zoo, and much more. 

The park has been attracting visitors since it opened in 1868. It has a Spanish Colonial Revival architectural style that blends right in with the city’s rich history. Best of all, the park does not charge an entrance fee. 

18. Walt Disney World, Florida

It’s no wonder Walt Disney World is one of the most visited places in the United States — it’s the happiest place on earth, after all. No matter your age, your inner child will relish the nostalgic atmosphere of this attraction. 

This theme park caters to every type of visitor, from kiddie rides and carnival games to thrilling roller coasters and entertaining shows. There are many dining options, from food vendors to high-end eateries. And last but not least, you can remember your trip by stopping into a souvenir shop for a Disney-themed memento. 

19. French Quarter, Louisiana

Visiting the French Quarter in New Orleans is quite the experience. This charming district showcases all of the city’s best features. If you’re into the macabre, the voodoo shops, ghost tours, and crumbling cemeteries will provide a one-of-a-kind experience. 

If you’re a foodie, there are endless places to enjoy authentic creole cuisine. You can also explore the city’s past at the many historical places in NOLA in the French Quarter — some date back as far as the 1700s.  

20. Bryce Canyon National Park, Utah

Bryce Canyon National Park is a nature reserve located in southern Utah. Despite its name, this attraction is not a canyon. It’s known for its many natural amphitheaters and hoodoos, which are spire-shaped rock formations.

The vast landscape is made up of red, orange, and white shades that contrast beautifully with the blue skies above. This scene is especially magical when the sun sets. Plenty of hiking trails allow you to admire the scenery from different angles. 

21. Zion National Park, Utah

Zion National Park is one of the most popular national parks in the US. It is located in southwest Utah and is renowned for its steep red cliffs, forested trails, and the rocky Virgin River. 

You’ll find lots of activities for adventurous travelers, like hiking, biking, backpacking, camping, and climbing. The best way to see the park is on two feet, but a scenic shuttle runs along the roughly six-mile (10 km) Zion Canyon Scenic drive.

22. San Antonio River Walk, Texas

The San Antonio River Walk in Texas is a pedestrian-lined street next to some of the city’s most popular spots. This includes restaurants, bars, shops, and tourist attractions, like the San Antonio Museum of Art, and a handful of Spanish colonial missions, including the Alamo. 

It’s 15 miles (22 km) long, and, as the name implies, most of the path travels along the water. If you don’t feel like walking the route, you can take a riverboat cruise and explore the waterways in a more relaxing setting. 

23. The Alamo, Texas

The Alamo is a Spanish mission and fortress in San Antonio, Texas. It was built in 1718 by Roman Catholic missionaries and marks the spot of a pivotal event in Texan and US history. 

This Texas landmark is where the 1836 Battle of the Alamo occurred, fought between the Republic of Texas and Mexico. The historic site serves as a shrine to Texas independence and tells the story of the battle and other key events in the state’s history.

24. Navy Pier, Illinois

Navy Pier is a 3,300-foot-long (1,005-metre) pier on the stunning shoreline of Lake Michigan in Chicago’s Streeterville neighborhood. This former Navy training center holds historical significance, although today, it attracts crowds for different reasons. 

It’s overflowing with entertaining activities, like carnival rides, regularly scheduled fireworks, restaurants, and shops. If you’re not afraid of heights, the iconic Ferris wheel will give you a great glimpse of the city’s nearby skyscrapers. 

25. Faneuil Hall Marketplace, Massachusetts

Faneuil Hall Marketplace in Boston is a popular marketplace and meeting hall that opened in 1742. It has ties to the founding of the United States; famous figures from America’s past, including Samuel Adams and Jamis Otis, gave speeches here regarding US independence. 

Today, it houses three popular markets: Quincy, North, and South. You’ll find a wide variety of shops, full-service restaurants, and casual food stalls. This is the place to go if you want to experience the local culture and food scene. 

26. Las Vegas Strip, Nevada

The Las Vegas Strip pulses with energy 24/7. It’s the ultimate playground for vacationing adults. With high-end hotels, world-class shows, a surplus of shops, and gambling options galore, you can enjoy a completely over-the-top getaway. 

Whether you want to dine out every evening, dance the night away, or relax by the pool and order cocktail service, you can enjoy this city at whatever pace. This is the type of place that people visit repeatedly because there’s always something new and exciting happening. There are plenty of things to do in Las Vegas that aren’t gambling.

27. Pike Place Market, Washington

Pike Place Market is one of the oldest continually running markets in the US. It’s been operating since 1907. It is located on Seattle’s stunning waterfront, showcasing everything the city is famous for, including views of Seattle’s stunning sunsets.

You’ll find roughly 200 different vendors selling everything from fresh fish and vegan treats to home decor and flower bouquets. Make sure to come hungry; there are food options to please all palettes. 

While you’re in Seattle make sure you check out the fantastic wineries in Washington State as well as some of Washington State’s hot springs.

Fun Fact: The original Starbucks coffee shop is just around the corner from Pike Place Market. 

28. Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee

Great Smoky Mountains National Park sits on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee. 

The vast terrain contains lush forests, blooming wildflowers, scenic streams, quiet rivers, and thundering waterfalls. All of this natural beauty can be admired from the many hiking routes that wind through the park. 

If you visit, make sure to head to Clingmans Dome. It’s the highest point in the national park as well as the whole state of Tennessee. An observation tower offers incredibly beautiful views of the mountains as far as the eye can see. 

29. Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado

Mesa Verde National Park is a sacred place in southwest Colorado’s rural landscape. The Ancestral Pueblo people sustained a thriving community in this area for hundreds of years. 

Today, it welcomes visitors to explore the many well-preserved Ancestral Puebloan cliff dwellings. You can take a guided tour or wander around Mesa Verde on your own by hiking one of the well-marked trails. 

30. Mount Rushmore, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore has got to be one of the most unique landmarks in the United States. Carved into the side of South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore, you’ll find the faces of four former US presidents: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and Theodore Roosevelt. 

Each of the sculpture’s faces is approximately 60 feet (18 metres) in height. Construction for this massive project lasted from 1927 to 1941. 

Fun Fact: The sculpting of Mount Rushmore was extremely dangerous. Roughly 90% of the mountain had to be carved using dynamite. Surprisingly, the project saw zero fatalities over its 14-year construction timeline. 

31. Mackinac Bridge, Michigan

The Mackinac Bridge is a suspension bridge that rests over the Straits of Mackinac in Michigan. It opened in 1957 and connects the state’s Upper and Lower peninsulas. Before the bridge’s construction, these areas could only be traveled between by ferry. 

This famous American bridge operates a toll bridge and is only accessible to vehicle traffic, except on Labor Day when the bridge opens up for the annual Mackinac Bridge Walk. 

32. Mall of America, Minnesota

The Mall of America is a huge shopping center in Bloomington, Minnesota. It’s the largest mall in the United States, and millions of visitors walk through its doors each year. There are approximately 520 shops and 50 restaurants — but that’s not all it has. 

The mall also houses an aquarium, an amusement park, a theatre, a minigolf course, an escape room, and much more. It’s safe to say that this attraction provides more than just a shopping experience. 

33. Acadia National Park, Maine

Acadia National Park sits along the Atlantic coast of Maine. It’s a highly scenic recreation area with a landscape of rocky beaches, granite peaks, and woodland. Hiking is an extremely popular way to immerse yourself in the beautiful terrain. There are trails for all skill levels.

16.  Hoover Dam | Nevada

What is it?  Perhaps the best example of America’s building prowess in the first half of the 20th century, this dam remains a bewildering feat of engineering and labor. Construction started in 1931 and took five years, 5,000 workers and 3.25 million cubic yards of concrete to complete.

Why go?  Today, you can tour the dam and its power plant to learn more about the facility’s history and unique features.

17.  The Gateway Arch | St. Louis, MO

What is it?  Not only is St. Louis’s premiere attraction the world’s largest arch, but the Gateway Arch  is also the tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere.

Why go?   Standing proud at 630ft tall, this metal beauty was built in the mid-20th century as a monument to America’s westward expansion and is meant to signify the connection of the East to the West, honoring the country’s first pioneers. To fully understand this architectural wonder, snag a ticket to the Gateway Arch Tram and ride to the top of the monument.

18.  Mammoth Cave Park | Kentucky

What is it?  With more than 400 miles explored, Mammoth Cave Park  is the world’s longest-known cave system (by far). It is in Kentucky, and it welcomes any visitor not afraid of the dark or the damp. During a guided tour by a park ranger, see the dramatic passages lined with geological formations that might inspire your inner explorer.

Why go?  The tours vary in length, but they always include historical details about how the cave system was formed and how people and other creatures interacted with it. What is it?  Clearly, one of the Midwest’s most popular destinations, Navy Pier is visited by roughly nine million people each year. From excellent shopping opportunities to eateries and, of course, Lake Michigan, the destination offers something for everyone.

Why go?  The little ones will be delighted by the Chicago Children’s Museum , while grown-ups should head to the award-winning Chicago Shakespeare Theater . 

21.  Alcatraz | San Francisco, CA

What is it?   Alcatraz is a formidable fortress in the middle of San Francisco Bay that was converted from a lighthouse station to a military prison in the 1870s. However, it found genuine acclaim after being upgraded to a maximum-security prison in 1934, home to the early 20th-century’s most notorious criminals.

Why go?  Today, the tiny island is only accessible to the public via a ferry from Pier 33 Alcatraz Landing. You should plan to spend about three hours soaking up the amazing history and during that time, a self-guided audio cellhouse tour narrated by former inmates and guards will fill you in on harrowing escape attempts, prison riots and the 19-month-long occupation of the site by Native Americans demanding reparation for broken treaties in 1969. 

22.  Venice Beach | Venice, CA

What is it?  Wedged in between Marina del Ray and Santa Monica, Venice Beach is one of the biggest draws for visitors to Los Angeles. 

Why go?  It's firmly established as the bohemian epicenter of Southern California and you won't find a higher concentration of recognizable landmarks from film and TV anywhere else in Los Angeles. At weekends, during the summer, it gets pretty packed, but that just adds to the slightly chaotic atmosphere. Street acts add a carnival feel to the proceedings, plus, of course, the beach is just a few feet away. Try Hinano Cafe  for a great burger in a back-to-basics, spit 'n sawdust setting and the newly refurbished Pier House for classic cocktails as the sun sets over the Pacific.

23.  Alamo Mission | San Antonio, TX

What is it?  Most Americans know the phrase 'Remember the Alamo' even if they’re not exactly sure what transpired at the 18th-century Spanish mission. Later secularized and used as a fortress, 1836,  the Alam o was the site of a bloody and decisive battle of the Texas Revolution between Texas’s early Anglo settlers and Mexico (the latter won).

Why go?  One of the most visited historic sites in the country today, the fort welcomes about three million visitors annually.

We took a look at 10 of the most popular U.S. destinations to determine which ones are must-see and which ones are tourist traps. Here’s our ranking of the top-visited tourist attractions in the United States and if they’re actually worth visiting.

10. Times Square — Manhattan, New York

Located in the center of New York City, the bustling hub known as Times Square attracts roughly 50 million visitors each year, making it the most visited attraction in the entire country. Despite this level of popularity, locals avoid Times Square like the plague. The busy streets are often far too chaotic to really enjoy and are filled with tourist traps such as costumed characters overcharging for photos. Times Square is also full of generic chain restaurants, and there are far better eateries throughout other NYC neighborhoods.

Despite the fact that Times Square ranks last on this list, it does have a few positives. The glowing advertisements adorning the many skyscrapers are a sight to behold, and there are a few iconic shops like the M&M’s store and Hershey’s Chocolate World. Times Square is also walking distance to the city’s most famous Broadway theaters, so it can be a convenient spot for a pre-show meal or post-show libation.

9. Navy Pier — Chicago, Illinois

Navy Pier is a historic Chicago-area institution that extends into the waters of Lake Michigan. The pier has a rich and fascinating history that long predates its time as an entertainment mecca. It was first created to house soldiers and sailors during World War I, and in 1995, the pier was finally converted into the spectacle we see today, which welcomes roughly nine million visitors annually.

Some local Chicagoans may refer to Navy Pier as a tourist trap, but it’s worth a visit if you’ve never been. The pier is highlighted by an enormous 196-foot-tall Ferris wheel that provides lovely views of the downtown skyline and as far out into Lake Michigan as the eye can see. Other worthwhile activities on the pier include the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and the Chicago Children’s Museum.

8. Union Station — Washington, D.C.

D.C.’s Union Station sees around 40 million commuters and tourists pass through on a yearly basis, making it more popular than other D.C. landmarks like the White House and Lincoln Memorial. This incredible Beaux Arts style train depot first opened in 1907, and sits mere blocks north of the U.S. Capitol. While there was a time when the station fell into disrepair, a sizable rehabilitation project occurred between 1981 and 1988 that returned Union Station to its glory.

The train terminal is rife with shopping and dining options, so you could spend a whole day exploring the entire building. But where Union Station really shines is in its stunning architecture. This landmark is composed almost entirely of a vibrant white granite, and takes inspiration from several ancient Roman buildings; the main facade was inspired by the Arch of Constantine, while the vaulted ceilings draw from the Baths of Diocletian.

7. Pike Place Market — Seattle, Washington

Seattle’s Pike Place Market was established on August 17, 1907, making it one of the oldest continuously operating farmers markets in the entire country. Over 10 million tourists come to shop the 500+ stalls operated by area farmers and local businesses. In fact, Three Girls Bakery — the first ever business in Seattle licensed to women — has been in operation here since 1912.

Pike Place Market may be most famous as the home of the very first Starbucks , which opened in 1971 and still operates today. There’s also a local tradition of throwing fresh fish in Pike Place Market, which is an absolute spectacle to behold. Throwing fish initially began as a prank, but attracted so many crowds that it became a new part of the market’s identity. Today, tourists gather en masse to watch fishmongers skillfully hurl whole fresh fish across the market floor.

6. Faneuil Hall Marketplace — Boston, Massachusetts

Nicknamed the “Cradle of Liberty,” Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace is a history lover’s dream. Faneuil Hall itself opened back in 1742, serving as an important meeting place during those pre-independence days and hosting famous speeches delivered by Founding Fathers such as Samuel Adams. In 1826, the building expanded to include Quincy Market, which has served up food and drink to locals for nearly two centuries.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace underwent renovations and reopened in 1976, though still maintains its historic brick exteriors and domed roofs. It’s absolutely worth checking out the Quincy Market Colonnade — which is considered the first food hall in the nation — for a warm bowl of clam chowder or other local treats. All told, Faneuil Hall welcomes over 18 million visitors annually, and remains one of the most important institutions from our nation’s early history.

5. Magic Kingdom — Orlando, Florida

Whether you’re a Disney lover or not, it’s hard to deny just how spectacular Orlando’s Magic Kingdom theme park truly is. Located in the heart of Walt Disney World, the Magic Kingdom welcomes upwards of 17 million visitors each year, slightly exceeding the annual numbers of Disneyland in California. Upon entering the park, you’re immediately taken aback by the towering Cinderella Castle, which ascends 189 feet into the air and hosts regular awe-inspiring fireworks shows.

You can still experience plenty of thrills and joy while visiting the park even if you don’t know each Disney movie by heart. There are plenty of iconic rides worth experiencing such as Space Mountain, where you wind along a roller coaster track in total darkness, and the charming It's a Small World. The park’s newest major attraction, the visually-stunning TRON Lightcycle Run, is also a worthwhile ride for thrillseekers.

4. Golden Gate Bridge — San Francisco, California

Both the Golden Gate Bridge and nearby Golden Gate Park are among the country’s most-visited attractions. The bridge welcomes more than 10 million visitors annually, while the park hosts a staggering 24 million tourists each year. The bridge is one of America’s most recognizable landmarks, boasting 746-foot-tall towers that are painted a vibrant orange color. Best of all, there are plenty of photo opportunities on both sides of the bay for tourists to capture their memorable visit with the bridge in the background.

Golden Gate Park offers a whole different experience. The third-most-visited park in the country, it is home to tremendously diverse plant life with over 7,000 species located throughout the park grounds. Other notable sites within the park include a beautiful Japanese Tea Garden and a historic Conservatory of Flowers dating back to 1879. You’d be hard pressed to find a more beautiful location anywhere on the West Coast.

3. Las Vegas Strip — Las Vegas, Nevada

There are few places more recognizable in the entire country than the Las Vegas Strip. This bustling thoroughfare is a gambling, entertainment, and culinary mecca, welcoming over 40 million visitors each year. The strip is known for its glowing lights and replicas of famous landmarks, such as the Paris Las Vegas hotel’s half-size replica of the Eiffel Tower, the Luxor's Sphinx replica, and the half-size Statue of Liberty found at the New York-New York hotel.

Speaking of hotels, the Las Vegas Strip contains more than half of the 20 largest hotels in the world, offering up over 150,000 rooms in total to tourists. What makes Vegas so great is the wide variety of activities you can experience. Try your luck at some blackjack or witness a Vegas Golden Knights hockey game. Or if you’re feeling more adventurous, ascend the 1,149-foot-tall Stratosphere Tower . This incredible observation tower offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape, and even features several thrill rides such as the X-Scream roller coaster, which extends 27 feet out over the edge of the tower.

2. Great Smoky Mountains National Park — North Carolina and Tennessee

Located on the border of North Carolina and Tennessee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the country’s most-visited national park, welcoming upwards of 13 million visitors each year. Best of all, the park doesn’t even charge an entrance fee , making it incredibly affordable for anyone to come and learn more about this country’s fascinating and beautiful natural history.

One of the most popular attractions in the entire park is Clingmans Dome , which is the tallest peak in the Great Smoky Mountains topping out at 6,643-feet-tall. The park is also known for its beautiful coloration, as it’s full of vibrant wildflowers throughout the warmer months before transforming into a leaf peeper’s paradise in the autumn. There’s also much human history to be explored on park grounds, as archeologists have even uncovered artifacts that date back 10,000 years such as stone tools and ancient pottery.

As Americans, we dream of summers on the French Riviera and spring in Japan, but travelers around the world aspire to visit the U.S. — so much so that the U.S. was named the top country for tourism in 2024 by the World Economic Forum .

Travelers come from all over the world to see the New York City skyline, peer into the Grand Canyon , and explore the Everglades, but there are certain sites that visitors have deemed a “must-see.” To determine which site is the top tourist attraction in the U.S ., the retreat booking site BookRetreats.com analyzed 77 of the most popular points of interest across the nation, evaluating each on factors like place popularity, overall experience (according to over 7,500 visitor reviews), and hotel costs.

At the top of the list was a site that’s both natural and urban: Central Park in New York City .

The 843-acre park received a score of 4.075 out of a possible 5 points in the rating, making it the top tourist attraction in the U.S. The New York City park stood out for its popularity, maintaining a 4.8 rating on Google and garnering over 270,000 reviews. In addition, 91 percent of recent visitors raved about its beauty and abundance of free activities. (We’re guessing it doesn’t hurt that the park has its own castle and zoo.)

In addition to housing the top tourist attraction in the U.S., six other New York City sites made it onto the list, making the city an easy choice for travelers who only have time to go to one place. Interestingly, iconic spots like the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty were surpassed by natural sites like The High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park.

Following Central Park in the ranking were two more urban parks: Washington, D.C.’s long, grassy National Mall came in at No. 2, while Balboa Park in San Diego was ranked No. 3. 

The trend toward nature-driven tourist attractions continues throughout the ranking, with natural sites making up 50 percent of the study’s best places to go.
