Neo-soul singer/songwriter Erykah Badu (born February 26th, 1971) has become one of the most praised artists in R&B and soul, drawing comparisons with Billie Holiday with her vocal talents.
Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, US, Badu studied at a school of arts where she cultivated her musical abilities, growing up with a love for 70s soul and 80s hip hop. Her first break came whilst she was working as a teacher and part-time singer, when she opened for D'Angelo in 1994. Her performance caught the attention of D'Angelo's manager, Kedar Massenburg, who was so impressed that he signed her to his label, Kedar Entertainment, before then arranging for Badu to record a cover of Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell's duet, "Precious Love."
Badu's debut album, "Baduizm," arrived in 1997, finding fans with her bass-heavy R&B and her emotive, delicate vocals. The album was produced by Massenburg and also featured members of the Roots on several tracks. Her first single, "On & On" topped the R&B charts, with the album also peaking at the top spot. The album also faired well in the mainstream pop charts, bolstered by high profile support slots with R&B stars as well as hip hop acts, including Wu Tang Clan.
She returned to the studio in 2000, recording her sophomore release, "Mama's Gun," which utilized the production talents of Badu herself, James Poyser, Bilal and Jay Dee, scoring a hit single with "Bag Lady." Badu followed "Mama's Gun" a year later with 2003's EP, "Worldwide Underground." Badu pushed her sound towards a heavier, more abstract neo-soul with 2008's "New Amerykah, Pt.!: 4th World War," which featured members of Sa-Ra and Georgia Anne Mulldrow. The album was a huge success, peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, with this stylistic move continuing with 2010's "New Amerykah, Pt. 2: Return of the Ankh," although being a more light-hearted affair. Following this release, Badu has featured on a number of recordings with various artists, including Bonobo, Tyler the Creator, and Flying Lotus.
Live reviews
On the last day of the year, I’ve generally stayed at home with candles lit and music on, while writing and reflecting on the upcoming year. My plans would have probably been the same for 2012, but one person changed all that. Erykah Badu. Upon discovering she was spending her New Year’s Eve in Oakland at the Fox Theatre, I did what any fanatic fan would do – I immediately sent word out that I was going and asked if anyone wanted to join. I feel as though she and I share a special bond. We do have a few things in common – we are both water signs (she’s a Pisces, I'm a Cancer); she also attended my alma mater, Grambling State University. I would love to say that I knew her while I was there. It would be nice if I had bumped into her a time or two on campus and knew she was going to be somebody (at Grambling, the motto is “The place where everybody is somebody,” so I guess all students are somebody). But, alas, we were not on campus together; I believe she left the year before I entered the University. But I do actually know someone who really knows her, so there’s something else we have in common. Enough of the digression. One thing I clearly remember from my Grambling days is listening to Baduizm for the first time in 1997. I was in my last semester, set to graduate and officially become a “grown” woman. Gone would be the safety net of college life; now I had student loans to repay, a car note to worry about, and a job to secure. So in my life walks this woman singing about her cipher moving like a rolling stone, picking her friends like she picks her fruit, and asking who gave anyone permission to rearrange her. And I recall thinking, she's absolutely right on point! Erykah’s lyrics and music were refreshingly different than most R&B of the 90s. While we had Mary J. Blige singing about Real Love over a hip-hop beat, Erykah sang about Next Lifetime and No Love. She was an inspirational change of pace, and I clung on to her every word. I am a lover of everything Badu. When Mama’s Gun was released in 2000, I just knew she wrote many of those songs about my life. From Didn’t Cha Know, to . . . & On to Kiss Me On My Neck, Erykah’s growth was apparent. So, back to her show on Dec. 31, 2012. It’s been 15 years since Baduzim’s debut and Erykah has subsequently released five more albums. Each has showcased an ever-changing Badu, but one thing has remained consistent – Erykah’s live performances. They are NEVER a disappointment. Strolling on stage while her band played a lazy and drawn out version of 20 Feet Tall (it came across as if they were still in sound check), she paused at the microphone, taking in all the audience love, before proclaiming, “My love, what did I do to make you fall so far from me?” At the end of the song (and come to think of it, she did this on every song), Erykah struck a warrior/goddess pose. The next three songs (The Healer/Hip Hop, Me and My People) are all from New Amerykah: Part One (4th World Order) – the one album whose meaning I’m still working on grasping. This provided me, however, the perfect opportunity to stop and do some video recording. Playing On & On and . . . & On back to back, Love of My Life (An Ode to Hip Hop) followed with a surprise appearance by Oakland’s own Raphael Saadiq who, according to Erykah, provided the base line for the song. (Side note, I normally am up dancing to this song, but I sacrificed this time so I could record this performance for my readers. I’m glad I did.) As the clock neared midnight, the band began the first notes of Danger. About half way through the song, a count-down appeared on the screen behind the stage and we all stopped, screamed happy New Year, and went back to partying. During Back in the Day (Puff), Erykah exclaimed, “Now is the opportunity for you to smoke,” as if that hadn’t been already occurring. At some point, she took her shoes off and ended the night with Didn’t Cha Know, the first verse from Out My Mind, Just in Time (the one song I just had to hear) and Bag Lady, which I think was an appropriate song to finish with because in the new year, I definitely will be working on letting the bags go!

Perhaps it was my fault for having high expectations... To kick off a month of festivities celebrating my wife's birth, I surprised her with tickets to Erykah Badu. She has seen her perform in the past in Memphis, but this was my first time and I had heard wonderful reviews... that she puts on an amazing show; commands the audience in a way only Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin did. Tonight was not the case. The opening act, Ro James, was meh. I congratulate him for pursuing his dream (if only everyone did that), but his show sucked for the most important reason. The sound was horrible. I have always feared this was the state of most hip hop concerts... That there is no way to get the live sound to imitate CD quality... Or the people working the sound are unknowledgeable, or the equipment is subpar... For whatever reason, the sound quality was horrible. On a positive note, he performed a song about asking consent when hooking up with a woman and I think that is a strong message that more men need to share with other men. So, overall, he gets a favorable review.
Erykah Badu was pretty amazing, but overall, the show was meh. I could have saved $165 (total cost for 2, $62 tickets and service fees). The Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi is a horrible venue. The drink and food lines were incredibly long, as if they were understaffed, though the restrooms were clean and never crowded.
Erykah's voice was good and sounded like she is taking care of herself, but she did get tired. Did a few old songs as well as some new ones. She came on a little late, which allowed us to stand in the longer than usual line for snack... only to begin right when we were close to the front. Her back up band was really good. They played one set. She did not really engage with us, the audience. A few songs after mentioning that she was tired, she finished and left the state.
Oh yeah, and did I mention that she was performing in Mississippi, but kept calling it Memphis. While Southaven is in the Memphis metropolitan statistical area, it is still Mississippi and so not Memphis!
In conclusion, I am glad I saw her perform. I am happier that I was able to spend a wonderful evening with my wife. Will I pay to see her perform again? Most likely not, though I love her music.
So she pulled a Lauren Hill Last night at the Brooklyn Bowl. My Girlfriend was really looking forward to see he for Post valentines day. We paid 17 Dollars for parking $ 100 dollars for drinks ..we stood in a huge line to get in and get our tickets on the ticket the show time is 8PM .. ( Figured she would be a litle bit after that no big deal ) standing room only were are all packed in like sardines.. no opening band.. 1 hour goes by , no Erykah 2 hours go by no Erykah, 2 hours and 45 go by no Erykah ...3 hours no body even came out to greet all these people who have paid good money and have been standing waiting for over 3 HOURS past show time.there were drinks being poured down from the upper balcony and started getting really ghetto in there.. People started booing and a bunch of people left to get refunds.. Brookyln Bowl was very helpful with the refunds but someone there should have been wise enough to apologize for the delay..fter we left she finally took the stage after 11: 30 PM played for about an hour.. By far the worst concert experience ever.. I really hope Brooklyn Bowl holds her responsible and takes out the refunded ticket cost out of her pay..I will never buy another ticket to see Miss Ba.. I really was looking forward to going to the brooklyn bowl tainted my first experience but I will go back because they did offer a refund ..I feel very sorry for that poor lady who was refunding all those tickets.
One of the most acclaimed R & B singers Erykah Badu has been touring extensively since her beginnings in the mid-90's. Her soulful sound has captivated fans around the world and her shows are almost always guaranteed to sell out so the opportunity to see her perform live feels even more special.
Often criticised for arriving onstage late, Erykah walks on to the atmospheric setting and the audience fall deadly silent as herself and each of her band are illuminated by singular spotlights. Standing for a moment to indulge in the sight before her, Badu smiles broadly before taking to a synth pad and beginning the fragmented '20 Feet Tall'. Her biggest international hit 'On & On' is dropped midset and given a jazz style makeover which sounds great with the freestyle instrumentals.
Erykah uses her own voice as an instrument as she performs vocal acrobatics cheered on by the crowd. Her own backing band keep the rhythm and pace whilst Badu freestyles making every concert feel original. A tender rendition of 'Next Life' and the ever popular 'Bag Lady' leave the audience satisfied.
I absolutely LOVEEEEEE Erykah Badu, but her timing is awful, the show began at 8 and she showed up at about 10, maybe 10:30 because there was a performing act that came on before and I lost track of time but that's just not okay to paying people expecting a show to be at least two hours and only amounted up to about one. However, her energy and presence is awesome, once she showed up I couldn't even be mad anymore I was just so happy to be experiencing her live and in color, she has such a colorful personality and truly knows how to engage her audience and that's great. I do realize she was there to promote her mixtape but I also think it was a bit too premature since it dropped so recently and no one really knew all the material or could sing along which I felt she could sense and went back to her old hits and then the crowd was really into it, I just wish I could get more out of the concert. There were definitely a few more songs I would have LOVED to hear, other than that she's an awesome performer.
Erykah Badu is a high energy performer. Her band was truly talented and her background singers took this performance to the next level! They all rocked it! Only good things to say about this woman's showmanship and professionalism. Show started on time and the vibes were amazing. The only downside of this excursion was the venue. I flew 500 miles to see this show and because of the security at the venue we missed the first 3 songs in the set and had to stand in the pouring rain for 2 hours before we could get inside. The Observatory North Park really needs to rethink their security procedures. It's not a well planned system at all. I considered leaving and asked about a refund, but was told this wasn't possible. All in all I'm glad I stayed for the show because it really lifted my spirits after the security fiasco, but I'll never see another show at this venue. Not for all of the money in the world.
DISAPPOINTING!!!
I live in Austin, TX, I took the day off, drove up 35, checked into my hotel, had a SUPERB dinner at Fleming’s in Plano, TX, drove down to The Bomb Factory, paid $20 to park in a lot at Malcolm X & Taylor, walked to the venue, got through security, got my ticket scanned at 7:50 PM CST.
Festival seating, no seats!!
Act # 1 (Techno DJ), Act # 2 (DC drummer), Dead Prez (3 songs)
I purchased a $30 T-shirt for my daughter
We tried to hold up until Ms. Badu made her stage appearance.
We left the venue at 11:10 PM CST
I Love Ms. Badu, but last night was VERY UNPROFESSIONAL!!
Have always and will always love Erykah’s contribution to music BUT... she takes her fans in Dallas for granted. Tickets stated doors open at 7pm show starts at 8pm. Opening act didn’t start until 9. She came out during his set to say hello, so she clearly was at the venue but she made her fans wait until after 12am to hear her perform. I don’t know of anyone worth waiting that long. There were people who left without seeing her. Disappointed Ms. Badu You may be the envy of the women and rule the men but I’ll just listen to the music from the comfort of my home in the future.
This was one of the best experiences I've had in my entire life! It was amazing. I'm a huge fan and she DID NOT disappoint.. She covered various albums and even went as far to join other melodies from other songs into the hooks of her songs. Her voice was so off the charts that I had to hold my chest cause I didn't think my heart could stay intact during her high notes. Haha, I will DEFINITELY be going to her concerts whenever she comes back to the area. Thanks SongKick for making your platform available to me.
The show was just ok for me. I couldn't get over the fact that she did not come on until 9:30 when the show was supposed to start at 8. This was my first time and last time attending a concert of hers. My time is valuable just like the artist and if any artist cannot respect their fans I would suggest the fans stop supporting their artist. My fiancee seen get years ago at the beginning of her career and she was on time. Money can really change a person. Sad.

The lineup for the 2022 Summer Spirit Festival has been revealed and the annual event is set to bring Neo-Soul and Hip-Hop greats to the D.M.V. area. Erykah Badu is listed as the headliner for the 15-year-anniversary. She is joined on the lineup by Anthony Hamilton , Marsha Ambrosius , Method Man , Redman , Junkyard Band , and J. Brown .
As with many public events, the festival had been forced into a hiatus by the coronavirus pandemic for two years. According to Soul Bounce , the Mama’s Gun singer also headlined the last Summer Spirit Festival in 2018. Method Man and Redman also performed during the same showing.

“Save the date, free your mind & find your way,” wrote organizers on Instagram announcing Badu’s return. “Our 15th anniversary Summer Spirit get down featuring our Queen.”
Badu recently responded to backlash and critiques from fans after the headliner’s performance at California’s Smokin Grooves festival was cut short in March.
“2022 [eyes emoji] Headliner Life. @questlove always told me the headliner spot at a huge 1 day concert festival is the worst slot. Because when curfew comes & you aren’t even 1/2 way thru the set … they will cut the mike . When things run behind that night , The headliner has to take the weight . But still .. I give my all . Love you guys . Grateful ,” expressed the “On & On” singer on Instagram.
Completing the 2022 Summer Spirit lineup are local DJ and radio personality DJ Dirty Rico and Jas Funk from the legendary Go-Go band Rare Essence. The first will provide background music to entertain audiences in-between sets while the latter is set to emcee the music-fueled event, hashtagged by organizers as #NotJustAnotherConcert.
The 2022 Summer Spirit Festival is set for Aug. 7, 2022, at the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Columbia, Md. Tickets go on sale on Friday, April 8th, at 10 a.m. ET on Ticketmaster . View the full lineup below.

Live From BADUBATRON: Erykah Badu Returns To Sold-Out Greek Theatre In Berkeley With Noname [Photos/Video]
Erykah Badu may not have released an official studio album in a dozen years, but she remains an unstoppable creative spirit, not to mention entrepreneur.
During the pandemic years she’s kept pretty busy, hosting a station on Sonos Radio , launching her own livestreaming platform, and executive-producing a forthcoming documentary about her dear friend, collaborator, and high-school classmate—the late jazz trumpet phenomenon Roy Hargrove —not to mention unveiling a popular strand of incense inspired by her, umm… ill na na .
Yet Badu is an artist first and foremost, a musician and songstress with a catalog of beloved compositions that have made an indelible impact on the lives of people around the world for three decades. Erykah remains a brilliant and idiosyncratic live performer who meticulously concocts her own patented hybrid style of R&B and hip-hop, equal parts Zen mysticism and sound of the streets.
This writer was lucky to take in a good chunk of her performance last month at the Congo Square Stage at New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival , a headlining slot on the second Saturday of the festival. It was excruciatingly hot and humid that afternoon, and though her performance was typically tremendous, the experience somewhat suffered from the suffocating sun. I was certainly looking forward to a proper spellbinding seance in the balmy Bay Area, within the glorious confines of UC Berkeley’s William Hearst Greek Theatre .

On an unusually warm late spring Friday evening, Erykah Badu returned to a sold-out Greek for the eighth concert on her current Live From the Badubatron tour. The ever-whimsical sorceress unveiled a streamlined, reimagined version of her greatest hits set that leaned toward popular numbers from her famed 1997 debut LP Baduizm .
Bay Area fans were treated to a short, potent opening set from Noname , who was performing for the first time in a couple of years, a fact she acknowledged both on Instagram , and from the stage. Suffice to say after such a long public absence , fans were extremely stoked to see Noname live and direct in her artistic element.
After a few numbers delivered solo, the beloved Chicago-based singer, emcee, activist, and poet invited fellow Windy City native Saba and St.Louis’s Smino to the stage to perform as the trio Ghetto Sage . The crew broke out their new joint “Häagen Dazs”, plus a medley of previous cuts that succeeded in getting the crowd hyped, and reminded them why Noname was so buzzed about before her chosen extended hiatus.

Following Noname’s opening set, Badu’s band emerged and took their places on the stage, rocking white tees worn beneath bright lemon-yellow coveralls that looked striking in the stage lights. They began with some afrobeat grooves, then some Miami bass before segueing first into a jam based on Badu’s “American Promise”, then into a hip-hop flavored take on James Brown ’s iconic “Sex Machine”. Despite imploring the packed theater to “get on up”, complete with demonstrative gesturing from the backing vocalists, the majority of the audience stayed seated.
So many, in fact, that the band wound it back down to a silence before an awkward fifteen minutes of nervous anticipation that may have cost us a few songs.
After the crowd thought it cool to turn on their cell phone lamps in unison and chant, instead of—I dunno—taking to their feet like we were asked, the band again started up “Sex Machine” at around 9:45 p.m. More get on ups, to more mixed results.
An enormous image of an Egyptian scarab with the initials “EB” was projected above the musicians. Eventually Badu strutted onstage at her own pace, leisurely smudging the space with sage whilst looking positively ravishing in a glistening gold coat with long fringes, a towering black hat atop her long tresses, and some wild boots to boot.

As has been her custom of late, Badu warmed things up with “Hello”, from her 2016 mixtape release U Caint Use My Phone , itself a psychedelic reading of Todd Rundgren ’s “Hello It’s Me.” She sipped a large cup of tea as she positioned herself between drum machines and a microphone at the front of the stage, holding the entire Greek in the palm of her high priestess hand from the moment she finally graced us.
After “Out My Mind, Just in Time”, Erykah took the opportunity to stress the following rule of Badubatron: “Mind Ya Bizness” before steering her ensemble into Faith, Hope & Charity ’s “To Each His Own. The group deftly segued into the celestial combo of “On & On” from her debut, naturally chased by “ ..& On” from her sophomore opus Mama’s Gun.
The latter took us all the way to church and nearly caught the holy ghost, with a stop at the park for a cardboard breakdance sesh and a few bars from Freddie Hubbard ’s “Red Clay” for good measure. After that funky outro, a spirited run through “Love Of My Life (An Ode to Hip-Hop)”, found on 2003’s Worldwide Underground , got some asses finally shakin’, and some smiles beaming to one of Erykah’s most heartwarming love songs.

A super sexy, synthed-out dip into “Phone Down” was dropped in somewhat of a steamy, chopped-n’-screwed style. With another neat segue, Badu and company unspooled the evening’s centerpiece, a scintillating sojourn through “Otherside of the Game”. Still drenched in relevant realism, “Otherside of the Game” tells the familiar tale of a fracturing love affair between a frustrated woman and a drug dealer, she who loves without condition, he who takes care at a karmic cost. This gripping, personal purge is also found on her monumental first record, and was delivered both faithfully to the original, and spiced with an updated arrangement fluent in Dilla Time.
Badu reshuffled her band members not long ago, now wielding a 10-piece ensemble complete with deejay and four secondary vocalists. Erykah tossed the Musical Director keys to drummer/percussionist Frank Moka , the lone instrumental holdover from her previous crew. Longtime backing vocalists like Durand Bernarr remain on the squad, so the sounds of the Badubatron band were a sweet mix of the familiar and the fresh, making more well-worn numbers come alive once again.
In between songs, the singer wasted far less time than normal; she seemed intent to keep things moving in a steady flow, instead of the various starts and stops of her longer, deeper, and more ambitious sets. Though occasionally, Erykah simply couldn’t help herself, and she had to bug out on the drum pads every now and again—probably just because she could, though frankly she’s gotten pretty damn good.

Badu did babble a bit about some of the same things she always does, specifically wondering aloud what decade her fans were born in, their connection to the Baduizm album, and what they’ve gleaned from their relationship to those songs. Badu has long been a proponent of maintaining the oral tradition. Somehow she also managed to do an about face from the real talk to riff on the theme of a “Cocksuckers Ball”, set to a tune that mimicked early ’60s soul styles à la The Clovers .
“Window Seat”, the lead single from New Amerykah Part Two , was revealed with a rather sublime arrangement that kept the same midtempo groove that had been established for most of the night intact. With more kaleidoscopic projection-mapped psychedelic art illuminated above the band, Erykah pranced and crooned into the crescent moon. Though as the 11:00 p.m. hard curfew rapidly approached, Badu did appear to race through the final few at a swifter-than-usual pace.
Fat Belly Bella sent the faithful home with a four-pack of Baduizm slow jams. She broke out a couple of deeper cuts from the debut including the dusty, soothing, scat-filled “No Love”, then transformed from mystic to chanteuse and slipped in a mickey with the certified singalong “Certainly”. Badu saved a pair of her most popular joints to close things out—the penultimate “Next Lifetime” has remarkable staying power, stunning with yet another sultry arrangement of the classic.
View this post on Instagram A post shared by ~B.Getz~ (@upful_life)
After a few words that hinted towards goodbye, Badu gave the people what many of them had come for, a crowd-assisted duet of her first smash single, “Tyrone”. While fans mimed telephone calls and wagged index fingers harder than Dikembe Mutumbo , the empress strutted around the stage barefoot and blowing kisses to the adoring throngs belting out her biggest song. A smiling Erykah graciously bowed, offering a brief, priestly benediction on togetherness before disappearing backstage and into the moonlit night.
While this Badu set was a bit shorter in length than what hardcore fans have grown accustomed to, it was a lean, streamlined, tightly performed greatest hits set, with a couple of potent deep cuts for the heads. Several of her tunes were remixed or rearranged in some fashion, not to mention numerous slick segues, funky breakdowns, and cascading multi-layered vocal harmonies.
Sure, there were quite a few jams on the slower side, too. I tend to think that the lackadaisical crowd vibe and relative lack of dancing early in the game may have affected how the singer chose to steer the show. I too would have greatly appreciated a run through “Back in the Day”, “Honey”, or “Bag Lady”, each in the rotation on the Live From the Badubatron tour. And it’s a bit of a headscratcher that ethereal mainstay “The Healer” appears to have been scratched from current setlists altogether. Then again, Erykah is still working in a relatively new backing band, and the tracks that they are performing sound thrilling and incandescent, occasionally even reborn.
But alas, given all that we have collectively lived through of late, I prefer to place my focus on gratitude, for the gift of live music and the blessing of an Erykah Badu concert. Hers is the name on the marquee, and homegirl should do as she damn well pleases. Instead of lamenting too hard on what once was or maybe could’ve been, I’ll give thanks for the songs she chose to sing for us, and gladly show up next time Badubatron slides through the Bay.

Music at the Intersection 2022 Lineup Revealed: Erykah Badu and Gary Clark Jr. to Perform
The st. louis festival will return to the grand center arts district sept. 10 through 11..
Music at the Intersection returns to the Grand Center Arts District in St. Louis, Missouri. The two-day festival, set for Sept. 10-11, has announced its lineup.
Erykah Badu , slated to perform at this year’s 2022 Smokin’ Grooves Festival , will kick off this outdoor festival on Saturday.
She’ll take a trip down memory lane, performing classics and other favorites that date back to her groundbreaking debut album, Baduizm , which celebrated its 25th-anniversary last month.
Grammy-winning bluesman Gary Clark Jr . will headline on Sunday, running through his discography of stadium-sized material, such as 2019’s acclaimed This Land .
Artists like Robert Glasper , Rose Royce, BJ The Chicago Kid , Hiatus Kaiyote, Buddy Guy, Kamasi Washington, and many others will play across four stages during the weekend.
Tina Turner, Albert King, and Henry Townsend, all St. Louis trailblazers, will be honored at the Music at the Intersection. A special celebration in memory of jazz drummer Montez Coleman will also occur.

Speaking on Music at the Intersection, Chris Hansen, executive director of Kranzberg Arts Foundation, said, “Every year our aim is to make this festival more accessible, diverse and multi-dimensional. In addition to the blues, jazz and heritage genre, which was the core of our lineup last year, we have national to local acts across everything from hip hop and R&B to indie rock, soul and funk. Between acts, attendees can wander the festival’s new outdoor footprint and enjoy local food offerings, unique amusements, live art activations and shopping with local vendors.”
He added, “An attendee may buy a ticket with a favorite like Erykah Badu, Buddy Guy or The Urge, in mind, but that ticket gets them access to an incredible, dynamic urban music experience – and we hope they explore it all.”
Tickets are on sale now. Get more information about the festival on its official website .

The five-time GRAMMY-winning juggernaut Snarky Puppy returns to the intimate environs of Miner Auditorium for a highly anticipated run of performances.
“An exultant throwdown of smart danceability” ( Village Voice ), Snarky Puppy isn’t exactly a jazz band. It’s not a fusion band or a jam band. It’s probably best to take Nate Chinen of The New York Times ’ advice, as stated in an online discussion about the group, to “take them for what they are, rather than judge them for what they’re not.”
The global collective which features a revolving cast of up to a dozen musicians makes what it likes to call “music for your brain and booty.” Led by bassist and composer Michael League , the band features a rotating lineup of world class instrumentalists whose résumés boast work with stars like Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Roy Hargrove, Snoop Dogg and John Mayer.
Their latest GroundUP Music album, 2022’s Empire Central , received a well-earned GRAMMY win for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 66th awards ceremony — their fifth win in as many nominations — and was inspired by the band’s formative home of Dallas, blending their whirlwind jazz-ified funk with elements of Southern rock, electric blues, classic soul, slinky R&B, and modern gospel.
After their triumphant engagement at Oakland’s Paramount Theatre, the five-time GRAMMY-winning juggernaut Snarky Puppy returns to the intimate environs of Miner Auditorium for a highly anticipated run of performances.
Snarky Puppy has gone from an underground secret to one of the most internationally respected names in instrumental music.

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Erykah Badu cancels headline festival performance just hours before she’s due on stage
Share this with
Erykah Badu cancelled her headline performance at this year’s Cross The Tracks on the day she was set to hit the stage.
The soul icon, 53, was among the huge acts set to perform at the London festival, but organisers took to Instagram to announce her headline set would no longer take place just hours before fans were meant to arrive.
Posting a picture of the stage, they said they were ‘utterly devastated’ that the Didn’t Cha Know hitmaker would not be able to perform due to illness, despite sound-checking this morning.
‘We are utterly devastated to inform you that Erykah Badu will no longer be playing Cross The Tracks 2024,’ the statement began.
‘We have spent the last 18 months working to secure this booking for her fans, her touring party has already arrived in London and has been sound-checking all morning but unfortunately due to illness, Erykah will be unable to make it.
‘We know what this means to you all, because it means the very same to us and this is a particularly hard message to be sharing. We’re so grateful in advance for your understanding about these matters, which are completely out of our control and we hope that you still enjoy the rest of this fantastic lineup, as we’ve been working tirelessly to curate the very best day for you all.’
They went on to urge attendees to check out the ’70 incredible acts’ that are also set to perform, with the lineup including Eve, Madlib, BADBADNOTGOOD, and En Vogue.
They continued: ‘This day isn’t just about one act, it’s about 70 incredible acts, shaping and defining the genres we love globally. Please stay tuned to the set times on Woov, as some things will be moving about; En Vogue will be closing out the main stage in all their glory and Freddie Gibbs & Madlib will now appear live on main stage in addition to Madlib’s previously scheduled DJ set on stage 2.
‘From a team of avid music lovers, #xthetracks24 will still be a true display of the brilliance and talent within jazz, funk and soul.’
Fans were quick to share their well wishes for Badu while expressing their disappointment they would not see her perform.
‘This is heartbreaking. I hope she feels better soon. Before people start asking for refunds. Please remember how hard it is for festivals to continue to run in this climate. There are still so many other great artists to see. Let’s continue to show support,’ ms_seraphine wrote.
Xmissvaleria said: ‘Refund better be an option. Many people are there for Erykah only,’ with Caity_jamie agreeing: ‘yeah refund i don’t understand this is totally unreasonable 6 hours before.’
Offkeybeatz reasoned: ‘Freddie Gibbs and Madlib are an awesome replacement to pull off last min and even if you’re not into that then here’s a whole load of other great artists to check out 🔥🔥🔥 you people asking for refunds really don’t realise how tough it is for independent festivals to survive these days, nevermind the fact that the organisers have been left holding the bag after paying for an artist to perform who drops out on the day.’
Eniz_menendez also said: ‘Sad but still gonna be a vibe – line up is amazing, let’s go Freddie Gibbs and Madlib! 🔥🔥🔥.’
The news comes after the singer took a swipe at Beyonce earlier this year in the run-up to the release of her hit album Cowboy Carter , accusing her of copying her signature style – and not for the first time .
When the TEXAS HOLD ‘EM singer, 42, unveiled the limited-edition vinyl cover on Instagram, Badu shared the image to her Stories with the caption ‘Hmmm.’
Following this, she took to Twitter in a bid to publicly reach out to Beyonce’s husband Jay Z, begging him to speak up.
‘To Jay Z . Say somethin Jay . You gone let this woman and these bees do this to me?? [sic],’ Erykah tweeted to her 2.7m followers.

In RM ‘s latest introspective turn, the BTS leader unveils his new solo endeavor Right Place, Wrong Person , an album that shifts the focus from genre experimentation to a raw exploration of his identity and emotions. RM’s previous solo project Indigo, which was released in 2022 and peaked at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 , marked an initial venture beyond the confines of his group to find his musical voice through a variety of collaborations and exploration into genres with musical greats that he admired like Erykah Badu, Youjueen, Anderson .Paak, Parkjiyoon, Tablo, Mahalia and more.
But as RM confided to his bandmate Jimin in an episode of their MMM (Mini & Moni Music) YouTube series , Indigo left him unfulfilled despite its critical acclaim and commercial success. Instead, RM spent more than a year feeling adrift and would even postpone his mandatory military enlistment to delve deeper into the music, feelings and sentiment that became Right Place, Wrong Person .
Just like how his music video for lead single “LOST!” opens with a nametag declaring “INSIDE NAMJOON’S BRAIN” (referring to RM’s birth name, Kim Namjoon), RPRW encapsulates the global superstar’s larger life questions. The album is not for the mass appeal of Hot 100 hits but to serve as an intimate outlet for RM to unburden himself after a period of hardship and self-reflection. Without the immense pressure of leading the world’s biggest pop group, RM shares his innermost thoughts — anger, hope, confusion, excitement, love, loneliness, mania.
While the album will certainly make a splash when it debuts on the Billboard 200 next week, it ultimately stands as a testament to RM’s evolution as an artist who can delve deeper — deeper than even he may have realized — to share a journey with which the world can empathize, gain comfort and help find answers to life’s difficult questions.
"? (Interlude)" With DOMi & JB BECK
Just like RM himself, French-American duo DOMi & DJ BECK is challenging to define. Their instrumental-focused work garners Grammy nominations and collaborations with the likes of Herbie Hancock and Busta Rhymes. Bringing their talents together on the “? (Interlude)” is a far-too-short intermission with great promise via synthesizer, drum, and flute combinations.
With the song’s title meant to represent RM being brutally honest and pulling out his deepest stories, “Groin” lets RM step slightly back into his original “Rap Monster” moniker and away from BTS’ English-speaking representative attending meetings at the United Nations. While some parts of the song get repetitive and feel like they lessen his messages, there is a heavy dose of clever wordplay; it’s refreshing to hear a scrappier RM again, and it shows that no matter how mature one may get, parts of our younger selves remain.
"ㅠㅠ (Credit Roll)"
In the shortest interlude on the record, RM simply asks the listener, “When the credits roll, do you hang tight?” before adding, “I’m so grateful for everyone’s time/ Hope you all had such a wonderful night.” There are many ways to take the phrase. Are you a moviegoer rushing to return to your life after being transported for a few hours? Or are you someone who lets experiences wash over you after they finish? Or do you take time to recognize all the people who helped create the movie you’ve experienced?
The allegory can even extend its meaning for TV shows or concerts (when many K-pop concerts roll a credits video at a show’s end, including the entire tour and management staff). It’s a quick and quirky cut but can elicit intense conversation and introspection.
"Right People, Wrong Place"
The opening track flips the album’s title and establishes the thematic tone of exploring misalignments through decidedly alternative production. With its mishmash of echoes, yelps, and vocal loops over the ever-changing synth work, “Right People, Wrong Place” sets the fluid and continuous narrative of the LP that’s more reminiscent of RM’s gorgeously lo-fi mixtape mono., released in 2018, than anything from his past solo or BTS work.
"Around the world in a day" feat. Moses Sumney
One of the longest tracks on the LP, “Around the world in a day,” begins with RM and indie soul singer Moses Sumney playing around, trading off lines and distorting their vocals before cutting to a rock star-rap performance at the halfway mark. The final 30 seconds of the track close with layered, acapella harmonies with a title like “Around the world in a day,” also representing the wide range of alternative genres tackled across the stunningly cool standout.
The centerpiece of Right Place Wrong Person , “LOST!” speaks to the BTS leader losing his way and needing to find himself solely on his own. Despite the serious subject matter, the lightness of the track’s lyrics and composition suggests that Namjoon has made peace in his journey. When he spits lines like, “I’m goddamn lost/ I never been to club before, I hit the club,” they can both feel relatable to anyone venturing into a new experience but also quite disjointed considering his rare experiences growing into adulthood as a K-pop idol.
RM spoke about how the past months making RPWP were dynamic in terms of highs and lows and there’s a sense of near mania in “LOST!” in the second verse when he shares, “Every morning, every night, I always feelin’ lifeless/ And in the morning, I feel love, I hug it in excitement.” The multitudes and range RM shares in the album’s title track is one of the best representations of the dualities and juxtapositions found throughout Right Place Wrong Person with the playful and at-ease atmosphere making it perfect single material to reach wider audiences.
Despite rising to fame as a rapper in BTS, RM knows how to craft soft, delicate pop soundscapes. A big fan of shoegaze, “Heaven” is the airy standout on RPWP that’s like a sonic equivalent of resting one’s head on a cloud but feeling the thunder rumbling just below the surface. The all-English track sees the star acknowledging someone toxic in his life (“If that’s your delight/ Come ruin my vibe…/ You don’t need to hide it/ I know what you are”) who no cannot affect his unshakeable solace (“I’m feelin’ so good here with me/ Feelin’ so full here with me/ Everything’s untakeable/ My peace is unbreakable). It’s a rare moment of musical tranquility in Namjoon’s journey and truly begins the stunning second half of Right Place, Wrong Person .
"Come back to me"
“Come back to me” introduced Right Place, Wrong Person for RM to return to us in a more somber and reflective mood. With acoustic, folky production that wouldn’t sound out of place across alternative, pop, or adult-contemporary radio, the nearly six-and-a-half minute tune lets RM deliver a more laid-back, crooner type of performance. As the layers of his voice get more complex and free-flowing — with background vocals by Kuo Kuo of Taiwian’s Sunset Rollercoaster and the song’s producer OHHYUK from acclaimed Korean indie band Hyukoh — the instrumentation also becomes increasingly nuanced with additional percussion, guitars and bass elements added into a mix that grows fiercer and more emotional, but never overwhelming or messy.
"Domodachi" feat. Little Simz
A track that exemplifies the blending of cultures, languages, sounds and emotions, “Domodachi” boasts layers that speak to the introspective and multifaceted approach RM took to RPWP.
“Domadachi” is a combination of the Japanese words domo and tomodachi , which mean “thank you” and “friends,” respectively. The compound “Domadachi” roughly translates to “thanks, friends,” but the biting lyrics show the phrase’s sarcastic essence. RM’s explicit Korean and English verses, the primarily Japanese chorus, and as well as the rap from British rapper Little Simz prove the range of linguistic interplay to explore belonging by addressing friends, fans and critics who overemphasize the superficial. Little Simz delivers her verse to declare that “Simz and RM, man/ It don’t get bigger” but closes her final line with the Korean phrase “내 선은 넘지 못해,” or “You can’t cross my line,” speaking to the duo as boundary-pushing artists.
The offbeat production shifting through saxophone riffs, racing guitar licks, and ominous Japanese chanting through the chorus only makes the track all the more intriguing of a listen with more treasures to find the more the listener digs. (And it’s so worth it to dig)
