Adventure Rafting on Colorado’s Arkansas River
Exciting | thrilling | epic.
The Royal Gorge is one of the most thrilling and exciting whitewater rafting trips on the Arkansas River. Enjoy the beauty and thrill of God’s creation as you experience 1,000 foot high canyon walls, confront exciting Class V rapids, and see the infamous Royal Gorge Bridge. World-class whitewater rafting starts here on your next Colorado Rafting adventure!
Know Before You Go
The Royal Gorge is a serious section of river facing Class III-V Rapids. The minimum age is 14 at low or moderate flows, 18 at high flows. For adventurous beginners, we recommend the full-day trip, which starts in Bighorn Canyon, giving beginners an appropriate introduction to rafting before facing the more advanced rapids in the Royal Gorge. Previous class III or higher paddling experience and strong swimming ability are recommended for all guests. For the safety of our guests and guides, we cannot take guests who are over 250lbs, individuals with a history of heart problems, or those who are poor swimmers or unable to swim.

We had an awesome time rafting Brown's Canyon! Joel our rafting guide was a laid back experienced professional, who was easy to get along with. He did an excellent job at guiding and instructing us through the rapids we encountered along our way. We would highly recommend this guiding service to anyone who wants to have an awesome time on the Arkansas River. The whole staff at Noah's ark were very courteous and friendly. We will definitely be visiting again on our next trip to the Buena Vista area!
Kim Kroeger
We had an amazing time on our trip with Caleb as our guide! It was very clear that the Noah's Ark team had the most experience as we saw other groups struggle through rapids that we had no problem with. We enjoyed our conversation with our guide, the lovely scenery and a perfect day for rafting. Highly recommend Noah's Ark!!
Brandon Gartner
This was our first whitewater rafting trip. We had 3 kids from 6-13. Avery was our guide and did an amazing job getting us down the river. The experience was way better than we had imagined! Everyone loved it. Would absolutely go again. Thanks to Avery for a most memorable trip!
We had an amazing rafting trip this summer! Noah’s Ark was outstanding across the board. They were professional and it was obvious safety is a priority for them. But they were also personable and engaging. Our guide made an effort to get to know us. She was also very knowledgeable about the river and the area in general. She made sure we saw unique rock formations and interesting things. I highly recommend and would definitely use again.

Ok thrill seekers, this one’s for you! If you’ve ever wanted to try whitewater river rafting then “Noah’s Ark” is here to make that dream a reality for you. A little more than a hour South of Breckenridge you’ll find @noahsarkrafting based in Buena Vista along the Arkansas River. Although our adventure traveled along Class 1-3 rapids, they also offer tours including Class 4 rapids 😳. The entire staff was prepared, supportive, and professional.
Regarding high water in June and July
High water levels in excess of 3,000 CFS can occur in June (and July for 2019) as a result of above average snowfall in the mountains. The Arkansas River is fed by snowmelt, and especially in early season is extremely cold. Higher water levels and cold temperatures can increase the risks to participants, and, specifically those with health concerns or heart problems. Cold water can add additional stress to the body, and, should you fall in, you may be required to swim aggressively to shore or to another boat – a situation that creates extreme physiologic stress.
When higher water levels occur, guests should discuss age restrictions, trip conditions, and trip selection with the Noah’s Ark Reservations Staff. If you have health concerns and specifically heart problems, we recommend talking with your physician prior to the rafting trip.
Is whitewater rafting on the Arkansas River safe?
No. There are risks in any outdoor activity, whether you are rafting, backpacking, rock climbing, or playing on the Browns Canyon Adventure Park. These risks are at the core of the experience and provide the excitement and adventure associated with the activity. Our guides undergo rigorous training that meets & exceeds state requirements. This includes learning principles of risk management and decision making that lead to MINIMIZING, but never completely eliminating, risk.
Noah’s takes the training and preparation of our staff very seriously. One of our company’s highest priorities is teach and training because we desire to provide you with excellence and extraordinary customer service. We incorporate the highest standards of development in all of our training programs.
Noah’s Ark is also one of the few outfitters that conducts in-depth training sessions with our staff in their returning seasons. All Noah’s Ark staff training meets or exceeds the State of Colorado requirements, the US Forest Service requirements, and industry standards in the following areas:
- River Guide Training
- Rock Climbing Guide Training
- Mountaineering Guide Training
- Adventure Park Training
- Trip Leader Training
- Leadership Development Training
- Guide Instructor Training
- Swift Water Rescue Training
- First Aid & CPR Training & Certification
What does all of this mean? It means that we care about our guests, and we are committed to providing the best outdoor experience available. We believe our preparation and attention to detail will provide you with an unforgettable experience.
Will my raft have a guide?
Yes, each raft will have a guide.
Do I need to know how to swim?
While knowing how to swim is not required, it is definitely recommended. Noah’s Ark will provide you with a U.S. Coast Guard approved life jacket that is designed to keep you afloat in the water. Having the ability to swim will increase your comfort level and will also enable you to more quickly get out of the river if you happen to find yourself out of the raft and in the water. We will give you a pre-trip safety talk in which you will be instructed on protecting yourself in the water by identifying and evading hazards in the river, and taught how or when to maneuver back to the raft or get to shore. In addition, you will be instructed in self-rescue techniques where swimming skills are important. *If you are rafting the Royal Gorge or the Numbers (bigger water), you are required to have Class III rafting experience and are expected to know how to handle yourself in the water.
What is the difference between an oar boat, combination boat, and paddle boat?
In an oar boat, the guide will do ALL the work from the center of the boat using his/her oars. Oar boats are ideal for families as well as those looking to just relax, hang out, and enjoy the scenery. An oar boat becomes a combo boat when up to 4 paddles are added for those in the group who would like to paddle during the trip. Being in a paddle boat requires a commitment to paddle the entire length of the trip. The guide steers from the back of the boat, calling out commands to the paddlers who provide the necessary momentum to move the boat down the river. There is less opportunity to hold on in a paddle boat, as you will need to be prepared to paddle through the rapids. The minimum age for a paddle boat is 16, or 14 with previous class III rafting experience; other restrictions may apply depending on the section of river and water level. Your trip leader will work with you to select the right type of boat(s) for your group.
How many people fit in a raft?
An oar boat can hold up to 8 people plus the guide, while a paddle boat can hold up to 7 plus the guide. If you are in a group requiring more than 1 raft your trip leader will work with you to appropriately divide the group into boats.
What should I wear?
Wear quick drying materials, like swimsuits, swim trunks, Underarmour, nylon or synthetic fabrics. Basically, quick-drying athletic clothing is appropriate. Do not wear cotton, as this will keep you cold when it gets wet. No Crocs or Flip-Flops. Wear old tennis shoes or sandals that are made for river activity, with a strong back strap around the ankle, or you may rent water boots at our front desk, along with other rental gear. Sunscreen is highly recommended, and sunglasses with a strap.
Do we need to rent wetsuits?
Wetsuits are available for rent. Some people like to rent wetsuits because they may keep you warmer when in contact with water. Water is colder in the spring, early summer, as well as during “high water” when it is running faster and does not have as much time to warm up. Wetsuits can also help keep you warmer during inclement weather, which is both common and unpredictable in Colorado during the summer months. Wetsuits guard against the potential shock associated with cold water immersion. If you are concerned about getting cold on your trip for any reason, we recommend that you rent a wetsuit for your personal comfort. Wetsuits are advised any time the water levels are above 2800 CFS in the Royal Gorge and 900 CFS in the Numbers. Please refer to the Rentals Chart for more information.
What is the largest life jacket you provide?
The largest Type V life jacket approved by the Coast Guard allows for a 52″ chest. This is what we provide.
How are rapids on the Arkansas River classified?
Please refer to the Rapid Classification Chart for this information.
Are helmets required?
Helmets are required on all whitewater rafting trips.
Why is the minimum age for rafting 6 years old?
There are many issues that come into play in determining the minimum age for whitewater rafting. Two important considerations are the size and maturity level of the child. US Coast Guard approved Type V life jackets do not come in sizes to fit all small children. The ability of the child to not panic, to understand instructions, and to self rescue if they are thrown from the boat is essential. Based on the risk, the water, and the type of gear, we have established that the minimum age for the Browns Canyon section of the river is 6 years old. We may increase the minimum age during peak run-off season.
What if the water is too high or too low to raft?
Noah’s Ark has strict policies in place for each section of water on the Arkansas River. If the water exceeds, or drops below a certain level (measured in CFS), Noah’s Ark may find it necessary to move a trip to another section or cancel a trip entirely.

Our Rafting Trips Make a Splash with Our Guests!
Had the most unbelievable time on the half day excursion, with our guide Free. Super nice guy, extremely knowledgeable on the area, and a great coach for first time white water rafters!
We loved our rafting expedition. Free was an amazing guide who kept us safe yet provided a thrilling experience. We highly recommend Monumental Expeditions to anyone who is looking for a great time on the Arkansas River!
Took our 12 year old twins and had a blast on the Brown's Canyon ride. Very safety conscious and made sure the kids had an especially nice time.
Excellent on river guides. Brendan was fabulous. We had a great time learning about the area, how to read the river and safely shooting the rapids. We were in a raft with only 4 guests, which made the trip very special. They have the capability to do personalized trips. Family owned and low-key.
We did a full day rafting trip down Browns Canyon of the Arkansas river. I have been down the river many times and this was the best trip. Brenndan, our guide was phenomenal and keep us entertained while providing a great and safe experience.

Designed for groups with kids as young as 4 years old, our scenic float is the best way to explore the beauty of Colorado rafting in a safe and relaxing environment.
Go with the flow
Let the rippling river waters gently carry you down a 5-mile stretch of the Arkansas River as you take in the sights and sounds. Moving at nature’s pace allows you to focus your attention on the blue skies, wildlife, and the looks on your kids’ faces as they experience life on the water. To keep things interesting, your guide will take you through a handful of easy class II and III rapids in upper Bighorn Sheep Canyon. These rolling rapids are a great introduction to mild white water, even for our littlest river adventurers.
Get on the same wavelength
Our guides are experts at keeping your kids engaged in the adventure. Large oar boats, which hold 7-8 people, allow our guides to steer, power, and stop the raft to explore every nook and cranny of the river. Children and adults can get in on the action, paddling along with their guide at any time. Depending on the vibe and water level, scenic family rafting trips often stop to swim, splash, and check out that cool rock on the river bank.
We’ll help you tame your wildlife
Kids can quickly go from ansty, to excited, to flat-out bored. We keep the process simple and safe so everyone can get floating with confidence, quickly. First step, check-in and get geared up. Next, we’ll head upstream where your guide will walk you through a brief safety orientation, answer questions, and show you the ins-and-outs of the raft. Then, it’s time to get out and explore the river.
Welcoming white water
We think everyone should get to experience life on the river – young children and grandparents included. We’ve hand-crafted this family rafting trip to build memories and create miles of smiles in the heart of Southern Colorado. See local flora and fauna, towering red rock canyon cliffs, lush cottonwood groves, ponderosa pines, and perhaps even a Bighorn Sheep or two. Want to keep chasing the chill when you get out of the raft? Stay in one of our family cabins or glamping tents, make some s’mores, and gaze at the night sky while you recount the adventures of the day.

Requirements.
Swimming ability Swimming ability is recommended but is not a necessary requirement. You should know that there is always a chance that a participant could fall out of their raft. For this reason, we ask that you inform us while making your reservation if you are a non-swimmer.
During high water levels through the Royal Gorge it is recommended that you have swimming experience to be able to aid in your own rescue should you come out of your raft unexpectedly.
If you are pregnant, you will not be permitted to go rafting Consider that you won’t always be pregnant, but the river will always be here. We do not think it is worth the chance of risking it, no matter how early you are in your pregnancy. We think moms are special – we know you agree and appreciate your cooperation!

What To Wear & Bring
We recommend wearing:
The type of clothing you would wear to the beach such as:
- Quick Drying Shorts
- Board Shorts
- Bathing Suit
- Secure footwear (No Crocs or flip-flops please)
- Synthetic or Polyester t-shirt
Optional items to bring with you:
- Water Bottle
- Sunglasses (we recommend a retaining strap)
- Light weight fleece jacket (if the forecast calls for colder weather)
Pro Tip: Avoid rubbing sunscreen on your forehead. You will be wearing a helmet that will cover your head and sunscreen put on your forehead can run into your eyes creating an uncomfortable burn in your eyes.)
We provide:
- We always provide our guests with FREE USE of wetsuits, river boots (booties) and splash jackets, and of course helmets. And it's all top of the line! These are always available and, when weather conditions warrant it, it's here for you.

- We require helmets on all stretches of river although in areas your guide may let you take them off.
What not to wear:
- No Crocs or flip-flops, please! Secure footwear only.
- Don't wear cotton clothing on your river trip (denim jeans, cotton t-shirts, hoodies, etc.).

Weather & Seasons
Temperatures Earlier summer temperatures tend to be in the 70's to 80's with occasional and often refreshing rain showers and later summer months can reach into the high 90s and are typically drier months.
Trips run rain or shine What's a little rain? You are going to get wet on our rafting trips anyway! In the rare occurrence that the weather becomes too extreme, we reserve the right to alter or cancel trips, for your safety. In the event we change a trip due to water levels, the price of the trip remains the same as we will provide an extended trip on a comparable section of river.
Rafting seasons Our trips run from early April to mid-September and we consider these months to be the best. Typically April and early May, water levels are lower and begin to rise into the middle of May.
Higher water As the water gets higher in volume typically from late May through June and into July the water gets swifter and rapids become larger creating some of the best whitewater in the world.
Moderate water levels In late July through August & September, the air temperatures rise and the water slowly drops in volume usually ending its runoff in the middle of September. All of these months provide an excellent opportunity to get into world class whitewater combined with some of the most amazing scenery seen on any river trip!
In the rare event that sections become un-runnable, we will switch the trip's location to a comparable section of whitewater.
Safety & Rafting Waiver
We issue every guest a Type 5 U.S. Coast Guard approved Personal Flotation Device (PFD, Life Jacket). We also begin each trip with a thorough pre-trip safety orientation to inform you of some of the hazards that can be encountered on and off of the river.

We were the first company to offer this service on the Arkansas River and remain at the forefront of finding new ways to make your rafting trip a safe and enjoyable adventure.
Waiver Any participant under the age of 18 years must have a Release Waiver signed by a parent. Fill out your waiver here , or we will email them to you, and they will be filed electronically upon completion. (No printing necessary)

Capturing your adventure, our guests are stoked about our rafting trips, frequently asked questions, is experience required.
No, the majority of people who go rafting in Colorado are first time rafters. Prior to every trip, you are given a thorough river orientation to inform you of the possible hazards encountered white water rafting.
Before your trip, each guide will go over paddle instructions for you so you know exactly what needs to be done to maneuver your raft down river. It is natural to be apprehensive about whitewater rafting in Colorado but once you experience the thrill it will become addictive and an unforgettable experience! Statistically there are more people injured en route to a rafting outfitters office then there are river rafting.

Which trip should we choose?
Bighorn Sheep Canyon (easiest) If it is your first time rafting or your are experienced and you are not looking for the most challenging rapids we recommend our Bighorn Sheep Canyon trip which consists mostly of class III whitewater rapids.

This is our most popular stretch of river with about 80% of our clientele and is our expertise!
Check out the Compare our raft trips page to get all the details.
