11 of the best last-minute summer getaways

Blue Ridge Mountains at sunrise, Blue Ridge Parkway, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina, Appalachian Mountains, USA

As the steaminess of summer sets in — and with it, long, sunny days followed by warm, starry nights — who doesn't dream of taking off and getting away? We know that there is no one-size-fits-all trip when it comes to summer vacation, though, and everyone needs a little inspiration sometimes. After all, some travelers are searching for ocean breezes and ample pool time, while others might look for destinations with an excellent food scene or a buzzy, cosmopolitan nightlife.

Thankfully, if you're itching for a last-minute summer getaway, it actually isn't too late to plan one. Many of the most sought-after 2024 destinations still have availability within hotels and vacation rentals, and other less-popular spots that fly under the summer travel radar still provide the most important thing about any good escape: a chance to play more than work.

We've rounded up 11 ideas for embracing the season of simple pleasures — even if the planning is a little last-minute.

A seaside city escape: Seattle

last minute summer trips 2023

Located on Puget Sound, the United States' second largest estuary, visitors to Seattle are never far from nature. The Sound's calm waters offer idyllic paddleboarding conditions with views of the Space Needle, distant mountains and nearby evergreen forests. In the summertime, which is the peak of whale-watching season, tours depart from different locations around the city and can include sightings of orcas, humpback whales and other marine life.

According to Kayak, Seattle is also the number-one searched-for domestic destination for summer. When temperatures are typically quite comfortable, summers here can include museum visits combining art and nature at Olympic Sculpture Park and Chihuly Garden and Glass, as well as plenty of fresh seafood, strong coffee and French pastries at Pike Place Market.

Lotte Hotel Seattle, an elegant hotel with Philippe Starck-designed interiors and Puget Sound views, is offering summer packages, including 30% off luxury suites. A luxurious way to begin or end a boat excursion from Seattle, the Seattle Seaside Escape package features a $100 dining credit and a $50 transportation credit for travel to or from the cruise terminal, paired with a guest room upgrade upon availability. If you're interested in learning more about the art of glassblowing, guests of Lotte Hotel Seattle get a discount at Seattle Glassblowing Studio.

Rates for the Seattle Seaside Escape package start at $305 per night. Guests can receive 25% off classes at Seattle Glassblowing with code lotte25.

A warm-weather getaway with a purpose: Honolulu

last minute summer trips 2023

Travelers looking for balmy weather, palm trees and ocean views will find a reliable destination in Honolulu. The summertime waters are calmer than in winter, outdoor temperatures hover in the mid-80s and if there are rain showers, they typically don't last long. In July and August, visitors can enjoy early morning hikes up Diamond Head, visit the evening farmer's market on Wednesdays and explore museums like Doris Duke's Shangri La estate and the Honolulu Museum of Art.

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is framed by Diamond Head and the renowned Queen's Beach surf break. The hotel's two towers represent her homes, Kealohilani ("the brightness of heaven") and Paoakalani ("heavenly fragrance"). The hotel honors her legacy by offering authentic Hawaiian experiences with artifacts displayed throughout and a new Heritage Center with activities such as hula, Hawaiian language lessons and lauhala weaving and ribbon lei making. The resort's Malama Hawaii Package offers even deeper immersion. Guests are shuttled to the private nature reserve Kualoa Ranch to thatch traditional Hawaiian hale (houses) and assist with maintaining the traditional Hawaiian medicinal plant garden. Guests' efforts are rewarded with a trip to a secret island for lunch and water sports.

Back at the hotel, the Queensbreak rooftop deck is one of Honolulu's largest outdoor experiential spaces. It features a family-friendly pool, cabanas and a quieter pool for adults.

Rates for the Malama Hawaii Package start at $450 per night. Use promotional code CUE to book or call reservations at 1-888-236-2427. Nonpackage rates for Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa start at $329 per night or 63,000 Marriott Bonvoy Points per stay, based on availability.

Mexico without the crowds: Riviera Maya

last minute summer trips 2023

Even though it's hot in summer, travelers to Mexico's Riviera Maya are never far from pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters and picturesque pools. On the edge of Mexico's peak season, summer allows more freedom and ease when spring's crowds have largely gone. Just under an hour from Cancun International Airport (CUN), to which many U.S. airports offer direct flights, Riviera Maya also enjoys natural beauty, cultural riches and top-notch gastronomy.

Situated on a 620-acre nature reserve with two miles of white-sand beaches, the Riviera Maya Edition at Kanai is a laidback luxury stay for nature lovers. The lush grounds have rainforest plants, tropical fruit trees and an array of wildlife, including iguanas, spider monkeys and white-nose coatis. The Riviera Maya is also known for clear night skies and abundant stargazing opportunities, and the resort is an ideal home base for these activities. The property's lagoonlike pool, beach club and private pier with lounge-style cabanas always offer ways to stay cool. A cenote-inspired spa with hydrotherapy pools, a private outdoor pool and a Turkish hammam also has a subterranean lounge beneath a bamboo dome used for yoga. Two of Mexico's best chefs, Francisco "Paco" Ruano and Tomás Bermúdez, collaborated on the resort's five restaurants and bars.

The resort's summer packages include Extend the Bliss, which includes a 20% discount with a three-night stay and $100 daily resort credit, and Bed and Breakfast, with breakfast for two at Kitchen included daily.

Rates for the Extend the Bliss package start at $729 per night.

The city lovers summer trip: London

last minute summer trips 2023

With many splashy new hotel openings , fun events and direct flights from U.S. hubs, London is a trendy destination this summer. While summers can be busy, the weather is typically reliable and it's possible to enjoy all the city's beautiful parks and open spaces without the threat of too much rain. There's much to do in July and August, from theater festivals to outdoor concerts to sporting events.

The first hotel property in the U.K. for Accor-owned Raffles Hotels & Resorts, Raffles London at the OWO opened in September 2023. OWO stands for Old War Office, and the hotel is located in a grand historic building in Whitehall where Churchill made some of his most consequential decisions. State offices are now ornate suites balancing Edwardian elegance and British style. Eight Corner Suites are named after influential women leaders and spies connected with the OWO's history. The building's heritage features have been painstakingly preserved, like the Grand Staircase that wraps around a glittering chandelier, the mosaic-tiled floors and oak-paneled walls.

The renovated OWO, a project that took over eight years, also has residences, a Guerlain Spa and three restaurants from chef Mauro Colagreco.

Rates at Raffles London at the OWO start at $1,179 per night.

Caribbean in the offseason: Barbados

last minute summer trips 2023

There are many reasons to visit Barbados in summer when the waters are at their warmest. The annual Crop Over Festival, a celebration of Barbadian history and culture, takes place in July and August. Summer is prime sea turtle hatching time. Barbados is the birthplace of rum, and August is National Rum Month, when bartenders at hotels, restaurants and resorts roll out special concoctions to celebrate. During the summer offseason, visitors can take advantage of less congested beaches and attractions — and the lowest hotel rates all year.

Hilton Barbados Resort on Needham's Point, a tropical peninsula surrounded by the island's two white-sand beaches and turquoise water, is offering an Escape and Explore package for stays from July 10 to Dec. 31 that includes 20% off room rates and a $50 daily resort credit for Hilton Honors members with a three-night minimum. On the grounds of the resort, where every guest room has a balcony and ocean views, history lovers can explore the 17th-century colonial Charles Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where George Washington once dined, and the historic Needham's Point Lighthouse.

The Hilton's beach is the Caribbean's most densely populated hawksbill turtle nesting beach. Toast to a busy day of snorkeling and scuba diving (the resort has an on-property scuba diving facility) with a drink at Water's Edge Beach Bar. It's offering $6 pina coladas all summer.

Hilton Barbados Resort from $251, but Hilton Honors members can save over 17% on the lowest rates for a starting rate of $208 a night.

For festivals and culture: Santa Fe

last minute summer trips 2023

A crossroads for culture, Santa Fe, New Mexico, comes alive each summer with three major markets: The International Folk Art Market features artists from 52 countries and everything from hand-woven Moroccan rugs to Colombian ceramics, and the Traditional Spanish Market in late July celebrates New Mexico's Hispanic culture and features handmade traditional art from hundreds of local Hispanic artists. And then, in August, the century-old Santa Fe Indian Market brings together more than 1,000 native artists to share Native-made jewelry, pottery, paintings, sculpture and photography on Santa Fe's central plaza. These markets are the best way for visitors to immerse themselves in the magic of Santa Fe and its artistic, musical and cultural confluence.

On 57 rolling acres in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, the recently renovated Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado Santa Fe is a luxurious getaway in the City Different. New coral-, rust- and copper-hued guest rooms pay homage to the high desert landscape. The resort has an in-house adventure center where expert guides can arrange hiking, mountain biking and equine experiences; a full-service spa on a vortex site; and a signature restaurant, Terra, serving inventive New Mexican cuisine like steak for two with asparagus and green chile mac and cheese.

Summer packages include the Stay Longer — Fourth Night Free , which also includes 15% off on-site adventure packages. New for summer 2024, the Discover Santa Fe package offers two complimentary experiences, like in-casita s'mores nights and private family hikes.

Rates at Four Seasons Rancho Encantado Santa Fe start at $900 per night and $675 per night for Stay Longer — Fourth Night Free.

The budget-conscious food lovers trip: Bogota

The average cost of meals for a day in Bogota is roughly $20 to $30 per person. In New York City, it's about $45, for comparison. During summer, travelers can experience Colombian culture and tradition on Colombian Independence Day (July 20), when the capital hosts parades, music and dancing.

The W Bogota in the trendy Usaquen neighborhood has colonial architecture but dramatic interiors inspired by the legend of El Dorado, including a glitzy gold lobby. Maximalist styles like pops of gold and floral wall and ceiling coverings are found in guest rooms as well, with floor-to-ceiling windows showcasing stunning capital views. The W has several great restaurants, including a microbrewery and the Latin American restaurant Jairo, which celebrates Colombia's farming tradition.

Summer rates at W Bogota start at $160 per night.

An unexpected glamping getaway: Cape Cod

last minute summer trips 2023

From dreamy sunsets to world-class surfing, there are many reasons travelers think of summer when they think of San Diego . While beaches should be explored for plenty of sun and splashing in warm waves, one of the best summertime attractions is actually the Del Mar racetrack , founded by Bing Crosby in 1937. The summer racing season draws thousands to witness and wager on elite Thoroughbred racing and enjoy Del Mar's tony coastal setting. The 2024 summer racing season kicks off July 20 and runs until Sept. 8, with racing Thursdays to Sundays.

Tucked into a lush canyon, Rancho Valencia Resort & Spa is a luxury resort with hacienda-style architecture, a celebrated tennis program and a relaxing spa. The resort will be hosting its After Pony Party on Saturday, July 20, from 6 to 10 p.m. In addition to a night in a luxurious suite with vaulted wooden ceilings and a fireplace, the resort's Perfecta Package gives guests insider access to the race-day action with a prerace visit to the paddocks with a behind-the-scenes stable tour, a private table in the Turf Club, an exclusive lounge where you can place bets and order food and drinks and a VIP trip to the Winner's Circle.

The starting rate for the Perfecta Package is $1,499.

For swimming and star gazing: Lake Powell, Arizona

At Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase, 14 miles from Lake Powell's main marina, visitors can easily have an epic wild swimming and boating experience on the lake's calm waters. It's easy to rent boats and other gear at the marina.

Also the first-ever DarkSky-certified lodging property in the world, Under Canvas Lake Powell-Grand Staircase visitors can experience unforgettable stargazing. The plateau location and low light pollution allow for the clearest views of meteor showers, planets and the Milky Way. Stargazer tents have viewing windows, so you never miss a fabulous nighttime view.

For arts and the outdoors: Asheville, North Carolina

last minute summer trips 2023

In the Blue Ridge Mountains, summer in Asheville includes mountain breezes, shaded hikes, hidden swimming holes and whitewater adventures. There's whitewater rafting on the French Broad River just 30 minutes away. In town, summer is packed with outdoor art and music festivals (like the nearly 100-year-old Mountain Dance and Folk Festival Aug. 1-3), alfresco dining and rooftop bars for evening cocktails. The 19th-century Biltmore estate, with gardens, art exhibitions and a winery, always offers a fun way to escape summer heat and humidity.

In the lively River Arts District, The Radical, a hotel in a 1920s warehouse, is teaming up with local hiking experts at Blue Ridge Hiking Company for its new summer package offering the best of Asheville. The Rad Outdoors package includes private guided hiking excursions to Asheville's best peaks and picturesque valleys. The package also includes local kombucha, late checkout and a $25 food and beverage credit to be enjoyed at the hotel's eateries AfterGlow, Golden Hour or The Roof, one of the best places in the city for taking in peachy-toned sunsets.

9 Last Minute Vacation Deals For One Last Summer Vacation

Article By: FTF Staff

To help you save on one last summer vacation, we’ve rounded up nine great last minute vacation deals. Picture how envious your neighbors will be when you head out on a late summer and early fall trip!

What’s better than finding an iced Frapuccino or frozen yogurt robot at a road stop? A vacation deal!

The two weeks around Labor Day are the perfect time to enjoy a summer vacation deal. That’s especially true after 2023’s record-breaking summer travel season . Even the pundits can’t believe that despite crowds, delayed flights, overbooked hotels, wildfires, heat waves and flooding, summer travel has been booming.

Why End Of Summer Is A Great Time For Last Minute Deals

Just look at the data uncovered by Allianz Partners USA Vacation Confidence Index, the industry’s litmus test of traveler confidence. Travel sentiment has never been higher, with more than 62% of Americans having taken a vacation in the past year.

All that success means travel businesses are now willing to cut last minute vacation deals to finish the summer season with a bang.

Here are nine of our favorites, from beach, cruise and golf to action-packed or flop n’ drop getaways.

1.  Europe On My Mind

Passengers relaxing on the upper deck of Indochine II, a river boat from CroisiEurope sailing the Mekong River.

Rolling heat waves and sky-high hotel rates generated a lot of talk about Europe the past few months. You probably remember that summer kicked off with King Charles III coronation in London. Maybe your family was lucky enough to get tickets to the priceless Vermeer show in Amsterdam or one of the major festivals.

If not, there are still great last minute vacation sales from CroisiEurope , a leading river cruise company based in France. Did you know the company was just nominated for both the Silver Travel Advisor Awards 2023 and for the best “Cruise Company” in the World Luxury Travel Awards? August is a good time to explore lesser-known destinations while European families are at the beach. CroisiEurope runs river cruises along Portugal’s coast , to Venice and Mantua , Montenegro and Spain’s villages of Andalusia .

Europe River Trip Last Minute Vacation Deals

During summer, they feature kids cruise free deals for ages 16 and under sharing a cabin. Plus, they have several late summer departure s on sale now. Picture yourselves spending a week floating down the Rhine River , cabin, all meals, all shore excursions included, for just $1,764 per person.

Atlantis, the mega-resort on Paradise Island , has just launched its 2023 Endless Summer Sale for families who are still ready to play. If you want to know why we call it a mega -resort, please read Kristen and Will Guthrie’s article about Atlantis and the beautiful Paradise Island off Nassau.

Families can get a 4th Night Free at The Coral and The Royal Towers plus a $150 Daily Experience Credit. Atlantis’ special rates are valid only for bookings made between Aug. 14 and Sept. 30.

3.  Big Ship Cruise Vacation Deals To The Caribbean or Baja Peninsula

Cruises — more popular than ever – are great values for our inflationary economy. And if you want to get away but don’t want to hassle the paperwork, money changing, language challenge, etc. they are ideal. On what’s called a “closed-loop” cruise – where you board and disembark at a U.S. port – U.S. citizens only need a boarding pass and a government photo I.D.

Despite cruising being more popular than ever, new ships keep on launching. That means there are always last minute vacation deals to be had.

Carnival Cruises Last Minute Vacation Deals

At Carnival, for example, Caribbean cruise specials include a 4-day Miami > Key West > Cozumel > Miami route averaging $459 pp based on two to a cabin.

Baja California cruises through the Pacific are a cheaper option for our West of the Mississippi families. Carnival is selling a 3-day Los Angeles (port of Long Beach) cruise to Ensenada and back that averages $389 per person; port fees and taxes are additional.  Check back to their website often as rates rise and fall with demand.

4. There’s More To Barbados Than Rihanna

The action happens off the First Street Jetty, viewing the hundreds of anticipated competitors is open to all.

The 6th Annual Mural Festival returns to the ViBe Creative District Aug. 18 – 27. During this summer’s 10-day festival, 14 Virginia artists will be painting new murals in front of the public. Your teens may know a set of oars when they see them, but until they’ve rowed down a river with OARS they haven’t been whitewater rafting. More than 50 years have passed since the California based company began running the Western rivers. This year, with the tremendous rainfall in much of the West, they’ve had one of their best seasons ever. And it promises to be one of their longest seasons too.

Their six golf courses include one rated by GolfWeek as among the country’s top 200 places to play. Pamper yourself at two spas after a round of pickleball, goat yoga and more. Or, just relax and enjoy your family in an environment that is very unlike home.

If you haven’t had any vacation at all yet, you’re probably ready to really get away. The small ship cruise company, Uncruise Adventures , carries only 22 to 86 passengers aboard their ships so you and your family can focus on a region’s natural beauty, a destination’s culture, and the local wildlife. It’s Not Too Late to Grab Deals for Summer Travel

Be smart to snag bargains.

a woman packs her suitcase for a trip

Elaine Glusac,

Once upon a pre-pandemic time, making vacation plans at the last minute often meant scoring a deal on a discounted hotel room or tour. Now, strong demand for travel — a recent survey by the planning website The Vacationer found nearly 85 percent of Americans plan to travel this summer, up nearly 5 percent from last year — suggests procrastinators won’t be rewarded.

But don’t get discouraged; get smart. The following are strategies for how, when and where to travel to stretch your vacation dollar this summer .

Save on getting there

Flying or driving , transportation is a major travel expense that warrants careful research.

“Inflation is putting pressure on everything globally, and the airline business is without exception,” says Brett Keller, chief executive officer at the online agency Priceline. “Even the high cost of the snacks you’re eating on board your flight contributes to price hikes.”

Priceline predicts the average domestic round-trip ticket this summer will cost $450; the average price in 2022 was $378, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics.

Going.com , a membership service for inexpensive airfares formerly known as Scott’s Cheap Flights, puts the ideal window for finding domestic flight deals at one to three months in advance. If you’ve missed that, try searching more creatively.

Going suggests investigating open-jaw flights in which you depart from one city and return to another. So, you might consider flying from Miami to San Francisco and returning from Oakland to Fort Lauderdale , or any similar combination. Click “nearby airports” or use the “multi-city” option on flight search engines like Skyscanner, Kayak or Google Flights to get a robust list of choices.

If you’re driving, download the app  GasBuddy , which will show prices for gas stations, allowing motorists to comparison shop. Google Maps also allows you to search an area for gas stations and lists their prices, while the app  Upside  has cash-back offers on gas purchases. Memberships at discount retailers like Costco, Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale Club can also save on gas.

If you’ll be traveling on toll roads, get a payment transponder, which is both more convenient and offers better rates. E-ZPass works in most states from Maine to Florida and several states in the Midwest.

Flexibility rules

Timing, as usual, is everything. Avoid holiday weekends, when rates tend to peak. According to the bus-and-train-travel-booking platform Wanderu, vacation rentals in New Orleans climb by as much as 172 percent over the July 4 holiday, and they more than double over Labor Day in Saratoga Springs, New York. “Be creative with timing,” says Ted Rossman, a senior industry analyst with the personal finance site Bankrate. “Fly midweek instead of a weekend. Stay Monday to Friday in a hotel rather than Wednesday to Sunday. You’ll get the same number of nights but cheaper.”

For best results, be flexible on timing and on your destination. House-sitting, for example, can be a rock-bottom means of travel — you stay for free in exchange for light housekeeping and possible pet-sitting — but it can be hard to align a dream destination and ideal dates. If you’re flexible this summer, you might find a home in Kauai, Hawaii, for a week, or a two-bedroom house in Sausalito, California, on the listing service  TrustedHousesitter .

Let the deal suggest the destination by browsing travel sales sites like Travelzoo, Priceline or Expedia. A recent listing on Travelzoo featured 10 nights in the Galápagos Islands for $1,599, including flights.

Many last-minute deals require you to find your own hasty airfare, which can eat up any savings. To get around this, check out the bundled listings of airline-owned vacation operators such as American Airlines Vacations and United Vacations. For example, Southwest Vacations from Southwest Airlines recently listed five nights at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida, for $737 a person, including flights.

Lodging hacks

Like air travel, hotel pricing is highly dynamic, subject to how busy a hotel is, its location and the amenities. To get the lay of the land, use the search engine Google Travel, which allows you to input a destination and dates to generate a map of available hotels. For example, search New York City to see where and how much hotels cost, from a $845-a-night luxury hotel on Central Park to a $198 bargain option on the Lower East Side.

Don’t forget to search vacation rental platforms for more overnight options. The service Vrbo maintains a page devoted to new listings, which are often offered at a 20 percent discount. Airbnb allows travelers to search with flexible dates over a weekend, for a week or even a monthlong stay, which can turn up slow periods when rates are lower.

Thrifty destination ideas

Deals this summer may be elusive, but they’re not extinct.

The personal finance website WalletHub  recently conducted a study of destinations around the country based on factors like cost of living and travel costs and hassles — which includes flight prices as well as delays and length of travel — to come up with the best summer travel destinations. The top three with the lowest costs and fewest hassles are Santa Rosa, California, a good base for exploring the wineries and coast of Sonoma County; Milwaukee, with vibrant art and culture on Lake Michigan; and Salt Lake City, gateway to more than 60 state and national parks within a few hours’ drive.

Wanderu also picked Salt Lake City among its top four least expensive summer destinations based on vacation rental prices, alongside Oklahoma City, Baltimore and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

5 last-minute summer getaways — or fall weekend trips — from New York City

Restaurant Matilda at the Henson

Restaurant Matilda at the Henson in the Catskills.

Another year of summer travel is coming to a close.

And maybe that’s not a bad thing. This season saw record visitor numbers in Europe, up 12% from 2023. That prompted tax hikes meant to curb overtourism (some say to little avail), and even antitourism protests, not to mention the all-too-familiar deluge of FOMO-inducing social media posts.

So before you slip too deeply into a post-vacation fog, take heart. There are still a few glorious weeks of summer left, and then early autumn will usher in its annual leaf-peeping mania. There’s plenty of time left for warm-weather excursions, especially as record heat gives way to more pleasant temperatures.

last minute summer trips 2023

Sweetening the deal: While all eyes this summer were on Paris, Greece’s Santorini and Italy’s Lake Como, the American Northeast was basking in the glow of new hotels and inns that promise their own glamorous getaways, all quickly accessible from New York City.

Hemlock Neversink, for example, is a new wellness resort in the western Catskills that claims 6 miles of wilderness trails, a goat sanctuary and an over-the-top spa within its private domain. It’s the perfect last hurrah to summer, filled with bonfires, arts and crafts, hiking and heavenly massages—and, as the leaves of its great oaks turn yellow and orange for fall, it’s also a worthy antidote to the end-of-summer blues.

Here are the five best new Northeast spots for a quick weekend away from the city, depending on what kind of break you’re seeking.

Best for a spa weekend: Hemlock Neversink

Where: Sullivan County, New York Distance from the city : About two hours by car The lofty reincarnation of a 1970s destination spa called New Age really does live up to its old name. But this 230-acre retreat, which opened last October, offers an updated twist on new-age wellness. Gone are the stringent dietary restrictions and prescriptive programming — not to mention the colonic room. Now, the place gives off a laid-back summer-camp vibe. You can make candles, learn to knit or take up painting in the activity building; join a movement class in the studio or take a dip in the retro-cool solarium pool. Or tap into simpler times by stargazing, s’mores-making or hiking with goats.

The old guest quarters have been updated, too, with wood furnishings bearing classic Quaker spindle design, custom-patterned blankets and skylights that welcome each morning’s first rays of sun. (If your wellness journey requires more shut-eye, the electronic shades are a blessing.) And its Bittersweet restaurant doesn’t peddle your classic wellness retreat food, either. The menu includes daily changing prix fixe options, featuring such dishes as banh mi tofu wraps and skirt steak with grilled chicories. More information

Best for one last beach break: Silver Sands Motel

Where: Greenport, on Long Island Distance from the city: About two hours by car

To see how the North Fork has grown in popularity as the cool kids’ alternative to the been-there-done-that Hamptons, look no further than this 1950s motel, which was stripped down to its studs and converted into a super-stylish hangout for the jet set. One of its most prized features is original: It has its own private beach, a rarity in these parts. But now the property also includes all the perks of a veritable oceanfront resort, with 12 standalone bungalows, beach houses and cottages complementing the 20 motel rooms that face Peconic Bay and Shelter Island.

Despite all those additions, a retro milieu remains. There are giant Noguchi-style lanterns, pops of vibrant color and, in the just-completed Casa de Buddy beach house, iconic furnishings such as a De Sede DS-600 modular sofa. The two restaurants from chef Ryan Hardy (Charlie Bird, Pasquale Jones) meld old-school and new-school, too: Eddie’s, the hard-to-get-into beach club, is a perfect complement to the 1950s-style diner Nookies. Best for history lovers: The Norumbega

Where: Camden, Maine Distance from the city: A 90-minute flight to Bangor International Airport, plus a 30-minute drive

There’s no dearth of quaint bed-and-breakfasts in Camden, but there’s only one castle. Set a stone’s throw away from Penobscot Bay, a 10-minute walk from Camden’s harbor and town center, the Norumbega was constructed in the late 1800s by the inventor Joseph Barker Stearns as an homage to Europe’s great regal homes. Although it changed hands a few times in the ensuing century, today it remains in remarkably splendid condition under the auspices of its newest owners, Brett Haynie and Will Tims. The innkeepers — a trained opera singer and an architect, respectively — oversaw a stunning restoration of its extravagant wood details, turreted architecture and beautifully manicured grounds to make every stay as opulent as Stearns surely would have liked.

Stay the night in Stearns’ old library — now a duplex-style guest room with thousands of books lining the mezzanine — or the Penthouse, carved into the castle’s old eaves, where the inventor preferred to sleep on rainy nights. On the main level, admire a level of artistry virtually unknown today: elaborate carved fireplaces and benches, intricate coffers and decorative floors. It’s all complemented by Haynie and Tims’ collection of art, books and antique objects. More information

Best for leaf-peeping luxury: The Weston

Where: Weston, Vermont Distance from the city: About four hours by car

Vermonters will tell you the summer crowds are nothing compared with the fall swarms. Just when the season winds down in other destinations, the cooler weather brings leaf peepers in droves. This year the most in-the-know of them will be headed to Vermont’s Green Mountains to visit the Weston, a country-style retreat from the same multigenerational hospitality clan behind the Carlyle in Manhattan and the Saranac Inn in upstate New York.

For the Sharp family’s newest addition — which it’s dubbed the “crown jewel” of its portfolio — the goal was to create something intimate, with just nine guest rooms. Each one feels like a much-loved bedroom in a private residence, with hand-painted fireplaces, 18th century antique cabinetry, Diptyque toiletries and soaking tubs. Even so, the grand hospitality of the family’s well-known hotels is baked into the experience, with a French bistro, an extensive wine cellar, a farm and a compact spa-and-wellness facility. Put yourself in the team’s hands, and they’ll curate all sorts of local experiences for you, from pheasant hunting to glassblowing workshops. More information

Best for a classic inn experience: The Henson

Where: Windham, New York Distance from the city: About two hours by car

Hensonville is one of the Catskills region’s many one-stoplight towns, but its location near the base of Windham Mountain—a beloved ski resort and posh members club — makes it a prime spot for a getaway any time of year. Owners Danielle and Ely Franko purchased the hamlet’s only hotel, then the ailing Hensonville Hotel, in late 2021 and spent more than two years meticulously transforming it from dusty old inn to magnificent 16-room design retreat. The finished product is filled with custom woodwork, vintage midcentury furniture finds and an extensive collection of art, including a beautiful wall of painted portraits inherited from Ely’s Turkish grandparents.

The restaurant, Matilda, is a destination unto itself: It’s a collaboration with chef Jeremiah Stone and restaurateur Fabian von Hauske Valtierra of New York City’s beloved Contra. Dishes such as the smoked steelhead trout, Amish chicken and Highland Hollow strip loin make delicious use of the region’s agricultural abundance—and they’re made even better when paired with views of Danielle’s flowering gardens, just beyond the dining terrace. Man United gave Roy Keane what he wants in summer transfer window as Ineos changes laid bare

Roy keane hasn't been afraid to voice an opinion on manchester united over the years with an infamous rant about four players last year catching the attention of many.

Three Manchester United players who were publicly criticised by Roy Keane are now no longer at Old Trafford - with two departing during the recently-closed summer transfer window.

It's been a busy summer at United as co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos group continue to transform the club's footballing operations. New sporting director Dan Ashworth has helped to sign five new first-team players to strengthen Erik ten Hag 's squad this summer.

One of the changes to how United now approach transfers has drawn almost as much acclaim as new signings, with the Reds earning reasonable transfer fees for some of their player sales. Among those to leave have been defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka to West Ham and midfielder Scott McTominay to Napoli .

And both McTominay and Wan-Bissaka were once included in an infamous rant from United legend Keane after the Reds lost 3-2 at Arsenal in January 2023, just days after conceding a late equaliser to Crystal Palace. Midfielder Fred and left-back Luke Shaw were also on the receiving end of Keane's criticism with Shaw now the only player still at United.

“I think the last few days have been difficult with the dropping points last minute against Palace and the defeat today, so yeah that’s what the game does to you,” he said on Sky Sports. “United weren’t at their best, but you think they could have hung on for the draw, take a point and move on, but it goes back to where United made progress.

“But then come the end of the game Shaw’s still at left-back – question marks over him – Wan-Bissaka, Fred’s back in midfield, McTominay, it’s as if United haven’t moved on from their problems of the past.

“I’m not just blaming those players, because it was a tough game and you’ve got to give credit to Arsenal, but it is a reality check. I’ve said it the last few weeks: United are well short.”

With three of those players now out the doors at Old Trafford, United can finally give Keane what he wants and 'move on from their problems of the past'.

Derby County transfer deadline day LIVE as Harness signs after Phillips arrival

The Rams are in the market for more signings as they attempt round off their summer business and Nat Phillips is set to join

  • Updated 22:51, 30 AUG 2024

last minute summer trips 2023

Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the Derby County summer transfer deadline day as Paul Warne aims to wrap up some last-minute deals - and one appears to be getting closer.

The Rams chief and his recruitment team will hope to get their transfers across the line in what is always a frantic finale to the window closing with Nat Phillips homing in on a move from Liverpool on a season-long loan.

Warne says Derby could be in the market for three signings as they look to conclude their business with a striker at the top of the list followed by a centre-back and potentially another midfielder. This week Derby completed a move for Tawanda Chirewa from Wolves on loan and the Rams are hoping to add more to their attacking arsenal.

While this is ongoing, Derby are busy preparing for a home game against Bristol City on Saturday (3pm) which will see the return of Max Bird after he made his switch to the Robins in the summer.

Stay with us throughout the day as we bring you all the news, gossip and reaction as it happens.

  • DONE DEAL 20:32
  • It's happening - Liverpool defender inbound 14:11
  • Free transfers? 12:16

That's your lot

So that wraps up Derby County's deadline day. Disappointing that striker didn't get over the line, but wasnt' through the lack of effort. But some of the money that was being asked for in terms of the likes of Tom Cannon were just too exorbitant really. Derby really liked Ali Al-Hamadi, but he stayed put at Ipswich so that was another target down. Free agent market still an option and there are some interesting names on there.

Derby County have clinched the signing of Ipswich Town winger Marcus Harness on loan.

In what was their second deal of deadline day , after the arrival of Nat Phillips, the Championship promotion winner has put pen to paper on a deal until the end of the season.

Harness played an integral role in Ipswich's promotion push last season as the Tractor Boys secured promotion to the Premier League.

The winger has featured twice for Kieran McKenna's side this season which came on the opening day in a 2-0 defeat against Liverpool and then in the 4-1 reverse at Manchester City.

Last season Harness made 39 appearances in all competitions for Town and will be reunited with his former Ipswich team-mate Kayden Jackson who signed at the club this summer.

Hold tight....

My friends, don't go to bed just yet.

We're still here

An hour and a half to go and we're still waiting to see if Derby can get that striker through the door.

Derby County have confirmed the arrival of Liverpool defender Nat Phillips on loan from Liverpool.

The centre-back has put pen to paper on a deal that will run the course of the season as the club made its breakthrough in their search for reinforcements.

Phillips completed the formalities of his switch at Derby today and is a high-profile addition to the backline having had Premier and Champions League experience. The 27-year-old made his breakthrough into the first team under Jurgen Klopp and has gone on to make 29 appearances for the Reds.

But new boss Arne Slot does not see him in his plans and has agreed to sanction his departure to Pride Park. Last season Phillips spent time on loan at Cardiff City as he helped them stay clear of relegation in the Championship and won praise for his performances.

Just four hours to go

Will Derby get that striker? That's the big question as Derby hope to confirm the arrival of Nat Phillips from Liverpool. The clock is ticking.

Sven tribute

Gordon is on the move.

Former Derby County winger Kaide Gordon could be set to face his former club this season as Norwich City close in on a deal for the Liverpool youngster.

Gordon looks set to join on a season-long loan which will then trigger Abu Kamara's move to Hull City that could rise above £5m.

Gordon left Derby for Anfield in 2021 and made the breakthrough into the first team at Anfield under former boss Jurgen Klopp . His successor Arne Slot has now sanctioned his departure to Carrow Road with the Canaries hoping to beat the 11pm deadline.

Gordon, who made one appearance for Derby, will hope his move to Norwich can help further his development after suffering a nightmare time due to injury related to his growth.

But he is now back fit and this would be his first loan move away from Anfield. Speaking about his aims for this season back in the summer, Gordon said in an interview with the Liverpool's club media. "Just get minutes, to be honest, wherever it is," Gordon said back in July to Liverpool's channels. "Just hopefully get minutes."

Nice work....

Jurgen klopp was a fan of phillips.

Derby County are hoping to clinch a loan move for Liverpool defender Nat Phillips on deadline day as the Rams made a breakthrough in their pursuit of a centre-back.

Phillips has been cleared to undergo a medical at Pride Park with the defender currently not in the plans of new boss Arne Slot. Liverpool had turned down a £4m offer from Trabzonspor earlier in the window because it did not meet their £10m valuation.

But now he has been given the green light to move to Derby on loan for the rest of the season in what is a coup for head coach Paul Warne . Phillips came through the ranks at Anfield with Jurgen Klopp handing him his Premier League debut in 2020 in a 2-1 win against West Ham.

And here's what he has had to say about the defender.

It's happening - Liverpool defender inbound

Derby County look set to clinch the loan signing of Nat Phillips from Liverpool as the Rams made a breakthrough in their bid to sign a centre-back.

According to Paul Joyce from the Times, the Reds centre-back will join the club on loan in what is an excellent capture for Rams head coach Paul Warne.

It is understood he has been given the green light to undergo a medical and will spend the rest of the season at Pride Park.

Free transfers?

Premier League loans are the order of the day as it stands, but Paul Warne admitted yesterday that free transfers could also be an option. Free agents released inside the window are permitted to sign for clubs outside it.

Last year Derby signed Dwight Gayle as a back-up measure when James Collins got injured and it is something they have done before. Here Derbyshire Live takes a look at the strikers that may be of interest and are available for nothing.

Here's four strikers who could do a job....

Rowett - Why I said no to major Derby transfer

Gary Rowett's column this week is very interesting about managers and what it is like on deadline day. He also speaks about the time Derby were offered a striker for millions, how they were prepared to pay it until he said no. The final day of the transfer window is finally here and I suspect Derby County and Stoke will be considering their options ahead of the deadline later on tonight.

As a manager it can be a bit of a strange affair because you're sat there thinking with some incredulity about how you've had 10 to 12 weeks to get business done, but then most of the time it comes down to one final day. In an ideal world, all clubs would like their business done before the last day because there are occasions when you can be forced into a decision that you've not really had time to think or reflect on whether they would be the right deals.

After training is finished, I would have all the analysts in, the whole recruitment department and whatever the deadline is you'd be getting ready to react. You might have deals you are working on that day you're hoping are going to come to fruition. I had a scenario at Millwall last year where we were trying to sign Kieffer Moore from Bournemouth.

We thought he was going to be sent out on loan in the summer. I believe the club had agreed a deal, but Bournemouth couldn't quite get a striker in.

But you have to be there to react just in case something just drops on you and as you head into the day, if it doesn't you scurry around to see if there's another deal out there that can be done. It is a little bit like that and can become a very reactionary day. And I think the only way you can do it is be as prepared as you can and have a list of maybe seven players that you'd be interested in and be ready to make quick decisions.

Derby state of play

When Paul Warne was predictably asked for his thoughts on deadline day, Derby County's head coach gave the question some careful thought when addressing what he hopes to achieve on the final day of the transfer window.

Earlier this week, Warne said he expected late-night pizza at Moor Farm on a day that could easily throw a deal under his nose when he least expects it. It is clear that there are two signings that he would like to do ahead of the 11pm deadline and the club will endeavour to pull them off ahead of the 11pm cutoff.

The ultimate priority is a striker and a new centre-back and it is going to be a race against time to get both deals across the line in the remaining hours which are as unpredictable as they are stressful.

Derby's pursuit of a forward has been well-documented and it is a challenge given the vast sums of money that are being thrown around the division. Warne said he does have room in the budget to make additions, but not quite at the level some other clubs are spending across the league.

What has Warne said...

Warne was asked about transfers yesterday and here's what he had to say.....

"I want something along the top line. If I can't get a nine that's better than the nines that we've got, then I'm not going to get one.

"I'm not going to get a nine to come in and be fifth choice. If we can get a nine, great. We've always wanted a physical presence.

"If we can't get the nine and a better seven or 11 or 10 comes in, we'll have to look at it. We want another defender because while Eiran Cashin's injury was innocuous, if something would have happened to Sonny Bradley against Barrow, we could go between September and January with with one centre-back.

"I know people can fill in, but this isn't a league that you can have people who can just 'fill in'. You can get away with it in League One in certain games and a lot of games because you have a lot of the ball.

"But in the Championship, you can't just have a left-back or a right winger playing centre-back for six games because there is a very good chance you're going to get tucked up. We are trying to strengthen in those positions and we're trying to get the right people for the club."

Good morning

It's an early start today as the Rams prepare for the final day of the window. Still some business to do and you sense it is a big day in that respect given there are still holes in the squad that need to be addressed.

Striker being a top priority closely followed by a centre-back.
