Bike tours across Switzerland The Ultimate Adventure Holiday in Europe

No other week long bike tour can give you this much diversity, history and outdoor grandeur. Before anything else, Bike Switzerland.

Bike Switzerland is Switzerland’s premier bicycle tour company. Based in Geneva, Europe, our staff is made up of educators living here in Switzerland who are devoted to intercultural exchange and cycling. Given our Swiss background, our tours emphasize value, authenticity and luxury.

Our four itineraries will take cyclists on backroads to cross the entire country. We currently offer four different bicycle tours in Switzerland at three different levels: the Lite Crossing for moderate cycling, the Challenge Crossing for cyclists looking for longer days and more climbing and the Jura and Alpine tours which are road bike tours more suitable for serious cyclists.

These four itineraries can be experienced in different ways. Our guided bicycle tours offer cyclists memorable luxury accommodations in castles, monasteries, chalets and spa hotels. Guided tours allow guests to experience Swiss gourmet cuisine with catered picnics and award-winning restaurants. The guided program also offers riders a variety of experiences: wine-tasting, cheese making, breakfast on a farm, mountain hikes and village festivals. Our experienced guides know the country well and

through them our guests come to understand and appreciate the deep history and traditions that line our route. Our independent bicycle tour in Switzerland gives autonomous riders the same great accommodations, bike routes and also include daily baggage transfers, cell phones and GPS guidance. Bicycling Switzerland need not be too difficult or too expensive, and we’d like to get the word out.

…Whichever tour you choose, guests need not worry about bringing their bikes. Bike Switzerland partners with Trek Bicycles to outfit each of our riders with the perfect bicycle for exploring the Swiss backroads.

Day 1 — Galliard to Seyssel (photo by Kim Hopkins)

 Tour Description   Daily Program

Daily program

Day 1: Arrive in Geneva (Option A+) or Gaillard (Option A) Arrive in Geneva/Gaillard at your leisure and check-in to your hotel. Take time to discover the stylish city of Geneva. It’s a gem of international organizations, finance, and culture, meshing Old World with New, and is a delight to explore. The crescent-shaped Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) provides a marvelous treat for your eyes and plentiful photo fodder. Dinner is at leisure. Due to the fact that Geneva is the culinary capital of Switzerland, there is a variety of restaurants and eateries, sure to please every palate. Overnight in Geneva (A+) or Gaillard (A)

Day 2: Option A+: Geneva – Seyssel (39 miles/63 km, 2,230 ft/680 m of climbing) Option A: Gaillard – Seyssel (43 miles/70 km, 2,430 ft/740 m of climbing) Meet your tour company contact in the morning to go over the itinerary and outfitting of bikes. The highlights of your route include cycling along the famous Rhône River, admiring the heart-warming views over the charming wine-making villages of Dardagny and Satigny, and exploring impressive forts, cathedrals, and chateaus.

Conquer the westernmost point of Switzerland by bike at the village of Chancy and then cross the border into France. Unmissable here is the Fort de l’Ecluse, founded by a Duke of Savoy, which is an elevated fort, built out of a striking rock formation and a natural entrance of the Rhône Valley into France between the Vuache hills and the Jura. Your home for the night is in Seyssel, a small “double-town” in both the Haute-Savoie (Upper Savoy) and the Ain departments on the Rhône River located between two dams. Overnight in Seyssel

Day 3: Seyssel – Aix-les-Bains (29 miles/46 km, 1,375 ft/420 m of climbing) The views on today’s ride, including the 14 summits of the Bauges mountain range on one side, as well as Mont de la Charvaz and Col-du-Chat on the other, are some of the major highlights of this tour. Sheer cliffs seem to spring up magically from the water and the mountains surround you in protective peacefulness.

Lake Bourget (Lac du Bourget) is the largest natural lake of glacial origin and the deepest entirely within France. It was the only home to the now extinct Bezoule, a freshwater whitefish that fed at muddy depths of 70 to 80 meters (230-260 ft) and reportedly disappeared in the 1960s.

Cycle past the impressive site of the medieval Château de Montverran in Culoz, which was built on a rock in 1316 and, in more recent times, inspired the likes of the Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev. Pedal on to the spa town of Aix-les-Bains, which was known for its baths as far back as the Roman Empire, with numerous Roman ruins still remaining. Overnight in Aix-les-Bains

Day 4: Aix-les-Bains – Sainte‐Hélène‐sur‐Isère ( 41 miles/66 km, 2,230 ft/680 m climbing) Pedaling through Chambéry, a town of art and history and the heart of Savoy, is a central feature to the route for today. Located in a wide valley between the Bauges and Chartreuse Mountain ranges and regional park areas at the crossroads of ancient trade routes, the old-town section of Chambéry is one of the most remarkable in France.

Along the way take in the ruins of the 10th century fortress, Château de Miolans, overlooking the rich wine-growing region of the Combe de Savoy valley, including the wine-making village of Chignin, with remains of the 8th century Sarasin stronghold and its 6 towers. The Isère River guides the route to Grésy-sur-Isère, a largely agricultural community which has been inhabited by man since the Neolithic age. Overnight in Sainte‐Hélène‐sur‐Isère

Day 5: Sainte‐Hélène‐sur‐Isère – Annecy (35 miles/57 km, 1050 ft/320 m of climbing) On your bikes you wind your way to Grésy-sur-Isère by way of Albertville, situated on the Arly River, close to the confluence with the Isere River. Albertville hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics and has become quite an industrial center, but it also encompasses the medieval town of Conflans, with buildings dating back to the 14th century.

The Beaufortain and Bauges Mountain ranges will dazzle you as you cycle to the stunning Lake Annecy (Lac d’Annecy). Known as Europe’s cleanest lake, its amazing setting is presided over by the Aravis mountain range in the background, famous for the hairpin turns and steep bends popularized on the Tour de France.

The magnificent town of Annecy, nestled on the northern tip of Lake Annecy, is home to the International Animated Film Festival and boasts an alluring alpine atmosphere, as well as some notable sites, such as the Palais de l’Isle (12th century prison on an island in a canal and the symbol of the town), the Château d’Annecy, the 16th century Cathedral of Saint-Pierre, and the 20th century Pont des Amour (Lover’s Bridge) made of iron. Overnight in Annecy

Day 6: Departure Have a relaxing breakfast, enjoy more of the sights and sounds and ambiance of Annecy, and depart at your leisure. Or, feel free to prolong the vacation and stay longer in Annecy in order to make the most of this extraordinary town and setting.

How to get there

Tour start Nearest airport and train station: Geneva (GVA), Switzerland

Getting from the airport to the city is easy, and free. From baggage area, look for the Rail Tickets machine and print one. This ticket will give you 80 minutes of free access on Geneva's public transportation system, called TPG.

Once you have your luggage and your Unireso ticket, and you've cleared Customs, head to your left through the Arrivals Hall. Just outside the exit, you'll find an entrance to the Gare CFF Aéroport. Head inside and down to the lower level. Check when the next train to Geneva city center (Gare Cornavin) departs and on which platform. The ride to Cornavin is only 6-7 minutes.

Alternatively, you may use your Unireso ticket for the bus. You will take bus #5, #10, and F to reach Gare Cornavin. For late night arrivals we recommend taking a taxi (about 30-40 CHF).

Once you reach Gare Cornavin, you can walk or take a tram, bus, or taxi to your first hotel.

Bikes, boats, ziplines, and paragliding —all in 4 days

My 19 year old granddaughter and I (60) spent four glorious days on this trail. We are not cyclists, although we are in shape and it is was perfect. We were just tired enough at the end of each day to enjoy a good meal and a good bottle of wine. We chose many side excursions along the way and found ourselves zip-lining over waterfalls, electric boating on a lake surrounded by the alps, and then paragliding tandem with an instructor over mountains and even a glacier! This was my second cycling trip and my granddaughters first. I will be adding a cycling portion to all my trips in the future. Nothing compares to exploring a country through villages and countryside. If you do this trip, or any cycling trip, always always always refer to Google maps and find the hidden gems along the way!

Simply Magical!!

It's difficult to find words to adequately describe this bike tour… 'Magical' is the one that comes the closest! We found breathtaking beauty and so much history at every turn on our trip. We couldn’t believe that each day could bring more wonderment than the last. We had to pinch ourselves on a regular basis to make sure we weren’t dreaming. The route was stunningly beautiful with distances of 30-50 miles per day. We upgraded our accommodations on day 3 to A+ and spent the night at Château de la Tour du Puits and would definitely recommend spending the extra money to do this! We would also recommend staying a few extra days in Annecy at the end of the tour. It is a beautiful city and there is much to experience and explore. The tour staff was very helpful and responsive whenever we had questions and communicated with our group via WhatsApp. Our group of 4 rented 2 gravel bikes and 2 ebikes. This was a great combination for us that allowed our group to keep the same pace. We are already brainstorming our next European bike tour!

It was an amazing vacation. The route was charming, beautiful and somehow more spectacular every day. We had great weather which made for great photos! It was a special way to explore France and love it even more.

Best trip ever!

This was a perfect trip! The scenery was amazing, the weather perfect, and the length of the daily rides was very doable. The entire trip was made easier because of how well it was organized. I love the self guided, without the hassle of moving our bags from place to place. Annecy is a wonderful city, so I recommend spending extra time there. We returned to Geneva by bus which went very smoothly. I recommend doing the A+ hotels, you won't want to miss the Chateau; it was a treat. It's beautiful, the staff was incredibly friendly and the food was delicious.

Wonderful way to bike through this Lake country of France from Geneva.

Loved the choices of sport versus moderate rides on several days, which satisfied all participants. As a single participant, the last hotel was disappointing, but satisfactory . Most accommodations were quite nice.

Nice ride. Two complaints.

1) The phone app didn't work at all (for three of us who tried). And the GPS they gave us as a backup is a decade outdated. Thank goodness for Google Maps, though that didn't always yield the most scenic routes. 2) Too much time spent on bike routes that were really highway shoulders, with a bicycle silhouette stenciled on the asphalt.

Great hotels, fantastic food, (and priceless company we provided ourselves).

BikeTours.com staff reply from Kirsten August 4, 2022

Thank you for leaving this feedback. We are working with our local partner to improve the phone app and GPS for this tour. We are glad you still had a memorable time and hope to help you plan your next trip!

Perfect bike tour through stunning countryside

My husband and I completed this self-guided tour in June 2022. Everything about the trip was perfect. We went for the higher level accomadations and were very pleases, especially with the Chateau. Much of the trip is on bike paths which makes it more enjoyable. Luggage transferw were flawless and the e-bikes were terrific.

Amazing Cycling Adventure

This 4 day/5 night cycling trip was the highlight of our summer trip to Europe. The variety of beautiful scenery during each day's bike ride was amazing. We loved stopping mid-day on days 2 and 4 to swim in the gorgeous lakes we were cycling next to (also don't miss the small lake next to the hotel at the end of your ride on day 3.) We chose the A level accommodations and each was comfortable and quirky, with very friendly staff/hosts. And the local bike tour company (cyclomundo) did a very thorough job of reviewing maps, demonstrating the GPS, checking our bike fit, and answering questions on the first morning. Two recommendations, consider carrying a picnic lunch with you on your daily ride (baguette, cheese, fruit, chocolate) so you can stop and eat at any of the picturesque places along the route. Also, your final stop, the city of Annecy, is a gem! If time and budget allow, plan to stay an extra day or two.

Organized Adventure

Well organized trip down to the street. While normally I stay in design hotels, due to the nature of the trip and the remote locations, the team did a superb job in accommodating us. The Chateau was certainly the highlight.

Great Trip!

It was everything I thought it would be.. beautiful French countryside, vineyards, fields of sunflowers, quaint villages, beautiful scenery. The weather was hot and that made the 1st day more challenging than I think it would have been otherwise

too much is too much

This tour is quite lovely, but not at the level we expected. This is our 8th tour so we feel we get them by now. We like the unguided aspect, but they completely outsourced the work of actual directions to a machine. It is not an adequate substitution. The machine added at least 15 miles on the first day and was most frustrating. Please, give us actual directions AND MAPS. A silly little device is certainly helpful but should not be a substitute. And the distance and hills were definitely not Medium. This was proven out the first night by the guy who biked to the hotel (he likes extreme and he thought it was tough).

BikeTours.com staff reply from Lindsay Nash November 14, 2016

Hi! Thanks for your review. We're glad to hear that the tour was lovely despite the tour level not meeting your expectations. We're taking your review to our products team and to the local tour operator to re-assess the tour level. Thank you for sharing your experience and helping us to better advise other travelers in the future.

I wanted to follow up once more on your review after following up with the local tour operator. They've never received complaints about the GPS before, and they did provide maps, a profile, and a large marked map in the roadbook on your tour. Also, to clarify, the client you mentioned who said it was a tough route was doing the more challenging version of the tour, not the version you went on. I'm sorry if that was confusing.

Again, we apologize the tour level did not match your expectations, but we do state clearly in the Surface and Terrain details about the daily climbing.

Thank you again for sharing your experience.

Epic Road Rides

The inside guide to cycling Geneva: Q&A with Bruno Toutain

Cyclomundo cycling tours france and geneva

Here’s a question for you. Have you considered cycling from Geneva on your next cycling trip?

Geneva is one of those places that often gets overlooked as a cycling holiday destination in its own right. It’s somewhere cyclists often go – but only in order to get somewhere else – most commonly the Alps or into Switzerland.

That’s a big shame, because Geneva is a beautiful, small city and cycling in and around Geneva is excellent. There’s the well-known cycling route around Lake Geneva (aka the Tour du Lac Léman) for starters, but it’s also really easy to access famous cols like the Col de la Colombière, Col de Joux-Plane and the Col du Grand Colombier.

In this article, we catch up with Bruno Toutain, founder of well-known cycling holiday company Cyclomundo. He recently set up GenevaCycling to help cyclists in Geneva discover one of Europe’s most beautiful regions. From bike hire to logistics and cycling tours, GenevaCycling are the people to go to here (there’s more information on their services at the end of this article ).

Read on for Bruno’s views on the best Geneva cycling routes, climbs and coffee shops in the area!

1. What is cycling in Geneva like?

Geneva is located on the banks of Lake Geneva, with the French Alps to the east and the Jura mountains to the west. This makes it ideally situated to offering something to everyone in terms of cycling.

Over the past ten years the city itself has become a lot more bike-user friendly with more and more bike lanes being added (ever more so following measures taken by the local authorities to promote biking in Geneva during the Covid pandemic).

Cyclist cycling around Geneva and its lake

A starting point are the fantastic Geneva cycle lanes which skirt along the banks of the lake and, particularly to the northeast of Geneva, very quickly emerge into beautiful countryside and vineyards.

There’s also a fantastic ‘voie verte’ that links the centre of Geneva with Annemasse, located over the border in France. It’s used by thousands of ‘frontalier’ (border) commuters each day, who commute from France to work in Geneva each day – but it’s also the perfect way to get out into the Swiss and French countryside and the mountains beyond!

Switzerland has an unmatched network of bike routes which you can check out here .

There are also a number of cols close to Geneva and they often feature in the Tour de France. For example, the Col de la Colombière, Col de Joux-Plane and the Col du Grand Colombier. Top tip – don’t miss the Col de la Faucille on the Jura side of Geneva, which has amazing views back across the Lake and over to the Mont Blanc massif. The climb up the Mont Salève (Geneva’s balcony) is also fantastic for this!

2. What’s the riding like around Geneva?

There is really something for everyone.

Easy riding from Geneva

There are a number of fantastic short loops that follow the banks of Lake Geneva and take you through the magnificent surrounding countryside and vineyards.

In terms of weekend/multi-day trips, our recommendation for a leisurely ride would be following the banks of Lake Geneva from Geneva to Nyon through the beautiful small port towns. From Nyon you can get the boat across to Yvoire, a spectacular medieval town, known as the “perle du Léman”. It is definitely worth taking a day to ride a loop around Yvoire to take in the surrounding scenery and other charming villages nearby. You can then ride back into Geneva from Yvoire following the shores of the Lake.

View across Lake Geneva to the Alps

More serious riding from Geneva

For more avid riders keen to spend a weekend ticking off some famous French cols, we can recommend riding out to Seyssel from Geneva, climbing the Col de Richemond and Col de la Biche along the way. You can then ride a loop ride from Seyssel taking in the Col du Grand Colombier. Finally you can ride up the Col de Semnoz and roll into the beautiful city of Annecy from where you can get the train back to Geneva.

If you want more of a challenge in Switzerland, then why not take the train out to Lausanne and ride to Villars. From Villars you can ride a nice loop ride and then head to Vevey via the town of Gruyères, famous for its eponymous cheese. You can easily get back to Geneva by train from Vevey.

Public transport in Geneva/Switzerland

As you’ll have clocked from the above, a huge benefit of cycling in Switzerland and basing yourself in Geneva, is that you can make use of Switzerland’s fantastic public transport. It’s very well geared towards cyclists – you can take your bike on trains and on the ferries which cross Lake Geneva, which makes it very easy to access slightly more remote places or cover longer distances.

3. What’s the most famous cycling route around Geneva?

Tour du lac/cycling around lake geneva.

The classic ride for most local club members is the “Tour du Lac”, which you can ride in a one day, 180km loop of Lake Geneva . There is also a sportive event following this loop: the Cyclotour du Léman.

It’s a great route which takes in some beautiful scenery along the way and passes through charming, small port towns such as Nyon and Rolle as well as the larger metropolis of Lausanne and the musical town of Montreux.

Crossing into France once you round the eastern-most point of the lake the route can sometimes be a bit traffic-heavy which is the only downside.

Be sure not to miss the beautiful medieval town of Yvoire either, known as the “perle du Léman”, as you make the final turn and point your wheels back to Geneva.

View across vineyards and Lake Geneva

Route des Grandes Alpes (Geneva to Nice cycle route)

If you are looking for something a bit longer, then starting from Geneva you can ride the classic Route des Grandes Alpes (Geneva to Nice).

Alternatively, for an easier, flatter route then check out the Via Rhôna which follows the Rhône river all the way to Avignon via Lyon!

4. What’s your favourite cycling around Geneva – and why?

As I live just outside Geneva, on the way up to the Salève, I sometimes ride up the “Croisette” (the toughest way up the Salève) and then ride down to Gaillard where our office is located via Monnetier. The loop is relatively short and the views are magnificent. On hot days, it feels great to breathe some “fresher” air!

You can find the GPX route for the Salève loop, here .

In the winter, as with most riders, I tend to ride fairly close to the lake.  One ride that I like (which we often do in the winter with my club) takes you along the lake via nice Swiss and French villages (Hermance, Chens, Yvoire, before riding back to Switzerland on country roads through farmlands and vineyards).  The views over the lakes and the Jura mountains are stunning and it is usually not as cold as riding inland.

You can find the GPX route for the Yvoire lake loop, here  and below:

5. What are the best cycling climbs in the Geneva area?

The most popular climbs amongst local riders are Col de Cou, Col du Feu, and Col de Saxel.  All are located in the Chablais area (the Chablais are the mountains right by the lake).  As they haven’t been very featured in international races, they are less well-known… but entirely worth it.

Here’s a GPX for a 90-km ride that will take you to Col de Cou and Col du Perret, another lesser-known climb.  It is a ride we do early in the season before tackling tougher passes.

This classic ride that takes riders up to Col de la Faucille is also a must-do. This GPX might be useful – it’s also below:

6. What are your best tips for people cycling in Geneva for the first time?

One of the best tips to offer is that in and around Geneva, or in Switzerland in general, you really can make the most of the bike friendly public transport system. You don’t need to worry so much about bonking as chances are you aren’t far from a train station and you can use the trains to your advantage to do longer out and backs or reach remote areas.

That being said, watch out for trams in the city centre – you don’t want to get in the way of one of them!

When cycling along the western shore of Lake Geneva, shortly after leaving the city, take the time to climb slightly higher above the Lake, through villages such as Genthod, to enjoy incredible views back over the Lake and across to Mont Blanc. To this end, the higher you go the better the view and this is certainly true of the spectacular panorama riding up (or down) the col de la Faucille!

A great way to ride with the locals is to join a club ride. I ride with a friendly club – http://www.cyclo-chenois.ch/ and they will be more than happy to show off their favourite routes! If you are keen to join an easy 25km evening ride then check out these rides we run from late spring to early autumn, here .

Of course, we at Geneva Cycling would also be delighted to show you around! There’s lots of info on our tours here .

7. What are Geneva’s bike shops and bike hire facilities like?

Bike shops in geneva.

There are a huge number of bike shops in Geneva and all of the major brands are represented.

The fact that there are so many bicycle shops in Geneva city centre means that, generally, they tend to specialise in a type of riding: road bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes, urban bikes, folding bikes, cargo bikes and mountain bikes.

Bike hire in Geneva

Electric bikes are increasingly popular in Geneva (some can cruise at 45kph and even require number plates and a driving licence!) and so it can occasionally be tricky to rent bikes in Geneva that are not electric!

Fortunately we offer a large fleet of bikes to hire (from road bike rental to gravel, electric and hybrid bikes). You can take a more detailed look on our website here . Location depending, we can even deliver them directly to your accommodation.

8. Are there any really good cafés that cyclists ought to visit in/around Geneva?

Generally each club/group has its own post-ride café spot for a coffee after a ride! A few cycling themed bars and cafés which are well worth a visit are Café Guidoline and La Petite Reine.

The restaurant/bar “Le Reposoir” is right on the lake and has become a well-known stop for cyclists who ride around Lac Geneva/Léman. It’s very welcoming to cyclists (they even stock spare inner tubes just in case!). The owner, a former BMX Champion, has created a beer called Vélosophe that is marketed as “la véritable cyclist beer”!

And finally, Geneva is quite unique in that it boasts a velodrome! It is possible to visit and even to have a go on the track – you can book in advance here . If you are lucky enough to be visiting during the “3 Days” competition then there will be a great atmosphere in which to enjoy drinks or dinner.

View of Lake Geneva

9. What’s the best area of Geneva for cyclists to stay in?

Geneva is blessed with being large enough to be a major city but small enough to easily escape by bike. In general most areas of the city have easy access to bike paths leading to the lake and out into the surrounding countryside. The liveliest neighbourhoods in the centre are “Le Paquis” and “Les Grottes” which have the most choice in terms of restaurants and bars.

10. What’s the best time of year to visit – and why?

The best time of year to visit Geneva is from June through October (particularly if you want to tick off some cols!).

Experience has taught us that the latter part of August and September are often absolutely perfect conditions for riding

Bruno Toutain

I set up Cyclomundo in 2003, building it around my philosophy that cycling is at the centre of an environment-friendly, green-minded universe which brings people closer and opens up ways to have fun, enjoy life, and explore the world.

Cycling has been my passion ever since I was a child. I enjoy all types of cycling, whether it be commuting from my home on the Salève mountain or racing sportive events with friends (l’Etape du Tour or the Alpe Open tour).

Cycling is not only my favourite sport but also my favourite way to travel and I love to explore, spending a lot of time scouting trips on all types of surfaces, using a wide range of bikes: road, gravel, bikeways, and canal paths.

GenevaCycling is my latest brainchild.  It’s a project to offer bike tours from Geneva, as well as individual services like bike hire, logistics and support. The project has been on the back-burner for the last few years but this year’s slower pace has given me a chance to put it together. I’m really excited to be offering these services and help people discover Geneva’s amazing cycling opportunities!

Want to know more about Geneva Cycling?

Geneva Cycling  is the local division of  Cyclomundo , a small, locally run company that offers bike trips in France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, and Portugal. In addition to our bike trips, we also arrange rental services, logistical support, and can offer local expertise for groups of cyclists in and around the Greater Geneva/French Alps area. Our solutions range from self-guided trips and expertly guided tours, to individual services such as luggage transfers, bike rentals, mechanic services or support vehicles.

Established in 2004, the small team of passionate cyclists at Cyclomundo have poured all their experience and regional knowledge into this new local division. The tours in the Greater Geneva/French Alps area take place on the roads we are lucky enough to call our ‘playground’, given their proximity to our office in Gaillard (just outside Geneva). Simply put, they are the roads we know best in Switzerland and France, two of the best cycling countries in the world.

As strong believers in sustainable development, we rely on using a network of local guides and suppliers.  We favour family-run and locally managed enterprises which are run by people who have a passion for their region and its cultural, gastronomic, and historical heritage. We go out of our way to find these places for you because these are the types of experiences we would want for ourselves!

Cycling ViaRhôna - From Geneva to Lyon

You will cycle through a hilly area, you will encounter regularly inclinesr and sometimes a tough climb where you get off. It is also possible that the daily distances are sometimes a bit longer. Some cycling experience uphill is desirable, even when cycling with an e-bike. The daily distance span from 30 to 75 km.

The terrain is slightly hilly. You will encounter a short incline from time to time or maybe one or two heavy stages. With an e-bike and some cycling experience you should easily be able to handle this level. Daily distances span 50-75 km.

Riverside

Level 1 Easy Our easiest trips. Well suited for beginners, seniors and families, who are looking for a relaxed cycling event. Flat routes with sometimes a gentle slope. Short distances; not more than 35 km/21 miles per day. There’s still enough time ‘to smell the flowers’. Often trips along rivers and seashores like the Loire river or the Atlantic Coast. Level 2 Easy to moderate These trips, for the ones who are cycling now and then, are a bit more challenging. Still these cycle adventures remain relaxed holidays. The steep slopes are short, while the longer slopes are not so steep. The landscape varies from flat land to gently hills. The distances, which are not more than 50 km/31 mi, make the cycling days a bit longer. Level 3 Moderate These are trips for more sportive people who are cycling regularly and having a good condition. The slopes are longer and steeper, the daily distances mostly between 50 km/31 miles and 65 km/40 miles. There are more challenging days during these holidays. Often these trips are taken place in the more hilly and a bit mountainous regions.. Level 4 Moderate to streneous  For those who want to search for their cycling limits and have a splendid condition. Some big climbs, long and demanding distances (mainly more than 65 km/40 miles) makes those trips a challenging event.  Those cycle adventures are taken place in the more mountainous regions of France. Level 5 Streneous These challenging adventures are only for the experienced cyclists who have done those kinds of longer and strenuous trips before. The combination of long daily distances with regularly steep climbs are making these challenges great for the ‘tough few’.

Take the time to discover this beautiful Swiss city, known as the "capital of peace" with its humanitarian traditions, it will seduce you with its international charm and its old town offering a wide choice of delicious restaurants. Enjoy a pleasant stroll along banks of Lake Geneva.

Your first bike ride takes you from Switzerland to France along the Rhone, you will discover the "Défilé de l'Écluse" and then the first vineyards between mountains and valleys, while keeping in view the sumptuous mountains of the Alps. This part of the trip will be on busier roads, but the rest of the week it will be much quieter. You will spend the night in the charming little town of Seyssel, on the banks of the river.

You also have the possibility to take the train to Seyssel and start your bike trip the day after if you want to avoid this first stage with busy roads!

Challenge: 59.9km, 677m ascent, 804m descent

Leave Seyssel and cycle between ridges and plateau on both banks of the Rhone. Arrival in Chanaz, also called "La Petite Venise Savoyarde", enjoy a pleasant break in one of the charming restaurants along the canal of Savières. Continue on towards Culoz and Belley, peaceful small towns with a rich heritage that punctuate the Bugey mountain range. Continue your journey, through beautiful natural surroundings to arrive in the region of Champagneux.

A lovely greenway links "La Vallée Bleue" to Villebois, which is where you’ll stay overnight.

Challenge: 66.3km, 628m ascent, 635m descent

This ViaRhôna stage takes you through the unspoilt countryside of Burgey above the Rhône. You pass lovely villages this morning : Saint-Sorlin-en-Bugey and Sault-Brénaz, and the more secretive La Balme-les-Grottes, with its great caves and picturesque centre. Your destination will soon be in sight as you approach the hilltop medieval village of Pérouges, labeled one of the most beautiful villages in France.

Challenge: 55.4km, 444m ascent, 418m descent

This last cycle day cleverly links the parks and lakes of Greater Lyon, including Le Grand Large and Miribel-Jonage. Enjoy the magnificent cycle route through central Lyon, along the Rhône’s banks. At the Rhône’s confluence with the Saône, you come to a brand-new quarter marked by contemporary architecture, the most striking building being the Musée des Confluences. Your options for the rest of the day are endless but you can also reward yourselves with a delicious meal in a "petit bouchon", typical restaurant in the city.

Challenge: 45.9km, 266m ascent, 368m descent

End of your trip after breakfast. We advise you to extend your stay in order to take the time to visit the beautiful city of Lyon.

If you don’t bring your own, you can rent a bicycle (hybrid or ebike) from us. You will find your rental bikes waiting for you at your first hotel. The hotel reception staff will give you the keys for your bikes and direct you to the bicycle shed. All bikes are provided with chain locks.  The frame and saddle height are set to your height, although you might want to adjust your saddle to be in the most comfortable position. We also recommend doing a first small test drive of couple of hundred meters to be comfortable with gears, brakes etc. If you have an issue with your bike, you can contact the service provider (name of bike rental in your reservation) directly. Or you can always call us on our emergency phone number.   Our hybrid touring bikes are at least 21-speed gear. You can find all the information regarding our rental bikes below. Experience the advantages of an electric bike on your cycling holiday, particularly when there's a significant gap in ability and experience among cyclists. An e-bike provides a gentle boost up hills, allowing you to easily keep pace with your companions. With a small electric motor and battery, e-bikes make bike trips more achievable, and their batteries can be conveniently charged at hotels. While you still need to pedal, the e-bike significantly reduces the effort required. Familiarity with e-bikes is advised due to their quicker acceleration and heavier build compared to regular bikes, attributed to the electric motor.

We had a great time, people were nice, drivers were respectful, weather was mostly good.

The tartiflette we had in Seyssel was amazing, and we did go swimming in the river before Perouges.

The accommodation in Champagneux was very pleasant (thanks to the amazing host), thought the town itself wasn’t. We also liked the town of Chanaz, which we passed on one of the days. We found it as a pleasant surprise that the elevation estimates on the website was not accurate. I think almost every day was just half of the elevation, which was very nice. And the tartiflette we had in Seyssel was amazing, and we did go swimming in the river before Perouges.

We had a wonderful 5 days of biking with FBT. The attention to detail from the time we made our first inquiries until the end of the trip was top notch. We asked to modify our tour from their standard tour and those changes were readily accommodated. The bike delivery/pick-up were smooth as well as all the luggage transfers. I highly recommend FBT !

Lake Geneva zipline park is voted one of the best aerial adventure parks in the country

geneva bike tour

Just in time for summer vacation planning, USA TODAY published several rankings of best adventure tours across the country, including categories like best bike tour , best helicopter tour , best white water rafting tour and best hot air balloon ride .

Wisconsin made an appearance on the list, with Lake Geneva Ziplines & Adventures named fourth-best aerial adventure park.

The park, at N3232 County Road H in Lake Geneva, has nine ziplines that span the trees of its 100-acre property. The full tour includes a dual racing line, five skybridges, four spiral staircases and takes participants about 2.5 hours to complete. There's also a shorter tour available, which uses four of the ziplines. Additional "up-in-the-air" adventures include a high ropes course and a climbing tower, and there also are hiking and biking trails.

Each week, a panel of industry experts nominates their favorite attractions in a wide variety of categories for the USA TODAY 10Best Readers' Choice Awards . From there, 10Best editors choose nominations to go before readers, who have four weeks to vote for their favorites.

ViaRhôna from Geneva to Lyon in 6 Days

Tour length: 5 nights/6 days

Fitness Level:

challenge_2halfbikes

The “ViaRhôna” project is a bicycle path connecting Lake Geneva to France’s Mediterranean beaches . The project is still a work in progress in some areas (south of Lyon for instance), but is completed between Geneva and Lyon.

As the route is mostly traffic-free, it is a great way to experience France’s countryside without the stress of busy roads, an ideal set up for families or novice riders who wish to try bike touring.

On our tour, we stray away from the ViaRhôna to experience the medieval village of Pérouges, which involves a short section with some traffic (fairly light)

The ViaRhôna from Geneva to Lyon is ideal for riders of all fitness levels. As the route can be broken down in different ways, let us know more about your party and we’ll be able to personalize your itinerary to suit you best.

Cyclists riding a variety of types of bikes

Trip begins in Geneva and ends in Lyon . Geneva is well-served by train and by air.

Self-guided tour available May through October 2022 . Starts any day of the week . For groups of 4 or more : Any weekday (except Fridays)

Daily cycling distance ranges from 43 to 88 km . This trip is highly customizable to meet your needs!

Accommodation in 2- and 3-star properties .

Starting at 830 euros per person sharing a double room.

Geneva is easily accessible by car, train , and air. You’ll arrive in a cultural, cosmopolitan city with more than enough attractions to fill a day, so you can check in to your hotel in the heart of the city and then head on out to explore

We’ll meet you at your hotel for a briefing of the next few days’ itinerary. We’ll also provide you with all the necessary navigation tools (marked maps, GPS pre-loaded with the itinerary) and bikes if you’ve chosen not to bring your own. Today’s route winds its way southwest, across the Swiss border into France where you will spend the remainder of your tour. There are plenty of reasons to stop along the way: stunning panoramas, striking rock formations, and intriguing ruins, to name a few. Your hotel in Seyssel sits right on the river, providing the perfect spot to give your biking legs a rest.

The Rhône river will take you to the small village of Chanaz, an ideal coffee stop along the way. If you feel like exploring Lac du Bourget, a few extra miles will allow you to edge along France’s biggest natural lake.  Save some energy for the climb up to your hotel in Champagneux. Your day will end with a fabulous dinner.

The Rhône River will show you the way through small villages and quiet countryside…From Saint-Sorlin, you’ll leave the ViaRhona and ride on secondary roads to the hilltop medieval village of Pérouges. You’re bound to experience a memorable time there (and dinner!).

On your final ride you can choose to follow the ViaRhona or you may opt for a longer ride through the countryside. Either way, you’ll reach Lyon in a traffic-free way before your final climb to La Croix Rousse where your hotel is located. The climb is worth it… Besides the view, you’ll get to experience a lively part of Lyon.

After breakfast in Lyon, depart at the time of your choice.

Things To Do Travel

In northeast ohio, you don’t need to go far to experience something miles beyond, the buckeye state offers topnotch museums, island getaways, wineries and much more.

A zipline at sunset takes riders along the lake and through Geneva State Park for sunset views in Geneva-on-the-Lake via Lake Erie Canopy Tours. The Kids Adventure Tour has many of the same challenges as the zipline, but they’re closer to the ground. (Courtesy of The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake)

Possibilities abound in the serendipitous season of summer, with the closeness of everything an advantage when reality gives only a short break from the everyday. The totality of the beauty of Lake Erie sunsets, the parks with their trees and wineries and outdoor concerts on lawns and town squares is hard to match anywhere.

Discover that you don’t need to fly away to become engaged in your surroundings. Plan a day trip, a weekend or even longer to relax and get to know more about the close-by beyond.

Geneva-on-the-Lake

Walk the strip to take in old-time attractions like Skee-Ball, eat cotton candy and hot dogs, hit the beach, play at the oldest mini golf course in the country and take a spin in a go-kart. See the sunset from a zipline or challenge the kids to a pint-sized canopy tour. It all started with friends and automobile pioneers Henry Ford, John D. Rockefeller and Harvey Firestone, who enjoyed camping there more than a century ago. Their inventions made it possible to get away by car for weekends in the fresh lake breezes. And their descendants still come. Rental cottages and bed and breakfasts abound. Details: visitgenevaonthelake.com and lakeeriecanopytours.com .

With the country’s only municipal sugarbush on its town square, this is where to learn about the production of maple syrup from its earliest days to the present time. Maple sap, which is boiled into syrup, is gathered in the winter, but there’s someone on hand to talk about the process all year round.
