Balearia Caribbean has offices in Fort Lauderdale (Fll, United States) and in the Bahamas on the island of Bimini and in Freeport, in Grand Bahama island. From these offices and ports the Balearia boat departs, they are the boarding point and you can buy ferry tickets directly too.

The Fort Lauderdale offices, in Port Everglades, are where passengers embark to Bimini and Grand Bahama (Bahamas). As a general rule, boarding takes place at Terminal 21, although it is always good to make sure that there has not been a last minute change in the departure terminal. Balearia is working on being granted its own terminal in the port of Port Everglades..

In Bimini, the Balearia office is located in a yellow house in Fisher Village, less than a 5-minute walk from the Hilton Hotel. The boarding pier is also a 5-minute walk away. From the office there is a free transfer that leaves you at the ferry door before boarding.

Balearia Caribbean's ferry ticket are not transferable. The name of the passenger cannot be modified in any case.

Those reservations whose cancellation is requested seven days before the ferry departure date, are entitled to a full refund.

If the reservation cancellation request is made between 7 and 4 days before the ferry departure date, the cancellation penalty will be 50%.

Those reservation cancellations requested three days or less before the ferry departure date will not be refunded.

Date changes : Date changes are allowed if they are requested at least 24 hours before the ferry departure date. A fare difference and a US$75 penalty will be applied for each change.

Special Offers and One day Trips: No refund will be applied for cancellations of special offers and one-day trips.

Any passenger who does not board the ferry for any reason, beyond the control of Balearia Caribbean, will not be entitled to a refund or date change under any circumstances.

Balearia Caribbean does not assume any responsibility other than the refund of the ticket, in case it has to refund it, if the ferry trip for which the ticket has been issued does not make the stipulated trip due to operational difficulties, weather conditions, unforeseen circumstances or forces beyond Balearia Caribbean's control.

New requirements effective on June 19th, 2022 .

June 17th, 2022: ALL passengers will NO LONGER need a Bahamas Health Visa starting on June 19th, 2022

Every passenger that is fully vaccinated WILL NO LONGER NEED A TEST .

All unvaccinated travelers ages 2 and older will be required to obtain either a negative RT-PCR test or a Rapid Antigen test— taken no more than three days (72 hours) prior to travel and present the negative test results at check-in before travel to The Bahamas.

Passengers will be required to bring Covid test result, proof of vaccinations (original card) on travel day. This is a mandatory request by The Bahamas government. The embarkation may be denied due to failure of facilitating the proper travel documents.

Children under the age of 2 are exempt from testing requirements.

* Currently, no Covid test or vaccination is required to enter Florida when traveling by ferry.

May 31, 2022: LATEST UPDATE from the Bahamian authorities regarding passengers traveling to the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale (both Bimini and Grand Bahama) on the day trip. Although those passengers who come to the Bahamas for one day trip do not need to present the Health Visa upon arrival at the port of the Bahamas, it is mandatory that they present a negative result of a rapid antigen test upon arrival.

All other passengers who spend at least one night in the Bahamas must present the Health Visa upon arrival in the country.

The government of the Bahamas has modified the requirements for entry into the Bahamas islands and travel between certain islands in the Bahamas in order to provide a safe and healthy island experience for all travelers visiting the Bahamas to safely enjoy the islands.

This new regulation is aimed at all people who apply for a Health Visa to travel to the Bahamas or travel between islands within the Bahamas as of next Friday, August 6, 2021.

From this date to:

Entering the Bahamas from other countries:

All fully vaccinated travelers, as well as children ages 2 to 11, will need to obtain a negative COVID-19 test (either a rapid antigen test or a PCR test) taken no more than five (5) days prior to departure/arrival date to the Bahamas.

Unvaccinated travelers 12 years of age and older must obtain a negative COVID-19 PCR test taken no more than 5 days prior to arrival.

All children under the age of 2 are exempt from any testing requirements.

If you want to travel between islands within the Bahamas from the following islands:

Nassau and Paradise Island, Grand Bahama (Freeport), Bimini (Alice Town), Exuma, Abaco, and North and South Eleuthera, including Harbor Island.

Requeriments for Cruise Passengers.

Guests on cruises originating in and returning to the Bahamas must apply for a Bahamas Travel Health Visa and follow the new testing requirements for vaccinated and unvaccinated persons.

Balearia Caribbean will relaunch its ferry service from Florida to the Bahamas on Febraury 2021, departing from Fort Lauderdale port. The South Florida-based company runs ferry services from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini first and from Port Everglades to Freeport (Grand Bahama island).

The company announced last week that the Government of the Bahamas has approved the launch of the fast ferry service between Miami (Fort Lauderdale) and Grand Bahama (Freeport) in the Bahamas. His first departure to Freeport is scheduled for February 11, 2021.

Balearia will be offering initially one sailing service a week, with ferry on Thurdays. At the end of Febraury, another ferry service will be implemented on Sundays. If there is an increase in demand for passenger transport, the shipping company is prepared to increase the number of weekly departures in March and April.

The government of the Bahamas has announced that it will open its borders to the transport of passengers by ferrys of February 10, 2021 to Bimini island and on February 11, 2021 to Freeport Harbour (Gran Bahama island).

For that, Balearia Caribbean is preparing the safety and hygiene protocols (in its ships and passenger terminals) necessary to offer its customers safe transport, both for people and goods.

The ferry route to Freeport, Grand Bahama, will be opertate once a week (Thurdays) and, if possible, it will be two days a week in February. If passenger demand increases, and sanitary conditions allow it, the frequency on the ferry routes will be increased in March and April 2021.

As a GENERAL RULE, all travelers who want to visit the Bahamas should apply for a Bahamas Health Travel Visa. This visa can be obtained through the website travel.gov.bs . VACCINATED PASSENGERS

At the time of boarding in Fort Lauderdale (Florida) and entering the country, passengers must present printed copies of the negative result of COVID 19 and of the Travel Health approved on the day of the trip. Pre departure & Arrival:

Baggage policy and ferry fares to Bahamas with Balearia Caribbean. As a courtesy to all the passengers, each adult can bring only ONE carry-on item on board at no charge. The courtesy bag must weigh a maximum of 26.5 LBS or less, with maximum dimensions of 22 ”x18” x10 ”.

All passengers traveling with infants / children will be allowed one additional piece of luggage (26.5 LBS or less, with maximum dimensions of 22 ”x18” x10 ”) free of charge.

Rate: Bags that exceed 26.5 LBS or the excess of a courtesy bag will be subject to a charge of $ 25.00 (USD) per bag, one way.

Oversized bags or large items such as bicycles, kayaks, diving equipment, etc., will be subject to a charge of $ 50.00 (USD) per item, one way.

The Balearia Caribbean confirmation system gave my boyfriend Javier and I different terminals to board. While my boyfriend was told to go to terminal 21, I received a notice to show up at terminal 19. All this, as you can imagine, is very confusing and we lost a lot of time to find the correct terminal."

The Bimini Fast Ferry has a capacity of 600 passengers and features both economy and business premium seating.  The Bimini Ferry sails from the Port Everglades on Fridays, Sundays & Wednesdays most months (see full schedule below). The Bimini Fast Ferry offers one-way service, day trips (over and back same day) or split dates (depart one day and return another). Only personal belongings are considered to be luggage. *Each passenger may take one carry on piece of luggage free of charge. The carry on item must be no larger than 22" x 18" x 10" and weigh no more than 25 lbs. Items exceeding these dimensions or if you have additional luggage an additional charge of $25.00 per piece will apply. Any additional luggage fees must be paid at the port at the time of departure. 

Passengers with cargo items (large items that that do not fit in a suitcase, such as dive equipment, bicycles, etc.) must drop these items off at the warehouse the day before your sailing. Please be mindful of the days the warehouse will load your items onboard before you book your sailing. 

ALL items, baggage, etc must be labeled with the passenger’s full name and address. Unclaimed baggage with be held for 10 days at owner’s risk and expense and will be discarded after that period of time.

**Rates may be higher during peak season periods, based on availability, class of seating and other factors. Port taxes, Bahamas departure fees and service fees will be added to your final rate before check-out.

Great service, fast and fun

The cruise ship let and arrived when it was supposed to. Shuttled you to the hotel and it’s easy to get pretty much anywhere on the island from there. The boat had comfortable inside seats with windows and also an outdoor deck area. They sell food/booze. Pricey but what can you do. It was super rough on our way out but can’t control Mother Nature. It was still fun. Smooth on the way home. Will def use this service again!

Amazing Trip - LOVE Bimini!

We left on Dec 24th - and this is the only way to go! From check in at the Port of Miami - which was quick & easy - to hopping on the ferry and the great crew that took care of us - to the arrival in Bimini (we highly recommend arranging for a golf cart while on the ferry over) - to the incredible week visit we had & our return home - it couldn't have been better! We were there over the Christmas holiday. We both were concerned about getting sea sick so we planned ahead and started with our Dramamine the day prior. We heard that folks were ill because the water was rough due to the weather & wind - but we didn't have any issue. We did the same on the way back. Better to be prepared than not! And certainly the crew can't help the weather! So prepare yourself! The ferry ride there & back was really great. The return one being so dark out- wasn't much to see - but everything was seamless. We will never fly again when we can go this route. It was less stressful - more fun and we thoroughly enjoyed it!

I paid $200 for a 2-hour ferry ride from Florida to the Bahamas. I spent 9 hours there, and it wasn't enough time.

• I went on a two-hour ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to the Bahamas for $200.
• The ferry's boarding process was easy, and I enjoyed walking around North Bimini island.
• I wish I'd been able to spend more time on the island, and getting home wasn't perfect.

There are a lot of different ways you can spend $200 in a day in Miami .

A brunch with friends on South Beach could easily amount to this price if you aren't careful, and many excursions around the city could cost this much once you factor in parking and gratuity.

But this spring, I switched up my routine and used $200 to take a solo day trip from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to Bimini, a small island chain in the Bahamas roughly 50 miles east of Miami.

It cost me about $200 for the round-trip ferry ride.

I purchased a two-hour ferry ride with Baleària Carribean for a Wednesday. My round-trip ferry ride from Fort Lauderdale to Bimini cost a little more than $200 thanks to a spring-break promotion. Prices are usually around $225.

Prices can vary by time of year and airline, but a 45-minute flight from South Florida to Bimini usually costs $50 to $60 more than the ferry.

Flying would've been quicker, but I'd never taken a ferry from Miami to the Bahamas before despite living in Florida for nearly six years and I wanted the experience.

First, I drove to Port Everglades to board.

I left from Miami, and it took me nearly 40 minutes to drive to Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale from Dade City. The ship was set to depart at 9:00 a.m., and information I received from Baleària said we should arrive about two hours early. 

Around 7:00 a.m., I pulled into the Palm Parking Garage, which is right next to the terminal Baleària regularly uses. It cost me $15 to park for the day, which suited me because I was coming back that evening. 

I'd already printed my boarding pass and only had a small backpack, so check-in was easy.

Within 20 minutes, I'd shown my passport, passed through security and the ticket gate, and was ready to board. I was given a wristband, which I'd need to prove I was a day-trip passenger who was getting off at the ship's first stop before the vessel would head on to Freeport.

After an hour, the gates opened and people were able to board.

Once boarding started, I realized I was surrounded by people who'd done this before.

We didn't have assigned seats on the ferry, so the seats were first come, first served.

I'll take my peace of mind over a choice seat on a ship or plane any day, so I was one of the last people to board. Fortunately, the ferry was nowhere near capacity on this Wednesday trip, so I was still able to snag a window seat in a row all by myself.

Once I got myself situated, the concession-stand line was already long. While I was waiting, people around me were making comments about the voyage and how it compared to other ones, which made me think I was with people who regularly made this trip.

The ship left on time, and I didn't get my coffee and snack until 40 minutes later. I can only imagine how much longer everything would take if the ship were full.

The ride was rockier than I expected.

When I was 18, I sailed across the Irish Sea to Dublin from Wales and thought it was fine. Now, a decade later, I can definitely say I'm not immune to seasickness .

I'm not sure if the sea was rougher than normal, but I definitely felt the roll of each wave as we sailed to our stop in Bimini. It wasn't unmanageable — just uncomfortable. Stepping out onto the deck to watch the waves helped a little.

The ride took almost exactly two hours, and we docked in Bimini's harbor at 11:00 a.m.

Day-trip passengers were prioritized when we disembarked in Bimini.

When we made it to our stop in North Bimini, the ship crew made an announcement for Bimini day-trip passengers to begin disembarking first. I had to show the wristband I'd gotten back in Fort Lauderdale to get off.

Within five minutes, I was standing on the dock. A few minutes later, a tram came and picked us up to drive us to the island. Since we were the first ones off the boat, we didn't have to wait to get on.

I was only going to be in the Bahamas for the day , so I appreciated how Baleària was committed to maximizing my time on the island.

The area of the island I was in felt like it was really geared toward tourists.

When I first got off the boat, my group was immediately shuttled near the entrance to the Hilton at Resorts World Bimini. When we got off the shuttle, we were greeted by half a dozen people trying to convince us to spend $60 to rent golf carts. This is one of the most common ways tourists explore the island for the day.

Even though I was here to relax, I'm not comfortable visiting a country and only spending my time at a resort . So, before I headed to the Hilton, I decided to explore the island on foot.

The farther south I went, the fewer tourists I found.

It's only about 2 miles from the cruise port to Radio Beach, and I was one of the few people I saw walking that day.

The weather was warm and pleasant, and I saw lots of stores and shops I would have missed if I were zooming by on a golf cart. Locals and visitors on golf carts stopped me more than a dozen times asking if I wanted a ride, so I guess it's unusual to walk the length of the island.

I eventually made it to Radio Beach, which was quite empty.

Even though I was by myself, I felt incredibly safe and enjoyed my time alone.

When I finally made it to Radio Beach, I was the only one there, and the ocean views made the trek absolutely worth it . After sitting and enjoying my solitude for a while, I walked back to the Hilton.

I stopped at a hotel on the island and bought a pool pass.

When I was planning my trip in the days before arriving at North Bimini, most everything I read online said you could get a Bimini Beach Club day pass for $39.

However, I learned on the island that I could get a day pass to the Hilton's outdoor pool for about $15. Since I only had a few hours left on the island after lunch, I chose this option.

The pool area was clean, stylish, and nearly empty when I visited — just like the beach was.

Leaving the island didn't go as planned, but the process was still well-coordinated.

When it was finally time to leave, we had a minor hiccup: The ferry was coming back from Freeport and was delayed. Baleària communicated this with Hilton, and the hotel allowed me and other passengers to wait in the lobby until our shuttle arrived.

Instead of boarding from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., we arrived at the ferry a little past 7 p.m. The boarding felt a little rushed, but we still left on time to head back to Florida .

Getting off the boat back in Florida was the most stressful part of my trip.

After a long day of walking and traveling, I was ready to get back to Miami as quickly as possible. However, when the ferry docked just after 10:00 p.m., we were told we had to wait an additional half an hour until all luggage was off the ship before disembarking.

The ferry had two seating levels, and I was on the top one, so we had to wait for the passengers below to disembark before we could.

Once we were off the ferry, passengers with checked luggage collected their bags, and we passed through customs and immigration before I headed back to my car.

I'll definitely go back to the Bahamas, but probably not as a day trip.

Based on my short time on the island, I think North Bimini is a beautiful destination for resort-goers or solo travelers looking for some peace and quiet. I definitely want to go back to the Bahamas and visit another island, but I don't think I'll be doing a day trip again any time soon.

Baleària and Hilton made the experience as smooth and joyful as possible, but it's a long day. I'm glad I got to experience a piece of Bimini, but next time, I'd want to spend a little more time on the islands.

I f you’re planning a trip to the Bahamas, one of the first things you’ll need to sort out is your travel documentation. As a U.S. citizen, you generally need to have a valid passport book or passport card to enter the Bahamas by air or sea. While it’s close to the United States , it’s not part of the U.S. or a U.S. territory. As such, you’ll need to meet the same entry requirements as you would for any other foreign country.

What you should know before traveling to the Bahamas

There are some details to keep in mind when it comes to the required travel documents for entering the Bahamas.

Can you use your driver’s license to go to the Bahamas?

No, a driver’s license alone is not sufficient for entry into the Bahamas. Even though the Bahamas is a relatively short distance from the U.S., you’ll still need to present a valid U.S. passport book or passport card when arriving by air or sea.

Your driver’s license may be used as additional identification, but it cannot replace a passport for international travel to the Bahamas. The Bahamas Immigration authorities are strict about enforcing entry requirements, so it’s best to have proper documentation in order.

Can you go on a cruise without a passport?

National Hurricane Center tracks disturbance. Could it impact Florida Memorial Day weekend weather?

The National Hurricane Center is continuing to monitor a disturbance located southeast of Florida.

The system has a very low chance for development, and doesn't appear at this time to pose any threat to Florida.

The disturbance popped up in the National Hurricane Center's tropical outlook map the same day NOAA released its forecast for the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

Predictions from the National Hurricane Center , AccuWeather and Colorado State University all predict the season will be very active due to the combination of La Niña and extremely warm water temperatures. Both conditions favor the development of tropical cyclones.

The National Hurricane Center predicted 17 to 25 named storms this year, eight to 13 hurricanes and four to seven major hurricanes. An average season has 14 named storms.

The official start of hurricane season is June 1, although tropical storms and hurricanes have formed earlier. Most pre-season storms formed in May.

The first named storm for 2024 will be Alberto.

What is Memorial Day weekend forecast for Florida?

The three-day Memorial Day holiday weekend is expected to be hot and mostly dry across Florida. Many areas could see near-record high temperatures and a heat index ranging from 100 to 107.

Some areas could see some isolated storms Saturday. A cold front is expected to move into the Panhandle late Monday and reach Central Florida Tuesday. Don't expect temperatures to drop much. "It'll still feel like summer," said Brendan Schaper, meteorologist with the National Weather Service Melbourne.

What is out there and how likely is it to strengthen?

Tropical disturbance: A trough of low pressure is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms a few hundred miles to the northeast of the central Bahamas. An area of low pressure is expected to form within thissystem roughly halfway between Bermuda and Hispaniola later today.

Although environmental conditions are not conducive, some slight subtropical or tropical development is possible over the next couple of days while the system moves northeast.

• Formation chance through 48 hours: low, 10 percent.
• Formation chance through 7 days: low, 10 percent.

Will Florida be impacted by the tropical disturbance? 

At this time, it doesn't appear the disturbance will have any impact on Florida, Schaper said. The system's disorganized showers and thunderstorms are drifting northeast away from Florida.

Forecasters urge all residents to continue monitoring the tropics and to always be prepared.

That advice is particularly important for what is expected to be a very active hurricane season.

Memorial Day road trip ahead. Here are the best and worst times to go in Florida, the Southeast

Memorial Day is rapidly approaching, which means millions will be hitting the roadways or skies for a quick weekend getaway.

AAA projects 43.8 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Memorial Day holiday travel period. This is a 4% increase over last year, with experts noting this comes close to matching 2005’s record of 44 million Memorial Day travelers. 

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel, said. “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

Memorial Day is always observed on the last Monday of May, with this year's being on Monday, May 27. Memorial Day weekend starts on Friday, May 24, and lasts through the holiday until Monday.

Which will be more congested for Memorial Day travel — roadways or airports?

According to AAA, road trips are expected to set a record with 38.4 million people projected to travel by car over Memorial Day weekend. Drivers can expect similar gas prices as last year when the national average was roughly $3.57.

Renting a car for your road trip? Florida-based rental company  Hertz  says Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston and Las Vegas are the cities displaying the highest rental demand, with the busiest pick-up days projected to be Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24. 

But airports are also bracing for a large surge of travelers next weekend.

Is Memorial Day a busy airport day?

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year and 9% jump compared to 2019.

"This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post 9/11," AAA said in its press release.

As for other modes of transportation, AAA predicts nearly two million people are expected to travel by buses, cruises, and train.

“This category took the biggest hit during the pandemic with fewer people taking public transportation or not cruising at all,” Twidale said. “Now – five years later – we’re back to 2019 numbers. Travel demand has been soaring, and long holiday weekends create the perfect windows for getaways.” 

When are the best and worst times to travel on Memorial Day?

For those planning a road trip for the holiday weekend, transportation data and insights provider INRIX offers the best times to get on the road.

Experts advise drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early to avoid mixing with commuters. Travelers going back home on Sunday or Monday should avoid the afternoon hours when return trips will peak.  

“Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal. Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said.

MIAMI — A record-setting 2.5 million Floridians plan to hit the road or airport for the long holiday weekend, according to a  travel forecast from AAA .

That’s 126,500 more holiday travelers than the previous record set last year. The club projects 2.3 million Florida travelers will journey 50 miles or more in a car, while more than 224,000 will take an air-based voyage.

Nationally, AAA anticipates the second-highest-traveled Memorial Day weekend on record, with nearly 43.8 million Americans venturing more than 50 miles, just shy of 2005′s high of 44 million.

“Memorial Day will be the start to a very busy summer of travel,” said Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, in a news release. “American travelers are forecast to surpass pre-pandemic levels, making this the busiest Memorial Day holiday weekend in nearly two decades.”

Even as gas prices have inched upward,  averaging $3.55 per gallon in Florida  on Thursday compared with $3.41 at this time last year, road trips are expected to set a record in the Sunshine State and nationwide with nearly 38.4 million Americans on the road, 1.5 million more than last year. In addition, this will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005.

During a rush of spring break travelers earlier this year, Orlando International Airport  saw its busiest day in history  with more than 200,000 travelers passing through TSA checkpoints on March 16.

While Floridians may be driving or jetting off to other parts of the state and country, Orlando tops the list of domestic travel locations for tourists this weekend, according to AAA booking data. New York, Las Vegas, Miami, Denver, Anchorage and Southern California are also in the top 10 destinations.

Average airfare and gas prices are both slightly higher in 2024 than in 2023, but hotel prices are 5% cheaper this Memorial Day weekend compared to last year. Domestic car rentals are also less expensive by about 17% year over year, with an average total cost of $439 (typically for a few days).

Using data from  Inrix , AAA suggests drivers leaving Thursday or Friday should hit the road early, before 11 a.m., to avoid the worst traffic. Those coming home on Saturday or Sunday will find the best travel time before 1 p.m. On Monday, it’s advised to drive after 7 p.m. for the best chance of avoiding congestion. On all travel days, evenings should also prove less busy for road trippers.

This weekend, AAA is activating its  “Tow to Go” program in Florida  and other select states to help keep impaired drivers off the road. Tow trucks will be available to AAA members and nonmembers from 6 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Tuesday to transport vehicles and owners to a safe location within a 10-mile radius. Floridians can call 855-2-TOW-2-GO or 855-286-9246 for a safe ride.

As travelers plan for this summer and beyond, AAA has pinpointed bucket lists, milestones, solo trips, luxury vacations, trains, adventures in nature and Asia trips as the primary trends behind booking upcoming getaways.

How to Avoid Traffic and Crowds While Traveling This Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day officially kicks off the summer travel season here in the US, and millions of travelers plan relaxing long weekends around it. But in order to get to a sunny beach or serene national park to unwind, you'll likely have to contend with stressful crowds and traffic—unless you time your great escape exactly right.

No matter what type of transportation you choose, Memorial Day traffic will be inevitable this year. According to AAA data, nearly 44 million Americans will be traveling over the holiday stretch from Thursday, May 23 to Monday, May 27. That’s the second highest number AAA has seen since it began tracking Memorial Day data in 2000.

“We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead,” Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel, said in a statement.

Fortunately, there are a few simple steps travelers can take to avoid the worst of the hubbub, whether on the interstate, at the airport, or a train station. Being smart about when to depart and return can make a huge difference in terms of traffic—and smoothing out other logistics.

Here’s a guide to the best and worst times to travel over Memorial Day Weekend , broken down by mode of transport.

According to AAA’s projections, the majority of travelers will be hitting the open road this Memorial Day : More than 87% of travelers—a whopping 38.4 million people—are planning to take a road trip over the weekend. That’s the highest number of Memorial Day drivers AAA has ever seen, meaning planning ahead will be more important than ever.

In general, it’s a good idea to get an early start when driving on Thursday and Friday. On those days, the best car travel times will be before 11 a.m., according to AAA’s report, which used traffic data from Inrix. After 7 p.m. on Thursday or 8 p.m. on Friday will also see lower traffic numbers. The worst times to be on the road on Thursday and Friday will be from about noon to 7 p.m. (all local time).

When returning home on Sunday or Monday, you’ll want to avoid driving between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., as those times are projected to be the most congested on the road. Instead, aim to depart before 1 p.m. on Sunday or after 7 p.m. on Monday when the number of cars on the road will be significantly lower.

AAA and Inrix also mapped out the peak Memorial Day traffic periods throughout the weekend for 16 major cities across the US. If you’re driving to or from a major metropolis, it’s worth checking out the table for the worst traffic time for your destination. For example, if you plan to drive to Tampa, Florida, at 9 a.m. on Sunday (forecasted to be the city's peak congestion time) on Interstate 75 south, you can expect your journey to be 88% longer than normal. “Travel times are expected to be up to 90% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at Inrix, said in the AAA release. “Travelers should stay up to date on traffic apps, 511 services, and local news stations to avoid sitting in traffic longer than necessary.”

If you’re renting a car , prepare for long wait times at the rental lots, especially in popular vacation destinations like Orlando, Denver, Atlanta, Boston, and Las Vegas, which are showing the highest rental demand, according to car rental company Hertz. The busiest pickup days will be Thursday May 23 and Friday May 24. Before setting out on your trip, check with your car rental company to see if they offer an expedited pickup option. Companies usually offer express checkout or fast lane options for members of their loyalty programs, which are usually free to join. You could also consider alternative car rental companies like Turo and Kyte, which offer up private drivers’ personal cars through an app. These options can be cheaper and will help you sidestep hectic rental lots altogether.

Train journeys

AAA predicts that an additional 1.9 million travelers will take other modes of transport this Memorial Day, including buses , cruises , and trains .

Summer is one of the most popular times of year for travelers to book trips on Amtrak , with the holiday weekends being especially busy. Although data from Amtrak on which routes and departure times would be busiest wasn’t immediately available, it’s safe to assume that the busiest travel times will be close to the general guidelines for road travel. With that said, prepare for packed trains on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to about 8 p.m., and for crowds on board to peak on Sunday and Monday later in the day, from about 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

If your train offers business class, you might consider upgrading your seat. Not only does the premium car allow more leg room and complimentary drinks, but you also get a seat assignment in advance, allowing you to bypass the scramble for a spot after boarding.

If you're traveling by Amtrak train over the long weekend, consider upgrading to business class so you can nab a favorable seat assignment.

AAA says that more than 3.5 million air travelers will take to the skies this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8% over last year.

Friday, May 24 will be the peak travel day at US airports with 26,265 flights scheduled to take off across the country, according to data from aviation analytics firm Cirium. TSA forecasts show Friday will also be the busiest day at airport security checkpoints, with the agency anticipating to screen nearly 3 million passengers that day alone.

All this means you’ll want to follow the standard advice of arriving at the airport at least two hours before a domestic flight (and three hours for international ones), especially if you’re returning a rental car, checking bags, and/or don’t have a membership to and expedited security service like TSA PreCheck or Clear.

If possible, it's always smart to try and get on the first flight of the day, says Hopper’s Memorial Day report . “In general, flights departing after 9 a.m. are two times more likely to be delayed than departures scheduled between 5-8 a.m.,” the report says. “To avoid travel disruption, fly as early in the morning as possible.”

Here’s a look at the 10 US airports that will be the busiest over the long weekend, and the busiest travel times at each one, according to Hopper’s predictions.

• Atlanta ATL: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Dallas DFW: Busiest time to depart: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
• Denver DEN: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Chicago O'Hare ORD: Busiest time to depart: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
• Los Angeles LAX: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• New York City JFK: Busiest time to depart: 4 p.m. - 8 p.m.
• Charlotte CLT: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Las Vegas LAS: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Orlando MCO: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
• Seattle SEA: Busiest time to depart: 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

There are a few things you can do to make sure the airport security screening goes as smoothly as possible. If you’re enrolled in a trusted traveler program like TSA PreCheck, make sure your known traveler number (KTN)—a unique ID sequence of letters and numbers—is on your boarding pass. Without it, you won’t be granted access to the PreCheck lane. You can add your KTN to your reservation during the booking process, or after you purchase your tickets by calling the airline. You can also ask an airline agent to do this at the ticketing desk in the airport, but expect long lines.

Currently, 20 domestic airports allow travelers to schedule a free fast-track through the regular security line by reserving a time slot online. The shortcut, called Reserve by Clear, is completely free of charge and essentially allots fliers a set appointment time so they can breeze through security.
