Planning & Restrictions

What to bring.

  • Mask (will get wet – we recommend cloth or bringing an extra)
  • Cell phone (in the event that we need to contact you or you need to contact us prior to the excursion)
  • Comfortable clothes that can get wet (we recommend a bathing suit or active wear)
  • Shoes that can get wet (flip flops are fine)
  • Towel and change of clothes for after the excursion
  • DO NOT BRING ANY VALUABLES OR ITEMS THAT CANNOT GET WET – lost items are very hard to find in the water at night, and anything you take with you will get wet!

MINIMUM PARTICIPATION

This excursion requires a minimum of at least six guests in order to provide the tour. In the event this minimum is not met, we will call you before the excursion to go over alternative options (i.e. reschedule for a different date or time that has the minimum requirement, payment options for a private excursion, or cancel without penalty).

DISCLOSURES

  • Bioluminescence is a natural phenomenon that is unpredictable and subject to change. Therefore, it is impossible to ensure its brightness levels.
  • Depending on the season, it is possible to find large amounts of sargassum (floating algae) during the tour; this is also a natural phenomenon, but it can become uncomfortable.
  • At times, we experience strong winds and currents in the bay, which increases the effort of paddling and physical activity. However, you’ll be paddling out to a lagoon, so you won’t have to worry about waves in open water.
  • Participants must be comfortable with dark environments. Not recommended for guests who may be prone to anxiety while on crowded and reduced spaces.

HEALTH & AGE RESTRICTIONS

  • Maximum Weight Limit:   Kayaks have a weight limit of 240 pounds per guest, but the total capacity per double kayak is up to 425 pounds between 2 guests.
  • Minimum Age: 6 years old | Participants Ages 6-13 must be accompanied by an adult on the same kayak | Participants Ages 14-17 must have an adult participating on the tour.
  • The following guests cannot participate: • Pregnant women • Guests with recent surgeries • Guests with neck, back, arm or leg problems or casts • Guests who have epilepsy, heart conditions and/or dizziness
  • Other important notes: • We cannot accommodate 3 participants in one kayak. • All guests must be able to communicate in English or Spanish. • Guests that show signs of intoxication by Drugs or Alcohol will not be allowed to participate. • You are responsible for sharing the information throughout this email with the rest of your group and for notifying us ahead of time with any concerns about your health or physical condition for the excursion.

Kayaking Lesson

First time kayaking no problem.

Check out this video for a couple of tips before joining us on your Bio Bay Kayak Tour.

Photography & Video

Be careful with your camera.

Bioluminescence is almost impossible to capture with regular cameras. Plus, everything in your kayak will get wet. We strongly recommend you be careful with your camera.

If you still want to bring a camera, make sure that it is waterproof. We also recommend that you use a leash to attach it to your life vest. Do not expose expensive and SRL cameras to futile risks. The place will be completely dark. Diving in the lagoon is prohibited. If anything falls in the water, it will be impossible to recover.

Kayaking Trip Puerto Rico gives free photos if the equipment works. We’ll upload your photos and offer you links to download your favorites. As a thank you for choosing us as your Puerto Rico operators these images are free.

Notes: Please allow 5-7 days for the link to be sent to you via email. If you would rather not have your photo taken no problem, please just notify your guides at the beginning of each excursion.

Experience the Magic of Puerto Rico’s Bioluminescent Bays

There are only five bioluminescent bays in the world and Puerto Rico is home to three of them! Located in Fajardo, Vieques, and Lajas, Puerto Rico’s bio bays are the most incredible destinations on the island. You just can’t miss an opportunity to kayak at night and watch the water twinkle and glow in shades of white, blue, and green. Described as a smattering of pixie dust, or tiny lights floating in the water, bioluminescence is a phenomenon you have to see in person to truly understand – photos just don’t do it justice!

So what makes the water in Puerto Rico’s bio bays sparkle and glow? The bays are populated by millions of microorganisms called dinoflagellates who make their food by photosynthesis, a process that creates a glowing effect in the dark. All it takes is the stroke of a paddle, the wake of a boat, or even your hand to set the water aglow. Bioluminescence is a somewhat fragile phenomenon. Pollution, excess wind, and the full moon can impact the light concentration in the bays, which is why it’s important to time your visit accordingly. No matter which of the three bays you choose, you won’t forget your night kayak adventure.

Explore The Bio Bay in Laguna Grande!

For the brightest bio bay experience on the main island make sure to visit Laguna Grande in Fajardo. You can also opt to turn your trip to Fajardo into a full day adventure, with a variety of combo tours that will take you beyond the Bio Bay and through the tropical El Yunque Rainforest.

Adventure Details

At the prescribed time, meet for your Bio Bay Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour on the beach of Las Croabas, a small fishing village located on the extreme northeastern tip of Puerto Rico.

Your Eco Adventures guides call the group of kayakers together for a briefing session covering basic kayak handling, rules of the road, and the importance of keeping to a minimum any disturbance of the pristine environment of the bioluminescent lagoon.

Then we launch our kayaks and head for a hidden opening in the mangroves at the northern end of the beach. Upon entering the mangroves, we follow a channel for a mile that leads to the Laguna Grande.

Leaving the channel and entering the lagoon by itself is a breathtaking experience! A wide expanse of gentle, rippling water surrounded by mangrove forests greets the adventurer, the mountains of the El Yunque Rainforest tower in the distance – profound tranquility envelopes all who enter!

But the best is yet to come! Your guides call the flotilla together for an informative talk about several topics: This unique ecosystem, the flora, fauna, and sea life that inhabits the lagoon, and historical notes of interest.

Discuss the Fajardo Lighthouse, built by the Spanish in the 19th century, and of course, the incredible natural phenomenon that we’re here for – the shimmering glow of bioluminescence as you dip your paddles and glide through the sparkling water – an amazingly unique experience only found in four other places on earth!

Bioluminescent Bay East Kayaking Tour

Experience Puerto Rico’s Bioluminescent Bay

Your visit to Puerto Rico isn’t complete until you discover the natural wonders of one of our bioluminescent bays. Join us on an unforgettable tour to see this unique phenomenon.

Las Cabezas de San Juan National Park, set aside by the Department for Natural and Environmental Resources, is recognized as a world-class treasure. Within it is found one of the world’s few ‘Bio Bays’ where there are sufficient microscopic bioluminescent organisms to produce light visible to plain eyesight. Just agitate the water to activate the show.

We start our journey with a pickup at your hotel lobby. It’s an hour and a half drive from San Juan to Fajardo. The highway east drives you past the mountains that are the tropical rainforest. Immerse yourself in the perspective of the north east side of Puerto Rico. Once in Fajardo, you will receive a briefing on the use of tandem kayaks, with additional rules to follow on entering the bio bay.

After dusk, our tour guide will lead you and paddle out towards a mangrove lined canal that connects to the bio bay. Scientific reasons for the effect will be provided. Once at Laguna Grande an amount of time is given to frolic about kayaking and splashing water. (approx. 30 min.)

Guide, life vests, and Kayaks are provided. We drop you off at your hotel around 11 p.m.

What to Bring/Attire

  • Dry fit clothes or bathing suit
  • Change of clothes
  • Camera (waterproof is best)

Notes/Precautions

This tour departs from San Juan. To account for transportation, participants should allow up to 6 hours for the entire experience.

  • The bio bay is an unpredictable natural phenomenon that may be influenced by multiple factors. Bioluminosity level can vary from very visible to a minimum or none without any previous notice.
  • Full Moon phase may also affect the visibility of the bioluminescence. In the event of this happening alternate methods such as the use of a tarp will be incorporated to appreciate it.

ABOUT PARGUERA WATER SPORTS IN PUERTO RICO

Parguera Water Sports took its first baby steps in the summer of 2007. Master Captain Mendoza, founder of PWS, comes from two very important and influential backgrounds in his life: he worked as a Senior Sales executive for FedEx and the most important influence was his beloved father. He is also known as “Captain Uchy Mendoza”.

The summer of 1977 marked the start of his learning process. Going with his father as deckhand on unaccountable Marine Science Research Expeditions and Commercial Fishing Trips. Love and fascination for one of God’s amazing creations – the ocean – were the elements that ignited this small company. At Parguera Water Sports, services are provided day & night. We offer everything from supervised kayak tours in the bioluminescent Puerto Rico waters to boat charters around the island.

A PUERTO RICO KAYAKING EXPERIENCE YOU’LL NEVER FORGET!

Hi from Texas! A group of 5 of us went on vacation to Puerto Rico last week and had the most amazing time! Our tour guides were phenomenal! They took us out via boat onto kayaks where we then got to jump into the bay and swim in the bioluminescent bay! They even provided us with snorkels to use while in the water! It was the best experience ever and they were so amazing! 💯 customer satisfaction!! Thank y’all for an amazing night!

The gentlemen at Parguera Water Sports were skilled, thoughtful, and kind. They treated every passenger with respect and even gave us all extra time to put on the bio bay to make up for lost time that they had no control over. The views are once in a life time and the guides will make you laugh and feel safe the entire way. Could not recommend highly enough.

This experience was something that my family and I will never forget! We had such an amazing time, first snorkeling, canoeing and a nice night swim at the bioluminescent bay! Our captain Irwin was the best!!! He was super knowledgeable, patient with my son (7 year old), and just such a positive vibe. We will for sure book again. For any families booking make sure to bring food as the experience is four hours long. We look forward to more adventures in the future.

The bioluminescent were sparkling in the bay and even brighter in the mangroves were we kayaked. We were the only ones in the bay for most of the tour. Captain Mendoza was a great guide and very knowledgeable on the surrounding areas and the bioluminescent. We highly recommend using him for your next tour in the bay.

Kayak Salt River Bay’s Luminous Lagoon

Ready for an indescribable experience you’ll remember for a lifetime? Our Bioluminescent Kayak Trip is by far one of our most popular St. Croix tours!

Your trip sets out before sundown, in “Bio Bay” on the east side of Salt River and one km kayak trip from our launch site. From there, your guide will fill you in on all the local ecology, history, and spiritual mysteries of Salt River before we head to Mangrove Lagoon to see the glowing water.

A truly mystical and natural wonder of nature, it is impossible to describe bioluminescent water other than a blue-ish aura that appears when you disturb the water. Truly one of St Croix’s most beautiful hidden gems!

Bioluminescence is the natural phenomenon of living creatures emitting light, and these glowing organisms are on display year-round inside the Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Reserve.

Within the bay is a smaller bay, formerly known as Mangrove Lagoon, which houses a large population of bioluminescent plankton known as dinoflagellates. In what biologists theorize is a defense mechanism, these dinoflagellates respond to physical contact by emitting light, scaring off any would-be predators.

In order to observe these creatures we require complete darkness, thus our excursions are dependent on the moon cycle! We run Bioluminescent Kayak Trips when the moon will be below the horizon during evening hours (that’s true for two weeks following the full moon), or when the moon is in its crescent phase.

You have to see this natural phenomenon to believe it! Book your St. Croix kayaking trip online today.

Please note that rates are ticketed per person and each kayak holds up to two people.

Come with PURE ADVENTURE, the only company that features a  Marine Biologist as your field guide . We will explain all the processes involved and the unique conditions required for this supernatural phenomena to occur. Your Marine Biologist will also explain how this delicate ecosystem maintains a pure balance and what must be done to preserve and protect the Bio Bay “Laguna Grande”…a very special place on Planet Earth!

bioluminescent bay kayaking tour

There are only four (Bio bay) bioluminescent bays and one lagoon in existence on Earth! Very few people, even Puerto Ricans, are aware of our little known, bioluminescent lagoon. Pure Adventure provides a unique opportunity to visit and actually kayak in the “Bio-Lagoon” known as “Laguna Grande”. This lagoon is the best place to appreciate this phenomenon, being a closed environment, allowing the microorganisms to flourish in bigger concentrations! This glowing effect can be appreciated at any given night.

The Bio Bay Adventure tour is one of Puerto Rico’s most popular. There are four things that our guests need to take in consideration:

1)  In order to best appreciate the bioluminescent phenomena our tours run at sunset and early evening and it can get quite dark in the mangrove canal. So, if you are afraid of darkness, a first time kayaker, or have small kids we strongly suggest taking the earlier, sunset trip. This way you can see where you are going, get use to the environment and sharpen your kayaking skills.

2)  Due to the immense popularity the Bio Bay tour, at times can get crowded. It’s not uncommon to meet up with other tour groups waiting to access the canal leading to the lagoon. There can be bumping other kayaks along the way. When crowded conditions warrant, Pure Adventure will provide extra guides for your safety.

3)  Please keep in mind that this tour takes place in a natural environment and that the bioluminescent phenomenon, although rare, can be seen year round. The intensity of brightness is unpredictable and can vary. Most important – the glow is always there!  ENJOY THE SHOW!

4) For safety reason, children under 6 years old and pregnant women CAN’T participate on any of the kayaking excursions.pregnant women, kids under 6 years old or those who have epilepsy, back problems, heart conditions, dizziness, recent surgery or any other condition that may put life in risk are not allowed to participate in PURE ADVENTURE tour. Maximum weight per person is 220 pounds. Guests will be weighed on site. Please help us make this a pleasant experience for all. Prepare for a Pure Adventure!!!

What others are saying

Definitely recommend.

"This is one of the night kayak tours happens near the laguna grande(bioluminescent bay) near fajardo. I am visiting Puerto Rico first time and wanted to experience bioluminescent bay and did a booking with eco tours. The guides were super good, they explained how to navigate using kayaks and other orientations. As this tour happens in the night I would suggest sometimes it will be dark and navigate between canal which connects to the bay. The guides will help you to navigate if you haven’t done kayaking but requires energy. Avoid moon lights as you won’t see any bioluminescent light. Tours and guides is very good and make sure you will have fun. They explain about the tour and history of it. I would definitely recommend them 👍👍" - Mallanagouda Patil

Amazing Adventure

"This was an amazing adventure! It was my first time kayaking and the guides took time to explain the basics and gave a quick rundown on what to expect. That was super helpful. I really liked that they were attentive and made sure the group was continuously in their sights. Our guide was super engaging, but all of them were very knowledgeable and answered all questions put to them. I would definitely do this again and highly recommend using this company on your Bio Tour!" - D Broderick

Had a Great Time

"Angel was a great guide. The experience was really great, definitely go on the later time slot so it can be as dark as possible to see the bioluminescent plankton. DO USE YOURSELF IN BUG SPRAY, LOTS OF MOSQUITOES ON THE WAY THERE. DON’T expect what you see on YouTube or social media. A lot of those videos are enhanced, and you’ll only set yourself up to be disappointed. But DO appreciate that this is something you will not see many other places in the world, and appreciate it for what it is. Had a great time and a great experience." - Roberto Luis

Exploring the Enchantment of Bioluminescent Bay Fajardo: The Ultimate Guide Unveiling the Magic of Puerto Rico's Bioluminescent Bays Puerto Rico is home to some of the most breathtaking bioluminescent bays in the world, offering visitors a chance to witness nature's light show firsthand. Unlike other bays, these captivating wonders can be experienced year-round, promising a memorable adventure. The Dazzling Science Behind the Glow At the heart of these bioluminescent bays lies a mesmerizing natural phenomenon. The glowing waters are a result of countless dinoflagellates, single-celled organisms that emit light when agitated. The intensity of the luminous display can vary, influenced by multiple factors. Among them, the moon phase emerges as a key player. Prepare to align your journey with the lunar calendar to make the most of this awe-inspiring spectacle. When to Visit Bioluminescent Bay Fajardo Optimal Months for Maximum Radiance While the bioluminescence graces the bays year-round, the dry season spanning from December to mid-April offers the prime window for experiencing their brilliance. This period ensures clear waters, enhancing the visibility of the glowing organisms. In contrast, the rainy season from June to November tends to obscure the display due to increased water cloudiness. To bask in the enchanting glow, plan your visit during the dry season for a memorable experience. Navigating the Crowds As the dry season offers the most favorable weather, it also attracts higher numbers of travelers. The bustling atmosphere brings with it increased flight and accommodation costs. To avoid the peak crowds, steer clear of mid-March, coinciding with Spring Break. February and April shine as optimal months for a serene and vibrant encounter with the bioluminescent bays. Unleashing the Brightest Glow: Moonlight Matters The Impact of Moon Phases The new moon reigns as the hero for witnessing the bioluminescence at its zenith. The absence of moonlight creates a darker sky, accentuating the radiant display of the dinoflagellates. Even the renowned Mosquito Bay, known for its brilliance, can be affected by moonlight. To unlock optimal brightness, consult a lunar calendar alongside your tour plans. Target the new moon night or the days immediately before or after it for a remarkable experience. Navigating the Tide and Temperature Additional Factors Influencing Brightness Apart from moonlight, the tide and water temperature play roles in determining the dinoflagellates' concentration and the subsequent glow intensity. Most tour operators ensure that tours are conducted only when brightness levels exceed 30%. To avoid any uncertainty, a simple call to confirm the expected glow level for your visit is advisable. This precaution ensures you're met with a breathtaking spectacle. Preserving a Natural Wonder: A Lasting Impression A Glimpse of Nature's Resilience Bioluminescent bays, while captivating, are also delicate ecosystems. Natural disasters, such as Hurricane María in 2017, can impact their splendor. This storm led to the temporary dimming of Mosquito Bay as dinoflagellates were displaced, emphasizing the vulnerability of these wonders. Visiting these natural gems serves as a reminder of their ephemeral nature and underscores the importance of cherishing them. Kayak Village: Your Gateway to Bioluminescent Wonder Embarking on Your Adventure Set your sights on Kayak Village, located at 987 Street in Fajardo, Puerto Rico. This hub promises a doorway to the enchanting realm of bioluminescent bays, offering an array of tours and experiences for you to choose from. Frequently Asked Questions 1. What Are Bioluminescent Bays? Bioluminescent bays are natural wonders where millions of dinoflagellates create a mesmerizing blue-green glow in the water, triggered by movement. This ethereal phenomenon turns the bays into dazzling light shows. 2. Which Is the Best Time to See Bioluminescence? The best time to experience the brilliance of bioluminescence is during a new moon. The darker sky enhances the visibility of the glowing organisms. Aim for a new moon night or a few days around it for optimal viewing. 3. When Is the Ideal Season to Visit? The dry season, from December to mid-April, offers the best conditions for visiting. Clear waters and favorable weather ensure vibrant displays. Avoid the rainy season (June to November) when water cloudiness can obscure the glow. 4. How Does Moonlight Affect the Glow? Moonlight, even from a bright moon, can diminish the effect of the dinoflagellates. For the brightest glow, schedule your tour during a new moon night or shortly before/after it. 5. How Do Tide and Temperature Impact Brightness? Tide and water temperature influence the concentration of dinoflagellates, affecting the glow's intensity. Tour operators typically require a brightness level exceeding 30% for tours. 6. How Can I Preserve These Ecosystems? Be mindful of your impact when visiting bioluminescent bays. Respect the delicate balance of these ecosystems, and support efforts to preserve them for future generations. Embrace the Enchantment Witnessing the bioluminescent bays of Fajardo is an experience that transcends the ordinary. As nature's light show unfolds around you, the magic of these glowing waters will leave an indelible mark on your memory. By understanding the optimal conditions for viewing, you can plan a trip that aligns with the natural rhythms of Puerto Rico's enchanting bays. So, gear up for an adventure that promises to be both awe-inspiring and unforgettable.

I sat silently in my kayak, one hand swirling the water outside the boat. With each gentle swish, a miniature constellation of underwater “stars” twinkled around my fingers. In the kayak beside me, a woman spun her paddle in the water and gasped at the tiny explosion of light. Ahead of me, the comet-like streak of green in the water indicated a fish swimming near the surface. That’s the magic of Bio Bay tours.

I’d come to Isla de Vieques, off Puerto Rico’s main island on a kayaktrip in its world-famous bioluminescent bay. The experience was everything I’d hoped for — a stroke of luck, given how poorly I’d arranged my trip. Getting the most out of a bio bay tour requires a lot of advance planning, and, in the case of Vieques, more cash than you might expect.

Here’s what I wish I knew before making the trip.

13 Things I Wish Somebody Told Me Before Taking the Fajardo Bioluminescent Bay Tour in Puerto Rico

1. bioluminescence is surprisingly common.

Much like fireflies do on land, single-celled, water surface–dwelling organisms called dinoflagellates, a type of plankton, can emit light underwater. They aren’t the only marine organisms that glow. Some 1,500 species of fish are known to luminesce, as well as certain types of squid, jellyfish, worms, and crustaceans. Many use bioluminescence as lures for food or mates, or to confuse predators.

Although dinoflagellates are microscopic, they often form large colonies. The human eye doesn’t detect the bioluminescence when a water body is still. But when disturbed, such as by wind that ripples the surface or the slicing of a boat hull through the water, our eyes translate the light wavelengths into glow-in-the-dark sparkles and zigzags of green or blue-green.

2. Puerto Rico Has Three Bioluminescent Bays

The planet currently has five ecosystems where dinoflagellate concentrations are high enough to consistently cause this bioluminescent phenomenon. Puerto Rico claims three of them where Bio Bay tours are organized.

In Fajardo, along the east coast of the main island , Laguna Grande is the most trafficked of the trio. It’s not as bright as the others, but at only an hour by car from San Juan , it’s the easiest to get to. This also makes it the most touristy of the bunch.

A few of the better-known Laguna Grande tour operators include:

  • Eco Adventures
  • Kayaking Puerto Rico
  • Yokahú Kayak Trips
  • Puerto Rico Bio Bay Tours

In Lajas, on the opposite corner of the main island, La Parguera is the least visited of the three bays. At about 2.5 hours from San Juan, it’s a much longer drive than Laguna Grande, but a worthwhile stop if you’re visiting the western side of Puerto Rico.

Some Bio Bay tours allow swimming in La Parguera. Because chemicals in bug repellents, sunscreens, and body lotions can kill the phytoplankton, you’ll need to shower before joining a tour that includes swimming or diving through the bio bay.

Try one of these La Parguera tour operators:

  • Parguera Eco Tours
  • Bio Bay Tours
  • Kayaking Parguera
  • Alelí Tours

The granddaddy of all bioluminescent bays, and the brightest in the world, is Mosquito Bay in Vieques. Although Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017, Mosquito Bay’s dinoflagellate population has, miraculously, doubled since then. On a dark night, you’re almost guaranteed to see something spectacular.

Tour operators on Vieques include:

  • Abe’s Snorkeling
  • Black Beard Sports
  • Vieques Kayaks Bio Bay
  • Jak Water Sports

3. Booking A Tour Can Lead To Unexpected Expenses

You can rent a car and drive to Laguna Grande or La Parguera. Mosquito Bay isn’t connected to the main island, so you’ll need to take a ferry (about $40 per person) or small plane (about $120 per person) from Ceiba, or fly directly from San Juan (about $130 per person), to get there. Depending on the time of year, ferry and flight service may or may not be available after 7 p.m. Residents of Laguna Grande are given preference on the ferry, which means you could get bumped from an especially full voyage.

In addition, many bio bay kayaking tour operators require an address where you’ll be staying on the island in order to complete booking. Since cars aren’t allowed on the ferry to Vieques, you must rent a car or line up a taxi ride once on the island.

The short story: It’s best to plan an overnight stay on the island.

Between our flights, taxi, accommodations in the least expensive Airbnb we could find, and the tour itself, my husband and I spent about $450 on this portion of our kayak trip. Allow for more costs if you plan a day trip to El Yunque National Forest – the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System.

We chose Abe’s Snorkeling for our excursion. The sea life kayaking experience was very good overall, although the tour operator, like an airline, oversold their 7 p.m. tour. About a dozen of us were bumped, with no notice, to the 9 p.m. slot. For our trouble, our guide offered each pairing of people a refund on one ticket.

4. Almost Anyone Can Do It

Bio bay kayaking is appropriate for most levels of ability. The water is usually calm, and paddling is done at a laid-back pace, mostly in two-person boats. Because you’re kayaking in the dark, it’s important to follow your tour guide and his instructions and stick close to your tour group. This could be tricky for travelers with vision or hearing impairments. If you’ve got grandkids in tow, ask about age restrictions.

5. Know Your Moon Cycles, And Book In Advance

You might be able to book a tour on the fly, but I wouldn’t risk it. Most fill up several months in advance, especially during the high season.

Although Puerto Rico’s bays luminesce year round, you’ll have the best experience on a dark night. Kayaking during a new moon is preferable because the glow percentage is usually higher. Using a moon phases calendar will help you chart out the best time to go.

Most operators don’t even run tours 3 days before or after a full moon. We didn’t realize this when we booked our Puerto Rican vacation. Fortunately, the final night was just beyond the full-moon window.

The day before or the morning of your excursion, call your tour operator to check on the bay’s brightness; it should be a minimum of 30 percent. In addition to the moon, tides and water temperature affect how much color you see.

6. Ask About Clear-Bottomed Boats

Some tour companies offer clear-bottomed boats, which allow for a unique look at the bioluminescence directly underneath you. This isn’t the default option, so be sure to ask if it’s important to you.

7. Dress To Get Wet

Wear comfortable clothing, such as shorts and a T-shirt, preferably made of tech or quick-drying fabrics; some splashing is normal during any kayaking outing. Pants and shorts with zipper pockets are useful for storing a credit card, in case you want to stop at a restaurant or bar on the way back to your hotel or Airbnb (no need to take a full wallet or cash). Sturdy walking sandals, knit sneakers, or aqua shoes are all good choices for footwear.

Don’t count on being able to stash extra clothing or shoes with the tour operator; take only what you need.

8. Skip The Sunscreens And Skin Lotions

Wash your hands and feet before the trip, and don’t apply any moisturizer, serums, or lotions. You’ll be allowed to dip toes and fingers in the water, but chemicals from common skin products can kill the dinoflagellates.

9. It’s Okay To Take Your Phone

Your bio bay tour guide will tell you to leave your cell phone behind, ostensibly because its camera won’t be able to capture the glow. This may be true, or it may be an effort to reduce the sharing of images, which might, in turn, lead to a reduction in tour purchases. I regretted listening to this advice. I think I could have used my cell phone camera in manual mode and gotten sufficiently long exposures to get quality and free photos of some of the luminescence.

Bottom line: There’s no harm in taking your phone, as long as you seal it in a floating dry bag, and wear it on a lanyard around your neck. Just be aware that if you accidentally overturn your kayak, you might have trouble retrieving the phone in the dark. And don’t spend all your time taking pictures. The best part of the experience is staying in the moment and enjoying the display.

10. Be Prepared For A Wild Ride

The drive out to the bio bay is a bit like riding a roller coaster without a seat belt. Our bus driver clearly had been making this drive for years, and he knew every pothole and curve in the road — and took most of them at a robust clip. In the dark. I had to pry my fingers out of the seat upholstery after he swerved through small herds of the island’s free-roaming horses. Fortunately, he didn’t hit any.

Pro Tip: About those Viequense horses: They’re not wild, even if tourism brochures and resorts market them as such. All are owned by residents and are set free to browse the island’s grasses when not being used as transportation. Sadly, these beautiful animals are frequently killed in road accidents. If you rent a car, drive slowly and cautiously.

11. Keep Your Expectations In Check

Nature is fickle, and an evening of 100 percent glow might be followed by one of less than 30 percent. To make matters worse, all promotional images of Bio Bay tours are Photoshopped. While it is a breathtaking sight, you will not be engulfed in a happy blue halo, nor will the water light up on its own. What you’ll see is more akin to an underwater shower of glitter every time you or your tour mates dip an oar or hand into the bay.

12. Bio Bay Tour Without Kayaks

Is there another means of transportation to get to the bay? Yes, there is now an eco-friendly way to visit Laguna Grande without having to kayak. Bio Island is a company that offers an electric motorboat tour that is both fun and safe for the environment.

They use a really quiet electric motor approved by the DRNA. A low-emission gas motor is used until the boat gets into the channel and then they switch to electric. Being a small Carolina Skiff, the boat has a very low profile, not much deeper than the kayak bottoms.

13. Bio Bay Is Virtually Impossible to Photograph

This is because the illumination is not originating from the water itself, but rather the dinoflagellates in the water. The images that you see online are captured using long exposure techniques, and don’t look anything like the real thing.

However, the elusive nature of capturing the Bio Bay on film doesn’t mean that it is at all subtle. If you go out when the bay is particularly active you’ll never experience anything so stunningly surreal and beautiful. You should only hope that someday you’ll be lucky enough to see it again.

Is Bioluminescent Bay Kayak Trip Worth The Extra Trouble And Expense?

That’s a big yes. Although I can’t speak for Laguna Grande or La Parguera, kayaking Mosquito Bay was as close to magical as an outdoor experience can get. The bay is wide open and hushed, and even with other groups of kayakers out on the water, it felt like we were the only ones. Paddling was relaxed over the hour and a half we spent out on the water. Even the inexperienced kayakers had a great time.

Because I’d read up in advance and scaled my expectations, I wasn’t disappointed. The bioluminescent glow was actually more pronounced than I figured it would be, with miniature fireworks going off each time a boat pushed through the water. It wasn’t the neon blue radiance shown on tour websites, but it still felt otherworldly, like holding a galaxy of tiny stars in my palms. Aside of Puerto Rico, you can also see bioluminescent water on the Southern California coas t.

When Is the Best Time for a Kayak Trip in Bio Bay in Puerto Rico?

Generally, the best time for a kayak trip is around the new moon when there is less moonlight in the sky to interfere with the glow. Many factors affect how visible the bioluminescence is on any given night, including cloud cover which may help to block the moon and its light.

Why Is the Bio Bay Closed for Three Days Each Month During the Full Moon?

The Department of Natural Resources in Puerto Rico does not allow any tours during those days every month so that Bio Bay can get some  “rest” from human interaction.

Can I Go to See the Bio Bay in Puerto Rico on My Own?

No. Bio Bay is only open to tour companies with DRNA permits, not individuals. It is safest to go with a reputable and insured tour company with a tour guide who will explain the biology of the fragile ecosystem there for you.

Can Small Children Go On Bio Bay Tours in Puerto Rico?

Yes, tour companies take infants and young children on their Bio Bay tours. Infant and child life vests are available and the kids will be seated in a parent’s lap in the kayak. Inexperienced kayakers are advised not to kayak with kids.

What Should I Bring for My Bio Bay, Puerto Rico Tour?

You should bring a towel, natural DEET-free bug spray, and some kind of water shoes. For our day tours, you should also bring sunscreen and protective clothing like rash guards and hats if you like.

Wildlife & Weather

The focus of the Bioluminescence Kayak Tour is one of the area’s tiniest visible organisms, noctiluca. Before these sparkling creatures are visible we may also encounter a variety of other wildlife:

  • Porpoise: Harbor and Dalls porpoise are encountered year round.
  • Harbor Seals, California Sea Lions, and Stellar Sea Lions: Fairly Common in these areas.
  • River Otters: More elusive but seen any time of year. Most sightings are early morning or late afternoon.
  • Bald Eagles: San Juan host a healthy population of Bald Eagles with many nesting sites.
  • Great Blue Herons: Commonly encountered along the shorelines.

Every evening is unique and we can encounter other species of birds and marine life not listed above.

Evening and Night Time: Summer weather on San Juan Island can shift drastically from daytime to nighttime. While early evening temperatures may stay in the 60’s F, once the sun sets temperatures can drop quickly into the low 50’s F. While evenings are typically calm, we do occasionally experience breezy conditions.

When you first see it you may think you’re looking at the stars in a dark night sky. When you realize it’s the water glowing, your world gets turned upside down. Kind of like when you first met your new love.

One of nature's most incredible phenomena, called bioluminescence, can be witnessed near Central Florida. Just an hour away from Orlando on the Space Coast is one of the best places in the world to witness bioluminescence. And the ultimate way to experience nature’s light show is gliding through the glowing waters after sunset on a guided bioluminescent kayaking tour. What a magical date night.

What Is Bioluminescence?

Bioluminescence is a chemical reaction used by marine plankton, called dinoflagellates, as a defense mechanism to ward off predators. When the water is disturbed, the non-toxic dinoflagellates emit a blue light that ripples through the water, much like fireflies on land. How lucky are we to view this glowing plankton so close to home?

If you’ve been to Pandora, World of Avatar in Disney’s Animal Kingdom at night, then you have a sense of what to expect. Disney has taken the concept of bioluminescence and added it to the theme park. But nothing beats seeing the real thing in nature.

Only active in the summer months, the best time to experience this water phenomenon is during the new moon phase, when the sky is at its darkest.

New Moon dates for the 2024 bioluminescent season are:

  • June 6, 2024
  • July 5, 2024
  • August 4, 2024
  • September 2, 2024

Bioluminescent Kayaking Tour Experience

One of the best ways to connect with your partner is to try new adventures. Outfitted with only a glow stick or a small battery-operated flashlight attached to your life vest, the first stroke of your paddle that lights up the water will undoubtedly elicit a feeling of glee. That’s only the first of many delights you’ll experience on your bioluminescent kayaking tour.

The darker the night sky, the more intense the blue of the bioluminescence becomes. Dip your hand into the river and when you take it out you’ll see dancing blue water spots slip away from your hand, as if you're holding magic. It is a very surreal feeling as you glide across the water in darkness with only the blue reaction in the water and the stars providing light. Be sure to look up. Chances are you’ll see the Milky Way more clearly than you ever have before.

If you have your camera or phone along, make sure it has waterproof protective gear and is set to a night mode or slow shutter speed.

Kayaking tours in Florida with bioluminescence

In the midst of nature with no light pollution, each tour is a little different. You may find yourself surrounded by playful dolphins or curious manatees. Imagine the dolphins swimming with their fins cutting through the water, creating a blue line coming straight toward you. My favorite thing is when dolphins exhale through their blowhole sending a neon blue mist into the night air.

Be aware, that it isn’t unusual for a mullet fish to jump into your kayak. Remember, you are in their playground. Just scoop it up and throw it back in the water and you’re good to go.

Your kayak tour guide will provide everything you need; the kayak, life vest and glow stick/flashlight. Dress comfortably, moisture-wicking clothing is a big help and helps make the life jacket feel more comfortable. You’ll want to bring bug spray, preferably the eco-friendly type, and waterproof bags to protect whatever you want to take into the kayak with you. Throw a towel or a change of clothes in your car. Though you're unlikely to tip over, you're bound to get a little wet from the water running down the paddle and into the boat.

Nearby Dinner Recommendations

Whether you want an early tour and a later dinner or a late tour and an earlier dinner, plan to enjoy a special meal with your date on the coast.

For something intimate, charming, and a little upscale consider The Pompano Grill which seats only 46 people. With white tablecloths for inside dining and its James Beard Award Winning Psychedelic Phish Burger, it’s a date-night favorite in Cocoa Beach that the locals love. Reservations are highly recommended. Dinner is served 5:30-8:30pm, so it's best for dinner before your bioluminescent kayaking tour.

If you’re more of the casual type and want to be right on the water, Coconuts on the Beach is iconic Cocoa Beach. With everything from burgers and wraps to fresh catch and filet mignon, you’re sure to find something to please both of you. For those with a sweet tooth, I recommend the Pineapple Creme Brulee. The kitchen is open until 10pm and the bar is open until 11pm.

Another casual spot to try is 4th Street Fillin' Station. The menu is casual, but offers flavorful options ranging from plant-based to full carnivore.

Outdoor bar at 4th Street Fillin Station Cocoa Beach area

For something less touristy than Coconuts and more lively than Pompano Grill, Fishlips Waterfront Bar and Grill is for you. As its name implies, Fishlips offers casual waterfront dining downstairs plus a covered patio, indoor sports bar, and sun deck with a tiki bar upstairs. Though it offers a fish-centric menu, there are also a few steak, chicken and pasta options.

Rather than driving back to Orlando late at night, why not spend the night on the Space Coast?

For a kitschy vibe, consider Guest Cottage at Cocoa Beach  located in downtown Cocoa Beach across the street from Slater Way Beach Access. Owners Jackie & David Simington created the two efficiency guest cottages 20 years ago and are onsite to this day to make sure your stay is perfect. Each cottage has its own private courtyard and one even has a koi pond. Off-street parking is an added bonus.

Alternatively, stay right on the beach at Beach Place Guest Houses . Don’t let the street view fool you. Once inside you’ll be delighted with one of the casual modern guest homes. Book one of the oceanfront suites for the most romantic view. Whether you choose oceanfront or oceanside, you’re only steps away from putting your toes in the water. End your evening in a hammock or chaise lounge under the stars before retreating to your room. This seaside inn is a great choice for a sunrise to sunset trip across Florida.

Cocoa Beach sunrise

On the way back to Orlando the next day, take a 10-minute detour and enjoy breakfast (served all day) at Jimmies . A one-of-a-kind locally owned diner, Jimmies was founded in 1985. Though Jimmy himself is no longer with us, his son continues to run the joint. Jimmies has the best biscuits and sausage gravy in the area and fabulous eggs Benedict. Southern favorites like grilled scrapple, shrimp and grits, and corned beef hash will take you back to your childhood if you grew up in the South.
