Purulia Ayodhya Pahar travel Plan

Our  Rajgir tour  was cancelled due to the delays in the train. We could not get the reservation on any other train at that time. So we searched for a local tour and got the Purulia Hills and Jungle tour.

It is so comfortable for us from  Kolk ata . The main point is that you don’t have to worry about confirming a train ticket for this place. A local train ticket, “Kolkata to Purulia”, can solve your problem. Kolkata to Ayodhya hills Purulia distance is 323 km via NH19 by road.

We can visit Purulia any time, but the best time to visit the Ayodhya Hills Purulia is spring. The ‘Palash flower’ bloomed over the hilltop; it looked excellent.

How to reach Ajodhya Hills from Kolkata by train – Our Holiday Story

We started our journey from Santragachi station. At 6:25 am, the  t rain whistled. Around 12:30 pm, four people, including my baby, reached Purulia station. Barrabhum station and Purulia station is the nearest station to Ayodhya Hill.

After that, we took a Toto car to the bus stand and hired an “ ambassador car ” for Ayodhya Hills in Purulia. Taking an Ambassador car is cost-effective because it’s running on diesel, and the rate is also low. You can also book a cab from the station, but it’s much less expensive, and they are only available with the train time.

All these cars were gone after the train passed from the station. A few buses also go to Ayodhya hilltop from the bus stand for 35 rupees, but it’s a few, and it’s a time-consuming matter. We reached our hotel around 3:15 p.m. and finished lunch during the journey.

We booked the Govt guest house (Malabika) at the Ayodhya hilltop. The place is neat and clean, and the room size is standard. The location is pleasant and safe because of a military base camp beside the hotel. Kolkata to Ajodhya Hill distance is 323 km.

1. Ayodhya hilltop – First day

We reach the Ayodhya hilltop via Sirkabad road. Purulia railway station to Ayodhya Pahar, the distance is approx 40 km. On the way, we visited the  Khairabera Dam .

We booked a car for the next day’s Purulia Ajodhya hill sightseeing in the evening. We met a few local people in the evening who were humble and hardworking. Around 8:00 pm we returned to the hotel, finished dinner, and went to sleep.

2. Sita Kund and Burburidham – Second day

The next day, we decided to hang out in the local places by walking. We visit “Sita Kund”, also called “Burburidham”, in the morning. It’s a 1 km walking distance from our lodge.

The legend here is that Sree Ramchandra had come to Ayodhya hill with Sita Devi to ‘Dandak ‘during the year of exile. To quench the thirst of Sita Devi, Sree Ram perched an arrow through the earth and extracted the water.

In time, it converted into a well. ‘ Disum Sendra ‘, the hunting festival of Purulia tribals, drinks the holy water from the Sita Kund and starts hunting in the jungle.

In the evening, we went to ‘ Kalipahar ‘, another hill beside the Ayodhya Hills. It is far higher than Ayodhya Hill. The view is also good, but accommodation is significantly less over there; after spending a few moments there, we went to the market, bought some snacks, and returned to the hotel.

The next day, we went for Purulia Ajodhya Pahar sightseeing. We left Ajodhya Hills In the morning, finishing our lunch at the roadside around 10 O’clock. Our first destination is Marble Lake.

3. Marble Lake Purulia Tour – 3rd day

Marble Lake is the prime tourist attraction in Purulia. When I went, I noticed that the road conditions were terrible. So it’s good to hire a big car. However, I feel adventurous on this travel. The marble lake area is exquisite, and the lake is in the middle of several hills.

The lake was created by cutting stones when constructing the upper and lower dams. This cultivation stopped when the water was coming out of the mountains. The water colour of the lake is black . We climbed a little to the mountain very carefully. From there, the view of the lake was excellent.

4. Bamni Falls

Second, we visited Bamni Falls. This place is also very classy for nature lovers, but the entire waterfalls are only seen from the bottom of the lake.

The stairs are very long and rough to get down.  Please reserve extra time whenever you visit Bamni Falls. The waterfall can be seen slightly when getting down at least 250 stairs, and I do not recommend it for senior citizens.

I step down roughly 500 steps in approx  800 steps . Below the Bamni Falls, a lake has flowed from the waterfall. Hills surround the lake, and it looks great.

5. Turga Dam

From here, we go to Turag Falls. A faraway Turag dam is there. We see these falls from above the mountain. You can have a pleasant time in the dam area.

6. Khairabera Dam Purulia

Another attraction is the Khairabera dam in Purulia. The dam is on the Khaira River . The blue water of Khairabera Lake and the dam surrounded by the hills of Ayodhya and shaded by trees is fantastic.

7. Charida village

After the Khairabera dam, we went to the Purulia  Chaw mask-making village. It is also called the Village of Masks. The mask of the Chow dance is made here. There are various kinds of masks made in this village.

You can watch the mask-making process and buy stuff from them. The famous artist Padmashree Gambhir Shing’s birthplace is Charida village.

charida mask village purulia

The Chhau dance of Bengal is very famous. This year, the Chhau dance mask will happen along with a fair in December month in this village.

The nearest railway station is Balarampur. From Balarampur, Bus and car service is available (time – 45 minutes).

Cheap shopping place in Purulia

‘ Charida ‘ village is the prime attraction for shopping. All are the famous handmade products made here. We bought four masks from there, and the souvenir starts from  Rs 10 only.

8. Lahoria Shiva Temple Purulia

After that, we went to a temple called Lahoria. Lahoria Shiva Temple is right next to the Lower Dam . The temple is very ancient and has historical values.

One day before the ‘ Chaitra Sankranti  ‘(a Hindu festival), a two-day fair-Laharia Baba’s ‘Gajan Mela’ takes place a few km from Ayodhya crossing. It’s also a popular tourist spot in Purulia.

lahoriye shib mandir and dam purulia

9. Lower Dam and Upper Dam Purulia

After visiting the temple, we saw the Lower and Upper Dam. It’s a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant. The water flowed from the upper dam to the lower dam, creating hydroelectricity.

A huge hydroelectricity plant is also there. It’s the main power plant of Purulia and an important pump storage project.

10. Mayur Pahar

While returning, we attend Mayur Pahar. The resonant sounds of the wind whistling through the pine, sal, and silk-cotton trees, the resonance of beating ‘Madal’ floating from afar, and the beauty of the  moonlight night enchant lovers of nature .

We stay a little while until sunset. The romance of the dim light is dazzling, and it is in my memory till now.

Go with IRCTC travel insurance policy

11. Murguma dam

We decided at the time of returning we would visit Murguma and Deulghata. So We completed the breakfast earlier and got out for Murguma. Purulia to Murguma is 45 km by car, and it’s a one-and-a-half-hour journey.

We came across different tribal villages and hills and reached Murguma.  Three hills surround the lake in Murguma . A dam covers the water.

Ayodhya Hills Purulia murguma dam west bengal

We walked a long way through the road on the dam. The chirping of the birds makes this hilly forest charming. You can feel the Intoxication smell of Mahua from the forest. A dam has been constructed for the Murguma River, and a water reservoir also has been developed.

Murguma looked like a photo from a distance. Palash Bitan Eco Resort or Bon Polashi Eco Hut is an excellent choice for Murguma hotels. Both are near to the dam. After spending one hour in Murguma, then we went towards Deulghata.

Ayodhya pahar Purulia Tour map

12. Deulghata

From Murguma to Deulghata is 15 km and takes half an hour. Purulia to Deulghata 27 km. Deulghata Temple is on the bank of the Kanshvati River. In the past, this temple complex was erected on the temple premises to promote Jainism . However, most temples are destroyed.

Deulghata Purulia

There are only two temples, and the  terracotta work  still exists in the temple. The idols here are found; they are ancient and made of black basalt stone. A fair is held here during the winter. However, the temples and the idols need to be preserved.

On returning, I saw the sunset from the train, and I got upset, and my Ayodhya hills finished the Purulia tour.

Pakhi Pahar  is the main attraction of  Matha , carved out of a 1000 ft high hill about 1 km from Bhuchungdih crossing, which is 3 km away from Matha on the way to Barabhum.

The entire hill seems to fly with spread wings. Different species of birds have their nests here. A group of sculptors is carving the mountain to discover something new.

This project, “Flight to Harmony”, was started by the individual effort of Kolkata artist Chitta Dey in 1992. It could be an additional point of interest with the Ayodhya Hills Purulia tour.

Demography wise the places looked more likely Biharinath/Baranti area. BTW, I liked the Marble Lake area in your description; this is something little apart than the usual village, lake, small-hills etc. The gov. lodge – can it be done through online, or you required to visit somewhere locally?

Very informative though!

Sujay singh is the manager of Niharika and malabika sarkari lodge in purulia.08001934058.I booked it through phone.

Baranti is another side of Purulia.. i am also preparing another guide for it. Go for murguma dam and stay atleast half a day.@santanu

Very useful TR – specially the break-up of rates that you have given. Plz let me know if you stayed at Murguma, esp. at the Palash Bitan or Bon Polashi. I plan to travel there in March and any feedback would be appreciated. Thx.

This is my second time in purulia. I stayed in murguma at Palash bitan.Tent is also available for 500 rs. For a single family the place is quite lonly. So I recommend stay with atleast 2 family or going with friends its ok. March is very hot over there so tent is not a good option. Sunset and sunrise from murguma is very classy. Koushik sinha palash bitan +919674222670.once you come back please let me know your experience.

Sorry Ruma ji – could not make the trip as yet due to unforeseen family circumstances. Hopefully, should be able to make it after the Pujas. Plan to stay at Bon Palashi.

Will certainly let you and your readers know about my experience @ Muruguma. BTW, a new 3-star resort has opened up at Ayodhya Hills – complete with cottages, bar, multi-cuisine restaurant, spa, banquet hall, swimming pool et al. While this is great news for some, it is bad news for people like me who feel that the place may soon be over-run by luxury travelers who prefer the bar and spa more than the sunset & sunrise. Entirely my personal feelings though………

Truely said Mir ji.. a real thums up for your comment. Wait for your new experience in purulia and staying murguma is memorable.

Dear Ruma , I planned to visit Purulia as well as Ayodhya Pahar by bike, with my family (my wife & son).According to your rout guide if I stay at Ayodhya Youth Hostel, is this good or not? I preferred to go on February, 2022

Stay in Murguma if you enjoy the nature. Niharika or Malabika is a good option.

Hello dear, You have really explained clearly. Just want to know one thing, are frequent bus services from ayodhya to purulia station also available? I, alongwith my husband and his colleagues have booked our stays at Hill top resort but due to some unavoidable circumstances, I and my husband have to leave a day early, leaving my other co- travellers there. So i was planning to book a cab from Ayodhya to Purulia station but they are charging 1800/- for that. So i wish to know if buses from Ayodhya to Purulia station are available and timings of those buses. Thanks in anticipation.

First, you need to come to Purulia bus station by toto from the station. Only local bus service is available but ist not frequent. Around 1 hour to 1.5 intervals.

HOW TO PLAN A PURULIA TOUR?

While planning a Purulia tour, tourists must consider the two major tourist circuits in Purulia district.

  •  Ajodhya Pahar Baghmundi tourist circuit
  • Garpanchokot Baranti Panchet tourist circuit

Both the tourist circuit can be covered in a single tour plan or can be visited separately in a relaxed manner. Both the tourist circuit under purulia tourism offers a blend of mesmerizing landscapes and ancient historical architectures.

WHICH ARE THE TOP PLACES TO VISIT IN PURULIA?

Two major tourist circuits of Purulia covers almost all the alluring scenic spots under Purulia tourism.

A. Ajodhya Pahar or Ayodhya hills circuit under Purulia Tourism

The most popular tourist circuit is the Ajodhya Pahar Baghmundi tourist circuit since it covers a variety of landscape, towering hills, dams, falls and lush green forest. Popular destinations under Ajodhya pahar or Ayodhya hill tourist circuits are as below

purulia tourist spot map

Ajodhya Pahar

Ajodhya Pahar is the main attraction among all the tourist spots in Purulia. An extended part of the Eastern Ghats range, Ajodhya Pahar is a hill of medium height with tableland on top. Belonging to the Dalma Hill range, the highest peak of Ayodhya Pahar is Gorgaburu. The hill is within the vast area of Chota Nagpur Plateau and forms its lowest step. It is a woody hill with picturesque beauty. The cacophony of birds will accompany you along your trail to the Ayodhya Hills through the forested path. Legend has it that this hill was visited by Lord Rama and Sita during their exile. The vast spread of greenery and serpentine roads are a treat to the eyes. With a height of mere 712 metres, it is one of the most favourite nearby weekend destinations from Kolkata. A visit to the Ajodhya Pahar will certainly make you fall in love with Purulia all over.

 Muruguma Dam

Not far from Ajodhya Pahar in Purulia, there is another tourist spot in Purulia rich in natural beauty awaiting your amazement. Muruguma Dam. Built over a small tributary of the river Kangsabati, this place is serenity well-defined. A whiff of fresh air coming every second from the water body is sure to make you feel relaxed on your next trip to Purulia. Fill your pollution-laden lungs with freshness and enjoy the not-so-distant views of the Ayodhya Pahar. The clean water of the dam, greenery around the place and hints of the characteristic red soil- all make the tourist spot in Purulia worth visiting.

Bamni Falls

Purulia, an otherwise dry district of West Bengal, has wonders in store for you as you visit Bamni Falls. While you experience the dry, stony soil of Purulia, the hint of moisture in the air coming along with the fresh smell of spruce trees fills up your senses as you visit the falls. The water here steps down without giving you any visual indication of erosion. Stand close to it and droplets of water will drench you like the pitter-patter of rain. Looking for a place to sit and think of nothing and letting go of all the worldly worries? Look no further beyond Bamni falls, the stunning tourist spot in Purulia.

Purulia Tourist Spot

Another location with breathtaking beauty within the vicinity of Ajodhya Pahar in Purulia is the Upper Water Dam. It is one of the major sightseeing in Purulia and without giving it a visit your Purulia tour will be incomplete. It is mainly a project for generating hydroelectricity. It is also known by the name of PPSP or Purulia Pump Storage Project. The artificially constructed dam brings freshness to the dry surface of Purulia. Watching the sunrise and sunset from this location is nothing short of an extravagant experience. The vast open area does not barricade the sky and thus when the colours of sunrise and sunset spread across the sky, you are simply left awestruck. The Upper Dam area is surrounded by Sal forest which adds to the lush green beauty of the Purulia tourist spots.

It is another rock-filled dam under the PPSP project. Located downhill from the upper dam, it gets its name, Lower Dam. The scenic beauty and natural environment are not much different from the upper dam. But at the same time, Purulia has wonders hidden in every turn. You can always discover the lower dam in its unique view when you visit it. The low reservoir of water provides an excellent opportunity to enjoy the natural view of the surrounding without any barrier in front of your eyes. The reflection of the sky on the clear water will make you want to touch it and feel it.

If you have a special fondness for local artisans and their artefacts which are famous across the globe, Charidah is the place you must include in your Purulia tour plan. Internationally acclaimed Chhau martial dance uses masks of various looks, sizes and shapes and Charidah is the home to these masks and the artisans who make them. While you get to interact with more than 250 artisans involved in mask-making, you may come across a few who have been awarded nationally too, acknowledging their effort. Be mesmerised by the beautiful creation and you can buy these artefacts directly from the makers at an excitingly affordable price. Charida village is a bright spot in the Purulia tourist map for its contribution to the art to make Purulia tourism more attractive and vibrant.

A quick step back in history is what Deulghta is all about. Ruins of temples built in the times of the Sen and the Pal emperors bear the evidence of rich heritage, improved expertise in designing and building and the immense creativity of the artisans. The nearby Kansai River adds to the stucco decoration and authentic architectural styles. Even though the temples have endured the wrath of time, the skilled artistry is still evident on the temple body and the idols. One must include Deulghata in their Purulia tour plan to know the history of Purulia from ancient times.

Famously known for the hills by the same name, Baghmundi is actually a small town in Purulia developed as a part of the community development programme. It is a small area with all the necessities in the vicinity. There are many approaches to visit Ayodhya Pahar, one can visit Ajodhya Pahar through Baghmundi situated at the foothills of Ayodhya Pahar. The rainy season, winter and spring are three times of the year when this area thrives with natural beauty. A simple aimless stroll through Baghmundi can enrich you with the magnificent beauty of nature. Hills, forests, waterfalls- nature has its basket full and is awaiting your arrival.

Ajodhya Pahar Tea Garden

Spread across 20 acres of land on the slopes of Ajodhya and other areas, the tea garden was an initiative undertaken by the Government of West Bengal. Once a beautiful Purulia tourist spot with a lush green cover of tea saplings, this project now needs a fresh lease of life. The administration is working towards it. Khairabera dam

Yet another water body in the trail of Purulia, the Khairabera dam is located amidst hills and forests. It is mainly an irrigation dam. Two hills on two sides adorn the dam which is around 1.5 km long. The calmness of the location is only disturbed by the cacophony of birds. You can see various fishes swimming in the clear water. A trek of a few miles will bring you to Machhkanda falls, a small waterfall hidden in the greenery of the forest. Khairabera dam is a must-visit place for sightseeing in Ajodhya hill and forest reserve area.

My Trip to Ayodhya Hills (অযোধ্যা পাহাড়) in purulia

We reached Ayodhya hilltop around 10 in the morning. After checking in our resort, we rest for a couple of hours, followed by lunch. Around 2 pm, we headed towards Sita Kund, the first destination of our sightseeing tour.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 1 km )

Sita Kund (Bengali: সীতা কুন্ড) is a small shallow water body in Bagandi village where cold water bubbles from the white sand base. What makes this place more interesting is the mythological story attached to it.

The Kund was said to be created by Rama – The King when he pierced the earth soil crust with his arrow to create a fountain to quench his wife’s thirst, Sita. They came there during their exile, so this place is called Ayodhya Hills, as believed by some locals. The local people have constructed a small temple worshipping Rama just 500 meters away from the Sita Kund.

Every year in the Bengali month of Baisakh, during full moon hunting festival is held at the Ayodhya Hills. This festival is like a fair which is also locally called Disum Sendra (শিকার পরব). The local tribals believe that young boys attain adulthood during this festival. They drink water from Sita Kund before groups of young men set out for their hunting adventure.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 2 km )

Mayur Pahat (Peacock Hill) is 605 meter in height from sea level and offers a panoramic view of the entire region of Ayodhya hills. It is a popular picnic spot for locals and has a small temple at the hilltop.

Durga Bera / Tarpania Lake / Marble Lake

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 7 km )

Marble Lake was created by extracting hard rocks used to construct the PPSP dam. It is situated in Tarpania village and also called Tarpania Lake. You can see scattered rocks and boulders all around the lake.

One road goes towards the lake, and another goes up towards the hill from where you can get a panoramic view of the lake. You can spend some time in the small shacks in the parking lot and enjoy a cup of tea while having a chat with locals.

Image of Tarpania Lake or Marble Lake on our trip to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 19 km )

Murguma Lake was our last destination on Day 1. It is one of the most beautiful lakes in Purulia. Surrounded by hills on all three sides, the best time to visit this place is during sunset.

This lake comes on the way to Jhalda from Ayodhya hilltop. Muruguma Lake was constructed by creating a dam over Girgiri Nala, a rivulet of the Kansai river.

A few basic accommodations are available near Murguma dam, where you can stay for uninterrupted living in synergy with the tranquil nature. You can hike to nearby hillocks for a panoramic view of the lake. Or you can go to a nearby village for a glimpse of tribal life.

Begunkodar is another small village situated at a distance of 5 km from Murguma Lake to Jhalda. You can visit the popular “ghost station” of Begunkodar , which locals believe to be a place of paranormal activities. The Historic Thakurbari and Rashmancha in Begunkodor is preserved by the Archeological department of West Bengal and visited by thousands of tourists every year.

Image of Murguma Lake during sunset is spectacular. This is one of the most beautiful lakes in Purulia.

On day 2, we visited places around Baghmundi and Balarampur in a full day trip.

( Distance from Ajodhya hilltop – Upper Dam is 6km and the Lower Dam is 11 km )

Purulia Pumped Storage Project (PPSP) is a Hydel Power Project in Ayodhya Hills and one of the largest Pumped Storage Plants of India, which starts functioning in the year 2008. The main structure of this project is two rock-fill dams created to store water. These are called Upper Dam and Lower Dam. They are situated in Baghmundi block and will be on the way to Baghmundi from Ayodhya hilltop.

You can also visit Lohria Dam and Turga dam right at the foothills of PPSP dams. Lohria Shiv Temple is another place where tourists often pay a visit while going to Baghmundi.

Charidah Village

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 16 km )

Charidah is the village of Chau mask makers . The colourful and vibrant masks portraying animal faces or characters from the epics are made by hundreds of families from this village. There are many roadside workshops of artists where tourists can witness the tedious task of making these masks. Tourists can also purchase these masks directly from these workshops.

The tradition of Chau mask-making started in Charida about 150 years back during the rule of King Madan Mohan Singh Deo of Baghmundi. It was popularised by Gambhir Singh Mura, who was a famous Chau dancer and Padmasree awardee. The Chhau mask of Purulia is registered in the List of Geographical Indications in India .

Read more: A Visit to Charida – The Village of Chau Mask Makers

Chau mask makers categorised these masks into two types – masks used for Chau Dance and masks used for home decors. Each mask takes between two to seven days to be completed and involves five elaborate processes. Charidah can be rightly termed as an ‘artisans’ village’ as around 500 families earn their livelihood by making these masks.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 25 km)

Khairabera Lake is another pristine lake at the foot of Chamtaburu Hill built as a part of Khairabera Irrigation Dam. The narrow road goes through the beautiful villages of Bukadi and Barda, with agricultural lands on both sides.

There is one resort beside this lake where one can stay in a cottage or a tent. Nature walk, hiking, kayaking, angling in the lake and cycling along the village roads are some activities offered by this resort.

Image of Khairabera Dam which is at the foothills of Ayodhya Hills in Purulia.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 20 km )

Matha Forest is on the way to Balarampur. Matha Conserved Forest is at the foothill of Mathaburu (Matha Hill) and is popular among campers and climbers. WBFDC bungalow is a good place to stay here.

Sonakupi village is at the foothill of Kukuburu hill and has a beautiful camping facility to enjoy the ardent nature.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 27 km )

“Murraburu hill” is popularly known as Pakhi Pahar . The reason for being called so is the sculpture of different birds chiselled over the rock face of Murraburu hill by a motivated veteran sculptor Chitta Dey and his team.

For the past three decades, this man had been relentlessly sculpting birds’ images over this hillock, making it a giant piece of bas relief. It becomes a popular tourist attraction nowadays. He started with few local youths by training them in rock sculpture and rock painting and running a school to educate and train more youths to make a sustainable way of living.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 35 km )

Pardi Dam was our last destination for Day 2. The road goes through Pardi village and ends at Pardi Dam, another irrigation dam built on the Kathaljhuri river.

Hills surround this dam on three sides, and the reflection of the hills over the calm water of the Pardi Lake just before the day ends purely magical. Pardi Dam is one of the best secret tourist destinations on your trip to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia.

Pardi Dam is a hidden gem in Balarampur block in Purulia. It is a small dam over Kathaljhuri river.

Today we woke up at 4:30 and started our journey to Usuldungri for sunrise. Thereafter we went to Bamni Falls and Turga Falls, followed by a visit to the nearby villages. Lastly, we went to Deulghata to see the twelfth-century temples while driving back to Purulia.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 12 km )

The sunrise from Usuldungri was one of the best sunrises I had ever experienced in my life. There is one watchtower at the top of this hill from where you can get an unforgettable view of Ayodhya Pahar when the dawn breaks.

The best place to witness a magical sunrise on a trip to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia is Usuldungri which is 12 km away from Ajodhya hilltop.

In the midst of a forest, we saw a gush of silky smooth water cascade coming down along the rock face. To reach Bamni falls , the most spectacular of all the waterfalls we saw on our trip to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia, we had to descend almost 100 stairs from the main road.

It is one of the most visited places by locals also. The stairs go down between the long rows of small souvenir shops, making it apparent how popular this place is. The best time to visit this waterfall is during the monsoon when it is full of water.

Image of Bamni waterfalls amidst forest in Ayodhya Pahar in Purulia.

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 10 km )

Turga Falls is another beautiful waterfall that joins Turga Dam eventually. One has to hike down from the main road to reach this waterfall. The path was not so well laid like Bamni Falls, but the effort to reach there was worth doing.

The water is clean, pure and unpolluted. It flows swiftly over weathered rocks and thick moss. Below the bed of rocks lies a small pool. Turga Falls comes on your way to Bagmundi from Ayodhya Pahar.

Deulghata Temples

( Distance from Ajodhya hill top – 33 km )

Deulghata is another secret destination in Purulia. It has a connection to the Jain settlement in Bengal during the Sena Empire in the 11th and 12th centuries. At that time, approximately 15 temples were built with bricks in traditional “Rekh Deul” architecture (a tall building with a shape of sugarloaf, looking like a Shikhara covering and protecting the sanctum or Garbhagriha). Examples of such dilapidated deuls are still standing in some other parts of Bengal.

Read more: Deulghata Temples in Purulia

In 1864–65, E.T. Dalton, the Commissioner of Chhotanagpur, visited this place and found three large temples in the midst of the ruins of many more on the bank of the Kansai river. Today only two brick temples remained in Deulghata; 3rd one collapsed in 2002. The stucco decoration over the remaining two deuls is in bad shape and needs immediate preservation.

Trekking / Rock climbing in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

Mathaburu (Matha Hill) is very popular among trekkers and rock climbers. Many trekkers associations organise basic rock climbing courses here for beginners. Gajaburu is another hillock where one can go for a basic rock-climbing opportunity from Sirkabad, the base camp for this trekking route.

Trekking to “Dowry Khal” is another popular destination among hikers and trekkers. It is a 4-6 hours round trip hike in Ayodhya Hills. Dowry Khal is the originating place of the Shobha river, a tributary of Subarnarekha.

Angling in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

Khairabera Lake and Tarpania Lake (Marble Lake) are two places where you can go fishing if you stay in the Ayodhya hills. Murguma lake is also popular for fishing. If you plan to stay in Kushal Palli Resort in Ayodha Pahar, there is a large pond inside the resort property where you can try your fishing skill.

Nature Camp in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় )in Purulia

Matha is a popular place for nature camping. In winter, many organisations arrange nature camps for young children in the foothills of Ayodhya Pahar.

Village Tour in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

Charida is famous for Chau mask making. Apart from that, there are numerous tribal villages in Ayodhya Hills where you can visit tribal lifestyles.

You can stop in small villages on your way to Murguma Lake or take a leisure walk through Usuldungri village after watching the majestic sunrise in Ayodhya Hills. You can stay in Digardi village Homestay to experience rural life. If you are interested in seeing a traditional village market, you can go to “Begunkodar Hat”, which is 5 km ahead of Murguma Lake.

Chau Dance in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

Chau Dance is a traditional dance form mixed with martial art and acrobatic movements originating in the eastern part of India. Three types of this dance form are practised in three different districts of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. In 2010 the Chhau dance was inscribed in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity .

In West Bengal, Purulia is the only district where Chhau dance is practised. They are usually performed around a theme, based on epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata and other folklores. The use of large masks and vibrant costumes is an exclusive characteristic of the Purulia Chhau Dance .

Music plays an important role to set the mood of this open stage drama. Three main types of folk instruments accompany these performances – Dhol, Shehnai and Dhamsa. Musicians start performing live music 20-30 minutes before the actual dance to set the tune.

Mahisasurmardini is the most common story that Purulia Chau dancers enact. The stories usually are chosen on common propaganda – the power of gods always rising above the power of demons. Each performance usually lasts from 40 minutes to 1 hour. Many acrobatic movements dominate every performance – free swing in the air, side twist, rolling forward and backwards and rampant jumping.

Chau Dance of Purulia is a famous dance form which is enacted on a theme based on Hindu mythological stories. Use of large masks is an integral part of Chau Dance.

They are held In the villages of Purulia, usually on open grounds, during Gajan Festival in Mid-April or other fairs and festivals. For the last few years, the Government of West Bengal is organising Chau-Jhumur Festival in December to encourage more tourists to visit Purulia and promote this indigenous art form in front of a global audience.

Festivals in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

The villages of Purulia celebrates many festivals, some of which are specific to one particular tribe. Some of the most prominent and indigenous festivals that are celebrated by the tribes in Purulia are –

  • Gajan or Charak Puja – This is celebrated from March to May-end in different parts of the Purulia district.
  • Disum Sendra or Sikar Parab – It is a hunting festival celebrated by the Santhal community in the Ayodhya Hills areas. This festival is held in April.
  • Bandhna Parab – It is celebrated by most tribes in Purulia. Animals used for farming are worshipped as the god during this festival. Tribal families paint their houses with vibrant colours during this time. This festival is held in October/ November.
  • Tushu Parab – This is celebrated by rural women who share their joy, sorrow and experiences with Tusurani (an imaginary character) by making folk songs. Tushu Parab is held during December every year.

Weather in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ), Purulia

Winter is the best time to visit Ayodhya Hills in Purulia. The days are sunny with pleasant temperature, but the nights can be shivering cold. It would be best if you had heavy woollens to counter that.

Being the peak season, hotel prices also shoot up during winter. Trekking, rock climbing, nature camping – all these activities increase from November to January. Chau-Jhumur Festival is also celebrated every year during the month of December.

Monsoon in Purulia lasts from July to September. During this time of the year, days are usually hot and humid, while nights are pleasant and cold. Though rain can hamper your sightseeing, the Ayodhya Pahar look magical during this time.

An image from inside of a car when it was raining incessantly during our trip to Ayodhya Hills in Purulia.

Hills are covered with shades of green; lakes are full of water, and waterfalls become alive. Trekking and hiking are not recommended during this time, though. Chata Parab and Bhadu are celebrated in this region in the month of September every year.

Summer in Purulia can be soaring with temperature, particularly during the daytime. Nights can be pleasant, though. It is better to avoid travel here in May and June.

During Spring (March and April), you can visit Ayodhya Hills. Although the weather in Ayodhya Pahar is hot and humid, this is also the best time to see Palash in full bloom. Hotel deals are a steal too. But you have to take precautions to save yourself from the mid-day heat. Use cap and sunglass and drink lots of water to maintain adequate hydration.

Image of blooming Palash (Butea monosperma) whcih is a very common species seen in the western districts of West Bengal particularly Bankura, Birbhum and Purulia. Here the bloomin of Palash Flower is linked with the onset of spring season, especially through the poems and songs of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore who compared these deep orange flame-shaped flowers like a fire of the jungle.

Accommodation in Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ), Purulia

You can stay in many places in and around Ayodhya Hills to complete your trip to this circuit. You can stay in Ayodhya hilltop, in the plains of Baghmundi or Jhalda and beside Murguma Lake or Khairabera Dam. For a rustic village experience, you can stay at Digardi village or in Sonakupi village also. If you are interested in trekking and nature camping, I suggest staying near Mathaburu (Matha Hill).

During peak season and festivals like Durgapuja, Christmas and Holi, you may find all hotels and resorts in the above locations are completely booked. In that scenario, you can stay at Purulia Town and tour Ajodhya Hill from there.

Ayodhya Hilltop Hotels and Resort

There are many lodges and hotels in the Ayodhya Pahar circuit, but they are scattered in different locations. You can book accommodation in any of these places and start exploring other sightseeing points by hiring a private cab. But you must book your accommodation first during the Palash-bloom season before finalising your Ayodhya Hills tour plan.

  • Kushal Palli Resort – It is the best accommodation available on Ayodhya hilltop at present. It’s a 4-star resort with beautiful cottages, a swimming pool, a big lawn and a pond in the backwards for fishing and boating. The only thing that I missed there was authentic Bengali cuisine which they should look after.
  • Hotel Akash Hilltop – Another decent hotel in Ayodhya hilltop with the best view rooms and nice Bengali food.
  • CADC Lodge: Niharika/Malabika – These are two lodges on the Ayodhya hilltop, easily accessible from the main market area. Both of them are located in the same compound. It has an in-house restaurant and lots of open space. Both of these facilities are run by CADC (West Bengal Comprehensive Area Development Corporation).
  • Youth Hostel – This is another nice place to stay, especially for budget travellers. It is a little away from the main market and does not has a restaurant inside the hostel.

How to Reach Ayodhya Hills ( অযোধ্যা পাহাড় ) in Purulia

Ayodhya hills can be accessed from three sides – Sirkabad, Baghmundi and Jhalda. The nearest stations to reach these three places are Purulia junction, Barabhum and Muri junction, respectively.

The best way to reach Ayodhya hilltop would be to get a cab from Purulia station or a bus from Purulia bus terminus. For Matha, Baghmundi and Khairabera, you should get down at Barabhum station and hire a car from there. And if you are staying at Murguma or Jhalda, then you can also get down at Muri Junction and hire a car from there.

But always remember, all the sightseeing places are merely 20-30 km apart from each other, by maximum distance, and you can easily access them from any of the above three stations. If you are finding it difficult to get a booking to one particular station, which is quite common during peak season, try your luck to get a booking to any of the other two stations.

You may also hop on any train going to Jamshedpur, which is 3 hours drive from Ayodhya hills.

Palash Utsav

The Murugama Dam is constructed on the Saharajhore River, the tributary of the Kangsabati River in West Bengal, India.

The dam lies in the foothills of Ajodhya hill, Purulia District of West Bengal. This area is inhabited by tribal people, especially the Santal community. Nestled in the heart of the dense forest this place happens to be a popular tourist spot. Our Ajodhya Hill tour package includes sightseeing of this beautiful place.

Our Ajodhya hill tour to Mayur Hill can bring immense joy to your soul. The spectacular view of the whole Ajodhya hills is everything you have craved for.

Yogini Cave located in the deep forest has been associated with several mythological stories. Myth has it that when Sati (the incarnation of goddess Durga) died, her soul stayed inside this cave before she was reborn as Parvati and finally tied the knot with Lord Shiva .

To guard her against her the demon Shukra , who would often come to harm her in the disguise of snakes, Lord Shiva remained in disguise as a ‘Mayur’ (peacock) near the cave. Due to this incident, the mountain got its name ‘ Mayur Pahar '.

This is one of the most beautiful visiting places in Purulia. It lies on the way to Baghmundi from Ayodhya. It lies close to the village of Barria . The waterfall lies around 500 steps down the main road, away from the hustle and bustle of town. The steps are made of concrete halfway down the road.

The falls, cascading down the mountain bifurcates into two different streams, looking like a twin fall at the midway. If you walk down the bottom of the midway fall, you will enjoy a great view.

Scattered with boulders and surrounded by forest, this place has a wild beauty. One can sit on the big boulders and relax for a while. However stones being slippery, one must be very careful. Further down the midway, there is no concrete carpet, the steps gradually change into big rocks and mud. The path unwinds into green bushes while moving down the path, it gives a unique experience like trekking in the Jungle. The steps being slippery and narrow, elderly people are advised not to visit this fall.

When you finally reach the very bottom of the magnificent fall, you will see how water flowing down from the top strikes at the very bottom, creating a magical beauty. A partial view of the lower dam can be seen. Sit here for a while enjoying the purity of nature, the roar of this magnificent fall, the quietness of the forest.

It is advised to carry some water with you, as you can get thirsty while descending and ascending the pathway. However, make sure you don’t litter plastic water bottles and hamper the ecosystem there.

It is one of the famous Historical places of Purulia, it is almost 60 km away from Purulia town. The ruins of Panchakote Palace have been a witness of the infamous Bargi attack during the 18th Century.

Garh Panchakot is a hidden gem. The history of this place dates back to 90 AD. It is situated by Panchet Lake along the slopes of Panchet Hill in the Purulia district of West Bengal.

The Rajas of Panchkot were the Singh Deo dynasty . The city holds the sole testimony of history. It has witnessed a lot.

Bargi's attack had reduced this city to ruins. During the attack king’s guards were killed. They destroyed and plundered the palace. It is said that all 17 wives of the king chose to commit suicide in the nearby well during the attack. Garh Panchkot is laid into ruins since then This place is isolated from the original town.

Apart from the occasional chirping of a bird, the silence here is profound. Being an Ancient historical heritage, this place is a part of our Purulia tour plan .

It is said that Damodar Sekhar established Panchkot Raj probably during the early 90 AD along with the help of Sardars of Jhalda . Eventually, he expanded his kingdom over several other Parganas.

The main five (Panch) Clans(that) of the kingdom is called Panchkhot . Panchkot is also called Panchet , it was originally a part of ancient Kindom named Raj chakla Panchkot . Panchakot Raj was probably a part of the Tilakampa Kingdom . Telkupi was the capital of Tilakampa Kingdom at that time.

A village under Raghunathpur police station at Garpanchkot ( Garh Panchkot ), drowned with the construction of Panchet Dam. The temples here have unique architectural styles. One of them is ' Pancharatna ' others like ' Jor-Bangla ' type and more than one 'Pirha' type temples made of stone are found here.

The Pancharatna temple holds the exotic beauty of pre-Islamic period Terracotta work , crafted on its arches and pillars. About 500 meters away from the Garhp anchkot, upward towards the hill, lies a perennial spring called ‘Dhara’.It is channeled through a ‘cow mouth’ made of stone.

The Ajodhya Hill and Forest Reserve Area is home to the magnificent Ajodhya Hills in the Purulia district of West Bengal .

ayodhya purulia tourism

It is a part of the Dalma Hills and extended part of Eastern Ghats range. The highest peak of Ajodhya Hills is Chemtaburu. The nearby populated town area is Bagmundi. Distance from Kolkata is 332 km.

This area has become popular with tourists. Winter gets maximum tourists, with a few tourists visiting the other months for various tourism interests, like trekking nature trails, to enjoy the rains and the cultural diversity. It's a popular place for young mountaineers to learn the basic and advance course in rock climbing.

The area is a mix of hills with mid dense forest; in some places the forest is deep. It is part of Dalma Forest and part of the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Hills are rocky and surrounding plan lands are mixed boulder zone with steep landscape. Hillocks range from few hundred feet up to around 2,800   ft (850   m) . There are 9 dams and water reservoirs in and around the hill region. Few water streams and 3 waterfalls get water during the rains and keep flowing through the winter till the summer heat dries them up.

Flora and fauna

Mostly Sal and Segun forest mixed with species like Palash, Kusum, Mahua, Neem, Kend etc. Plants like Aswagandha, Satmuli, and Vrigoraj, Haritaki, Amla, Bahera, Karanj, Neem, Bamboo, Kendu etc. are commonly found. 14 species of orchids are found there.

There are 39 species of mammals (5 in Schedule - I: Pangolin, wolf, leopard cub, leopard, elephant), 9 species of amphibians, 27 species of fish, 9 species of mollusks. The most interesting is the Madras tree shrew, found on the top hills of this ecosystem and nowhere else in West Bengal. Ajodhya hill ecosystem hosts few numbers of mega-mammals like elephant. Though major elephant habitat is engulfed by PPSP, in 2018 the number of such resident elephants was considered to be 8-10. Seasonally, herds of elephant from nearby Jharkhand forest take shelter in this area for days together in different seasons of the year.

Besides, it's a place of various species of birds and snakes.

Depending on the route, the Ajodhya Hills are about 30–40   km (19–25   mi) from Purulia town.
