The Spirituality of Hajj: ‘Arafah

After the sunrise of the 9 th of Dhul Hijjah pilgrims depart for ‘Arafah where they remain until sunset. ‘Arafah is a large plain to the south-east of Makkah with its legal boundaries clearly defined, and of the three: ‘Arafah, Muzdalifah and Mina , ‘Arafah is the farthest point from Makkah.

There pilgrims pray the Zuhr (noon) and ‘Asr (afternoon) prayers in congregation, shortening and combining them during the time of the former. After the prayers, imam gives khutbah (sermon), which is supposed be listened to by pilgrims.

That is basically all a pilgrim is expected to do while at ‘Arafah. His main job is just to be there, and to stand (remain) until the end . Hence, this part of Hajj is called “al-wuquf bi ‘Arafah” (standing at ‘Arafah). Sometimes it is referred to as the day of ‘Arafah (yawm ‘arafah), reminding of the time and place that outline and distinguish the rite.

Hajj is Arafah

The wonders of the day of arafah.

It seems to be little and simple, but ‘Arafah is the most important aspect of Hajj. It is its focal point and its nucleus. It is its microcosm. So much so that the validity of the rest of Hajj rites depends on the validity of what goes on at ‘Arafah.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

" title="Advertise and Market to Muslims" target="_blank">Ads by Muslim Ad Network

“Hajj is ‘Arafah, Hajj is ‘Arafah, Hajj is ‘Arafah.” [1]

He also said that all of ‘Arafah is the place of standing (mawqif, that is, the place of wuquf). [2] This means that a person who does not come to and stand at ‘Arafah even for a little while, misses Hajj, irrespective of what he does afterwards and elsewhere. Missing ‘Arafah cannot be expiated, nor its boons compensated.

The night after standing at ‘Arafah – called the night of Muzdalifah , because people move to Muzdalifah at that time – is additionally offered as part of concession. The Prophet (Peace be upon him) said:

“Hajj is ‘Arafah. Whoever catches up with the night of ‘Arafah before dawn comes on the night of Muzdalifah his Hajj is complete.” [3]

If a person does not accomplish even that, he misses Hajj.

‘Arafah (also ‘Arafat) as a geographical location and ‘Arafah as a Hajj rite are derived from the root word “‘arafa” which means “to come to know”, “to learn”, “to acquaint oneself with”, “to become aware of by information or from observation” and “to familiarize oneself with”. Thus, ‘Arafah is a place, process and experience of learning, being acquainted and aware, on the basis of which a person develops new practices and new behavioural norms.

Meanings of Arafah

The best day of the year is here.

Scholars differ as to the reasons ‘Arafah is so called. By and large, it is held that ‘Arafah got its name because at it, droves of people get to know each other and from each other; because Ibrahim was on a tour of the holy places with the angel Gabriel (Jibril), who taught him the manasik (rituals) of Hajj, and was asked by the latter on a regular basis: Do you know (now), do you know (a’arafta, a’arafta?), to which Ibrahim would reply: I know, I know (‘araftu, ‘araftu); and because Prophet Adam and his wife Hawwa’, after they had been sent from Paradise to different earthly locations, met at ‘Arafah, so it was there that he found and knew her (‘arafaha) and she found and knew him (‘arafathu).

Some say that when Ibrahim reached ‘Arafah, as part of his learning tour with the angel Gabriel (Jibril), he said: ‘araftu (I know this place) – because he had come to that area before. And so, the place was called ‘Arafah.

However, the authenticity of the accounts involving Prophets Adam and Ibrahim, which are perhaps most prevalent possibilities, are seriously questioned. Neither the Qur’an nor the trustworthy Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) says anything about the matter. There are several hadiths of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that touch on the issue at hand, but they are very weak hadiths, either in relation to their contents or the chains of narrators.

“The only saheeh reports about this matter are the words of some of the salaf, most of which are taken from the knowledge of the people of the Book which were transmitted during their time. Such reports cannot be relied upon or trusted, and it is not permissible to believe in what they mention of things concerning which our religion is silent. Rather they may be narrated for the purpose of story-telling only.” [4]

At any rate, all indications are that the main ontological rationale for ‘Arafah is connected with the field of learning, scholarship and quality culture (ma’rifah) – besides its spiritual abundance . It is noteworthy that ‘Arafah is not about knowledge per se (‘ilm) and wisdom (hikmah); these are different domains which nevertheless stem from the former.

Knowledge and wisdom may be beyond the reach of many people, and may yet be the items of exclusive clubs, but learning, awareness and familiarity are inclusive fields, and their membership and involvement are open to each and every individual. In consequence, a person may not be knowledgeable (in the scholarly or academic sense of the word) and wise, but should be sufficiently learned, educated, informed, skilled and cultured. The former is the collective duty in Islam, but the latter is the duty of each member of the Muslim ummah (community).

Arafah: A Symbol of Inclusiveness

How hajj promotes peace and unity.

‘Arafah is a symbol of entirety and all-inclusiveness. Everybody must be there at the same time and at the same place, looking the same, doing the same things and seeking to obtain the same goals . ‘Arafah, it follows, is an image of existence at large and its providential make-up. It is a miniature copy of humanity and its kismet. Yet it is the small-scale version of the Muslim ummah and its venerable place in the universe, which nevertheless exists in a regulated moment of time and a controlled chunk of space.

Therefore, ‘Arafah is about that which concerns everybody and which is within everybody’s grasp. Everybody can experience ‘Arafah – and by extension whole Hajj. Although people’s experiences and appreciations will definitely vary, they are all sound and applicable nonetheless. What is required is to be sincere, faithful and dedicated; which is to say, to be there physically, spiritually and emotionally .

Not being there with the total being and in the total life form is the problem. If a person’s physical absence from ‘Arafah invalidates his Hajj, so do his emotional and spiritual states affect the outcome. They may not nullify his plain physical exertions easily, but, certainly, can have a big say in the final assessments.

ARAFAT, Saudi Arabia (AP) — They came in the dark of night, in the thousands, to clamber up the rocky hill called Mount Arafat.

The mound southeast of Mecca is little known outside Islam. For non-Muslims, the circling of the Kaaba — the black, cube-shaped structure in the holy city — is the most arresting visual moment associated with the annual Hajj pilgrimage .

But for Muslims, it was Tuesday’s rite of praying at Arafat that represented the sum and substance of the Hajj.

The hill and the Day of Arafat, as the second day of the annual pilgrimage is called, hold immense significance in Islam. Arafat is mentioned in the Quran and it is where the Prophet Muhammad is said to have given his last sermon on his final Hajj. According to traditional sayings of the prophet, the Day of Arafat is the most sacred day of the year, when God draws near to the faithful and forgives their sins.

The moment of closeness to God makes it the most personally resonant part of the pilgrimage for many.

By 4 a.m. on Tuesday, the hill’s 70-meter-high (40 feet) summit was packed with believers. They climbed over its rough outcroppings, hauling their personal belongings with them and looking for an open spot. They sat in groups on its stone ledges and in the crevasses between the big boulders.

Some prayed, whispering their appeals to God with their palms raised open to the skies. Some pondered the landscape as the light of daybreak crept across it. Others raised their arms in the universal gesture of taking a selfie to commemorate the moment. Giant ring-shaped sprinklers sprayed mist trying to cool the pilgrims in the heat that rapidly spiraled to 45 degrees Celsius (113 degrees Fahrenheit).

As the day went on, the area surrounding Mount Arafat filled with some 1.8 million pilgrims. With no shade or breeze, people grabbed whatever they could find to protect themselves from the sun. Volunteers handed out umbrellas and drinks, and trucks packed with crates of bottled water added to the traffic chaos. Cellphones shut down in the heat, and pilgrims punctured water bottles and used them as portable sprinkler systems.

Still, they said they were overjoyed to be there despite the difficulties.

Khaled Al-Shannik, a 30-year-old shop owner from Jordan, said the Hajj was not Mecca. “The Hajj is Arafat,” he said, repeating one of the prophet’s sayings as he sat with his family on a big rock. “All Muslims wish to stand in the position that we are in now.”

Usman Arshad, a 26-year-old Pakistani student, walked nearly 3,000 miles (4,700 kilometers) for this moment. He was determined to reach the Hajj on foot. So he walked from his hometown of Okara in eastern Punjab province, across the breadth of his country and Iran. Then he took a boat to the United Arab Emirates and walked across the Arabian Peninsula to Mecca.

“There were challenges, and I fell a few times, but God helped me to get back up,” he said of the journey, which took six months altogether.

Arshad grew up reading about the Hajj and he knew people who had done it. He spoke to them about what to expect and how to prepare himself. He also did his own research, especially when it came to Arafat.

Arafat is crucial for pilgrims, he said, the moment to receive God’s forgiveness.

“This is no small thing. Everyone believes they are a sinner. If we are given this opportunity (to be forgiven) then we should take it,” he said. “Arafat is a blessed day, and I feel peace and wisdom being here.”

Pilgrims are required to pray at Arafat after midday and until immediately after sunset. They don’t have to be actually on the hill and can be anywhere on the grounds around it.

At noon, the giant crowds of pilgrims listened to a sermon by Sheikh Yusuf bin Said at the sprawling Namirah Mosque, built on the site where the Prophet Muhammad gave his final address to the early Muslim community in the 7th century. The sheikh repeated the prophet’s call for unity.

“We are commanded to be united and prohibited from being divided in all circumstances, which is even more important during the season of Hajj and at the places of rituals,” he said.

Saudi Arabia’s General Authority for Statistics said Tuesday that 1,845,045 people participated in this year’s Hajj, including 1,660,915 from outside the country. It’s significantly lower than the more 2,489,406 who took part in 2019, the last large Hajj before the pandemic. The number of overseas pilgrims this year fell 200,000 compared to 2019, and those from inside Saudi Arabia are only a third of the number that year.

After sunset Tuesday, pilgrims head to a nearby desert plain called Muzdalifa to collect pebbles, which they will use the next day in a ritual of symbolically stoning the devil at Mina.

This video takes you on a tour of the latest settings in Arafat.

What Are The Facilities In Arafat Tents During Hajj

The facilities in Arafat tents vary according to the pilgrim’s Hajj category or Maktab.

There are four main Maktab categories based on which the pilgrims are facilitated during Hajj

  • Category A – VIP services, comfortable air-conditioned and carpeted tents in Arafat and Mina with sofa cum bed, pillows, quilts, and dining facilities. In addition, spacious walkways, lawns, buffets, and other top-of-the-line facilities.
  • Category B – Excellent services, comfortable air-conditioned and carpeted tents in Arafat and Mina with sofa cum bed, pillows, quilts, and dining facilities.
  • Category C – Good services, reasonable airconditioned and carpeted tents.
  • Category D – Reasonable services, comfortable tents with room coolers.

The main structure of Araft tents is the same for all categories. However, the most expensive categories (A and B) are closer to Muzdalifah and have superior services inside.

The Day of 'Arafah: All Your Questions Answered

The Day of 'Arafah: All Your Questions Answered

*Please note: the meaning of the word 'Arafah refers to the Day of 'Arafah, while the word 'Arafat refers to the Plains of 'Arafat outside Makkah.

What is the Day of ' Arafah ?

The Day of ‘Arafah is the ninth day of Dhul-Hijjah - t his year, it is on 27th of June 2023.

The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are the best days of the entire Islamic year.  The Prophet (saw) said, 'There are no days greater and more beloved to Allah than these (first) ten days of Dhul-Hijjah'. [Ahmad]

You may know that Laylat al-Qadr is the pinnacle of the last ten nights of Ramadan, and is thus the best night of the year. Similarly, the Day of ‘Arafah is the pinnacle of the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah. It is thus the best day of the entire year.

What are some merits of the Day of 'Arafah?

  • Allah (swt) swears by this day in the Qur'an.

'By the sky containing constellations. And (by) the promised day. And (by) a witness and one witnessed'. [Qur'an, 85:1-3]

Regarding these verses, the Messenger of Allah (saw) said, 'The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, and the one witnessed is the Day of 'Arafah, and the witness is Friday. The sun does not rise or set upon a day that is more virtuous than it (i.e. the Day of 'Arafah)...' [Tirmidhi]

  • It is a day of immense forgiveness.

The Prophet (saw) said, 'There is no day on which Allah (swt) frees people from the Fire more so than on the Day of ‘Arafah. Indeed, He draws near and then boasts of them to the angels then says, "What do these want?"' [Muslim]

Undoubtedly, it would be a wasted opportunity if we did not spend ‘Arafah in trying to be one of those people whom Allah draws near to and forgives.

  • It is when the religion of Islam was perfected.

Laylat al-Qadr is the night when the Qur'an was first sent down. Meanwhile, the Day of 'Arafah is the day when Allah perfected our beautiful religion of Islam.

The final verses of the Qur'an were not yet revealed, but Allah sent down this ayah:

arafah tour

A Jewish man said to Umar ibn Al-Khattab (ra), 'O Commander of the Faithful! There is an ayah in your Book which you recite - if it had come to us the Jews, we would have taken that day as an Eid (festival)'.

Umar (ra) said, 'Which ayah?'

He said, '"Today I have perfected for you your religion and completed upon you My blessing and I have chosen for you Islam as [your] religion"'.

Umar (ra) replied, 'We surely know that day and the place where it was revealed upon the Prophet (saw). He was standing at ‘Arafat on a Friday'. [Bukhari]

The fact that Allah chose the day of ‘Arafah to reveal this verse makes it an even more blessed day.

What do pilgrims do on Hajj on the Day of ‘Arafah ?

On 9th Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims travel to the plains of ‘Arafat, where they will combine their Dhuhr and Asr prayers and then spend the entire day making du'a. They will stand until sunset facing the Qiblah and seeking forgiveness for their sins.

arafah tour

This is the most important ritual of the Hajj, without which the Hajj would be incomplete. The Prophet (saw) said, 'Hajj is ‘Arafah'. [Nasa’i]

In pre-Islamic Arabia, pilgrims would travel to the plains of ‘Arafat to pray, just as we do today - with the exception of the Quraish.

Aishah (ra) said, 'The Quraish and those who followed their religion - and they were called Al-Hums - would stand at Al-Muzdalifah, and they would say, "We are the people of Allah". The others would stand at 'Arafat, so Allah (swt) revealed (in Qur'an, 2:199), "Then depart from where the people depart"'. [Tirmidhi]

The Quraish would refuse to leave Makkah, believing that they were Allah's people and the caretakers of Allah's House, and thus they would not go to ‘Arafat on the Hajj to stand amongst the other Arabs and seek forgiveness. However, the Prophet (saw), following Allah's commands, ordered everyone to travel to ‘Arafat and repent on 9th Dhul Hijjah, as no one was above this ritual. This is why the Prophet (saw) made it clear that Hajj is incomplete without standing in ‘Arafat.

SubhanAllah, on this blessed day, Shaitan will be enraged and defeated as he watches millions of pilgrims, whom he has tempted throughout their lives into sin, repent and be forgiven in an instant through Allah's infinite Love and Mercy. Whatever sins they have committed will be completely erased, so they will emerge from the Hajj as pure and innocent as new-born babies.

The pilgrims will depart from ‘Arafat at sunset and travel to Muzdalifah, where they will pray Maghrib and Isha and sleep beneath the night sky, without tents or any shelter, all of them absolutely equal to each other.

What are five recommended actions for the Day of ‘Arafah?

For those of us who are not able to perform Hajj this year, we still have plenty of opportunities to reap the rewards of this blessed day. You should spend as much of the day as possible in worship, with the most important time being between Dhuhr and Maghrib.

The Messenger of Allah (saw) said of the Day of 'Arafah, 'In it, there is an hour in which no believing worshipper makes a supplication to Allah for good, except that Allah answers it for him, and he does not seek Allah's protection from evil, except that He protects him from it'. [Tirmidhi]

SubhanAllah, we should definitely not neglect making du'a on 'Arafah! While there are many beneficial du'as you can make on ‘Arafah, and you may even have a list of personal du'as, you should make sure you say this du'a on ‘Arafah:

arafah tour

It is highly recommended for those who are not pilgrims to fast on this day. The Prophet (saw) said, ‘It (fasting on the Day of ‘Arafah) expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year (i.e. those sins will be forgiven)’. [Muslim]

SubhanAllah, what an amazing opportunity: to be forgiven for sins we haven't even committed yet!

The pilgrims at Hajj do not generally fast as the most important worship on this day are their prayers, the remembrance of Allah (swt) and begging for His forgiveness.

' The people of knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the Day of ‘Arafah, except for those at 'Arafat'. [Tirmidhi]

  • Seek forgiveness

As mentioned before, 'Arafah is a day of immense forgiveness when Allah sets many people free from the Fire. Even if you are not standing on the Plains of 'Arafat, you can still seek Allah's forgiveness from your own home, workplace or local masjid.

arafah tour

There is yet another powerful hadith about Allah's forgiveness on this day:

'Shaitan is not considered more abased or more cast out or more contemptible or angrier on any other day than on the Day of 'Arafah. That is only because he sees the descent of the mercy and Allah's disregard for great wrong actions. That is except from what he (Shaitan) was shown on the Day of Badr'. [Malik]

'Arafah is thus a day on which Shaitan witnesses Allah forgive even those servants who have committed great wrong actions. It is a day on which we should humble ourselves to seek Allah's forgiveness and never despair of His mercy.

For the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah, the Prophet (saw) recommended reciting tahleel (La ilaha ill-Allah), takbeer (Allahu Akbar) and tahmeed (SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah, for example).

arafah tour

You should also recite the Talbiyah throughout the day.

You can also say  SubhanAllahi wa bi hamdihi, subhanAllahi-l 'adheem 100 times, as this particular dhikr washes away your sins.

  • Give a Prophetic Qurbani

Finally, while ordering your Qurbani, you can earn even more reward by sacrificing an extra Qurbani like the Prophet (saw).

Abu Talhah (ra) reported, ‘The Prophet (saw) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah and [his] Prophethood’. [Tabarani and Ahmad]

For those who are able to, giving an extra Qurbani like the Prophet (saw) is an excellent way to gain reward on the day of ‘Arafah. Not only will you be reviving a forgotten Sunnah, you will be also doubling your impact by feeding even more families a rare meal with meat during the days of Eid al-Adha.  See all our Qurbani locations here.

Day of Arafah – What is the Day of Arafah? & It’s Significance in Islam

Table of Contents

The Day of ‘Arafah is one of the most sacred days in Islam . It is the day when Allah SWT completed the religion of Islam and bestowed the Muslim Ummah with divine favour. On this day, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) bore witness three times for Allah SWT and his Muslim Ummah that he has succeeded in conveying his mission, communicating Allah’s SWT message of Islam and Quran to the believers.

Therefore, on this day, the Muslim Ummah is advised to pray Nafl, perform Qurbani and give zakat to the orphans in the name of Allah SWT.

Here is everything you need to know about the Day of Arafah, the day when Allah SWT perfected the religion of Islam.

What is the day of Arafah in Islam?

arafah tour

Just like Laylat-ul-Qadr is the pinnacle of the last ten nights of Ramadan, the Day of Arafah is the pinnacle of the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, marking the best among the days of the entire year.

Imam Ibn Kathir in his tafsir in reference to the significance of the Day of Arafah says:

“Imam Ahmad recorded that Tariq bin Shihab said, “A Jewish man said to `Umar bin Al-Khattab, `O Leader of the Believers! There is a verse in your Book, which is read by all of you (Muslims), and had it been revealed to us, we would have taken that day (on which it was revealed) as a day of celebration.’ `Umar bin Al-Khattab asked, “Which is that verse?” The Jew replied:

“This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion.” (Surah Al Maidah, 5:3)

Umar replied, “By Allah SWT! I know when and where this verse was revealed to Allah’s SWT Messenger. It was the evening on the Day of `Arafah on a Friday.”

When is the day of Arafah 2024?

The Day of Arafah falls on the 9 th of Dhul Hijjah, the twelfth month in the Islamic calendar. This year, the Day of Arafah is expected to start from the evening of Saturday the 15th of June 2024. However, the dates might vary depending upon the sighting of the moon.

What Is Dhul Hijjah?

Dhul Hijjah is the 12 th and final month in the Islamic calendar (Hijri Calendar). The month is regarded as one of the holiest periods of the year as Allah SWT has blessed it immensely. It is believed that the people who avoid sins and engage in good practices will attain great rewards in the month of Dhul Hijjah.

The month is blessed with two holy events; Hajj – the annual pilgrimage , and Eid ul-Adha. Moreover, being the last month, Dhul Hijjah is a reminder to Muslims to thank Allah SWT for a blessed year and prepare for the next one.

Why is the day of Arafah so important?

The Day of ‘Arafah is also significant because Allah SWT swore by this day in Surah al Burooj. It is known that Allah SWT promises by nothing except that which is great and mighty, so the Day of Arafah is greatly significant:

“By the sky containing great stars. And [by] the promised Day. And [by] the witness and what is witnessed.”  (85: 1-3)

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “The promised day is the Day of Resurrection, the witnessed day is the Day of ‘Arafah, and the witnessing day is Friday.”  (Tirmidhi)

In another event, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) also narrated, “There is no day on which Allah SWT frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ‘Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ‘Arafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking .”  (Muslim)

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “There is no day greater and more beloved to Allah than these (first) ten days of Dhul Hijjah.” [Ahmad]

Does Allah SWT descend on the day of Arafah?

The Day of Arafah is considered among the most virtuous days. The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT said that:

“On this day (Arafah), Allah SWT, the Most Exalted, descends to the nearest heaven, and He is proud of His servants on the earth and says to those in heavens, look at My servants, they have come from far and near, with hair dishevelled and faces covered with dust, to seek my Mercy. Even if their sins are as much as the sand or the froth of the sea, I shall forgive them.”

The aforementioned hadith proves that on the Day of Arafah, Allah SWT answers all supplications (duas), forgives the sins of those who repent, and grants salvation from the Hellfire.

What to do on the day of Arafah?

For those who aren’t able to perform Hajj this year, here is a list of obligations that one should conduct in order to gain rewards, forgiveness, and blessings from the Almighty.

muslim praying and reading quran during day of arafah

Therefore, every Muslim is advised to pray for peace, purification of their deeds, and forgiveness on the day of Arafah as it’s the holy night when Allah SWT descends just to listen to his believers.

Dua to read on the day of Arafah

Allah’s SWT Messenger (SAW) said about the dua on the Day of Arafah: “The most excellent dua is the dua on the Day of Arafah, and the best of what I and the prophets before me have said, is ‘There is nothing that deserves to be worshipped in truth except Allah SWT, He is Alone and has no partners, to Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise, and He is All-Powerful over all things.'”  (Muwatta)

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recommended those who are not pilgrims to fast on the Day of Arafah since Allah SWT has promised to forgive all previous sins. The beloved Prophet (PBUH) while emphasising fasting on this day said, “It expiates the sins of the past year and the coming year.”  (Muslim)

However, fasting doesn’t apply to the ones performing Hajj (pilgrims) as they will need the energy to fulfil the ritual of Hajj . Therefore, only the ones who are unable to perform Hajj should fast on the Day of Arafah in remembrance of Allah SWT. Also, do not forget to give Sadaqah and Zakat during the blessed ten days of Dhul Hijjah.

“The people of knowledge consider it recommended to fast on the Day of Arafah, except for those at ‘Arafat.” [Tirmidhi]

Pray for forgiveness from Allah SWT

As mentioned earlier, the Day of Arafah is of immense forgiveness as Allah SWT sets people free from the fires of Hell. The Messenger ( PBUH ) of Allah SWT said, “There is no day on which Allah SWT frees people from the fire more so than on the Day of ‘Arafah. Indeed, He draws near and then boasts of them to the angels and then says, “What do these people want?” [Muslim]

Even if a person isn’t standing on the Arafat plains, they can still seek forgiveness on the holy and honourable day by supplicating from their local Masjid, workplace, or home.

In another hadith, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “Shaitan is not considered more abased or more cast out or more contemptible or angrier on any other day than on the Day of ‘Arafah. That is only because he sees the descent of Mercy and Allah’s SWT disregard for great wrong actions. That is except from what he (Shaitan) was shown on the Day of Badr .” [Malik]

Allah SWT has committed to forgiving everyone on the Day of Arafah . Therefore, one should stay humble and seek forgiveness.

arafah tour

Abu Talhah (RA) when asked about the Sunnah of Qurbani on this day narrated, “The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) sacrificed for the one who could not sacrifice from his Ummah, one who bore witness to the Oneness of Allah SWT and [his] Prophethood.’ [Tabarani and Ahmad]

Hadiths Regarding the Day of Arafah

Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, “There is no day on which Allah SWT frees people from the Fire more so than on the day of ‘Arafah. He comes close to those (people standing on ‘Arafah), and then He revels before His Angels saying, ‘What are these people seeking.”  (Muslim)

While highlighting the significance of making dua on the Day of Arafah, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said, “The best supplication is the one made on the Day of Arafah, and the best supplication of which I and the Prophets before me have made was, “There is no god but Allah SWT, He is One, without a partner, to Him belongs the dominion and all praises, and He is Omnipotent over all things.” (Tirmizi)

The Messenger (PBUH) of Allah SWT narrated that on the Day of Arafah , Allah SWT would say to the angels, “My slaves have come to Me, looking dishevelled, from every deep valley hoping for My Mercy, so if your sins were equivalent to the amount of sand or the drops of rain or like the foam on the sea I will forgive them. So go forth, My slaves, having forgiveness and for what or who you have interceded for.” (Imam At-Tabrani)

Is Eid After the Day of Arafah?

The Day of Arafah commemorates the finality of the divine revelation and the religion of Islam. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) guides his Ummah to view the Day of Arafah as a day of gratitude. Therefore, Eid ul Adha is celebrated the day after.

Summary – Day of Arafah

The Day of Arafah is on the ninth day of Dhul Hijjah and is considered one of the most blessed days. It is the day when pilgrims gather at the mountain plain of Arafat and pray to Allah SWT, asking for forgiveness and blessings. It is regarded as the holiest night of the Islamic year. Therefore, if one isn’t performing Hajj, they should pray Nafl, observe fast, perform Qurbani and even give out zakat on the Day of Arafah.

What is the day of ‘arafah and why is it important, why is the day of ‘arafah special.

The Day of ‘Arafah ( Yawm Al-‘Arafah ), also called the Day of the Standing ( Yawm Al-Waqf ), is significant because it is the holiest day of the Islamic Hijri lunar year (just as Laylat Al-Qadr , the Night of Empowering Decree in Ramadan, is the holiest night of the Islamic year).

When Is the Day of ‘Arafah?

‘Arafah is the ninth day of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah, the 12th and final month in the Islamic calendar. It occurs on the second day of the Hajj pilgrimage to Makkah (and its surrounding religious waymarks) that Muslims are obligated to perform at least once in their lifetimes, if able.

What Is the Day of ‘Arafah?

The Day of ‘Arafah is the Hajj in itself. So said the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him:

“ Al-Hajj ‘Arafah ,” meaning “‘Arafah is the Hajj” (Ahmad).

Without observing it in its proper place and time, there is no Hajj. This means that all other aspects and rites of Hajj have some lawful way to make up for missing or modifying them, or factors that may excuse one from them.

On the Day of ‘Arafah, from somewhat before noon until sunset, Pilgrims, observing the rules and symbolic dress of ritual pilgrim sanctity ( iḥrâm ), gather to the Plain of ‘Arafât and take their stand ( wuqûf ) of faith before God, entreating His mercy and forgiveness. From this rite, ‘Arafah takes its other popular name, Yawm Al-Waqf (the Day of Standing).

Its scene — a sea of indistinguishable humanity across a stark plain, pleading with outstretched hands for their Lord’s acceptance of their repentance, His pardon, forgiveness and mercy, and His admission of them into His Paradise — presages humanity’s standing before God on the Day of Judgment.

While resting and even sleep from fatigue are not proscribed for Pilgrims on this day, the Prophet, on him be peace, is known to have condensed and combined, the noon and midday ritual Salah-Prayers of Dhuhr and ‘Aṣr, respectively, at the earliest time on this day. Then he beseeched God in supplicatory prayer ( du’a ) — with outstretched arms, upraised palms and intensity virtually continuously — from just after noon until sunset.

Should Muslims not making Hajj observe the Day of ‘Arafah?

Yes. While Pilgrims do not fast on the Day of ‘Arafah, Muslims who are not making Hajj are strongly urged (in Islamic Law, fiqh , it is codified as mustaḥabb , highly desirable) to fast this day. The Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him, said of this act of worship, that is, fasting the Day of ‘Arafah for those not present at Hajj:

“It atones for the sins of the preceding and coming year” (Muslim).

Scholars say the sins meant here may not include the enormities, or kabâ’ir , the cardinal sins. Yet God knows best.

The Day of ‘Arafah — for the Pilgrims and all the believers — is the best day for worship and supplication in the entire year because the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him, said of it:

“On no day does Allah emancipate people from the Fire [of Hell in the Hereafter] as He does on ‘Arafah. Near does He draw to them [the Pilgrims upon ‘Arafah]. Then does He exalt [them] before His angels, saying: ‘And what do they seek?’ ” (Tirmidhî)

So, on the Day of ‘Arafah, God descends in the way that befits His Holiness to the heaven of the world and lauds before the Heavenly Community the resolute striving unto Him in humility of His human Pilgrims, saying:

“Come unto Me are My slaves, disheveled, from every faraway pass, longing for My mercy. Then [He says to the Pilgrims] be your sins like unto the grains of sand, the drops of rain, the foam on the sea, yet I forgive them! So go forth, My slaves, with all forgiveness, and for whatever and whomever you have pleaded” (graded Ḥasan by Al-Albânî).

What are some of the special virtues of the Day of ‘Arafah?

It is the day God perfected the religion of Islam.

It is the day God bestowed the completion of His divine favor upon the Muslims, and for humanity.

It is the day God said He chose and was pleased with Al-Islam — The Peace — as the religion of the believers unto the end of the world.

It is the day God revealed these three virtues of Islam to His Prophet, God’s blessing and peace upon him, as part of the Quran (Sûrat Al-Mâ’idah, 5:3).

It is the day of the Prophet’s Farewell Pilgrimage ( Ḥajj Al-Wada‘ ) and his celebrated Farewell Address ( Khutbah Al-Wadâ‘ ) to all the believers until the end of time, on him be peace, which took place on a Friday, the Muslim weekly communal day of Congregational Prayer ( Jumu‘ah ), during which the previously cited revelation came down.

It is the day the Prophet, on him be peace, bore witness three times before the believers and God that he had successfully completed the divine mission of His messengership: To convey God’s message of the Quran and Islam to humanity.

Are all the days of Hajj sacred?

Yes. God sanctifies Yawm Al-’Arafah — and the Days of Hajj surrounding it — by His sacred, divine oath in the first three verses ( ayahs ) of Sûrat Al-Fajr (89):

By the dawn, and the Ten Nights! By all that is even and all that is odd.

Of these verses, the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him, said:

“The ‘10’ are the 10 days of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah. The ‘odd’ is the Day of ‘Arafah, and the ‘even’ is the Day of Eid [the 10th day of Hajj, Eid al-Aḍḥa, the Festival Day of Sacrifice ( uḍḥiyah qurbani ) that follows the Day of ‘Arafah]” (Aḥmad). The learned Companion Ibn ‘Abbâs, God be pleased with him, narrates: “The Messenger of Allah, God’s blessings and peace upon him, said: ‘On no days are righteous deeds more beloved to Allah than these days’ [of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah]” (Bukhârî).

Ibn Ḥajar, the great scholar and commentator on the statements of the Prophet, on him be peace, known as ḥadîth , said in his commentary on this prophetic statement that “only in these 10 days of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah may the believer engage in the performance of all the pillars of worship in Islam at the same time — Ritual Prayer ( Ṣalât ) , Fasting ( Ṣawm ), Zakât (Obligatory Alms), and Hajj (Pilgrimage) [implicitly testifying that ‘There is no God but Allah’]. It is this that distinguishes them.”

What deeds should Muslims do in the 10 Days of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah?

While the Day of ‘Arafah is the holiest of these sacred days, and the Greater Hajj ( Ḥajj Al-Akbar ) and ‘Umrah (the Lesser Pilgrimage) its best acts, the first 10 days of Dhu’l-Hijjah are all exceedingly blessed. So believers should strive in them with specific acts of worship learned from the Prophet, on him be peace:

uḍḥiyah qurbani sacrifice : One of the best deeds to bring one closer to God is offering a sacrifice, choosing a high-quality animal, fattening it, and spending on it for the sake of God. Offer it here .

fasting : In addition to following the example of the Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him, in fasting ‘Arafah, the ninth day of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah, the believer should fast as much as he or she can of the eight days of Dhu’l-Ḥijjah that precede ‘Arafah.

takbîr — Allâhu Akbar , God is Great

taḥmîd — Alhamdulillah , All praise is for God

tahlîl — Lâ ilâha illa’Llâh , There is no God but Allah

tasbîḥ — Subḥân’Allâh, Glory be to Allah

increasing righteous deeds : God loves all good deeds and will generously reward them in these days.

sincere repentance : Repentance, heartfelt and humble, is the object of these holy days and Hajj, and it could not be more crucial — nor likely more accepted, successful and rewarded — than in this special season. This means turning to God and begging His forgiveness with true regret for past misdeeds repeatedly and with a commitment to give up one’s sins and abandon one’s transgressions permanently.

Why is this day called ‘Arafah?

‘Arafah, or ‘Arafât (literally: the Place of Meeting, or Knowing, or Fragrance) is a vast, open desert plain about 12 miles southeast of the Ka‘bah, which is in the city of Makkah. The Plain of ‘Arafah is marked by the prominence of Jabal ‘Arafah, the Mount of Meeting, also known as Jabal Al-Raḥmah, the Mount of Mercy. This is a granite hillock rising to a peak of about 230 feet.

The plain surrounding the Mount of Mercy hosts the millions of Pilgrims who embark from one of Hajj’s waymarks called Mina. They depart Mina after sunrise on the second day of Hajj to gather at ‘Arafah.

God names the place of ‘Arafât in the Quran and in the same verse cites the pilgrim celebrants’ completion of that day:

“Yet when you pour forth from ‘Arafât, then remember God much at the Sacred Waymark [of Muzdalifah]” (Sûrat Al-Baqarah, 2:198).

The scholars record four unauthenticated accounts of the origin of the name ‘Arafah for this plain:

It marks the place of reunion on earth for Adam and Eve after their divine banishment from the Garden for eating of the forbidden tree. Both are said to have descended to Earth in different localities — according to some accounts, Adam in India and Eve in East Africa. They “met up” — ‘arafah — at a lone mountain in a vast plain. Thus, it and its surrounding plain became known as the Mount of ‘Arafah. Upon this holy site, Adam and Eve became "reacquainted with one another" — also a meaning of ‘arafah — after lengthy years of separation (some say two centuries).

‘Arafah is the nominalization of the verb ‘arafa , “he came to know.” It became the place name of the plain because of the Arch-Angel Gabriel’s questioning of the Prophet Abraham, on him be peace, on this site after Gabriel, on him be peace, had taught him each of the rituals of Hajj, asking Abraham after his instruction in his religious rites: “ A‘raftah? Do you now know it?” and Abraham answering: “ ‘Araftuh . I now know it.”

It names the plain where Pilgrims get to know one another.

It is the holy site where the mercy of God descends during Hajj as if with its own "heavenly fragrance," another meaning of ‘arafah .

"Bayar listrik 2 juta, 3 juta. Belum sama wifi, air. Terus sama bayar sampai 1 juta lebih untuk tempat sampah, satpam," jelas Arafah.
