World Travel Awards 2022: Portugal brings home 12 awards

Porto, Lisbon and Madeira were some of the destinations awarded at the world tourism “Oscars”.

Portugal picked up 12 major accolades at the award ceremony of the 2022 World Travel Awards, which took place this Friday in Oman.

After receiving 30 European awards, Portugal stood out in the WTA Grand Final Gala Ceremony and was granted 12 honours, confirming once again the country's immense touristic potential.

In addition to destinations such as Porto or Lisbon, Portugal was also awarded for national projects: the Paiva Walkways, in Arouca, won the title of "best adventure tourist attraction" and Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua won the category of "best conservation company" for the tenth year. Dark Sky Alqueva was also distinguished as "the best responsible tourism project" in the world and "best European destination for responsible tourism".

The World Travel Awards include the entire tourism sector, from hotels, destinations, airlines and tour operators.

Widely regarded as the "Oscars" of tourism, the World Travel Awards have been awarded by sector professionals worldwide since 1993, distinguishing the work carried out in the tourism industry, in order to stimulate the competitiveness and quality of tourism.

Portugal once again Best Tourism Destination in Europe

For the 5th time in the last six years, Portugal was again considered "Best Tourism Destination in Europe" in the World Travel Awards 2022.

Thousands of professionals from the sector vote in this election, from all countries in the world and this year, Portugal took home more than 30 prizes, including destination, regions, and products and services. 

Under regional destinations, we note the Azores (Europe's Leading Adventure Tourism Destination), the Algarve (Europe's Leading Beach Destination), Lisbon (Europe's Leading City Break Destination, Europe's Leading Cruise Destination and Europe's Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination) and Porto (Europe's Leading City Destination).

According to the Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services, Rita Marques, "being named in more than three dozen categories of the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022, takes on significant relevance after the difficult pandemic years. It is with great pride that we see national tourism companies, professionals and bodies being acknowledged by their peers at international level. All the sector agents are to be congratulated for rising to the challenge that is staking Portugal as a tourism destination par excellence, regardless of the circumstances ".

Considered the "Oscars" of Tourism, the World Travel Awards have been awarded by sector professionals on a global scale since 1993, acknowledging the work undertaken by the tourism industry to drive competitiveness and quality in tourism.

Please recall that in 2021 Portugal had already brought home more than two dozen prizes at the European edition of the World Travel Awards.

The awards ceremony (world) is scheduled for 11 November in Oman.

World Travel Awards 2022 Portugal: Porto voted best city destination in the world in 2022

The city of Porto has been named the World's Best City Destination 2022 at the World Travel Awards ceremony, held in November in Muscat, Oman. These awards include the entire tourism sector, including hotels, destinations, airlines and tour operators, and in total, Portugal won over dozen awards at the global tourism gala known as the "Tourism Oscars" . Note that earlier this year, Portugal took home a large share of awards at the European edition of the World Travel Awards , and is now repeating its success on a global level. We have all the details, including the main news that  Porto was voted best city destination in the world in 2022. 

In a statement, it was highlighted that Porto was considered the Best City Destination in the World 2022 , ahead of cities such as Acapulco, Cancun and Mazatlán (Mexico), Bogotá (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador), Cape Town (South Africa), Nairobi (Kenya), Dubai (United Arab Emirates), Las Vegas, Miami and New York (United States of America), Hanoi (Vietnam), Hong Kong (China), Melbourne and Sydney (Australia), Queenstown (New Zealand), London (England), Lyon (France), Marrakech (Morocco) and Portugal's very own Lisbon .

The World Travel Awards ceremony, whose prizes are "considered the Oscars of tourism", brought together the main decision-makers, and the most important and prominent figures in the sector .

The town councillor for Tourism and Internationalisation of Porto City Council, Catarina Santos Cunha, received the award on behalf of the municipality , having attended the ceremony with the president of the Porto Tourism Association, Luís Pedro Martins.

The World Travel Awards include the entire tourism sector, with the focus on hotels, destinations, airlines, tour operators and more. These are the 12 areas where Portugal was a winner at this year's Global Tourism Oscars .

Portugal named best tourism destination in Europe, 5th time in last six years

LISBON - Portugal has been named “Best Tourist Destination in Europe” in the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022, which is the fifth time in the last six years, the Portuguese economy ministry announced on Monday.

“The election is the result of voting by thousands of professionals from the sector, from all countries of the world, and this year Portugal collected more 30 awards, between destination, regions and products and services,” writes the ministry of economy and maritime affairs, which oversees the sector.

Among the regional destinations, the Azores (Europe’s leading adventure tourism destination), Algarve (Europe’s leading beach destination), Lisbon (Europe’s leading city break destination, Europe’s leading cruise destination and Europe’s leading seaside metropolitan destination) and Porto (Europe’s leading city destination) stand out.

“The distinction, in more than three dozen categories in the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022, takes on particular significance after the difficult years of the pandemic. It is with great pride that we see national tourism companies, professionals and entities being recognized by their peers at an international level. All players in the sector are to be congratulated for rising to this challenge which is to affirm Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence, whatever the circumstances,” says Portugal’s secretary of state for tourism, commerce and services, Rita Marques, quoted in the same statement.

The World Travel Awards - considered the ‘Oscars’ of tourism - awarded by professionals in the sector on a global scale, since 1993, distinguishing the work done in the tourism industry, in order to stimulate competitiveness and quality of tourism, they recall.

In 2021, Portugal won more than two dozen awards in the European edition of the World Travel Awards.

The world awards ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 11 in Oman.

Porto nominated for four World Travel Awards 2022

Porto is in the running for four World Travel Awards 2022, the awards known as the tourism “Oscars”. In this year’s edition of the competition that chooses the best places to visit in Europe, it enters the race for “Europe's Leading City Break Destination,” “Europe's Leading City Destination,” “Europe's Leading Cultural Destination” and “Europe's Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination.”

The voting in the several categories takes place online until August the 8th and the winners will be announced at the World Travel Awards ceremony, in Mallorca, Spain, on October the 1st, where some of the main decision makers, leading figures and influencers of European travels are expected

The World Travel Awards are a global initiative that recognizes and rewards excellence in travel and tourism based on the votes from travel industry professionals, media, and consumers around the world.

It is recalled that, in the 2020 edition of this competition, Porto won the award for “Europe's Leading City Break Destination”, surpassing the competition from 13 cities, including Amsterdam (Netherlands), Athens (Greece), Lisbon (Portugal), Paris (France) or Venice (Italy).

“With Europe’s travel and tourism economy enjoying a long-awaited revival, the competition to be number one is healthier than ever,” believes World Travel Awards founder Graham Cooke.

This year’s nominees compete in a wide range of categories which include aviation, tourist attractions, car rental, cruises, destinations, hotels and resorts, meetings and events, travel agencies and tour operators.

Portugal named Europe’s best tourist destination - again

Pride of place goes to the country as a whole being voted Europe’s Leading Tourist Destination for the fifth time in the last six years.

Awards in other major categories include Europe’s Leading Adventure Tourism Destination (Azores), Europe’s Leading Beach Destination (Algarve) and Europe’s Leading City Destination (Porto). 

“The votes are cast by thousands of professionals in the travel industry coming from all countries of the world, and this year Portugal earned over thirty awards for its destinations, regions, products and services,” reads a press release from the Ministry of the Economy and Maritime Affairs, which oversees the tourism sector.

“The distinctions in over thirty categories in the European edition of the World Travel Awards 2022 is of particular significance after the difficult pandemic years. It is with pride that we see our tourism companies and professionals being acknowledged by their international peers,” said Rita Marques, the Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services.

“All the agents of the sector are to be congratulated for meeting the challenge of consolidating Portugal as a tourist destination of excellence, in whatever circumstances.”

Adventure in Arouca

Portugal’s capital Lisbon alone won six awards including Europe’s Leading Seaside Metropolitan Destination, Europe’s Leading City Break Destination and Europe’s Leading Cruise Destination.

City mayor Carlos Moedas commented: “The awards Lisbon receives today reflect our investment in the quality of the tourism offers in Lisbon. We are recuperating and repositioning Lisbon as an increasingly attractive capital.”

Portugal shines at World Travel Awards 2021

Portugal has again picked up a clutch of awards at the 28th World Travel Awards which are considered the ‘Oscars’ of international tourism.

This year, and despite the Covid-19 pandemic, it picked up 20 awards. The Azores region won the ‘Best Adventure Tourism Destination’ while the Algarve won ‘Best Beach Destination’. Madeira won the ‘Best Island Destination’ . Lisbon Cruise Ship Terminal was also the best, while Portugal’s tourism board Turismo de Portugal won the award for ‘Best Tourism Authority’. The Paiva Walkways once again picked up the award for ‘Best Adventure Tourism Attraction’ and ‘Best Tourism Development Project’. The Pestana CR7 Lisboa was the best ‘Lifestyle Hotel’ and the ‘Best Resort’ was the Conrad Algarve . The Valverde Hotel won the award for ‘Best Luxury Boutique Hotel’ and Vila Vita Parc was the ‘Best Luxury Villas Hotel’. The Lake Resort was considered the ‘Best Luxury and Lifestyle Resort’ and the Dunas Douradas Beach Club was voted the ‘Best Resort and Luxury Villas Space’. The Cascade Wellness Resort was elected the ‘Best Resort in Europe’ in the sports category. The awards are the result of online voting which is open to the public, tourism professionals and travel agents worldwide. Sheree M. A Memphis judge ordered a pause on the foreclosure sale of Elvis Presley’s iconic Graceland home in a brief hearing Wednesday morning.

Chancellor JoeDae Jenkins ruled that the home could stay in the hands of the Presley family for the time being, amid evidence that documents giving a company the right to sell it may have been forged.

Naussany Investments and Private Lending LLC sought to auction off Graceland and its surrounding property in Memphis, Tennessee, to the highest bidder on Thursday.

The company claims it had loaned $3.8 million to Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’ only daughter, before her death in January last year. The estate was then transferred to her daughter, Riley Keough.

Jenkins said Wednesday the sale must be postponed until there is clear evidence of who owns the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll’s home , adding that a premature verdict would cause great harm to Presley’s family.

“The estate is considered unique under Tennessee law, and in being unique, the loss of the real estate will be considered irreparable harm,” Jenkins ruled.

Keough filed a lawsuit May 15 to block the sale, claiming documents which named Naussany as the owner of the estate were “fraudulent.” 

The company claims Lisa Marie signed a deed of trust in 2018 that used Graceland as collateral. 

Following the hearing, Graceland’s operators issued a statement: “As the court has now made clear, there was no validity to the claims. There will be no foreclosure. 

“Graceland will continue to operate as it has for the past 42 years, ensuring that Elvis fans from around the world can continue to have a best in class experience when visiting his iconic home.”

Lisa Marie’s mother and Elvis’ ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, also refuted the company’s claim, slamming it as “a scam” on social media. 

Keough alleged in her 60-page lawsuit that her mother never borrowed any money from Nassauny, with a notary public agreeing that they had never notarized anything Lisa Marie had supposedly signed. 

Jenkins said the affidavit from the notary public was enough to delay the foreclosure sale until Nassauny can prove it made a loan, it wasn’t repaid and that the estate was offered as collateral. 

The judge, however, hinted that the case will ultimately favor Keough, telling the heiress she’ll be “successful” as long as her defense team can back up the affidavit from the notary at a future hearing.

Attorneys for Naussany could not be immediately reached for comment. 

Graceland has been a fixture in Memphis since Elvis bought the estate in 1957 for $102,500, the same year he released the hits “Blue Christmas” and “All Shook Up.”

Spanning 13.8 acres, the estate — preserved as it was when Elvis died there in 1977 — draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually who come to celebrate the legacy of Elvis.

Graceland is also the final resting place of Elvis and his family, including his parents, Lisa Marie, and her son Benjamin, who took his own life in 2020.  

The mansion, originally built in 1939, was named after Ruth Brown Moore’s aunt, Grace Toof.

Lisa Marie inherited Graceland in Elvis’ will and it opened to the public as a museum in 1982. After her death in January 2023, Riley  became the sole heir.

Priscilla, 78, has also stated her wish to be  buried next to her ex-husband  upon her own death.
