Have you ever gone cruising in a houseboat on the backwaters of Kerala? If you haven't, make sure you do. This is easily one amongst the most remarkable and unique experiences that our state has to offer.

Present day houseboats are huge, slow moving exotic barges used for leisure trips, and are in fact a reworked version of the Kettuvallams of olden times. The original Kettuvallams were used to carry tons of rice and spices. A standard Kettuvallam can hold up to 30 tons of goods from Kuttanad to the Kochi port.

In Malayalam language Kettu refers to ‘dwelling structures’ ‘Vallam’ means boat. These are boats with a thatched roof cover over wooden hulls. The boat is made of planks of jack-wood joined together with coir. This is then coated with a caustic black resin made from boiled cashew kernels. With careful maintenance, a Kettuvallam can last for generations.

A portion of the Kettuvallam was covered with bamboo and coir to serve as a restroom and kitchen for the crew. Meals were cooked onboard and supplemented with freshly cooked fish from the backwaters.

When  modern trucks replaced this system of transport, people came up with a new way that would keep these boats, almost all of which were more than 100 years old, in the market. By constructing special rooms to accommodate travellers, these boats cruised forward from near-extinction to enjoy their present  popularity.

Today these are a familiar sight on the backwaters and in Alappuzha alone, there are as many as 500 houseboats.

While converting kettuvallams into houseboats, care is taken to use only natural products. Bamboo mats, sticks and wood of the areca nut tree are used for roofing, coir mats and wooden planks for the flooring and wood of coconut trees and coir for beds. Nowadays, Solar panels are preferred for lighting.

Today, the houseboats boast of the same comforts of a good hotel including furnished bedrooms, modern toilets, cozy living rooms, a kitchen and even a balcony for angling. Parts of the curved roof of wood or plaited palm leaves open out to provide shade and allow uninterrupted views. While most boats are poled by local oarsmen, some are powered by a 40 HP engine. Boat-trains - formed by joining two or more houseboats together are also used by large groups of sightseers.

What is truly magical about a houseboat ride is the breathtaking view of the untouched and otherwise inaccessible rural Kerala that it offers, while you float in a relaxed way right through it.

Thrissur Nalambalam pilgrimage on an AC bus for just Rs 600

The District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) in Thrissur has made arrangements for the Nalambalam pilgrimage held every year during the Malayalam month of Karkidakom. Care has been taken by the district administration to ensure that devotees, especially senior citizens, taking part in the pilgrimage face no hassles. A nominal fee of Rs 600 will be charged from the pilgrims.

According to belief, offering prayers at the four temples (Nalambalam) dedicated to the four sons of king Dasharatha – Rama, Bharata, Lakshmana and Shatrughna – would help devotees tide over the difficulties of Karkidakom.

The pilgrimage starts from the Sree Rama Temple at Thriprayar, and continues to Koodalmanikayam Temple at Irinjalakkuda, Lakshmana Perumal Temple at Thirumoozhikkulam and Shatrughna Temple at Payammal. When the devotees return to the Thriprayar Temple from the Payammal Temple and pray there, the pilgrimage is considered to be completed.

During the travel between the four temples, programmes like quiz and narrating mythological stories have been arranged. An air-conditioned vehicle will be deployed for the trip. A sumptuous meal, the prasadam of Thriprayar temple, a kit of Karkidaka kanji and Malayalam panchangam will be given to the pilgrims as part of the package.

DTPC has already conducted over 100 Nalambalam trips so far since it started the arrangement four years ago. Over 3,000 devotees have utilized the DTPC facility.

നഗരത്തിൽനിന്നു ഡിടിപിസിയുടെ നേതൃത്വത്തിൽ കഴിഞ്ഞ മൂന്നു വർഷത്തിനിടെ യാത്ര പോയത് 6000 വിനോദയാത്രികർ. പതിനഞ്ചോളം സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്ക് 300 ട്രിപ്പുകളാണ് 2015 മുതൽ ഡിടിപിസി നടത്തിയത്.സംസ്ഥാന ഒട്ടുമിക്ക ജില്ലകളിലും സംസ്ഥാന സർക്കാരിനു കീഴിൽ സമാനമായ രീതിയിൽ ഡിടിപിസി രൂപീകരിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ടെങ്കിലും ടൂർ പാക്കേജു നടത്തുന്നതു തൃശൂർ ടൂറിസം പ്രമോഷൻ കൗൺസിൽ മാത്രമാണ്. മൂന്നാർ, തെന്മല, മധുര–രാമേശ്വരം–ധനുഷ്കോടി, തൃശൂർ ബാക്ക് വാട്ടർ, മുസ്‌രിസ്, തൃശൂർ ഇക്കോ ടൂറിസം, പറമ്പിക്കുളം, ശിരുവാണി  ധ്യാനലിംഗ, ശബരിമല, പഴനി, മൂകാംബിക, നാലമ്പലം, കടൽയാത്ര തുടങ്ങിയ പതിനഞ്ചോളം പാക്കേജുകളാണ് ഡിടിപിസി നടത്തുന്നത്. ഒരു യാത്രയിൽ 20 മുതൽ 25 വരെ അംഗങ്ങളാണ് പങ്കെടുക്കാറുള്ളത്. 

യാത്രാ പ്രേമികൾക്ക് ചെലവു കുറഞ്ഞു യാത്രാ സൗകര്യം ലഭിക്കുന്നതിനു പുറമെ ഡിടിപിസിക്കു നല്ലൊരു വരുമാനമാർഗവുമാണ് ഈ ടൂർ പാക്കേജുകൾ. ദേശീയ ഗെയിംസ് തൃശൂരിൽ നടന്നപ്പോൾ എത്തിയ കായിക താരങ്ങൾക്കു തൃശൂരിനെ പരിചയപ്പെടുത്തുകയെന്ന  ലക്ഷ്യത്തോടെയാണ് ടൂർ പാക്കേജുകൾ ആരംഭിച്ചത്. താമസവും ഭക്ഷണവും യാത്രയും ഉൾപ്പെടെ കുറഞ്ഞ ചെലവിൽ മികച്ച ടൂറിസം അനുഭവം ഒരുക്കുന്നുവെന്നതാണ് ഡിടിപിസിയുടെ ടൂർ പാക്കേജുകളുടെ ആകർഷണം. തൃശൂർ ഡിടിപിസി വാങ്ങിയ ശീതീകരിച്ച വാഹനത്തിലാണ് യാത്രകൾ നടത്തുന്നത്. 2015ൽ തുടക്കമിട്ട ടൂറിസം പാക്കേജുകൾ ഇന്നു സംസ്ഥാനത്തിനു മൊത്തം മാതൃകയായി മാറുന്നു. ‘തൃശൂരിനെ ടൂറിസം ഹബ് ആക്കി വികസിപ്പിക്കണം’

തൃശൂരിനെ സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ ടൂറിസം ഹബ് ആയി വികസിപ്പിക്കുകയാണ് ലക്ഷ്യമെന്ന് ഡിടിപിസി ടൂർസ് ആൻഡ് പ്രോഗ്രാം ജനറൽ മാനേജർ എൻ.ആർ.രവിചന്ദ്രൻ പറയുന്നു. ഡിടിപിസി രവിചന്ദ്രനാണ് ടൂർ പാക്കേജുകളുടെ മേൽനോട്ടം. കേരളം സന്ദർശിക്കുവാനും കാണുവാനും ആഗ്രഹിക്കുന്നവർക്കു സംസ്ഥാനത്തിന്റെ മധ്യഭാഗമായ തൃശൂരിൽ താമസിച്ച് വിവിധ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്ക് യാത്ര പോകുന്നതിനുള്ള സൗകര്യവും രീതിയും വികസിപ്പിക്കണം. ഇതാണു തൃശൂർ‍ ഡിടിപിസിയുടെ ലക്ഷ്യം. ടൂറിസം വികസിപ്പിക്കുന്നതോടൊപ്പം  അടിസ്ഥാന സൗകര്യങ്ങളും തൊഴിലും വർധിക്കുമെന്നതും നേട്ടമാണ്.–  കലക്ടർ എ.കൗശിഗൻ, ഡിടിപിസി സെക്രട്ടറി പി.മഹാദേവൻ, മുൻ സെക്രട്ടറി പ്രാൺസിങ്, ഡിടിപിസി എക്സിക്യൂട്ടീവ് ബോഡി എന്നിവയുടെയെല്ലാം  പിന്തുണയാണ് ടൂർ പാക്കേജുകളുടെ വിജയത്തിനു പിന്നിൽ. –രവിചന്ദ്രൻ പറഞ്ഞു. ഈ യാത്രകൾ അവിസ്മരണീയം   കെ.എം.ഫ്രാൻസിസ്, കൊട്ടേക്കാട് (ഡിടിപിസിക്കൊപ്പം ആറു യാത്രകൾ നടത്തിയ  കെ.എം.ഫ്രാൻസിസ് റിട്ട. ബാങ്ക് ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥനാണ്) യാത്ര പോയ സ്ഥലങ്ങൾ: മലക്കപ്പാറ, തൃശൂർ ബാക്ക് വാട്ടർ ടൂറിസം, തെന്മല തുടങ്ങിയവ

‘ജോലിയിൽനിന്നു വിരമിച്ചതിനാൽ ഒഴിവുസമയം ധാരാളമുണ്ട്. സർക്കാർ നേരിട്ടു നടത്തുന്ന യാത്രയായതിനാൽ ചെലവു കുറവാണെന്നതും മികച്ച നിലവാരമുള്ളതാണെന്നതുമാണ് വീണ്ടും വീണ്ടും ഡിടിപിസിയുടെ യാത്രകൾ തിര‍ഞ്ഞെടുക്കാൻ കാരണം.ഡിടിപിസിയുടെ ഉദ്യോഗസ്ഥരുമായും ബസ് ഡ്രൈവറുമായും  ടൂർ ഗൈഡുമായുമെല്ലാം നല്ല ബന്ധവുമുണ്ട്. അധികൃതർ ഓരോ യാത്രയിലും കാര്യങ്ങൾ കൃത്യമായി വിശദീകരിച്ച് സഹായിക്കാറുണ്ട്. അപ്രതീക്ഷിത സമ്മാനങ്ങളും യാത്രക്കാർക്കായി ഒരുക്കാറുണ്ട്.   കൃത്യസമയത്ത് ആരംഭിക്കുന്നതിലും മറ്റും കണിശത പുലർത്താറുണ്ട്. പറഞ്ഞ സമയത്ത് ആരംഭിച്ച് കൃത്യസമയത്ത് യാത്ര തിരികെയെത്തും. ഡിടിപിസി ഓഫിസിനോടു ചേർന്നു പാർക്കിങ് സൗകര്യമുണ്ട്. ഇനിയും ഡിടിപിസിക്കൊപ്പം യാത്രകളിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കും.’ മികച്ച ഭക്ഷണം, മഴ അനുഭവം   സുലേഖ മേനോൻ, കോട്ടപ്പുറം (ഡിടിപിസിക്കൊപ്പം അഞ്ച് യാത്രകൾ നടത്തിയ സുലേഖ വീട്ടമ്മയാണ്)
