Visit Australia On This 13-day Virtual Trip Complete With Kangaroo-filled Beaches and Beautiful Vineyards

In-person tourism may have come to a halt for now, but that isn’t stopping destinations from inspiring our future wanderlust. Plenty of places have taken to the internet to offer virtual tours including several National Park tours in the U.S., a partial tour of the Great Wall of China , and a handful of museums around the world. But now, Tourism Western Australia is taking it to the next level by offering a 13-day virtual reality tour around some of its most unique places and landscapes.

“Today marks the first day of our FREE virtual tour around Western Australia which starts in Esperance,” the tourism board announced on its Facebook page on April 15. “Today you can soak up the endless blue coastlines, then relax with a coffee and curious kangaroos at Lucky Bay beach.”

It added, each day, at 9 a.m. WST, they will travel from “the south stopping at stunning Western Australian attractions and destinations along the way as we head north - everyone is invited! We encourage you to come along for the ride and learn more about what our amazing state has on offer. It will all still be here when the time is right to travel again, we promise it will be worth the wait!”

Already, the tour has stopped at Albany for a glide across the region’s “granite cliffsides and sheltered bays. Then [took] the plunge into the great Southern Ocean, spotting flat sunfish and killer whales.”

It’s also stopped at the Margaret River Wine Region to see how the varietals are grown before hiking to Cape track and “splashing in the shallows with friendly Hamelin Bay stingrays.”

And, it stopped at the stunning Yallingup region in the South West where the tourism board explored “the depths of Ngilgi Cave in Yallingup, its impressive geological formations and its meaning to the local Aboriginal people.”

David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality Experiences come to Australian Museum from 8 April

David Attenborough's First Life VR and David Attenborough's Great Barrier Reef Dive VR debut in Australia through Samsung Gear VR.

THURSDAY 24 MARCH 2016, SYDNEY: The Australian Museum (AM) will be the first venue outside of the UK to host David Attenborough’s First Life VR and David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef Dive VR – fully immersive experiences created by pioneering content studio Alchemy VR. These screenings will employ cutting-edge technology from Samsung to put you side-by-side with the world-famous naturalist.

David Attenborough’s First Life VR and David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef Dive VR , presented at the Australian Museum in partnership with Samsung, are the first two nature documentaries made exclusively for VR by Alchemy. The experiences premiere from 8 April, and visitors to the museum will be able to watch one or both with ticket prices starting from $15.

Both experiences represent the latest in innovative entertainment, having come direct to the AM in Sydney after the premiere, sell-out season at London’s Natural History Museum.

Equipped with the Samsung Gear VR headset and Galaxy S6 smartphones, visitors will be able to travel through time and deep in the ocean, experiencing the natural world in brilliant, 360-degree cinematic life.

“Virtual reality is a powerful new way of transporting us to the most extraordinary places on our planet, and David Attenborough is the perfect guide,” Kim McKay AO, CEO of the Australian Museum , said.

“ David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality Experiences puts the AM at the forefront of museum innovation and revolutionises the way people experience museums.”

Anthony Geffen, CEO of Atlantic Productions and Alchemy VR added, “These experiences are truly trailblazing, and we are proud to be bringing them to Australian audiences in partnership with the Australian Museum. It’s an incredible opportunity to use technology to excite and educate people about the natural world.”

The VR experience, for visitors aged 13+, is a major coup for the AM, which has a long association with David Attenborough. Last year, Attenborough visited the AM’s Lizard Island Research Station 270km north of Cairns as part of filming for David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef documentary.

“In 2016, more Australians will experience virtual reality through the Samsung Gear VR than ever before,” said Philip Newton, Corporate Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, Samsung Electronics Australia.

“VR is opening new frontiers for how Australians create, consume and interact with content – and what better way to be fully-immersed in our innovative technology than through these experiences.”

David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef Dive VR uses real-world footage and a host of pioneering technologies to shed new light on this magnificent habitat. Visitors will take a 360-degree, virtual reality tour deep beneath the waves, with Attenborough as a personal guide through the vibrant corals, darting fish and deadly sharks in the great natural wonder of the world. In a state-of-the-art submersible, Attenborough guides us through a wonderland, which has over 3000 reef systems and forms one of the most important natural resources on Earth. It is an extraordinary opportunity to come face to face with the incredible diversity and abundance of the Great Barrier Reef, and see how researchers are using historic corals, predicting how the reef will react to environmental changes.

In David Attenborough’s First Life VR , visitors travel back 540 million years as Attenborough reveals the dawn of life on Earth and introduces you to its earliest inhabitants, exploring ancient oceans and interacting with extinct sea creatures. Long-extinct animals such as the whimsically built Opabinia , the fearsome looking Anomalocaris and the spiny, worm-like Hallucigenia will be brought vividly alive in a fully immersive CG VR experience.

Our work and scope

We travelled into the Flinders Ranges to find and photograph specific locations for Ocean Park in Hong Kong. The desired results were eight massive wall murals to make the visitors feel as though they were in South Australia, the largest being forty metres wide by seven and a half metres high. We successfully delivered all eight wall murals which are now on display. We have travelled thousands of kilometres all over South Australia for the SA Government to capture and produce VR displays of national parks and major tourist venues in order to boost our tourist numbers. Hundreds of these views are now available for Oculus Rift and VR glasses. Our VR displays are being used all over Adelaide and South Australia to promote our state as a desirable location to visit, holiday, work and live.

Research and Development

We continually work to produce unique VR applications and to initiate relationships in order to promote the potential of VR across a wide range of industries. We are currently negotiating the use of VR solutions with state government departments, universities and private industry groups. We have worked with government, local councils, tourism organisations, tourism operators, export organisations, hotels, sports centres, sporting event organisers, data centres, restaurants, real estate agents, tourist accommodation, private clubs, architects, universities, media providers, limousine hire companies, heritage centres, sanctuaries, golf clubs, wedding venues, caravan parks, fishing charters, medical centres, aged care providers and many others.

The 'paradigm shift' of virtual reality tourism

The technology has made a paradigm shift, much as it did with the printing press.

Launched in New York earlier this year, Tourism Australia's 'Explore Australia in 360' program offers prospective travellers the ability to navigate through a range of the country's most striking landmarks and coastlines.

'Consumers have changed quite a lot and to get their attention these days is never easy,' says Matt McInnes, marketing manager for Tourism Australia.

'Virtual reality really lends itself to appealing to consumers globally, and in particular our eastern markets, which are a core area for growth for us in the future.

'It's something that other media types are not able to convey to people who we're trying to encourage to come to Australia.'

Shooting for the interactive videos required an enormous amount of pre-production, underwater cameras and in many cases, the use of drones.

But McInnes is confident the campaign represents a sound investment, and says traffic and engagement on Tourism Australia's website has spiked since the virtual reality launch.

Professor Jim Blascovich from the University of California, Santa Barbara, says the increased accessibility in virtual reality represents a landmark moment in the media landscape.

'It's really the technology getting better, getting cheaper and allowing us to have deeper, richer virtual experiences,' says Blascovich.

'The technology has made a paradigm shift, much as it did with the printing press.'

If anyone in the world can access immersive experiences of Australia without ever leaving their home though, might such campaigns actually dissuade tourists?

'I'm sure Tourism Australia has thought about this—why come if you can experience it virtually?' he says.

'That's the yin and the yang of it. I'm sure they've also thought, "let's not give the whole store away."'

Blascovich, who has studied virtual reality for decades, says the potential for similar virtual reality technologies to be applied for education purposes is fascinating.

'There's reasons to go to other cultures other than tourism. I think it's just drawing the possible connections between all the individuals who inhabit this planet,' he says.

'When you can connect with almost any other person in the world with one virtual reality call, that is paradigm shifting.'

The Grand Canyon VR Experience

In The Grand Canyon VR Experience (by Immersive Entertainment), you sit in a virtual motorized kayak ride through the Grand Canyon. Tailor the tour to your preferences by selecting either a sunlit or moonlit experience and controlling the ride's speed.

While you cruise along, you'll enjoy the sights and sounds of procedurally generated, artificially intelligent wildlife. Attract and feed the virtual fish as you navigate the waterways.

The ride is on rails, so you can't steer the kayak. However, you can stop at various points and enjoy the scenery by using the throttle speed controls of your motorized kayak or by exiting at scenic rest stops.

The tour is short, and there's no historical background information for history buffs. Still, it is a fun ride perfect for someone new to VR.

This tour requires one of the following virtual reality headsets: HTC Vive, Oculus Rift , or Valve Index .

Realities is a VR travel app that allows you to explore scanned and modeled real-world environments. The environments aren't just 360-degree photos; these locations were captured with specialized scanning equipment, allowing for immersive rendering in virtual reality.

The user interface is a giant globe you rotate with your VR controllers. Once you decide on the place you want to visit, tap the area on the virtual globe, and you are instantly whisked away to the exotic locale.

One interesting destination is a cell in the infamous Alcatraz prison. When you arrive, you're greeted by an unseen narrator, presumably a former prisoner in the cell next to you, who recalls their experiences. It's museum-like and an educational adventure worth having.

There are other destinations of varying size and complexity, and the experience is updated with new realities regularly.

This experience is compatible with the HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality .

Titans of Space PLUS

Great soundtrack.

Detailed 3D visuals.

Impressive sense of scale.

Flying through space makes some users feel nauseated.

No improvements since late 2019.

Do you like planetariums? Have you always wished they were more realistic? If you've ever dreamed of riding in a spaceship and exploring the solar system and beyond, Titans of Space PLUS (by DrashVR LLC) helps make this a reality—at least a virtual one).

The original Titans of Space was one of the first polished virtual reality experiences available; it created a lot of buzz about all the potential VR had to offer.

This app provides a theme park-style ride through the solar system and beyond, allowing you to control the pace of the experience. Factoids about the planets and moons are provided throughout your journey, as are distances and other measurements of interest.

The sense of scale of the planets and moons is truly awe-inspiring and gives a unique perspective only astronauts usually get to have.

This title runs in both standard and VR modes. It does not require a VR headset. It is compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Everest VR (from Sólfar Studios) is an interactive Mount Everest VR tourism experience.

You'll experience Mount Everest in five iconic scenes. Prepare for your expedition at Basecamp, traverse the terrifying Khumbu Icefalls, spend the night at Camp 4, ascend the perilous Hillary Step, and finally conquer the summit of Everest.

After completing your first summit attempt, unlock God Mode to reach a unique vantage point of the Himalayas that's only possible in VR. Towering over the mountain range, this is a stunning VR diorama.

EVEREST VR is a must if you're into mountain climbing but don't like its possible death and frostbite aspects.

The VR Museum of Fine Art

Lots of content.

Educational experience.

Only takes about 20 minutes to experience.

If you've ever wanted to peruse a museum at your own pace with no limits on how close you can get to the artwork, then The VR Museum of Fine Art (free from Finn Sinclair) is for you.

This free app holds amazing educational value with incredibly detailed scans of some of the world's most famous paintings and sculptures. Look at the brushstrokes of Monet's Water Lilies or take a 360-degree tour of Michelangelo's David. This is an art lover's delight.  

The experience makes you feel as if you're visiting a museum, complete with a pamphlet map to help you navigate your way around the exhibits.

theBlu (from Wevr INC .) is a collection of virtual reality-based underwater experiences that make you feel as if you're literally in the tank of a huge aquarium exhibit.

Stand on the deck of a sunken ship while a gargantuan whale swims by and looks you straight in the eye or swim in a sea of bioluminescent jellyfish. There's no need for expensive scuba equipment or diving classes, or even to leave your living room, for that matter.

The level of detail in this app is amazing, and the sense of scale (especially during the whale encounter in the first episode) is jaw-dropping.

Compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, Valve Index, and Windows Mixed Reality.

Google Earth VR

Amazing street view VR.

Travel the world virtually.

Impressive, vast experience.

Can be slow to load.

Lacks a search feature.

May cause motion sickness.

When Google Earth was released many years ago, everyone marveled at the novelty of finding and viewing their house from satellite imagery. Now, Google Earth VR (free from Google) lets you see your house from space and virtually fly to it and stand in your front yard or on your rooftop.

Change the sun's position, scale objects to any size you like, and fly around the world. The detail levels depend on what you're trying to view. For example, tourist destinations are likely to have more detailed geospatial imagery than rural areas. There is so much to see, and Google offers virtual tours to help you get started.

Google has even added several comfort features to prevent virtual travel sickness in this must-see virtual reality app.
