Intimate as ever and over 100 years old (built in 1912), the historic Sheldon Concert Hall and its Art Galleries are all about “live music, arts, events and culture.”

Once home to the Ethical Society of St. Louis (a humanist congregation), the building was named after this establishment’s founder, Walter Sheldon.

Over the decades, the space has been used as a community center, music hall and concert venue, and circa 1988, its Arts Foundation was established. In 1998 an adjoining annex was purchased and extra facilities were added, including The Sheldon Art Galleries and the sculpture garden.

Today, it houses the 712-seater Concert Hall where icons like B.B. King have performed, the Ballroom, The Konneker Room and the Steward Family Plaza with its vertical garden.

You can make your selection on which carriage or trolley you and your party would like to take a tour in, and you can even meet the team of Percherons which pull the carriages. You might be getting able to see St. Louis from a car, but you will really be able to  see  St. Louis in style from a trolley or a carriage!

The city museum is built in a one hundred year old warehouse. The inside is crafted into different cities, castles, slides, bridges, and more! There are also ball pits, a train, a school bus, and a Ferris wheel.

Their website gives you the option to tour the City Museum via a drone video!  There are no maps because the layout is constantly changing. There are also secret passageways and tunnels that wouldn’t be secrets for very long if they were identified on a map.

Coupled with the 60 different butterfly species, over 150 tropical plants can be seen while visiting this attraction. The 8,000-square-foot Conservatory is open year-round for family exploration, school field trips, and everyday fun. The Cathedral Basilica is one of the oldest cathedrals in the United States. It was originally built in 1727. The cathedral has four chapels, which each have a special purpose. Blessed Sacrament Chapel is strictly for private prayers and no pictures are allowed inside.

Blessed virgin’s Chapel has mosaics that depict the life of mary and her role in the church. The All Saints Chapel has mosaics on the walls that depict the saints, and a striking statue of St. Joseph. The All Souls Chapel has a risen Christ statue and also buried beneath the crypt are several cardinals and archbishops.

The mosaic work and general interior design create an ambient environment for Christian worshipers all over the world to confess, worship and pray. This historic site was home to the great General Ulysses S. Grant and his wife. Now it is a historic site, available to both locals and tourists.

There is a welcome center that features a gift shop, large restrooms, and an optional educational film. Also, there is a museum on the property, where you will see several artifacts like Grant's actual uniform from his civil war days.

The Campbell house built in 1822, is the only building left in the town of york. It was then refurbished a little in 1943 and turned into a museum made open to the public.

You get to take walk around the building where in the kitchen you will see the original ice box and stove, The bells hanging on the walls used to communicate in the house for when food was ready. There is also a gift shop where you can replica items of the Campbell's possessions.

Really enjoyed our STL trolley tour! The driver shared so many local details and stories- a great way to see highlights of the city!

Red trolley

This was an easy way to see the entire city and learn a little history. I was the youngest person on the tour (not to my surprise) and it was packed. Windows opened which was a plus!

As I was looking through the "Where Magazine", I ran across the ad for this tour. After checking the website and the reviews, I thought... sure - why not? Reserving a spot on their website was very easy. The website is very user friendly. The receipt and the ticket was sent to my phone immediately. The pick up location was very easy to find since it's at the Lumiere Casino. The trolley tour started right on time. The driver/guide was very informative about the city and nearby sites. Overall, the tour was about 90 minutes long. There were couple of times where we were able to get off of the trolley. I wish I took this tour on my first day and not the second day of my trip there. After this tour, I placed some of the locations on my "Try List" for my next visit to St. Louis. The trolley was very comfortable and at the right temperature. The volume was just right. Overall, a great tour and I would recommend this tour.

We took the tour today. We've been on many of these types of tours and generally seek them out and enjoy them. We arrived about 30 minutes early and the bus was already there. There were about a dozen of us. The driver and tour guide were the same person, a nice man in his 60's. He said he grew up in St Louis, moved away, and came back about 20 years ago. He did an acceptable job on the tour. His voice is close to a monotone so it lacks much excitement. He told about a tenth of the jokes that we normally here. Some people hate the puns and jokes, but I think it should be part of the shtick. We spent far more time out of the downtown area than I thought, and we heard very little about building architecture. The tour didn't indicate it would be focused on architecture, I guess I was just hoping. The trip was fine, not great, not terrible. 3 stars is about right.

My husband had to get me out of the house for a surprise birthday party (I was) and bought tickets for the St. Louis Fun Tour bus. You can catch it at the Lumiere casino. Even though we are both from St. Louis, I thought this would be fun. Sometimes it's great to play the tourist in your own city. It turned out to be quite a hot day in October - 85 degrees in fact. We drove through downtown, Forest Park, the Delmar Loop and down millionaire's row (Lindell Blvd. across from Forest Park). Our driver was very knowledgeable. It was fun, however, there were two things wrong with it. The sound system was horrible as was the air conditioner on the bus. Our driver knew the air did not work correctly and when he was talking he had to turn it down so we could hear him. Even when it was blasting, it was just hot air. The handicap space rattled so much that we could not hear him. If I hadn't been from the city itself, I would have been ticked off about that tour. Would I come back on this tour? It's worth the money if you're from out of town but try to go on a cool day.

The tour guide was super nice and tried to interact with everyone. With that said, this tour would have been much better if it was a hop on hop off. Also, it was raining and for some reason there was water dripping from the ceiling onto some of the seats. Overall, it is a decent option (because it is your only option).

Solid 4/5. We got a bit confused where to park. We parked in a parking garage next to the casino and the worker said we had to be a member of something to park there and members parked free. We said we were there for a tour bus and she was confused and let us in anyways. So we ended up not paying for parking here. We walked through the casino and to some large glass doors and the bus was parked out front. The older gentleman driver/guide seemed to not like technology as he didn't look at our reservations/QR code and just asked how many and how much we paid. No names or anything. It's a bit of a tight squeeze as my husband and I are a bit larger but doable. It was air conditioned which was nice. He would let it run a while and let it cool down and turn it off so we could hear him better. It was SO MUCH information being thrown at you which I think is good! Larry was very knowledgeable of the buildings and the roads. We drove right through the city with ease. He grew up there and told a few stories about when he was a kid. He was quite the jokester as well which I enjoy. It was a nice way to see all the things to do and not have to worry about driving yourself. I would go back!

As far as yours go, it's a great way to get a feel for the city. It would have been nice to get a bit more history if the city. The tour is $22 and has three departure times. You buy the ticket at the casino gift shop. Overall it was worth it for me but could be more inclusuve.

"The Best First Thing to do in St. Louis" was the advertisement & I agree. As we rode through StL I was amazed at what I did not know & what I have forgotten. St Louis has many buildings and unique (many times funny) history to make a city proud. The tours leave Lumiere Casino (tickets at the gift shop or on-line) at 10 AM, noon, 2 PM and 4 PM- except Monday. This should be an official yelp event soon! The tour driver talked about St Louis river exploration history, trade history, baseball, brick, Blues music, "first skyscraper", 1904 World's Fair and the rebirth of the city (the Loop, Millionaire's Row, Washington Ave, SLU, Wash U, etc). He showed & talked about the old & new Basilicas (public church- I did not know the meaning). There was many jokes & funny local stories (consumption per capita of beer & the invention of the toasted ravioli, etc). I would highly recommend this to anyone from first time tourists to old sarcastic know it all like me. The driver was very interactive and asked many questions. For the OCD or "devil's advocate" people, he might be fuzzy on a few facts and missed some places because of the short tour route... I would just set back & smile or politely correct (like Wash U not having a good athletic program http://bearsports.wustl.edu/AthleticsDept/AthleticStaff/Pages/NancyFahey.aspx ) Overall, he did a excellent job in the limited time and us being one of the first tours. I was invited for a short preview of this tour to celebrate a friends 70th birthday. I hopped on the enclosed, a/c and wood lined trolley at the North entrance to Lumiere Casino. There were a few detours and he allowed the birthday party to talk amongst themselves so it was not the "official tour", but I still walked away impressed. The trolley itself has two large a/c units that almost froze us out till the driver adjusted the settings. The seats are wood benches with cushions on them and was fairly comfortable for the short trip. There was a handicap lift at the back of the trolley. As we left, one of the riders made a deal to rent the trolley for another special event. There are repeat customers already for this new business! Note- Later, at 3 Monkeys for a benifit, I was informed I should check out Washington University Women's Volleyball http://bearsports.wustl.edu/AthleticsDept/AthleticStaff/Pages/RichLuenemann.aspx and overall championships http://wustl.edu/athletics/

Took a bus tour with Larry. He's so knowledgeable and passionate about St Louis. The tour lasted 90 minutes and we went all over St Louis hitting all of the major landmarks. He was flexible with the stops and allowed us to take pictures at Forest Park and the Cathedral Basilica.

1. Gateway Arch National Park

While the Arch is the major attraction at Gateway Arch National Park , you’ll want to start a visit with a stop at The Museum at the Gateway Arch. An Arch experience starts with a short ride to the to the top in four-person egg-shaped pods. From the top, 630 feet above the ground, visitors peer through the slots of the Arch for views of St. Louis and the Illinois side of the Mississippi River stretching for about 30 miles. More than 100,000 people made their way through St. Louis’ Union Station during the heyday of rail travel. And though the last train passed through this station in the 1970s, the station’s limestone exterior and Romanesque design has remained a part of the cityscape. Since its rail hub days, Union Station has tried on identities ranging from shopping center to entertainment complex, but nothing thrived here until someone reimagined the space as a giant aquarium plus a ropes course, mini golf course, and home to a Ferris wheel. Today, Union Station is once again a major attraction in the city.

With more than 13,000 animals, the St. Louis Aquarium anchors the revitalized Union Station. Considered one of the best zoos in the world, the St. Louis Zoo is home to about 16,000 animals—plan to spend an entire day here—including African painted dogs, Amur tigers, red pandas, and a variety of primates and bears, including polar bears.

Check out the sea lion exhibit, where you may find these marine mammals resting atop the underwater tunnel; and the penguins, which waddle and play just a few feet from you in an open-air environment. The zoo also features unique attractions like the Conservation Carousel (ADA compliant), Zooline Railroad, 4D Theater, and Stingrays at Caribbean Cove.

While the St. Louis Zoo offers free admission, there is paid parking and some of the exhibits do require a fee.

4. Magic House

Located inside a Victorian-era mansion, Magic House is a children’s museum that offers learning experiences while children play with interactive exhibits. From fun with science at the STEAM exhibit to exploring the world of nature, the beloved Magic House in Kirkwood features more than 20 permanent and special exhibits for families to explore.

5. Missouri Botanical Garden

The oldest botanical gardens still active in the United States, the Missouri Botanical Gardens have called St. Louis home since 1859. A respite in the busy city, the botanical gardens features several outdoor gardens—picture Japanese and Chinese gardens as well as a Victorian garden—surrounded by lovely Victorian era buildings. While you’re there, don’t miss a stroll through the Rose Garden with its variety of colorful roses.

Indoor attractions at the Missouri Botanical Garden include the Climatron, which is a geologic dome used to house more than 2,800 plants and trees in a tropical forest. The Botanical Gardens also hosts special exhibits, such as Chihuly blown-glass art and Chinese lanterns.

6. Grant’s Farm

A gift to future President Ulysses S. Grant and his wife Julia, Grant’s Farm mixes history and nature. While the Grants’ log cabin is located at the farm, the family only lived there for a short period. Now owned by the Busch family, public trolley tours are offered of the family’s mansion.

But, the main attractions at the popular Grant’s Farm may be the wildlife. While the famous Clydesdale horses are kept on site in historic stables, visitors are urged to reserve a spot on an open-air vehicle that includes a drive through Deer Park wildlife reserve, where they can see animals such as bison, black buck antelope, zebras, and longhorn cattle up-close. Be sure to grab an ice cream cone full of pellets to feed animals by hand.

7. City Museum

Exploring City Museum is like finding a giant playground for kids of all ages. The well-reviewed City Museum has fun for both adults and children, with structures that range from a treehouse and caves on the first floor to a slide that covers several floors. An aquarium features giant replicas of sharks and other marine life along with fish from around the world.

Explore three stories of curiosities that feature everything from a giant pencil to classic architecture. Outdoor attractions include a rooftop slide, Ferris wheel, and a school bus that extends over the edge of the building.

8. Riverboat Cruise

Enjoy a one-hour Riverboat Cruise on the Mississippi River, passing some of the city’s historical landmarks such as Laclede’s Landing and the Gateway Arch, as well as taking on views of downtown St. Louis. Riverboat cruises include a daily tour, dinner cruise, brunch cruise, and specialty tours, such as a jazz cruise. Note that it’s a good idea to book this popular attraction in advance, since tickets sell out quickly.

Missouri-based Drury Hotels offer a family-friendly experience at a comfortable price. Opening its first hotel in 1973, the chain now has more than 150 hotels in 26 states. Of course, the area has a variety of hotel options in all areas and price ranges.

Maplewood Summer Concert Series
