L.P. is an American pop/rock artist from New York City who is also a songwriter. Singer L.P. was born Laura Pergolizzi and has had a wide ranging musical career signing with various labels throughout her career such as Island Def Jam Music Group and SoBe Entertainment.

In her early days she was first featured on songs with the band Cracker when David Lowery spotted her talent in 1998 and put her on some of the bands hidden tracks. Her powerful voice has a haunting vibrato with a beautiful eerie quality that peaks equally in all her wide ranging tones. L.P. has gained a reputation for her bellowing vocal cords that stay strong in even the highest notes.

There are few artists to compare her unique sound too and she knows how to capture an audience in a way that few can. Her casual style and small stature can be deceiving but those who have seen her live know not to be mislead.

She comes bringing the thunder right out of the gate and from the first moment she steps on stage you will find yourself hypnotized in the silky river of her melodious voice.

I discovered LP in October 2018 and instantly became a huge fan... I was ecstatic to learn she was coming to Houston and I bought 2 tickets (for me and my husband) to, what ended up being, a SOLD OUT show last night!

All I can say is she performed like a SUPERSTAR!!! She did most of the songs on her new album that was just released, and they all sounded like hits!! The venue wasn’t very big, but the energy was amazing and everyone there sang along to every song. I honestly left feeling that is was a privilege to hear such a talented artist perform - I don’t understand why she isn’t more well known. She writes all of her songs and plays the guitar, ukulele, harmonica, and, oh the whistling!!! She wasn’t a big talker, but had loads of energy on the stage and enteracted with the audience brilliantly!

Well the opening act was OK for the 1st song but then everything sounded the same and it became a very long hour. After that it seemed that the stage crew had not done any work before the show because it took almost 40 Min to get the stage ready. When LP finally came out I was not in my most upbeat of moods but before the first song had finished she had not only changed my mood but made me feel privileged to be there. The concert was VERY GOOD, she sounded amazing and her band was on cue every step of the way. It appeared that the audience was miked and some of the screams / shouts amplified back, those decibels were a bit high and unnecessary as the crown was very receptive to a great performance. I've been bragging to people about the concert and look forward to our next LP concert.

There are no words, no picture, or no video that can depict the awesomeness of this woman! I felt like I transcended into a whole new level of existence, and will be forever changed by by the magnitude of her presence and her voice. I am still reeling, and unable to focus on anything else! She is a lyrical genius whose music is poetry in action.

Also, I am so glad to have met so many wonderful people on her show in Fort Lauderdale. I thoroughly enjoyed hanging out and sharing the anticipation with other LP fans! It was a beautiful night...and an experience of a lifetime..

We saw LP at U Street Music Hall in DC on May 28, 2017. LP was one of those rare performers who is not only a virtuoso at her craft (amazing vocals), but also had charisma. She wasn't ultra-talkative, but she still connected with the audience, and everyone had a fantastic time. It was a really impressive performance that went on and on, in a good way. There was a lot of singing along and dancing in the audience. I think of LP as a relatively new artist, but she apparently has plenty of songs in her playbook. She was on stage for at least an hour, and we skipped the encore.

So we are on the other side of the globe and havent had the privilege to see LP live. I've just started tracking her in the hope that one day in the near future ill be notified of an Australian Tour. I run an LP Australia page both on Facebook and Instagram so any Aussies out there that would love to see this amazing artist perform down under, come and like the page. Lets build this under acknowledged artist the fame she deserves

Me and my syster loved the way LP sings and interact with the spectators. Her voice is so special and strong. We really felt her sensibility, with a very strong drive. Love the women. I did not really new her (my sister invited me), except for the hit "Lost on You". Her songs are about love, faith, and I guess resilience. The MTELUS was packed with a "beautiful" montrealers croud on that 28th of february. A night to remember.

LP is an incredible live performer, I'm in love all over again! The visuals were gorgeous for the smallish stage and her voice was so powerful and beautiful. You can tell she puts so much energy into each song. The opening act Korey Dane was funny and played some great songs, I'm a fan now! I'll definitely be going to see LP the next time she tours :)

LP is definitely one of the most gifted, talented, entertaining, gracious and audience-engaging artists I've ever had the pleasure to see live - a thoroughly mesmerizing show. Her vocal ability is almost supernatural, and she whistles like Andrew Bird and catches like Buster Posey. Looking forward to seeing her again, soon and as much as possible!

Why see LP - Laura Pergolizzi?

Love lines tour.

Laura Pergolizzi, or LP to you and me, isn't your usual singer-songwriter. Instead of hiding behind elongated metaphors LP tells your straight, there's nowhere to hide. Perhaps this is why this eclectic artist has worked with some of the biggest names in music and has amassed a seriously dedicated fan base.

Having worked tirelessly over the last decade LP has certainly been making waves. Performing at some of the world's biggest festivals (Coachella, Oshega, Outside Lands and Mad Cool, to name just a few) LP has also written hit after hit, not just for themself, but also for the likes of Cher, Rhianna, the Backstreet Boys, and Christina Aguilera.

With their third and fourth albums hitting the top ten spot in the US Heat Charts LP has also been stealing the show across the pond, where her fourth album, Lost On You, achieved Platinum status in Poland. With their smooth Indie Rock sounds, LP transports you out of this hectic world and into one full of calm and tranquility.

From New York to ‘Churches’: LP’s career in five key moments

Ahead of Laura Pergolizzi’s 2023 tour of the east coast, we recap the ups and downs of the singer-songwriter’s eventful journey

LP

In partnership with Bluesfest Touring

Over the years, LP – aka singer-songwriter Laura Pergolizzi –  has carved out a career that stands as testament to her willpower and perseverance.

She also has hits for days – which she’ll bring to Australia next April when she plays Byron Bay Bluesfest 2023 and her own headline dates in Sydney and Melbourne .

Ahead of her return Down Under, we’ve rounded up five key moments of LP’s career that show how far she’s come.

A New York state of mind

Laura Pergolizzi moved from Long Island to New York City and promptly changed her moniker to LP in 2004. At this time she’d released two independent albums that had seen her work with Dave Lowery of the band Cracker and songwriting powerhouse Linda Perry , formerly of 4 Non-Blondes.

Though reasonably well received, success had eluded LP and she worked in a bar to make ends meet. It was there that she met music industry veteran Marvis Howell, who offered her a publishing deal. She was soon mixing with major songwriters such as Billy Steinberg ( Madonna , Cyndi Lauper ), Desmond Child ( KISS , Bon Jovi , Alice Cooper ) and Andreas Carlsson ( *NSYNC ).

“I was the kid in the room in these sessions, sitting at the feet of the biggest songwriters in the world,” recalled LP – who went from writing about 20 songs a year to around 100 – to Spin in 2021 .

Recommended

“It was a great day when I realised it was about volume. Because that means there’s no end. Even if you write a hit song, you just have to move on and write more songs.”

The SXSW bidding war

A live performance at the 2006 South by Southwest music conference in Austin, Texas, sparked a major label bidding war for LP. She ended up signing with the Island Def Jam Music Group, however for the first time – and certainly not the last – there were differences of opinion about her artistic direction and presentation, and the contract was ended.

“That’s why there were so many false starts for me,” LP told the Sydney Morning Herald in 2020. “I don’t think they could understand the indie nature of what I do.”

Rihanna drinks to that

The songs that were intended for an LP album release instead found new homes with the Backstreet Boys , plus TV shows such as Out Of Nowhere and MTV’s The Hills . Slowly, they began to cement LP’s status as a go-to songwriter for artists and various soundtracks.

LP had her songs recorded by artists such as Heidi Montag and Erik Hassle but the real breakthrough came in 2010 when she co-wrote ‘Cheers (Drink To That)’ which was featured on Rihanna’s fifth album, ‘Loud’. The song features a sample of Avril Lavigne’s 2002 song, ‘I’m With You’, and became a Top 10 hit internationally.

“Getting a Rihanna song was nuts,” LP – who also went on to write for Christina Aguilera and Cher – told The Independent . “I was invited to a session by my friend, we wrote the song in a few hours. I feel like emotional content is the most important part of any song, for any artist.

“Every artist wants to connect with the listener, but it’s a daunting task to walk into a room full of strangers and write something from the heart.”

The Warner Bros. exit

It wasn’t until April 2012 that LP released her first major label album, ‘Into The Wild: Live At East West Studios’. She immediately embarked on a rigorous touring schedule that included appearances at Lollapalooza , Bonnaroo, SXSW and Sonic Boom. She recorded the follow-up, ‘Forever For Now’, which was given a pop sheen by veteran producer and then-Warner Bros chairman, Rob Cavallo.

When the time came in 2015 for LP’s third album, she played three tracks to the Warner Bros hierarchy. It didn’t go well.

“I literally could tell the second they looked at me,” LP told Forbes Magazine in 2020, “they just didn’t get it. I could just see the vacancy in their eyes. They were like, ‘ yeah… um, that’s great but we’re going to move on’ .”

LP was stunned but again persevered, signing with the Vagrant label. She released the fittingly titled ‘Lost On You’ album in late 2016. The title track/single attained one billion streams and went to number one  in 17 countries, mostly around Europe, and the Warner Bros bosses were left eating crow.

Enter ‘Churches’

In late 2021, after a year-long delay to write more material, LP released her sixth album, ‘Churches’. Released though the independent Canadian label Dine Alone Records, the album saw LP relishing the freedom to be true to herself and to pursue the uniqueness of her art without being told how to sound or act.

“Now I’m finally able to do my own things without the pressure of a major label trying to corral me into some other group of artists of a similar nature,” she told the Sydney Morning Herald . “That’s when things went right.”

‘Churches’ is an album that LP is particularly enthusiastic to tour behind. “It’s cool when you have a body of work that hasn’t been delivered live,” she told Glide Magazine recently. “After what we’ve all been through, I feel like this is more special.

“A lot of the trauma people have been through comes through in this record, especially my own feelings about it. Your fans like you for a number of reasons. They connect with you on a personality level. They want to hear what you’re feeling.”

LP performs at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney on April 1, Northcote Theatre in Melbourne on April 2 and Byron Bay Bluesfest on April 6. Find tickets here

Their cutting-edge pop-rock stylings have made them an icon of the LGBTQ+ community.

On Tuesday, LP rocks The Anthem in D.C. for the “Love Lines” tour, named after their new album that dropped in September.

“We’re playing that whole album, which feels really good,” LP told WTOP.

“There’s just a freshness, like a freedom to it somehow. There’s always kind of a looking within vibe, but this one in particular it feels more so than usual, but there’s also something really easy about it. I mean, it’s the first record I’ve ever written single. … You’ll definitely hear some ‘Lost on You’ for sure, but we’re rotating in all kinds of songs. … I sprinkle in the hits.”

Born in Brooklyn in 1981, LP grew up in a nonmusical family and had to chart their own path.

“My mom listened to opera and my dad didn’t really care, he liked oldies channels like Elvis, Johnny Cash and stuff like that, but his musical opinion did not matter TBH,” LP said.

“As a result, I’m not one of those people who wakes up and listens to music. Maybe because I have music in my head already, but I don’t put on music until later in the day, so I would not say I come from a family that was jacked about music. [My dad] didn’t believe in doing music.”

Instead, LP’s music career launched with the help of David Lowery of the rock band Cracker, who featured LP on the band’s fourth album “Gentleman’s Blues” (1998) in the hidden track “Cinderella.”

“He had a tour manager that wanted to be my manager at the time and he loved my voice, I started singing some backup, then he asked me to co-write a song he had started called ‘Cinderella,'” LP said. “I went out like a little mascot on their tour and it got me going, then I got a record deal and I asked him to produced it — and he did.”

After Lowery produced LP’s debut album “Heart-Shaped Scar” (2001), LP next ventured off on their own to record their second album “Suburban Sprawl & Alcohol” (2004).

“I realized very early on that I didn’t really want to embark on the ‘white girl blues singer’ thing,” LP said. “I was fascinated with songwriting the most. I had a really hard time picturing myself getting somewhere as an artist, I’ll be honest, because I don’t look the way I’m supposed to or act the way I’m supposed to — and I don’t want to.”

Instead, LP initially focused on writing pop songs for other world-famous artists, including Cher, Rihanna, the Backstreet Boys, Leona Lewis, Mylène Farmer, Céline Dion and Christina Aguilera.

“I was like, yo, this is cool!” LP said. “I could be on the low-key tip like, ‘Hey, what do you do for a living?’ ‘I write songs for people.’ ‘Oh, sick. Like for who?’ ‘For these people.’ I really liked the subtly of that. … Then I got signed to these new managers. … [One] was Rihanna’s manager from the beginning before Jay-Z and Roc Nation took her over in 2010. … He was like, ‘We think you’re not done being an artist, so it would be great if you kept writing for you.'”

LP wrote their third album “Forever for Now” (2014), featuring the song “Into the Wild.”

“That’s when I really found myself as an artist,” LP said.

“‘Into the Wild’ kind of embarked me on being an artist again. I went into a three-year stint with Warner Brothers. At the end of that stint, when everybody that believed in me got fired or left, I had ‘Lost on You’ and a couple of other songs on that record that had been [scrapped]. I played the new people at Warner Bros. ‘Lost on You,’ ‘Strange’ and ‘Muddy Waters’ and they dropped me.”

LP found a new home for these songs by signing with the label Vagrant for their fourth album “Lost on You” (2016). The title track remains a powerhouse sonic experience (listen below), catapulting LP to three more successful albums with “Heart to Mouth” (2018), “Churches” (2021) and the aforementioned “Love Lines” (2023).

Along the way, LP has found unlikely success in countries that are not always LGBTQ-friendly in Eastern Europe and Latin America. They filmed the video for “Dayglow” in Czechia to advocate for marriage equality there, while in Russia, oligarchs have come to LP’s shows to stand side-by-side with LGBTQ+ teens not yet out in the open.

“I just believe in people,” LP said. “Religion and governments, I don’t believe in either of them. I believe in people. I think when you come up to me, my energy says just that. I’m about love and connection with people through that and I don’t really have time for a bunch of dudes that think they own the land or people or anything. … You don’t own s—.”

Through it all, LP remains defiant of anyone who wants to tell others what to do.

“It might sound like I’ve got a chip on my shoulder, you bet your a — I’ve got a chip on my shoulder!” LP said.

“It’s for a reason. It’s inspiring to me and I just keep going. I have respect for myself for keeping going and I would implore anybody to do the same because it feels good at the end of the day. No one’s going to come to your house and pull a guitar out of your hand. Just keep going and writing and believing that you can do it, because you can.”

by Mac Wilson

November 17, 2023

New York artist Laura Pergolizzi — best known by their stage name LP — visited The Current studio to play songs from their latest album, Love Lines . Following the session, LP sat down for a conversation with Mac Wilson, where they chatted about what it was like to work with songwriter Dan Wilson, and how they and their bandmates set up a studio in the Cayman Islands where Love Lines was recorded.

Listen to and watch the full session above and read a transcript below.

Interview Transcript

Mac Wilson: Hello, friends, my name is Mac Wilson from Minnesota Public Radio, The Current, and I'm welcoming LP to The Current studio. Hello,

LP: How's it going?

Mac Wilson: How are you today? You're in town playing at the Palace Theatre tonight?

Mac Wilson: So the new record is out now called Love Lines . It's been a couple of years in the making, but like, it feels like, as we've welcomed artists back into The Current studio over the last couple of years, we say, "Oh, well, this is the one that you were working on during the COVID 19 pandemic," but you've put out a couple of records in that interim.

LP: That was the one before that.

Mac Wilson: Right! So you've already got another one in there, so we're kind of past that talking point with it. So where was your headspace? If the one before this was more tied in with the COVID era, where was your headspace compared to this new one?

A person in a fuzzy coat standing among lush greenery

LP: Well, I mean, that one was, I would say that was, I thought it was almost done or done, you know, when we went into COVID. And then I, I had nothing else to do. So I started to, like, try to beat some songs and add some songs. And I think that's why it's probably my longest record. Or not. I just don't put that many songs on record, usually. But, um, but yeah, it was like, kind of, like, I got more, very intricate with that one, I think, but this one felt, this was kind of a product of the pandemic in a way that, because it was like, my, my pod, you know? Like, I had like this, I broke up with my girlfriend, fiancee at the time, and we, and then I started, like, kind of hanging out with all these people, these different people. And I'm getting close to them. Some of them were her friends that I just realized that I was more compatible with. And I because I'm always on tour, so I don't really get to, like, you know, hang that much. So when I was home, I just started hanging out with this group of musicians, and it was one of those like, it was like, kind of hang— we would, like, mess around, like, musically, but we didn't like go in the studio. And then we went in the studio, we wrote a song. And it was an awesome experience, and another one, then another one. And, and then all of a sudden, boom! We were like, I was whisking us away to like a house in the islands that's like, like we made a studio. And yeah, and this record came out of that, out of a couple of different destinations.

Mac Wilson: Which islands was this?

LP: Cayman. Cayman Islands. I call it "Cay Man" because Andrew — so it's Andrew Martin, Matt Pauling, producer, and Ashton Irwin, and it was like the four of us doing this — and Andrew Martin is from Cayman Islands, and the people in Cayman call it "Cay Man." And so I do too, now. And so we all went down there, and we just had this beautiful like time and it was like our friendship like was just like getting so big and so beautiful, and all this came out of that, so that was cool.

Mac Wilson: OK, so this studio in Cayman...

LP: Well, we made the studio. We made a studio.

Mac Wilson: So you made the studio, so this was not an incident like. I think of like when Dire Straits made Brothers in Arms in they went to Montserrat, where there's like diagrams of how they set up the studio like to get the absolute exact sound they wanted. This was more about, like, vibes in general rather than...

LP: Well, no. I mean, I did most of these vocals like you know in this makeshift vocal booth that was mattresses from one of the rooms. Yeah, no, we got a lot of dope sounds. We had a whole live room with drums. Andrew's pals from the island, like kind of hooked us up with gear and mics and drums for Ashton. And it was awesome.

Palm trees above a sandy beach in the tropics

Mac Wilson: I'm thinking about listening to your voice on record and the efforts that you went through to capture that in the scenario like that. And like, during the first days of the pandemic, when we would record stuff from our own homes, and like, like, literally throwing a blanket over my head, like going down in my basement, like, "I don't know — is the sound good enough on this?", and then comparing that to the way that you're describing. It's kind of kind of ballparks away from that, but and yet sort of the same idea.

LP: That's the way to go. I mean, I think, I think there's, you know, there's a lot to be said, for the vibe, you know? And also the excitement of like singing a new song that you capture, that you can't capture as well, when you're like, very calculated later in the studio. You know?

Mac Wilson: We are in The Current studio with LP. And when you read through your biography, and your catalogue, there's a lot of big names that are in there. One of them that we've always got to ask here is about Dan Wilson .

LP: Oh, yeah!

Mac Wilson: He's from Minnesota, originally, and a longtime friend, he's a very good friend of The Current. So how did it go with Dan Wilson?

LP: It went great. I wrote the title track of "Churches" with him. And, yeah, I had two days with him. And I think the first day, I was just in awe of him and him as a musician, him as a man, you know, he's just like, a lovely guy, and just so deep. And, you know, I was, I was like, sitting at the foot of, you know, this giant, awesome guy. And, and then I was like, I started to panic toward the end of session: "Am I gonna come up with something with this guy?" So you don't just want to talk to him the whole time. And so then, you know, I had some stuff with "Churches," and we started that. And yeah, I think we finished it next day. I think we started something else, but we didn't finish it. But yeah, he's an amazing musician and producer.

Mac Wilson: In the the songwriting and the songwriting work that you've done with other folks, then, do you feel ... it sounds like when you were working with Dan, you were like, on the other side, you're looking up to him, having other musicians look up to you, like working with you in the studio. Do you feel that?

LP: I felt that with him, I felt like, wow, this guy, because, you know, I knew he had, like, had a big hit as a band. And then he was doing the production and writing thing. And I felt a little bit like that, because I write for other people, and I was just, like, kind of just taking, you know, notes from him. And just, like, kind of feeling like we both, we both had some, some, you know, common stuff in our like you're saying. And, yeah, it was really cool, because I liked the idea of having different places in, in the musical scope of things. You know, I mean, there's been times when I, I don't contribute, like lyrics to something; I'm just doing melodies, or, you know, and then, and, or just all lyrics, or it does, you know, when I write for others. I do both for myself. But I, but it's just like, it's interesting to, like, go into these places where you're like, in a different title, in a way. And I think he knows all about that.

Mac Wilson: In the songwriting work that you've been doing as far back as it goes, in this era of streaming, is there any instances of songs that have like unexpectedly taken off in your back catalogue? You're like, where you get a like a check, you're like, "Wow, this song took off." Are there any instances of those that have really surprised you?

LP: Yeah, that's, that's what kept me going as a songwriter anyway, you know? Like, I, I couldn't believe like, like, the songs that were like, around the world, like, like, making income for me, that I was like, you know, that I don't even remember writing, you know? Like, I mean, someone sent me a song the other day that I guess, I ... and I wrote it with some big producer, and, like, Danger Mouse or something like that. And it was like, very, like, Rihanna, Sia vibes, I totally didn't remember writing it. And I think I'm going to like, reproduce it and and pitch it again. But um, but yeah, or pitch it finally; sometimes things don't even get pitched. But I was, I'm always surprised. Yeah, I have a song, I have a song online that I did, I might do a couple more times this tour. I do it stripped down with just my guitar player and my piano player. And it's a song, it's got, like, 25 million views on YouTube. It's like one's just like 12 million, one's like 11 million, and there's a bunch of ones that are a hundreds of thousands or whatever, and I never released it. I don't even know who released it. I told my manager, I said, "I'm gonna start doing it on tour. Do we know who's monetizing that?" Like I don't think it's on my, it's not on my page. I'm not sure, but but yeah, I think it's like an old manager guy before my managers now, which has been a minute. It's been like over 10 years that I've had these managers, so it's like someone in my past, because I wrote that song in 2007 with like, some huge songwriter, producer, Matthew Wilder who did the first No Doubt record, also was an artist himself with [sings] " ain't nothing gonna break-a my stride... "

Mac Wilson: Was that who I'm thinking of, that he did Disney's Hercules ? [Editor’s Note: Wilder composed, produced and performed on the score for Disney’s Mulan .]

LP: Maybe. I wouldn't put it past him. He's an incredible guy. But um, but yeah, he ... So yeah, that song's just out, getting that many hits, like kinda just doing its thing, and I found that remarkable like, and cool, and it makes me want to release a whole couple, I can put out like three records of like songs no one's ever heard. More than that, but ones that are worth hearing, maybe I think.

Mac Wilson: Well, that's what Dan Wilson did when he went back into everything that he wrote with other people, and then he did the solo version of those.

Dan Wilson

LP: That's cool.

Mac Wilson: That was really cool, that came out a couple years back. Well, for all we know, the performances that we recorded in the studio today, maybe that'll be one with 25 million hits on at The Current someday from LP.

LP: Yeah, man. We'll see.

Mac Wilson: Thank you again for stopping by today.

LP: Thank you! Thank you for having me.

Mac Wilson: Thank you and best of luck with where the road leads you next, and we'll see you again soon.

LP: All right. Very cool. Thank you.

Mac Wilson: Thank you.
