'Definitely get married on a cruise ship': The weddings take less planning than on land

cruise instead of wedding

  • Carnival Cruise Line performed 2,200 weddings and vow renewals in 2019.
  • There's less planning involved on the part of the marrying couple for a cruise ship wedding.
  • The cost of a wedding and cruise combination can vary, just like a wedding on land.

Like so many others, Tom Hayes and Jimmy Isaacs had to push back their wedding because of COVID-19. But unlike most couples, the London-based pair's wedding didn't take place at a typical venue. Instead, they were wed on a cruise ship.

Hayes told USA TODAY that he's been on around 20 cruises – and that when he and Isaacs started seeing each other, he turned his other half into a cruise addict, too.

"Naturally, when Jimmy proposed to me in June 2019 we both immediately knew we wanted to get married at sea," Hayes said. "We had planned to marry aboard Norwegian Epic, sailing out of Barcelona in April 2021."

The couple married April 18 on the same ship with 27 of their loved ones.

While it's not the most common destination for a wedding, marriages are performed on cruise ships fairly often.

HOW MUCH TO SPEND: The 'appropriate' range of a wedding gift can vary

Royal Caribbean International, for example, hosts around 1,000 weddings each year, Celia De La Llama, a spokesperson for the line, told USA TODAY.

And Michele Andjel, spokesperson for P&O Cruises and Cunard, Carnival Corporation's UK brands, told USA TODAY that on annual average, P&O Cruises hosts more than 500 weddings and Cunard more than 100.

Holland America Line carried out 27 weddings in 2019, the last "typical year" before the pandemic, spokesperson Erik Elvejord said. This year, Holland America already has 20 weddings "on the books."

In the same year, Carnival Cruise Line did 2,200 weddings and vow renewals, Matt Lupoli, Carnival spokesperson, said.

Why get married on a cruise ship?

Macy Reeves married her husband on Carnival Cruise Line's Carnival Sunrise ship on Feb. 8, 2020. They chose to get married at sea because of the size of her family, she said.

"I couldn't afford to invite everyone to the wedding (it would've been more than 300 people) so a cruise wedding fixed that because I could invite as many sailing guests as I wanted and I was limited to 30 nonsailing guests," Reeves explained.

That means that anyone who booked a sailing on the ship could come to the wedding and an additional 30 could come onboard for the wedding and leave afterward.

"It worked out perfect," she said. "We had a five-day honeymoon cruise with our friends and family."

Just over a decade ago, Sharine and Dana Grayson-Thomas, frequent cruisers, got married on the Norwegian Jewel before it departed from New York City.

They made the decision to wed on a ship after already booking a venue, DJ, flowers, cake and more for a land-based wedding in Connecticut, Sharine told USA TODAY in July while the couple was celebrating their 10th anniversary on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas.

While planning, the Grayson-Thomases found themselves asking "will the guests like this?" And realized that they'd planned a celebration that wasn't for them at all.

"We were like, 'this is not us,'" Sharine said. "We were trying to plan for everyone else to enjoy."

So they changed course, cut their guest list from 200 to 60, and booked their wedding with Norwegian Cruise Line, which, at the time, Dana said was the only cruise line to offer same-sex wedding ceremonies.

What's it like to get married on a cruise ship?

Reeves boarded the ship at 10 a.m. on her wedding day and the event began around noon.

Before the ceremony, guests could spend the time as they pleased on the ship – drinking, eating, playing mini-golf – while Reeves readied herself. Then, they had a 12-minute ceremony before an onboard reception with dancing, drinks, dining and toasts before nonsailing guests disembarked.

While the ceremony and reception were shorter than land-side commemorations, the full celebration was longer.

"Other cruise guests saw us in our wedding attire and congratulated us," she said. "People bought us drinks when (we were) out on the boat. We participated in a wedding show onboard the boat. It was just a big party for five days instead of a one-day celebration with family and friends how most weddings are."

Sharine and Dana Grayson-Thomas boarded with their 60 guests before the rest of the passengers at 10:30 a.m.

They had a "circle of love" ceremony in one of the lounges with special purple, pink and fuchsia touches featuring silk flowers – you can't bring live flowers onto a cruise ship, they explained.

After the wedding ended, the newlyweds started their vacation with 14 of their loved ones, including their children.

How it works for wedding guests

Similar to a destination wedding, a cruise wedding offers guests the opportunity to become passengers and to stay for a vacation. And that is taken into account during the planning process.

"It was important to us that we chose a sailing that offered both a short (three-night) and long (seven-night) option so that our guests could stay for as short or as long as they wished – and this itinerary really fit the spec," Hayes explained.

But, depending on the situation, invited guests don't always have to remain on board after the wedding in order to attend.

Reeves had 30 "nonsailing" guests come onboard for the ceremony while the ship was docked in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They stayed for the ceremony and a reception before disembarking.

Like Reeves, the Grayson-Thomases had some guests that disembarked after the wedding. After checking out the ship while waiting for the ceremony to begin, they said some of their guests had regrets about not sticking around for a vacation.

How much does it cost?

Like a wedding shoreside, the cost of the experience can vary.

For Hayes and Isaacs, the wedding aspect itself cost the London-based couple around £1000, or $1300. The actual cruise cost more.

"We're on for seven nights and are in a Spa Suite – spoiling ourselves – so it's £2,600 ($3,410) for the two of us," Hayes said. "But some of our guests are doing three nights and in an inside cabin at £400 ($520) per person."

Reeves, who got married on a Carnival Cruise Line ship, said they spent around $4,000 on the ceremony and reception onboard and a "grand total" of $10,000 on the entire experience including her dress, the rehearsal dinner, the cruise, photographer, ceremony – the whole nine yards.

As of April 2022, the starting price to have a wedding on a Carnival  ship is $1,499 with up to 10 guests including the couple, a two-tier cake and a few other amenities. Cost increases from there. However, the cruise line is not currently booking new reservations for weddings or vow renewals, according to its website .

The Grayson-Thomases' 2011 wedding cost around $17,000, Sharine estimated – that covered the cost of the cruise for the couple, their children and the wedding itself. Dana commented that they saved a great deal of money by getting married at sea.

For reference, a wedding in the U.S. cost around $34,000 total on average in 2021, according to The Knot.  The ceremony and reception portion cost $28,000 on average.

How does planning work?

Getting married on a cruise ship entails minimal work on the part of the couple, according to Hayes.

"There's less to do," he said. "No negotiating with multiple suppliers – the florist, the venue, the band, the caterers, the drivers, the hotel, the bar staff, etc."

Instead, they were able to simply contact the Norwegian Cruise Line's special events team to communicate their desires. Norwegian also has a calendar available on its website for interested couples to investigate open dates for weddings and their assorted packages available for purchase.

Sharine Grayson-Thomas said the same.

"If you like to have total control of everything and be like a 'bridezilla,' it’s not for you, they're really planning everything," she explained. "You're choosing a few things and you're giving them money for it."

Dana Grayson-Thomas said there are a few ways to incorporate your own flare, especially if the ceremony is held before the ship departs such as theme colors.

Reeves also hired a private photographer to work her wedding – even though she was bending the rules a bit.

"You're not supposed to … but I did it anyway," she said. "(The cruise line) wants you to use their photographers but if you tell them your 'aunt' or 'uncle' is a photographer and is taking your photos for free then they'll allow it."

And while no live flowers are allowed on board because of the possibility of insects traveling from one country to another on the ship, Reeves worked with a florist to select artificial floral arrangements to bring on board, she said.

Even though she added her own touches, it still was simpler than it would have been to plan a wedding shoreside, she said.

"Since the whole wedding was 2.5 hours total, it made the planning part very easy because it was just ceremony and reception," she explained. "I also had to have everything planned out and submitted to my Carnival cruise wedding planner at least 60 days before the wedding."

There was a downside though, to the simplicity: It felt rushed. Reeves and her husband, Michael, had to miss a few dances to go take photos with the photographer since there wasn't designated time to do that – when it may have taken place during a cocktail hour at a traditional venue.

But, Reeves said, they don't have any regrets.

"It was a fantastic experience," she said. "I would recommend anyone who is uncertain about what kind of wedding they're wanting but they know they want casual, fun, and unique to definitely get married on a cruise ship."

And Hayes agreed. "We had a wonderful day and the ship’s staff couldn’t have done more to make it go smoothly."

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

August 01, 2020 6 min read

carnival cruise wedding

Cruise ship weddings can be fun, simple, and affordable. Check out the things you should know before planning a cruise ship wedding!  Did you know that the average wedding in the United States cost over  $20,000?  I personally had my wedding on a cruise ship and I loved it! A cruise wedding can be as cheap as  $1500-$7000  depending on what you want and how many people will be attending. You can also add things and still have an amazing wedding on a budget.  A wedding on a cruise ship is a great way to save money, time, and is a very unique way to tie the knot!   I have created this cruise ship wedding guide for anyone looking for perspective and tips on tying the knot on board a cruise ship.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

1.) Reserve in advance

With any wedding whether land or sea, reserve in advance because you may not be the only couple considering a certain wedding date. Also, you want to book your cruise vacation in advance to avoid it being sold out.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

2.)Your Wedding can be at a port or destination venue

I had my wedding in Miami before the cruise set sail. You can choose to have your wedding on the ship in your home port before it sets sail or at another port like the Caribbean, Mexico, Hawaii etc. Keep in mind that you can not have your wedding while the cruise is actually sailing on the ocean because a legal marriage has to be within a country. Also, know that you can renew your vows on a cruise if you are already married!

3.)Pick the right cruise for you

For most ships they will require you to book your cruise vacation first before starting any wedding planning so keep this in mind. Also, every ship is different with different cruise lengths and things to offer so you will want to pick the cruise ship that matches your personality. I personally chose to have a wedding on Carnival cruise because it offered affordable wedding packages compared to other ships and I chose a 7 day cruise because it was not too long or too short. A 4 day cruise is also a great option.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

4.) Get the balcony suite

You will be saving some major bucks on your wedding, so you will have some extra cash to get an ocean view suite with a balcony. I would highly recommend getting a balcony suite because it is more spacious and waking up to different views every morning will be very romantic.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

5) Bring marriage license

You will need to get your marriage license prior to the wedding. After the wedding ceremony the newly married couple, their witnesses, and clergy will sign the marriage license. It will be up to the couple to file it with the courts after the wedding so that it will be legal.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

6) Non-cruising family members can attend wedding

Even if your family members will not be passengers on the ship, they can still be in attendance to your wedding when the ship is in port. When I had my wedding with Carnival cruise line I was able to get onto the ship with all of my family members and friends before the ship was to set sail from Miami, FL and have my wedding. Also, keep in mind there will be no other people on the boat besides you, your wedding guest, and the cruise staff at the time of your wedding because you will be given priority boarding and get on the ship earlier than others for your wedding.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

7.) Honeymoon will still be amazing even with cruising family members

Speaking of family members, don't worry about your honeymoon being less romantic with family or friends cruising with you. The ships are so big and full of different activities that you are not likely to run into them. However, if you do want to hang out with them it can be very fun.

8.) Let your guest know your plans ASAP

When planning a cruise wedding you will want to let your guest know your plans as soon as possible, so that they can have time to prepare or take off from work. You can do this  BEFORE  sending out invitations by simply emailing, calling or texting your guest to give them a heads up of your plans.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

9.) Make a wedding website & registry

When it comes to a cruise wedding there are a lot of little details that your guest will need to know and understand. On your wedding website or facebook page be sure to include hotel information, directions to the cruise port and where to meet for the wedding. You will also want to let them know that if they are a non-sailing wedding guest they will need to bring I.D and if they are a sailing guest to bring their passport.   Check out how I set up my wedding website  here .

10.)Try to get group rates

Try to book accommodations as a group so that your wedding guests and you can get better rates and save money on your cruise booking.

11.) Wedding planners will assist you

The great thing about having a wedding on a ship is that it will be a lot less stressful. The cruise wedding coordinators take care of everything, you just let them know what you want. Wedding packages offered on the ship also help to take a lot of the work out of the wedding planning. Packages will include cake, food, flowers, and entertainment..

Tip:  A great company to get some beautiful themed wedding invitations is the  stylishscribe.com  and you can get real looking artifice flowers looking online.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

12.) When or when not to have your wedding cruise...

Avoid summer and spring breaks:  if you choose to have your wedding during these times you may be sharing your cruise vacation with college spring breakers and families on vacation with their kids However, do book your cruise during these time if it fits into your wedding plans and guest schedules.     Avoid holidays: keep in mind when planning your wedding and cruise vacation that it may be more money during holidays.     Consider the season & weather: of course you will want to try your best to avoid bad weather months. For example I avoided having my wedding during hurricane season in Florida

13.)Come at least a day prior to wedding cruise

If you do not happen to live conveniently near the cruise port and are driving or flying in for the wedding, do yourself the favor and stay in a hotel prior to your big day. This will save you from running around like a crazy person and from getting stressed out. It also gives you more time to spend with family and friends prior to your wedding as wedding cruises typically are shorter.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

  14.)Get reliable transportation

Be sure to get reliable transportation to the cruise ship for your big day and preferably get a hotel near the cruise port. You may want to consider getting a shuttle from your hotel for you and your wedding party.

15.) Arriving to cruise port...

you will be met outside by a cruise coordinator in a designated area. They will escort you and your wedding party into the ship in order to get ready. For your wedding you and all your guest will have priority boarding and check in. I boarded the ship at 10:00 a.m with all of my wedding guest.

16.) Getting ready for your wedding

Makeup:  On the boat they can do your wedding makeup for you or you can be sure that your makeup artist comes with you into your cabin along with your wedding party.     Hair:   I would recommend having most of your hair done prior to getting on the boat and leave any minor finishing touches for the boat in order to save time in getting ready for your big day.     Clothes: Dress for the occasion, yes it is a cruise wedding and can be laid back but I would recommend to still dress to impress.       Cabins:   Your cabin will be ready early for you and your wedding party to get ready in.   I would recommend that you request a second cabin be opened so that the groom and the bridal party can get ready in separate locations.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

17.)Wedding ceremony

keep in mind that  the ceremony room you get will be based off of the number of guest that you have attending your wedding. During your big day your guest will be directed to the ceremony room by your wedding coordinator.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

18.)Wedding Reception

I would recommend that during the reception you just try and mingle with your wedding guest, with the exception of some candid shots and the standard wedding cake cutting photo. The time you have is short and it is better to pick up the professional picture taking after the reception where you will be able to go around the boat and outside to take plenty of photos by the photographer.

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

19.) Photos and videography

You can not bring your own photographer. Also, be aware that with any wedding that the professional photos and videos may be expensive. I personally would recommend getting the professional photos and video of your wedding and try to get the photo package that is right for your budget.     See example wedding video:  here

20 Things to know when planning a cruise ship wedding

20.) Honeymoon

Time to sit back, relax and enjoy your honeymoon! My honeymoon was spent in Belize, Mexico, Honduras and Grand Cayman on the ship Carnival Glory. We had a balcony suite and really enjoyed every part of our honeymoon cruise from ordering room service in our cabin to snorkeling in the crystal blue waters of Mexico and riding around on a scooter.

Cruise Weddings: Everything You Need to Know

Getting married on a cruise is a one-of-a-kind experience. If you're considering having a cruise wedding, here is essential info to help you with the cruise wedding process.

We have included third party products to help you navigate and enjoy life’s biggest moments. Purchases made through links on this page may earn us a commission.

That First Moment

If you’re considering getting married abroad but can’t decide on a single location for your big day, you may want to consider a cruise wedding. Getting married on a cruise allows you and your guests to visit multiple destinations and easily stay close to one another—plus you can all enjoy the amenities a cruise ship has to offer. So, is a cruise wedding right for you? We talked to Heather Marohl of Travel Pros in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Frank Armstrong of Cruise & Vacation Travel in Le Roy, Michigan, and Julie A. Miller of Unlimited Vacations & Cruises in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, to get all the details on cruise weddings.

* Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cruises are on hold for the time being. Please be sure and check local and federal guidelines before booking.

What types of couples and weddings are cruise weddings best suited for?

According to our pros, cruise weddings can work for a variety of different couples and styles. However, it’s best for those who don’t mind  letting go of the details  and keeping things simple. “From the flowers to the music, cruise weddings tend to be simple and you likely won’t have many choices to pick from, if any,” says Heather. In terms of wedding size, cruise ship weddings tend to work for  smaller guest lists —but some cruises can accommodate larger party sizes. Cruise weddings also can be ideal for couples who  don’t want any guests at all , and who want to combine their wedding or elopement with a unique honeymoon experience.

What are the cost differences between a cruise ship wedding and an “on-land” destination wedding?

“The  traditional destination wedding  is more costly, but you get a lot more options, more security—you are not at the whim of the sea—and you can have more people,” says Heather. “Cruise weddings, first you have to pay for the cruise itself, and then the wedding package. Some companies offer à la carte options, which can add up quickly. You will also have to pay for license fees, which vary by cruise line, per package, per location if you’re getting married on shore.”

How do cruise weddings work? Do couples typically get married on the ship or at a port?

It’s up to you. Some couples choose to get married on the ship before it departs, while others get married on land at a destination port. “If friends and family cannot afford to take the cruise but can be at the wedding, then having it on ship prior to sailing would be the logical choice,” says Frank. “If friends and family can go on the cruise, then there is nothing like being married in a tropical garden or on the beach in a Caribbean island.”

Can you legally get married on a cruise ship?

You’ll have to  take note of legal requirements  when it comes to getting married on a cruise ship or on land. Some countries have residency requirements, meaning you have to reside on the island for a certain period of time in order to legally marry there—not possible if you’re just making a cruise stop. Of course, you could legally marry in your home country before your cruise and have a symbolic wedding at the port. When it comes to getting married on a cruise ship, you’ll need to follow the laws of the country where the ship is registered. So you can easily marry on certain cruise lines’ ships, while there are others where you can’t. Be sure to do your research, talk to a  travel agent who specializes in weddings , and apply for licenses far in advance.

B. Jones Photography

How long of a cruise typically works best for a wedding.

If you’re planning on combining your wedding with a honeymoon, a five to seven-day cruise will likely be ideal. “If the wedding party can sail along with the couple, then the party continues for the entire cruise and that could also be a very memorable event for all,” says Frank.

Which wedding details will a cruise arrange? What is the couple responsible for?

If you’re getting married on the ship, the cruise will typically provide a  wedding coordinator  with their package. “Generally, the cruise line includes the flowers, music, photographer, and officiant (this could be the captain) in the packages, though some of these might cost extra,” says Heather. “The couple is responsible for, but not limited to, registering for their marriage license, their attire, and  the invitations .” If you’re getting married on land, you’ll be responsible for arranging all of the details—and it’s recommended to hire a planner at your wedding location to ensure that everything goes smoothly.

Are there any times of year that should be avoided when it comes to cruise weddings?

“This depends on the destination of your cruise,” says Heather. “The Caribbean’s hurricane season is from June 1 through November 30, so I would avoid booking during this time period as to not have to  deal with any unpredicted storms . The Greek Islands generally close for the off-season. Alaska cruises have a particular set of dates when they allow cruises.” Frank notes that holidays and the family vacation season (summer) can be quite  expensive and crowded  and might not be the best for a cruise wedding.

What are some popular cruise locations for weddings?

The Caribbean is most popular, but again, be aware of residency requirements before booking. St. Thomas, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas, Jamaica, and St. Lucia tend to be popular. But don’t limit yourself to warm-weather locations! Why not try Alaska? Says Heather: “How many people can say they got married on a glacier?” There are also U.S.-based cruises, such as ones that sail along the New England and Canadian coastlines during the fall. Or for something completely different, the famed Queen Mary 2 offers weddings as it sails across the Atlantic Ocean!

Easton Studios

What are some popular cruise lines for weddings?

Many cruise lines and companies can accommodate weddings, including Princess Cruises , Disney Cruise Line , Carnival Cruise Line , Crystal Cruises , Celebrity Cruises , Norwegian Cruise Line , and Royal Caribbean , among others. These cruise lines offer a variety of routes and price points so it’s often best to work with a travel agent to find the exact cruise that best suits your desired event.

What can go wrong with a cruise wedding?

Mother Nature pose certain problems when it comes to cruise weddings. Cruises may skip ports due to weather, which can be a risk if you’re planning a wedding on land. And as we’ve seen, cruises can be at greater risk for COVID-19 outbreaks due to the close quarters.

How should you travel with valuable wedding essentials, such as rings and attire?

If you’re hosting a cruise wedding, it’s important to think about how you’ll be transporting your valuable items, such as your rings, attire, and more . When it comes to these items, it’s essential to have them close by at all times—do not check valuable items and do not showcase them out in the open. You might also want to bring a steamer on your trip to ensure that you can straighten out any attire that may become wrinkled in transport.

Weddings at Sea

Love means different things to different people, but no matter who you ask, they are sure to agree that a special place in which to share their love makes it that much more meaningful. And few settings can compete with the romantic atmosphere aboard a cruise ship. Whether it’s waking up to breakfast in bed, indulging in a couples’ massage, sitting down to a candle-lit dinner, or watching a breathtaking sunset from the ship deck, romance is in the air and it’s the perfect place to spend time with the one you love. It's also a fabulous venue for weddings!

Planning a wedding can be an overwhelming experience, especially when it comes to deciding on colours, decorations, menus, the number of guests and where this sacred event will take place. Your wedding is something that should give you great joy, so why not leave it to the professionals, where the only thing you need to do is show up! And where better to tie the knot than aboard a fabulous cruise ship in the destination of your choice?

When getting married on a cruise ship, you'll have a host of professionals trained to accommodate your every need during your cruise wedding. From cakes and tuxedos to accommodations and the reception hall, you won't have to leave the ship for anything… unless, of course, you choose to have your reception ashore, in which case the amenities come to you!

Instead of the traditional walk down the aisle, why not make your way barefoot through warm, white sand to a quaint little chapel on the beach in the Caribbean? Or say your vows on a hillside vineyard in Italy or on the snowy-white glaciers of Alaska. Another option is to book a pre-cruise wedding package in your cruise itinerary’s home port – usually Fort Lauderdale, Los Angeles, Tampa, San Diego, New York City or Vancouver B.C. The possibilities are endless!

You don't have to cruise to be married in a beautiful location. Many cruise lines own private islands, used specifically for this purpose. Half Moon Cay, for example, belongs to Holland America Line and is fully equipped with a chapel and a breathtaking backdrop. And with a host of destination wedding packages available, why not save the cruise for your honeymoon? Start your journey on the shores of Paradise Cove Beach in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, and tie the knot beneath towering palm trees in a charming Gazebo before setting sail on your cruise getaway. Wherever you choose to celebrate your big day, it is certain to be unforgettable.

And who says you can’t be cost efficient when it comes to your wedding day? The average cost of a wedding with reception in Canada and the US is $27,899. The cost of a cruise wedding, however, ranges from $1,000* to $4,000*, and generally includes a personalized ceremony, wedding officiant, wedding coordinator services, flowers, cake, champagne, photo album, recorded music, keepsake wedding certificate and a photographer. Spa and hair appointments, as well as tuxedo rentals may also be available. Packages may vary by cruise line. When it comes to getting the best value for your dream wedding, an obvious choice is to say “I Do” on the high seas.

Not only is this a cost efficient option for the happy couple, but for the guests as well. Holland America Line, for example, offers a GAP (Group Appreciation Program) Package, whereby groups of up to 16 people can benefit from exclusive amenities including free wedding cake, a Pinnacle Grill lunch, a private wine tasting, chocolate-covered strawberries and a bottle of Chase Limogere Brut in their staterooms. Plus, the wedding couple will enjoy a free stateroom upgrade, with a minimum of eight staterooms booked.

Please Note:

Groups exceeding 16 people will be charged $5 for each additional guest.

Together with the expertise of our specialized partner, Royal Ocean Events, you’re certain to have the wedding you’ve always dreamt of. Our Vacation Specialists will find you the perfect cruise and leave your wedding in the capable hands of these event planning professionals.

Helpful tips to ensure your wedding day runs smoothly:

  • The wedding couple is responsible for obtaining a valid marriage license
  • Legal ceremonies are not performed at sea; only in port
  • We recommend that your wedding party arrives in port at least one day prior to departure to avoid any scheduling mishaps

Pros and Cons of Getting Married on A Cruise Ship

cruise instead of wedding

Photo by Johen Redman on Unsplash

This entry is from our Expert Guest series where wedding and honeymoon professionals share their best tips on creating memories that last a lifetime.

We all want to create lasting memories of our wedding day. Instead of organizing your wedding in the usual places, you may want to choose a spectacular cruise wedding setting. While there are various cruise destinations to choose from, you never want to forget the memories of saying “I do’ in the open sea as the sunsets.

Getting married on a cruise ship can be an exciting experience, but you should research it thoroughly before deciding. Flexibility forms a crucial part of the decision-making process, but once you are clear on what you want, it has several advantages. It will be your opportunity to enjoy beautiful destinations while having a lot of fun. Here are the major pros and cons of cruise ship weddings that you should consider.

Pros of a Cruise Ship Wedding:

Getting ready for the wedding

A wedding on a cruise is cheap

You may not know this, but a nautical wedding is a lot cheaper than a traditional wedding. It also depends on how you plan your cruise wedding and how many days you would like to spend; you can decide to combine the reception and ceremony. Having a unique purchase offer could also give you some cruise line benefits and discounts.

Beautiful wedding settings

Cruise ship decor

Photo by Michelle Maria from Pixabay

There are many beautiful traditional wedding venues; however, they can’t compare to all the charming backdrops you will see during your cruise wedding. Plus, you won’t need tons of decorative items and lighting. Nothing will be more romantic than tying a knot in the open sea against a picturesque sunset. Bring a wedding guest book and let your guests record their experience and best wishes. You will have beautiful memories to relive every time you read the guestbook.

Professional wedding organization

While searching for the best cruise services, you will find that most of them have a wedding planning package. With a wedding planner by your side, it will be easier to coordinate logistics. Working with an expert who has already done it several times will allow you to organize a beautiful wedding.

All services included

High quality dining

Photo by Wolfgang Reindl from Pixabay

A cruise ship wedding offers a package that covers everything you need for your big day. Even your guests will be to make the accommodation offers that best suit your budget. They will also have the freedom to choose the most comfortable cabin type for them. Since accommodation costs include meals, your guests will find this option cheaper. There is also an option to incorporate your friends into this organization: you can create an online wedding registry!

Wide range of activities

Activities on board

Cruises organize various activities to ensure you make the most of the experience. They try not to get bored day and night. Enjoy water attractions, participate in dance classes, visit the spa, and play various games. In the evening, you can visit a disco, go to the cinema or attend a show program.

Cons of an On-Board Wedding:

Meteorological changes.

Weather changes on ship

The weather can be quite unpredictable at sea. You may think it will be sunny and beautiful, but the weather suddenly becomes rainy or windy. Prepare yourself with a backup plan at such an event. As a suggestion, avoid fixing your cruise wedding in stormy seasons.

Short guest list

Unfortunately, you may not be able to host as many guests as you want on a cruise wedding. You may only be able to invite a certain amount of guests.

Legal challenges

It is essential to know that the process of getting married abroad is time-consuming and challenging. Legalizing a wedding in a port far from your home can be difficult. Remember to check if the documents will still be legal when you get home. You can avoid this obstacle by filing legal documents before or after your cruise wedding. Other requirements to check are blood tests and eligibility to get married. You must also have documents translated into the country where you want to get married.

Be watchful of cruise surcharges

Cruise weddings are increasingly popular these days, and cruise lines have taken notice. Most cruise lines now require surcharges if you are getting married at specific times of the year. It means paying more if you want your wedding in May and June, on Valentine’s Day, or having your wedding on a new cruise ship; you may be required to pay a surcharge.

Final thought

Enjoy your cruise ship wedding

Most couples who are repeat cruisers will find this more exciting. Others may experience excitement but must do more research to make a decision. Also, try to weigh the pros and cons of having a cruise wedding. At the end of the spectrum, whatever you are in, understand that being flexible is vital. Enjoy your cruise!

Wedding Packages

You’ve done the hard part: the man or woman of your dreams is yours, and aren’t they lovely? Do we ever have a wedding spot to match — aboard a Carnival ship! A Carnival shipboard wedding is a great way to start your life together… a spot as unique as the two of you. After all, think of all the weddings you’ve been to — we’ve got the fun alternative, with a view that’s hard to find on land and a sea breeze you just can’t get at a country club. Your shipboard wedding will be held in the port of your choice, so choose a city you’ll remember forever as the one where you made it official. Leave wedding stress ashore, because for a simple fee Carnival takes care of it all: the ceremony includes not only an officiant to get the knot tied right, but little details like the cake, champagne, music and more. And perhaps best of all: once you’re married, you’re already on your honeymoon! Your shipboard wedding can be customized to fit your imagination and budget. Add packages that include everything from a simple open bar and hors d’oeuvres reception to an elegant sit-down luncheon in the ship’s formal restaurant. Whatever you’re looking for, let our professional wedding agents help you design your ideal wedding. Learn more about shipboard weddings.

Wedding Venues

Personal touches.

What matters most on your wedding day is that you’ll be spending it with the person of your dreams. But if you could custom-design your dream wedding, how would you make it truly your own? Let’s start with where — a Carnival destination wedding lets you choose a scenic island as the background for your memories. The blue skies, the sounds of nature and even the sea-scented breeze as you say “I do” will become some of the most vivid parts of the memories you make that day. It’s important to remember that a Carnival destination wedding makes planning easy, because we take care of nearly every detail. We’ll take the bride and groom to the wedding site, select a local officiant to perform the ceremony, and handle the music and bouquet. We’ll even help you obtain a legally-binding marriage certificate in your destination port! Since we’ve already thought of everything, all you need to think about is how great it’s going to be. These folks celebrated their wedding on a Carnival cruise. If you did too, we’d love to see! Hashtag your photos #CarnivalCruiseWedding — you may see them right here.

Royal Caribbean - booking private group event instead of wedding package?

Cool Cruiser

has anyone ever done this or looked into it? With all the terrible reviews for their wedding coordination, it seems like it would be easier to just book a lounge for a private special event during the cruise and do the wedding/ reception yourself? It would probably have to be a symbolic ceremony, but then you could have much more control over everything. For a small wedding would this work?

We are exploring this exact same thing, but ultimately we are going to do the wedding package. We are getting married on the Independence in February. The events department can do a VERY basic ceremony for you, and can't provide an officiant, so if you are doing a small gathering or eloping I think it could work. Part of why we decided to ultimately go with the package is because you get someone to orchestrate and execute on everything for the day (they follow the "template"). Doing it through the events department, I would end up being in charge of ensuring who walks down the aisle when, how the music will work, who needs to be where when, etc etc. You'd save a bunch of money using the events department BUT I would recommend it only if you have a small group or a super casual event and don't care about the normal process of a wedding or the stress the day of of doing it yourself. We are doing our Ceremony and Cocktail Hour in the Star Lounge and then did a restaurant buy out of Chops for dinner that night. For dancing etc after we're going to just end up bar/band hopping around the ship after dinner. Totally happy to answer any specific questions you have! We are not doing an embarkation day ceremony/event, and have about 50 guests sailing with us.

Are you still thinking about doing this/ did this for your wedding? I am interested in details if you are/did! As plan and budget for a wedding, I'm thinking about this option to save some money but still have a fun wedding on a cruise. Interested in thoughts! Thanks!

Congratulations!!!!!  I am doing almost the same thing for our wedding coming up in April of 2020.  Sounds like you either already did or will soon be getting married yourself on the Independence.  I would LOVE to hear how it went when you get back for your cruise!!!  🙂   Good Luck & Have Fun... -Tiffany

Curious how this turned out as well! We got married on the LOS but went through the wedding package. We overall had a very good experience with the wedding planners minus a few hiccups there were solved pretty quickly.

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant throw a three-day voyage through Italy aboard a luxury cruise ship in a lavish second pre-wedding party with 800 guests, Roman toga parties and a masquerade ball

By Isaac Bickerstaff

Anant Ambani, son of Indian businessman Mukesh Dhirubhai Amani, and Radhika Merchant

The Ambani pre-wedding bash might have hit headlines earlier this year with its lavish parties, nine page dress code and 1000 A-lister guests. But it is far from the end of the events Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant are throwing ahead of their nuptials on July 12.

In fact, the bride and groom-to-be are hosting a lavish cruise throughout Europe this week in their second extravagant pre-wedding party. The couple have invited 800 A-lister guests aboard a luxury cruise liner which will sail from Palermo to Portofino over the course of three days. But this will be no ordinary voyage; among the lavish events hosted on board will be a masquerade ball and a Roman toga party. Guests, which will include Bollywood megastars like Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, will dine on a variety of Indian, Italian and French dishes at the event.

Sources speaking to The Times called the event ‘a command performance’, adding, ‘The Ambanis are India ’s most powerful family, they flex huge social and financial influence… no one would turn down an invitation. They’re a marker of the social pecking order.’

Radhika during the pre-wedding celebrations

The couple have wowed onlookers across the world with their pre-wedding events this year, which have included a huge celebration awash with A-listers as well as Merchant's slightly lower key bachelorette party.

It's set to be the ‘society wedding of the year’, but there’s a chance that the marriage of Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, and Olivia Henson could play a part in altering the centuries-old inheritance law that critics are calling ‘constitutionally sexist'

The first pre-wedding bash was awash with A-listers and some of the world’s most powerful people, including Karlie Kloss, Ivanka Trump, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg. They were joined by legends of cricket, politicians, the King and Queen of Bhutan and Larry Fink. Along with the hundreds of other guests, these global elites travelled to Jamangar, Gujarat, India , to revel in the three day celebration, which anticipated the nuptials of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant.

According to reports, the celebrations cost as much as $152. But what did they look like from the inside? The first thing you need to know is that of that $152m, $6m is reported to have been dedicated to hiring out one of the world’s most famous performers: Rihanna, who gave a private concert for partygoers in Jamangar, reportedly even twerking with the bride-to-be on the dancefloor. Rihanna’s partner, A$AP Rocky was also seen mingling and taking photos with guests.

So who are the Ambani dynasty behind the notable nuptials of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant? India's richest man, and the tenth wealthiest in the world, Mukesh Ambani runs Reliance Industries (worth $110 billion according to Forbes ), which has interests in energy, telecom, retail and financial services, and hopes to pivot towards green energy in the future. In true Succession style , the multi-billion mega company was established by Mukesh’s late father, Dhirubhai in 1966. Ambani's three children joined the board of Reliance in August 2023. The groom-to-be and Mukesh’s youngest son, Anant, is in the energy side of the business.

The family has ties with the UK on several fronts. Firstly, 2019 saw Mukesh Ambani purchase the stalwart of the British high street, Hamleys, for an undisclosed sum. The Ambanis also own the grand Stoke Park in Buckinghamshire , which was reportedly bought for a grand sum of £57 million. The spectacular Georgian pile is a remarkable feat of British design, from the Capability Brown parklands to the James Wyatt architecture. The family home was turned into an English country club in 1908, where its members included Prince Albert. The property is a stone’s throw from Windsor and Cliveden, firmly placing the Ambanis in the centre of British countryside society life.

Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani pose for the media during their engagement, at Antilia on January 19, 2023 in Mumbai

Their home in Mumbai is similarly regal, with an Indian-based socialite previously telling Tatler that their vast apartment block ‘looks nothing like Buckingham Palace but essentially it is Buckingham Palace in that it’s the most luxurious real estate in Mumbai and the general public will know the house .’ The ‘tower’, called Antilia, boasts a ballroom, a 50-seat theatre , a temple, three helipads, a 168-car garage and enough space for a staff of 600. The source goes on to explain that whilst ‘everyone in Mumbai knows who the Ambani family is,’ the family are reasonably private. Despite their auspiciousness, they apparently know how to host a good party.

Indeed, Anant’s elder sister Isha was married in 2018 with similarly fabulous surrounding events. The wedding reportedly cost $100 million, and included an engagement ceremony in Lake Como, a 16-piece ‘ghagra’ or embroidered skirt in pearly white and a very special ceremony in Mumbai, where entire streets leading up to the venue were adorned with thousands of fresh flowers in orange and red. The elder of the two brothers, Akash, had the British icons Coldplay perform at his wedding, Isha had none other than the Queen of Pop, Beyoncé.

Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan , Alia Bhatt, Salman Khan , and former Indian men’s cricket team captain MS Dhoni are among the 800 guests expected to attend the second lavish pre-wedding bash of the youngest son of Asia’s richest man Mukesh Ambani .

Twenty eight-year-old Anant Ambani’s wedding to childhood sweetheart Radhika Merchant is set to take place on 12 July, but the four-day luxury cruise, starting 29 May, is already setting expectations for extravagant wedding celebrations .

Ms Merchant, 29, is from a family with business interest in pharmaceuticals.

According to the invite, which has gone viral on social media, the theme for the cruise is La Vite E Un Viaggio – translating to Life is a Journey – and promises guests “an adventure of a lifetime”.

According to Indian media reports, the festivities kicked off with a welcome lunch for the guests who boarded a luxury cruise liner on 29 May, which set off for a 4,380kms voyage from Palermo to the South of France and then back, and was then followed by a Starry Night-themed evening gala.

Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries, Radhika Merchant and Nita Ambani, share a moment during the pre-wedding celebrations of Anant Ambani and Radhika in Jamnagar, Gujarat, India

On 30th May, guests were to be taken on a sightseeing tour of Rome, ending with a toga party at night.

On Friday, a party to celebrate the first birthday of Veda, Mukesh Ambani’s granddaughter by his oldest son Akash Ambani, will be held during the day. The evening will see a masquerade ball in Cannes.

The revelry will conclude on 1 June with a party titled La Dolce Vita in Portofino, meant to capture the spirit of an Italian summer.

Guests have been given a detailed itinerary complete with dress codes for each party, ranging from “classic cruise” wear to Greco-Roman inspired looks for the toga party. Merchant is expected to don a “Galactic Princess” dress created using aero aluminium, by New York-based designer Grace Ling.

The Ambanis have spared no expense, as a team of 600 staff has been commissioned to pamper guests while on the cruise.

Bollywood actors Ranbir Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Karisma Kapoor, Karan Johar, Ananya Panday, Janhvi Kapoor, Sara Ali Khan, Ibrahim Ali Khan, Disha Patani and social media influencer Orry have all reportedly left for the cruise, according to paparazzi.

While not much information on the cruise is expected to be available, since a no-cell phones -policy is being strictly enforced, some information has trickled out.

A video doing the rounds on social media shows popular US boy band Backstreet Boys performing at the Starry Night themed party.

The wedding celebrations kicked off with the first pre-wedding celebration held in Mukesh Ambani’s hometown Jamnagar in March, where he reportedly spent $150m. The three-day festivities included a performance by US singer Rihanna, bejewelled elephants, and the who’s who of Bollywood performing for 1,200 guests, which included Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg and Ivanka Trump.

Mukesh Ambani is Asia’s richest man and a renowned oil and telecommunications tycoon, competing closely with billionaire Gautam Adani, chair of Adani Group of companies, according to the real-time billionaires list worldwide compiled by Forbes as of 30 January 2024.

The Ambani family, with an estimated net worth of $113bn (£89.53bn), according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, runs India’s leading conglomerates in all sectors – petroleum refining and marketing, organised retail, telecommunication giant Jio and other digital streaming services.

Bride Carries Beloved Dog Instead of Bouquet on Wedding Day: ‘It Was Only Fitting’

"The guests didn't know if they were going to cry or laugh," bride Joelle Yuvienco tells PEOPLE

cruise instead of wedding

OAK ST. STUDIOS

Joelle Yuvienco knew she didn’t want to carry flowers for her wedding, but when she saw her pup Sago looking on as she took photos on the morning of her nuptials, she made a last-second decision to carry the dog down the aisle instead.

“The guests didn’t know if they were going to cry or laugh at Sago’s cuteness,” Yuvienco, 32, tells PEOPLE of the surprise (even groom Lenard Santos, 31, was shocked!).

Yuvienco and Santos wed on April 4, 2024, in Mahogany Place Tagaytay, the Philippines. The couple first met on Bumble, so decided to give their big day a Bumble theme, with Sago donning a bumble bee dress for her big moment.

In lieu of other flowers (the wedding party skipped bouquets and boutonnières, too), Yuvienco had flowers on both her nails and veil.

Sago was "comfortable" during her moment in the spotlight, and Yuvienco say she's "so happy" with her last minute decision.

"I am humbled by how many people have been sharing so much love for Sago," she shares. "She's my soul dog and having her introduced to the world like this is the most special thing. It was also so wonderful seeing other brides follow suit for their own furry companions too!"

Man bought apartment on cruise ship as it's cheaper than home and he can travel world

Man bought apartment on cruise ship as it's cheaper than home and he can travel world

Living on a cruise ship sounds like a pretty sweet life for someone who works remotely and loves to travel the world.

Dylan Murray

While many enjoy living an adventurous lifestyle, few can incorporate it into their routine 24/7 as they wish they could.

Due to the nature of most jobs, social obligations, and general tasks required of people across the world not being very adventurous, few people are capable of incorporating that 'Carpe Diem' mindset into everything they do.

However, this much can’t be said for Austin Wells, who purchased an apartment on a cruise ship and lives his life very differently than the average person.

The man from San Diego, California, bought a 12-year lease for an apartment on the MV Narrative, a cruise ship that travels across the world and features several amenities.

The MV Narrative is a luxury cruise ship planned to set sail in 2025. (Storylines)

With 20 dining establishments , three pools, a library, a movie theater, a gym, and plenty more, the cruise ship is a highly desirable vacation for many lovers of the sea. However, you must assume that living on board is a whole different animal and must be quite expensive, right?

Well, for starters, Austin did pay $300,000 for his 12-year lease, at least three of which will be spent traveling across the world.

Considering the median home price in Austin’s hometown of San Diego is well over $900,000 in 2024 (and over $400,000 countrywide), this is actually quite cost-effective.

While his living quarters are about what you’d expect for a cabin on a cruise ship, Austin’s love for traveling made the positives of living on the MV Narrative outweigh the negatives.

“I don’t have to upend my daily routine,” Austin explained to CNBC, “I’m going from this model where you want to go somewhere, you pack a bag, you get on a flight, you rent a room, to now my condo, my gym, my doctors and dentists, all of my grocery stores travel the world with me.”

Imagine being able to call this home? (Getty Stock Image)

Austin is able to manage this lifestyle due to being a fully remote worker for Meta, so it is not necessary for him to remain in one place to work and generate income to live off of.

“My working hours will be shifted towards evenings, nights, and very early mornings,” Austin continued, “But that does open up the ability for me to … maybe see a city midday to afternoon and then start my workday around 6pm or 7pm.”

While the MV Narrative doesn’t set sail until next year, Austin is excited about his unique opportunity to live a life at sea, adding: “This is probably the first time ever that there is even the ability to have a standard job and even consider working and living from a floating apartment complex.”
