  • Pune to Bangalore Road Trip

Hi, I would like to share our first long journey trip via road in our toyatafortuner car.  My husband, my 2 lovely kids and I love travelling,  so we normally  plan our trip well  in advance. This time around, we suddenly planned to travel to Bangalore via road from pune.  My husband and I were excited and at the same time worried if we could make it.  We referred to some reviews but couldn’t get 100% details, hence, the idea of  writing about our trip in detail , I thought,  will help many who plan to travel, especially for the first time.  At the end of this report , I have also given a detail report about the toll booths and the amount to be paid .

Pune to Kolhapur

We started on Friday 12th May at 6.30 a.m., as we wanted to avoid the city traffic which will start after 7.30.  Even then , there were a lot of tourist buses and trucks on the  road till Satara.  We halted at  Hotel Abhiruchi , near Satara for breakfast at 8 a.m. We started again at 8.30,  The Quality of  Road was  okay, but you will  have to drive cautiously as there were many trucks , 2 wheelers and people crossing  especially near Satara. we reached Kolhapur at 11.15 a.mthe distance  approx..  was 240 kms. from pune.  .. Since, we wanted to do a bit of sight-seeing in  Kolhapur, we halted that day there.

In Kolhapur,  we had booked at Chandralok suite ,  which was not up to our expectations and was only moderate.  We wanted to book a hotel somewhere close to the bangalore highway, but since it was  a peak season, no other rooms were available . our hotel was like a guest house.when I saw the ad and review in booking.com I got a different picture of this room.  The afternoon went off very bad , we couldn’t rest as the A/c. in the bedroom was not working Contrary to their ad there was  no bunk bed for the kids, and somy husband had to manage sleeping  on the sofa  in the living room.

The cost of the room was around 3900/- per day,  but I didn’t find the facilities upto the cost they charge.  The  kitchen and bathrooms  could have been more neat.  Evening at 4 p.m., We went to the famous laxmi temple and did a bit of Kolhapur sight-seeing, the weather was excellent .   We used the local transport (auto) in kolhapur , compared to pune I felt the auto drivers were very cordial and the rates also not very high. There was a reasonable amount of crowd in the temple but got the darshan within 1 hr.   Outside the temple, I  just enjoyed the sight of the lilies and the lotus flowers all over the market. We enjoyed the rain after the scorching heat in the afternoons.

 Kolhapur to Bangalore

Next day, exactly at 5 a.m., we started off to Bangalore. Bye ..Bye… chandralok suite! We filled our petrol tank full immediately as we reached the highway.  The road  here was excellent and  very smooth and there weren’t much traffic at this time of the hour, so my husband could easily drive at 100 to 120 km/hr.

Entered Karnataka. The beautiful first rays of the sunrise.

Nearing Belgaum. Thoroughly enjoyed the scenery and the weather was excellent and perfect for this drive.

Around 6.40 a.m. we reached belgaum bypass.  You will not find any restaurants on the highway till kittur  so if you are person who has early breakfast, its better to carry some snacks .  We stopped for our breakfast at Kamat Upachar at 7.20 a.m..  The food was very good.  I was so excited to talk in kannada after a long time.

KamatUpacharrestaurant – halted here for breakfast.

This poster we clicked inside the restaurant. Later found out that there are Kamatupachar almost every 120km. until u reach Bangalore.

If we miss this eatery, then you find Ramya residency in another 2 kms from there, but not sure how the restaurant is as we did not stop there.  After that we found 2 to 3 more restos near hubli, but we did not bother to halt anywhere.  We came across a few café coffee day also on the way.  It is a single lane from Hubli to Dharwad , hence the speed also reduces to 60 km/hr. as we were not able to overtake the trucks  and the road is also not so smooth.

You will come across a temple of gomateshwara  (around 14 kms. after hubli) on your left side.  The toll bill given at the nandi highway ie.Hubli – Dharwad bypass has to be shown on the other side so keep it safe. At 10.30 we reached Chitradurga, the city of Forts,  do enjoy seeing the mountains.  the weather was excellent so we really enjoyed the drive.

Chitradurga bypass.

Around 1 p.m. we took a break for lunch in tumkur.  There were many Kamat Upachar all the way through, but we chose to stop near tumkur.  Immediately after the tumkur toll there was this Kamat.  The lunch was excellent .  They also serve in the traditional banana leaf.  Enjoyed the food,  the quality was very nice. We took quite sometime  at this restaurant and left by 2 p.m. to Bangalore.  We reached the turn to BEL Circle road by 2.30 and since our destination was new bel road, we only had little traffic near the bel circle, and reached our destination by 3 pm.

So, the total time taken for us after all the breaks from Kolhapur to Bangalore was 10 hrs.

Back to Pune

We left back to pune after 3 days stay in Bangalore.  Again, we started early by 5 a.m. from new bel road,  as we wanted to cross tumkur before the traffic starts.  The journey was very dry this side ,  we had problems to find a good restaurant for our breakfast.  There were many café coffee day, but we didn’t find any restaurants where we will come across some nice breakfast.

With the speed of 100- 120 km/hr., we reached near kolhapur by 1 p.m. and atlastwe  found smile stone restaurant , which was good.  After that there were many restaurants, until you reach pune, but since the traffic was heavy, there are many road works going on and the local traffics are merged with the highway, it took more than 4 hrs. for us to cover the 240 kms. fromkolapur to pune.  We reached our destination in pune by 6.20 p.m..  I would like to say that if one has enough time , he/she should try the roadways.   This trip was a very memorable one and  We Enjoyed it. 

Welcome aboard Pushkala.

I love road trips, more so the longer ones. I noticed that there are as many as 15 Toll Booths. I would guess that it is high time government begins to implement some kind of NHAI Smart Card which works on all Toll Booths. If we leave a few expressways, most of them are controlled by NHAI though they outsource the collection to a agency.

Your tips around restaurants is very useful for fellow traveller. I have never driven on this route (except Goa to Mumbai, so did Kolhapur and Mahalaxmi Temple). May be one day, I do get to drive from Mumbai to Blr.

Thanks again for sharing this.

Shillong, Meghalaya – the abode in the clouds

We were told by the locals that surprisingly in Cherrapunji it rains mostly at night. Thus, the day-to-day activity is not really disrupted by the rain.
However, the irony is that despite perennial rainfall, Cherrapunji faces an acute shortage of drinking water, and the inhabitants often have to trek for miles to obtain potable water.

The best highway food joints near Bengaluru: Part-1—North Karnataka

By Anurag Mallick and Priya Ganapathy

A pick of the best eateries outside Bengaluru

When it comes to highway eateries, there are trustworthy yet formulaic chains like A2B (Adyar Ananda Bhavan), Adiga's, MTR, Maiya's or Kamat Upachar serving standard South Indian veg fare–you know what to expect. They come with ample parking, clean loos and are often attached to a food court or fuel station. Then there are millennial/hipster joints–the pet-friendly Rasta Café on the Mysore highway, Pitstop Restro Café on NH-4 between Hubli and Belgaum and others en route to Nandi Hills off the Hyderabad Highway. But somewhere in between lies the true taste of Karnataka–messes, military hotels and highway pitstops known for their local flavours and signature dishes. Here's what to look out for when you drive out…

In the first of this three-part series, a look at the best highway stops in North Karnataka ( Part 2: South Karnataka ; Part 3: Coastal Karnataka )

NH-48/Mumbai-Pune-Bengaluru Highway

Pavithra idli hotel, kyathasandra, tumkur, for benne idli/masala dosa.

The pick of idli hotels at Tumkur's suburb Kyathasandra, Pavithra–to borrow Amul's tagline–is utterly butterly delicious. Travellers throng here for spongy thatte idli with butter, benne masala dosa and chitranna. Portraits of the divine trinity of Sandalwood cinema (Dr Rajkumar, Vishnuvardhan and Ambareesh) dominate the wall. Chutney-sagu is unlimited and plonked on every table in twin containers. It's always packed; more so on weekends! Location: Near Karnataka Bank ATM on NH-48, 60km from Bengaluru and 12km before Tumkur Ph: 97434 70143 Timings: 6:45am-10:05pm Tip: Enroute Tumkur, take a right u-turn at Kyathasandra Bus Stop intersection onto the service road.

Purohit Hotel, Sira, for North Indian fare

Turking for good ol' North Indian highway food down south – dal fry, bhindi masala, baingan bharta, palak paneer, tamatar sev with ghee phulkas/rotla (bajra roti) topped off with lassi or masala chai? Fret no more. Plop on a charpoy or grab a table and relish Rajasthani flavours at Purohit in Sira. In stark contrast to its humble appearance, you'll find Beemers, Audis and ritzy cars parked outside! Location: Near the BPCL Petrol Pump/Kamat Upachar just before Sira on NH-48 midway between Tumkur (50km) and Hiriyur (43km) Ph: 08135-275444, 90285 51444 Timings: 11am-4:30pm, 7:30pm-10:30pm Tips: Space is limited, but the onions aren't!

Satara Highway Dhaba, Chitradurga for capsicum masala (and its staff!)

Satara Highway Dhaba is truly unique as it's run exclusively by transgenders. In 2010, Bhavana Thimmappa chucked hustling at Hebbal Flyover and returned to Chitradurga to open a dhaba with a bank loan, roping in Raziyamma, Lathika and Thilaka. Bhavanamma's heartwarming story to reclaim her dignity is backed by homely veg food (excellent dal fry & capsicum masala), eggs on request and kadak chai. A stopover at the fort demands idli-jeera soup at New Mysore Café and dosas at Sri Laxmi Bhavan Tiffin Room on Chikkapete Main Road near Aanebagilu. Hotel Aishwarya Fort off Pune-Bangalore Highway boasts local fare–mandakki oggarne, Hubli Chicken and ragi mudde with naati koli saru (country chicken ) and ragi unde (laddus). Location: 223km from Bengaluru on NH-48 at Doddasivvannahalli before Chitradurga Ph: 9844229987, 91527 51626 Timings: 24 hours Tip: In town, Reddy Military Hotel serves good mutton biryani on Tue, Fri and Sun!

Davanagere, for its benne dosa and mandakki

Mensinkayi bajji at TS Manjunath Swamy Masala Mandakki Angadi

Mensinkayi bajji (chili fritters) at TS Manjunath Swamy Masala Mandakki Angadi

Many bikers make a 4-hr rip to Davanagere from Bangalore just for its legendary benne dosa for brekker and ride back… it's that good! Made on a wood fire with atrocious amounts of benne (white butter), it is served in pairs with potato mash and coconut chutney. Eat at Sri Guru Kottureshwara on Medical College Road or Old Sagar Benne Dosa Hotel. Location: 26 km from Bengaluru on NH-48 midway between Chitradurga (60km) and Ranebennur (44km), just 1 km off the highway Ph: 9449135100 Timings: 7:30am-9:30pm Tip: Mandakki (puffed rice) is another local favourite. Try masala, khara (spicy) or Nargis mandakki with mensinkayi bajji (chili fritters) at TS Manjunath Swamy Masala Mandakki Angadi on Lawyer Road.

Hotel Milan Savaji, Dharwad, for Savji thali

Savji Mutton Curry

Location: 424km from Bengaluru at Jubilee Circle intersection of Pune-Bangalore Road with College Road and Dharwad-Belgaum Road. Niyaaz Hotel, Belagavi, for Belgaum biryani

Belagaum biryani

They have outlets in Goa, Kolhapur and Gokak besides multiple chains across town, though the original PB Road is easily reachable. North Karnataka

Ballari for cycle khova.

Cycle Khova

Cycle Khova

Ballari (formerly Bellary) is renowned for its delectable khova (caramelized milk sweet). Dispensed from brass containers in sal leaf plates, it was sold by local hawkers across the city on bicycles and gained fame as ‘Bellary Cycle Khova'. Location: 307km from Bengaluru, follow NH-48 to Hiriyur and take the right diversion via Challakere on NH-150A to Ballari Abid Cycle Khova Store Ph 9901824292 Tip: Look out for bicycle vendors or buy from shops on Bangalore Road.

Korthi-Kolhar for matka dahi

Matka dahi

The 3km Korthi-Kolhar bridge, the longest in Karnataka, affords such scenic views of the Almatti Dam that you might overshoot the Upper Krishna Project (UKP) Circle on NH-218. The crowd is not usual highway traffic; they are all snared at the rows of stalls selling gadige mosaru or ‘matka dahi'. The creamy curd is set in sooty earthen pots, covered with newspaper, tied with a string. No ordinary curd this! Made from the milk of buffaloes fed on native grasses and straws of pearl millet, pulses and local wild bean grown naturally on the banks of the Krishna river, the terroir gives the curd its unique flavour. After boiling, milk is poured into earthen pots, heated on a charcoal stove to thicken before the curd is set. The pot absorbs excess water and the thick curd doesn't sour for days! Served with a sprinkle of avalakki (rice flakes), salt and shenga pudi (groundnut chutney), take-aways are must! Location: North of the Korthi-Kolhar bridge on NH-218 or Hubballi-Vijayapura highway, roughly midway between Bagalkot (35km) and Bijapur (47km). Tip: Try fresh river fish fry and bhakri (jowar roti) at the tiny eateries there.

Vijaya Karadant, Amingad, for karadant

Karandant

As you turn from Hungund towards Amingad on SH-20, you find shops advertising ‘karadant'. A desi version of a granola bar, it comprises cashew, almonds, pistachio, fig, dates, kopra, jaggery and antu (edible gum). In rural Karnataka, the dry fruit super snack was traditionally given to wrestlers, bodybuilders and pregnant women. Pick up from the original Vijaya Kardant, whose founder Savaligappa Aiholi invented it in 1907! Location: 12km west of Hungund on SH-20/Raichur-Bagalkot Highway Ph: 8123115005;  www.amingadkaradant.com Timings: 7am–10pm

Bangalore-Honnavar Road

Preethi canteen, birur, for khali dosa and benne masala.

While driving on Bangalore-Shivamogga Road via Arasikere, Preethi Canteen at Birur is a popular pitstop for delectable benne khali dosa, benne masala dosa, mosaru/dahi vada and mandakki with strong tea. Space is limited though they also serve at your car. Location: 240km from Bengaluru at Birur on Tumkur-Hagalvadi Road Ph: 9448665847 Timings: 7:30am-12:30pm, 4:30pm-8:30pm (Thurs holiday) Tip: Open at fixed times (benne khali for brekker and benne masala dosa as evening snack) so time your visit accordingly.

Town Canteen, Chikmagalur, for Benne Dosa, Malnad coffee/kashaya

Benne masala dosa, strong Chikmagalur coffee (or Malnad kashaya) and hot gulab jamuns – what's not to love? Town Canteen has been dishing South Indian staples since the 60's and its central location makes it a convenient stopover. Location: 245km from Bengaluru via NH-75, on Rathnagiri Road opposite the Government Polytechnic on SH-57. Sri Bhavani Hotel, Mandagadde, for meen oota

Meen oota

Mandagadde is famous for its bird sanctuary, but the riverside haunt attracts highway travellers for the mandatory meenina oota or ‘fish meals' by the wayside. From gojale meen (butter catfish) to awlu meen (bullseye snakehead), they serve a mean tawa fry and gravy served with rice roti or rice. Road Trip from Pune to Bangalore – Part 2

savaari-sunset-park

I am sitting in this beautiful park watching the most beautiful sunset when all of a sudden I think of the dreadful Monday approaching us quickly. After a tiring but an equally amazing Saturday, which was the second day of our road trip, we were to explore Karnataka now. Going back to the hustle of the cities was an unappealing thought. We decided to continue the trip after our visit to the Gokak Falls, but traveling through the roads of Karnataka after sunset meant that we would be unable to experience the beautiful landscapes and capture it for posterity!

Belgaum to Karwar –

savaari-rabindranath-tagore-beach

So there it was – the third section of our road trip, which was to start from Belgaum and take us to Karwar. Karwar is a hidden gem that has become a go-to destination for many travelers seeking peace and quiet. Goa is fun, but the over-crowded beaches, the noisy partying and the general air of commercialism can get on one’s nerves. We left for our first stop quite early- 3.30 am. Getting everyone out of their room was a pain. Once in the car, our slacking enthusiasm revived with each additional kilometer. The best part of road trips is a simple truth that once you hit the road, there is no going back. You leave it all behind to embrace the new and the unexpected.

Karwar is 4 hours away from Belgaum. We had assumed that we would be at the beach by 9 AM for a hot breakfast and some chilled beers but our car broke down 20 minutes after we started off. It took us 45 minutes to fix the tyres and by this point, we were a little apprehensive, given the ungodly hour and the remote stretch of road.  However, nothing untoward happened and after fixing the tyre, we set out again. At day-break, we stopped for a quick breakfast of egg bonda and some mind-blowing filter coffee from a roadside eatery which considerably lifted our spirits. If only it were possible to come down every Sunday to enjoy this meal!  After two more stops- a lunch and a tea break, we were in Karwar.

When you enter Karwar, the two islands in the sea greet you pleasantly. Karwar’s beauty is unmatched and its beaches, well-maintained. The sheer beauty of this little coastal area has inspired poets like Rabindranath Tagore to write some of the world’s most evocative poetry. Sitting on the beach with the waves ferociously approaching us only to retreat as quickly as they arrived made everything around so simple yet serene. Nature’s gentle touch allows us to escape the complexity of our own mind, and instead, find peace in the simplicity of beauty. Sitting on the beach and watching the waves appear and vanish has been one of my most favorite highlights of this trip. So there it was, our first dose of Vitamin Sea! Our tanned faces made some of the best Instagram stories. Not to forget we were being followed very keenly by our office colleagues on our social media handles.

Karwar to Gokarna –

tourist places on pune bangalore highway

With a relaxed and serene experience at Rabindranath Tagore beach, we were to stop briefly at Gokarna for some amazing food. Only a two-hour drive, our driver who took us around, suggested we eat at Prema Restaurant. A shabby-looking restaurant, we all wondered if we wanted to risk a date with every road trippers worst nightmare- an upset stomach. However, after some deliberation, we decided to go with his recommendation. As we entered, a warm, gentleman in his 50s approached us with the widest smile you would have ever seen. He suggested a few dishes, but the variety of food this restaurant sold, really surprised us all. You get everything under its roof! From Italian pasta to Israeli dishes, this place served everything we could have imagined. The food simply won our hearts! Their home-made ice creams are absolutely delectable and hit the spot in the hot evening. Shreya insisted that we try one of their dishes called Gadbad only because it sounded funny. But turns out, Gadbad stole our hearts too. A little paradise with some amazing food, Prema was an amazing introduction to Gokarna. I am pretty sure, none of us will waste a second to pack our bags and visit this place again.

With this, our second day came to an end. We checked in to a hotel to spend our last night in Karnataka. Sleeping peacefully in two rooms, we passed out faster than drunk maniacs. The much-needed dose of Vitamin Sea after the dewy lush green valleys in Maharashtra, made us all wonder how many different types of terrains and climates we have crossed in these two days! Well, that’s exactly why road trips are so much fun. Stay tuned for part 3. I promise you all, it will be the last part.

Karnataka is bordered by such beautiful states and Bangalore is a city that connects all these places. Sitting in the heart of South India, flanked by all the states of the region, Bangalore and its vicinity is blessed with endless natural and man-made wonders, making this the perfect starting point for uncountable road trips and places to visit nearby.

Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshin Kannada are the three districts that merge together to form this scenic stretch defined by the Western Ghats on the east, and Arabian Sea on the west.

The evenings tend to be slightly chilly due to the dense forestation throughout the state, so be sure to pack light woollens.
