How Can I Find Cheap Cruises Out of Boston in 2024?

The easiest way to find a cheap cruise from Boston is to sort your results by price. When searching for Boston cruises, prices already include any discounts, which means that you will see cheaper options even if they are normally more expensive. This is a great way to find a cruise that would normally be outside your budget. It's a good idea to be flexible on your 2024 departure date to find the best deals, as cruise lines out of Boston will tend to offer the best deals on staterooms at times when they have difficulty filling the ship.

Which Cruise Lines Operate Out of Boston?

Cruises out of Boston in 2024 are operated by a variety of lines including Norwegian , Holland America , Celebrity, and Royal Caribbean. This gives plenty of choices for your cruise vacation. You will find options here for couples, families, groups, etc. The cruise ships from Boston tend to be large ship cruises with lots of activities that are absolutely great for families with children.

How Can I Find Good Cruise Deals out of Boston?

To find great cruise deals from Boston look for our green box that features specific cruise deals and cruise discounts for each trip when available. These results will appear at the top when you sort by price. Make sure to take into account what perks and amenities are included. Sometimes it can be worth paying a bit extra for a cruise that, say, includes wi-fi and/or a drinks package, depending on what you are likely to use. Boston is a great departure point for certain Caribbean cruises and one of the best for getting a reasonably priced cruise up through New England and Nova Scotia. Choosing a cruise from Boston to Canada will reduce your at-sea time and thus costs too.

What Should I Look Out For When Booking a Cruise from Boston 2024?

First of all, make sure that the itinerary is what you are looking for. Also, make sure that your chosen Boston cruise ship has the amenities you crave. Also, consider the time of year; cruises that take place during breaks from school are more likely to have families with children. Being flexible on departure dates for your 2024 cruise leaving from Boston can help you get the best deal and have a better chance of booking the stateroom you want on the deck you want. Canada and New England cruises in the fall as well as the North Atlantic-focused transatlantic cruises can result in chilly temperatures out on the deck, so consider your temperature tolerance (and, of course, pack accordingly).

Where Are the Best Places to Go On Cruises Leaving From Boston in 2024?

The two most popular destinations out of Boston are Canada/New England and Bermuda. It is also the US departure/arrival port for some of the transatlantic cruises offered by Holland America. You can get a regular Caribbean cruise as well. These are all great destinations, depending on your tastes. If you want to spend several days in one place, the cruises from Boston to Bermuda are a great option as they tend to sail out and then moor to give you time to explore the island and a bit more freedom than many cruises offer. If you want to see some truly spectacular scenery and interesting wildlife, consider a Canada/New England cruise or, if you have the budget, a transatlantic cruise that explores Greenland and Iceland. These destinations can, of course, be cold even in summer, but it's worth it!

What Are Some Good All-Inclusive Boston Cruises?

Most of the cruise ships leaving from Boston are not truly all-inclusive, although they do include main dining, youth programs, onboard entertainment and basic drinks. This varies by line, so do check. To get an all-inclusive cruise from Boston you will need to select an offer that includes it. You should weigh how much you will use the amenities before purchasing a package. For example, most people these days need wi-fi, but a shore excursion package is only worth it if you know you are going to use it.

What Are Some Great Family Cruises From Boston?

Almost all of the cruise ships out of Boston,, include youth programs in the price of the ticket for 3 to 17-year-olds. What's offered varies, of course, by line and ship, but family cruises from Boston are easy to find. Bermuda cruises from Boston are great for families as you can spend time doing whatever you want on the island and not have to worry, for at least part of the time, about your ship sailing without you because the kids held you up. (Note, this is why it's usually best to take an official shore excursion because then the ship will wait for you). Your kids might, of course, have an opinion on the destination, but New England/Canada cruises tend to attract an older crowd, and there might be fewer other kids for them to hang out with.

What Are Some Good Adults-Only Cruises From Boston?

As the Boston cruise lines use mostly large ships, there are usually no specific adults-only cruises. All of the cruises have youth programs, which can help keep adults and kids separated. Your best bet to avoid a lot of families is to choose dates when kids are in school. The four-night Bermuda Cruise on the Norwegian Pearl is a great choice for a short romantic getaway. Check amenities to find the best cruise ships out of Boston for your particular trip.

What Are Some Good Singles Cruises From Boston?

Cruise lines mostly use large ships, and therefore do not usually have specific singles cruises out of Boston. However, it's worth considering a Norwegian cruise from Boston as they have great deals for solo travelers. Their ships have staterooms designed for solo travelers (so you are not paying for two people) and a Studio Lounge to meet other single cruisers.

Are There Any Christmas Cruises from Boston?

Because it is so far north, Boston has few to no sailings between November and April, so there are no Christmas cruises. Boston itself is, of course, a great place to experience a white Christmas.

What Are Some Great Gay Cruises out of Boston?

There are no specific gay cruises leaving from Boston. However, all four of the cruise lines that operate are considered very friendly to gay and lesbian travelers, especially Celebrity.

How do I Book a Cruise from Boston in 2024 on Expedia?

Simply browse our pre-selected Boston Cruise deals or set Boston as your departure destination. You can also narrow down your search by selecting an arrival destination and departure dates, as well as filtering by cruise line and ship. Too tight a search may give you no results, so if you do, then widen your parameters to find the best cruises out of Boston. You can also search by duration, helping you find good two-night cruises from Boston, or 7-day cruises from Boston, depending on how much time you have to spend. Weekend cruises out of Boston are a great break.

How can I find last-minute cruise deals from Boston?

Cruise lines operating out of Boston often have cabins they want to fill at the last minute. Enter your departure date and set Boston as the departure port. Available deals will be marked with a green box. You can sort by departure date to find the closest sailing to your time. A last-minute deal, if you are flexible, can give you a great discount on the cruise.

Do I need a passport to cruise from Boston?

This depends on the destination and where your cruise ends. A closed-loop cruise is one that starts and ends in the same US port, and the itinerary must consist of contiguous territories of the US, meaning that they share a land or direct sea border. If you are taking a closed-loop cruise, you do not need a passport. This includes all Canada/New England sailings, sailings to Bermuda, and most Caribbean itineraries. For transatlantic cruises, you will need a passport. Also, anyone who is not a US citizen will need a passport to take these cruises.

Can I Cancel My Cruise Booking?

If you need to cancel your booking for any reason, you can do so from your My trips page or by contacting customer service. Bear in mind that cruise lines have different cancellation policies, which will determine how much of a refund you get.

Why should I book a Cruise From Boston with Expedia?

Booking through Expedia is convenient and gives you access to search tools that can help you find the right ship and destination for your Boston cruises 2024 vacation. You can also become an Expedia Rewards member and get points for future travel.

Boston is a city that’s full of history, being one of the oldest municipalities in the United States. Therefore, there’s an abundance of ancient artifacts, museums, and galleries to explore. But aside from being a history buff’s paradise, it’s also a bustling city with plenty of boutiques, bars, and a rich food scene.

You can explore on your own or with an entertaining 18th-century-themed guided tour. There’s also an aquarium, a Children’s Museum, a variety of Art Museums, and the interactive Boston Tea Party Ships and Museum.

In regards to food, Boston’s signature dish is clam chowder, which was introduced to New England in the 18th century. Other must-tries are Boston Baked Beans, Lobster Rolls, Oysters, Cannoli’s, and the beloved Boston Cream Pie. Don’t forget to stop by a brewery, or take a walk along Newbury Street for all of your shopping needs, with dozens of unique boutiques and designer stores.

Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet).

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. At night, enjoy one of five shows at the onboard theater.

When it comes to food, Seven Seas Splendor offers eight eateries ranging from casual to fine dining. Enjoy your breakfast alfresco at La Veranda and grub down for lunch at the Pool Grill buffet. For something more formal, opt for a French-inspired meal at Chartreuse, Pan-Asian dishes at Pacific Rim or Compass Rose, the largest restaurant on the ship.

Seven Seas Splendor visits a variety of European and Mediterranean destinations, as well as ports across Europe, the Caribbean, Africa and South America.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Upcoming itineraries on the Viking Mars include cruises with ports of call in Iceland, Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain, the U.S. and Canada.

Port Boston is owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (abbrev MASSPORT). Boston is a major cargo port (the largest in Massachusetts USA), one of the principal East Coast USA ports, and also New England's largest city, with population around 680,000. Flynn Cruiseport Boston supports ~2200 local jobs and annually generates ~USD 136 million in economic activities.

Port Boston (locode USBOS) has been historically important for the city's growth. It was built in the early-18th-century (1710-21) and was originally positioned downtown (the current Long Wharf Pier). After major land reclamation projects, this area is no longer open to commercial shipping traffic, excluding the ferries . Port's main cargo handling facilities are now in the neighborhoods Charlestown, South Boston, East Boston, and also in Everett MA.

MassPort (1956-established) maintains its own police force. Its officers are responsible for law enforcement and physical security at all port terminals and MassPort-owned properties. In 2010, Massport invested USD 11 million to renovate Black Falcon Cruise Terminal.

Port Boston is approx 3 km (2 mi) from Faneuil Hall (Government Center) and Freedom Trail (4 km / 2,5 mi long pathway passing by 16 historic locations). The annual number of visiting/mainly domestic tourists is 16+ million, many of whom arrive on cruise ships. Among the big-ship cruise companies with scheduled calls at Port Boston are RCI-Royal Caribbean, HAL-Holland America, NCL-Norwegian, Cunard, Princess, Celebrity, Oceania. The USA-flagged ACL-American Cruise Lines is among Boston's regular homeporting companies. ACL offers from the city two very popular roundtrip itineraries:

  • 7-night "The Cape Codder Cruise" that visits ports in Oregon (Portland), Maine (Rockland), New Jersey (Camden), Maine (Rockland, Bucksport, Bar Harbor, Bucksport, Boothbay Harbor, Bath), Massachusetts (Gloucester), Rhode Island (Newport), Massachusetts (Oak Bluffs/Martha's Vineyard Island, Provincetown).
  • 10-night "Grand New England Cruise" that visits only ports in Massachusetts (Gloucester, Plymouth, Cape Cod Canal, Martha's Vineyard Island, Falmouth, New Bedford, Provincetown).

Port's cruising industry supports 8000+ state jobs and generates ~USD 480 million (annual income). In 2012, the Port handled 117 cruise ship calls (9% increase over 2011) and ~274,000 passengers (plus 100,000+ crew). Of all itineraries, 63 were roundtrips by Boston-homeported liners. In 2013, it handled 116 calls and 382,885 passengers, with economic impact ~USD 50 million (USD 0,94 million in state taxes). In 2014 were handled 113 ship calls, in 2015 - 115 ship calls and nearly 300,000 tourists.

Following the 2-year cruise shipping pause due to the COVID crisis, for season 2022 Flynn Cruiseport Boston handled 128 ship calls (berthings booked by 19 different lines/companies), of which 12 were maiden port calls (first-time visiting vessels) and 310,767 passengers. The homeported vessels were 5 (Norwegian Pearl, MS Zaandam, MS Nieuw Statendam, Celebrity Summit, Voyager of the Seas, Enchanted Princess, Sky Princess, Carnival Legend). Prior to the global pandemic (season 2019/record year), the Port handled 138 ship calls and 402,346 tourists.

On January 16-17, 2022, at Conley Container Terminal docked the Port's largest container ship (so far) - Ever Fortune (2020-built, IMO 9850563, cargo capacity 12000 TEU-containers, owned by EVERGREEN Marine ). The call followed the completion of a USD 850 million project that included Conley Terminal's modernization and expansion, Boston Harbor's dredging/deepening, adding 3x large STS gantry cranes (ship-to-shore), and a new berth. Currently, Conley Terminal can handle large boxships (with max capacity 14000 TEUs) and is New England’s only full-service container terminal that serves 2500+ local traders (importers/exporters).

In 2023, MASSPORT received 149 cruise calls (~16% increase over 2022), of which 58 homeporting and 91 transiting. Flynn Cruiseport Boston reported a 20% increase in cruise passenger numbers (~373000).

For season 2024 (May-November), Flynn Cruiseport reported a total of 169 booked berthings (15% increase over 2023) made by 24 different cruise companies. Of those, 90x were from transiting vessels, 13x maiden visits, 8x homeporting vessels (6x different companies), 16x 3-ship days.

  • Ships repositioning to the Caribbean depart from Boston and dock in turnaround USA ports in Florida ( Fort Lauderdale ) or Louisiana ( New Orleans ).
  • Ship relocation voyages (RepositionCruises.com) - Transatlantic crossings between USA and Europe often visit ports in the UK (including British Isles), Iceland, Greenland, Canada-New England, or Bermuda, combined with Southern European ports (Portugal's Azores, Spain's Canaries, Mediterranean).

Today, 100+ voyages start here each year. The most popular destinations are Europe, Bermuda, throughout the USA East Coast (Eastern Seaboard). Boston port's cruise terminals welcome 250,000+ tourists per year.

Boston cruise terminal

Boston cruise port terminal is called Black Falcon Cruise Terminal. Boston has a great geographical location and a deepwater harbor, which has made it a commercial port since the early-17th-century.

Black Falcon cruise terminal

Boston’s Black Falcon terminal is located in South Boston Waterfront, 2 mi / 3 km away from Boston downtown. The terminal is named after a 440-ft / 134 m long Norwegian merchant ship Black Falcon which caught fire on Nov 2, 1953. At the time, the terminal was a US Army Base. The building is large, converted to a terminal in 1986. The 2010 refurbishment doubled the terminal's capacity by simultaneous handling embarking/disembarking passengers.

In November 2021, at the Terminal was installed a new PBB/passenger boarding bridge (enclosed passageway extending from the terminal gate to the cruise liner). Since 2017, Boston Harbor is annually dredged (by the US Army Corps of Engineers), thus deepening the Reserved Channel (depth 8 m / 27 ft, width 305 m / 1000 ft, length ~4,8 km / 3 mi) and expanding the Turning/Swinging Basin (radius 526 m / 1725 ft).

  • address: "1 Black Falcon Ave, Boston, MA 02210, United States"
  • location - 10 min drive distance from BOS (Boston Logan International Airport, via Ted Williams Tunnel), and 3 mi / 5 km (within 15 min drive distance) from Boston’s Back Bay shopping areas.
  • GPS coordinates - 42°20'35.0"N+71°02'01.1"W
  • phone number +1 617-330-1500
  • Parking: indoor parking garage with 5 levels, $15.00 per day (Port Authority subject to change). There is no need of long-term parking advance reservations.

Statistics show that ~70% of all Canada and New England cruise ship tourists leaving from Boston arrive here by air. Approximately 95% of Bermuda cruise passengers or repositioning cruise ship passengers (going to the Caribbean) live in or near Boston (within a 4-hour drive).

Flynn Cruiseport Boston can be accessed from the airport, the subway, also via taxis, buses and even ferries . If you prefer walking to the facility, the distance is ~30 minutes via Northern Avenue, Boston Harborwalk (a scenic esplanade that follows Boston Harbor's shoreline/beaches, piers, wharves) and the Old Northern Avenue Bridge.

Means of transportation at the Passenger Terminal include taxis and buses, as well as the cruise line's bus shuttle service.

Repositioning Cruises from Boston

You can get on a "repositioning cruise" from Boston in the autumn each year. Cruise ships sail out of this port in the warm weather months, so for the winter they have to move to another departure port. The move is called a "repositioning cruise". See the calendar of departures below.

Repositioning cruises are usually bargains, because one-way cruises aren't as popular as round-trips. Out of Boston you can take a cruise to a warm place like California, Puerto Rico or Florida. Spend a little extra time there, then fly home.

October 11, 2024: 10-night repositioning cruise on Celebrity Cruises . One-way from Boston to Fort Lauderdale (Florida). Visit Royal Naval Dockyard (Bermuda), Willemstad (Curacao), Oranjestad (Aruba) and Kralendijk (Bonaire).

November 9, 2024: 14-night repositioning cruise on Holland America Line . One-way from Boston to Fort Lauderdale (Florida). Visit Bermuda, St Thomas, St Maarten, St Lucia, Barbados, Curacao and Half Moon Cay (Bahamas).

October 10, 2025: 10-night repositioning cruise on Celebrity Cruises . One-way from Boston to Fort Lauderdale (Florida). Visit Willemstad (Curacao), Kralendijk (Bonaire) and Oranjestad (Aruba).

October 18, 2025: 14-night repositioning cruise on Holland America Line . One-way from Boston to Miami (Florida). Visit Puerto Rico, St Thomas, St Maarten, St Lucia, Barbados, Curacao and Half Moon Cay.

October 27, 2025: 16-night repositioning cruise on Oceania . One-way from Boston to Miami (Florida). Visit Newport (Rhode Island), Hamilton (Bermuda), St George (Bermuda), Gustavia (St Barts), St John's (Antigua), Castries (St Lucia), Bridgetown (Barbados), St George's (Grenada), Kralendijk (Bonaire) and Oranjestad (Aruba).

November 2, 2025: 7-night repositioning cruise on Royal Caribbean . One-way from Boston to San Juan (Puerto Rico). Visit Royal Naval Dockyard (Bermuda), St John's (Antigua) and Tortola (British Virgin Islands).

Karen Read Murder Trial: Why Boston Woman Says She Was Framed for Hitting Boyfriend With Car

Karen read, who is accused in the 2022 killing of her boyfriend boston police officer john o’keefe, has alleged local and state police are framing her for his death..

A Massachusetts woman is maintaining her innocence as she stands accused in the death of her police officer boyfriend.

Karen Read , whose trial for the 2022 murder of Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe has captivated the nation, has alleged local and state law enforcement officials have framed her and let the real killer go.

Early in the morning of January 29, 2022, O'Keefe's body was found in a snowbank outside the Canton, Mass., home of Boston Police detective Brian Albert , where he, Read and others had been at a gathering. At the time, Read told authorities, per May 2023 court filings obtained by E! News, that she dropped off O'Keefe at the party before leaving.

She also said that when he still hadn't returned at 5 a.m. the following morning and she couldn't reach him, she said she and friends Jennifer McCabe , Albert's sister-in-law, and Kerry Roberts went looking for him and found him in the snow outside Albert's home. O'Keefe was pronounced dead later that morning at Good Samaritan Hospital in Boston.

However, just days later, on Feb. 1, prosecutors arrested Read on charges of second-degree murder, manslaughter, motor vehicle homicide and leaving the scene of a deadly crash, NBC Boston reported from the courthouse. Citing results from the Massachusetts State Police Crime Laboratory stating Read's BAC was between .13 percent and .29 percent, they alleged that an intoxicated Read struck O'Keefe after having an argument before driving away, leaving him for dead.

Read pleaded not guilty to the charges. Her defense has instead alleged that Read is being framed to cover up for an incident that took place at the home of a prominent law enforcement officer.

"Karen Read was framed," her defense attorney David Yannetti told the jury during opening statements April 29. "Her car never struck John O'Keefe. She did not cause his death and that means somebody else did. You will learn that it was no accident that John O'Keefe was found dead on the front lawn of 34 Fairview Road on Jan. 29."

"You will learn that at that address, lived a well-known and well-connected law enforcement family in Canton—the Alberts," Yannetti, who argued that O'Keefe's injuries were not consistent with a vehicle collision but rather a beating, continued. "Because the Alberts were involved, and because they had close connections to the investigators in this case, Karen Read was framed for a murder she did not commit."

For proof of the Albert family's influence in the local area, Yannetti pointed to Brian Alberts' brother Kevin , a detective in the Canton Police Department. Due to his position in the police department, the case was handed to the Massachusetts State Police. But Yannetti claims the O'Keefe's murder case was purposely mishandled as the lead state trooper Michael Proctor in the investigation is a close family-friend to the Alberts, whose home O'Keefe was found outside of.

Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Adam Lally steered the focus on Read, telling the jury they would be hearing what she had told first responders who arrived on the scene following the 911 calls.

"The defendant, Karen Read, is guilty of murder in the second degree," Lally said in his opening remarks, "striking the victim, Mr. O'Keefe, with her car, knocking him back onto the ground, striking his head on the ground, causing the bleeding in his brain and swelling, and then leaving him there for several hours in a blizzard."

E! News has reached out to the Canton Police Department, Massachusetts State Police, the family of Brian and Kevin Albert, as well as Michael Proctor but has not heard back.

(NBC Boston and E! are part of the NBCUniversal family.)

"Hit Man" star Glen Powell reflects on "pretty surreal" career after 15-year journey in Hollywood

By Jennifer Earl

Updated on: June 7, 2024 / 9:23 AM EDT / CBS News

At the beginning of his acting career, Glen Powell recalled a casting director's offhand comment that he would be lucky to "play a dead body" on CSI. That remark stuck with Powell who said he struggled in Los Angeles for over a decade trying to land acting jobs.

Despite facing some hurdles along the way, Powell said there was never a point where he considered giving up.

"There was a point where I realized that acting is not a meritocracy. And just because you exist on a longer timeline doesn't mean it's going to work out. Right? There's a lot of other bigger forces at play," Powell told "CBS Mornings" co-anchor Gayle King during an interview in his hometown of Austin, Texas.

He added, "The fact that all of those sort of detours along the way about learning how to sort of develop and raise money and write – all these things are now kind of leading me to a place where all of those weapons are at my disposal"

"Pretty surreal"

Powell's since gone on to create box office magic – from starring alongside Tom Cruise in "Top Gun: Maverick" to playing Syndey Sweeney's love interest in the romantic comedy "Anyone but You" and beyond. Later this summer, he'll be in Steven Spielberg's film "Twisters."

He said his career – and life – took a turn in what seemed like the span of a few months. People started to recognize him after his role as cocky pilot Lt. Jake "Hangman" Seresin in the 2022 hit "Top Gun: Maverick."

"You sometimes…get a double take or whatever. But now, it's definitely been an interesting change in terms of my privacy and my personal life," he told King.

But he said the biggest change is getting calls from filmmakers he's dreamed about working with – like Spielberg.

"That part has been pretty surreal," he said. "You sort of have on your vision board…you know, that you've been dreaming about…that you're just massive fans. And now they're my friends – and potential colleagues. It's like, it's pretty crazy."

Co-writing "Hit Man"

One person who's always been in his corner is Oscar-nominated film director Richard Linklater who he's worked with for nearly two decades. The pair teamed up to co-write the film "Hit Man," inspired by a true story Powell read about in Texas Monthly about a man posing as a hired assassin.

The film centers around Gary Johnson, a psychology professor who built audio-visual equipment for the police department in sting operations and moonlights as a fake hit man. The film takes unexpected twists and turns when Johnson falls for a client.

"I'm not going to give away the ending. But I did find myself being surprised at myself that I'm rooting for things that go against everything I believe in," King told Powell.

"That's the magic trick of this… We always conceptualize this as the beginning of a beautiful family, the beginning of a beautiful love story – you have to go on that ride 'cause if you really believe in love, sometimes love takes really unexpected, weird turns," replied Powell.

Meeting Powell's parents

Powell's parents, Cyndy and Glen Sr., told King they knew their son had something special at a young age.

Cyndy remembers his kindergarten teacher describing him at a parent-teacher conference, saying, "I've taught 30 years and I've never seen somebody have the presence this kid has."

She said, 'He's either going be an actor or president," Cyndy recalled.

The pair have enjoyed following Powell's career journey through the years.

"We all read lines with him," Glen Sr. added.

Powell said his mom and two sisters, in particular, are always quick to give him feedback.

"I don't think the truth is avoidable. I think I have, I grew up around very, very strong women who, who are not afraid to speak their mind, I think is the healthiest thing, as a guy to grow up with, really strong women running the family, you know," Powell said.

No matter what, Powell said he's comforted to have a family who will stick by his side.

"You don't ever know how far this journey's going to take you, but I knew that they were going to be with me, win or lose. And that's been amazing because right now we're getting to win," he said.

MLS and its weird history of raccoons: On the field, in the press box and ruining merchandise

There’s a line in nearly every job posting you see these days, a catch-all for employers looking to extract maximum value from their employees: “O ther duties as assigned.”

To those of us who are tethered to desks and chairs, the term doesn’t mean much. To Mark Mello and Ryan Haines — members of the Philadelphia Union ’s grounds crew — “other duties as assigned” can sometimes feel like their entire professional existence.

“When you have a job such as ours,” says Mello, with just a hint of exasperation, “’anything and everything’ is in your job description.”

Yet nothing could’ve prepared the two for the “other duty” they would be called upon to perform a few weeks ago during the Union’s match against New York City FC.

About 20 minutes into the first half, the referee blew play dead as a pitch invader made their way over the ad boards and onto the playing surface. This was not your run-of-the-mill interloper, an overzealous fan seeking a selfie or an autograph. With a mask over its eyes and trotting at a leisurely gate, this invader felt distinctly more… mischievous.

Ah, the common raccoon. ‘Procyon lotor’ to the science crowd, ‘trash panda’ to the rest of us. Racoons, once wild creatures, have become ubiquitous in urban landscapes, occasionally wreaking havoc as they root through dumpsters, trash bins and the like. And at Subaru Park — the Union’s home, south of Philly in nearby Chester, Pennsylvania — they’ve made themselves right at home.

“We’re very lucky to be on the banks of the beautiful Delaware River,” says Mello. “We have deer, we have eagles, foxes and groundhogs here around the stadium. We just coexist, that’s our thing. We have plenty of grass for them to munch on outside the stadium. It’s just a fluke one of them made it inside. Maybe they smelled some of the delicious concession food.”

Nobody is sure where this raccoon lived or how it made its way onto the pitch, but the stadium was sent into an absolute frenzy when fans realized what was happening. Players and coaches steered clear of the animal as it cut a path across midfield and streaked towards Philadelphia’s goal. Play-by-play announcer Calum Williams offered an assurance to those tuned in on Apple TV: “We promise you that you are not watching the nature channel right now. We’re told that pest control is on the way to remove a rather adventurous raccoon from the field.”

RACCOON ON THE FIELD!!! MIDWEEK @MLS AT ITS FINEST pic.twitter.com/tO8AJUrkJw — Andrew Wiebe (@andrew_wiebe) May 16, 2024

Pest control, it turns out, was not on the way — not in any qualified sense, at least. The experts who handled this situation were Mello and Haines, along with nearly every other member of the Union’s ops crew.

“I don’t have nets or anything like that,” says Mello. “So I looked into the stands for anything we could use. I sent somebody over the railing and into the stands to grab a trash can. Our boss John grabbed the other trash can from our shop. It’s what we had. We didn’t know what we were doing. We didn’t know how long it would go on. Our job is just to help make sure the game gets played.”

The raccoon had traversed the length of the field by the time it intersected with Mello, who was now in a full sprint toward it. Mello looked understandably out of steam as he made his best attempt to trap it.

“I was gassed,” he says. “I ran from the visitor’s bench to the other side and I was just… done. I had to get someone else to carry the trash can because I was simply not built for speed.”

Racoons aren’t, either. But what they lack in pace, they make up for in a form of chaotic resourcefulness that’s made them one of North America’s most adaptable animals.

“Raccoons are a generalist species,” says Laura Dudley Plimpton, a PhD student at Columbia who has spent years researching raccoons and other wildlife that have gained a foothold in urban landscapes. “They are amazing at using an anthropogenic (human-inhabited) area, using the resources in it and populating it beyond what that place can often sustain. That’s why you see really large, often high-density populations of racoons in these urban landscapes — like stadiums.”

Eager to evade capture, the raccoon — who league broadcasters went on to affectionately dub “Raquinho” — continued its lap around the playing surface. By now, the interloper had lost a step and, after a few unsuccessful tries, Union ops personnel finally trapped it between two trash cans. And just like that — after an industrious, crafty four-minute shift on the pitch — they whisked Raquinho away.

cruises leaving boston 2022

Which is where things probably would’ve ended years ago. But in the modern era, when highlights are clipped and instantly shared on social media, the incident began to draw interest. Significant interest, the kind MLS sometimes struggles to generate with their actual product.

Raquinho, along with the Union employees who wrangled him, became a bit of a sensation. By the time comedian Stephen Colbert shared the clip during his monologue on The Late Show, the little raccoon had firmly ingrained itself in the weird, wild history of MLS.

“I came to grow grass at a high level for professional sports,” says Mello, who feels more than a little uncomfortable with all the attention he received. “People aren’t talking about the grass, they’re talking about what’s on the grass. No matter how you spin it, it’s good for our team.

“And we’re putting a product out there, too, that can host such a fine animal.”

As for what happened to Raquinho? A Union spokesperson says the animal was turned over to the team’s corporate pest control sponsor and released “off campus”.

“Rest assured,” said the Union, “our new friend was released unharmed.”

Raquinho might be MLS’ newest raccoon, but he may not be its most famous.

By the time D.C. United moved into RFK Stadium in 1996, the venue was already an aging, concrete goliath, primitive even by MLS standards. United, though, made the most of the place, filling it with some of MLS’ most dedicated fans and winning a mess of trophies in the club’s early days.

Even when it was open, RFK was a bit of a wildlife sanctuary. There were the run-of-the-mill city dwellers — mice, rats, cockroaches — but there were also stranger residents. The stadium, which sits on the banks of the Anacostia River, had become a bit of an avian sanctuary, with herons, ospreys and kingfishers circling overhead. Occasionally, fans would arrive to find a dead fish in their seat, dropped from the talons of a bird above.

In general, RFK was one giant circle of life. The rats ate the cockroaches, the birds of prey ate the rats and D.C. United’s fanbase took it all with a grain of salt. Until the raccoons came and set up shop. They were in it for the long haul.

>Nathan Fry remembers all of this well. As United’s director of merchandising, Fry oversaw the team store, an aging, decrepit space on the stadium’s west side. The store had a drop ceiling, one of those charmless, foamboard grids that curse a ton of American office spaces, and one day Fry noticed something a little concerning: several of those tiles were badly discolored.

Fry didn’t think much of it at first, assuming it was a run-of-the-mill water leak — the entire stadium, at that point, had become one giant water leak. Slowly, though, he grew suspicious.

United’s front-office staff began to speculate. Fry and several associates thought it might be “caramel, or some other restaurant thing” leaking from the Capital View Club, a disused space directly above the team store.

Eventually, Fry got a broomstick and very tepidly pushed the access panel aside, hoping to get a better look. Before he could even stick his head into the void, though, a fully-grown raccoon leaned through the opening to get a better look at the landscape below. The old bandit locked eyes with Fry. And quickly, something else became apparent: this raccoon was not alone. There were maybe a half dozen other critters living in the ceiling.

“That,” says Fry, “is when we realized that what was leaking out of the ceiling and onto our stock was urine. It was raccoon urine.”

These raccoons were newer residents, but those who worked at the stadium had a long history with them. Longtime D.C. United president Kevin Payne, who founded the club and passed away in 2022, would frequently come across them and sometimes hear them in the walls of his office. Payne, and others at the club, recalled arriving at work one day to find a stray cat tangled up in one of the goals on the stadium’s playing field. The cat survived — losing a paw in the process — and was eventually adopted by a stadium employee who named it (what else) RFK.

The cats probably only helped control another wildlife problem at RFK. A whiteboard across the hallway of Payne’s office was full of tally marks — they represented the number of mice and rats the staff had managed to kill. By the time 2010 rolled around, Payne, who was long the primary driver of United’s efforts to leave RFK altogether, was ready to surrender to the wildlife.

“We spent more money trapping animals sometimes than we did on a lot of other stuff,” Payne told The Athletic in 2022. “I would see raccoons everywhere. I remember just really being ready to find a new facility and let them have the run of the place.”

Fry, though, couldn’t afford to do so. He started by discarding products in the team store which had been ruined by the urine. Fry recalls Judah Cooks, a former United player who had become a coach in the club’s academy system, attempting to pry the product from his hands. Times were lean at D.C. United.

“Despite his best efforts,” Fry says, “he was not allowed to have those jackets.”

As for wrangling the raccoons themselves, this was above the pay grade of any mid-level employee at an MLS club, so Fry, along with D.C. United’s CEO at the time, Mike Williamson, called in some professionals. They rounded up the raccoon, along with its family, which included a couple of babies, Fry remembers. They popped the access panel back on and just like that, RFK had five fewer residents.

Just hours after they were captured, Williamson — who most recently became the CEO of Welsh side Wrexham — was at his home, which backed up to Rock Creek Park, a huge, sprawling expanse of nature in Northwest D.C. Peering out his back window, he spotted a van belonging to the animal control company he had called only hours earlier. They were releasing a family of five into the woods.

“We couldn’t really escape them,” says Fry.

The legend of the RFK raccoons has persisted and D.C.’s fanbase embraced the raccoons as being emblematic of the state of the club as a whole. United, at that point, were MLS’ trash pandas, scavenging through the garbage in search of scraps.

D.C.’s fans even created a bit of an unofficial mascot out, dubbing him ‘Ronnie Raccoon’. One supporter made Boy-Scout-style pins bearing Ronnie’s likeness. “RFK Nature Club,” they read. In 2022, a few years after United left RFK for Audi Field, the club announced that it would be making Ronnie its secondary mascot.

Audi field, which sits on a plot of land not far from where the Anacostia and Potomac Rivers converge, has its own collection of wildlife. Many of the same birds that patrolled the skies over RFK cruise right over the club’s new home, plucking fish out of the river. Occasionally, fans will still find a fish waiting for them in their seat. And in spirit, Ronnie lives on, serving alongside Talon, the club’s long-time mascot.

Real Salt Lake’s home stadium, America First Park, is among the most scenic venues in MLS. Tucked into the Wasatch Front, snow-capped peaks and red-faced mountains provide a spectacular backdrop. And like any other place where untouched nature and humans meet, there are bound to be some unexpected encounters. Such was the case in 2022 when a young raccoon made itself at home in the stadium’s press box.

RSL had already had its own viral wildlife moment. In 2019, a stray cat made its way onto the pitch at America First during stoppage time of RSL’s Leagues Cup Showcase match against Liga MX side Tigres. The hard-charging feline came within inches of the ball at the near sideline during a promising Tigres attack. RSL head coach Mike Petke wanted play stopped, but the match referee allowed it to continue.

Moments later, Petke unleashed a tirade on that same referee, eventually leading to his dismissal as the club’s head coach. In a very short shift, the feline had put in a few touches and ended the managerial career of an MLS head coach.

RSL’s raccoon still managed to cause his own share of chaos. Real Salt Lake director of communications Trey Fitz-Gerald remembers it well.

“There are things in the building that you don’t always know about,” he says. “Feral animals.”

RSL’s Leagues Cup match against Leon was delayed by a torrential downpour, which had made the field unplayable. Fans had fled to the concourse in search of shelter. Up in the press box, a juvenile raccoon had done the same, working its way into the drop ceiling. All of a sudden, it came crashing down.

“It landed on a countertop where we typically have food, game notes and other stuff for media members,” says Fitz-Gerald, who remembers media members “hooting and hollering” as the raccoon ran up and down the table.

“My immediate reaction to this is like, ‘What the f***?’,” says Fitz-Gerald. “This building is too young to have an RFK situation. I texted our ops crew. I said, ‘We just had a raccoon fall through the roof in the press box, somebody please deal with this’.”

Cold and wet, the raccoon made a move toward the warmth of the popcorn machine on the table. Then it searched for shelter behind a photocopier. The media stood by in shock. In a video, you can hear an RSL staffer imploring those in attendance to “OPEN A DAMN DOOR, PLEASE.”

The raccoon, only months old, eventually bolted out of the press box and onto a third-level walkway. A huge throng of fans had already taken up shelter from the rain on the concourse below and were treated to drama unfolding above them: a couple of RSL operations staff hopelessly trying to wrangle the interloper with a broom and a trash can.

Finally backed into a corner, the raccoon scurried over a railing. At this point, facing near-certain capture, the raccoon cast its eyes on the concourse below. Like Richard Kimball in The Fugitive, he took a leap of faith, plunging some 20 feet onto the concourse.

Fans shrieked in horror and glee. Some gave chase. Eventually, RSL’s ops staff managed to trap the raccoon in a cardboard trash can. Quickly, they whisked it away. The entire scene lasted about 10 minutes, and it would be the most exciting thing anyone would see that night — moments later, the match was postponed.

“If you go a quarter-mile or a third of a mile straight west of our stadium, there is a canal that is part of the Jordan River ecosystem in Utah and that’s where they released the raccoon,” says Fitz-Gerald. “Caleb Turner, who is our beat writer for KSL, he’s leaving the game later that night when we finally canceled it and he sees this family of raccoons down (by where media park), which is close to that riverbed. We’re fairly sure that raccoon was reunited with his family.”

Another happy ending for an MLS raccoon, another animal cemented into MLS lore. None of this is surprising to Plimpton, who has spent years studying the habits of these resourceful creatures.

“Raccoons are notorious for being mischievous,” she says. “That’s one of the reasons they’re so successful. They know how to exploit whatever is around them.

“I had raccoons GPS collared for a while. I tried it on other medium-sized mammals and every one of them handled it great. Raccoons? They tore them off in a day. And traits like that are just inherent in their personality.”
