Pretoria National Botanical Garden

The Pretoria National Botanical Gardens is one of the nine spectacular gardens South Africa has to offer. It spans over 76 hectares of land divided into two bio-domes.

The city is rich in history, offering a buffet of diverse cultures and stories of how they integrated after Mandela became president in 1994.

Travelling in Pretoria

Pretoria might be a small city but it has many transportation networks to help you get around. Transport can be quite pricey while travelling which is why locals suggest public transportation.

It is an 80km rapid transit system that runs throughout the entire province of Gauteng. It makes traveling from city to city simple, fast and cost efficient.

There are two Gautrain stations in Pretoria: Pretoria Station and Hatfield Station. The Gautrain station is shared with Metrorail in Pretoria CBD during peak morning hours.

The Gautrain is connected to other forms of public transport like taxis, buses and the Metrorail public train system. These services are fully integrated and may be used separately or jointly by transferring from one to another.

The Gautrain bus services operate from 5:30 - 20:30 on work days. Bus tickets are reduced when you use the bus within 20 minutes of using the train, helping users to make green choices that have less impact on the environment as Pretoria is a hub for conservationists.

Fewer tourists means more space to explore, and more chances to feel a part of South African everyday life. The city is still largely Afrikaans and you’ll hear plenty of the language being spoken around town (though you’re unlikely to meet a person in Pretoria who doesn’t speak English). As in all South African destinations, visitors must err on the side of caution, but generally this is a laid-back city that feels like a sprawling home town, and its attractions are accordingly eclectic.

1.  Kruger House

What is it? The one-time home of every Afrikaaner’s favourite president, Paul Kruger, who rose to popularity by leading the Transvaal War against Britain.

Why go? Soak up some ZAR history in the surrounds of a surprisingly modest late-nineteenth-century house that’s brimming with period trinkets.

2.  The Union Buildings

What is it? The official seat of the South African government is an enormous, Acropolis-inspired building that watches over the city from its highest point. Its terraced grounds are planted only with native species.

Why go? At its inception just over a century ago this was the largest building in South Africa, and it remains a magnificent sight. Wander the lovely gardens and take a picture with the nine-metre tall statue of Mandela.

3.  Hapo at Freedom Park

What is it? A museum that tells South African history in its entirety, all the way back to the beginnings of humankind. It’s just one part of Freedom Park, a beautifully designed complex of gardens and memorials that celebrates human dignity.

Why go? A little bit of learning, some space to think, superb views, a decent gift shop… All in a complex that strongly resembles a giant skate park.

4.  Hazel Food Market

What is it? In a province that has a wealth of local produce it’s a bit weird that Pretoria’s restaurant scene is undeniably flat. But there’s great food to be had at its many regular food markets. Hazel Food Market (Saturdays, Menlo Park) is the favourite with people who have ‘foodie’ in their social media handle.

Why go? There’s a market for every taste in this town; if Hazel’s not your scene try the Deep Roots night market for stand-up comedy and beer pong, the Boeremark for traditional South African goods or the monthly Banting Market, devoted to free-from and health foods.

5.  Pretoria Zoo

What is it? Officially known as the National Zoological Garden, this 210-acre zoo will more than scratch your animal-watching itch if your trip doesn’t allow for a safari park (or if you just can’t get enough of the Big Five).

Why go? You’re guaranteed sightings of endangered animals such as black rhinos, gorillas and pygmy hippos. You can also book to visit after dark on a Night Safari, on which your guided walking tour is followed by a braai in the moonlight.

6.  Jacaranda City

What is it? Just as Londoners are plagued by #wisteriahysteria each May, South African Instagram accounts are flooded by a different purple bloom. Each September/October majestic Jacaranda trees become laden with mauve blossoms.

Why go? Pretoria is so transformed at this time of year that one of its nicknames is ‘Jacaranda City’. The petals eventually coat the roads so that they end up purple, too.

7.  Loftus Versfeld Stadium

What is it? The Northern Transvaal’s mighty(ish) Rugby Union team the Blue Bulls is the home team at this 51,000 seat stadium that also hosts international sporting tournaments, and even the occasional popstar (Celine Dion!).

Why go? Get involved with South Africa’s hearty enthusiasm for sport at this impressive venue which had a decent refurb for the 2010 World Cup. Or take a picnic and watch on the big screen outside.

8.  Afroboer

What is it? This immensely popular neighbourhood restaurant in Pretoria’s eastern suburbs celebrates every aspect of African culture in both its outlook and its menu.

Why go? Spending an entire morning nattering is a classic Pretoria pastime and this is exactly the place to do it. Grab a mushroom shakalaka and boerewors sandwich in the pretty back garden and settle in for some serious eavesdropping.

9.  Zeppelin Craft Brewery

What is it? Like Thorpe Park for beer nerds, this loosely World War Two-themed bar serves around 80 different brews, many of which are from the excellent on-site brewery.

Why go? Ice cold beers taste even better when you’re sitting on a leafy outdoor terrace. If for some mad reason you’re visiting South Africa when it’s cold, head down to the open fire in the Bunker Bar.

10.  Tswaing Meteorite Crater

What is it? Around 200,000 years ago a massive rock smashed into the Earth around 25 miles northwest of what is now Pretoria. It made a ring of ‘hills’ 1000 metres wide and a dent that’s now a spookily circular saltwater lake.

Why go? Stretch your legs for a couple of hours while surrounded by birds, butterflies and native plants. Make sure to take water and snacks. And a GoPro to record your re-enactments of Jurassic Park.

11.  Dinokeng Reserve

What is it? Opened less than a decade ago, this game reserve can offer you a taste of safari even if you’re on a seriously limited schedule; it’s less than 30 miles from the airport. It offers a chance to see the Big Five (buffalo, cheetah, elephants, rhinos and lions) and there are lodges to book if you want to stay longer.

Why go? On a short visit (especially a self-drive rather than one with a ranger) you’re fairly unlikely to see big cats, but in all honesty, giraffe are way more entertaining and you can’t help but see them. They’re nature’s flagpoles.

12.  Fermier

What is it? A farm-to-table restaurant with ambitions to become completely self-sustained. Leith’s-trained chef Adriaan Maree leads a team who produce delicious food to a world-class standard despite their premises being largely made of earth and wood.

Why go? An interesting, expertly made nine-course tasting menu with wine pairing will set you back around £50 a head. The only downside is you may need a torch to find the door.

13.  Grounded

What is it? Well-meaning café Grounded offers more than just massive sandwiches and excellent coffee. Each Saturday morning they host a free, one-hour introductory lesson in the Zulu language.

Why go? South Africa has 11 national languages; 20% of Gauteng’s residents speak Zulu at home. Try out any words that stick and you’re sure to raise a smile.

In the fertile valley of the Apies River, at the foot of the Magaliesberg range, Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City, thanks to the blaze of purple blooms that brighten its many parks and gardens in the spring. Pretoria is also the administrative capital of South Africa , sharing capital city status with Cape Town and Bloemfontein . The city lies about 55 kilometers from Johannesburg , yet the two cities seem a world apart.

Pretoria is a city of civil servants, diplomats, and trim and tidy residential districts with a large population of Afrikaners. It is also an important industrial town and an educational and cultural hub. The University of Pretoria was founded in 1930, and UNISA, the University of South Africa, is one of the largest open universities in the world.

The Pretoria National Botanic Garden, in the city's eastern suburbs, is a peaceful oasis close to the city. The 76-hectare gardens spotlight South African species, with more than half the country's tree species, as well as many flowering plants, cycads, aloes, and other impressive collections. A quartzite ridge slices the park into two sections, with vegetation in the warmer north-facing half contrasting with that in the colder south-facing section.

The plants are grouped according to their climatic region, such as the savannas of the Karoo, coastal forests, and the grassland plains of Namibia. Paved nature trails lead through the natural vegetation of the rocky ridge above the garden. Also on the grounds, the National Herbarium is home to the largest collection of plant specimens in South Africa, with more than a million species catalogued and stored here. After exploring the lovely gardens, visitors can enjoy a meal at the lakefront restaurant.

High on a hilltop south of the city center, the Voortrekker Monument is a South African National Heritage site and one of the country's most visited historic monuments. It was built in 1949 to commemorate the Voortrekkers, the Boers who pushed northward into unknown territory in the mid 19th-century.

This 40-meter-high square granite structure is a prominent landmark in the city with steps leading up to the Hall of Heroes, where 27 marble reliefs depict the Great Trek of 1838. Surrounding the monument is a wall depicting ox-wagons representing the trek wagons. On 16 December each year, a shaft of sunlight shines through an opening in the dome and illuminates a cenotaph below, which reads. "Ons vir jou, Suid-Afrika" ("We are for you, South Africa").

Occasionally, the hall hosts classical music performances, which highlight its excellent acoustics. Museum exhibits depict snapshots of life during this important period. After browsing the interior, visitors can admire panoramic views of Pretoria from the roof or enjoy a meal at the restaurant.

Spanning 85 hectares, the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa provides a full day of animal fun for the family. This large zoo encompasses a walk-through aviary, a reptile house with a collection of animals from all over the world, as well as the country's only inland aquarium where visitors can see many species of fish including ragged tooth sharks.

A haven for hikers and nature lovers, Moreleta Kloof Nature Reserve spans 100 hectares in the foothills of Moreleta Kloof near the city center. Springbok, impala, bushbuck, zebra, and ostrich are among the wildlife found in the park, as well as an abundance of birds. A tributary flows through the reserve providing water for the animals, and hiking trails range in length from 1.5 kilometers to more than three kilometers.

Other lovely green spaces close to the city center include Faerie Glen Nature Reserve , part of the Moreleta Spruit Nature Trail, which follows a winding course along the banks of a stream through ever-changing scenery, as well as Groenkloof Nature Reserve with hiking, horseback riding, and 4WD trails. Birders will enjoy the Austin Roberts Bird Sanctuary, named after the South African ornithologist who wrote a popular handbook on the birds of South Africa. Melrose House, a National Monument, offers visitors the experience of stepping back in time to the late 19th century. Built in 1866 by wealthy businessman George J. Filled with antiques, the house is an excellent example of preserved Victorian architecture. On the outskirts of Pretoria, Rietvlei Nature Reserve offers a peaceful escape to nature and great game viewing less than a 20-minute drive from the city center. The dam was built during the Great Depression, and now constitutes 15 percent of Pretoria's water supply, as well as supporting a range of highveld game that was reintroduced to the area. Eland, red hartebeest, buffalo, blesbok, waterbuck, zebra, black wildebeest, hippo, and even cheetah are among the animals found here. Inside a modest Victorian on Church Street, the Kruger House Museum is the oldest and best known house in Pretoria. From 1883 to 1900, it was the home of Paul Kruger, President of the former Transvaal Boer Republic.

Today it has been turned into a museum with mementos and exhibits relating to his life and the politics of the time. Note the two stone lions on the verandah. They were gifted to President Kruger for his birthday in 1896 by the Northern Cape mining magnate Barney Barnato.

Begin in the garden feeding the baby lion cubs and learning interesting facts about their species. Then take a walk with the adolescent lions through the reserve. Covering an entire city block, the Pretoria Art Museum has been around since the 1930s. It was originally established to house the City Council of Pretoria's Art Collection after a large donation of 17th-century pieces from the "New Dutch" school.

Over the decades, the museum's collection has increased and now focuses mainly on South African art. The permanent collection has more than 3,000 pieces on display, including works by South African masters like Henk Pierneef, Irma Stern, and Pieter Wenning, among others. It also has a contemporary art collection with pieces by the likes of Sam Nhlengethwa, Judith Mason, and Lucas Sithole.

The museum decided to focus on South African art because Cape Town and Jo'burg already had substantial European art collections from the 17th to the 19th centuries. It hosts a permanent collection, as well as national and traveling exhibitions. These include shows by local artists, and some of the pieces are for sale.

Pretoria is also home to some excellent galleries. If landscape art is your jam, then pay a visit to the Chris Tugwell Gallery. One of South Africa's top landscape artists, Tugwell works mostly in oil, and his pieces have a subtle quality that intrigues. Located in the Brooklyn Mall Shopping Center, the gallery also features ceramics, bronzes, and sculptures from other top South African artists.
