This fall, wine country is calling — and it is only a road trip away from Chicago. Napa Valley and Sonoma County in California are typically dream destinations for wine enthusiasts at all levels, but the Midwest has its wine regions. Missouri, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Ohio have all grown table and wine grapes for generations. Common varieties like Riesling, Pinot Noir, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio, as well as French-American hybrids like Vidal, Seyval, Vignoles, and Chambourcin all thrive in the Midwest and can produce a range of sweet to dry wines. In recent years, wine production has become a sizable part of the state’s agricultural economy.
Believe it or not, the first American Viticultural Area was designated in Missouri (not California!) in June 1980. AVAs are designations to help winemakers show consumers where their wine comes from, so consumers could develop their tastes and buy wine from specific regions. Today, there are five AVAs across the Show Me State and over 130 wineries in production. The Buckeye state also has five AVAs, seven wine trails, and over 4,400 wineries that produce both grape and fruit wines.
Before Prohibition banned the production, consumption, and distribution of alcohol in 1920, Illinois was once one of the nation’s largest wine producers. Since 1997, the number of wineries has grown from 14 to over 100, including several urban wineries that can be found within the city limits.
Travelers looking for a weekend adventure that’s complete with majestic views, delicious food, and great vino, load up the car and head to one of these five Midwestern wine regions.
Shawnee Hills AVA, Southern Illinois 5-hour, 40-minute drive
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Blue Sky Vineyard (@blueskyvineyard)
Perhaps the closest wine region for Chicagoans is located in Southern Illinois, just 350 miles south of the city. The Shawnee Hills AVA , established in 2006, is home to a wine trail that consists of 11 wineries. Each winery has reservation requirements but offers flights of their signature sweet and dry wines and even some ciders. In addition to surrounding inns and cabins, there are a handful of vineyards that also have on-site suites that are perfect for small and large groups.
Wineries to visit: Alto Vineyards (Alto Pass), Blue Sky Vineyard , Kite Hill Vineyards
Places to stay: Peachbarn Winery & Cafe , Blue Sky Vineyard , Rock Lodge
August AVA, Missouri 5-hour, 50-minute drive
View this post on Instagram A post shared by AugustaWinery (@augustawinery)
As the first American Viticultural Area established, it’s only right that this area is the one to visit during a Missouri wine experience. Located just an hour south of St. Louis, these wineries also offer delicious seasonal and globally inspired cuisine in addition to their award-winning wines. While visitors can absolutely stay in a St. Louis hotel up the road, Augusta is known for its quaint bed and breakfasts.
Wineries to visit: Augusta Winery , Balducci Winery , Blumenhof Winery
Places to stay: Augusta Haus , H.S Clay House Bed & Breakfast , Lindenhof Bed & Breakfast
Wisconsin Ledge AVA, Door County Wine Trail 3-hour, 54-minute drive
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Door 44 Vineyard & Winery (@door44_winery)
Chicagoans are probably familiar with Door County as an outdoor summer destination. But they’ve got a thriving wine scene as well. The Door County Wine Trail is within the Wisconsin Ledge region and focuses on eight wineries that are on the Lake Michigan Peninsula that make fruit wine and wine from hybrid grapes such as Marquette, Marechal Foch, and Frontenac.
Wineries to visit: Stone’s Throw Winery , Simon Creek Winery , Door 44 Winery
Places to stay: The Lodge at Leathem Smith , Inn at Cedar Crossing , Black Walnut Guest House Bed & Breakfast
Leelanau Peninsula AVA, Michigan 5-hour, 10-minute drive
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Black Star Farms (@blackstarfarms)
Traverse City Wine Coast is home to over 40 wineries that specialize in a range of grape varietals. Fun fact about this region: it sits at the 45th Parallel – which is the same degree of latitude that world-class wine regions like Bordeaux, France, and Piedmont, Italy reside. While a humble brag, to say the least, this placement actually can be very helpful to ripening grapes at their best in both the Leelanau and Old Mission Peninsula AVAs. With so many options for lodging, visitors could choose to stay in Traverse City proper or explore a winery inn on one of the peninsulas.
Wineries to visit: Blackstar Farms , Rove Estate , 45 North Vineyard & Winery
Places to stay: Chateau Chantal , Hotel Indigo , Delmar Traverse City
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vinoklet Winery & Restaurant (@vinoklet)
Ohio River Valley AVA 5-hour, 25-minute drive
As one of the most dynamic wine-making regions, Ohio has seven wine regions – with the Ohio River Valley Wine Trail being the nearest to Chicago. Producing traditional wines from grape varietals like Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this region also does an excellent job making late-harvest wines that are sweeter and more succulent on the palate. To experience the entire wine trail, finding a place to stay in Cincinnati is ideal.
Wineries to visit: Hanover Winery , Vinoklet Winery, Fruitblood , Valley Vineyard
Places to stay: Hampton Inn & Suites Downtown , The Guild , The Cincinnatian Hotel

Unwind and Uncork at These 9 Wineries Where You Can Spend the Night
If winery hotels sound like your idea of a perfect vacation, the Midwest holds plenty of options, from lavish resorts to log cabins.
Samantha Lande is a Midwesterner through and through. She grew up in southeast Michigan, attended college in Ann Arbor and now lives in Chicago. Her work has appeared in many national publications including Food Network, Real Simple, Good Housekeeping and AARP.

Midwest wineries not only make memorable wine—some also offer overnight stays in accommodations that range from a single (totally charming) lodging above the tasting room to full-scale resorts with spas. Gervasi Vineyard in Ohio, Chateau Chantal in Michigan and Chaumette Winery in Missouri are just some of the places where you can be immersed in wine country from dusk to dawn. Here are nine great wineries across the Midwest to stay at overnight.
Courtesy of Gervasi Vineyard
Gervasi Vineyard Resort and Spa, Canton, Ohio
Canton, Ohio may not be the first place you think of for a winery, but the 55-acre Gervasi resort property, with a five-acre vineyard, new spa and three restaurants, will evoke the rolling hills of Tuscany, with beautiful landscaping at every turn.
Lodging includes The Casa, a boutique hotel where each room has a covered balcony; The Farmhouse, a four-bedroom restored 1830s farmhouse; and The Villas, Italian-inspired suites with fireplaces and heated travertine floors. Sip on Gervasi’s signature wines in The Cave, a tasting and barrel room. On-site restaurants offer dining both upscale and casual; another gathering spot, The Still House, specializes in cocktails, coffee and craft beer, with live music at night; and the spa (opened in 2023) provides treatments like a Warm Himalayan Salt Stone Massage. Check the resort’s events calendar for wine cave tours, concerts and more.
Courtesy of Chateau Chantal
Chateau Chantal, Traverse City, Michigan
Wake up to views of vineyards and Grand Traverse Bay at Chateau Chantal, a lovely 75-acre estate on the Old Mission Peninsula north of Traverse City. The 12 rooms at Chateau Chantal’s B&B are newly renovated; suite names reflect the colorful and luxurious designs: Van Gogh, Renoir, Degas, Monet.
Private balconies and terraces allow guests to soak up vineyard and bay views. A chef-crafted breakfast starts your morning off right; spend the day exploring more of the 10 wineries on the Old Mission Peninsula wine trail , and be sure to also visit scenic Mission Point Lighthouse at the northern tip of the peninsula. Back at the chateau, relax with a wine flight on the tasting patio, or on select days, try a six-course wine pairing dinner that includes a vineyard tour to cap your Michigan romantic getaway.
Pro Tip: On summer Thursdays, Jazz at Sunset brings piano music to the outside west patio (plus a glass of wine for each guest; make reservations online ). Also check for cooking classes, yoga retreats and other events year-round.
Black Star Farms, Suttons Bay, Michigan
In the heart of Michigan’s Leelanau Peninsula north of Traverse City (and west of the Old Mission Peninsula), vineyards and woods surround a stately columned inn on 160-acre Black Star Farms . Ten spacious rooms and suites feature luxury touches like marble fireplaces, custom tiled showers, four-poster beds and reading nooks. From your room, you might be able to see horses grazing in the pasture or look out over vineyards.
Courtesy of Black Star Farms
Room rates include a bottle of house wine upon arrival, a daily hospitality hour, a chef-prepared breakfast, and complimentary wine flights in the tasting room. More wine experiences: Take a walking tour of the vineyards, listen to live music on summer Saturdays on the tasting room patio, or try seasonal cuisine at farm-to-fork wine dinners. Inn staffers are also happy to arrange biking tours, picnics, a sailing excursion on West Grand Traverse Bay and other activities (new at the farm this year: goat yoga).
Courtesy of Chateau Grand Traverse
Chateau Grand Traverse, Traverse City, Michigan
Celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, Chateau Grand Traverse is one of the area's best-known wineries. This family-owned estate put Michigan Riesling on the map and still accounts for 75 percent of the state's Riesling production. The six-room Inn next to the winery has plenty of communal spaces for adults-only gatherings plus private balconies to enjoy panoramic views. A complimentary bottle of wine is provided on the first night, along with a glass of wine per guest at the Tasting Room each subsequent night. Take a stroll through the vineyards or partake in a private barrel-room tasting and cellar tour. A self-serve breakfast comes with your room; for other meals, head to downtown Traverse City about eight miles away for informal dining at places like The Little Fleet, a popular food truck park, or creative meals with seasonal ingredients at Modern Bird or The Cooks’ House .
Le Petit Chevalier Vineyards and Winery, Creola, Ohio
Just minutes from Hocking Hills State Park in southeast Ohio, Le Petit Chevalier has just one place to stay, The Winery Loft, and you’ll be lucky to snag a reservation. Located directly above the winery, this exposed-wood, sun-filled space is the perfect place for a wine-focused lodging. Two private balconies allow you to catch both sunrise and sunset views; outdoor seating looks over vineyards.
During daytime business hours, you can pop down to the tasting room to try a variety of sweet and drier wines, plus the popular apple wine (and on Fridays and Saturdays, fruit-flavored wine slushies). At night, this serene getaway is all yours.
Pro Tip: For lunch or a light dinner, the tasting room sells freshly prepared items such as snack flights, build-your-own-paninis and charcuterie boards. Eat on-site or take a picnic to enjoy on a Hocking Hills hike. Visit on Saturday afternoons from March to October to sample treats from local food trucks.
Courtesy Lynfred Winery
Lynfred Winery, Roselle, Illinois
Lynfred Winery , less than an hour’s drive from downtown Chicago, aims to gives its B&B guests a unique winery getaway. Each of the four bed-and-breakfast suites represents a different wine-producing country. Grapes and vines curl across the woodwork and fabric in The American Suite, which aims for a turn-of-the-century feel with Arts and Crafts pieces like Stickley furniture; the French Suite swirls you to the countryside with cheery yellow and pink fabrics, cherubs in the bathroom and French blue limestone on the hearth. (The Italian Suite and German Suite charm with themed decor, too.) Stays come with two bottles of wine, a charcuterie plate and breakfast to be enjoyed in your room or on the balcony. Head to the tasting room for a sample of Lynfred’s sweet wines, followed by a cellar tour. No vineyard is on the site; as an urban winery, Lynfred brings in almost 300 tons of grapes each year.
Kevin J. Miyazaki
The Inn at Hermannhof and Hermannhof Winery, Hermann, Missouri
Step back in history at the Inn at Hermannhof, where accommodations include six hillside stone cottages built in the 1800s as wine houses. Guests can opt for luxuriously renovated rooms upstairs, the original living quarters; or sleep on the lower level, where wine was made. Visit the Hermannhof Winery tasting room as well as the historic stone wine cellars to learn more. Hermann's original wine industry ended with Prohibition, but wine-making was revived in the 1960s and today thrives along the Hermann Wine Trail . It's easy to shape a weekend around this small town's rich wine traditions and Old World charm.
Blue Sky Vineyard, Makanda, Illinois
On the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail in southern Illinois, Blue Sky Vineyard produces wines with Chambourcin, Vignoles, Niagara and Seyval grapes, among others. It also offers two upscale suites above the winery tasting room—the Blue Sky Suite and Tuscany Romance Suite. The larger Tuscany suite comes with a balcony overlooking the wine bar as well as another balcony with views of the Shawnee Hills. In the tasting room downstairs, sip Blue Sky wines and enjoy appetizers, sandwiches, pizzas and desserts. Weekend afternoons bring live music; also, look for special events like Paint & Sip. Nearby, explore Shawnee National Forest and other outdoor attractions in southern Illinois .
Pro Tip: Other wineries on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail with lodging: Feather Hills , Peach Barn Winery and Café ; Von Jakob Winery and Brewery ; StarView Vineyards ; and Honker Hill Vineyard.
