About Myanmar Tour Packages

The complex history of Myanmar on one hand, a demography influenced by neighbours such as India, China, Bangladesh, Laos and Thailand on the other, and you have a perfect recipe for a land steeped in culture, rich in ethnicity and endowed with sights that goes from breathtakingly natural to the intricately man-made. There are several Myanmar tour packages , but only a few that do justice to its unique topography and tradition which leans heavily on its ethnic values. Whether it is Yangon (formerly Rangoon), one of its largest cities you are exploring or smaller regions like Bagan or Sagaing, the one thing you will come across is the trishaw plying down the city streets aside from horse and bullock carriage in the more rural part of the country. Encounter a tea drinking culture that is a nod to its British colonial custom, experience the local fascination for chewing betel nut, but in everything you do in Myanmar, authenticity is guaranteed.

As you plan your Myanmar trip , ensure you round up some of these sites.

The former capital of Myanmar and also its largest city, Yangon, formerly known as Rangoon is the starting point of many a holiday in this country. It is home to Myanmar’s most evocative monument, the Shwedagon Pagoda aside from a scattering of colonial-era buildings, believed to be the largest concentration in the whole of South-east Asia. You have vestiges from the Mughal era as well as from British Burma when the British had taken over Yangon in the First Anglo-Burmese War between 1824 and 1826. A landmark of Yangon you simply cannot afford to miss on your Burmese holiday.

A cultural destination of sorts, Inle Lake is known for its old-world floating villages, shrines, handicraft workshops. Located in the Shan State, Inle Lake is a freshwater lake and also among the highest at an elevation of 2900 foot.

Bagan with its more than 3000 temples spread out over its plains are a sight to behold. With its newly-awarded World Heritage status, it is swinging in the league of most important things to do in Myanmar . You have here temples that go back all the way from the 11th to the 13th centuries and are still in use after their restoration, as Bagan is among the country’s significant places of pilgrimage. It has some truly incredible sunset-viewing points and its share of crowds. But to steer clear of it, you can take a bicycle ride to explore some of its temple ruins, or even better, get the most vivid perspective aboard a hot-air balloon, an extremely popular activity with tourists to this destination of Myanmar.

Myanmar’s second largest city, after Yangon, it lies on the eastern bank of the Irrawaddy River. Founded by King Mindon in 1857, it was Burma’s last royal capital before it was annexed by the British in 1885. It was in this period that the city grew both culturally and commercially despite the growing importance of Yangon in British Burma.

Make a day trip from Mandalay to this holy site for Myanmar Buddhists, Sagaing. An erstwhile royal capital for a brief four years, Sagaing promptly made a name for itself for its spiritual pursuits and for being the centre for Buddhist traditions. Backed by low-lying hills, several of whose peaks are crowned by white and golden stupas, Sagaing makes for a visual treat. You can also visit its cave monasteries such as the Tilawkaguru, home to a stunning lineup of cave paintings in the whole of Myanmar.

Around 300 kilometre southeast of Yangon, Mawlamyine is an important seaport and the largest city in the Mon State. Being an erstwhile capital of British Burma, this beautiful port city is studded with architectural pieces from the colonial era by way of colossal churches and buildings aside from an array of hilltop temples and a bustling harbour life. There are some gorgeous tropical islands surrounding this port city and caves and villages bringing forth the flavour of the Mon culture dominant here. In this part of Myanmar you will not be jostling for space with other tourists.

About 200 kilometre northeast of Mandalay, Hsipaw in Shan State of Myanmar is a colourful town teeming with historical and cultural relics. Not just that, the city is known for its scenery, its strenuous but rewarding treks, its elaborate countryside and a site called ‘Little Bagan’. Its location on a river further lends it its uniqueness, where boat rides and stopping by at various vantage points are a norm. Besides, the train journey from Mandalay to Hsipaw is believed to be one of the world’s most beautiful, and if you get a chance to take it, do not miss it. Head to Myauk Myo to browse brick stupas and monasteries, unmissable among them are the Bamboo Buddha Monastery and Madahya Monastery made of teak. Little wonder, the place has earned itself the nickname ‘Little Bagan’. Go hiking, soak up the force of the Nam Hu Nwe waterfall, climb Sunset Hill, there is so much to do in this Burmese town.

Nearly a 5-hour drive from Mandalay, Kalaw creates the perfect Himalayan ambience for upcountry treks and stay with the local folks who are as quirky as the land. As you set out on a hike through forests, trails and fields, you will cross villages such as Pa-O, Danu and Taung Yo. There are roads connecting Kalaw with Inle Lake.

A little lake in the shape of a heart, a quick motorbike ride away from the nearby town of Rihkhawdar, is of immense spiritual importance to the Mizo folk on both side of the Myanmar-Indo border. The setting is picturesque with its blue waters, emerald fields of paddy, forest-covered hills. The Rih Lake has several ancient traditions associated with it, as per Mizo lore, it is a gateway to heaven. But to the modern day travellers it is a quaint picnic destination, what with the waters ideal for a swim and shores for lounging under a bright sun and taking in the atmospherics. Weekends are especially busy here; come on a weekday if you wish to have the entire place to yourself.

About 91 kilometre east of Yangon lies the Bago region of Myanmar known for its reclining Shwethalyaung Buddha which was rediscovered in 1881 after the destruction of Bago in the 18th century. This breathtaking statue is 180 foot long and 53 foot high and was commissioned by the Mon king, Mgadeikpa from the 10th century. You get a sense of the sheer size of the structure from the length of Buddha’s little finger alone which is 10-foot long. Over the years some improvisations have been made to restore and beautify the superstructure. Look up the murals at the rear of the statue to see how the Mon king got around to building it. Find out why the statue of Avalokiteshvara, a Mahayana Buddhist, was installed near the head of the reclining Buddha. To the north of Shwethalyaung, don’t miss the Japanese war cemetery, Kyinigan Kyaung.

Located in the southern Chin State, this is Myanmar’s third highest peak at an elevation of 10,016 foot. A part of the Nat Ma Taung National Park, it is a gorgeous mountainside of rhododendron jungles that spring up with delightful red, white, pink and yellow blossom from October to February. You can scale up Mount Victoria’s twin summits and return in a matter of two to three hours, easily accessible from the town of Kanpetlet. Though there is a severe lack of public transport in this area and you would need an experienced guide to help you navigate the trails winding up the mountain. However, Mount Victoria becomes inaccessible in the monsoon months between May and October.

Translating into the ‘Shrine of the 80,000 images’, this pagoda was built by the Rakhine kings in 1535. An extremely complex shrine with a scattering of stupas of different sizes surrounding a central stupa. This central structure is two-tiered and has thick walls and windows, and has been restored, quite hastily, over the centuries. Adjacent to the southeastern stairway of the temple is the greatly researched Shittaung Pillar, a 10-foot structure of sandstone brought in by King Minbin. Keep about a few hours at leisure to study the various features of this temple complex, its intricate reliefs, the engraved stone slab, the cave hall and other intricate features that bring in as many tourists as historians to Mrauk U.

Best time to visit Myanmar

Choose the drier and cooler months between October and March to visit Myanmar. However, you should be wary of the fact that this is in fact the peak tourist season and hence heavy crowds at most temples and shrines. Avoid visiting all areas around central Myanmar such as Mandalay and Bagan between March and May since these are the peak summer months and the day temperatures soar over 40 degree Celsius, making it extremely uncomfortable and humid for sightseeing and exploration on foot. The night temperature in the hilly areas and the highlands can be low, making the evenings relatively chilly. Pack accordingly depending on where you are travelling. The monsoon season between May and October is also decent for travelling around Burma, even the crowds are thinner.

How to reach Myanmar

There are direct flights from Kolkata to Yangon which takes about 2 hours to complete the journey. You can travel aboard IndiGo, the national carrier, Air India, or Maxair, from Kolkata’s Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport to the Yangon International Airport in Yangon, Myanmar. There are flights in the evening and at night, and the journey between the two destinations is a non-stop one. There are other airlines like Thai Airways , AirAsia , Malindo Air and China Eastern among others that come with a stopover or two before dropping you off in Yangon. The journey time can be upwards of 10 hours to 13 hours depending on the route of the airline and its layover hub.

Myanmar Tour Packages FAQs

Q. Are there direct flights from New Delhi to Yangon? A. There are no direct flights from New Delhi to Yangon, however, you can take a connecting flight from here with a stopover in Kolkata before arriving in Yangon. Though, from Kolkata you have direct flights which take approximately 2 hours to get you directly from the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport to the Yangon International Airport. Airlines operating direct flights between Kolkata and Yangon include Maxair, IndiGo and Air India . Q. What is the currency of Myanmar and where can I get it changed? A. The currency of Myanmar is called Burmese Kyat, with 1 Burmese Kyat equivalent of 0.050 Indian Rupees. It is predominantly a cash-based economy, but dollar bills get accepted at top hotels and restaurants. But you can change your money at ATMs that are spread out across the length and breadth of the country, with a withdrawal fee of K6500 and a per transaction withdrawal limit of K300,000. But in extremely remote places, these ATMs are usually out of order, so it is best for you to rely on your cash reserves. The local banks KBZ and CB are open between 09:30 am and 03:00 pm on all days except Saturdays and Sundays, and both these banks accept Visa and MasterCard and charge K6500 per transaction for your overseas card. You need to pay in cash for running your everyday errands whether it is using the trishaw, buying a meal, taxi ride, bottle of water and so forth. Q. What is the time difference between India and Myanmar? A. Myanmar is one hour ahead of India. It falls in the GMT+6:30 time zone. Q. What is the visa procedure for a holiday in Myanmar? A. While you do need a visa to travel to Myanmar, you can even do with an eVisa to visit the country. The eVisa, however, limits you to visiting destinations like Yangon, Mandalay and Nap Pyi Taw International Airports. The eVisa allows you a stay of a maximum of 28 days in Myanmar and it is valid for 90 days from the date of issue and permits only single entry in the country. Q. Which is the ballooning season in Bagan? A. It is hard to picture the gorgeous temple town of Bagan without the hot-air balloons crowding the skies. An iconic symbol of the region, any visit to Bagan is incomplete without taking in a bird’s eye view from a hot-air balloon. The season kicks off from early October and runs till mid-April, a fairly long window for you to plan your holiday accordingly in Myanmar. Choose a sunrise flight and watch the domes of the temples shrouded in mist pierce out of the wilderness. Usually you are taken quite close to the stupas to let you get a better glance at its detailing. Q. What is the dress code to visit Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon? A. Visitors need to adhere to a strict dress code at the Shwedagon Pagoda. You are not allowed to wear skirts, short pants or dresses above your knees inside. In case you are coming in from elsewhere and are not appropriately dressed, you can hire a longyi or a full-length dress for K3000 at the entrance. Q. What is the best time to visit Inle Lake in Myanmar? A. Inle Lake’s location in the higher altitude makes it a favourable spot even in the peak of summer because the average temperature hovers around 30 degree Celsius. In the cooler months of December, January and February, the night temperature can plummet to about 10 degree Celsius. In this cold season, you need to bring along a jacket or at least a layer of woollens. Q. What is a good hiking destination in Myanmar? A. Mount Victoria at an altitude of 10,016 foot above sea level, in the southern Chin State, is an ideal destination for a hike in Myanmar. The region forms a part of the Nat Ma Taung National Park and is known for its rhododendron forests that blossom between October and February and covers its slopes in shades of red, pink and white. The hike up the summit of Mount Victoria and the return journey to the nearby town of Kanpetlet takes about three hours. Make sure you take an experienced guide with you on the trek. Q. How is the internet service in Myanmar? A. Most hotels and some big restaurants have a Wi-Fi service, though not much can be said about the speed. Usually, all across the main cities of Burma, the internet can be painfully slow, while the remoter regions fall out of coverage area. Q. Is English widely spoken across Myanmar? A. Burmese is the official language of Myanmar and most widely spoken. But of foreign languages, English is the highly accepted and promoted one across its schools and tourist centres. So, you can get around in English in the major cities of Myanmar, but in the further reaches the locals speak their own dialects or indigenous languages.

A country so close and yet so unknown to us. The people of Myanmar are the star attraction of this experience. Stay on a Lake at 2000 ft, sail the Irawatti River at sunset or just have a conversation with a local which always makes you smile. Come to Myanmar to enjoy the simplicities of Life and travel back in time.

Arrival at Yangon

We will arrive at 1430 hours via Kolkata at Yangon International airport. Upon arrival will we check in to the hotel. The evening is free. Overnight at Yangon.

Yangon – Bagan (Flight)

In the morning, we will visit the Harbor Front of Yangon to enjoy the views of the Yangon River. Later we will drive on the Strand road to observe some of the Colonial Style buildings, which includes 'Bahadur Shah Zafar Tomb'. We also pass by the house of 'Aung Sang Su Kyi' and then have a local 'Yangon Lunch Experience After lunch, transfer to the domestic terminal to take a flight to Bagan at 1500 hrs. Arrive in Bagan, transfer to your hotel for check-in. Later in the evening, we will be taking a short orientation tour (If time permit) of the cultural capital of Myanmar, Bagan.

Bagan sightseeing

Today, our sightseeing tour of one of Asia’s most popular archaeological destination would include highlights such as busy Bagan’s distinctive pagodas such as Shwezigon, a prototype of later Myanmar stupas; Ananda Pagoda, one of the finest, largest and best-preserved in Old Bagan. Afterward, visit a lacquerware craft shop to see the process of hand-making beautiful artefacts. In the afternoon, drive to Taung Bi Village and see suitable monastery for alms-food offering to monks since many Buddhist monasteries are located in this village. Later we will drive to the most famous old wooden monastery, Nat Htauk Kyaung. As the sun goes down, we will be at one of the ideal viewing sites selected by our tour guide for a panoramic sunset view over the river Irrawaddy, the largest in Myanmar.

Bagan - Heho (Flight) – Kalaw (road)

Transfer to the airport to take a flight to Heho and further drive to Kalaw, which still has a feel of an old British era Hill station. Kalaw sits high on the western edge of the Shan Plateau. We will first visit the beautiful Pindaya caves with more than a thousand statues of Golden Buddha kept at various levels. Later after a leisurely lunch, we will check in our Hotel in Kalaw. The evening is free to take a walk in the still a peaceful Kalaw town where the pre-Independence Muslim and Gorkha people from British India can be seen. These people worked in railway building in the 1940’s and decided to stay back after India gained its independence.

Kalaw – Nyaung Shwe by train – Stay on Inle Lake

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the railway station to take a train to Heho. (Please note that the train is a local train and not luxury train). As the train descends from the hills, the views are beautiful but the main purpose of this journey is to see the local Burmese folks from a close distance. Arrive in Heho, drive to Nyaung Shwe, where we will keep the big bags in the Hotel and proceed to the Port with a small bag for 2 nights, to take a motorboat to the Interior of the Inle Lake. On arrival at the Hotel on the Lake, we will check in. The sunset can be enjoyed from the viewing deck.

Inle Lake sightseeing – Stay on the Lake

The morning is beautiful on the lake. Inle lake is one of the top tourist attractions in Myanmar. Our sightseeing will be by long-tailed boat to first the Innpawkhone Village where you can see lotus and silk weaving industries. Next visit Nanpan to see the traditional boat making, cheroot (Burmese cigar) making factory. We will also be able to see how people have been living in the houses built on stilts as we pass them in our boat. As we head back to our hotel, we will see the traditional fishermen going about their job with the conical fishing nets in the lake. This is an excellent photo opportunity.

Inle lake – Nyuangshwe

After a leisurely breakfast, we will visit the beautiful Indein Village on the August River, which feeds the Inle Lake. Our lunch will be overlooking the river. We will then board our boat and proceed to the town on the banks Nyuangshwe. On arrival, we will visit the local market and then check in the Hotel. The evening is best enjoyed on your own in the town, which still has an old-world feel. You can even opt to take a traditional Burmese massage.

Heho – Yangon (flight) – Fly back to India

Breakfast at the hotel. Transfer to the airport to take a flight back to Yangon. Upon arrival will visit the awe-inspiring Shwedagon Pagoda, which towers over all of Yangon. It is perhaps the most beautiful pagoda complex in all of Asia. As the sun sets the gold on the Pagoda suddenly appears to be crimson red. After visiting Pagoda, we will have dinner. Transfer to the airport to take a return flight to India.

Myanmar still remains the last country in South East Asia which is untouched by mass tourism. It is however about to change as Chinese investments pour in. Go to Myanmar now to experience an India of the 1950s.

Myanmar is both for the eyes and for the senses beyond just the vision. The stay on the Inle lake 3000 ft above MSL is the highlight of our tour, as is the famous 100 yr Kalaw mountain railway. We enjoy the sunset from the river Iravaty overlooking a 1000 pagodas.

We use three internal air journeys in Myanmar throughout our tour. As a country, Myanmar still has to get tourism in a mass scale owing to which the hotels that we choose are small, charming and well located, but also expensive.

Myanmar although Buddhist does seem to be very different than its other neighbors. One, Myanmar still feels caught in time, and two, it is not very developed, so the people are still very naive. There are Buddhist temples here too but they are much older and feel very rustic as compared to other ones in the same region.

We had done the backpacking Myanmar trip on a budget by public vehicles. But, yes a trip from India to Bangkok by road via Myanmar in your own vehicle is possible. It only requires a lot of permits and permissions to be in place. So read on to know more about the road trip.

Detailed Itinerary

If you are starting from New Delhi, we would recommend you to start early in the morning and drive as much as possible. Stop at Lucknow for the night.

Another long day of driving or riding would be this day. Cover as much distance possible in your own country so that you have more time on international land.

From Darbhanga, drive to Siliguri.  This day the driving time is a lesser and you would probably wasn’t some much-needed rest.

From Siliguri, you will cross the chicken’s neck and drive to Guwahati. The road to Guwahati is quite good.

Day 5: Guwahati

We would recommend you to keep a spare day in Guwahati. Both you and your vehicle will need the much-needed rest. You can also get your car or motorbike serviced and checked in Guwahati.

The road near Guwahati is good, but as you enter Nagaland, the roads become bad. This part of the journey will be a test of your driving skills. Take NH27 upto Nagaon (the roads are better here) and then continue to Nagaland. The route, however, goes through small hills, green forests and beautiful villages.

Remember: You will need an ILP to visit Nagaland.

The roads are rough and driving will again be a test of your skills, especially if you are a biker. Imphal will be your last stop before you start your international trip. So check and recheck your documents again and also the condition of your vehicle. You would not want anything to go wrong the next day. If you want, stop at Imphal for a day for rest.

Day 8 : Imphal – Moreh – Tamu – Kale (245 km, 6-7 hours)

This day, you are going to enter a different country. I would suggest you start early and drive to Moreh, the border town in Manipur. You must have your carnet and accommodation details ready as it is required for entering Myanmar in your own vehicle.

Once you reach Moreh, get your documents (passport, visa) checked at Moreh ICP. Cross the India-Myanmar Friendship Bridge to enter Myanmar. Your escort should be ready opposite the Friendship Bridge.

Next, the necessary immigration process will take place at Tamu. Here your visa will get stamped. The carnet will get stamped a few kilometres ahead of Tamu. The road condition is not very good. You will cross a number of bridges in the route.

Things to remember:

You can enter Myanmar only before 10 PM . The entire formality usually takes about an hour. So, reach the border in time. Also, keep in mind that Myanmar Standard Time is one hour ahead of Indian Standard Time. I would recommend you to reach the border in the day itself.

In Myanmar, vehicles move on the right side of the road. Keep this in mind.

India Myanmar Friendship Bridge - India to Myanmar by road

This is a single lane road. You will mainly drive through the beautiful Burmese countryside. You will cross paddy fields, little villages and again a number of bridges.

This distance is less this day and you will take about 3 hours to reach Mandalay.

A day stop in Mandalay is recommended. The city is beautiful and you can explore Mandalay this day.

The road from Mandalay to Yangon is a good one. Yangon is the largest city in Myanmar and was the erstwhile capital of Myanmar before it was shifted to Naw Pyi Taw. If you want you can stay another day at Yangon as well.

This is a small distance to be covered. You can explore Yangon in the morning and leave for Bago in the afternoon. But avoid the evening as driving or riding at night can be quite challenging.

The road is a good one and on the way to Hpa-An, you will come across a number of waterfalls.

It is recommended to stay the night at Hpa An as the next day you will be entering Thailand. Good night rest is required.

Buddha statue at Bago

Day 15 : Hpa An – Myawaddy – Mae Sot – Tak (225 km, 6-7 hours)

Again this day you will cross another international border and finally, you will reach Thailand from India. Remember, carnet Pass is required for entering into Thailand with your own vehicle.

You will come to Myawaddy, the Burmese border town. Exchange the remaining Kyats you have to Thai Baht near the border. Also, get your exit stamp on your passport and other permits at the Myanmar Immigration office at the border. Here, your Burmese escort car will also bid you goodbye. You have to cross a bridge here also. Across the bridge is Thailand.

You will meet your Thai escort car across the bridge at Mae Sot , the Thai border town. The Thailand embassy is just opposite the bridge where you have to get your documents and permit checked.

Thailand is a left-hand drive country like India. So you have to change lanes once you enter Thailand.

Tak is about 90 km from Mae Sot, the border. Once you enter Thailand, you will see the change in the conditions of the roads. Clean and smooth roads, you will have a good time driving on the roads of Thailand.

This would be one of the best drives in the entire trip. You are in Thailand and driving on some great roads. You will have a great time both driving your car and riding your bike. Once you reach Bangkok, enjoy the vibe of the city.

Where you would want to visit in Thailand and what places you would drive from Bangkok, I would leave that to you. You might want to go to Phuket, Phi Phi Island or other places. Plan accordingly and carry on with the trip.

It is well worth  learning Thai free  online before you embark upon this fantastic adventure, as it will make it easier for you to really immerse yourself in the local traditions and culture. This means a far more enriching experience, and the chance to explore Thailand to the full.

The next thing you probably want to decide is whether you want to return via the same route or ship your bike or car and return by air from Thailand.

Shipping your vehicle

If you wish to ship your vehicle from the last destination, then also plan about this beforehand. You might not want to return back the same route.

In this case, contact shipping companies that can import your car or bike back to India. Know about the procedures, documents needed and the estimated cost associated with shipping. The cost will depend upon the type of vehicle and the distance it is being shipped to.

Some Important Tips for India to Myanmar to Thailand Road Trip by own vehicle

International Driving Permit (IDP)   is one of the most important documents that you need to have whether you are driving your 4-wheeler or riding 2-wheelers across Myanmar and Thailand.

Please remember International Driving Permit (IDP) and International Driving License (IDL) is not the same, though in India both the terms are used interchangeably. You can apply for IDP by visiting the RTO Office from where your driving license has been issued. Fee for getting an IDP is INR 1000.

The IDP can be used in many countries other than Myanmar and Thailand as well. With this, you can also opt for renting a vehicle in a foreign country.

Remember, IDP is not valid without your Indian Driving License. So keep both the documents in order.

India to Myanmar highway does not require an IDP as per a treaty signed between both the governments. But it is always advisable to keep it with you to avoid any legal complications.

Before you enter Myanmar, please ensure that you have the tourist Visa in place. You can apply a tourist Visa for Myanmar online very easily. You will receive the eVisa within a week. The Myanmar eVisa costs $50 for 28 days.

I would also advise you to get your Thailand Visa done as well. Though Thailand has the option for Visa on Arrival for Indian tourists, it is better to get the visa done before, as there will be other permits to worry about when you are driving your own vehicle.

You need to have all the necessary permissions for driving through Myanmar and then to Thailand

There are a host of permits required for driving from India to Thailand by road via Myanmar. For travelling through Myanmar, you need to pay the Carnet fees and Thailand requires Carnet de Passage for Indian drivers. Also, for both Thailand and Myanmar, you need to have a guide and an escort vehicle ahead of your car or bike, even it is a single one.

3. Carnet Fees for Myanmar and Thailand

To exit and reenter India from Myanmar in your own vehicle, you need to pay a carnet fee for the vehicle . Carnet pass is mandatory for any vehicle while taking a road trip into international routes. The cost of the pass can be 200% of your motorcycle or car which is taken for the security of the vehicle.

ATA Carnet is an International Uniform Customs document issued in 78 countries including India, which are parties to the Customs Convention on ATA Carnet. “ATA” is the acronym of the French and English word “Admission Temporaire / Temporary Admission” . The ATA Carnet permits duty-free temporary admission of goods into a member country without the need to raise customs bond, payment of duty and fulfilment of other customs formalities in one or a number of foreign countries. FICCI is India’s sole national issuing and guaranteeing association for ATA Carnet.

A Carnet is valid for one year from the date of issue.

The price for Carnet fees was upto 200% the value of your car or bike. But recently, the carnet fees has been fixed to Rs.50000 for two-wheelers and Rupees One Lakh for cars. Carnet is like the visa for your vehicle where you are guaranteeing that you will bring the car back to the country.

You can pay the carnet fees by a bank guarantee, bank draft, cheque and even credit cards. The carnet fee is refundable.

There is a processing fee for getting the Carnet pass for your vehicle that you have to pay.

However, once the India-Myanmar-Thailand (IMT) Treaty comes to effect completely, the process will be much simpler. We had heard about this treaty being signed for long. In May 2018, the India Myanmar Land Treaty was signed between India and Myanmar that facilitated  an easier crossing of the border by tourists and this agreement became operational in 2018.  Hopefully, the India-Myanmar-Thailand Motor Vehicles Agreement also comes into effect soon, so that adventurers can travel from India to Thailand by road across the three countries without much hassle.

Check the official site of ATA India for more information.

4. Escort Vehicle and Hotel Booking

You need to have an escort vehicle and hotel booking from advance if you want to take this epic trip from India to Thailand by road.

An escort vehicle along with a local Burmese speaking guide is necessary for your travel in Myanmar. You need to have all your hotels pre-booked as well. The entire travel route from Myanmar to Thailand needs to be predefined along with the night stops and hotel bookings. You have to get the escort vehicle from any approved travel agency in Myanmar.

Accommodations should be in hotels, guest houses, Airbnb or homestays. You are not permitted to camp anywhere in between.

For driving or riding in Thailand, at least one tour guide/escort with one Thai-registered escorting vehicle should be present.

Foreign registered vehicles will need permission to enter Thailand for tourism purposes (like that in Myanmar), with applications made at least 15 working days in advance. An entry fee and some other requirements must also be met and the permission must be sought through travel agencies based in Thailand (approved by the Department of Tourism, Thailand) who will seek the necessary permits through the Land Transport Office in the province where you plan to enter Thailand.

All these factors need to be pre-planned and you cannot do on the spot booking of escort vehicle, guides and accommodation.

I would love to go to Thailand in my car via Myanmar. But escort vehicle & guide in Myanmar & Thailand sounds expensive if I go alone there. I am from Bombay and I wish I get a group of travelers who are interested in travelling there in their own vehicles so that we can share cost of escort vehicle & guide. I presume that one escort/guide requires for more than one vehicle travelling in a same group. Interested people may contact me on 9987517171. Thanks.

Hi gone through your blogs. Great guide for the road travel lovers. Which is the best t way to travel Thailand by road-travel through local transport or by our own vehicle. Thanks in advance..

Thank you so much for the comment. The best way to travel always depends on your choice. For us, we prefer travelling by local transport. It gives a view of the way of life of the locals.

Richard

wonderful blog….sure it will help many bikers who are looking for this epic road trip. God bless you both

Thank you so much Richard for the kind comment! Good luck for all your trips.

Dear Agni & Dear Amrita,

Thank you for your wonderful and informative words. I had seen many videos but I didn’t came across anyone telling so deep. My Question : I am planning to visit my friend in Thailand and will be staying at his place. Will I still need an escort vehicle and guide? What I will have to do if I don’t need it. My friend he stays in Nakon Sawan. Pls if you or anyone have any info about this kindly share.

Hi Ashwin! You do not need an escort vehicle or guide in Thailand. It is only needed in Myanmar if you are travelling in your own car.

Ujjwal

Super informative article. This requires meticulus detailing and hands-on information. Thanks you so much. Just out of curiosity- Have any of the requirements changed as of now?

Rima Gor

Seen many enthusiastic travellers, but no one like you two. Who can dare to think about a road trip to Thailand from India? A road trip is definitely adventurous than any other mode of transportation, but it can he hectic especially, for such a long distance.

Dixit pal

Hey Agni & Amrita First of all i would like to say a big thanks to you for this beautiful & detailed article. Because it saves my 3-4days to planing this trip. How much distance & and how much time it will take all the details I got from your article. I m from Faridabad Haryana. I m planing a same road trip. But i have a some doubts.

#Is it mandatory to book escort vehicle or guide. Can i visit there without guide or escort vehicle?? #Carnet fee in Myanmar is one lakh & 200% of vehicle value in Thailand is it right? #How I can apply for carnet fee & carnet de passage. #Thailand provides the on arrival visa. Myanmar is providing on arrival visa or not?? #How I can apply for IDL (International driving licence) because I checked with my RTO office they said we can provide only IDP (International driving permit) so for IDL where I can apply?? Or from where I get this?

I supposed to get my answers. But I know this will take time so if you are going to reply any doubts that’s okay.

And Thanks a lot for this information.

Elisa

Hello folks. Great information.

Was wondering about riding trough Myanmar in its current situation!

What is the current overland travel status?

Thanks in advance,

Hello! Thanks for stopping by. Right now, overlanding is not allowed. Keep a look at their official tourism website. It might give you the border opening status. Thanks again!

This article is an incredibly informative and inspiring travel guide, providing detailed instructions, tips, and insights for anyone interested in embarking on this epic road trip.

I’m coming to India from the US in Nov 2023 for this trip. If anyone would like to join, please let me know. I would love to gather a fun loving travel-friendly group. my contact is +15052978813 call or whatsapp is fine. I hope to get on this adventure and make it super memorable!

devesh rai

This is a very informative and helpful article. Congrats and thanks to you guys.

In the costing bit you have mentioned that carnet cost in Thailand is 200%-300% of your car value. So if my car value is INR 20 lakhs, then I will have to pay INR 60 lakhs?! This sounds a lot and I am wondering if this is mistake in writing. Could you please confirm.

Secondly, if I want to travel with a pet, then what is the paperwork required.

Hope to get an answer soon.

Once again, kudos to both of you for this effort. Thanks a lot.

Will wait for your response.

Hello! Thanks for reading our blog. The carnet fees is quite high. last I heard it is around Rs.50000 for two-wheelers and Rupees 1 lakh for cars. However, there is a security deposit to be submitted which can go quite high – as much as 2005 of the cost of your vehicle. This fee is refundable and depends on the type of your vehicle. For a RE Himalayan bike, this security deposit was around INR 2 lakhs. I am not quite sure about travelling with pet. We have never explored the option and this is the first time someone asked us this. We will enquire about it in our next travel journeys for sure. All the best for your trip. And also thanks for pointing out the passage on carnet fees. I will update the recent information at the earliest. Thanks again!

Top 4 airlines serving from Kolkata to Myanmar

The boarding process in Chiang Mai was horrible. Gate change last minute left me with all our carryons and my husband in a wheelchair. No one came for him….. Inconsiderate and uncaring. Airport was crowded and no one cared….

Better explanation of where to line up when checking luggage.

No electrical plugs or USB plugs. No lounge at KKC airport.

Thai Smile must be the only airline in the world that still doesn’t allow mobiles and iPads to be used during taxi, takeoff and landing. No inflight service due to COVID but a little snack and water handed out as we left the plane. I also like the deplaning by row, I wish more airlines did this

MAI flight is all time best if can add good food options

Extra seat belt across the chest 10 minutes before taking off and 15 minutes before landing seemed excessively safe.

The transfer from Domestic and International was a bit confusing but I am easily confused. I did not eat any food, but the food on the other leg was decent. It was nice they turned the lights off on the night flight. The plane was in good shape, but was a little cramped in economy and I am small. They gave me a customs form to fill out and nobody looked at it as I went through customs. Not a bad flight.

My case was missing a wheel on arrival Heathrow and the staff were unhelpful when i tried to get some compensation stating it was not sufficient damage, i only wish that they at some point have to deal with the same situation it put me in, maybe they would change their attitude but overall it was a good flight

We are satisfied with the cabin crew serviceand the quality of meals served.

The aircraft was really old, the staff demotivated and the overall United airline service is horrible

Increase the number of available films, including variety. All other aspects were great.

Check in was a disaster. 90 minutes and only 2 economy check in desks open. Had to rush to catch the flight.

I couldnt go on this flight and lost all my money over 1,000 UK Pounds as my visa to Myanmar was not accepted :(

Thai Airways is one of the best airlines in the business. Looking forward to fly again with them.

food poor i said chiken i got pack a pow breakfast lousey .job to explain wot it was ...

We had a 3 hrs delay and they offer McDonalds pineapple pay. They charged us for extra grs of luggage and the experience was not good

Thai Air Asia no longer has customer support that you can call and talk to. All support is done by chat bot or self help websites. This can be a major issue if you have a problem and it bit us so we can’t recommend nor will we book with them again unless as a last resort.

No way to talk to support. Is all online self help or chat bot. Now way to speak to a person and the automated options are useless.

Airline cancelled our flight purchased through kiwi.com 2 months before travel and to date has inly refunded half of our paid ticket price.

Crew was nice, boarding efficient. VERY cramped seating. I'm a 5 ' 10'' slim woman and my knees were up against the seat in front of me and my arms were against the arm rests. There are no services, not even water, and they only take local currency and I didn't yet have Thai baht ( flying from Indonesia and no rupiah left). I won't choose to fly with this line again.

Good, no mini-tv's, no food unless you pay, good overall experience.

CNX is a filthy, poorly kept airport. I have heard that Thailand plans to build another airport in San Kampaeng area, so perhaps they are just letting this one go. But it makes every airline look badly to offer their service in such a poorly organized "dump". Sorry to say this, but that's what it's like. At least the AirAsia flight which I took was on time! I appreciate that.

Air Asia will be my choice of airline when I fly to Asia every 6 to 8 weeks. Thank you for your good service.

I really like air Asia. The flights are running very professionally and both of my flights this last time got in early. Planes were clean. The staff was very professional and helpful. I understand they were supposed to be a budget airline but they don’t act like they’re a budget airline.
