Doing Long-Distance

Alice Liang and Christina Iverson open our solving weekend.

Mo Farah running along a path next to a blue-green lake. In the background are mountains and a blue sky with white clouds.

By Deb Amlen

Jump to: Tricky Clues

FRIDAY PUZZLE — Alice Liang made her New York Times Crossword debut almost a year ago as part of the 2023 class of the Diverse Crossword Constructor Fellowship . Each of the fellows is mentored by a puzzle editor in order to learn how to construct crosswords, and Ms. Liang worked with Christina Iverson.

This puzzle is Ms. Liang’s second in The Times and is likely to be a hit with solvers who feel that the Friday puzzles have not been as difficult as they used to be. I wrestled mightily with this one and had a good time doing it. I also learned a few things along the way. Any mistakes were of my own making. For example, a crossing that I originally thought was unfair turned out to be perfectly cromulent after I went back to reread the clues.

I encourage those who are just starting to solve the late-week, tougher puzzles to hang in there, because there is a lot to see in this grid. Today’s crossword may give you a run for your money, but you can solve it. The usual methods apply here:

Fill in the entries you definitely know first . You can always branch out from there.

Take breaks when you feel stuck . Your brain continues to work on the clues in the background, while you are doing something else, and you will probably be able to fill in more answers when you return to the puzzle.

Work those crossings . If you don’t know an Across answer, try the crossing Down entries. Your brain loves filling in missing information, and you may be able to take an educated guess at the Across entry once you have a few letters filled in.

Look things up if you don’t know them. I know. Some people feel that’s cheating. But trust me: You will become a better solver for it, because you will probably see that clue again.

The one thing I hope you don’t do is get so frustrated that you stop solving the puzzle. There’s no rule that says you have to finish, but you will feel so satisfied and pleased with yourself if you do. And hopefully, you will have learned something from the puzzle, as I did.

I’m rooting for you. Go get this one.

Tricky Clues

5A. It’s easy to assume that “Doing long-distance, say” is about running, but this clue refers to a long-distance relationship, and the answer is APART.

10A. A bird “Flaps” its wings, and you can have a flap on a bag or pocket, but in this puzzle, “Flaps” is a synonym for states of excitement. The answer, in the corresponding plural, is ADOS.

16A. This is the order in which I filled in answers to “Partly: Prefix” before I got it right: semi, hemi and, finally, DEMI.

23A./3D. Here’s where I got stuck. This is what I would call it my own private semi-Natick, a nod to the term coined by Michael Sharp, who writes about crossword puzzles under the pseudonym Rex Parker. on his blog. A Natick refers to two proper nouns that cross but are “unguessable" because they are obscure (to the solver). Since only one of these (3D) is a proper noun, I don’t know if it fully qualifies, but it was the toughest crossing for me in the grid. I probably would have had an easier time had I read the entire clue for 3D. My eyes read “___ St. Brown, N.F.L. star” and neglected to absorb the latter part of the clue, which included his nickname, “Sun God.” I knew that the mythical AMON-RA is known as the Sun God, so I should have been able to guess that one even though I don’t follow football.

26A. This clue was so intriguing that I had to look it up and read more about it. “The world’s largest one, produced by the coco de mer, weighs up to 55 pounds” is the palm’s SEED. The coco de mer is a palm tree endemic to only a few of the 115 islands in the Seychelles archipelago. The fruit is used in Chinese traditional medicine to treat throat and chest ailments, and in ayurvedic medicine the kernel of the nut is used to treat diabetes. According to Seychelles.com , it takes the coco de mer seed six to seven years to germinate and another 25 to 30 years before the tree starts producing its own fruit. And you thought Friday puzzles were slow going.

32A. When you see the word “figure” in a clue, do you assume that the answer will be a number? In this case, the word can also be used to refer to a person. The “Figure of speech?” is a SOAPBOX PREACHER, a person who speaks to a street audience.

37A. I am not a haute couture dressmaker by any means (I know, you’re shocked), but I do know that a feature of many of these dresses is a BIAS CUT. Fabric cut with this technique — against the grain — becomes stretchier and drapes well on a body.

52A. I wasn’t aware of OLIN College in Massachusetts, but it’s a small engineering school that is ranked second in the nation for overall engineering, according to U.S. News & World Report.

53A. Remember, words can have more than one meaning. In crosswords, “court” may mean a court of law or a tennis court. A royal court counts as well, and the “Title in court” refers to SIRE.

54A. Have you not an OUNCE? That’s the “Measure of regret?” this puzzle is hinting at.

55A. The answer to “D.C.’s lack in Congress” is VOTE because the District of Columbia has no representation there.

6D. If the clue “God father?” were hinting at someone your parents named to care for you, the clue would be one word. This clue refers to a religious figure who goes by the title “father.” Another name for that figure is PADRE.

26D. “Green party figure, for short?” sounds as if we are supposed to be thinking about someone who is affiliated with an eco-conscious political organization. In this puzzle, the green party is a celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and the figure is ST. PAT himself.

47D. A clue like “‘Is the Pope Catholic?’” needs a lively, conversational answer. UH YES fits the bill perfectly.

Constructor Notes

Alice Liang : I’m so honored to have a second puzzle in The Times! I was very lucky to have Christina as my mentor in the Diverse Crossword Constructor Fellowship in 2023. Since then, she has continued to encourage me to step out of my comfort zone, such as attempting to make a themeless puzzle for the first time. (My initial reaction? OH HELL NO.) We started with the fun phrase SOAPBOX PREACHER as our SEED. For me, the fill was quite a challenge (IN A GOOD WAY!), so it was immensely helpful to have a veteran constructor such as Christina by my side. Christina Iverson : Alice was my FELLOW in the Diverse Crossword Constructor Fellowship last year, and we had fun collaborating on a couple of puzzles after the fellowship wrapped up. “Figure of speech?” was her very AMUSING clue and the inspiration behind this puzzle. I hope you’ll find that this puzzle BLENDED our constructing styles in a pleasing way!
