Here's why PGA Tour pros are wearing yellow ribbons on Sunday at the Memorial

1257070867

Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy were wearing yellow shirts and sporting yellow ribbons to support Jack Nicklaus and his "Play Yellow" initative during the final round of the 2020 Memorial.

Jack Nicklaus’ influence at the Memorial Tournament is unmistakable. From the golf course (which he designed), to its tournament set-up, to the manual leader boards operated around the course during tournament week (even with no fans on the grounds), to the white caddie shirts to the milkshakes in the clubhouse, there’s hardly an aspect of the event that Nicklaus hasn’t impacted.

In turn, those competing in the event appreciate everything that Nicklaus has done for the game. And as a sign of their respect, those playing on Sunday wore a yellow ribbon in a salute to Nicklaus and one of his biggest off-the-course pursuit.

In 2019, Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara, helped launch the “Play Yellow” campaign in conjunction with the PGA Tour and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to raise funds pediatric care that insurance programs don’t cover. Their initial goal was to bring in $100 million over five years.

During the 2020 Memorial, Jack and Barbara asked players to sport the ribbons and wear yellow to support the cause.

The color yellow became sentimental to Nicklaus more than 50 years ago when he met Craig Smith, the 10-year-old son of Barbara’s minister and a passionate fan of Jack’s from Columbus, Ohio. Smith was diagnosed in 1968 with a rare bone cancer, which would eventually take his life three years late. Jack frequently talked to Smith to offer support. After a Nicklaus’ victory, Smith told him that he knew he would win because he was wearing his “lucky” yellow shirt. From there, it became a signature look for Nicklaus.

Those watching the tournament can purchase “Play Yellow” gear to support the cause at playyellow.com or can click here to make donations to their local children’s hospitals.

Why PGA Tour stars are wearing yellow ribbons on their hats at Cognizant Classic

The PGA Tour stars at the weather-delayed Cognizant Classic at PGA National are wearing yellow ribbons on their hats this week; here's why.

pga tour players wearing yellow ribbons

You might be wondering why the PGA Tour stars were wearing yellow ribbons on their hats during the Cognizant Classic .

There is a very simple and heart-warming reason why.

The ribbons are part of a charity initiative called Play Yellow, spearheaded by living golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his wife Barbara.

Money raised helps raise awareness for children's hospitals in North America. Since 2019, more than $100m has been given to charity.

The Golden Bear hopped into the commentary booth during the coverage on NBC over the weekend to explain more.

His foundation has been the primary charity partner of the tournament since 2007.

Clearly, yellow is a significant colour to Nicklaus as he wore it on Sundays during tournaments over the course of his illustrious career.

According to the official PGA Tour website, Nicklaus began wearing the colour after meeting a child named Craig who was diagnosed with bone cancer.

After asking the child what his favourite colour was, Nicklaus told the boy he would always wear it on Sundays when Craig was watching.

The Play Yellow initiative has also been a feature of the Memorial, of which Nicklaus hosts, since 2019.

The Cognizant Classic was forced into a Monday finish after inclement weather delayed the tournament.

A number of golf fans on social media were furious , given the forecast looked horrendous.

Austin Eckroat was closing in on his maiden win when play was suspended on Sunday evening.

South Africa's Erik van Rooyen was also in the mix.

'Yellow out': What do the yellow ribbons at the Memorial Tournament final round mean?

pga tour players wearing yellow ribbons

Heading into the final day of the 2023 Memorial Tournament, golfers are set to add an additional element to their attire at Muirfield Village Golf Club.

Many golfers and Memorial Tournament attendees are set to don a yellow ribbon to participate in the PGA Tour and Children's Miracle Network campaign to raise $100 million for CMN hospitals including Nationwide Children's Hospital over the next five years to fund pediatric care for millions of children.

Live Memorial Tournament updates: Denny McCarthy holds lead midway through Memorial final

Here's why yellow is taking over Muirfield Village Sunday.

Why is the ribbon golfers are wearing at the Memorial Tournament yellow?

The "Play Yellow" theme, according to the Memorial Tournament website, is inspired by the yellow shirts Jack Nicklaus wore in the final round of tournaments. He wore yellow to honor Craig Smith: the son of a close friend that fought bone cancer and died at 13 in 1971.

He won the 1986 Masters Tournament wearing a yellow shirt.

How are Memorial Tournament players, attendees raising money for Children's Miracle Network hospitals?

The "Play Yellow" campaign invites Memorial Tournament fans and players to do the following to help raise money for the CMN hospitals:

  • Wear yellow for Sunday's final round.
  • Purchase special AHEAD brand or Nicklaus merchandise in the golf shop.
  • Donate at concession stands or within the golf shop.

All donations made during the Memorial will be distributes and assigned to multiple initiatives within Nationwide Children's Hospital.

How can I donate to the Memorial Tournament's Play Yellow campaign?

Donations to the campaign can be made at  playyellow.org.

Why Are Players And Caddies Wearing Yellow Ribbons At The Memorial?

Many players and caddies are either wearing yellow items of clothing or a yellow ribbon during the final round of the Memorial Tournament , but why?

It's to help raise money for charity, with a $100m goal over five years hoping to be raised for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. The ' Play Yellow ' movement is spearheaded by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus and in partnership with the PGA Tour and Children's Miracle Network Hospitals. It has been running since 2019 and players in all rounds of The Memorial do their bit by wearing yellow shirts, caps or ribbons.

“'Play Yellow for Children’s Hospitals' strives to bring the entire golf world together to help the 10 million kids treated at local children’s hospitals each year," the Play Yellow website states.

The color yellow is significant to Jack Nicklaus as he wore it on Sundays during tournaments in his professional career. He started wearing yellow due to a child named Craig who was diagnosed with bone cancer according to the PGA Tour .

Nicklaus asked Craig what his favorite color golf shirt was, and it turned out that yellow was his lucky color. Craig and his grandfather said that they played better when they wore yellow, so Nicklaus stated that he'd wear the color on Sundays so Craig could see him wearing it on TV.

"The PGA TOUR is honored to join Jack and Barbara Nicklaus to Play Yellow," Commissioner Jay Monahan said.

"With your support, we can help patients at children’s hospitals across North America. For many years, the Nicklaus family has supported children’s hospitals in their home states of Ohio and Florida. Today, the PGA TOUR is excited to join them and Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals to engage the entire golf world in impacting even more lives with a unique, new initiative."

Jack Nicklaus once again hosts The Memorial Tournament this week at his Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio on the outskirts of Columbus. The Golden Bear bought the property in the 60s and the course opened in 1974. It is named after Muirfield in Scotland, where Nicklaus made his Walker Cup debut in 1959 and then won his first Open Championship in 1966.

PGA Players Unite and Wear a Yellow Ribbon During Memorial Tournament

Allison DeGrushe - Author

Jun. 5 2023, Updated 4:06 p.m. ET

During the final day of the 2023 Memorial Tournament, many PGA golfers and caddies added an additional item to their attire — a yellow ribbon! Why is that? Keep reading for all the known details.

Why are PGA players wearing yellow ribbons?

As one could expect, PGA players wore a yellow ribbon to help raise money for charity! Launched alongside the PGA Tour, the " Play Yellow " campaign strives to raise $100 million over the next five years for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals to help fund pediatric care for millions of children.

The "Play Yellow" movement — overseen by retired pro golfer Jack Nicklaus and his wife, Barbara — is inspired by the yellow shirts Jack wore in the final rounds of tournaments. He began wearing yellow to honor Craig Smith, the son of a close friend who battled bone cancer and died in 1971 at the age of 13.

Jack stayed by Craig's side as his illness progressed; during one of his visits, the golfer asked Craig about his favorite color golf shirt. Craig said he and his grandfather believed they played better when they wore yellow, so Jack decided he'd wear that color on Sundays in honor of Craig.

"It meant everything to Craig," Dr. William E. Smith, the boy's father, told Golf World in 2011, per the PGA . "When Craig would see Jack on TV in a yellow shirt, he'd say, 'Hello to you, Jack.'"

To help support the "Play Yellow" campaign, Memorial Tournament attendees and players are invited to :

  • Wear yellow for Sunday's final round.
  • Purchase special AHEAD brand or Nicklaus merchandise in the golf shop.
  • Donate at concession stands or within the golf shop

All donations made during the week of the Memorial will be distributed and assigned to various initiatives within Nationwide Children's Hospital, per the tournament's official website .

The 2022 Players Championship is currently underway at the TPC Sawgrass. However, they suspended the majority of day one due to dangerous weather conditions. Hence, round one will begin early on Friday, as players who are yet to finish will tee off and then start their round two.

The possibility of all players completing their two rounds on Friday is minimal. So it is likely that the second round will get extended to Saturday even if there is no weather interruption. Amidst the chaos on the course, what also caught fans’ attention were yellow and blue ribbons on the caps of many players. Notably, here’s the reason behind it.

Why are players wearing ribbons at the 2022 Players Championship?

Players Championship is one of the most prominent non-major golf tournaments on the PGA Tour. Hence, the field has all the big names in the sport, who were spotted yesterday, wearing a ribbon on their caps and hats. This gesture was notably done as a show of solidarity to Ukraine as it battles through a political catastrophe.

Meanwhile, Players Championship is the flagship event of the PGA Tour, and this year the purse for this event is $20 million. Hence, players will be eager to win the event this week and get their hands on the trophy.

After round one, Tommy Fleetwood and Tom Hoge lead the event with a score of -6. However, there are four golfers right behind them with a score of -5. Nevertheless, there are plenty of players who are yet to finish their first round. So the leaderboard will see a lot of upheavals.

But that being said, it is highly unlikely we will see a different leader after all players finish their first round. They might join Fleetwood and Tom at the top, but going past them looks highly unlikely.

With the whole schedule disturbed, it will be interesting to see how players approach their game as some of them need to play around 30 to 36 holes today. What are your predictions for the remainder of round one?

Honda classic: here's why players wore yellow ribbons, share this article.

pga tour players wearing yellow ribbons

Viewers of the Honda Classic might have noticed small, yellow ribbons pinned to the hats of a few players at PGA National over the weekend.

They were for a good cause.

The Honda Classic was the kickoff of the “Play Yellow” campaign, created by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus. “Play Yellow” benefits local children’s hospitals, working to impact the 10 million children treated annually at Florida children’s hospitals.

According to the “Play Yellow” website , donations from the Honda Classic went toward “advancing and enhancing the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of childhood diseases and disorders.”

But why yellow?

Before his retirement in 2005, Jack always wore yellow on Sundays in honor of Craig Smith, a young fan and the son of his former minister in Columbus, Ohio. In 1968 at the age of 11, Smith was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare bone cancer.

The “Play Yellow” website states Craig would predict a victory for Jack if he wore his lucky yellow shirt on Sundays. Smith died at the age of 13 in 1971, but was never forgotten by Jack.

Players like Tommy Fleetwood, Luke Donald and Honda Classic winner Sungjae Im brought awareness to “Play Yellow” Sunday with yellow ribbons on their hats at PGA National. In his first PGA Tour victory , Im won at 6 under, one shot ahead Mackenzie Hughes.

Fans were also encouraged to wear yellow to Sunday’s final round and even purchase merchandise sold at the event.

Why Jon Rahm, others are wearing yellow ribbons at The Players

pga tour players wearing yellow ribbons

Jon Rahm is trying to nail down a big PGA Tour win at The Players Championship on Sunday, and you'll notice as he's doing it that he's wearing a yellow ribbon on his hat at TPC Sawgrass.

The reason Rahm is wearing a yellow ribbon on his hat, and several other players are also wearing the yellow ribbon, is because Rahm is showing support for the new Play Yellow campaign.

The Play Yellow campaign, announced this week by Jack and Barbara Nicklaus, has the aim of raising $100 million for children's hospitals over five years. The Nicklaus family has made pediatric health care their biggest cause, including working with Children's Miracle Network Hospitals and having their name on pediatric hospitals in the Miami area. One of their many aims is to provide pediatric care, including experimental care, not covered by insurance.

The idea is that golfers can wear yellow while making a donation at the campaign website . The suggested donation is $18, for 18 holes in a golf round, but other contributions are accepted. The Nicklaus family is also encouraging players to wear yellow on the golf course, like Rahm is doing. Nicklaus himself wore yellow shirts in the final round of golf tournaments in honor of Craig Smith, the son of a close friend who was battling bone cancer and passed away in 1971 at the age of 13.

A number of industry groups, including Callaway and TaylorMade, as well the PGA Tour through The Players Championship and its TPC Network, made initial contributions since fundraising began at the outset of 2019.

Rickie Fowler, who was 5-under on Thursday, was set to wear blue for the first round of the PGA Championship. Instead, he wore yellow.

Last week, Briony Lyle said her husband decided to not seek further treatment so he could receive palliative care at home.

"My focus as of today is on our girls and doing whatever I can to get them through the challenges ahead. Jarrod will be closer to them very soon, and will spend as much time as he can with them."

What do the yellow ribbons mean at Memorial Tournament final round?

On the final day of the Memorial Tournament, many golfers and tournament attendees will wear yellow and don yellow ribbons to raise money for Nationwide Children's Hospital.

The “Play Yellow” theme, according to the Memorial Tournament website, is inspired by the yellow shirts Jack Nicklaus wore during the final round of tournaments. He wore yellow to honor Craig Smith, the son of a close friend who fought bone cancer and died at 13 in 1971.

The “Play Yellow” campaign invites Memorial Tournament fans and players to do the following to help raise money for the Children's Miracle Network hospitals:

Wear yellow for Sunday’s final round

Purchase special AHEAD brand or Nicklaus merchandise in the golf shop.Donate at concession stands or within the golf shop

All donations made during the Memorial will go toward multiple initiatives at Nationwide Children’s Hospital

Players wear black, red pins to remember Grayson Murray

Change Text Size

Murray, a native of Raleigh, North Carolina, wore red and black, the colors of his beloved Carolina Hurricanes, when competing on Sundays. His family requested that ribbons with the same colors be worn Sunday.

“It's not just about (Sunday),” PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan said. “It's about the weeks ahead, it's about the months ahead. There are a lot of people that are going to be carrying a heavy heart for a long period of time out on the PGA TOUR, and there's a family that is obviously devastated that we need to support.”

The Korn Ferry Tour held a moment of silence Sunday to remember Murray. He won three times on that tour, including twice in 2023 to regain his PGA TOUR card. He won his second PGA TOUR title earlier this year at the Sony Open in Hawaii.

Play was stopped at the Visit Knoxville Open for three minutes Sunday when the final group of Frankie Capan III, Rhein Gibson and Sam Bennett was in the first fairway, and Murray's image was displayed on the tournament's scoreboards.

Grayson Murray family requests PGA players wear Carolina Hurricanes-themed ribbons in honor of late golfer

O n Saturday, PGA commissioner Jay Monahan announced Grayson Murray , a two-time winner on the PGA Tour, had died. With hopes of honoring their son, Murray’s parents, Eric and Terry, released a special request for golfers participating in the Charles Schwab Challenge on Sunday.

“The Murray family has requested that players and caddies wear black or red ribbons as a show of support for Grayson during today’s final round of the Charles Schwab Challenge,” the PGA Tour wrote. “Grayson wore red and black on PGA TOUR Sundays as a tribute for being a longtime fan of the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.”

Murray withdrew from this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge after 16 holes in the second round due to an illness. He was 5-over during the round, which came after he shot a 68 to open play this week. On Sunday, Murray’s parents released a heartfelt message regarding Grayson’s death.

“We have spent the last 24 hours trying to come to terms with the fact that our son is gone,” they wrote . “It’s surreal that we not only have to admit it to ourselves, but that we also have to acknowledge it to the world. It’s a nightmare.

“We have so many questions that have no answers. But one. Was Grayson loved? The answer is yes. By us, his brother Cameron, his sister Erica, all of his extended family, by his friends, by his fellow players and – it seems – by many of you who are reading this. He was loved and he will be missed.

“We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support. Life wasn’t always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now. Please respect our privacy as we work through this incredible tragedy, and please honor Grayson by being kind to one another. If that becomes his legacy, we could ask for nothing else.”

Murray started out the 2024 season strong, winning the Sony Open in Hawaii with a score of 17-under. He then missed three cuts in four tournaments but got back on track when he finished 25th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March.

One month later, Murray played in his first career Masters at Augusta National, finishing 51st in the field at 10-over. He also played in last week’s PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville and came in tied for 43rd with a score of 6-under.

Murray played college golf at Wake Forest , East Carolina and Arizona State before turning professional in 2015. Prior to this season, his only other win on the Tour came in 2017. He didn’t play on the PGA Tour last year but regained his card while playing on the Korn Ferry Tour.
