• Top 8 Luxury Mediterranean Cruises: Best Ports and Excursions

A gondola floats in the foreground with the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute in the background

From the dramatic rocky coasts of southern Spain and the romantic, sun-dappled promenades of the French Riviera, to the fascinating antiquities of Greece and Croatia’s stunningly clear waters, the Mediterranean truly has it all. With picturesque landscapes, fantastic food, historic and modern architecture, and a warm, welcoming climate, it’s no wonder the Mediterranean tops next to the  Caribbean many lists of the most popular cruise destinations.

Couple the bountiful charms of this azure sea with the superb service, all-inclusive cruise fares, and stylish, spacious accommodation that you can expect when  going on a luxury cruise,  and you have a match made in heaven. When it comes to planning your luxury cruise to the Mediterranean (or “Med” for those in the know), there are a few things to keep in mind. Here we will share some of our top tips for when to  cruise the Mediterranean , where to go and what to do, and what destinations you shouldn’t underestimate.

Why Take a Luxury Cruise to the Mediterranean?

Best time to cruise the mediterranean, most popular mediterranean ports, most underrated mediterranean cruise destinations, best luxury mediterranean shore excursions.

To be honest, a better question might be “why not?” After all, the Med is one of the world’s most beautiful places, and it connects a wealth of diverse cultures, cuisines, and experiences. On a luxury cruise, you can experience these cultures one after the other, in style and comfort, with excellent enrichment programs to introduce you to the nuances of each destination. Plus, with the intimacy of small luxury cruises, you’ll be able to visit ports catering to the cosmopolitan, rather than the tourist.

Here are just a few of our best arguments to pick the Mediterranean for your next luxury cruise.

1. The weather

Unlike other equally beautiful cruise destinations like Alaska or even the  Caribbean , the weather in the Mediterranean remains relatively warm year-round. While temperatures definitely become milder during the winter months, there’s still no shortage of fun and fascinating activities and excursions to take part in. High season for the Mediterranean falls during the summer when students have vacations and the temperatures can reach sweltering heights. However, for the best weather, opt for a cruise in spring or early fall, when the climate is ideal.

2. Cultural and historical diversity

Nowhere else in the world will you find so many different countries and cultures so easily accessible by cruise. From Portugal to France, Greece to Turkey, Israel to Egypt, Tunisia to Morocco - all of these vastly different countries are accessible by Mediterranean cruises. Don’t stop exploring at the coastal cities - opt for an over-land or ferry excursion to discover some of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets (which we’ll discuss more later).

3. Delicious cuisine

It may be a bit cliche to rave about the fine dining in Italy and France, but the Mediterranean’s other destinations boast equally delectable delicacies. Try fresh-caught fish in Croatia, flaky, honey-soaked baklava in Greece, and sun-ripened fruits and olives on the Turkish Riviera. Plus, there’s nothing wrong with tried and true favorites like French wines or Sicilian antipasti. One of the best parts of cruising the Mediterranean is that you can  sample multiple cuisines on a single trip.

Plus, more and more luxury cruise lines are partnering with world-class and Michelin-starred chefs to offer passengers fine dining options between ports. For example, Seabourn teamed up with chef Thomas Keller to direct their specialty restaurant. Lines like Crystal Cruises and Paul Gauguin Cruises have each teamed up with a different celebrity chef to provide curated menus as well as custom dishes for cruisers with specific cravings.

It may be surprising, especially if you’re still new to cruising, but the  best time to take a cruise is often different from the high season. This is certainly true of the Mediterranean. While the high season for the Med is in summer, usually from late June through August, the best time to visit is actually in the spring or fall. Here are some of our top recommendations for when to go for different experiences:

Best time for beaches

It seems like the height of summer would be best for relaxing on one of the myriad beaches along the Mediterranean coast, and that’s certainly true of many popular destinations. June and July are great times to soak up the sun on Croatia’s clear pebble beaches. Head for southern locales like Malta, Sardinia, and Corsica if you want to cruise in the spring.

Best time for natural scenery

Opt for an earlier cruise in late March or April if you want breathtaking natural splendor. Head to France’s southern coast and the French Riviera for flowers galore, particularly lavender. Of course, if you suffer from allergies, you may also want to keep this tidbit in mind when planning your luxury Mediterranean cruise.

Best time for wildlife

The Mediterranean Sea is home to an abundance of wildlife, but perhaps the optimal time to visit for a closer look is in early summer or early fall. Visit Iztuzu Beach on the Turkish Riviera in May or June to see nesting loggerhead turtles (Caretta Caretta), or come later in August to watch the baby turtles make their adorable dash to the sea.

While any seasoned cruiser will tell you that  the most popular and busy ports aren’t always the best , these fan favorites continually surpass expectations and wow new and experienced travelers alike. These Mediterranean cruise destinations add a little something extra to any itinerary.

Nice, France

An aerial shot of Nice, France, with shops and restaurants on the right and deep blue Mediterranean Sea on the left

The French Riviera’s port of choice features colorful architecture, romantic promenades, plenty of beaches, and exceptional shopping. It’s a particular favorite among the luxury cruising crowd for these reasons, and it also offers an excellent entrypoint into other French experiences further inland, like Castle Hill (Montee du Chateau).

Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy

The Eternal City may be a common destination for Mediterranean cruises, but its incredible antiquities are anything but boring. Plus, with world-renowned wines and gourmet dining, Rome is a significant hub for  foodie cruisers . Add to that a wide variety of luxury shopping - including Prada, Gucci, Armani, and more - and Rome’s long list of attractions becomes even more tempting.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Once a hidden gem twinkling among the Med’s better-known glitterati, Dubrovnik is now an A-list luxury cruise destination in its own right. Boasting impressive Roman architecture made famous by Game of Thrones, Croatia’s best-known cruise port also offers history-rich excursions into the city.

Discovering a new favorite destination is an incredible feeling. Not only do you have fewer crowds to contend with, but you can also easily feel like a cruise expert or a local. Plus, you can experience the authentic flavor and atmosphere before it becomes overrun by tourists. Here are some of the Mediterranean’s best-kept secrets you shouldn’t miss on your next luxury Mediterranean cruise.

Kotor, Montenegro

This gorgeous bay won’t stay hidden forever, so plan your visit soon. Explore the charming old town, designated a  UNESCO World Heritage Site , with breathtaking panoramic views of the Dinaric Alps and stunning fjords. Kotor takes the best aspects of Europe - from medieval architecture to Mediterranean cuisine to impressive natural landscapes - and condenses them into a single pearl of experience.

Cadiz, Spain

A true city of stone, Cadiz dates back nearly 3,000 years. Rocky coastline gives way to sandy beaches, but the real allure of this cruise destination is its stone cathedral and village of rock-hewn domiciles. The famed pilgrimage route Camino de Santiago also ends in Cadiz. There’s plenty to see and do here, and its rugged, untamed landscape makes it ideal for those looking for more adventurous shore excursions.

Mediterranean cruises: your questions answered

The first places most people think of are Rome and Athens, due to their unique historical and cultural sights. Cunard also visits Spain - Barcelona features amazing Gaudi architecture that's well worth a look - Southern France - famous for its vineyards - and Croatia, where lesser-known but just as impressive historic sites await.

The best weather in this region is from April until November, and Cunard visits the Mediterranean within this window. If you're looking for a tan and don't mind the heat, travel in June or July, but if you prefer milder temperatures book your cruise in the autumn months.

The Mediterranean has a changeable climate, depending on the season, but dry, hot and sunny days are to be expected in the peak summer months and often during spring and into autumn. It's not out of the question for temperatures to exceed 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit) in July or August while even September and October can herald warm and pleasant weather. If you're hoping to spend time relaxing on some of the Mediterranean's sandy beaches, it's best to avoid travel during November to March when temperatures are cooler and days can be fresh and rainy.

Depending on the time of year, you'll need cool clothes and comfortable shoes for exploring the exciting ports along your journey. A sunhat and sunscreen are a must in the summer months, and would be wise in the autumn too, as the sun can still be strong in September and October. For evenings on deck bring light jackets for when the temperatures cool.

For more details and suggested packing lists, see our special guide on what to pack for Mediterranean cruises .

Spain, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia, and Greece all use the Euro. Gibraltar uses the Gibraltar Pound, (although Pound Sterling and Euros are unofficially accepted in parts).

There are twenty sovereign countries that surround the Mediterranean Sea: Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Turkey, Syria, Cyprus, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.

Cunard typically sails to countries on the Southern European Coast; Spain, Gibraltar, France, Monaco, Italy, Malta, Croatia and Greece. Be sure to check our exciting itineraries for more details.

A variety of languages are spoken in the Mediterranean. In Spain, where Spanish is the official language, you'll also find regional languages including Catalan, Galician, Basque and Occitan. Spanish is also spoken in Gibraltar, even though the official language of Gibraltar is English. Similarly, in Malta both Maltese and English are spoken.

In France the native language is French, in Italy it's Italian, in Greece it's Greek and in Croatia it's Croatian. French is also the official language of Monaco but you'll encounter Italian spoken by much of the population here too.

UK and EU citizens, residents of Schengen countries plus residents of the U.S, Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan and New Zealand don't currently require a visa to travel the Mediterranean providing the duration of stay is less than 90 days.

Some countries within the Mediterranean require a minimum 6-month validity on your passport, so it's advisable to check the local requirements of the countries included in your Mediterranean cruise itinerary.

To appreciate the history and the UNESCO sites

From the Greeks to the Romans and Ottomans, men have been vying to rule the Mediterranean Basin and control its shipping routes since ancient times. Today, the numerous UNESCO World Heritage Sites are a testament to the region's economic and cultural wealth and to the diversity of the Mediterranean people. Setting sail on a Mediterranean cruise is a chance to admire a myriad of perfectly preserved artefacts and unmissable sites: the Acropolis of Athens; the Theatre of Epidaurus; the sacred island of Delos; the ancient city of Nessebar; the archaeological ruins of Delphi; the medieval city of Rhodes; the historic centres of Valletta Dubrovnik, Kotor and Syracuse; and the relics of Pompeii, Rome and Venice.

The Amalfi Coast

A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997, the Amalfi Coast is the jewel in Italy's crown. Its verdant cliffs, fragrant citrus terraces, and the picturesque hillside villages of Amalfi, Ravello and Positano have made it famous all over the world. Legend has it that the gods of Olympus, who wanted to listen to the song of the Sirens, used to walk the path that overlooks the coast. From high on the cliffs, they could see the entire Gulf of Salerno, all the way out to the island of Capri and the tiny Sirenuse Archipelago from which the bewitching voices came.

Ancient Greece

Outstanding navigators, intrepid explorers and talented builders, the ancient Greeks were constructing incredible monuments throughout Mediterranean as early as the 5th century BC. The Acropolis of Athens may be the most famous example, but the majestic Theatre of Epidaurus is the jewel of the Peloponnese, showcasing the architects' understanding of acoustics and harmony. The second-largest ancient theatre is found several thousand kilometres away in Ephesus, Turkey, an ancient port city dedicated to the goddess Artemis. This vast venue could hold over 24,000 spectators.

The Corinth Canal

The Corinth Canal cuts through the isthmus that shares its name, separating the Peloponnese from the Greek mainland. Inaugurated in 1893 , it is just over six kilometres long, allowing commercial and tourist vessels with a draught of less than eight metres to avoid a 400-kilometre detour around the peninsula. The canal is enclosed by walls on each side, reaching a maximum height of around 50 metres. Watching the ship sail through this narrow waterway from the outer decks is a truly unique and unmissable sight.

Secret coves, a charming harbour and a range of nature walks make it an essential stop in the Mediterranean.

The Alhambra

If your cruise is stopping in Malaga, you might want to consider heading inland. Some 120 km away, the beautiful city of Granada is home to the equally breathtaking Alhambra palace . Built in 1238 by Mohammed ben Nazar, it is a testament to the Muslim presence in Spain from the 8th to the 15th century. Take your chance to explore every room of this incredible structure, from the Nasrid Palaces to the famous Court of the Lions. Its incredible stucco decorations , arabesques and columns will have you at a loss for words. The Partal Gardens with the Tower of the Ladies and its basin are particularly exquisite. Victor Hugo himself was inspired by this magical place: "The Alhambra! The Alhambra! Palace that geniuses have golden as a dream and filled with harmonies" ( Les Orientales , 1828).

Mediterranean ports of call

The enchanting shores of the Mediterranean can be explored in all seasons: from Corsica to the Cyclades via Sicily, from the Alhambra to the Balearic Islands, from Serenissima Venice to beautiful Dubrovnik, every port of call holds surprises and dazzle in store for you. As you cruise from Barcelona to Istanbul, let yourself be carried away by the thousand-year-old history of the cradle of the world and the generous nature of the Mediterranean lands.

Best Mediterranean cruises in 2024 and 2025

Fran Golden

Editor's Note

The Mediterranean region has it all — amazing food and wine, famous historical and cultural landmarks, scenic seaside towns and gorgeous island beaches.

You'd be hard-pressed to sample Spain , France , Italy and Greece on one land tour without transportation nightmares. A Mediterranean cruise, however, is the perfect way to get a taste of many coastal countries with ease as you transit between destinations while you sleep aboard your ship.

Whether they operate tiny ships with a few hundred passengers or giant megaships with several thousand people, most cruise lines have vessels summering in the Mediterranean. Some even sail the region year-round.

Most Mediterranean cruises focus on one region (usually the eastern or western halves of the coastline), but longer itineraries might encompass more. While choosing a ship is important, so is picking which route to take and which countries you want to see.

Consider what's on your bucket list. Cruise lines offer a variety of options, making it possible for culture vultures, beach lovers, history buffs and family travelers to prioritize different ports of call and onboard amenities.

Here are some of the best Mediterranean cruises departing in 2024 and 2025 to whet your appetite for a European adventure by sea.

Best cruise for romantics: Windstar Cruises in the rivieras

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

For romance seekers, few experiences beat a cruise that lingers along the French and Italian rivieras. France's Cote d'Azur, with its coastal mountains and crystal blue sea, has inspired artists and romantics for centuries. The equally stunning Italian coast is perfect for romantic strolls around secluded harbors or an indulgent, delectable lunch at a table for two overlooking the ocean.

Another popular port of call on Riviera itineraries is Monaco, where you might visit the royal palace of the Grimaldi family and stop by the glamorous Monte Carlo Casino to pretend you are James Bond enjoying a night on the town.

Related: Western Mediterranean vs. Eastern Mediterranean cruises: Which itinerary will I like more?

You'll find these cruises on small and luxury ships, but our pick for romance is Windstar Cruises ' seven-night "Yachtsman's Harbors of the Rivieras" sailing between Rome and Barcelona (or vice versa) on multiple spring, summer and fall dates in 2024 and 2025.

The five-masted Wind Surf is as picture-perfect as the ports you'll visit, and the 342-passenger ship can follow all the luxury yachts into smaller harbors and off-the-beaten-track destinations. Your onboard meals, with many dishes created by James Beard-affiliated chefs, might even rival the fresh Mediterranean cuisine you'll find in port.

Ports of call vary by sailing date but can include Port-Vendres, Sanary-sur-Mer and Cannes, France; Monte Carlo, Monaco; and Portofino and Portoferraio, Italy. For the ultimate Riviera experience, book one of Windstar's Prix du Monde sailings with exclusive access to the Formula One racing events.

Best cruise for budget-conscious travelers: Celestyal Cruises in the Greek isles

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

Visiting the Greek islands is a magical experience. Lessons in ancient history and the development of Western civilization come to life surrounded by astounding natural beauty.

Your jaw might drop as your ship navigates the sunken caldera that leads to Santorini, where whitewashed villages dot the tops of steep cliffs. In Mykonos, you can head to one of the island's famous beaches or catch a ferry to explore the ancient ruins of Delos, known as the birthplace of Apollo. Budget-conscious travelers can skip the tours and stroll the narrow streets and city walls of the Old Town of Rhodes.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise tips to enhance your European vacation

For less pricey ways to see the Greek isles, consider Celestyal Cruises , which sails three- and four-night mini-cruises in addition to affordable one-week sailings. A four-night cruise packs a lot into a short sailing with visits to Mykonos, Patmos, Rhodes, Heraklion and Santorini, as well as Kusadasi, Turkey. Don't forget to spend time in Athens, Greece, before or after your cruise.

Celestyal's two ships carry between 1,200 and 1,700 passengers, so you'll enjoy all the amenities of a large cruise ship — such as multiple pools, restaurants and bars, and spa and fitness facilities — without feeling inundated with many thousands of fellow cruisers.

Best cruise for history lovers: Viking in the Eastern Mediterranean

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

Eastern Mediterranean cruises of a week or more immerse you in multiple ancient civilizations and take you to the historical places you have traveled to see, including several UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Extraordinary itineraries visit Athens for the Acropolis; Istanbul for the Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Palace; and Kusadasi for the impressive ancient city of Ephesus and sites associated with the Virgin Mary. In Dubrovnik, Croatia's medieval Old Town (a filming location for HBO's "Game of Thrones") will wow you; from Naples, Italy, you can explore the ancient city of Pompeii.

Cruises that start or end in Rome will treat you to such sights as the Roman Colosseum and the Vatican.

Related: Best Mediterranean cruise shore excursions

True history lovers will not be satisfied with only a week in this rich landscape. Choose Viking for your Eastern Mediterranean cruise, and look for longer itineraries, such as the 15-day "Ancient Mediterranean Antiquities" sailings throughout 2024. The one-way sailing between Rome and Istanbul hits most of the ancient civilization highlights: Naples and Sicily, Italy; Rhodes, Crete and Athens, Greece; and Ephesus, Troy and Istanbul, Turkey.

Viking also offers complimentary shore excursions in every port, so you'll have access to knowledgeable guides who can explain the historical sites you're touring. On board, you'll find a comfortable home base on Viking's 930-passenger identical ships, with multiple included dining venues, inviting lounges done in Scandinavian-inspired decor and comfortable cabins with thoughtful details, such as quiet-closing drawers and heated bathroom floors.

Best cruise for explorers: Celebrity Cruises in the Holy Land

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

Travelers who really want to double down on the ancient civilizations should look for longer Eastern Mediterranean cruises that combine Greece, Turkey and Italy with port calls in Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Depending on the specific Holy Land itinerary, you might see Cairo and the pyramids of Giza, Jordan's ancient rose-hewed rock city of Petra and biblical locations in and around Jerusalem.

Celebrity Cruises is a terrific choice for your Holy Land cruise, as the company offers 10- and 11-night Egypt and Israel sailings. For example, a 10-night, round-trip Athens cruise visits Haifa and Ashdod, Israel (for Jerusalem) and Alexandria, Egypt, with overnights in each port except Haifa. The extra time in port allows for overnight tours, so you can venture farther into each country to see all the key sites. The 11-night version adds a stop in Kusadasi, Turkey, for a visit to Ephesus.

Celebrity's ships are known for their foodie culture, with multiple specialty restaurants, as well as a happening bar scene. (Do not miss the martini flights.) With a range of rooms, from windowless inside cabins to comfortable suites, you can tour the Holy Land at any price point.

Best cruise for culture vultures: Norwegian Cruise Line in the Western Mediterranean

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

For foodies, fashionistas and art lovers, it's hard to top a Western Mediterranean cruise to the renowned resort towns and famed coastal cities of Italy, France, Monaco and Spain.

This is your opportunity to see Antoni Gaudi's fantastical Sagrada Familia church and other creations in Barcelona; visit Michelangelo's David sculpture and other Renaissance treasures in Florence, Italy; hang out at the casino in Monte Carlo; and stop in dreamy Nice, France, for its Matisse and Chagall museums.

You can shop for Italian, French and Spanish designer fashion when you're not dining on the best Italian pasta and gelato you've ever tasted — or bouillabaisse and escargot in France, or paella and tapas in Spain. All are accompanied by local wines, of course.

Related: How I skipped the cruise ship tour in Italy and had a better, cheaper adventure on my own

Norwegian Cruise Line offers a variety of Western Mediterranean cruises to key ports in Spain, Italy and France. The line's newest ship, Norwegian Viva, sails the Med in the spring, summer and fall of 2024 and 2025. Its nine- to 11-night cruises call on a variety of major ports. For example, an 11-night cruise on select dates in 2024 sails from Rome to Lisbon, Portugal, and visits Livorno, Italy (for Florence and Pisa); Villefranche-sur-Mer (for Nice and Monaco) and Marseille, France; Barcelona, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Motril and Cadiz, Spain (for Seville); and Gibraltar in the United Kingdom.

It's a shame that the itinerary has no sea days because the ship offers plenty to keep cruisers busy on board. There's a wealth of dining options, from the Italian cuisine-serving Onda by Scarpetta to a trendy food hall, plus a go-kart track, multistory twisty slides and a bar serving sustainable craft cocktails.

Best cruise for families: Royal Caribbean in the Mediterranean

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

When looking at a cruise with children , you'll want to mix time exploring on land with playtime on the ship, whether in the kids club or with attractions like video arcades and waterslides. Look for an itinerary that includes one or more fun-filled days at sea.

Kids will enjoy such sights as the Roman Colosseum, where they might pretend that they are gladiators; the flower market in Nice, France; and the Leaning Tower of Pisa (on a shore excursion from Livorno, Italy). Take them to the beach in the Greek Isles, and eat pizza in Naples, Italy. If you can find a cruise that includes the Italian seaside villages of Cinque Terre (accessible from Genoa, Livorno and Portofino), fans of Disney's animated feature "Luca" will be ecstatic.

Family favorite Royal Caribbean has a variety of ships and itineraries sailing around Europe, but a top option is a seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise aboard Oasis of the Seas. The round-trip itinerary departs from Rome. Additional ports of call include Naples and La Spezia, Italy (for Florence); Palma de Mallorca, Spain; and Marseille, France. Sailings depart beginning May 2024.

Family-friendly entertainment on board is plentiful. On sea days, you'll have access to three main pool areas, a kiddie splash zone, surfing simulators, a miniature golf course and even a zip line.

The Best Small Ship Experiences in the Mediterranean

luxury cruise lines in mediterranean

Sailing on an intimate ship has many benefits, from being able to reach harder-to-access ports to smoother disembarkation. These destinations and brands are ideal for this style of cruising.

Corsica - Ponant

The 64-passenger Le Ponant , the original ship of French cruise operator Ponant , regularly visits this French, Italian, and North African–influenced island. On the southeastern coast, you’ll see the limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Santa Manza before sailing north to Cargèse, famous for its historic churches. (Seven-night sailings from $4,970 per person, all-inclusive.)

Tuscan Islands - Sailing Collective

Brooklyn-based Sailing Collective , a charter company that also specializes in cruises of eight to 10 passengers, travels to this part of Italy, calling at pine-forested Isola del Giglio, home to three small villages, and volcanic Capraia, part of the Arcipelago Toscano national park . (Seven-night sailings from $3,200 for a single cabin, all-inclusive.)

Spain - SeaDream Yacht Club

SeaDream Yacht Club , which operates two 112-passenger vessels, now runs Wine Voyages, a showcase for the Med’s top producers. The seven-night Barcelona-to-Málaga itinerary, leaving Oct. 12, 2019, is slated to include a sherry-pairing dinner in Puerto Banús with Bodegas Rey Fernando de Castilla and an excursion to Anima Negra , a top Mallorcan winery. (From $4,726 per person, all-inclusive.)

French and Italian Riviera - Silversea

Many Med cruises are a week or longer. But if you’re short on time, or want to combine a sailing with time on land, Silversea ’s 5-day voyage on the Silver Shadow, leaving May 22, 2019, is ideal. You’ll get time to explore the grand hotels in Cannes, France; the casinos and the Monaco Grand Prix, the world-class car race, in Monte Carlo; and the beautiful architecture of Italy’s Cinque Terre . ( From $4,770 per person, all-inclusive.)

Spain and Morocco - Scenic

With 10 restaurants and bars for just 228 guests, as well as a heated indoor pool and pilates studio, the Scenic Eclipse is poised to revolutionize the luxury cruise market. In April, during its first Mediterranean season, it will offer a Tenerife to Barcelona cruise that also hits up the Moroccan cities of Essaouira and Casablanca . ( From $7,795.)

French and Italian Riviera - Windstar Cruises

T+L readers love the 310-passenger Wind Surf — a true sailing vessel, and the flagship of Windstar Cruises — so much that they voted the brand the No. 1 Midsize-Ship Cruise Line in the 2018 World’s Best Awards. The vessel will be making several seven-day “Yachtman’s Harbors of the Riviera” sailings next year, visiting Portofino, Monte Carlo, Cannes, and Sanary-Sur-Mer — some of the Med’s most glamorous ports of call. (From $3,199 per person.)

Side by side of a margarita and the MSC Euribia.

Two of the world’s greatest bars are hitting the high seas!

Lucky passengers aboard the MSC Cruise ships, the Euribia and the World Europa ,  will enjoy exclusive pop-up bar activations from Barcelona’s finest cocktail destinations.

The Euribia is hosting SIPS (No. 1 in the World’s 50 Best Bars, 2023) as it sails the North Sea, while the World Europa hosts Paradiso (No. 1, 2022) as it circumnavigates the Mediterranean.

Close up of a margarita.

Both pop-ups will be serving from a “greatest hits” menu onboard through September.

This is the latest in a line of luxury-leaning moves for the privately held Italian-Swiss MSC Cruises following partnerships with TimeVallée and Formula One.

“We’re delighted to bring the ‘World’s Greatest Bars’ concept on board our ships,” Jacques Van Staden, food and beverage vice president at MSC Cruises, said. “The new program brings our food and beverage offering to new heights, providing unforgettable experiences not seen before at sea.”

Guests on the Euribia will be treated to eleven cocktails from SIPS, a bar created by two of the world’s greatest bartenders, Marc Alvarez and Simone Caporale, who hide their mind-bending techniques behind playful presentations.

Exterior of MSC Euribia at sea.

Patrons can choose a perfect negroni kept cool by white chocolate-coated ice (so the cubes can’t dilute the drink), a vodka cocktail topped with a bubble of smoke and a side of cava, or the hand-shaped, metal-cast vessel for the scotch-, Calvados- and ruby Port-based Primordial, among many other masterpieces — all deftly designed to be as elegant as they are surprising.

Thirteen of Paradiso’s otherworldly cocktails are available aboard the Mediterranean-bound World Europa, and there isn’t a miss on the menu.

The bittersweet Kryptonita shows off Paradiso’s ability to delicately balance flavors with an electric presentation, while the Bacco Per Bacco plays with form and texture (using strawberry caviar and a grape-bunch goblet), and the Caribe Italiano transforms sweet Caribbean rum into a Parmesan-washed, umami-filled delight. Drinking these wild cocktails is like falling through the looking glass.

These complicated techniques could falter in the hands of lesser bartenders, but the bar owners have faith in the MSC bar staff they trained. Caporale of SIPS described them as “super cool, very switched on, international.”

These super-cool international bartenders will spend the summer crisscrossing European waters, so for those cruising for some boozing, it’s all aboard and full-steam ahead.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (May 30, 2024) - Princess Cruises, the world's most iconic cruise brand, has launched its all-new "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection. Crafted in collaboration with renowned celebrities Pitbull, Jason Aldean and Romero Britto, this exclusive line of wines and spirits promises an unparalleled experience for guests sailing aboard ships from the Love Boat.

Debuting on Sun Princess, the "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection features meticulously selected wines and spirits, each bearing the unique touch of its celebrity partner. From the smooth allure of premium vodka to organic notes of crafted wine, this collection caters to the discerning tastes of Princess Cruises guests.

Among the highlights of the premium spirits collection are:

Voli 305 Vodka by Pitbull : A celebration of style and sophistication, Voli 305 Vodka embodies the vibrant energy of Miami nightlife. Created in partnership with Pitbull, this ultra-premium vodka is distilled to perfection, offering a taste of luxury with every sip. Pitbull, also known as Mr. Worldwide, is a globally recognized musician, entrepreneur, and education advocate.

Love Prosecco by Britto : Artist Romero Britto and esteemed winemaker Villa Sandi have joined creative forces to unveil Love Prosecco , a private label that marries artistry with the essence of fine Italian craftsmanship and is included as part of the dining experience at Love by Britto aboard Sun Princess, as well as available in bars across the Princess fleet.

Love Prosecco embodies the essence of refinement and sophistication, offering a refreshing experience with every sip. This classic wine delights the palate with a nuanced interplay of dry melon fruit, transitioning seamlessly into a luxurious burst of fine mousse. Its liberating flavors dance on the taste buds, with notes of lemon, mineral, and white peach imparting a symphony of taste sensations.

Not stopping at the contents within, every aspect of Love Prosecco, from label to packaging, reflects Britto's distinctive artistic vision. The label and box have been meticulously designed by Britto himself, infusing the product with an added layer of visual allure and creative expression.

Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc, Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon by Jason Aldean : Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc, Melorosa Red Blend and Cabernet Sauvignon from celebrated country music icon Jason Aldean and his sister Kasi Wicks and fellow country music artist and entertainer Chuck Wicks round out the initial brands that make up the exciting new Love Line collection. Famed for his chart-topping hits like "Dirt Road Anthem" and "Burnin' It Down," Aldean and his family bring their passion for quality and authenticity to the world of winemaking.

Crafted to perfection, Melorosa Sauvignon Blanc is a refreshing and dry white wine that promises a delightful sensory journey. Its crisp palate, accentuated by hints of herbs and grasses, pairs harmoniously with a variety of dishes.

Those with a passion for reds will enjoy the sophisticated Melorosa Cabernet Sauvignon , a fruit-forward marvel crafted straight from the heart of California's vineyards. Embodied with rich dark fruit notes of blueberry and blackberry, complemented by nuances of earth, dust, mocha, and cedar, this Cabernet is a symphony of flavors. Its moderate to high tannin levels and concentrated profile make it an impeccable choice for pairing with rich tasting foods, promising an unforgettable dining experience.

"We are proud to partner with esteemed celebrities like Pitbull, Jason Aldean and Romero Britto to introduce the 'Love Line Premium Liquors' collection and deliver an exceptional selection of spirits that reflect the diverse tastes and preferences of our guests," said John Padgett, president of Princess Cruises. "The Love Line Collection is a natural extension of the elegance and sophistication found throughout our Princess ships and makes every sip a journey worth savoring.”

Guests booked on a Princess Premier package will enjoy these premium spirits as part of their beverage options, further enhancing their all-inclusive cruise experience.

The "Love Line Premium Liquors" collection is now available aboard Sun Princess, and will be available exclusively across the Princess fleet starting ahead of summer voyages, providing guests with an unparalleled opportunity to indulge in the finest spirits from around the world. Why do some people stay on cruise ships when in port.

Enjoying the ship’s facilities with fewer crowds is a big reason people choose to stay on cruise ... [+] ships while in port.

Cruise travel is one of the most exciting ways to see the world. It offers a blend of luxury and convenience, allowing curious travelers to visit multiple destinations without the hassle of constant packing and unpacking.

As the floating hotel transits from one port to another, guests get the chance to experience diverse cultures, stunning landscapes, and a variety of activities. However, despite the allure of new destinations, many passengers choose to stay on board while the ship is docked.

This may be a surprise to those new to cruising, yet this seemingly counterintuitive decision is actually driven by several compelling reasons.

Staying on board can offer peace and quiet, access to ship amenities without crowds, special deals, and a relaxing environment—all while avoiding the potential hassles and costs of shore excursions.

When The Ship Is The Vacation

Traditionally, and in many cases still today, cruises are all about the destinations. However, the newest megaships rival the biggest land-based resorts for amenities, and as such have become destinations in themselves .

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas sold out its first voyage within 24 hours, with passengers keen to experience all that the world’s biggest cruise ship had to offer.

The Top 10 Richest People In The World June 2024

Nsa warns iphone and android users to turn it off and on again, aurora alert should you prepare to see the northern lights this week.

Royal Caribbean CEO & International President Michael Bayley highlighted this trend in a press release about the news, saying Icon of the Seas is the “future of family vacations.”

A Sea Day Without The Crowds

Staying on the cruise ship while in port provides a unique opportunity to enjoy the vessel's amenities without the usual crowds.

Pools, spas, and lounges are always less busy on port days. The same is true for the headline attractions on newer, bigger ships, such as flowriders, rope courses, and slides.

Many ships these days offer exclusive areas or private retreats at an additional cost. However, cruise ships are usually quiet enough on port days to get a similar feel from the regular pool decks.

If the goal of your cruise vacation is to relax and unwind, this could be an ideal solution without spending extra cash.

Onboard Deals

Take advantage of special onboard deals that are often available while the ship is docked. Spas and specialty restaurants often offer discounts and promotions to encourage passengers to stay on board.

This can be a perfect time to pamper yourself with a spa treatment, or indulge in gourmet dining. Just bear in mind that onboard shops are usually closed when ships are in dock, so souvenir hunters may still need to head ashore. The same is true for casinos.

Check the daily planner, usually left in your stateroom while you’re out for dinner, for any relevant offers for the following port day.

Repeat Or Inconvenient Ports

Perhaps you've visited a specific port before, and there's nothing new you wish to see. Alternatively, the ship might be docked a considerable distance from the main attractions, making it less convenient to explore.

Examples on popular European or Mediterranean cruises include Le Havre, which is often advertised as Paris despite requiring a coach transfer taking more than two hours. Le Havre itself is nothing special, and may require a shuttle bus depending on the berth.

Several unappealing ports are now used by major cruise lines in place of Venice. If you’ve been to Venice before or don’t fancy sitting on a coach for several hours, staying on the ship may be preferable.

In some cases, ports require tendering, which involves waiting in (often long) queues to board small boats that ferry passengers to shore. Cruise lines don’t always advertise tender ports in advance, but you can often discover any potential tender ports by checking the cruise calls calendar on the websites of the local port authorities.

Alternatively, if the ship docks downtown, guests could choose to leave the ship as soon as it’s cleared for a quick look around, then return to the ship early and still enjoy a few hours of peace and quiet. There are no rules. Ultimately cruise travelers are free to decide their own course of action, whether that means spending every possible moment ashore or treating the ship as the destination.
