Singapore

How to Get Singapore Business Visa

Before you start the application process, ensure you know which type of business visa you require. Are you attending a conference or starting a business? Your activities in Singapore will dictate the visa category.

2. Gather Necessary Documents

Please refer to the checklist above.

3. Submission of the Application

  • All business visa applicants should lodge their visa applications at authorised visa agents (33.03KB) during office hours.
  • For longer-term visas like the EntrePass or Employment Pass: The application is typically submitted online through the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) website. In some cases, your prospective employer or business partner in Singapore will submit the application on your behalf.

4. Pay the Application Fee

The processing fee per visa application submitted is THB 780  (equivalent to S$30) . This processing fee should be made upfront at the time of submission. It is non-refundable regardless of the outcome of the application or if the application is withdrawn after submission.

5. Wait for the Application Review

Once submitted, the authorities will review your application. The review time can vary: Short-term business visit visas typically take 1-3 weeks. Employment Pass, EntrePass, or other long-term visas can take anywhere from 3-8 weeks, depending on various factors.

6. Attend an Interview (If Required)

Some applicants, based on their nationality or specific application details, might be called for an interview at a Singaporean consulate or embassy.

7. Receive the Visa Approval

If approved, you will receive an In-Principle Approval (IPA) letter for long-term visas. This letter allows you to travel to Singapore, where you will receive the actual pass. For short-term business visit visas, you may receive a visa sticker in your passport or an e-visa confirmation.

Business Customs

Business discussions are usually very straightforward. Most businesspeople speak English. They are usually skilled and technically knowledgeable. Many agents and distributors have visited the United States and often handle several American product lines. Transparency International’s 2022 Corruption Perception Index ranks Singapore fifth of 180 countries globally, the highest-ranking Asian country.

Many Singapore businesspeople are of ethnic Chinese background and will have “Western” first names (e.g., Melody Yeo). Those with only a Chinese name presented on business cards will list their family name before their first name. For example, a person whose card reads “Mr. Chan Yiu Kei” would be addressed as “Mr. Chan.”

The names of businesspeople of Malay or Indian descent are written and spoken as a given name followed by a family name. For politeness and respect, it is wise to address a businessperson by the last name rather than the first name until invited to use a given word. When in doubt, it is not impolite to ask. The standard and polite Singaporean phrase is ‘How shall I address you?’

Business cards are a must and are the first item exchanged during business and social meetings. The business card is present using both hands. There is no need to have unique business cards printed in Chinese. Digital name cards are becoming more popular as companies and the Government tries to reduce carbon footprints and costs.

Located one degree north of the Equator, Singapore has a constant tropical climate year-round. Daytime temperatures average between 85- and 90-degrees Fahrenheit. Humidity is very high, and rain showers are frequent.  Night temperatures average between 76 and 80 degrees. All public buildings, indoor restaurants, and taxis are air-conditioned.

Business travelers should pack summer-weight suits/dresses, several dress shirts, plus an umbrella. Singapore business dress is a long-sleeved shirt, and the absence of a tie is acceptable. Some formal meetings call for a coat and tie. Businesswomen wear lightweight attire. Evening/dinner dress is a shirt and tie for men, but there is no strict dress code for women.

Tipping is not customary in Singapore. Restaurants automatically add a 10 percent service charge and the prevailing goods and services tax (GST) to the bill.

Travel Advisory

Americans planning to travel to Singapore should regularly monitor  The State Department Travel Advisory on Singapore  and the United States Embassy in Singapore  COVID-19 Info Page.   In addition to tracking the travel advisory level, all intending travelers could read through each section as it has practical, comprehensive information extending beyond what is in included in the guide.

While in a foreign country, a United States citizen is subject to that country’s laws and regulations, which sometimes differ significantly from those in the United States and may not afford the protections available to the individual under United States law. Penalties for breaking the law can be more severe than those in the United States for similar offenses. Persons violating Singapore laws, even unknowingly, may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.

There are strict penalties for the possession and use of drugs and for trafficking illegal drugs. Visitors should be aware of Singapore’s strict laws and penalties for actions that might not be illegal or considered minor offenses in the United States. Commercial disputes dealt with as civil suits in the United States can escalate to criminal cases in Singapore and may result in heavy fines and prison sentences.

Singapore customs authorities enforce strict regulations concerning the temporary import and export of items such as weapons, illegal drugs, certain religious materials, and pornographic material. Singapore customs authorities’ definition of “weapon” is inclusive and, in addition to firearms, includes many items which are not necessarily seen as weapons in the United States, such as dive knives, kitchen knives, handcuffs, and expended shell casings. Carrying any of these items without permission may result in immediate arrest. Inspections are on all bags for regulated entities.

Singapore has four types of dutiable goods: alcoholic beverages, tobacco, gasoline, and motor vehicles. Travelers entering Singapore at any port of entry must approach an Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer at the “Red Channel” for payment of duty (e.g., alcohol and tobacco) and goods and services tax (GST) if you have dutiable goods which exceed the GST relief or duty-free concession. It is an offense to proceed to the “Green Channel” for clearance if you have items subject to payment of duty and GST.

Visa Requirements

United States citizens do not need a visa if their visit to Singapore is for business or social purposes and their stay is for 90 days or less. Travelers to the region should note that Singapore and some neighboring countries do not allow Americans to enter under any circumstances with fewer than six months of validity remaining on their passports. Travelers should note that there are also stringent penalties for overstaying their visas.  The  Embassy of the Republic of Singapore has information on entry into Singapore.

United States companies should note that Singapore is part of the Visa Waiver Program and that nationals of Singapore are eligible to travel to the United States without a visa for tourist and business travel of 90 days or less, provided they possess an e-passport, a return/onward ticket and an approved authorization through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). Approval via ESTA does not determine whether a traveler is admissible to the United States. United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers determine admissibility upon travelers’ arrival.

Singaporeans are also eligible to participate in the  United States Global Entry Program , which allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Third-country nationals living and working in Singapore may have to obtain a visa before visiting the United States. U.S. Companies that require travel of foreign businesspersons to the United States are advised that security evaluations are handled via an interagency process. Visa applicants should go to the following link(s).

•              State Department Visa Website

•              United States Embassy Singapore

•              ESTA

Currency

Singapore’s unit of currency is the Singapore dollar. Visitors may exchange their Travelers’ Checks and cash in the baggage claim area at Changi Airport (at a reasonable rate) or at any hotel (at a less favorable rate). Singapore features dozens of Government-authorized “money changers” located in major shopping centers, offering competitive rates, and they will usually accept United States travelers’ checks as well as major currencies. Hotels, restaurants, and retail shops welcome international credit cards. ATMs that accept United States cards are widely available.

Telecommunications/Electronics

Telecommunications and Internet facilities in Singapore are state-of-the-art, providing high-quality communications with the rest of the world. Whether you want to hop on Instagram or log into your email for work, it is easy to find an Internet connection in Singapore, from free Wi-Fi hotspots to prepaid data plans. The Visit Singapore website has more information.

Singapore is well-connected by multiple satellite and submarine cable systems supporting international and regional telecoms connectivity and a national broadband network infrastructure. She prides herself on innovation and has become one of the first countries in the world to be covered by standalone 5G, with over 95 percent standalone 5G network coverage.

The standard electrical current used in Singapore is 220-240 volts AC (50 cycles), and the power sockets are three square prongs, so do bring an adapter.

Transportation

Situated at the crossroads of international shipping and air routes, Singapore is a center for transportation and communication in Southeast Asia.

Singapore’s Changi Airport has established itself as a significant aviation hub in the Asia Pacific region. The country is one of the busiest ports globally and is joined to Malaysia by road.

Taxis are abundant, metered, safe, inexpensive, and air-conditioned, and most drivers speak English. Building names or landmarks should be told to the driver as the destination when entering taxis, as these are often more familiar than street names. To promote traffic flow, the Government limits the cars on the road through heavy fees/taxes and imposes a surcharge on vehicles entering the Central Business District during peak hours. Other alternative transport is private hire car services such as Grab and Gojek. In addition, Singapore has an immaculate, efficient subway system and bus network.

Most people speak English in Singapore. It is the language of business, Government, education, and the media. Many businesspeople are highly educated and have traveled extensively.

Good medical care is widely available in Singapore, and high-end medical tourism is growing. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate payment for health services by credit card or cash and generally do not accept United States health insurance. Healthcare recipients should be aware that the Ministry of Health auditors, in certain circumstances, may be granted access to patient medical records without the patient’s consent. Physicians must provide information on the diagnosis or treatment without the patient’s consent in certain circumstances.

MEDICAL INSURANCE: The Department of State strongly urges Americans to consult their medical insurance company before traveling abroad to confirm whether their policy applies overseas and will cover emergency expenses such as a medical evacuation.

Other health information: Information on vaccinations and other health precautions is obtainable from the  Centers for Disease Control and Prevention .

For information about outbreaks of infectious diseases abroad, consult the  World Health Organization’s website .

The  Singapore Ministry of Health’s website  contains helpful health information and the latest updates on the COVID-19 situation in Singapore.

Local time, business hours, and holidays:

Singapore is twelve hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Savings or thirteen hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time. Normal business hours are 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., Monday-Friday. Government of Singapore agencies and many private sector companies are closed for business on Saturday. Shops are generally open every day from 10:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m.

* U.S. Embassy Singapore will observe local and American holidays that fall on a Saturday the preceding Friday and local and American holidays that fall on a Sunday the following Monday.

Temporary Entry of Materials and Personal Belongings

Goods may be temporarily imported under the Temporary Import Scheme for a period of six months and for purposes such as repairs, testing and stage performances, auctions, displays, exhibitions or other similar events without the payment of duty and/or GST.  A banker’s guarantee or insurance bond is required under the Temporary Import Scheme.  The temporary imports are covered by a Customs Inward Permit or a Carnet.  Goods temporarily imported must be re-exported within the prescribed period using a Customs Export permit.  GST must be paid if the goods are not subsequently re-exported.  The procedures governing such importation can be found at the website of Singapore Customs .

Business Visa for Singapore

A Business Visa for Singapore is required for any foreign nationals to enter Singapore for business purposes. Before entering Singapore, you must apply for and receive a Singapore business visa.

The validity of the Singapore business visa, which allows for multiple entries, is up to two years after the date of issuance. However, the maximum validity period for each entry is 30 days. Therefore, you must submit your application for a Singapore business visa at least two weeks before the date you want to visit.

This visa is different from the Singapore work pass and permits you to travel to Singapore for both personal and business travel.

How to Apply for a Business Visa in Singapore

A quick computerised application process for Singapore business visas is now accessible. The process has been greatly streamlined and accelerated using this technology. Usually, it takes five to seven business days from the time of application to acquire your visa. Through this application process, you will receive a pdf file containing your visa, which you can print.

Detailed Information for Your Singapore Business Visa

In addition to your finished application, you must include the following to be granted a Singapore business visa:

  • Original passport with at least two blank pages and at least six months of validity.
  • A modern coloured 35×45 image with a white background
  • Must have filled out Form V39 (A)
  • Letter of invitation from the host organisation
  • A private cover letter outlining the reason behind your journey

In some circumstances, you can be asked where you plan to stay and would need to present evidence of this, like a copy of your hotel reservations.

You might be required to provide an employment card as well as documentation for your company, such as articles of incorporation, a partnership agreement, or a certificate of registration. You can also be asked to show documentation proving that you live abroad.

Additionally, it is advised that you buy travel and health insurance in case you experience a medical emergency while in Singapore because the cost of medical care there can be relatively high. In the event of a medical emergency, delayed baggage, or other travel-related interruption, travel insurance can help.

Utilising Your Business Visa for Singapore

You must show it and your passport to immigration officials once you arrive in Singapore. You may be questioned about your itinerary, vacation plans, and lodgings in Singapore.

You can also be asked for evidence of your ability to pay for your travel. For example, if you have medical insurance when visiting Singapore, you may be requested to show proof of it.

If you plan on regional travel beyond Singapore, make sure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond the date you plan to enter other countries in the region. COVID-19 Requirements: There are no COVID-related entry requirements for U.S. citizens.

Safety and Security

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

In Singapore, you may be taken in for questioning if you don’t have your passport with you. Travelers should be aware of the following penalties for certain crimes in Singapore:

·         Possible arrest for jaywalking, littering, or spitting

·         Mandatory caning (a form of physical punishment) for certain vandalism offenses

·         Possible imprisonment, caning, or fines for immigration violations

·         Possible imprisonment, caning or fines for sex crimes or sexually inappropriate behavior. Lewd, unwanted behavior, including inappropriate comments, messages, or photography toward women who find it offensive may result in fines and imprisonment (“Insulting the modesty of woman”). If there is unwanted physical contact of any kind involved (“Outrage of modesty,” molestation), the laws are gender neutral and punishments generally more severe.

·         Severe penalties for drug-related charges, including the death penalty or caning.

·         Strict penalties for those who illegally possess or carry firearms, or who commit crimes with firearms

If you are suspected of consuming or possessing illegal drugs , police may:

·         Conduct unannounced drug tests and property searches, including upon entry into Singapore

·         Require you to provide a urine or blood sample on short notice

A positive finding or an unwillingness to participate can lead to:

·         Denial of entry into Singapore

·         Detention

·         Confiscation of your passport while under investigation

Singaporean authorities may arrest and convict any permanent residents of Singapore even if they have consumed illegal drugs outside of Singapore.

Singapore does not recognize dual nationality beyond the age of 22, and it strictly enforces universal national service for all male citizens and permanent residents. To determine if you have a national service obligation, contact the  Ministry of Defense.

Drunk and disorderly conduct can lead to a SG$1,000 fine or imprisonment. It is illegal to drink alcohol in a public place between 10:30 pm and 7:00 am. The areas of Geylang and Little India are designated as “Liquor Control Zones” where drinking in public places is prohibited all weekend, on public holidays, and on the eve of public holidays.

Public Demonstrations:  Public demonstrations are legal only at Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park. Most outdoor public assemblies require a police permit. Singapore forbids foreign nationals who do not have permanent resident status from participating in or observing permitted public demonstrations, assemblies, and processions at Speakers’ Corner. Penalties may be severe, including large fines and/or imprisonment.

Some laws are also prosecutable in the United States, regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Arrest Notification:  If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. See our  webpage  for further information.

Faith-Based Travelers:  The Singapore Convention of Jehovah’s Witness and the Unification Church are banned by the Singapore government. All written materials published by the International Bible Students Association and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, publishing arms of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, remain banned. Possible penalties include fines and imprisonment.

LGBTI Travelers:  Singapore does not recognize same-sex unions. The Penal Code criminalizes any “act of gross indecency” between two men and prescribes a sentence not exceeding two years for those found guilty under this law. The Singaporean government has stated that it will not enforce this section of the Penal Code but it remains on the statute books. The government restricts foreigners from involvement in public events that champion LGBTI issues. LGBTI individuals may have difficulty gaining employment in certain sectors of the civil service. The  Ministry of Manpower  does not issue dependent passes (work permits) to partners in lesbian and gay relationships, even if legally married in another country.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Singapore does not explicitly prohibit discrimination against persons with disabilities. Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is as prevalent as in the United States. The most common types of accessibility include accessible facilities, information, and access to services. Expect accessibility to be common in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be expelled, arrested, imprisoned, or even caned.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

  • Possible arrest for jaywalking, littering, or spitting
  • Mandatory caning (a form of corporal punishment) for certain vandalism offenses

Singaporean authorities may arrest and convict any permanent residents of Singapore even if they have consumed illegal drugs outside of Singapore.

Singapore does not recognize dual nationality beyond the age of 22, and it strictly enforces universal national service for all male citizens and permanent residents. To determine if you will have a national service obligation, you should contact the Ministry of Defense .

Drunk and disorderly conduct is treated seriously, and can lead to a fine or imprisonment. As of April 1, 2015, it is illegal to drink alcohol in a public place between 10:30 pm and 7:00 am. The areas of Geylang and Little India are designated as “Liquor Control Zones” where drinking in public places is prohibited all weekend, on public holidays, and on the eve of public holidays. Under the Liquor Control Act, you could be fined up to SG$1,000 for consuming alcohol in a public place during prohibited hours.

Public Demonstrations:  Public demonstrations are legal only at Speakers’ Corner in Hong Lim Park and most outdoor public assemblies require a police permit. Singapore amended its laws in April 2017 to forbid foreign nationals who are not permanent residents from observing permitted public demonstrations, assemblies, and processions at Speakers’ Corner. The law does not distinguish between participants and observers, so anyone at Speakers’ Corner could be considered part of an event. Penalties may be severe, including large fines and/or imprisonment.

Faith-Based Travelers:  The Singapore Convention of Jehovah’s Witness and the Unification Church continue to be banned by the Singapore government. All written materials published by the International Bible Students Association and the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society, publishing arms of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, remained banned by the government.

The Singaporean government has stated that it will not enforce this section of the Penal Code but it remains on the statute books. The government issues permits for open air events that openly champion LGBTI issues on a limited basis but new regulations restrict foreign involvement. LGBTI individuals may have difficulty gaining employment in certain sectors of the civil service. The  Ministry of Manpower  does not issue dependent passes (work permits) to partners in lesbian and gay relationships, even if legally married in another country.

Travelers Who Require Accessibility Assistance:  Singapore has established a comprehensive code of standards for barrier-free accessibility, including facilities for persons with physical disabilities, in all new buildings and has mandated the progressive upgrading of older structures. The  Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) is responsible for protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and implementing programs and services in the disability sector.

Good medical care is widely available in Singapore. Doctors and hospitals:

  • expect immediate, up-front payment for health services by credit card or cash
  • generally do not accept U.S. health insurance
  • may require a substantial deposit before admitting you for any major medical treatment.

U.S. Embassy Singapore maintains information on doctors and hospitals here . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

In certain circumstances, the Ministry of Health may access patient medical records without the consent of the patient, and in certain circumstances physicians may be required to report information relating to the diagnosis or treatment without the patient's consent.

Employment pass holders are subject to medical exams and may be denied or deported on medical grounds, including for HIV infection.

For emergency services in Singapore, dial 955.

Ambulance services are widely available. We do not pay medical bills. Be aware that U.S. Medicare does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See our webpage for more information on insurance coverage.

Visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for more information on type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas. We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Check with Singapore’s Health Sciences Authority to ensure the medication is legal in Singapore.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in Singapore set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Singapore High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Singapore.

Passport validity requirements

To enter Singapore, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ 6 months after the date you arrive.

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

If you are resident in Singapore, there is no minimum passport validity required. Apply for a renewal before your passport expires.

Dual nationality

Singapore does not recognise dual nationality beyond the age of 21. A citizen of Singapore is required by Singapore law to renounce any other nationalities before the age of 22 in order to retain their Singaporean citizenship.

Visa requirements

You can visit Singapore without a visa for tourism or business. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority decides who can enter Singapore and how long they can stay. The period of stay permitted is at the discretion of the immigration officer. It is normally between 14 and 30 days for British citizens.

Penalties for overstaying

Penalties for overstaying the time allowed include fines, imprisonment, caning and deportation depending on how long you have overstayed. When you leave Singapore, officials can take your fingerprints if they suspect you are involved in any crime.

Checks at border control

You must complete an electronic SG Arrival Card in the 3 days before you arrive in Singapore. This online form asks for travel details and a health declaration. It is illegal to submit a false declaration. Biometric information is also recorded and scanned when you enter and depart Singapore (iris, face and fingerprints).

Screening for drugs

You can be screened for drugs in your system on arrival in Singapore, including if you’re in transit. You can be charged with drug consumption even if the drugs were taken in another country, including countries where the use of that particular drug is legal.

You could be detained without trial and, if convicted, you could be imprisoned, caned or executed .

Ship’s crew

There are different entry requirements if you are crew working on ships, small vessels, or pleasure crafts arriving at one of Singapore’s ports or marinas.

Vaccine requirements

To enter Singapore, you must have a certificate to prove you’ve had a yellow fever vaccination if you’re coming from a country listed as a transmission risk . If you arrive from one of these countries without a certificate, the authorities may put you in mandatory quarantine or refuse you entry to Singapore.

For full details about medical entry requirements and recommended vaccinations, see TravelHealthPro’s Singapore guide .

Accommodation

There are strict laws that prevent accommodation being used for short-term rental, including for tourists.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of Singapore. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

It’s illegal to import controlled drugs . If convicted, you could be imprisoned, caned or executed .

The following items are also illegal to bring into Singapore:

  • vaporisers and e-cigarettes
  • tobacco products that are chewed or injected
  • chewing gum to sell
  • weapons and ammunition (including empty cartridge cases and air guns)
  • replica guns, including lighters shaped like a pistol or revolver
  • radio communications equipment

See the complete list of prohibited items on the Singapore Customs website.
