Inside Passage, AK

Many Alaska cruise itineraries sail the waterways of the Inside Passage, which stretches from Washington's Puget Sound up through Southeast Alaska's panhandle. As ships glide across the reliably smooth waters, passengers have plenty of opportunity to absorb the transforming terrain and abundant wildlife that Alaska has to offer. Scenic views comprise an ever-changing landscape of charming coastal towns, towering forest walls and imperious glaciers. Be sure to search the sky for bald eagles and watch the water for signs of sea lions, otters and whales.

The Inside Passage with Hubbard Glacier offers a balanced itinerary built with repeat cruisers in mind. Passengers experience the unparalleled scenery of southeast Alaska while enjoying plenty of time on board to indulge in their ship's many amenities. The route spends three full days at sea, two in transit, and one cruising along the largest tidewater glacier in North America. Ports of call include Icy Strait, Juneau, and Ketchikan. Some sailings may include port of call in Skagway. They each offer shore excursions as distinctive as the locations themselves, catering equally to cruisers seeking active Alaskan adventures as to those in search of mellower activities. The route is run exclusively by Celebrity Cruises.

Daily Itinerary & Sailing Dates

Below is a general itinerary for this cruise. Note that there are variations in the exact cruise itinerary between sailing dates. Ports of call, route, and details will vary. Known as a cosmopolitan cultural melting pot with a love of the great outdoors, Vancouver is worth a few nights' stay prior to the cruise's evening departure.

On this full day at sea, passengers are treated to their first views of the Alaskan coastline as they become acquainted with the cruise's onboard restaurants, entertainment offerings, and services.

Icy Strait makes for a unique first port call of the itinerary. It's quieter than most, a restored 1912 cannery located near southeast Alaska's largest native community of Hoonah. Explore the pristine area by zodiac or guided hike or, for the foodies, learn more about local cuisine on an Alaskan culinary tasting tour. Sitka serves as an enjoyable alternative port of call on some voyages.

The route returns to the open water as it passes through the Gulf of Alaska and into Yakutat Bay. At the bay's end lies the huge Hubbard Glacier, which, at more than six miles long at its face, is North America's largest tidewater glacier.

Juneau hosts world-class local seafood restaurants, as well as Alaska's largest brewery, the Alaskan Brewing Company. The good eats and drinks complement a full day of glacier viewing, whale watching, dog sledding, or helicopter flightseeing.

Ketchikan's location, along the border of the great Tongass National Forest, makes it the perfect port call to discover the region's temperate rainforest. Guided hiking trips delve deep into this unique and beautiful ecosystem.

After the past two busy shore days, the route's final day at sea gives passengers the welcome opportunity to relax on board, preferably wherever there's a good view of the passing Inside Passage scenery.

The route concludes at the Canada Place Cruise Terminal in downtown Vancouver.

Celebrity is the best

Cruised Alaska and had a fabulous time and great experience. Cruise was great, food was great!!! This was a top notch cruise!! Celebrity is the best!

I did the Inside Passage on Disney Cruise Lines in 2014, and I am booked to do it again! The amazing views of nature and wildlife are unequaled anywhere else! A view only available from the sea!

A wonderful place to visit and an excellent cruise company. Ketchikan is especially pretty and we would happily have spent longer there. Cruise line is efficient, service and food are oustanding.

The Inside Passage was beautiful. Glacier Bay National Park was spectacular. The cruise ship was nice, but not spectacular. But this is the only way to see these sights and it is worth the trip. I suppose Holland America is as good as, if not better than, other cruise lines. The staff was very nice. They had some fantastic classical music. But the food was not hot. I cannot imagine the logistical challenge of cooking 3 meals a day for 2000 passengers and a big crew. They also have shops that try to sell jewelry at outrageous prices. I thought I was on a QVC ship. I suppose that shopping revenue is key to their business model. But even with those downsides, it was worth it to see such fantastic sites.

The Celebrity Infinity Cruise Ship is old and is tired and is dirty and the HVAC system in our cabin did not work the entire cruise, and there was wet carpet everywhere, and a flood in our room and the crew, particularly the Officers were giving inconsistent service, the food was awful. Don't go on older Celebrity Ships. This was horrible. We may never even go on a newer Celebrity cruises.

My daughter and I took a cruise to Alaska on the Coral Princess to celebrate a milestone birthday and my upcoming retirement. We did their 7-day one-way inside passage cruise from Vancouver to Whittier (Anchorage). We flew into Vancouver from Calgary the day before and stayed at the Century Plaza Hotel and Spa on Burrard. This is my go-to hotel when staying in Vancouver. It’s clean, reasonably priced, and centrally located, with good customer service. It’s close to shops and restaurants, and within walking distance of Robson Street, Gastown, Yaletown, Granville Island water taxis, and English Bay. Love Vancouver. It’s a great, walkable city with lots of restaurants, coffee shops, and shopping. We ate dinner at Stepho’s Souvlaki Greek Taverna. This restaurant is close to the Century Plaza, has been in business for years, and the food is guaranteed to leave you happy and satisfied. I highly recommend it if you are in the area and craving Greek food. The next day, we embarked late afternoon on the cruise ship. Everything was very well organized. Our luggage was already in our room when we got there, the room was clean and comfortable (although the bathroom was small), and our attendant was helpful throughout the trip. We got a stateroom with a balcony, mid-ship, starboard side (room C419 – Caribe deck). We had a wonderful view of the scenery the whole time. We took the trip at the end of August/beginning of September (the season is May to September) and the weather was a bit chilly. I would suggest dressing in layers, and bringing a warm jacket, scarf, and gloves. You may also want to pack a rain jacket and umbrella in case it rains on the days you’re in port. Good comfortable footwear would also be advisable for walking around the ship as well as in port. There were a number of dining options, where you could be as causal or as formal as you wish. We chose to eat our meals at the Horizon Court self-serve buffet as we wanted the flexibility of eating whenever we were ready and not having to dress up. The food was plentiful and always good. We used room service for breakfast a few times as well as for early morning coffee and tea. There was a lot to do on-board. You could workout, walk the promenade deck, have a spa treatment, find a cozy place to curl up and read, relax by the pool, watch movies under the stars, try your luck at the casino, or take in one of the evening shows. There was also shopping on-board. One of the highlights for us was taking a ‘behind the scenes’ tour. We saw the notice in the daily newsletter and signed up. There was a cost but well worth it. We got to tour the back stage entertainment area, the galley and food prep area, engine control room, medical centre, laundry, and bridge, where we met and had our picture taken with the captain. I highly recommend doing this if the option is available. Our stops on the cruise were Ketchikan, Juneau, and Skagway. We had two days at sea where we cruised Glacier Bay and College Fjord. Our last stop was Whittier, where we disembarked and were bused to the airport at Anchorage and flew back to Vancouver and Calgary. There are quite a few excursion options at each stop. You can book ahead of time through the cruise line, or check to see what’s available via private tour operators. We booked our excursions directly with Princess prior to leaving. We did the Totem Bight State Historic Site tour north of Ketchikan, the Alaska Gastineau Mill Underground Mine and Gold Panning tour at Juneau, and the White Pass and Yukon Route Railroad tour at Skagway. Each tour lasted only a few hours, which left us with quite a bit of time to explore the three communities. Ketchikan has the Creek Street Board Walk, which is quite interesting. We also caught salmon swimming upstream via the salmon ladders behind Creek Street. I knew that salmon swam upstream to return to their spawning grounds but had never seen it before. It’s quite something to see. It rained a lot when we were in Juneau. I was happy to have a rain jacket and umbrella. Once the tour was over we did some shopping/window shopping to get out of the rain as much as possible. We dropped into the Red Dog Saloon for a bite to eat. It’s an old-time saloon with entertainment. The place was packed when we were there. Skagway is a small town, easy to walk around with interesting shops and restaurants. We got there quite early in the morning and stopped at the Sweet Tooth Café for breakfast. It was overcast and cloudy that day, so we didn’t see much on the train tour. However, my daughter and I had both done this tour before on a trip to the Yukon and can attest it is worth doing if the weather is good. The scenery is absolutely stunning. When it comes to booking excursions, it really depends what your preferences are and how much money you want to spend. For us, we wanted to do one at each stop to give us an idea of the culture and history of the area, but also made sure we had enough time to explore each of the three communities. Alaska is a beautiful scenic state, and just cruising the waters and taking in the scenery at each of the stops could be enough. If you only do one excursion, though, I would highly recommend the train tour in Skagway. The days at sea cruising through Glacier Bay and College Fjord were fabulous. The weather was sunny and nice, the icebergs were breathtaking, and the park ranger who came on-board provided interesting information about the glaciers and wildlife. I would recommend bringing binoculars so you can see the shoreline close up. There were bears near the shore but they were hard to see, even with the zoom option on the camera. We also saw an expedition boat while we were cruising through the waters. We saw a couple of cruise ships with their lights on at night. Very impressive. Everything about the cruise with Princess was great. They were incredibly well organized, got us on board and off without a hitch. I’m always concerned about my luggage (have had a few delayed/lost luggage experiences with airlines), but we had no problems. The bus shuttle from the ship to the airport in Anchorage was good. The highlights of the cruise were the incredible scenery and the behind-the-scenes tour of the cruise ship. All in all, it was a great trip. I had always wanted to go on an Alaskan cruise and this lived up to my expectations. I would certainly recommend this cruise to Alaska and Princess Cruise Lines.

Inside Passage Viewing

Cool Cruiser

We are on the Solstice in a Concierge Stateroom.  Where is the best place to view the inside passage?

I was thinking from the comfort of our veranda whilst sipping on hot chocolate.  It will be September after all.  I was also thinking one of the top decks so we can watch both sides at the same time.

The inland passage is truly amazing and can be enjoyed from your balcony.

Since your passage will be a good part of the day you can also walk around.   Sky Observation Lounge is nice as well as Lawn Club.

Temperatures are variable but would expect in the mid-50's during the day and if in a nice protected sun spot can be very enjoyable to sit on deck and watch the scenery go by.   We have seen Bears, Fox, Wolves and Elk in the past but it is hit or miss on what you might observe.

Northern Aurora

One of the best viewing points actually is the Sky Lounge on the Solstice.  And don't overlook the Ocean View Cafe since there will be a number of whale spotters hanging out there as well.  In either location as soon as someone spots wildlife they will alert others.

Indeed, it doesn't get much better than your balcony, and it doesn't matter which side of the ship you're on.

Good points! Sunset Bar ought to be mighty good, too.

I forgot about the Ocean View.   Both inside and outside is nice for viewing.   The ships that have been revolutionized have counter type seating facing the windows but If I recall Solstice has not yet gone through the Revolution.

The point I was trying to make, and it seems didn't make it very well, is that a pair of people sitting on their balcony consists of four eyes.  There are some folks, and my husband is one of them, who are extremely good at spotting wildlife.  In both the Sky Lounge and the Ocean View there will be a number of folks with their binoculars.  There is a very good chance there will be several people who are  really  talented at spotting wildlife.  And they always point out where to look.

I love the balcony with a pot of hot coffee inside the cabin.  Sit on the balcony and run inside if it is cold.  Have the TV on to see the front of the ship.  Really exciting!

Culture & History of Inside Passage Cruise Port

Alaska’s rich history begins with the Indigenous groups that have lived in the region for thousands of years, including the Iñupiat, Yupik, Aleut, Eyak, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. Russian explorers reached the area in the 19th century, and the Yukon Gold Rush attracted thousands of miners to the remote area. Alaska became known as “the Last Frontier,” a place where you could stake a claim on the land and get rich trying. By 1959, Alaska was declared a U.S. state. Since the 1960s, the debate over oil rigs in Alaska greatly impacted the region. In the past decades, conservation and preservation of Alaska’s natural landscape has become vital to the area. Today, Alaska’s incredible nature and beauty, not to mention cool and sunny summers, have made it a popular vacation destination.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

You’ll be cruising during your time through Alaska’s Inside Passage. However, Alaska does use the U.S. dollar as its official currency. Alaska’s main sources of economic growth and revenue are fishing and tourism. Don’t forget to tip tour providers, bartenders, and restaurant servers during your Alaska cruise.

Alaska Trip Report: Cruising the Inside Passage

Picture of Doug Parker

Doug Parker

  • May 21, 2024

Between the writing assignments on this sailing and producing Cruise News Today onboard, I quickly realized that doing a daily trip report for this seven-night Alaska cruise on Holland America would be impossible without working around the clock.

LIDO DECK KONINGSDAM

So, instead, I took a lot of mental notes. Now, back home and with a little breathing room, I can gather my thoughts and share details about my sailing on the MS Koningsdam.

Speaking of working while at sea, the Starlink high-speed internet service was quite impressive. The speeds were great for basic use, such as email, reading news websites, or posting to social media. They were also sufficient for online heavy lifting (uploading, streaming, or downloading work media files). I had the four-device package for my work computer, iPad, and iPhone, and the signal/speeds met my needs.

ms koningsdam wifi speed test

As the last trip report mentioned, the northern lights were like nothing I’d ever seen. Sitting on my balcony and taking it all in was surreal; it gave me chills (and not just because it was a windy 43 degrees).

What is the Inside Passage?

KONINGSDAM INSIDE PASSAGE VANCOUVER

The Inside Passage is a scenic route that stretches from the Pacific Northwest to Southeast Alaska, offering cruisers views through a network of fjords, islands, and coastal towns.

Many Alaska cruises include the Inside Passage in their itineraries, offering stops in popular ports like Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. These sailings often depart from Seattle or Vancouver.

Ships may take alternate routes to the Gulf of Alaska, which typically include crossing the open ocean to visit ports like Anchorage and Seward, or even longer voyages to the Aleutian Islands or Arctic Circle. That rough is a bit rougher, as I learned the hard way back in 2019.

A balcony cabin in Alaska

holland america balcony cabin

This brings me to this next point: If a balcony cabin fits your budget, do it! Sure, the ship has views outside your stateroom, but having your little slice of privacy on your voyage is priceless. This is true in general, but particularly when sailing in Alaska.

Alaska offers stunning natural landscapes, including some of the best glaciers in Alaska , fjords, and lots of wildlife (we saw bears, dolphins, sea otters, bald eagles, and mountain goats), all of which can be viewed from the comfort of your balcony cabin.

Just pack a hoodie or jacket because Alaska does get cold on the open water, no matter when you’re sailing.

View of the ocean from the side of a cruise ship on an Alaska trip, showing a row of orange lifeboats and the scenic Inside Passage.

I forgot to mention one thing in yesterday’s trip report when talking about the room: the motion-activated floor lighting in the cabin. Countless times throughout the week, it saved me from kicking the bedpost in the middle of the night. I know it’s something small, but sometimes things like that make a big difference.

Alaska Sea Day Brunch

Menu featuring various breakfast items including Ham and Beecher's Cheese Monte Cristo Sandwich, Fisherman's Halibut Sandwich, Kodiak Steak & Egg Skillet, and Triple Berry Alaskan Tart for dessert. Perfect for those cruising the Inside Passage on their Alaska trip.

We woke up this morning and went to the Alaska Sea Day brunch, where we sat with a family of three. We could have waited for a table for two, but because we hit brunch at peak time, that would have meant a 45-minute wait, and we were starving. Plus, back-to-back cruisers have told us that the brunch is a not-to-miss experience. They were right!

This was my first time sitting with people who weren’t at my party since the cruise industry restarted, and I realized I missed sitting and talking with people outside of my circle. One of the great things about cruising is the opportunity to meet people you might not otherwise.

HAL BRUNCH GOAT CHEESE BERRIES

The family we sat with was from Kentucky. They are normally Royal Caribbean and Carnival guests, but they wanted to try something different, so they opted for Holland America.

I went with goat cheese and assorted fresh berries, a fried halibut sandwich, and a wild berry crisp. It was all spot on, and I thought the menu was thoughtfully planned for our itinerary. It offered enough selection so that if you didn’t like seafood, there were breakfast options like yogurt and parfaits.

Close-up of a crispy fish sandwich with lettuce and sauce on a white plate, reminiscent of an Alaskan trip, accompanied by a small basket of golden fries.

The brunch menu had a nice selection of options, including fresh halibut and reindeer sausage. (And yes, one of the ingredients is, in fact, reindeer. I wonder how many kids are traumatized when they find that out?)

The meal took about an hour, but we could have left earlier. Since we were sitting with another family, getting feedback and seeing what everyone else thought of the sailing was good.

A white ceramic dish of berry crumble topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, reminiscent of sweet indulgences enjoyed during an Alaska trip, with a silver spoon beside it.

My thoughts? Fresh seafood and Alaska go hand-in-hand. Holland America’s recently launched Fresh Seafood program is the real deal. I’ve been on many cruises and can say that this has been top-notch as a lover of fresh seafood. I’d go so far as to say it’s maybe the best I’ve ever had on a ship.

Quiet days at sea

Sign reading

It was nice to hear the entertainment host (cruise director) speak only briefly during the day to echo that sentiment. It might seem small, but something must be said about being on vacation and not having to hear about the latest bingo game or slot pull. This cruise line appears to understand that if their guests want to know what is happening, they will open the Navigator app or look at the daily program in the stateroom.

Speaking of the Navigator app, it does come in handy but there is room for improvement. One miss with the app is a planner and times for what is happening around the ship. If venue hours of operation are a thing with the Navigator app, it wasn’t working on our sailing.

CROWS NEST WORKING

Because it was a cloudy sea day as we made our way to our first port of Juneau, I spent most of the day working in the Crow’s Nest. What I love about this space is its 270-degree unrestricted views, and on an Alaska cruise, you want that.

For instance, at one point, the watch officer announced that a whale pod was on the ship’s port side, directly off the bridge and in the distance.

CROWS NEST WHALES

Since our stateroom was on the starboard side, I wouldn’t have been able to see them from the balcony. Because I spent so much time in the Crow’s Nest, I could walk 50 feet and see the whales off in the distance, as promised.

Plus, since I had the Quench Beverage package (soda, water, and coffee), having a coffee shop on the starboard side and a bar on the port side was convenient. I probably drank more coffee than I should have on this cruise.

Dinner at the Pinnacle Grill

CANDY BACON PINNACLE GRILL

On the first sea day, we ate dinner at Pinnacle Grill. The steakhouse on deck two on the Koningsdam is popular, so reservations are highly recommended. Depending on the voyage’s itinerary, it’s also open for lunch and sometimes brunch on select days. On our sailing, they had a special Mother’s Day Brunch.

PINNACLE GRILL STEAK

We only did the dinner at Pinnacle Grill on this voyage, and it was a delicious experience. You get one appetizer, an entree with sides, and a dessert. I started with the jumbo shrimp as the appetizer, the Porterhouse (medium rare), and the not-so-classic Baked Alaska for dessert.

A dessert with meringue topping served on a white plate, alongside a small glass container of red cherry sauce garnished with greenery, evokes the elegance of an Alaska trip cruising through the Inside Passage.

One of my friends wasn’t hungry, so I had him order the clothesline candied bacon for his appetizer, which took center stage for the entire meal. It came out hanging on a rack on hooks with little tongs to grab them. This is bacon overload, which is also why I take the stairs on cruise ships.

Between the conversation, food, and wine selections, it was a value for $46.

Nighttime Entertainment on Holland America

A live band performs on stage in a dimly lit venue with blue lighting, much like the intimate lounges on an Alaska trip through the Inside Passage. An audience sits at tables, watching the performance. Some people are standing, and various drinks can be seen on the tables.

The nighttime entertainment is in one area called Music Walk, where the Rolling Stone Lounge (rock music), Billboard Onboard (piano), and the B.B. King Blues Club are located. All were lively throughout the night. The house band at B.B. King’s is the real deal and always had the crowd on the dance floor. I couldn’t tell you which would’ve won a popularity contest; they would have all tied for first place.

BB KINGS BLUE CLUB

We also hit the Rolling Stone Lounge, where the talent pulls out all the stops. They did an Aerosmith cover of “Dream On” that had everyone in the place rocking out. By the way, big props to the guy who mixed the live sound; it’s not easy to mix levels in a room that is not shaped like your typical concert venue.

I’m a huge music fan, so seeing everything performed throughout the week in all the venues was refreshing. You weren’t limited to hearing Journey or the Eagles’ covers all week—everything from the 80s and 90s to the country and more.

BB KING BLUES CLUB KONINGSDAM

I have to say that I was very impressed with my first time back in Southeast Alaska with Holland America in a decade.

In my next report, we’ll look all the ports we visited and what we did in them. We visited three ports and spent a full day in Glacier Bay National Park , before moving onto more food and onboard programming.

CELEBRITY CRUISES FIRST-EVER EDGE SERIES ALASKA ITINERARIES SET SAIL

Celebrity Cruises elevates bucket list experiences on Celebrity Edge whilst energizing communities with impact projects in Alaska

MIAMI (May 17, 2024) – For the first time ever, Celebrity Edge® , the ship that introduced the revolutionary outward-facing design, calls Alaska home for the summer. Today, Celebrity Edge will embark on her maiden sailing roundtrip from Seattle on a seven-night Dawes Glacier itinerary with stops in Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway. Through its unique outward facing design, Celebrity Edge will offer guests an unmatched immersive experience as they take in the awe-inspiring Alaskan glaciers.

“There’s no better way to see the pristine Alaskan wilderness than onboard Celebrity Edge , which was specifically designed to create a closer connection between guests and destinations” said Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises. “Our elevated vacation options are redefining travel, especially in this region.”

From May through September 2024, guests can indulge in the breathtaking views of Alaska from the comfort of an Edge Series ship. The iconic Magic Carpet ® – the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform, at sea – sits on the edge of the ship, creating a new way to dine, drink and connect with the destination, or watch for whales and eagles as you wake up in one of the Infinite Veranda® staterooms as the boundaries between inside and outside are erased.

Celebrity Edge will sail roundtrip from Seattle and one-way between Vancouver to Seattle on six- and seven-night journeys. Itineraries include visits to the region’s top spots, with experiences in Ketchikan also known as the “Salmon Capital of the World,” the Endicott Arm to spot the local wildlife including brown bears, bald eagles, sea ducks, deer, moose, and wolves, Alaska’s capital Juneau and Skagway before heading to Victoria through the Inside Passage and then returning to Seattle.

Some of the features guests of Celebrity Edge can indulge in include:

  • Transformational accommodations, from modern two-story Edge Villas with plunge pools to staterooms with Infinite Verandas. Blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living, the Infinite Veranda takes you right to the water’s edge, giving guests open air access to the sea with the touch of a button.
  • The Retreat, exclusive to all suite guests, with its private restaurant, and exclusive lounge and sundeck. In addition, a dedicated team of butlers, attendants, and concierges on-hand 24/7, ensures everything is taken care of while on vacation.
  • An unrivalled culinary repertoire of 29 distinct restaurants, bars, and lounges connecting guests to the destinations they will visit like never before. Globally inspired menus crafted by a Michelin-star chef bring the flavors of the world straight to the plate, providing an epicurean journey unmatched at sea.
  • Unique spaces unlike anything else at sea, including The Magic Carpet - the world’s first cantilevered, floating platform, soaring above the sea - and Eden - three levels of sensory experiences wrapped in glass, both offer a mix of culinary and entertainment options with panoramic views.
  • Multi-use, transformative spaces to gather, such as The Grand Plaza offering a majestic, open, three-story venue inspired by the piazzas of Italy and housing incredible specialty restaurants, the popular Martini Bar, Cafe al Bacio, and the new Grand Plaza Cafe.

Celebrity’s award-winning ships, Celebrity Edge , Celebrity Summit® and Celebrity Solstice® , will offer 57 sailings and an array of six- to seven-night itineraries from May to September 2024.

Community Impact Celebrity Cruises, as part of Royal Caribbean Group, engages port communities across Alaska through its Sea the Future commitment to sustain the planet, energize communities and accelerate innovation while delivering the best vacations responsibly.  Key initiatives include:

  • Grand Opening - Ketchikan Salmon Walk: In partnership with the Tongass Historical Museum, the Ketchikan Salmon Walk recently opened this summer, offering vacationers a unique opportunity to delve into the tale of the salmon migration and life cycle in Ketchikan Creek. The nearly two-mile walk is equipped with upgraded lighting and pavement, as well as engaging placards with art by renowned artists like Ray Troll, Nathan Jackson and Marvin Oliver.
  • A taste of Alaska through local sourcing: Committed to fostering relationships with Alaska businesses, guests are offered access to a variety of Alaska-owned products, retailers, excursions, and experiences. Established partnerships with Skagway Spirits, Seafood Producers Cooperative and Alaska Specialty Seafood, sourcing fresh seafood and other local items across its brands. These local partnerships highlight the group’s dedication to connecting with local cultures and supporting economic vibrancy while creating an authentic Alaska experience for guests.
  • Renewed Commitment - Sitka Sound Science Center: The Sitka Sound Science Center’s Scientists in the Schools (SIS) program enables local scientists to partner with students in K-12 classrooms to explore science and ecosystems. This initiative aims to foster a passion and appreciation for science and nature among Sitka’s youth while creating a meaningful educational experience. The program incorporates classroom visits from scientists into the curriculum at each grade level in Sitka schools, creating a pipeline of scientific experiences during the entire academic career of Sitka’s K-12 students. The program benefited 960 students from nine schools last year with the support of the cruise company.
  • “Locals Onboard” – Voyij.com Partnership: Over the past three cruising seasons, the partnership with Skagway-based Voyij.com has driven more than $1 million in sales to local businesses in Alaska. The two teamed up in 2021 to help connect ship guests to the online marketplace where Alaska businesses, retailers and artists sell their crafts. More than 250 small businesses and artists across more than 45 communities from all regions of the state are listed on Voyij.com.

Celebrity Edge to spend first summer in Alaska in 2024

Celebrity Cruises

By Laura Hyde | 20 May 2024

For the first time ever, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Edge is to spend the 2024 summer season offering itineraries in Alaska. The ship is currently sailing a seven-night roundtrip voyage from Seattle, USA, with stops in the Alaskan ports of Juneau, Ketchikan, and Skagway.

The ship will sail further roundtrip itineraries from Seattle and one-way, six- or seven-night voyages between Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle from May to September. Itineraries will include visits to Ketchikan, known as the ‘Salmon Capital of the World’; the Endicott Arm where guests can see local wildlife including brown bears, bald eagles, and wolves; Alaska’s capital city Juneau, which sits between Mount Juneau, Mount Roberts, and Gastineau Channel; and Skagway, where visitors can learn about the port’s gold rush history. On its return to Seattle, the ship will sail to Victoria, Canada, through the Inside Passage.

“There's no better way to see the pristine Alaskan wilderness than onboard Celebrity Edge, which was specifically designed to create a closer connection between guests and destinations,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “Our elevated vacation options are redefining travel, especially in this region.”

7 amazing cruise itineraries to book in 2024

I don't know about you, but each year, as the weather turns cold, I start daydreaming about getting out of Dodge — or, in my case, Pennsylvania. My mind wanders to cruises that will take me to places where the temperature is warmer, but I also take a hard look at the (exceptionally lengthy) list of places I'm longing to visit.

After digging through what's new for 2024, I've come up with a shortlist of sailings that I think are noteworthy. They range from a standard Bahamas voyage with a new twist and an extended Alaska sailing that includes a foray across the Arctic Circle to more far-flung destinations in the Asia-Pacific region.

Dream on, dear reader, and add these to your list of 2024 cruise itineraries.

Note: All prices listed are per person, based on double occupancy, unless otherwise noted. Fares do not include taxes and fees.

Seabourn's 'Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas' itinerary

Last year, the Australia and New Zealand cruise region gained momentum following the pandemic shutdown. In 2024, the hardly populated Australia region of The Kimberley is gaining popularity. Luxury cruise brand Seabourn will be offering a series of six 10-night voyages between Broome and Darwin on expedition vessel Seabourn Pursuit during what will be early winter in the southern hemisphere.

The line's " Kimberley Expedition: Waterfalls and Wandjinas " will take passengers to places along the coast few passengers are able to visit to see the stunning teal waters and horizontal waterfalls of Talbot Bay, sample wines in the Hunter River Region and check out nature preserves in Wyndham.

Details: The first sailing, from Darwin to Broome, embarks on June 12. The final voyage, from Broome to Darwin, departs on Aug. 1. Prices start from $6,134 per person ($613 per person, per night), double occupancy, for the July 2 cruise. All accommodations are suites with balconies.

Celebrity's 'Best of Japan' and 'Vietnam and Thailand' cruises

The number of voyages in Asia was trending upward notably prior to 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic brought cruising in the region to an extended halt. And it's once again on the rise. Following that curve, Celebrity Cruises will be running new 11- to 13-night Asia sailings in 2024 on two ships — Celebrity Millennium and Celebrity Solstice — that bring stops in Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Vietnam and Thailand.

What's notable about the offerings is that they will aim to immerse passengers further into the destinations by including overnights in a total of 11 ports across all itineraries. That means more time to explore Hanoi's Old Quarter as the sun sets, indulge in nighttime gastronomy in Hong Kong, visit one of Bangkok's many markets, or learn why Osaka is known for street food.

Details: Celebrity Millennium's " Best of Japan " cruises run from early mid-March to early October. At press time, the least expensive fares — for a 12-night sailing — start from $1,330 per person ($111 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. It travels round-trip from Yokohama and visits Hiroshima, Pusan and other ports, including Osaka, where the ship will overnight.

Celerbrity Solstice's Vietnam and Thailand cruises kick off in mid-January and run through March. The ship will resume them again in the fall of 2024 and run through the winter season. Prices start from $1,255 per person ($105 per person, per night) for an inside cabin. The voyage sails from Hong Kong to Singapore with stops in Da Nang and Koh Samui, plus overnights in Hanoi and Bangkok.

SeaDream's 'Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles' sailing

Here's one to put on your radar if you're looking to book — but not necessarily sail — in 2024. It's a new Mediterranean itinerary that doesn't start up for nearly three more years, in 2026. The SeaDream routing brings stops at seven ports that are rarely visited by cruise passengers. During the seven-night voyages, there will be calls at Primosten, Croatia; Cesme, Turkey; Cetubal, Portugal; and Kythira, Kythnos, Syvota and Tinos, Greece — making these sailings unique and well-suited to anyone who loves the region but who's looking for new places to experience.

SeaDream's small ships, each of which carries just 112 people, are able to reach locales about which passengers on megaships can only fantasize. Couple that with excellent service, and you'll be visiting the Our Lady of Loretto statue in Primosten, touring the Cesme Castle and lounging on stunning Greek beaches from a home base that puts you squarely in the lap of luxury.

Details: An itinerary that includes three of the seven new ports is the 11-night " Yachting the Adriatic & Greek Isles " itinerary from Venice, Italy, to Athens, Greece, departing on Aug. 8, 2026, on SeaDream I. Prices start from $10,399 per person ($946 per person, per night) for a room with a porthole view.

Holland America's 'Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice' Legendary Voyage

Alaska is an absolute must for anyone who enjoys the vastness of untouched wilderness, the wildlife it houses and adventurous pursuits it provides. (Think whale-watching, hiking on glaciers and salmon fishing.) However, Holland America 's Westerdam is hosting a 28-day sailing that's anything but your standard cruise to the Last Frontier .

Passengers will visit the usual Alaska ports, such as Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, with scenic sailing through the Inside Passage, past Hubbard Glacier and to Glacier Bay. But they can also expect less-common stops at places like Nome, Kodiak, Anchorage (with an overnight) and Homer. Plus, about halfway through, this cruise crosses the Arctic Circle — a rite of passage for many travelers.

Details: Holland America's 28-day " Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice " cruise — one of the line's Legendary Voyages, known for longer durations and a unique mix of port calls — sails June 9-July 7, round-trip from Seattle. Inside cabins start from $5,299 per person (about $189 per person, per night).

Silversea's summertime French Polynesia cruises

Another consideration for future travel is Silversea Cruises , which is featuring its first full-summer season in French Polynesia in 2026. Silver Whisper will offer two immersive itineraries, including overnights, across 17 voyages between April and September.

Passengers can choose seven-night sailings that visit idyllic favorites like Tahiti, Moorea and Huahine and which also include overnights in Bora Bora. Or, they can cruise for twice as long by selecting a 14-night voyage that calls on the same ports as the seven-night option but with Fakarava, Nuku Hiva, Fatu Hiva, Atuona and Tahuata added.

Details: Silversea's seven-night voyages begin April 6, 2026, and start from $5,650 per person ($808 per person, per night) for an ocean-view cabin.

The line's 14-night sailings start on April 20, 2026. Fares start from $10,450 per person ($747 per person, per night) for ocean-view accommodations.

New Bermuda voyages on Carnival Venezia

Beginning in May of 2025, Carnival Cruise Line 's Carnival Venezia will sail a series of eight four- and five-night cruises to Bermuda from New York. These itineraries are notable because the line is aiming to increase its presence there but also because the style of the ship is new to even most of the brand's most dedicated passengers.

In 2022, Carnival announced its Costa by Carnival concept after revealing it would be transferring ships from its Costa sister brand to the Carnival fleet. Now, when travelers visit the Gibb's Hill Lighthouse or check out the island's renowned pink-sand beaches during a sailing on Carnival Venezia, they can enjoy both the Italian style of the ship and Carnival's fun atmosphere and high service standards.

Details: Voyages kick off on May 22, 2025. Prices start from $429 per person ($108 per person, per night) for an inside cabin on a four-night cruise departing Sept. 18, 2025.

Disney Cruise Line's Lighthouse Point itineraries

Disney Cruise Line 's new Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point , a private destination on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera, is set to open in June with a three-night preview sailing on June 6 aboard Disney Magic. Following the initial voyage, the line will run regular three- to seven-night voyages to Lighthouse Point on Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

The island will feature a dedicated family beach and water play area, an arts and culture pavilion focused on Bahamian culture, 20 family cabanas, an adults-only beach and a selection of shore excursion options.

Details: Prices for itineraries that include Lighthouse Point start from $624 per person ($208 per person, per night) for a three-night cruise on Disney Magic. The cruise departs Nov. 5 and sails from Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Inside Passage Cruise Port Guide

The majestic landscapes of Alaska are an unmissable bucket-list experience for any adventurous traveler, and on an Alaska cruise , you won’t just hit the highlights like Juneau. From the comfort of your incredible cruise ship, you’ll sail across 500 miles of Alaskan wilderness known as the Inside Passage. This coastal waterway is filled with glacial mountains, lush pine forests, and unforgettable wildlife sightings.

Top sights & attractions for cruises through the inside passage, whale watching.

Entire families of orcas and humpback whales swim the waters along the Alexander Archipelago, and you may be lucky enough to spot them on your Inside Passage cruise. Whale sightings are most common in the summer months.

Snap a picture of a giant glacier up close in Alaska. If you’ve never seen a glacier in person, you’ll be amazed at their scale and enormity here. Alaska’s glaciers constantly shift and change, attracting thousands of environmental scientists and nature lovers to the region each year.

After cruising the Inside Passage, you’ll continue on to Juneau, where you can visit the 13-mile-long Mendenhall Glacier or go hiking in the Tongass National Forest during your day in port. This remote capital is also famous for dog sledding and incredible glaciers.

Did you know Ketchikan is the salmon capital of the world? Tasting the local varieties is a must once you’ve docked in Ketchikan. Don’t miss the Totem Heritage Center and the Southeast Alaska Discovery Set, where you’ll discover thousands of years of Alaskan history and culture.

Don’t forget to tip tour providers, bartenders, and restaurant servers during your Alaska cruise.

celebrity cruise inside passage

Thousands attend Atlanta Jazz Festival taking place at Piedmont Park

ATLANTA — It’s Atlanta Jazz Festival weekend! The festival is one of the largest free jazz festivals in the country and features different jazz artists from all around the world.

Here is what you need to know ahead of the upcoming festival:

Where and when is the Atlanta Jazz Festival?

The 47th Atlanta Jazz Festival will take place at Piedmont Park. The festival is open from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

Does it cost anything to enter?

The festival is free to attend.

How do I get to the festival? Where can I park?

Triple Team Traffic’s Mike Shields says festival goers can take a rideshare service or hop on MARTA and get off at the Arts Center or Midtown stations and walk a few blocks. You can also take MARTA bus routes to the park.

There are public parking lots off 13th and 14th Streets, Peachtree Street and Spring Street.

What can and can’t I bring to the jazz festival?

No glass containers, no smoking devices, no bicycles or skates and no grilling.

Due to city ordinances, pets are not allowed inside Piedmont Park for the event. The off-leash dog park though will remain open.
