BHAVISHYA BADARI TEMPLE AT SUBHAIN

badrinath dham tour

The temple of Bhavishya Badari is at an altitude of 2744 m. and is surrounded by dense forests. Located at Subhain near Tapovan about 17 km east of Joshimath on Joshimath - Lata Malari route, pilgrims have to trek beyond Tapovan. Tapovan has sulphurous hot springs. The idol of Lord Badari is emerging here by itself. It is believed that when Kaliyug will be on its pinacle the mountains Jai and Vijay at Patmila near Vishnuprayag will collapse, so making the present shrine of Badarinath inaccessible and Lord Badarinath will be worshipped here. Thus the name Bhavishya Badari, which literally means the Badari of the future. Bhavishya Badari is popular even now, enshrined here is a lion headed image of Narsiarsimh.

Legends in Vishnu Purana tell that there were two sons of Dharma named Nar & Narayan who selected the place of Badrinath to spread the wellness of Hindu religion amongst the Himalayan region and used to do dhayan at this place. For the sake of looking for the perfect place for hermitage, Nar & Narayan discover four Badris from a section of Pancha Badri which are known as Yog Badri, Bridha Badri. Dhyan Badri and Bhavish Badri. Finally, they decided to settle in the hot and cold spring at Alakananda River. They named the place as Badri Vishal. History About Badrinath

The Badrinath tirtha derives its name from the native word Badri, which refers to a variety of wild berry. Badrinath temple history has its own uniqueness and Legendaryness.  There are a lot of tales about Badrinath temple. It is stated that when Lord Vishnu sat in penance in these mountains, His spouse Goddess Laxmi took the appearance of a berry tree and shielded Him from the fierce sun. It is not only the Lord's dwelling place, but also the abode of countless pilgrims, saints, and sages who come to meditate in search of enlightenment.

According to SkandPuran the idol of Lord Badrinath was recovered by Adiguru Shankaracharya from NaradKund and was re-enshrined in the 8th century A.D. in this temple. Skanda Purana describes more about the place and says: “There are several sacred shrines in heaven, on earth, and in hell; but there is no shrine like Badrinath.”

In the history of Badrinath, the sages Nara and Narayana, the ‘fifth avatar of Lord Vishnu’, practised penance in the temple, according to the Vamana Purana. The religious narratives from several ancient Hindu scriptures abound in Badrinath. According to mythic, Badrinath is often called as Badri Vishal, and was a place of pilgrimage for Hindus. Badrinath Yatra Tour

Among the oldest pilgrimage sites in India, Badrinath Dham or Badrinath temple has immense significance for Hinduism. Nestled in the Garhwal hills near the Alaknanda river, at an altitude of 10,279 ft, the temple offers scenic views of the snow-clad Himalayas and quaint surroundings. The natural beauty of the holy site draws many visitors from across the country. The temple, situated in the small town of Badrinath in the state of Uttarakhand, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is considered to be the protector in Hinduism. Badrinath Temple is one of the 108 Divyadesha (holy site) for Vishnu followers, and alongside 3 other sites, forms Hinduism's holiest Char Dhams, or, Four Sites of pilgrimage.

It is no wonder then, that Badrinath welcomes more than 1 million visitors every year, making it one of the most visited religious destinations in India. It is widely believed that the temple was founded by the renowned ascetic, Adi Shankaracharya.

In addition to various idols of Gods and Goddesses, Badrinath temple houses a 1 metre tall black stone idol of Lord Vishnu which is believed to be one of the eight swayam vyakta kshetras (self-manifested statues). The Vishnu shrine has a majestic gate which is painted with vivid colours. The temple also has a Tapta Kund (hot water spring) which is believed to possess medicinal properties. Visitors must plan their visit during the Mata Murti Ka Mela, or the Badri Kedar Festival. Both festivals are celebrated with great enthusiasm.

History & Religious Significance of Badrinath Temple

According to a popular legend, Lord Vishnu came to the present-day site of the Badrinath temple seeking a quiet place where he could meditate. Enveloped by the undisturbed peace, Vishnu was so deeply engrossed in meditation, he could not even feel the bitter cold against his body. Goddess Lakshmi, who was his consort, manifested herself in the form of a Badri Tree (also known as Jujube) to make sure he was protected from extreme weather conditions. Impressed by Lakshmi's devotion, Lord Vishnu named this site Badrikashram.

badrinath image

The site also finds mention in the Vishnu Purana. According to the ancient text, the site was often visited by Nara and Narayana, sons of Dharam, who were in search of a place to set up their hermitage. Both men were believed to be human incarnations of Lord Vishnu. When they chanced upon the site with Alaknanda's springs, they knew they had found the ideal location for their ashram.

During the Vedic Era, the deity Badrinarayan and a temple dedicated to him at this very location, has found multiple mentions in various texts. Historical accounts suggest the temple existed since 500 BC.

Badrinath Yatra Opening Dates 2024

Badrinath Temple is located in a place that experiences extreme weather conditions, especially during winters. The temple remains closed from November to April. In 2023, the temple will reopen its doors to pilgrims on May 12th. Preparations for the Badrinath Yatra 2024 have already begun.

Being an important center of Hinduism, the opening and closing dates of the temple are decided on auspicious days of the Hindu calendar. The opening date is declared on Basant Panchmi while the closing date is declared on Vijaya Dashmi. The entry to Badrinath temple is completely free for all visitors. It remains open from 4:30 AM in the morning to 1:00 PM in the afternoon.

In the evening, the temple is open from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Darshan of Shri Badrinath Ji for the general public opens around 7:30-8:00 AM.

Pooja in Badrinath Temple

Many special poojas (prayers) are performed on behest of devotees. A dip in the Tapta Kund is compulsory prior to any pooja. The rituals of the morning pooja include Adhishek, Gitapath, Maha Abhishek, and Bhagwat Path, whereas evening pooja rituals are Aarti and Geet Govind. Devotees may make bookings for Badrinath poojas with the Badrinath Mandir Committee. It is widely believed that the procedures of daily rituals and prayers have been laid by Adi Shankaracharya.

Best Time to Visit Badrinath Dham

Summer season, or the months from May to July is the ideal time to visit Badrinath Temple. Although landslides and road blockages do occur during monsoons, you can still visit the Badrinath Dham.

History of Char Dham Temples

History of Char Dham Temples

The 4 Dham is a group of four Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, which includes Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. These temples are located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state in northern India. They are considered as some of the holiest Hindu shrines and are believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya, a Hindu philosopher and theologian, in the 8th century. The 4 Dham Yatra (pilgrimage) is a popular spiritual journey among Hindu devotees and is undertaken to attain Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

Legend about Badrinath

A Hindu holy town, located in the District of Chamoli of Uttarakhand, India, Badrinath is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, known as the “Char Dham.” The town is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Badrinath.

The history of Badrinath is believed to date back to thousands of years and is mentioned in Hindu scriptures such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated at this site for several years and it was later rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya, a Hindu saint and philosopher, in the 8th century. It is believed that the idol of Lord Vishnu was found by him in the water of the Alakananda River and later he brought it in a cave near the Tapt Kund.

Badrinath has been an important pilgrimage site for Hindus since ancient times and has been visited by countless pilgrims over the centuries. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the temple underwent major renovations and expansions under the patronage of the Garhwal rulers.

Legend about Kedarnath

One of the famous Shiva temples, Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag District in Uttarakhand. Situated beside the River Mandakini, Kedarnath, which was previously known as Kedar-Khand, is a part of Char Dham circuit and dedicated to Lord Shiva who is known as Kedarnath here.

The legend about Kedarnath goes back thousands of years according to Mahabharata and the Puranas. According to these Hindu scriptures, after Pandavas won the war of Kurukshetra, they were told to absolve themselves from the sin they committed in the battlefield. They sought redemption from Lord Shiva who was in no mood to forgive them easily and thus eluded himself in the Himalayas taking the shape of a buffalo. Pandavas only found glimpses of the buffalo in different places in the Himalayas which became religious places. Kedarnath is where the hump of the buffalo was seen whereas the arms were found in Tungnath, face at Rudranath, navel in Madmaheshwar and hair at Kalpeshwar. These five sites together are known as Panch Kedar and the journey towards them is called Panch Kedar Yatra.

In recent times, Kedarnath has become a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Despite being affected by natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides, the temple continues to be a hub of religious and cultural activities for Hindus.

Legend about Yamunotri

Yamunotri is a Hindu holy town located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, known as the "Char Dham". The town is situated near the source of the Yamuna River and is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, who is worshipped here as Yamunotri.

According to Hindu legend, Yamuna was the daughter of the Sun God, Surya, and the sister of Yama, the god of death. She was known for her pious and pure nature and was worshipped as a goddess of life-giving waters.

Another legend states that Sage Asit Muni, a great sage and devotee of the goddess Yamuna, lived near Yamunotri. He is said to have never taken a bath in his life and instead bathed in the holy waters of Yamuna every day. After his death, a temple was built at the site to commemorate his devotion to the goddess.

Legend about Gangotri

Another part of 4 Dham circuit, Gangotri is located in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand. The town is situated near the sources of the River Ganges and dedicated to Goddess Ganga.
