The Best Solo Vacations to Take in 2024

By Caitlin Morton

Safest Countries in the World Iceland

There used to be a certain stigma around solo vacations , with cruises charging extra for single occupancy and waiters frowning at the words “table for one.” But we're happy to report that the times are a’changing. The world has never been more accommodating to solo travelers—we’re constantly hearing about new meet-up apps to combat loneliness and safety measures to address discomfort (so long, catcalling ).

If you have the will and the way, you can travel just about anywhere by yourself. In fact, these 18 getaways are even better when you go it alone, whether it's a soul-searching hike through Scotland or a pod hotel where, frankly, two’s a crowd. And if you’re still a little anxious about writing up an itinerary by yourself, we’ve gone ahead and suggested travel specialists who can help you out with the more planning-heavy trips.

Check out some of our favorite solo vacations for 2024, and get ready to start loving your own company.

Ireland

Embark a self-guided tour of Ireland

For U.S.-based travelers, Ireland is kind of a no-brainer when it comes to solo travel, thanks to easy access and friendly locals. Travel to the Emerald Isle becomes even easier with Brendan Vacations, a Dublin-based agency dating back to 1969. While they offer traditional group tours, solo travelers should try one of the “locally hosted rail” options: These excursions—including the editor-approved  Ireland’s Sparkling Gems tour—will set you up with hotels, transports (including train rides and chauffeured drives), and one activity per day, but leave you with enough free time to explore on your own. Even better? You’ll be given a 24/7 emergency number and a local guide who will meet you in each city, ready to provide restaurant recommendations, insider tips, and more.

Price: From $2,403 When to go: Open all year How to book:   brendanvacations.com Tap the experts:   Kathleen Sheridan (McCabe World Travel)

Bali

Take a silent retreat in Bali

The Buddhist practice of quietly meditating dates back millennia, but the need for silent reflection in the face of never-ending online chatter is so needed today. There are many hideaways around the world aimed at helping travelers disconnect, but one of our favorites is Bali Silent Retreat . As the name suggests, the retreat involves no talking, no listening to music, just silence and the noises of nature (so really, there wouldn’t be any point in bringing along a travel companion). Nestled in the foothills of the sacred Mount Batukaru volcano and surrounded by rice fields and jungle, this is an especially great choice if you want to completely get away from it all—no phones or internet allowed. Another perk for solo travelers: Accommodations range from women-only dormitories to single rooms and private bungalows.

Price: Housing from $40 to $90 per night; Day Passes (which cover the cost of meals and programs) are $47 When to go: Open all year How to book: balisilentretreat.com Tap the experts: Diane Embree (Bali Barong Tours)

Japan Nine Hours hotel OtemachiImperial Palace

Sleep in Japan’s pod hotels

When there are two pairs of elbows in a tiny hotel room, someone’s bound to get hurt. But a single traveler has more options, like New York’s two Pod Hotels in Midtown. Single rooms have a twin bed, flat-screen TV, free Wi-fi, and…not much else, ideal for propelling you out on the town. In Japan (including various train stations and Tokyo’s Narita Airport), the experience is more extreme: For a low price, you can get a pod bed at Nine Hours for, yes, nine hours—just long enough to rest and shower.

Price: From $30 per nine hours When to go: Early spring or late fall, when the weather is ideal How to book: ninehours.co.jp Tap the experts: Amy Tadehara (InsideJapan Tours)

baby sea turtle in mexico

Rescue turtles in the Mexican Caribbean

People travel alone for many reasons, but not everyone wants to focus on the self. Do your part as an eco-friendly traveler in Quintana Roo, Mexico, where you can join the many local efforts to rescue sea turtles. Most notable is the Akumal Turtle Camp, a program that’s been hosted by the Akumal Ecological Center (CEA) since 1993. The camp invites volunteers to learn about the species with in-class education, turtle monitoring protocols, and species identification before continuing with fieldwork: tagging and protecting nesting females, marking nests with GPS coordinates, and minimizing predators from the nesting sites. Note that the program requires volunteers to commit at least two weeks of their time, so start stocking up on vacation days now.

Price: $180 for two weeks; $350 for four weeks (does not include accommodations) When to go: May to October How to book: ceakumal.org Tap the experts: Zachary Rabinor (Journey Mexico)

Hotel Vartiosaari Finland

Chase the Northern Lights in Finland

Solo travel company Flash Pack launched a collection of new travel experiences in late 2021. One of the most exciting offerings is the “ Finland’s Secret Island ” tour, a four-day journey through Finnish Lapland complete with husky rides, cold-water plunges, and Northern Lights safaris on the back of snowmobiles. At night, you can cozy up at Hotel Vartiosaari , a boutique property located on its own private island in the Kemijoki River. Only up to 18 travelers are allowed to join the group at one time, so you’re guaranteed to make quick friends as you huddle for warmth above the Arctic Circle.

Price: From $3,345 When to go: January to March; November to December How to book: flashpack.com Tap the experts: Jan Sortland (Norwegian Adventures AS)

Switzerland Riviera River Cruises

Set sail on a European river cruise

It’s hard for solo travelers to consider a cruise without first worrying about “single supplements”—the dreaded fees slapped on passengers for booking a room designed to hold two or more people (depending on the trip, those fees can end up tacking on thousands of extra dollars). Luckily, the industry is becoming increasingly accommodating , with cruise lines of all sizes reducing or getting rid of the infamous fees. Riviera River Cruises is one company that specifically caters to solo travelers, with a variety of routes and exclusive departures for solo travelers. Even better? The cruise line has waived the dreaded single supplement on eight of its 2024 itineraries , including routes that visit Burgundy, Paris, and Normandy, as well as Portugal’s Douro Valley.

Price: $2,049 to $4,889 (varies based on trip) When to go: Departure dates available in March, April, July, August, October, and November How to book: rivierarivercruises.com Tap the experts: Angela Turen (Churchill and Turen Ltd.)

Safest Countries in the World Iceland

Drive Iceland’s Golden Circle

Safety is obviously a concern during solo vacations, so you might as well plan a trip to one of the safest countries in the world: Iceland. Fly into Reykjavik , then rent a car and hit the road. Iceland is great for long, soul-seeking drives—and if you go by yourself, you won’t have to annoy fellow passengers when you pull over every five minutes to take photos of waterfalls and glaciers. You can see most of the country along the Ring Road (Route 1), but if you're crunched for time, catch some of southern Iceland’s greatest hits like Thingvellir, Geysir, and Gullfoss, along the Golden Circle route .

Price: Gas is currently $8.82 per gallon in Iceland When to go: Early May, before the summer crowds descend Tap the experts: Chris Gordon (Icepedition)

Rwanda Gorillas

Track gorillas in Rwanda

Yes, a solo safari is possible—and extremely rewarding. There are few better places to recharge and recenter than in the middle of Africa, with only the hotel staff and wild animals to keep you company; plus, some travel companies even have discounted single supplements. In 2019, Singita opened two new properties in Rwanda— Singita Kwitonda Lodge and Kataza House —complete with gorilla trekking expeditions ideal for adventurers traveling alone. You don’t have to worry about having enough travel companions in a group, because regardless of whether you’re alone or traveling with friends, “guests are divided into groups of eight (dependent on their fitness level) where guides take them into the Volcanoes National Park to track gorillas,” Traveler contributor Mary Holland discovered during her solo trip to Rwanda.

Price: Trekking permits are $1,500 per person, per trek; suites start at $2,470 per night When to go: June to September or December 2024, to avoid the rainy seasons How to book: singita.com Tap the experts: Linda Friedman (Custom Safaris)

Getaway cabin

Get away with Getaway

While cabins in the woods tend to conjure up horror-movie memories, Getaway’s cabins are nothing but charming and idyllic—and perfect for solo travelers. The company specializes in boutique rentals in rural areas outside of major hubs like New York, Austin, and Los Angeles, the idea being that people can escape the stress of the city for a long weekend. Expect all the normal creature comforts (a full bathroom, kitchenette, comfortable bed, etc.) as well as cute touches like vintage radios and s’mores kits. The star of every cabin, however, is the giant floor-to-ceiling window adjacent to the bed—perfect for an unplugged vacation that trades Netflix binges for birdwatching and leaf peeping.

Price: From $99 per night When to go: All year How to book: getaway.house

Italian Dolomites

Cycle through the Italian Dolomites

Cycling trips are perfect for lone travelers, giving you plenty of time with your thoughts while still being part of a small group. There are tons of tour operators specializing in bike trips, but try to book with a group that specializes in solo travel—like Trek Travel , a company with experienced guides, plus options to room either by yourself or with an arranged roommate. One of their newest adventures is a five-day ride through the Italian Dolomites, with 220 miles of challenging trails offset by the beauty of the surrounding mountains and glistening lakes. The price of the trip includes hotel accommodations, meals, equipment (including Domane SL 7 bikes), and daily snacks and drinks.

Price: From $1,999 When to go: June to August How to book: trektravel.com Tap the experts: Georgia Yuill (Butterfield and Robinson)

Hurtigruten Antarctica

Escape the noise in Antarctica

Ever since we saw Cate Blanchett sneak off to Antarctica in Where'd You Go, Bernadette? , we've been wondering how possible a solo trip to the frozen continent really is. Turns out, a solo trip is very possible. Contributor Judy Koutsky wrote about her Antarctic cruise , which she claims was best experienced by herself. Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten ensures travelers have enough space without getting lonely, with group excursions and restaurants that allow you to join others' tables. And then there are the quiet moments. Koutsky writes: “Walking among the chinstrap penguins, or taking a scenic zodiac ride where the Gentoo penguins were diving in the water, cruising around massive icebergs, snowshoeing up a hill to get amazing views of humpback whales—it felt so peaceful, so fitting that I was alone.”

Price: From $10,576 When to go: January, March, October How to book: hurtigruten.com Tap the experts: Tim Soper (EYOS Expeditions)

Galapagos sea lion

Walk across the Galápagos Islands

The Galápagos archipelago, off the coast of Ecuador, is one of the world’s most famous destinations for adventure travel . Join a small group of fellow outdoor enthusiasts on this “ Galapagos: In Darwin’s Footsteps ” trip from Exodus Travels , a two-week walking tour that lets you explore 45 miles of the islands on foot. Highlights include hiking up the Sierra Negra Volcano, snorkeling with sea turtles and manta rays, boating past sea lion colonies, and touring the city of Quito on the mainland. With a group size of 6 to 16 people and no mandatory single supplement fees (though if you don’t want to share a room, you can book single rooms for a very minimal fee), this trip is custom-made for solo travelers.

Price: From $8,118 When to go: April to May; October to November How to book: exodustravels.com Tap the experts: Jennifer Gillmore (Travel Beyond)

elephants in Thailand

Visit elephants in Thailand (the responsible way)

While few subjects elicit more impassioned debate than elephant tourism , there are ethical ways to see the gentle giants up close. Travel company Contiki offers a 14-day “ Total Thailand ” trip, covering Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai . (Accommodations range from twin-share hotel rooms to jungle cottages.) The Chiang Mai leg includes a visit to the Elephant Nature Park, a rescue and rehabilitation center that allows visitors to feed the animals without exploiting (or riding) them.

Price: From $2,376 When to go: January to December How to book: contiki.com Tap the experts: Daniel Fraser (Smiling Albino)

Caucasus Mountains georgia best solo vacations 2023

For a true bucket list experience, book a spot in the “ Georgia & Armenia: Ancient Lands of the Southern Caucasus ” tour, a 16-day journey that stretches from Tbilisi down to Yerevan, Armenia. The guided journey includes stops in Borjomi, the cave city of Vardzia, and plenty of monasteries, temples, and wineries in between. You’ll also get to participate in lectures and discussions about sensitive, yet important cultural topics, like the role of women in post-Soviet Georgia and the Armenian genocide.

Belmonds Eastern Oriental Express

Hop aboard the Oriental Express

Long solo train rides and bus trips lend themselves perfectly to reading. Since you aren’t going to be chitchatting with a friend or challenging each other to a game of cards, now’s the opportunity to finally read that book everybody’s been talking about. (Need some recommendations? Check out this list .) And while you can accomplish that on any given Amtrak ride, we suggest taking the ultra-luxurious route—Belmond’s Eastern & Oriental Express throughout Malaysia, to be exact. The brand’s “Wild Malaysia” trip includes guided tours of Penang and Taman Negara National Park, and the iconic train comes with private suites, multi-course meals, and 24-hour concierge service.

Price: From $3,410 When to go: March to October How to book: belmond.com Tap the experts: Tisha Neufville (Neufville Travel)

Scotland

Backpack through the Scottish Highlands

In the crowded Old World, the idea of backpacking is less wild and more cultural. Trek through Scotland on a multi-day trip, and you’ll hardly be alone—you’ll meet farmers as you cross their fields and sleep in small-town inns every night. The 96-mile West Highland Way is probably the most famous hike in the country, taking travelers past the moors and mountains of the Scottish Highlands. You can certainly plan the trek yourself, or let a travel company do it for you— Macs Travels has an 8-day tour that includes daily breakfasts, door-to-door baggage transfers, and accommodation in select B&Bs and guest houses.

Price: From $1,265 When to go: March to October How to book: macsadventure.com Tap the experts: Camilla Davidson (NoteWorthy) or Jonathan Epstein (Celebrated Experiences)

Petra Jordan

Channel your inner Indiana Jones in Jordan

Jordan has all the colorful history, layered archeology, and warm hospitality of its neighboring Middle Eastern countries, with none of the turmoil—meaning the country is a viable option for solo travelers. Instead of planning every detail of a trip to a country that's new to you, book a spot on the “Untold Jordan” trip offered through Flash Pack—a company that specializes in high-end adventures for solo travelers in their 30s and 40s. Highlights of the eight-day tour include riding camels through the Wadi Rum Desert, floating in the Dead Sea, and hiking to the ancient city of Petra.

Price: From $3,095 When to go: February to June; August to December How to book: flashpack.com Tap the experts: Jennifer Barnaby (Kaanect)

Costa Rica

Learn Spanish in Costa Rica

Travel with a buddy abroad, and you’ll revert to English most of the time; go alone, and you’ll be forced to talk the talk. Language immersion vacations can include homestays and hangouts outside of class—and, best of all, they can take place on the beach in Costa Rica . Language school Intercultura offers a variety of Spanish programs for all ages and skill levels (both group and private lessons), which take place in either Heredia City or the school's waterfront campus in Samara Beach.

Price: From $235 per week for classes, $195 per week for homestay immersion When to go: All year except for Costa Rican national holidays How to book: interculturacostarica.com Tap the experts: Pierre Gedeon (Costa Adventures)

DO I NEED TO BE A MILLIONAIRE?!

No way! We believe travel is for everyone! Give us your budget and we will create an itinerary that works for you! Personalized itineraries include all price information so you can see exactly what everything costs and how it adds up for you to stay within your budget. We can include plenty of free activities for you to see your chosen location without racking up the cost! And we have three product options so you can choose how much you want to spend on planning!

CAN'T I DO THIS MYSELF?

You sure can! Many people poll their friends on social media for recommendations that end up being too vague or uninteresting. Then there's the hours upon hours you might spend slogging through travel websites that list the same generic activities, and thousands of hotel listings that start to make your eyes cross! Then there's the hassle of making sure everything is actually feasible to get to within a day and how you're going to get there. We also  make sure to research and include local events and festivals that are happening during your trip dates, so no two vacations look the same!  We are here to create a vacation that you will love without the stress that comes with it! You get your time back and you get to enjoy!

WHY DO I NEED TO BOOK THINGS MYSELF?

The short answer is: TO SAVE YOU MONEY! The long answer is: Because we are not a travel agency, we provide consultation only. We do not provide packages that overcharge you for things you don't want or need. You pay only for the activities you choose to book, and we provide the direct link so that all you have to do is click, enter your information, and you're done! This keeps your financial information safer, and keeps you in control of your trip!

WHEN SHOULD I FIRST CONTACT YOU ABOUT MY TRIP?

Ideally, you should get in touch 4-12 weeks before your trip. Any sooner than that and we can't find the latest happenings to add to your itinerary, ie. festivals and culture days, because city event calendars haven't been published yet. Because we work one-on-one, we take great care to make the best itineraries for you with amazing detail, so itineraries generally take 2-4 weeks to create. If your vacation will be happening sooner than that (who doesn't love spontaneous trips?!), let us know so we can work together to get it to you faster.

WHAT IF I DON'T LIKE MY ITINERARY? CAN I GET A REFUND?

We believe communication is key! If the activities we chose are not to your liking, no problem! You'll get one free edit. Just let us know the activities you don't want, and what else you're looking for. We'll work one-on-one with you to find a great replacement! No refunds are given.

WHAT IF THERE ARE UNEXPECTED ITINERARY CHANGES OR CANCELLATIONS?

We are not responsible for any changes in schedule, whether one of your party becomes ill/injured or if any venue on the itinerary cancels or changes its hours. If a venue cancels after purchasing tickets, making reservations, etc, please get in contact with the venue itself for refunds. (We would be happy to help point you in the right direction.) Additionally, you may want to purchase trip insurance. We have partnered with World Nomads  to offer you travel insurance. Click here for more information.

She provided us with a detailed itinerary with EVERYTHING we needed. Our itinerary was divided up into each city we visited, with an itinerary for each day, transportation methods, recommendations, budget and more. Kris's PDF file itinerary was very user friendly and so easy to just click the link and book. Our trip would not have happened if she didn't help plan everything out. We truly cannot thank her enough for providing us such a wonderful itinerary! We enjoyed every part of our trip thanks to her! I HIGHLY RECOMMEND USING HER!"

Is It Better To Use a Travel Agent or Plan Your Own Vacation?

Jordan Rosenfeld

Depending on how you approach travel, putting together the pieces of a trip can be exciting, or exhausting. Some people love the thrill of finding the best deals on airfare, hotels and destinations, while others want nothing more than to hand it over to a travel agent to do it for them. The question is, do you save more money one way over the other?

In order to find out what might work best for you, we talked to experts about the pros and cons of booking a vacation by yourself or working with a travel agent to help you do it.

Here are some key points to help you make a decision about using a travel agent.

Travel Agents Can Get You the Best Value for Your Buck

Travel agents have experience in shopping for the best value for your travel dollar, said Stephanie Turner of Brentwood Travel . “Just remember–the cheapest price is usually not the best deal. It’s just the cheapest price, and you may end up actually spending a lot more to get what you want.”

Travel Agents Can Save You Time

Booking a trip, with all its working parts, can take hours, especially if you’re researching and comparing the best deals, said Avery Harris of Viking Travel . A travel agent will take much less time to help you find what you’re looking for, Harris said. “We also know seasonal trends, price fluctuations, popularity cycles, and… and how the booking websites’ algorithm models fare changes.”

Letting someone else book your trip for you frees you up to focus on packing and imagining the great time you’ll have.

Travel Agents Can Get You Perks/Amenities

Travel agents often have relationships with partners who provide them with pre-negotiated rates that are better than what you’d get on your own, said Diana Hechler, president of D Tours Travel . “These include amenities such as complimentary breakfast, upgrades when available, and early check-in/late check-out.”

Booking Yourself Puts Your Own Spin on It

While there are some benefits to using a travel agent, Kelli, owner of the travel blog, Vanabond Tales , said, “planning your own trip makes the trip more your own.”

“Easy ways to save money when planning your own trip is to be flexible on your days of travel, travel during the shoulder season, and use a flight aggregator to find the best deals on flights. These few tips will help you get the best deals when booking.”

She also recommends local coupon-based companies such as Groupon for discounts on things such as museum tickets and other activities. Many places also offer discounts when visited on certain days or at certain times which can be found on the specific company website.

Booking Yourself Saves You Money

Deanna Ford, owner of The Detailed Traveler website, points out that travel agents “are for convenience, not cost saving. They receive kick backs, commissions and perks from brands they are partnered with, so you won’t really be getting budget recommendations.”

Thanks to the ease of online booking and searching, Ruby Escalona, who authors the travel blogs, A Journey We Love and Voyage Florida , suggests that it is both easier and more affordable to plan your own vacation. You can use “travel hacks” such as credit card points and miles to save on hotels, flights and other attractions. Staying in Airbnbs can cut the cost of hotels, and you may be able to buy discounted gift cards or use referral credits to book your stay.

Booking Yourself Saves on Service Fees

Anh Le, owner of the travel blog, Luxury under Budget , also finds that booking trips yourself is more likely to save you money if you have the time to put in. “Travel agents have access to the same rates and they don’t get commissions on flights, so they often add an extra booking fee.” Le recommends setting up Google flight alerts to snatch up deals on flights when prices go down. “I have always been able to get flight deals even on big holidays…with this tactic.”

Emily Cuneo, of the travel blog Emily Embarks , agrees that by cutting out the travel agent, “you completely omit the hundreds of dollars in service fees.”

She recommends looking up accommodations through providers such as Expedia, then booking directly with the hotel once you’ve made your selection. “Second, using Skyscanner or Google Flights is a great way to compare prices based on airlines, dates, and layovers.”

Lastly, by avoiding expensive tour groups, travelers can save thousands of dollars by creating their very own walking tour of a city or a road trip around a country, she said.

While there is no right or wrong way to book a trip, knowing how much work you want to put in, and what your goals are, will help you decide.

Let’s Talk About Tour Companies: The Pros and Cons of Booking with a Travel Agency

Everything you need to know about the pros and cons of booking with a tour company in 2024.

So you’re booking a trip – how exciting! You know where you want to go but aren’t sure if you should organise everything yourself or leave it up to the professionals. Well we’ve compiled the pros and cons of booking with a travel agent for you to help you decide the best way to plan your adventure.

What are tour companies?

A tour company (also called a travel agency, tour agency or tour operator) is a business that typically combines and organises accommodation, meals, sightseeing and transportation into a purchasable package. Most countries have a range of tour companies that organise international holidays and trips and provide experts to do some or all of the holiday organisation for you. We’ve used tour companies a fair bit in our travels and wanted to write about what we’ve learned, as well as muse on the pros and cons of booking with a tour company.

A group of tourists gather round some wildlife telescopes pointed at the green canopy.

What do tour companies usually offer?

  • The basics – booking of flights/transfers/accommodation etc.
  • Holiday packages – including the basics as well as meals and facilities etc.
  • Full tour of multiple destinations – flights/transfers/accommodation/food/transport between destinations/day-trips and excursions etc.
  • Guided day-trips – e.g. guided walk or day-trip to and around a destination.
  • Independent day-trips – e.g. bus to and from a location but free to roam when you arrive.

Planning your next trip?

Don’t forget to buy travel insurance! Travel insurance provides extra protection when you travel for a variety of possibilities, from lost luggage to emergency medical care. Buying travel insurance is completely down to the individual, your needs, preferences and trip but it’s important to have in case anything goes wrong. A few of our favourite companies are:

  • SafetyWing – The best travel insurance for digital nomads
  • World Nomads – The best travel insurance for backpackers
  • True Traveller – The best travel insurance for annual multi-trips
  • Go Walkabout – The best travel insurance for working holidays and UK residents

Our favourite tour companies

For day trips:

We’d always recommend doing your research and choosing to support local businesses when you travel. By supporting local tour companies, your money goes back into the community, rather than lining the pockets of an international company, which is a more sustainable way to travel.

If you’re looking for an easy way to find tours and day trips in various locations across the world, we’d recommend checking out Get Your Guide and Viator . Rather than being a tour company themselves, both websites specialise in promoting local businesses and their tours to you. Their prices are affordable, they have a huge range of tours to choose from and they connect you directly with the company, so you have support throughout your booking.

For package holidays:

Our favourite package holiday company for UK travellers is TUI . Featuring a huge variety of destinations, all with exciting activates and excursions, TUI’s holidays are excellent value for money, incredibly affordable and all ATOL-protected, giving you extra protection when you book. We used TUI for our trip to Iceland in 2017, and you can read our thought on the holiday and service here .

There can be a stigma around using a tour company or travel agency. Some people think that if you don’t book your flights, accommodation or excursions independently, or research all the routes yourself that somehow your travel experience is inferior. But this is a really unfounded notion. Actually, tour companies and travel agencies can be really useful and offer a range of benefits for even the most experienced traveller.

Pros of booking with a company

1) they offer personal security.

One of the biggest incentives of booking with a reputable tour company is that they offer you an element of safety . For those who might have less experience travelling or are nervous about navigating new places, a tour company can offer reassurance and a wealth of information about a destination. Booking with a tour company can be a great option for newbie travellers , or even for experienced travellers who just want a little extra security during their trip. This was the case for Lucy when she visited Israel, a country that Western media often portrays as dangerous. Tourist Israel’s guides offered her security to explore a new country, but also an incredible insight into the country, meaning she learned so much about Israel from speaking to locals.

2) They offer financial security

Holiday packages booked in the UK are usually ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s License) protected . This means if the company fails and your holiday can no longer go ahead then you will be entitled to a refund if you are yet to travel, and hotel costs and flights home if you’re abroad. This offers a traveller a great sense of comfort knowing there’s always a contingency plan and their money is safe. ATOL protection rules apply to most travel companies but we would recommend always double checking this before booking your trip and get travel insurance too.

3) You have less responsibility

Not only does the tour company do all the booking and liaising with accommodation etc. for you but they also take on responsibility for your trip in the event of an emergency . If your trip is disrupted (by weather, strikes, cancellations or any other event) it is the tour company’s responsibility to look after you and rebook/rearrange the aspects of your trip that are affected. That being said, it’s important to make sure you book with a reputable company to ensure you’re going to be provided with the right support.

4) The guides are experts

For day trips, tour companies provide knowledgeable guides who can teach you more about a destination than you might learn on your own. All tour companies know the main attractions of a destination and can offer tours that hit those key areas of interest efficiently . On several occasions, like on our trip to Iceland’s Golden Circle , we have remarked how glad we were to have taken a tour as we learned so much more than if we’d done the trip ourselves.

5) It can be cheaper

A tour operator can negotiate prices with other companies to get the best price for each attraction, hotel or flights. This can make booking a package remarkably cheaper than booking all the components yourself. We would still suggest price-comparing across different companies to find the best deal before finalising your booking to make sure you get the best price though.

6) You might have no other choice

Some places are inaccessible to the public or only allow tourists to visit with a guide. There are many areas that require special permits or equipment to access, such as a Demilitarised Zone or Bhutan, where travel can only be done with a registered guide . There are also other sites where it would be extremely dangerous to attempt DIY travel too, like Chernobyl or Antarctica. Without a tour company you wouldn’t be able to visit these parts of the world at all.

7) You can meet new friends

Unless you have chosen a private tour, you will likely have the opportunity to mix with other like-minded tourists . Being thrown together with a random group of people is a great way to kick-start friendships as you undertake an adventure. Booking with a tour company can be a great way for solo travellers to meet new people on the road.

The view of Reykjavik from a TUI plane.

Cons of booking with a tour company

1) tour groups can be too big.

Excursions with a tour group can range from a private 1-on-1 trip, to groups of 50 or more people. If you’re not the type of person who likes environments with lots new people , then these bigger tours might not be for you. They can also mean the tour guide has less attention for individuals or time for questions. It’s worth doing your research before you book to check what size of group each tour will be.

2) They visit attractions at the busiest times

Day tours usually visit attractions at the busiest time of day when lots of other tour groups are there too. This wouldn’t make much of a difference if your package is just flights, transfers and accommodation, however if you have booked daytrips/excursions then this is something to be aware of. If you like to visit an attraction off-peak for a quieter experience it might be worth booking it yourself.

3) They miss out some attractions

Day-trips booked through a tour company will often stick to the most touristy attractions as those are the most popular. This can also be a downside to any traveller who likes to leave the beaten path and explore an area more thoroughly than just the main attractions. If you like to escape the crowds and explore less touristy areas then a tour will not always be the best option.

3) They’re restricted by time

An organised tour typically works on a 9-5 timeframe with pick up after breakfast and drop off before dinner. This can restrict how much time you get to explore an area and can mean you don’t get to stay for the evening too. If you want the freedom to stay for longer in your favourite places then you may not want to be restricted by a tour company’s schedule.

4) The standard of accommodation can vary

This one really depends on who you book with and how reputable they are, but the general rule of thumb is the more you pay the more value you get. Accommodation in cheaper priced packages can sometimes be of a lower standard . Our advice would be to check the hotels that your company is offering on TripAdvisor and read reviews so that you have all the information before choosing what’s right for you.

The Takeaway

Ultimately, travel companies are a great resource and can offer amazing value for money – if you do your research and book the right package.

Our top tips for booking with a tour company:

  • Always price-compare other packages, as well as what you would pay if you did it yourself.
  • If you know what you can get from a destination on your own then you’ll know whether you get more or less value from a tour company.
  • If something’s not clear reach out to the company and ask further questions.
  • Research thoroughly, check reviews and read the Ts&Cs.
  • Always get third-party travel insurance.

Should you book travel yourself vs use a travel agent

The world of travel planning is vast and can be overwhelming. As a traveler, you’re faced with a plethora of decisions before you even step foot on an airplane. One of the most significant decisions is whether to use a travel agent or plan your own trip. Both options have their advantages and disadvantages, and the choice depends on various factors. This comprehensive guide will delve into the details, comparing and contrasting the two methods to help you make an informed decision for your next journey.

Why Work With a Travel Advisor

Travel advisors serve as your personal travel consultants. They bring a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table, ensuring that your trip is as seamless and enjoyable as possible. But what exactly does a travel agent do, and how can they benefit your travel planning process?

Expertise and Knowledge

Travel agents are professionals in the field. They have undergone training and gained experience in all aspects of travel planning, from booking flights and accommodations to arranging tours and activities. They understand the intricacies of the travel industry and have insider knowledge about destinations worldwide. Their expertise becomes particularly useful when planning complex trips involving multiple destinations or modes of transport. They can advise you on the best routes, the most convenient flight schedules, and the most suitable accommodation options, saving you from the daunting task of figuring it all out yourself. Your travel expert would also guide you on when is the best time to visit a destination, hidden gems around where you’d be staying and create a schedule based on your preferences. These key pieces of information and personalization are just a few of the many reasons you’d want to book a trip through a professional travel agent.

Travel agent meeting with clients in their office

Access to Deals and Connections

One of the biggest advantages of using a travel agent is their access to exclusive deals and connections within the travel industry. They often have direct relationships with airlines, hotels, and tour operators, allowing them to secure attractive prices, availability, and perks that you may not find on your own. Whether it’s a room upgrade at a luxury hotel or a discounted rate on a popular tour, a travel agent can provide you with value-added benefits. In fact, some special offers on trips are only made available to travel agents. These offers are made by their travel suppliers, in an effort to grow their relationship. A good travel agent will go the extra mile and notify you of any deals that may come available after you’ve booked and adjust your price as needed.

Personalized Service and Research

A travel agent provides personalized service that you won’t get from an online booking platform. They take the time to understand your preferences and tailor your itinerary accordingly. They are there to answer any questions, address any concerns, and provide advice throughout your journey. Part of the service and research is keeping an eye out on the best flights, tour guides and hotel stays that come available. If you’re going somewhere that happens to be experiencing a high volume of travel. A good agent will keep an eye on a better flight time, hotel/resort room that becomes available or even if a s[pot on a local tour guide opens up. Your advisor keeps an eye on the best options that come available to curate your ideal trip. They work in your best interest to provide incredible travel tips and recommendations, that suit your style.  A good travel advisor will listed to your specific requests and build your trip based on how you like to travel.

Assistance with Rebooking and Cancellations

Travel advisors play a crucial role in providing a hassle-free travel experience, especially in the face of cancellations or disruptions. Unlike navigating the refund and rescheduling policies of airlines and hotels on your own, a travel agent can manage these complexities for you. They are well-versed in handling such scenarios and have established relationships with industry contacts, which often allows them to expedite the rebooking process. Whether it’s a last-minute flight cancellation or a sudden closure of a hotel, your travel advisor will swiftly step in to rebook your travel arrangements, minimizing stress and inconvenience. This ensures that, regardless of unexpected hiccups, your travel experience remains seamless and worry-free.

yourself travel company

The Cost Factor

While travel agents offer numerous benefits, their services aren’t free. Most travel agencies charge a fee for their services, which can vary depending on the complexity of the trip. However, many travelers find that the convenience, expertise, and potential cost savings provided by a travel agent outweigh the cost of their service fee. Many believe in a myth that travel agents will charge an extra booking fee and that they have hidden fees built into their services. This is simply not true, the advisors are compensated by the travel supplier they book with.

Flexible Payment Options

Another compelling advantage of working with a travel agency is the flexibility they offer in terms of payment. Traditional self-booking travel websites methods typically require full payment upfront, which can be a significant financial commitment. Travel agencies, on the other hand, often provide payment plans that allow you to spread out the cost of your trip over time. This means you can secure your bookings with an initial deposit and then make incremental payments leading up to your departure date. This flexibility can make travel more financially accessible and manageable, allowing you to budget for your trip in a way that best suits your personal financial circumstances. It’s important to note that terms and conditions may vary between different agencies, so it’s always wise to discuss payment options with your travel advisor during the planning stage.

The Appeal of DIY Travel Planning

In contrast to using a travel agent, planning your own trip gives you complete control over every aspect of your journey, from the flights you book to the hotels you choose and the activities you plan. This approach has its advantages, but it also requires more effort and time. Let’s break down what DIY travel planning entails.

Freedom and Flexibility

The most significant advantage of DIY travel planning is the freedom and flexibility it provides. You have the liberty to design your itinerary exactly how you want it, exploring options and choosing elements that align with your interests, budget, and travel style.

Someone booking their next trip

Cost Savings

Planning your trip can potentially save you money. Without the additional cost of a travel agent’s fee, you might be able to stretch your budget further. You have the flexibility to shop around for the best deals, wait for prices to drop, or take advantage of last-minute offers.

Personal Satisfaction

There’s a unique sense of satisfaction that comes from planning your own trip. The process of researching destinations, finding hidden gems, and creating your itinerary can be enjoyable and rewarding. Plus, when your well-planned trip goes smoothly, it’s a testament to your effort and planning skills.

The Challenges

However, DIY travel planning isn’t without its challenges. It requires a significant investment of time and effort. You’ll need to do extensive research, compare options, make bookings, and keep track of all the details.

Moreover, if something goes wrong during your trip, you’re on your own. Dealing with flight cancellations, booking errors, or other issues can be stressful and time-consuming without the support of a travel agent.

Travel Agent vs Do It Yourself: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Having explored the roles of travel agents and the ins and outs of DIY travel planning, it’s evident that both have their merits and drawbacks. Your choice between the two will largely depend on your personal preferences, your comfort level with planning, and the type of trip you’re undertaking. With your own vacation, you’ll need to make sure that all the boxes are checked for your trip. This means you’ll be responsible for booking car rentals, a hotel room and return flights. It’s up to you to decide if doing your own research and booking everything is going to bring you the best experience in your next trip.

Travel Agent vs Do It Yourself: Weighing the Pros and Cons

Type of Trip

The complexity of your trip can significantly influence whether you should use a travel agent or plan it yourself. For simple trips, such as a weekend getaway or a direct flight to a single destination, planning yourself can be straightforward and cost-effective. However, for more complex trips involving multiple destinations, transfers, or special arrangements, a travel agent’s expertise can be invaluable. They can handle the logistics, ensure smooth transitions, and use their connections to enhance your travel experience.

Hotel

Travel Agent Booking Your Hotels

A travel agent can leverage their direct relationships with hotels to secure you the best rates, ensure that your preferences are met, and even score you extra perks like complimentary upgrades or breakfast. They can also assist in reservation changes or cancellations, saving you time and effort.

Booking Your Own Hotels

When booking a hotel yourself, you’ll need to research different properties, compare prices, and read reviews to make an informed choice. You’ll also handle any changes, special requests, or issues that arise during your stay.

Cruise Lines

Travel agent booking your cruise.

Travel agents often have excellent relationships with cruise lines, which can lead to discounted rates and exclusive packages. They can assist you in selecting the best cabin based on your preferences, help you understand the inclusions and exclusions in your package, and handle any changes or cancellations in your itinerary.

DIY Your Cruise

Booking a cruise on your own requires a good understanding of the various cabin categories, dining options, and onboard amenities. You’ll also need to closely monitor any changes in sailing dates or routes, and handle any issues or special requests directly with the cruise line.

Cruise

Travel Agent Book Your Flight

Travel agents can save you hours of time by finding the best flight schedules, connections, and fares. They can also navigate the complex airline policies in case of cancellations or rescheduling. If you have a multi-destination itinerary, a travel agent can expertly piece together the flights for the most efficient and cost-effective route.

Booking Your Own Flight

Booking flights on your own involves researching different airlines, comparing fares, understanding baggage policies, and selecting suitable flight times. In the event of cancellations or delays, you’ll need to handle rescheduling or refunds yourself. If managing multiple flights and connections, you’ll need to ensure the timings line up, providing enough time for transfers.

Time and Effort

Your availability and willingness to invest time and effort into travel planning is another crucial factor. If you enjoy the process of researching and organizing your trip, the DIY approach might be for you. However, if you’re pressed for time or find the task daunting, a travel agent can take the burden off your shoulders. For day trips, scheduling your own travel arrangements would save you time and effort. This is especially true with weekend business trip that don’t require much effort or time.

Special Requests

If you have specific needs or requests, such as dietary requirements, accessibility needs, or unique experiences, a travel agent can ensure these are catered to. They can liaise with airlines, hotels, and tour operators to make the necessary arrangements, ensuring your needs are met.

Access to Deals and Upgrades

While you can find deals and discounts on your own, a travel agent’s industry connections can often lead to better offers. They may have access to exclusive rates, special packages, or value-added benefits like room upgrades or complimentary extras. When trying to find deals yourself, you’ll have to keep an eye out for a package deal, create notifications through Google flights and subscribe to various email lists. Just to get the lower price and cheap flight options that come available.

Peace of Mind

Finally, using a travel agent offers peace of mind. They provide support and assistance throughout your journey, helping you navigate any issues that arise. For less experienced travelers or those who prefer having a safety net, this can be a significant advantage.

Making the Best Choice for Your Travel Needs

In conclusion, the decision between using a travel agent and planning your own trip isn’t a one-size-fits-all answer. It depends on various factors, including your personal preferences, the nature of your trip, and your comfort level with travel planning. Whichever method you choose, the goal is to create a memorable travel experience that suits your needs and desires. By understanding the pros and cons of each approach, you can make an informed decision that leads to a rewarding and enjoyable adventure. Remember, travel is about exploration and enjoyment. Whether you choose to use a travel agent’s expertise or embrace the challenge of DIY planning, the journey is just as important as the destination. Happy travels!

Choosing between working with a travel advisor or booking your own trip

Travel agents offer expertise, convenience, and support throughout your travel journey. They can handle complex itineraries, make special arrangements, provide access to exclusive deals, and offer assistance if any issues arise during your trip.

DIY travel planning gives you full control over your itinerary, allowing you to tailor your trip to your interests, budget, and travel style. It can also potentially save you money, as you’re not paying an agent’s fee, and can shop around for the best deals.

You might want to consider using a travel agent for complex trips involving multiple destinations or transfers, or if you have special requirements. They can also be beneficial if you’re short on time or find the task of travel planning daunting.

The decision depends on various factors, like your personal preferences, the type of trip, and your comfort level with travel planning. Consider the pros and cons of each approach to make an informed decision that suits your needs.

How to Best Decide Between Guided Tours vs Independent Travel

Table of Contents

Europe is a stunning continent. With countries rich in culture, art, tradition, and culinary experience, it is a prime destination for anyone seeking an escape from the mundanity of his/her everyday life. However, while planning a trip, you are faced with the pressing question: planning your trip with one of the guided tours vs independent travel? Each has its advantages, but ultimately it is your preferences that determine what is best for you. If you are confused about which is best for you, read the comparison below to get a fair idea.

It goes without saying that a DIY trip or independent travel always allows you more freedom. Since you are the one who makes and fixes your schedule, you get to control every aspect of it. Therefore, you can adjust it according to your preferences, special conditions, etc. Planning a trip yourself also means that you get to decide which and how many places you visit. For example, you might be on a tight budget and cannot afford to visit pricier destinations, like The Louvre in Paris , but instead want to keep everything low-key. Or you might not be interested in seeing certain monuments, but they are nevertheless part of the tour package. Or you want to maximally benefit from your trip and see as many sites as possible. As it may be obvious, you will have to compromise if you are not in charge.

However, this also does not mean that a guided-tour strips you of all freedom of decision-making. Firstly, there are a plethora of guided tours that you can choose from, based on your preferences. Since there are tens of reputed formal groups functioning in the business, it is not impossible to find one that closely resembles your demands. Secondly, guided tours rarely take all day. In fact, you are with your group for the quarter to half of the day at most. You can innovate and decide what to do with the rest of your time!

yourself travel company

Traveling independently means that you are on your own and must take care of all logistics without guidance, from finding the flight tickets to booking the best hotels to finding the right commuting services such as train , bus , or car rental to pre- booking tickets to sites and monuments . Often, individuals, owing to a lack of local knowledge, fail to make the best decisions for themselves and get stuck in unfortunate circumstances. For example, one might not know that destinations like the Sagrada Familia and the Anne Frank House require reservations, makes special trips to the places, and get turned away! Such issues are non-existent when it comes to guided tours, for the company catering to you deals with all these matters timely and effectively. All you have to do is to enjoy.

However, it is not to say independently traveling is impossible. Not only is it doable, but for some people, this planning and catering to teeny-tiny details of traveling is also part of the fun. It is an exciting prospect for them and something they look forward to. So, if you are one such individual, you should not shy away from independently traveling.

yourself travel company

There is no definite answer to this question because there are many different kinds of touring companies available. While some guided tours may be more expensive than others, focusing on pricier sites, featuring lavish hotels, etc., others are easier on the pocket.

If you are on a budget, you can allocate finances such that you skip expensive sites and focus on what really interests you. However, one thing that holds regardless is that all payments you make to them are made in advance. This entails that everything is covered and prepaid, including tickets to sites, hotels, etc. This is particularly helpful for individuals who struggle with budgeting and tend to overspend needlessly.

There are good reasons to contend that traveling with tour guides is comparatively safer. Although crime rates in Europe are generally low, and you will have to be extremely unfortunate to run into violent crimes, petty offenses like pickpocketing are common. This is especially the case at popular, touristy destinations. Under such circumstances, traveling in packs is beneficial, as it wards off unwanted advances and attention. Plus, travel guides are also familiar with the local landscapes and know what neighborhoods to avoid.

Therefore, exploring cities with them is like taking preemptive measures. However, as mentioned above, crime rates are not extremely high in European countries and are therefore regarded as generally safe. So, there is no real threat if one researches and avoids shady areas.

Communication

yourself travel company

Although European countries have an overall higher index of English-speaking citizens, you will nevertheless face problems traveling inland cities or villages. For example, if you are traveling in Malaga and are relying only on English, you will undoubtedly run into language barriers.

Under such circumstances, it helps to have someone who speaks the language by your side to simplify matters. If language is a major issue for you and you believe that you cannot navigate without aid, you might want to book trips with a tour guide. Elsewise, a DIY trip is just as good and has no other benefits in this domain.

General Conclusion

yourself travel company

Both DIY trips and guided tours have their perks. Planning your own trip vs. tour company is an argument that has no objective answer. Typically speaking, if you are a first-time traveler who is unsure of how things unfold while one is visiting European cities and are afraid that you won’t be able to manage finances and logistics efficiently, you should go for a guided tour.

Doing so is not only convenient but also very insightful. If your ultimate goal is to break the shackles of travel groups, gaining experience by initially being a part of one is an excellent idea. It gives you the necessary exposure while keeping you in a safe space. On the other hand, if you are confident and determined to travel on your own, do not hesitate to do so! The world is yours, and nothing is stopping you from exploring the gorgeous destination that Europe is.

Don’t Want to Choose Between Guided Tours vs Independent Travel? Try the Hybrid Option !

Using a travel agent vs. booking yourself: what’s best?

Pros of using a travel agent.

  • Connect you with trusted tour operators they’ve worked with before
  • Find the perfect airfares, rental cars, and cruise ships/cruise lines to fit your itinerary
  • Help you save money with exclusive upgrades, discounts, and perks that aren’t available to the general public
  • Offer personalized service and peace of mind
  • Help you organize a group trip or family trip that meets all travelers’ requirements, saving you time and effort
  • Manage trip cancellations and changes, and find flexible fares that fall within your budget

Cons of using a travel agent

  • Less convenient - Many travel agents only offer services during certain limited office hours. On the other hand, by booking online, you can make your bookings any time you want. Some travel booking sites also offer 24/7 customer support.
  • Biased advice - Travel agents earn commissions from hotel operators and airlines, so they have an incentive to push you towards booking flights or hotels that they choose.
  • Limited choice - Many travel agencies, especially small consumer-facing agencies, have limited inventories. Online, you’ll find a wide variety of different travel products and tour operators to choose from.
  • More expensive - Travel agencies often charge large booking fees for their services.
  • Lack of flexible payment options - Some types of travel agencies, such as business travel management companies, ask all their clients to sign a rigid one-year contract with complicated fine print.

what is solo travel like

Have you ever dreamt of exploring the world on your own terms? Imagine the freedom of wandering off the beaten path, discovering hidden gems, and getting to know yourself better in the process. Solo travel is not just a trend, but a life-changing experience that allows you to step out of your comfort zone and embrace new cultures, languages, and adventures. In this article, we delve into the why, how, and what of solo travel, inspiring you to embark on your own unique journey of self-discovery and exploration. So fasten your seatbelt, as we take you on an exhilarating ride through the world of solo travel.

What You'll Learn

Benefits of solo travel, challenges of solo travel, tips for solo travelers, personal experiences of solo travelers.

quartzmountain

Solo travel has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. It offers a unique and transformative experience that is hard to find when traveling with others. While traveling alone may seem intimidating at first, the benefits and freedom that come with it are worth it. Here are some of the top benefits of solo travel.

  • Independence and Self-discovery: Traveling alone allows you to truly be in control of your own journey. You get to choose where to go, what to do, and how long to stay. This independence allows for self-discovery and personal growth. You learn to trust your instincts, make decisions on your own, and become more self-reliant. This newfound independence can be empowering and boost your confidence.
  • Flexibility and Spontaneity: When you travel alone, you don't have to conform to anyone else's schedule or preferences. You can change your plans on a whim, stay longer in a place if you love it, or move on if you're not enjoying it. This flexibility and spontaneity make your trip more exciting and unpredictable. It allows you to go with the flow and embrace unexpected opportunities or adventures that may arise.
  • Cultural Immersion and Connection: Traveling alone gives you the opportunity to fully immerse yourself in the local culture. Without the comfort of companionship, you are more likely to interact with locals and engage in authentic cultural experiences. You can try local cuisines, visit off-the-beaten-path attractions, and participate in cultural events or festivals. This type of immersion and connection with the local community can deepen your understanding of the place you're visiting and create lifelong memories.
  • Self-reflection and Relaxation: Solo travel provides a unique space for self-reflection and relaxation. Without the distractions of daily life and the demands of companions, you have more time and space to reflect on your thoughts, goals, and dreams. It's an opportunity to disconnect from the outside world and focus on yourself. You can take long walks on the beach, meditate in nature, or simply enjoy a meal alone while taking in your surroundings. This solitude can be incredibly rejuvenating and give you a fresh perspective on life.
  • Personal Empowerment and Growth: Traveling alone can be challenging at times, but it also pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you grow as an individual. You learn to navigate unfamiliar environments, adapt to different cultures, and overcome obstacles on your own. This sense of accomplishment and personal empowerment can have a lasting impact on your life. You become more resilient, open-minded, and adaptable, which are valuable qualities that can be applied to all areas of your life.

Solo travel can be an incredibly rewarding experience, allowing you the freedom to explore new destinations at your own pace. However, it also comes with its fair share of challenges that you should be prepared for. In this article, we will explore some of the most common challenges of solo travel and provide tips on how to overcome them.

  • Loneliness: One of the biggest challenges of solo travel is the feeling of loneliness that can creep in at times. Without someone to share your experiences with, it can be easy to feel isolated, especially during quiet evenings or meals. To combat this, try staying at social hostels or guesthouses where you can meet other travelers. Participating in group tours, activities, or joining online travel communities can also help you connect with like-minded individuals.
  • Safety concerns: Traveling alone can sometimes make you more vulnerable to potential safety risks. Without a companion, you may attract more attention from pickpockets or scam artists. To mitigate this, always stay alert, particularly in crowded areas or at night. Research the safety reputation of your destination beforehand and avoid traveling alone in sketchy neighborhoods. It's also a good idea to inform someone back home about your travel plans and check in with them regularly.
  • Decision making: When you're traveling alone, you're solely responsible for making all the decisions, which can be overwhelming at times. From choosing accommodations and activities to planning your itinerary, the burden of decision making can be exhausting. To alleviate this challenge, plan your itinerary in advance, but also keep some flexibility. Prioritize the attractions or experiences you want to have, but allow room for spontaneous activities. Consider using a travel app or guidebook for recommendations, and don't be afraid to ask locals for suggestions.
  • Self-reliance: Being self-reliant is a necessary skill for solo travelers, as you won't have anyone else to rely on in unfamiliar situations. This includes managing your transportation, navigating unfamiliar places, and handling emergency situations. Before your trip, familiarize yourself with the local transportation options, download offline maps, and carry emergency contact information. It's also a good idea to learn a few basic phrases in the local language to help you communicate with locals if needed.
  • Single supplement charges: Many hotels and tour operators charge a single supplement fee for solo travelers, which can significantly increase the cost of your trip. To avoid or minimize these fees, consider staying in budget accommodations such as hostels or guesthouses that often offer dormitory-style rooms. Look for tour operators that offer shared group tours or activities, or consider connecting with other solo travelers to split costs. Booking in advance or during off-peak seasons can also help you find better deals.
  • Missing out on shared experiences: While solo travel allows you the freedom to do what you want when you want, it can sometimes mean missing out on shared experiences with a travel companion. Celebrating a beautiful sunset or sharing a delicious meal may feel less enjoyable without someone to share it with. To counteract this, be open to meeting new people and engaging with locals. Strike up conversations with fellow travelers, join group activities or classes, and be open to invitations from locals.

Solo travel is a unique and empowering experience, despite its challenges. By being prepared, staying vigilant, and seeking out connections, you can overcome these challenges and make the most of your solo adventure. Embrace the opportunity to learn and grow, and you may find that solo travel becomes an incredibly rewarding and enriching way to explore the world.

The Unconventional Travel Methods of Minor League Teams Revealed

Traveling alone can be an incredibly rewarding experience. It allows you to explore new places on your own terms, meet new people, and discover more about yourself. However, it's important to remember that solo travel can also come with its own set of challenges. To help make your solo adventure a smooth and enjoyable one, here are some tips for solo travelers:

Research and plan ahead:

Before embarking on your solo trip, spend some time researching your destination. Familiarize yourself with the local customs, traditions, and laws. Research the best areas to stay in, the local transportation options, and any safety concerns. Having a well-thought-out plan can help you feel more confident and prepared.

Stay connected with loved ones:

While solo travel is all about independence, it's crucial to stay connected with friends and family back home. Inform them about your itinerary and update them regularly on your whereabouts. This not only helps you stay safe, but it also brings peace of mind to your loved ones.

Pack light and be organized:

One of the perks of solo travel is that you have complete control over your luggage. Pack light, bringing only the essentials. This will make it easier for you to move around and navigate through different locations. Being organized will also save you time and stress during your trip.

Trust your intuition:

As a solo traveler, it's important to listen to your instincts and trust your gut feeling. If something or someone feels off, it's better to remove yourself from the situation than to take unnecessary risks. Your intuition can be a valuable tool for keeping yourself safe while traveling alone.

Be open to meeting new people:

Although solo travel gives you the freedom to explore on your own, it doesn't mean you have to be alone the entire time. Be open to meeting new people, whether it's fellow travelers or locals. Engaging in conversations and making connections can enhance your travel experience and even lead to lifelong friendships.

Learn basic phrases of the local language:

Learning a few basic phrases of the local language can go a long way in solo travel. It shows respect to the local culture and can help you navigate through daily interactions, such as ordering food, asking for directions, or bargaining in markets. People are often more likely to help you if they see you making an effort to communicate in their language.

Stay aware of your surroundings:

Solo travelers are more vulnerable to potentially dangerous situations, so it's crucial to stay aware of your surroundings at all times. Stay vigilant, especially in crowded places or unfamiliar areas. Avoid walking alone late at night, and be cautious of your personal belongings. Trust your instincts and take necessary precautions to ensure your safety.

Embrace solitude:

Solo travel can provide a unique opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth. Embrace moments of solitude and take the time to enjoy your own company. Whether it's sitting on a park bench, reading a book, or exploring a new hiking trail, these moments can be incredibly rewarding and rejuvenating.

Take care of yourself:

Lastly, take care of yourself physically and emotionally during your solo journey. Get enough sleep, eat well, and stay hydrated. Travel can be exhausting, and it's crucial to prioritize your well-being. Also, don't be too hard on yourself if things don't go according to plan – adaptability is key when traveling alone.

In conclusion, solo travel can be an incredible adventure full of self-discovery and personal growth. By following these tips for solo travelers, you can make the most out of your trip while ensuring your safety and enjoying memorable experiences along the way. So, pack your bags, embrace the unknown, and embark on a solo journey of a lifetime!

Is Traveling by Boat Safe During Pregnancy?

Solo travel is a unique and thrilling experience that allows individuals to explore the world on their own terms. It is a chance to step out of your comfort zone, embrace new cultures, and discover the inner adventurer within you. In this article, we will delve into the personal experiences of solo travelers and share their insights and tips for making the most out of your solo journey.

One of the first things solo travelers discover is the freedom that comes with not having to compromise on the itinerary. When you travel alone, you have no one else to cater to or coordinate with, meaning you have complete control over your schedule. This allows you to be spontaneous and indulge in activities that may not have been possible when traveling with companions.

Solo travel also offers an opportunity for self-reflection and personal growth. Being in a foreign country with no familiar faces can be intimidating at first, but it pushes you out of your comfort zone and helps you discover your true strengths and capabilities. You learn to rely on yourself and become more self-sufficient, gaining confidence and independence along the way.

Moreover, solo travel provides ample opportunities to meet new people and make meaningful connections. When you are alone, you are more likely to engage with locals and fellow travelers, sparking interesting conversations and creating lasting friendships. Many solo travelers find that the memories they make and the connections they forge are some of the most valuable aspects of their journey.

Safety is a top concern for anyone considering solo travel, and it is important to exercise caution in unfamiliar surroundings. Solo travelers often suggest researching your destination beforehand, familiarizing yourself with local customs and practices, and staying vigilant and aware of your surroundings. It is also advised to share your travel plans with friends and family and stay connected with them throughout your journey.

To make the most out of your solo travel experience, it is crucial to step outside your comfort zone and be open to new experiences. Try local cuisines, explore off-the-beaten-path destinations, and engage in activities that push your boundaries. Remember, this is your journey, and you have the power to create unforgettable memories and discover hidden gems.

Lastly, solo travel may come with its challenges, but it is ultimately a rewarding and transformative experience. It allows you to grow as an individual, gain new perspectives, and build resilience. So, if you have been considering embarking on a solo adventure, don't hesitate any longer. Embrace the unknown, pack your bags, and get ready for a journey of a lifetime. Happy travels!

FAR AND WIDE: 10 Best Trafalgar Tours to Take in 2024

Because Trafalgar’s customer base is international, tour participants are likely to be English-speaking citizens of a variety of countries—a plus for North Americans who would enjoy traveling with people from all over the globe. A travel director accompanies each tour group and coordinates with local tour guides at each destination. Many of the travel directors have five years’ experience or more.

Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Optional experiences on each tour cost extra but also offer the flexibility to create your own custom tour: You may opt out of the activity and choose to do something else—or just relax.

Tauck aims to appeal to people of all ages by offering land journeys, European river cruises, small ship ocean cruises, and multi-generational “Tauck Bridges” family travel. Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), part of the Grand Circle Corporation since 1978, focuses on active travelers over 50 who are looking for hands-on experiences in destinations around the world. The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

All of its senior-focused tours include guidance and lectures by Road Scholar faculty who are experts on topics relevant to the destination. Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. The “Choose Your Pace” feature allows you to choose among multiple options of tour length, challenge, and pace. Extended-stay programs range from eight days in Florence to 45 days in southern Spain.

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks that other tour companies charge extra for.

It offers specialized land journeys, active outdoor journeys, small ship cruises, and cultural stays. At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. Tours include culturally immersive experiences like visits to homes, meals with locals, and demonstrations of local crafts and cuisines. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) • Destinations: 130 itineraries on seven continents (with an emphasis on Europe).
  • How to Book: Directly through Smithsonian Journeys or through a travel agent such as AAA .

Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

  • Destinations: More than 50 countries on six continents.
  • How to Book: Directly through Globus ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar , all which are tour specialist OTAs; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

Founded in 1988 in Australia and now employee-owned, Intrepid Travel offers 1,100 escorted tours worldwide, with an average of 10 travelers per tour. The company focuses on small group active trips off the beaten track. Its tours often use public transportation and stay at locally owned accommodations.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. 8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

Quick Facts about Cruises for Seniors with Viking

  • Passenger limit on river boats: 190 people  (up to 930 on ocean ships)

  • Destinations: Mostly Europe for river tours, also cruises on the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong Rivers; expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Great Lakes; ocean cruises to various destinations.
  • How to Book: Directly through Viking ; via CruiseCritic ; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

9 Effective Ways to Market Your Travel Agency

Written by: KHM Staff on December 14, 2017

yourself travel company

Marketing your business to your clients is an important part of being a travel agent. Managing your social media accounts, website, CRM, blogs, and emails, plus staying on top of new travel deals and booking your clients–there’s always so much to do!

Are your efforts bringing in the business that you hoped for? When looking at your marketing plan for the year, consider adding one or more of these ideas into the mix.

Practice your 30-second commercial.

Often called an “elevator speech,” this is your opportunity to explain your business in a succinct message. Whether you’re walking into the grocery store or attending your child’s school function, you’re bound to bump into someone you know. Having your 30-second commercial  prepared is essential to marketing your travel agency stumbling over the words to explain it each time. Attending Boot Camp at our corporate office will help you perfect your pitch.

Create a monthly email newsletter.

Developing a short email sent from myTravelCRM or Mailchimp is an easy, efficient way to keep in contact with your clients. Your newsletter content should focus on the current travel season. Whether it’s engagement season, summer break, or time to deck the halls, email your clients on a consistent basis to give them travel ideas and tips for all occasions! KHM Travel Agents can utilize email templates in myTravelCRM for more content ideas.

Add variety to your social media posts.

Inspire your followers with content based on new travel deals, industry news, packing tips, destination highlights, and holiday posts! Add life to your with these suggestions:

  • Consider setting up a theme for each day to help with consistency.  For example, Travel Tip Tuesday.
  • Share eye-catching photos from your own travel or from supplier websites and include short, attention-grabbing captions .
  • Subscribe to emails from travel publications like Travel + Leisure and Travel Weekly to share their news articles to your pages.
  • Subscribe to travel agent supplier Facebook pages for shareable contact posted regularly.
  • Look on Pinterest for packing must-haves to share on your pages!
  • Search suppliers’ YouTube channels and share interesting, informational videos to your page. Be sure you are using supplier content and not the content of other travel agents.
  • KHM Travel Group Agents can read  Agent Access Weekly emails to learn about the newest travel deals. Post about the latest sales by pairing your content with appropriate graphics or supplier resources !

Scheduling posts is a great way to make sure you are consistent.

Set up a booth at a local trade show or fair.

Find the perfect trade show by checking your local chamber of commerce, event center schedule, fairgrounds, or even call your nearest mall to set up a table or booth during a specific time. Broadcasting your business to potential clientele is the best way to amp up your leads list. KHM Travel Group has tips to prepare our agents to work a tradeshow .

ways-to-market-referral-program

Start a referral program.

Marketing by word of mouth requires minimum effort and is low-cost! Boost your sales by asking your clients to refer a friend to your travel business or to simply keep you in mind when someone mentions travel. Add an extra incentive with a referral program. Gift cards are a great way to reward clients for referrals.

Do a giveaway.

Giving out items with your travel agency’s information creates wide, visual exposure for your business. Think of low-cost giveaways that your clientele would enjoy and possibly use while traveling. We suggest visiting 4imprint to brainstorm ideas.

ways-to-market-travel-gear

Advertise locally.

From bulletin ads to newspapers to pizza boxes, there are advertising opportunities everywhere. Putting your business name, logo, and contact information out publicly lets others know that your services are available and can boost your public relations image . Since some ideas will be more of an investment than others. Start small by putting an ad in the local school directory or your church bulletin and see if the response meets your expectations.

Send direct mail to your clients.

Every day your clients come home to a mailbox full of bills, newspapers, and the occasional note from grandma. Add a little variety and a personal touch to your client communications by sending them something from their favorite travel agent! For special occasions like birthdays, holidays, anniversaries, or congratulations for a life event, consider hand-writing a card or letter.

Don’t forget to put a “travel” spin on your message.  For example, in an anniversary card add, “During these special times, couples often plan an anniversary trip, renewal of their vows, or just a romantic getaway as a celebration of their love. [YourAgencyName] will plan the perfect time for you and your spouse, so you can focus on each other. If I can be of any assistance to you, please contact me.”

The Engagement program through Travel Leaders Network is another great resource for low cost, professional looking, direct mail marketing.

ways-to-market-travel-night

Plan a travel night.

By hosting a travel night, clients can learn more about a specific destination, tour or cruise. If you choose, you can even offer an exclusive booking incentive. Host this night in your home, event space, or restaurant depending on the number of attendees. Supplier BDMs are great resources to tap into when planning a travel night.

Keeping in contact with your clients is crucial to developing your business. When developing your marketing plan, keep an eye out for creative ideas that will attract your target audience. Be consistent with your timing, your message, and use the tools available to you through your host agency.

Elevator Pitch Examples: A Travel Agent Approach

Looking for some elevator pitch examples for travel agents? We've got 'em. 🙂

Half (if not more) of working as a travel agent is sales. Every agent knows the importance of customer service––going the extra mile and booking a flawless trip so first-time clients become lifetime clients. But generating sales can be a great pain point for some agents, and it’s not likely your love of sales is what attracted you to the industry. (Who am I to say?) But how do you set yourself apart from other agents in the ever-growing travel industry?

If you’re a travel agent, chances are you’ve heard that you are your brand. That you need to sell yourself as much as (if not more than) you need to sell your product. And today we’re going to chat about what is popularly known as “the elevator pitch,” but what I prefer to refer to as “introducing yourself in an interesting way.”

Tick tock. Let’s not waste time, shall we?

The Elevator Pitch.

You Are a Special Snowflake. Yes, You. Before you shout out to the world about your awesome travel agent skills, take a moment to think about what your personal story is. When you’re selling travel, you have to sell yourself first. Gross right? But it really doesn’t have to be. Just because you’re “selling yourself” doesn’t mean you have to pretend to be someone else.

Coming up with your own elevator pitch examples (a 45-second spiel about who you are and what you do) can sound really intimidating. If you’re an introvert like me, this is extra helpful because the talking points will help you feel confident in introducing yourself to others.

But equally important to tell people what you do is to express your passion for the industry in a genuine way. For example, the HAR team expresses their passion very differently from one another, and that’s okay. For your reference:

Steph, Mary, and Bridget Bitmojis

Bitmojis aside, what I’m talking about here is not your average sales pitch. We all know that in the travel industry, you must first make a personal impression before you can zoom in for the sale. So rather than trying to pitch a product, what I’m talking about here is pitching YOURSELF as a travel professional.

It will be the hook to make the supplier and client want to know what you have to offer. So let’s get going.

Elevator Pitch Examples from Real Travel Agents

Step 1: getting personal.

When people open their mouths and spew out brilliance, it seems easy and effortless, but the truth is it takes work and crafting. Likely it seems effortless because they’ve done it a bazillion times and put some thought into it.

If you do put thought into “pitching yourself,” then you will make a more memorable impression and when you follow up by handing them your business card, they’ll be more likely to remember you. So let’s look at some elevator pitch examples:

First, let’s get personal:

  • What is my personal connection to travel/ the travel industry? i.e. I work for my family-owned host agency that was established in 1974.
  • Why do I love travel? i.e. I saved up all my babysitting money for four years to travel to Italy with my grandparents, and I’ve been in love with culturally immersive travel ever since.
  • What do I love about selling travel? i.e. Putting together a great FIT is like a logic puzzle for me, and I love the challenge of customizing flawless vacations for clients.
  • What formative experience(s) impacted my decision to become a travel agent? i.e. Quite honestly, I had a horrible travel experience with an agent that did not qualify us for a trip, and I ended up being the one to fill in the potholes. I ended up having a ton of fun and wanted to bring that level of service and integrity to the industry.
  • What’s my favorite thing about working with my clients? i.e. I absolutely love to see my client’s reactions after their trips! When they come back looking ten years younger, I know I did a good job.
  • What kind of travel experience do I want them to have? i.e. I want my clients to discover something about themselves they didn’t know before they traveled!
  • What is something that makes me unique as a person? I want to elaborate on this one because in my discussions with agents there are memorable details that come to mind:
  • Nikki Miller from Travel with Nikki told me she had visited Disney World more times than years she’s been alive. Whoa.
  • Lori Zeller of Travel Leaders, Apple Valley once mentioned to me that her goal was to visit every MN state park in one year, and I thought that was really cool (especially since, at the time, she was beginning to expand her niche to include more adventure travel).
  • Ron Hashman of Harshman Travel mentioned to me he works directly with an executive of a cruise line after he once introduced himself to her at a conference. Did I believe him when he told me he received a good rate for his clients for one of their cruise itineraries? You bet.

My favorite things about these elevator pitch examples (which are just a few that come to mind) are that the agents weren’t trying to sell me anything. Heck, they weren’t even trying to impress me. They were just being themselves.

So what is unique about you? I just came back from Cruise360 and maybe you’re an agent that has videos of suites from more than 20 different ships (I know some of you do!) Think of a fun fact or detail about yourself that you can put forward.

Step 2: Just the Facts

Then you’ll want to mix those intangibles with a piece of concrete data. Here are a few elevator pitch examples to get you going:

  • How many years of experience do you have selling travel? i.e. 15 (Are you a newbie and worried about it? Just tell them you have 1 year of experience going on 15 😉).
  • What is your niche/ travel interest? i.e Adaptive adventure travel with an emphasis on Southeast Asia.
  • What certification/training do you have? i.e. I have my ECC through CLIA. I’m a South Africa specialist.
  • What’s one piece of data you can give on clients/ client satisfaction? i.e. 90% of my clients are first-time travelers, and 95% of those clients say they will travel again. (Psst! Are you wondering how you can track something like this? Check out our "Vacation in Review" form here! )
  • What huge obstacle have you helped a client overcome? No joke, sometimes when a travel agent goes the extra mile, they can save a life . Hopefully, your services won’t need to extend that far but think of one way you’ve really helped a client through a major issue, whether it be rebooking, offering them extra perks, or helping them out with a Visa/Passport bind.

Step 3: Shorter is Sweeter

Now of course, after you brainstorm on these questions, you won’t be able to fit them all into your talking points. But you can mix and match from the brainstorming you did above! Which details do you think are the most engaging? You’ll want to boil this down into about three sentences:

  • Who you are, what you do. i.e. I’m a CLIA ECC certified travel agent, with fifteen years of experience selling river cruises.
  • What makes you unique as an agent: i.e I was inspired to sell river cruises when my spouse and I renewed our vows on an Avalon Cruise in the Danube, and my goal is to pass along the impact of those memories to my clients.
  • Engage them with a question. What is one of your most memorable travel experiences?

Now that wasn’t so scary, was it? Just practice in front of a mirror. And don’t be afraid to brag about yourself a little. You worked hard and you earned it, okay? Be proud!

Step 4: Putting it All Together

Now just mash those sentences together into something that sounds cohesive (usually it will work just to string them together).

Practice it with your friends, or your dog, or at your own face in front of the mirror a bunch of times. Can you get through it in about 45 seconds? Does it need to be shorter? A little longer? Try out a few of your elevator pitch examples on your friends and see which one they like best.

This is Good Info, Can I Do Anything Else with it?

Why yes you can. After spending all that time researching elevator pitch examples, you need to use it to the utmost! You have great info in your elevator pitch so you might as well get as much mileage from it as you can, so here are a few ideas of other ways you can use this info:

  • Have it at the ready when someone on FB inquires for a travel agent. Yes, this happens sometimes! When someone in a group or FB page asks a group of agents if they know a good agent, well that agent is YOU. Don’t say just say, call me. Say, I’m a Disney-certified specialist who’s been to WDW 36 times. I’d love to touch base and help you with your trip! The more specific you are, the more you will set yourself apart.
  • Include some of it in your bio on your website and social media pages: Is your “about us” description in need of a little spruce up? If you have to wonder, chances are it is. This is a great way to infuse some of your personality, individuality and voice into what might be an otherwise dry description.
  • You use the info in a  Onesheet for a booth at a trade show , or to leave with a donation if your agency is involved with a local charity event. This provides a little more info than your business card can (but of course you can leave those too!).
  • Include the information in your email signature!

A Handy Dandy Worksheet!

Well, as you may know, sometimes we like to give homework here at HAR (don't worry, all of it is extra credit, and none of it is graded)! Now that you've digested all that info above, here's a nifty downloadable worksheet you can use to walk you through writing your own pitch!

When you’re ready to debut your elevator introduction to the world, don’t forget to bring your business cards with you! In fact, if you have a few words from your intro on your card, that will make the other person’s association with you even more memorable!

Again, this isn’t a conventional sales pitch kind of deal. It’s really just to make a memorable first impression so you can make great connections, pique the interest of others, and (if you’re chatting with a client) move in for a potential sale later.

This is even more important for independent travel agency owners since you are so integral to your brand!

Don’t be shy! Try it out! Write it in the comments below and let us know how it went! Drop us a line (email below) and try out your elevator pitch examples on me! I can’t wait to hear them!

As a general rule, the most important coverage to have in a foreign country is travel medical insurance , as most US health insurance policies don't cover you while you're abroad. Without travel medical coverage, a medical emergency in a foreign country can cost you. You'll want trip cancellation and interruption coverage if your trip is particularly expensive. Your needs for travel insurance will depend on the type of trip you're taking. You'll need to consider your destination and what you'll be doing there, either business, leisure, or adventure traveling. Policies covering adventure sports and activities will cost more. Longer, more expensive trips will also cost more.

Research the reputation of the company

When researching a company, you'll want to closely review the description of services. You'll want to see how claims are handled, any exceptions, and limitations.

You'll also want to look at the company's customer reviews on sites like Trustpilot, BBB, and Squaremouth, as this will provide insight on the quality of customer service and the claims process. You should also take note of whether companies respond to customer reviews.

Compare prices

You can get quotes through a company's website or travel insurance aggregators like InsureMyTrip and VisitorsCoverage. You'll need to be prepared to provide the following information about your trip:

  • Trip destination(s)
  • Travel dates
  • Number of travelers
  • Traveler(s) age/birthday
  • State of residence
  • Total trip cost

For companies that offer travel medical insurance, you'll also want to play around with the deductible options, as they can affect your policy premium.

Understanding International Travel Insurance Coverage Options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the Best Price for International Travel Insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

Why You Should Trust Us: How We Reviewed International Travel Insurance Companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

International Travel Insurance FAQs

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

You should pay attention to any limitations regarding covered cancellations, pre-existing conditions, and adventure activities. For example, if you're worried you may have to cancel a trip for work reasons, ensure that you've worked at your company long enough to qualify for cancellation coverage, as that is a condition with some insurers. You should also see if your destination has any travel advisories, as that can affect your policy.

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

You should purchase travel insurance as soon as possible after making payment on your trip. This makes you eligible for add-ons like coverage for pre-existing conditions and CFAR. It also mitigates the chance of any losses in the days leading up to your trip.

Travelers are drowning in junk fees during the summer of surcharges

  • Junk fees are getting creative. Tour operator Phyllis Stoller found a $30-per-day "urban fee" on her Los Angeles hotel bill.
  • The unwanted extras are often impossible to justify.
  • You can avoid most junk fees with a few simple precautions. Always read the fine print, fee-proof yourself and go fee-free.

Good luck avoiding junk fees when you travel this summer.

There are transaction fees, convenience fees, resort fees – and a beef cost surcharge.

That's what Alan Levine says he found on his bill when he stopped at a steakhouse in Moab, Utah.

"My server claimed the beef cost surcharge was standard," says Levine, a retired editor from New York. "But I had ordered chicken."

Junk fees – hidden, mandatory extras added to your final bill – have mushroomed in recent months, and travelers are crying foul. The government is waging a public war against these annoying extras, but businesses still love hitting their customers with extras because fooling them into paying more is highly profitable.

Check out   Elliott Confidential , the newsletter the travel industry doesn't want you to read. Each issue is filled with breaking news, deep insights, and exclusive strategies for becoming a better traveler. But don't tell anyone!

How much do they love them? Consider what happened when the Department of Transportation recently said it would start requiring airlines to quote an all-in price on airline tickets instead of separating fees for carry-on luggage and canceling or changing a reservation. In response, the airline industry sued the agency last week, claiming it had overreached its authority.

But the latest junk fees are too much, and as it turns out there's a reason they're multiplying. There are also proven ways to avoid these unethical extras.

Will new airline consumer protection rules help you when you fly this summer?

The latest junk fees cross a line for travelers

Fees are everywhere when you travel – and worse, companies seem unwilling to remove them.

  • Junk fees are getting creative. Instead of a mandatory resort fee in addition to the room rate, tour operator Phyllis Stoller found a $30-a-day "urban fee" on her Los Angeles hotel bill. The fee covers a daily newspaper, phone calls and free internet access. "I wasn't paying attention when I checked out and paid it," she says.
  • The unwanted extras are often impossible to justify. How about a 3% transaction fee? That's what Robert Kraus, a meeting planner from Alexandria, Virginia, found on his hotel bill in Chicago. When he asked about it, a representative told him it was to cover the cost of paying by credit card. So Kraus offered to pay with cash. "They said they couldn't waive the fee," he says.
  • Often the fees can't be explained. Alan Craig, retired CEO of an automotive accessories company, recently found a $2 surcharge at a hamburger restaurant. No one could tell him what it was for or whether it was mandatory. "I paid it, but I let them know these fees are bad for business," he says.

Bottom line: Travelers will probably feel as if they're drowning in junk fees this summer. They'll be kicking themselves because somewhere in the fine print or in their hotel folio, the mandatory extras were disclosed. And businesses have proved reluctant to remove the junk fees.

Why are there so many junk fees?

Why are junk fees spreading despite government intervention? Businesses are under relentless pressure to turn a profit, and junk fees are a shortcut to higher earnings, experts say.

"Appearing to provide the lowest cost of travel is a great way to attract customers," says Eric Chaffee, a law professor at Case Western Reserve University. "Even if it is, in fact, not true."

That's especially true of airlines, and one reason why the U.S. airlines are suing the federal government. The true cost of flying is far higher than the airfare you're being quoted.

"Airlines have begun to charge for a lot more things in order to stay in business," Chaffee says. "Hiding these fees until later is one way of ensuring that."

Tipping is 'not an entitlement': Should travelers stop tipping for everything?

This type of vacation rental cancellation is on the rise. Are you next?

But hiding fees – basically, not disclosing the true price of your product – irritates customers. Price transparency, which is what the government wants, "is the fair thing to do," he says.

It's not just airlines that are being targeted by the government. A California ban on junk fees , which will outlaw many restaurant surcharges, takes effect on July 1. And there, too, the restaurant industry is reportedly considering a lawsuit to fight the ban. (The law disappointingly allows car rental companies and car dealerships to continue charging some fees. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.)

Bottom line: There are so many junk fees because they make businesses so much money.

How to avoid junk fees this summer

You don't have to be a victim when you travel this summer. You can avoid most junk fees with a few simple precautions.

  • Always read the fine print: Junk fees are often hidden in plain sight. Businesses disclose them on their websites or in the confirmations they email you. They read them to you over the phone in monotone (they're reading from a script). They tell you in a way that's utterly forgettable. That's why you have to pay attention when you travel. Don't zone out. Read the fine print.
  • Fee-proof yourself: One way to protect yourself from fees such as luggage surcharges is to join an airline loyalty program (although I'm not a fan of loyalty programs, as I've noted before). "Obtaining status can help you save money in the long run," says Bob Bacheler, managing director of a medical transportation service and a frequent traveler. (But just be careful to not trade one set of fees for another. Some co-branded credit cards have high annual fees.)
  • Go fee-free: There are travel companies that have taken a stand against junk fees. For example, Southwest Airlines doesn't charge passengers for checked or carry-on luggage. Most name-brand car rental companies (Avis, Enterprise, Hertz) quote all-in prices. The other car rental companies, not exactly. Find these fee-free businesses and patronize them. It sends a message that you want fair pricing.

What to do when you're charged a junk fee this summer

You can read the fine print, join a loyalty program and patronize a fee-free business but still get stuck with a junk fee this summer. Yeah, that's how pervasive they are.

Levine, the editor who got slammed with a beef cost surcharge for his chicken dinner – and was told it was a standard charge – had a ready response.

"I told them that my standard way of dealing with thieves is to walk away," he says. "They took the charge off the bill."

I have another idea: If a business hits you with a hidden junk fee, you need to do three things. First, let the company know that you are unhappy with the fee and ask it to remove the charge. Second, never do business with the company again.

And third, warn everyone you know about the unethical whether it's on social media, a letter to the editor, or a review on a restaurant website. Sooner or later, it will get the message.

6 tips for building a company from the ground up.

Dan Galorath is founder and CEO of Galorath , a leader in cost estimation, actionable data and expertise for informed decision-making.

While some people may have been excited about the release of the Sony Walkman, the first snowboard in the U.S., or ESPN launching on cable TV, 1979 is a year I will never forget for an entirely different reason. It was the year I embarked on my entrepreneurial journey to revolutionize software and hardware development processes.

Now, over 40 years later, I am incredibly proud of the team and talent that have gotten us to where we are today: a company that is stronger than ever and built for continued success. It has not been an easy feat, nor has it been without challenges. Many say we beat the odds, as only around one-third of American businesses survive for 10 years.

In the vast landscape of entrepreneurship, trying to develop something impactful, sustainable and profitable is both exhilarating and overwhelming. Building a successful company from the ground up requires many things: strategic planning, perseverance, adaptability, well-defined goals and a solidified plan of execution.

At its core, a successful business requires hard work, dedication and—let's face it—a bit of luck. While my personal experiences are primarily based on digital engineering, analysis and cost estimation, I believe others can increase their chances of success by keeping the following in mind.

NSA Warns iPhone And Android Users To Turn It Off And On Again

‘godzilla minus one’ is coming to netflix this weekend, but there’s a catch, sudden u s dollar collapse fear predicted to trigger a 15 7 trillion etf bitcoin price gold flip as countries go dual currency, six tips for startup success, 1. focus on user-centric design..

Every feature and function should be intuitive, efficient and user-friendly. This approach requires designing products, services, processes or systems that focus on understanding end users' needs, wants and behaviors, which in turn means your company must have systems and processes that enable ongoing enhancements and optimizations. We live in a tech-forward world, and only products and services that are built to adapt to endless shifts in consumer needs and withstand an evolving economy will make it long-term.

2. Identify a clear market need.

This starts by identifying a problem in the market and how your business will resolve it. To further understand your target audience, conduct thorough market research, find their pain points and clearly establish how your product or solution will address them. It’s important to leverage this information and ensure outbound communications are centered around what sets your company apart from others in the market.

3. Ensure dedicated professional services.

Prioritize customer needs by providing excellent service and support at every level. Your product can only succeed if customers can leverage it to its full potential and are satisfied with their overall results. In today’s market landscape, when businesses are watching every dollar spent, ensuring that you have strong support for customers to help them maximize their investments is crucial. This remains extremely important at my company, with dedicated professional services built on 40 years of expertise that ensure every project vision progresses into tangible successes.

4. Remain agile and adaptable.

Adapt to changing market conditions and customer preferences. For example, my company began as a consulting firm, but the vision quickly expanded as we identified the challenges and inconsistencies plaguing manual estimation processes. Furthermore, these challenges inspired our team of seasoned engineers, scientists and analysts to create what is now the leading cost estimation and optimization platform.

5. Surround yourself with a strong team.

By building a team of talented individuals who share your passion for your vision and possess the skills needed for success, you will foster a work culture that encourages collaboration, creativity and innovation. Success must be evenly distributed, which is why my company transitioned to an employee-owned model, ensuring the best minds in the industry grow together.

6. Finance planning is a must.

Finally, having a solid foundation of funds to work with is essential when starting a new venture. I learned this the hard way and had to make some difficult financial decisions early on. This included skipping out on a salary for several years, as well as needing to be more frugal on important business-related matters due to undercapitalization. It is possible to accomplish your business goals with less funding upfront, and while sacrifices are virtually unavoidable for anyone working through the ups and downs of business revenue, if you can build up extra funds prior to implementing a business plan, it will help.

Final Thoughts

Building a successful business doesn’t happen overnight and comes with many uncertainties and complexities. It’s important to remind yourself to remain patient and resilient and celebrate even small achievements as you work toward long-term success. And don’t forget the people who helped you along the way.

As the founder and CEO of a company that has been transforming how organizations approach intricate, specialized projects for over four decades, I believe our legacy is built not just on successful products and services, but on the people behind them.
