Holland America Line Releases 2023 Alaska Cruise And Tour Highlights

We're almost at the starting point for the 2022 Alaska cruise season and it's looking great but Holland America Line is charting a course to Alaska in 2023 too and they've just released their plans. The 2023 Holland America Line Alaska cruise season will feature expertly crafted journeys on six ships that offer preferred access to the top destinations, exclusive overland transportation, culturally focused onboard experiences and more visits to Glacier Bay than any other major cruise line!

Holland America Line is the expert cruise line for the Alaska market and this year they are celebrating 75 years of Alaska exploration. Guests will notice a distinct difference between Holland America Line Alaska cruises and other lines in the way they weave that expertise into every nuance of the journey and enable travelers to discover the most authentic elements of the 49th state, both on board and ashore. Of course, their legendary hospitality is a key part of that experience no matter where they are cruising.

From April through September 2023, guests can embark on Holland America Line's cruises to Alaska aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Volendam and Westerdam. In addition to seven-day itineraries, Holland America Line is bringing back the popular 14-day "Great Alaska Explorer" cruise for two departures.

For explorers who want to travel farther into the Great Land, 16 different Cruisetours (formerly Land+Sea Journeys) combine a three-, four- or seven-day Alaska cruise with an inland exploration of Denali National Park. Holland America Line is the only cruise line that extends land tours up to the unspoiled reaches of Canada's Yukon Territory.

Cruises sail roundtrip from Seattle , Washington; roundtrip from Vancouver , B.C.; or one-way between Whittier (Anchorage), Alaska, and Vancouver. The ships deliver a premium experience designed for immersive cruising. Highlights for 2023 Alaska Cruises:

• Every Alaska cruise includes a visit to one or more of Alaska's iconic glacier destinations: Glacier Bay National Park, College Fjord, Hubbard Glacier and Twin Sawyer Glaciers of Tracy Arm.
• The 14-day "Great Alaskan Explorer" itinerary returns in 2023 to offer an in-depth adventure. Roundtrip from Vancouver aboard Nieuw Amsterdam (May 7) and Noordam (Sept. 17), the cruise calls at the Alaskan ports of Kodiak, Anchorage, Valdez, Sitka, Skagway and Ketchikan, and features Glacier Bay.
• Seven-day "Glacier Discovery Northbound" and "Glacier Discovery Southbound" itineraries cruise between Whittier and Vancouver aboard Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam. Ports include Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, Alaska.
• Seven-day "Alaska Inside Passage" cruises sail roundtrip from Vancouver on Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam and Volendam. Ports include Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, except for Noordam that stops at Sitka vs Skagway.
• Seven-day "Alaskan Explorer" cruises sail roundtrip from Seattle aboard Eurodam and Westerdam, and include calls at Victoria, British Columbia (evening stay); and Ketchikan, Juneau and Sitka.
• All ships cruising in Alaska feature expanded onboard programming: guests can engage with an Alaska naturalist, special EXC presentations explore local topics such as Alaska's bush pilots and the famous Iditarod race, and cruises with Glacier Bay take on a National Park Ranger and local Huna Tlingit guides.

Highlights for 2023 Denali Cruisetours:

• Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam will offer Denali Cruisetours ranging from nine to 14 days.
• All Denali Cruisetours include a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise featuring Glacier Bay, plus either College Fjord or Hubbard Glacier (depending on the direction), Inside Passage, as well as up to three nights at the McKinley Chalet Resort at the entrance to Denali National Park.
• All Double and Triple Denali itineraries include the Tundra Wilderness Tour, which provides the best wildlife viewing through Denali National Park.
• Holland America Line owns its motorcoaches, railcars and hotels, so schedules are preferential. Each Cruisetour gets a scenic ride on the luxury-domed McKinley Explorer, including select itineraries that offer Direct-to-Denali service, taking guests from their ship to their Denali hotel room on the same day.

Highlights for 2023 Yukon & Denali Cruisetours:

Holland America Line is the ONLY cruise line to offer an Alaska cruise combined with an overland tour to Denali and the Yukon.

• Yukon & Denali Cruisetours range from nine to 18 days and include either a three- or four-day Inside Passage cruise on Koningsdam or Volendam, or a seven-day Glacier Discovery cruise on Nieuw Amsterdam or Noordam; a two-or three-night stay at Denali; and a journey into the Yukon.
• Every Yukon & Denali Cruisetour includes the services of a professional Journey Host, who makes time on land easy, convenient and insightful.

Centrally located between the McKinley Chalet Resort and riverfront guest rooms, Denali Square is a gathering area with restaurants, an amphitheater, fire pits, outdoor seating, retail shops offering local goods, and an artist-in-residence cabin where Alaska native and local artists display and discuss their works.

Things to Do on an Alaska Cruise with Holland America Line

The rugged landscape of Alaska lends itself to amazing adventures in nature. With Holland America’s Alaskan cruises you can whitewater raft, go searching for bears and pan for gold. The landscape is also inspiring, and you can taste it in the beer and see it in the local art.

• Sixmile Creek Whitewater Rafting (Alyeska, Alaska) Have a thrilling adventure in the Alaskan outdoors as you whitewater raft through Class III and IV waterways along Sixmile Creek. Along the way you’ll get great views of the spectacular scenery of the Kenai Peninsula. The Sixmile Creek flows out of the Chugach Mountains and through three canyons.  

• 26 Glacier Cruise (Anchorage, Alaska) Travel through an amazing cluster of glaciers on a luxury catamaran. You’ll sit back and take in the glaciers, fjords and 145 miles of waterways as a U.S. Forest Service Ranger provides narration. Along the way you’ll probably spot eagles, otters and seals, and maybe even an orca. On some cruises you could be lucky enough to see a chunk of glacier calving off into the sea.  

• A Taste of Haines: Meet the Brewmeister (Haines, Alaska) Head to Dalton City, created in 1989 to film the Disney Film White Fang. Here you’ll tour the Haines Brewing Company, the state’s smallest brewery, which produces 350 barrels a year. You’ll meet the brewmaster and try some of his ales. Then see how locals smoke salmon and halibut and sample some dishes.  

• Whales, Wildlife and Bear Search (Icy Strait Point, Alaska) Icy Strait Point is a wildlife lover’s dream. On this trip you’ll go whale spotting on a cruise to Point Adolphus, hopefully seeing seals, otters and even bald eagles in the vicinity. Onboard, a naturalist describes the sea life that flocks to this area. When back on land, head to the Spasski River and the Tlingit village of Hoonah to spot brown bears, deer and woodpeckers.  

• Wild Arts Artist Walk: Hot Italian Glass (Sitka, Alaska) Sitka has a strong arts community and on this adventure you’ll wind your way through various art galleries, including the Wild Arts Gallery and Studio where you’ll see artists making glass canes. You might also see demonstrations of wood carving, jewelry making and ceramics. During the glass demonstration you will have the opportunity to try the art form out for yourself.  

• White Pass Rail, Klondike Highway and Gold Camp Adventure (Skagway, Alaska) See stunning views as you travel along Alaska’s White Pass aboard a narrow gauge rail car. You’ll stop at Liarsville, which was a gold rush trail camp where reporters who sensationalized the exploits of prospectors were stationed. You can even try to pan for gold here. You will also be entertained by dance hall girls and poetry by Robert Service.

Alaska cruises in 2023 include a pass by some tidewater glaciers including Glacier Bay , Hubbard Glacier . Tidewater glaciers are a type of glacier that flows directly into the sea and can calve violently into the water. Passing through the Inside Passage , the most popular cruises visit areas like Strait of Georgia , and Tracy Arm . With a few exceptions at Haines , Hoonah , and Sitka , cruises also visit Ketchikan , Skagway , or Juneau .

Southeast Alaska is aslo home to the Tongass National Forest , which is the largest national forest in the whole country. As part of Tongass National Forest , Alexander Archipelago is a collection of about 1,100 islands stretching along Alaska’s southeast coast.

To reach Denali, Fairbanks , and the Yukon in Canada, you should head north to the Kenai Peninsula and neighboring Anchorage .

Looking forward to our upcoming July 2023 Nieuw Amsterdam Northbound (Vancouver to Whittier) Alaskan cruise. I was curious about the daily activities onboard the ship as we have essentially 3 days at sea. As I peruse my Navigator app that is now working, I go to Experiences-Daily Program and pick the day. I am assuming this is where our daily activities will show up once we get closer to our cruise date (or maybe even not until the days of our cruise). Right now I see our excursions on there, our dinner reservations, and I do see "Afternoon Tea is Served" at 3 pm. But not much else is there. What types of activities can we expect on a daily basis? We have 8 people and most of us are fairly active even though I will be fine just sitting around reading a book and I am hoping there will be plenty of interesting sights as we cruise the "Inside Passage", Glacier Bay, and the College Fjord. I see a cruise critic article that shows specific activities on the Nieuw Amsterdam and lists America's Test Kitchen classes (that would be cool), Arts and Crafts, Afternoon Musical Concerts, Beer Tasting, Wine Tasting, Trivia, Onboard Lectures, etc. Is this all accurate? Just trying to get an idea and a preview of what will be available and I am sure that boat is sailing now so just curious as to what is happening on there now (or what has happened on there in the past) and what we have to look forward to. Very much looking forward to our first sailing with Holland America. We are in our 50's but want some activities on our days at sea.

We had our first HAL cruise on the NA to Alaska on April 30th, and are in out late 50s.  Yes there was more than enough activities to do.  Test Kitchen was not running, and due to some contract issue or something, Lincoln Center was not operating.  There were lots of daytime activities, starting quite early in the morning with line dancing, all sorts of craft/art classes, lectures and so on.  You will not suffer from lack of activities on sea days.  Decent band in BB Kings, also other live entertainment.

Compared to other lines I was more than satisfied, but things did seem to drop of early before midnight.  Found service was excellent, crew fantastic, food was good. 

You will see just weeks before departure more and more will be added to the app, so no worries.  Yes we will cruise HAL again, already booked another cruise.  Will also say our day in Glacier Bay was epic.  Enjoy

• Early Dining is at 5:00 PM on Deck 3  Second seating on Deck 3 should be 7:30 PM but I am not certain since I was early dining.
• Open (Anytime) Dining is 5:00 - 9:00 PM on Deck 2

Unless very very recently added back on, ATK (America's Test Kitchen) is no longer on the ships.

After reviewing the Southbound itinerary, I think Gala Nights will be 02 and 04.

I m already very late in the game . Would like to travel

( 4 adults ) in July 24 from CA

It seems that most cruises are 7 days round trip from Seattle or Vancouver.

It seems that Princess offers a one way cruise going either north or south with a land tour of several days at their resorts in Denali .

This sounds more appealing, but I am wondering if any body knows of other options for one way cruises without having to go to the specific cruise line's resort.

Kind of .. not comfortable

So much depends on what you want to see and do, as well you are very late in planning…maybe share a bit more with us! If not, the suggestion of a few days in Seward sounds better to me than a cruise land tour. :)

Your teens would hate being herded around like sheep on a cruisetour, most likely stuck on buses/trains with a bunch of older adults.

We are mostly interested in seeing marine & wildlife as mentioned earlier .

I do drive in CA , little hesitant to drive in unknown place & I always avoid mountains/ hills since I have some health issues

Since we are late in the game I see only one way trip but most are from Vancouver to whitter or vice versa.

Spending a couple of days in Seward is fine--include a Kenai Fjords cruise , maybe such things as kayaking, hiking, SeaLife Center, sled dog tour, fishing, etc. Then you can go by bus or train up to ANC. In fact, there is a bus that goes all the way from Seward to Denali in a single day but that would be rather boring for the kids...plus you'd be stuck with the cruisetour crowds at the entrance hotels. Another option to get to Denali would be to fly ANC to Fairbanks (about $100 pp), rent a car there, and do the easy 2 hr. drive to Denali. Not much traffic on that stretch. Then you aren't stuck in the entrance-area hotels and can choose any lodging you want to (though some may already be booked up). It would be just a short drive to the Denali entrance area to do various activities including East Fork Shuttle into the park to mile 43 (where the road is closed due to construction). You might want to get off to hike along the riverbed for a while past there, or hike somewhere on the way back. If just the kids want to do that, you could head back to the entrance to drive the car back to your lodging, and the kids can phone you when they get back to come pick them up. After a couple of days in Denali, easy drive back to Fairbanks for a flight home.

Holland America Is Offering 40% off Cruises, Onboard Credits, More with Summer Sale

The sale is available for select departures from June through May 2025.

Sail away for less with Holland America Line this summer thanks to a sale that has up to 40 percent off cruise fares, onboard credits, and more.

The cruise line’s “ Summer Savings Event ” is offering big savings on cruises around the world ranging from four to 58 days, Holland America shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is available for select departures from June through May 2025.

To take advantage of the savings, travelers must book by June 28.

In addition to savings on the cruise fare, the sale includes up to $100 in onboard credits per stateroom, 50 percent reduced deposits, and a free third and fourth guest when traveling in the same stateroom.

“Whether travellers are looking to cruise this summer or into next year, our robust Summer Savings Event is a great time to book, especially for families and group getaways taking advantage of the third and fourth guest free perk,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement shared with T+L. “The Summer Savings Event features itineraries in nearly all the places we visit around the world and even includes some of our longer voyages.”

As part of the sale, travelers can head to Alaska, Europe, Canada and New England, the Caribbean, Mexico, Asia, Australia, and more.

Spend a week in August sailing to Alaska roundtrip from Seattle on the Westerdam , for example, with cruise fares starting at just $599 per person, or spend two weeks traversing the Northern Isles on the Rotterdam starting at just $1,459 per person . Travelers can also save big on the epic 53-day Majestic Japan cruise on the Westerdam in September starting at $6,999 per person . 

In addition to this sale, Holland America offers the chance to save on a last-minute trip with its Standby Program , which allows guests to sign up to be on standby to cruise on eligible sailings for just $49 per person per day. Guests find out if they got on a trip a few days before the scheduled departure.

Port Vancouver cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Vancouver, BC Canada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Vancouver is Canada's "Alaskan" cruise port and homeport for Alaska-based liners during summer. The port handles annually between 240-270 cruise ship calls and over 1 million passengers through Canada Place cruise terminal. Port's total annual economic impact is ~USD 1,6 billion.

As the number and sizes of cruise liners to Vancouver constantly increase, the port is more and more often ranked as congested. The average passenger capacity of the vessels increased by 138% (up to 3100 pax) and the average LOA length increased by 50%, (up to 300 m / 985 ft). However, Canada Place Terminal's capacity is limited as the facility was built for older design ships.

Port Vancouver

Vancouver's cruise shipping business generates nearly US$3 million by each visiting vessel (at Canada Place), nearly 7000 Canadian jobs, ~US$300 million in wages, ~US$840 million to Canada's GDP. As cargo port, Vancouver BC is ranked North America's 3rd largest - after South Louisiana (along Mississippi River) and Houston TX . It serves shipping lines connecting Canada with 170+ countries. Port's annual trade volume is estimated at ~USD 200 billion. It sustains a total of 115,300 Canadian jobs, and generates US$7 billion in wages and US$12 billion in GDP.

The Port Authority company Vancouver Fraser manages the federal seaport lands in and around the city. Vancouver is Canada’s largest cruise port and main homeport for Alaskan cruises. The port has 28 marine terminals serving Ro-Ro ships (car carriers), break-bulk and bulk carriers, container ships and cruise vessels.

• In 2019, BC Government, Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and FortisBC (natural gas and electricity provider) signed a deal to establish Westcoast Canada's first STS LNG (ship-to-ship LNG ) marine bunkering. The new service is for ocean-going and large-sized vessels, including BC Ferries ships .
• The project includes a 5-year construction period for building the needed infrastructure. The project's economic contribution was estimated at CAD 1,8 billion (to BC's GDP/during the construction) and an annual impact of CAD 930 million.
• State's LNG bunkering business was inaugurated in 2017. Currently, 5x Ro-Pax ships (BC Ferries) and two cargo ferries (Seaspan) are truck-fuelled with LNG by FortisBC. By the new project, large vessels are LNG-fuelled via barge, being filled up at a jetty on Fraser River (Tilbury Island).

Port's cruising season is May through late-September / early-October. Since 2008, the seaport voluntary purchases renewable / wind energy. At Canada Place terminal, port's cruise business generates (direct economic activity) an average of USD 3 million per visiting vessel. Ship types vary from large and mainstream to top-luxury and small expedition vessels. Inaugurated in 2009, Canada Place terminal's shore-to-ship power capabilities reduce significantly the amount of greenhouse gas emissions generated by visiting vessels. The new technology allows docked cruise ships to shut down completely their diesel engines and connect to BC Hydro’s electrical grid for all the needed onboard electrical power while berthed. The volume of reduced emissions per year is over 2200 tons. Approx 40% of all cruise vessels visiting the port are shorepower enabled. As incentives for using shorepower, the port offers 50% reduction in harbour dues.

In 2010, the port was visited by around 600,000 cruise ship tourists. In 2014 was closed the Ballantyne Pier terminal. Since then, Canada Place is city's only remaining cruise ship terminal.

In 2015, the cruise port handled a total of 228 ship visits (32 different vessels) and over 800,000 passengers. During season 2015, Princess Cruises introduced new roundtrip Vancouver itineraries to Hawaii and US West Coast (California) on Ruby Princess . Port's 2016 statistics included directly generated nearly 7,000 jobs (country-wide), USD 300 million in paid wages and USD 840 million to Canada's GDP.

On May 20, 2017, the cruise port reported a record day with 3 ship calls ( Emerald Princess , Star Princess , ms Nieuw Amsterdam ) and a total of 15,800 cruise tourists. Vancouver police units were assigned to direct traffic. The port authority warned of transportation delays. The record day resulted in hours-long waits at Canada Place terminal (for customs processing) and additional long waits for taxis. The taxicab problem was mainly due to the limited number of cab licenses issued in Vancouver City, as well as the local prohibition of ride-sharing services.

Over Canada Day 2017's long weekend (July 1, 2, 3), a fleet of 8 cruise ships came into Vancouver harbour docking at Canada Place. These ships ( Golden Princess / overnight, Star Princess , Nieuw Amsterdam , Noordam , Celebrity Infinity , Norwegian Sun , Crystal Serenity and Disney Wonder) had total economic impact on local businesses estimated at USD 24 million. It was based on the average USD 3 million per cruise liner ashore passenger spending (on restaurants, shopping, pre- and post-voyage hotel stays, local transportation, day tours). In 2017, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 236 ship calls (2% increase over 2016) and handled nearly 843,000 passengers (3% increase over 2016). During season 2017, the port had scheduled 33 different liners from the fleets of 15 different companies. The port's economic impact in 2017 is USD 3 million per ship call (including spending on tours, hotels, taxis, shopping, etc).

For season 2018, the cruise port reported a record year - 243 ship calls (7% increase over 2017), 33 different ships, 14 different companies, over 900,000 passengers. On May 23 was celebrated port's 25 millionth arriving cruise ship tourist. Port's largest liner so far is NCL's Norwegian Bliss (capacity 4200 passengers). NCL Bliss departed from Vancouver (Oct 1, 5-day repositioning cruise) to Los Angeles via San Francisco . Port's 1 millionth cruise passenger mark was reached in 2002 (1,060383 million).

In 2018-H1 (first half), port's containerized cargo volumes increased by 5% (over 2017-H1) to the record number 1,64 million TEU-containers. The increase was due to increasing international demand for Canadian goods and Canadian demand for Asian goods. Beside container shipping trade, port's results also showed:

• increase in potash (22,7%), autos (8%), coal (8,9%), forest (4%) and petroleum (40,2%) products
• decline in grain (10,2%, crops-feed), chemicals-minerals (5%), ores-concentrates (27,8%). Port's 2018-H1 cargo traffic (over 2017-H1) report included:
• Overall cargo increased 4,4% - to total 72,1 million tons.
• Auto units increased 8,3%, to total 236396.
• Breakbulk cargoes increased 14,4 % - to total 8,8 million tons, including 21,1% in domestic traffic.
• Drybulk cargoes increased 0,7%.
• Liquid bulk cargoes increased 28,3%, including 40,2% in petroleum products.
• TEU-container shipping increased 5,1% - to total 1,64 million.
• Cruise shipping traffic increased 12,7%.

For season 2019 (March 29 through November 1), the number of handled ship calls was 288 (+22% over 2018), with estimated 1,077 million passengers. Berth bookings 2019 were made by 24 brands/companies for 41 different vessels. New cruise lines included Azamara (ship Azamara Quest ), Cunard ( MS Queen Elizabeth ), Viking Ocean ( MS Viking Orion ) and Hurtigruten ( MS Roald Amundsen ). Other new liners (with maiden port calls) included Ovation OTS , Celebrity Eclipse , Norwegian Joy , Royal Princess , Star Legend , Silver Muse , L’Austral .

In mid-July 2020 was opened G3 Terminal Vancouver (grain export terminal, construction works started in March 2017.) featuring modern design, loop track elevators, a direct railway link for taking Canadian Prairies grain via trains (and loading it onto drybulk cargo ships), max capacity 3x 150-car trains and storage capacity 180,000 MT (metric tonnes). Trains unload while in motion and go back to the terminal’s elevators without detaching from the locomotives. At G3’s berth/dock are installed 3x loaders that move the grain (max capacity 6500 tons per hour) onto the ship. G3 Terminal Vancouver is a joint-venture between Western Stevedoring Company Ltd and G3 Global Holdings - a joint-venture between Bunge Ltd (US-based agribusiness and food company) and SALIC Canada Ltd (subsidiary of SALIC-Saudi Agricultural and Livestock Investment Company).

Despite the Coronavirus crisis, 2020 became a record-breaking year in Vancouver Port's 108-year history by revenues (~USD 50 million / ~EUR 42M) or 15% increase over 2019. Moved through the seaport were 7+ million MT (metric tonnes) of commodities, 5,4+ million MT of grain, 0,3+ million MT of copper concentrate, 2700+ wind turbines, ~90,000 automobiles.

For season 2022 (April 10 thru November 2) the cruise port handled 307 ship calls (+6,5% over 2019's 288 visits/~85% from homeported vessels, including 10x maiden calls and 18x shorepower berthings) and ~815,000 tourists.

2023 (April 12th thru October 24th) was Port Vancouver's record year, with booked a total of 332 cruise ship berthings (~9% increase over 2022) and ~1,25 million tourists (+54% over 2022 and +10% over 2019).

For 2024 (March 11th thru October 29th), the Port had scheduled/booked a total of 329 ship berthings, with projected ~1,27 million passengers to pass through the Canada Place Terminal (~2% increase over 2023).

In October 2023, Seaspan Vancouver Drydock (in North Vancouver/on 203 Esplanade E) received permit approval from the Port Authority to extend its drydock facilities and expand the infrastructure in order to be able to provide services (ship repairs and maintenance works) to larger vessels. The project included the extension of Seaspan's water lot by 130 ft/40 m and the addition of two new drydocks (smaller) plus a floating pontoon, located to the west of the old drydocks. The project's completion was slated for 2024-Q4.

Vancouver cruise terminal

Canada's Government established Port Metro Vancouver (locode CAVAN) in January 2008. Today, the Port is ranked North America's fourth-largest and Canada's largest by annually handled tonnage. Port Vancouver is in western Canada, at British Colombia’s southwestern corner. Its cruise schedule lists voyages from spring through fall, with vessels departing from Canada Place Ship Terminal.

The Terminal's address is "Canada Place Pier, 99 Canada Place Vancouver, BC, Canada".

Canada Place Cruise Ship Terminal

The Canada Place Vancouver terminal was inaugurated on April 28, 1986. The facility's design features 5 sail-shaped roofs. Except the building, other facilities include VINCI Car Park, Port Metro Office, World Trade Center Office, Pan-Pacific Hotel.

At Canada Place Terminal are available restrooms, baggage trolleys, a snack shop. From the Terminal are directly accessed ship berths North (length 274 m / 900 ft), East (506 m / 1660 ft) and West (326 m / 1070 ft).

In May 2015, Canada Place Vancouver became the world's first cruise terminal with a total of 10x BorderXpress APC kiosks (abbrev "Automated Passport Control"). The project was a collaboration of Port Metro Vancouver and the Vancouver Airport Authority.

The Ballantyne terminal is located on 851 Centennial Road, Vancouver. It looks like a commercial dock after its 1995 renovation and extensions. Amenities include luggage carts, restrooms, snack concessions, security and taxi ranks. The berth is only one – East, 1200 ft.

JUNEAU, Alaska — A new agreement between Alaska’s capital city and major cruise lines seeks to cap the daily number of cruise ship passengers arriving in Juneau starting in 2026, though a prominent critic of the cruise industry said Tuesday the planned limits do not do enough.

The agreement, finalized late last week, seeks a daily limit of 16,000 cruise passengers Sundays through Fridays and 12,000 on Saturdays. However, officials said that doesn't necessarily mean there will be that many people every day.

Cruise passengers numbers ramped up rapidly after two pandemic-stunted years, hitting a record of more than 1.6 million passengers in Juneau last year. That's caused tension between businesses that rely on tourism and residents who are fed up with increased traffic, busy trails and the hum of helicopters ferrying visitors to glaciers.

Cruise seasons also have gotten longer, with the first boat this year arriving in Juneau in early April and the last set to arrive in late October. On peak days in the past, passenger numbers have totaled about two-thirds of Juneau's population of roughly 32,000 people.

A daily limit of five large ships took effect with the current season, as part of a separate agreement signed last year.

Alexandra Pierce, Juneau’s visitor industry director, said Tuesday that the aim with the current agreement is to hold cruise passenger numbers roughly steady, in the 1.6 million range.

“The idea is that the agreement buys everybody time not only to see if it is sustainable but also to build the infrastructure that will help it feel more sustainable,” she said.

Pierce said she expects a number of projects will be completed in the next five years “that will help our current numbers feel less impactful." She cited plans for a gondola at the city-owned ski area, updates to the downtown sea walk and increased visitor capacity at the popular Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.

The agreement, which was signed by the city manager and major cruise line executives, also calls for yearly meetings to “review lessons learned, to review and optimize the subsequent season’s operations, and align on community and industry parameters, goals, and opportunities.”

Pierce said city leaders are “trying to balance the needs of our residents, the needs of our economy, the needs of future opportunities for people to stay in our community.”

Karla Hart, a longtime critic of the industry, is skeptical of the new agreement, saying it doesn't do enough to address concerns many residents have that current tourism levels are unsustainable.

“It feels like we’re just getting led along again, and expansion will continue and more time will pass" and impacts will continue, she said.

Hart is helping push a proposed local ballot initiative that would institute “ship free Saturdays,” with no cruise ships with a capacity of at least 250 passengers allowed to stop in Juneau on Saturdays or on July 4. The signature-review process for the proposed measure is underway. If the measure is certified, it could appear on the October ballot.

Renée Limoge Reeve, vice president of government and community relations for Cruise Lines International Association Alaska, a trade group, said initiatives “remove the opportunity for collaboration and discussion, and I think that that leaves a lot to be desired."

She said the agreements with Juneau are the first such agreements the industry has signed in Alaska and underscore the cruise lines' commitment “to being good partners in the communities that we visit.” Juneau and other southeast Alaska communities are popular stops on cruises that leave from Seattle or Vancouver. The much-smaller community of Sitka also has been grappling with the debate over tourism numbers.

Reeve and Pierce also participated Tuesday in a Greater Juneau Chamber of Commerce news conference to discuss the agreement.
