What makes for a good wildlife safari.

A comfortable vehicle and good snacks are a must for a fun day on safari, but what makes our tours exceptional are our incredibly passionate and knowledgeable guides! Each of our guides have unique backgrounds in wildlife and all share the same love for our parks and the animals. This is more than just a job to them and part of the thrill of guiding is sharing the experience with their guests when you see your first wild grizzly, or watch a herd of bison in their ancient natural range. Our expert guides equipped with our high-quality optics for up close viewing is sure to deliver a wildlife safari that you will never forget!

How should I prepare for my first animal safari?

One thing to know about Yellowstone and Grand Teton is that the weather is unpredictable. It’s not impossible to see snow in July! Even on hot summer days the mornings and evenings can be cold, so be sure to pack layers to prepare for varying temperatures. If you are coming from lower elevations, take your time and drink plenty of water. Don’t worry, there will be lots of restroom opportunities! Cell phone cameras have come a long way and will certainly do the job, but if you have a camera with a longer zoom be sure to bring it with you. There are no guarantees with wildlife, so keep an open mind. Wild animals are on their own schedules and there’s always a chance you won’t see the one thing you were hoping for. However, there are so many amazing things to see in these parks that you will not be disappointed!

How to tour from Jackson Hole to Yellowstone?

One of the best things about touring Yellowstone from Jackson Hole is that you get the bonus of traveling through Grand Teton National Park on the way. The roughly 50-mile drive between Jackson and the South Entrance is thoroughly enjoyable as you start with the sunrise hitting the jagged peaks of the Teton mountain range. You will have stunning scenery before you even reach the gate, and you may be surprised how many animals you see on the journey! All of this is possible on a day tour and you’ll be picked up and dropped off at your place of lodging. Seeing the best of Yellowstone has never been easier!

Experience the wild side of Jackson Hole on a guided safari.

Jackson Hole is part of the 20-million-acre Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE), the last intact temperate ecosystem in the lower 48 states. The GYE is the only habitat where the same wild, big-game animals (wolves, elk, deer, bison, moose, pronghorn, bighorn sheep) that roamed this land when Lewis and Clarke first traveled through it are still here today. On a wildlife tour, local guides lead you out of crowded areas to observe and teach you about the many species of wildlife that call Jackson Hole home. In addition to spotting wildlife, guides are experts in local flora and fauna, the history of the area, and conservation efforts. Most importantly, guides ensure you have a safe experience that takes you out of the driver’s seat so you can sit back, relax, and take in the sights.

Wildlife are wild and injury, death, fines, and potential jail time are all consequences of getting too close, disturbing, or touching wildlife.

Questions about view wildlife in Jackson Hole

What kind of wildlife will i see.

The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, one of the few remaining intact ecosystems on Earth, is home to more than 200 species of animals including wolves, black and grizzly bears, bison (did you know that Yellowstone bison comprise the nation’s largest bison population on public land?), elk, and nearly 60 other species of mammals. We’re also home to more than 300 species of birds including fantastic raptors like bald eagles, ospreys, and peregrine falcons. You might not see them, but we also have 16 species of fish, six species of reptiles (non-poisonous), and four species of amphibians.

Please help preserve this incredible natural treasure for future generations by observing wildlife from a distance, never feeding the animals, extinguishing wildfires, and driving slowly.

Wildlife Watching

Are there rules for wildlife watching?

Yes, and they exist to protect both you and the animals. No matter how harmless they look, wildlife is wild. Keep your distance, give bears, other large carnivores, and large nesting birds at least 100 yards of space, and give all other animals, including bison, elk, and moose, at least 25 yards of space.

When is the best time to see wildlife?

Wildlife tends to be most active during what locals consider to be the off seasons — April to May and October to November. These are the months that animals migrate between their summer and winter ranges and emerge from or prepare to go into their dens. Wildlife doesn’t disappear in July and August, but they do often rest during the heat of the day, so your best chance of seeing them is at dawn or dusk. When there’s snow on the ground, thousands of elk congregate on the National Elk Refuge, where you can take a sleigh ride into the middle of the herd. Winter is also the best time of year to spot wolves, since their dark coats are more visible against snow than sagebrush.

What do I do if I spot wildlife while driving?

It’s of utmost importance for both the safety of the wildlife and drivers to keep driving lanes clear at all times. If you spot wildlife while driving, pull entirely off the road in a designated pullout to limit roadside erosion and avoid traffic interruptions. Only get out of your vehicle if you can maintain the proper distance between yourself and the wildlife.

On average, more than 300 large animals are killed annually on Teton County roadways. To prevent wildlife collisions, observe the speed limit and be attentive, scan the edges of roads for wildlife, and take note of other drivers’ behavior to spot an indication of nearby wildlife. Gros Ventre Mountain Range

The Gros Ventre Mountain Range (pronounced groh-vahnt) is part of the Central Rocky Mountains and is located west of the Continental Divide in Wyoming. The highest summit in the range is Doubletop Peak at 11,720 feet. The Gros Ventre Mountain Range is mostly within the Gros Ventre Wilderness of Bridger-Teton National Forest. To the northwest of the range lies the valley known as Jackson Hole. The Gros Ventre name is French, which means "big belly", and originated from Indian sign language meant to convey the idea of "always hungry". The area is home to elk, moose, deer, black grizzly bear, and many other species. The United States Congress designated the Gros Ventre Wilderness in 1984 and it now has a total of 317,874 acres. Gros Ventre is a popular destination for snowmobiling for novices, as well as seasoned riders.

Take a relaxing ride on a groomed trail through a winter wildlife sanctuary. Elk, deer, moose, bighorn sheep, eagles, and wolves are animals you could possible see. See where the landslide that took out the town of Kelly (and formed Slide Lake) occurred. The Gros Ventre Valley is considered a critical winter game range so no off-trail snowmobile riding is permitted.

NOTE: Be sure to arrive 60 minutes prior to departure. We offer complimentary pick-ups and drop-offs in Jackson, Teton Village, and the Aspens. We do not pick up in Moose, Moran, Kelly, or Wilson. If you book a private tour, exceptions could be made, but are not guaranteed.

Age Requirement Policy

Drivers for all snowmobiles must be at least 16 years of age or older. Passengers must be at least 5 years of age or older. Children must be accompanied by an adult or guardian. 

Cancellation & Change Policy

Individual tours:.

Please note that we have a strict 48-hour cancellation policy. If canceled/changed within 48 hours of your pickup time, the entire tour is completely non-refundable. If canceled/changed outside of the 48 hours of your pickup time, there is a 10% cancellation fee. Since 48 hours is rather lenient, we do not make exceptions; please take precautions such as trip insurance in case of emergencies or last-minute travel changes.

Groups & Private Tours:

Please note that we have a strict 72-hour cancellation policy. If canceled within 72 hours of your pickup time, the entire tour is completely non-refundable. If *canceled/changed* outside of the 72 hours of your pickup time, there is a 10% cancellation fee. Since 72 hours is rather lenient, we do not make exceptions; please take precautions such as trip insurance in case of emergencies or last-minute travel changes.

Acknowledgment of Risk Form:

Upon arrival, you will be required to sign an Acknowledgement of Risk Form prior to going snowmobiling. You cannot participate in snowmobiling if you do not fill out the Acknowledgement of Risk form completely. Should you want to see a copy before your trip, please call 307-733-8800 and we can email one to you. Should you choose to cancel your snowmobile tour upon reading the Acknowledgement of Risk form, cancellation fees and penalties do apply.

Deposit Policy

Snowmobile Tours: 100% deposit is due at time of booking.

Gratuity Policy

Our guides work hard to make each tour a wonderful and memorable experience for our guests. Gratuity, while not required, is gladly accepted. However, for private tours, a 20% automatic gratuity is added to the price of the tour.

Optional Snowmobile Damage Waiver

Optional snowmobile damage waiver:

• $35 buys you a $1250 deductible for standard snowmobiles • $45 buys you a $1500 deductible for powder snowmobiles. • We only accept cards

You are responsible for the first $1,250/$1,500 worth of damage should you purchase the damage waiver, otherwise you are responsible for 100% of any snowmobile damages incurred if you do not purchase the waiver. The damage waiver is null and void should you be found under the influence of any alcohol or drugs, or if you are not following guide instructions or operating the snowmobile recklessly.

Private Tour Policy

If you would like to make your tour a private experience, first you must meet the 4-snowmobile minimum. If you have 3 people on 3 snowmobiles, expect to pay for 4 snowmobiles. Additionally, a private guide fee of $475 is applied and 20% gratuity will be added to the tour total. Please specify, when booking, if you would like a private tour.

Staff Driver Policy

For families with more children (under the minimum driving age of 16) than adult drivers, we are able to provide a qualified staff member to drive your child (or you, if you simply want to ride as a passenger in order to enjoy the scenery). Expect to pay the driver rate for the staff driver and the passenger rate for yourself. Please specify, when booking, if you are in need of this service. Service is based on staff availability.

Snowmobile Minimum Policy

We have a 4-snowmobile minimum requirement for a tour to take place. If your party is not 4 or more, we try to book more people for the tour. If your tour does not meet the 4-snowmobile minimum requirement, we will reschedule you for a different day or different tour, or let you cancel without penalty. This rarely occurs.

Will we go snowmobiling if it snows?

Yes, due to the inherent nature of winter weather and snowmobiling, all tours will proceed on cold, snowy, or rainy days. Hazardous weather conditions or safety factors may require Togwotee Snowmobile Adventures to cancel your trip; in such cases you will be rescheduled for a different day or offered a trip credit.

How to Spend the Perfect Weekend in Jackson Hole, Wyoming

Welcome to VERANDA's Perfect Weekend , where we show you how to make the most of 48 hours in one of our favorite destinations. This month, we’re headed to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, to create core memories amongst the mountains. Famous for its world-class outdoor adventures—ranging from skiing and snowboarding to fly fishing and wildlife tours—Jackson Hole is a nature lover’s paradise. Of course, you don’t have to be a winter sports athlete or an avid bird-watcher to enjoy the small town—in Jackson Hole, there’s something for everyone.

Recognized by its iconic town square, downtown Jackson Hole is roughly three square miles, making it an extremely walkable destination, even in snowy conditions. (Generally, Jackson Hole experiences snowfall from November through March, which is why the historic Western town is often thought to be a fabulous spring break destination for winter sports fans.) The square is outfitted with luxury shopping, various art galleries, a few real estate firms (for those looking to make their favorite vacation spot their official home away from home), restaurants serving delectable cuisine, and plenty of shops to pick up souvenirs of a place that’s bound to become one of your most beloved destinations.

While you might think that one weekend is more than enough time to explore the most lively part of town, it’s important to remember that some of the most amazing experiences that Jackson Hole offers lie beyond the town square. While we have an inkling that you’ll want to spend an entire week out West, ahead, find our recommendations for how to spend the perfect weekend in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

Friday Afternoon

Where many destinations have a primary focus, Jackson Hole is more of a pick-your-own-adventure type of place. As such, you’ll want to consider how you hope to spend your time while visiting.

If you plan to ski or snowboard during your visit, check into the Four Seasons Jackson Hole , which is located in Teton Village and offers unbeatable mountain access but is roughly 12 miles from the town square. Whether you book a room, suite, or private residence, you can look forward to relaxing with luxury king-size beds, stone gas fireplaces, and marble tubs—all while looking out at the picturesque mountain and valley views. It's a rustic, yet luxe retreat for anyone hoping for a brisk weekend away.

If you’re looking for stunning views but don’t require immediate slopeside access—and especially if you’re traveling in a group— Outpost has a plethora of beautiful properties, including a luxury collection of contemporary mountainside lodges and chateaus that accommodate up to 24 guests.

Meanwhile, if gorgeous architecture, wellness, and unmatched views are your priority, Amangani is the place to book. With its redwood and sandstone architecture and panoramic Teton backdrop (with an infinity pool stretching out toward the peaks), it's truly breathtaking. Just keep in mind that the property doesn't have immediate slopeside access. Its ski lounge is nestled 20 minutes away at Teton Village.

After you've checked in, head downtown to grab a bite and get a feel for the square. There, you’ll find the absolutely picturesque Persephone Bakery , where you can enjoy your cafe beverage of choice (including a top-notch oat milk iced matcha) alongside a delectable salad, sandwich, or soup. After lunch, drive or grab an Uber to The National Elk Refuge to partake in a quintessential winter experience: a National Elk Refuge sleigh ride , offered December through April. Tickets cost $38 and the experience—in which you're immersed with herds of resting elk—is worth every penny.

If witnessing elk doesn’t seem too exciting to you, there’s always the option to head over to Snow King Mountain for the Cowboy Coaster or an afternoon of leisurely snow tubing . Alternatively, you could book an appointment at the Four Seasons Spa for the most relaxing start to vacation.

Friday Evening

To start the evening on a high note, head over to Glorietta Trattoria , Jackson Hole’s newest and most adored Italian restaurant. While you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, the crostini with whipped ricotta, truffle honey, and hazelnuts; the burrata with fig and date jam; the fusilli gigante with spicy vodka sauce; and the tiramisu are particularly scrumptious. The craft cocktail menu is a hit, too.

Following dinner, make your way over to The Million Dollar Cowboy Bar . A glorified dive bar, the Cowboy Bar features saddle bar seats, pool tables, a dance floor, and perhaps best of all, cheap drinks. Just keep in mind, in the Wild West, bars don’t stay open as late and if there’s a big crowd, snagging an Uber home can be a challenge. We suggest planning ahead to avoid standing out in the cold.

Saturday Morning

Wake up early to get a head start on the day. We suggest heading to Cowboy Coffee for breakfast. The widely adored Western-themed coffee shop serves dozens of hot, iced, and specialty drinks, as well as smoothies, pastries, breakfast sandwiches, and more. (They also have adorable swag, so don’t blame us if you end up leaving with a Yeti tumbler.)

Saturday Afternoon

After breakfast, you’ll have to determine your top Jackson Hole adventure priority. If you want to hit the slopes, head to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort or Snow King Mountain. If you plan ahead, you’ll be able to enjoy discounted lift tickets . If you’re an expert skier or snowboarder, make sure to head up to Corbet’s Couloir . The world-renowned ski run has been a source of immense inspiration since the '60s. Keep in mind, though, it’s considered to be a challenge for even the most advanced professional athletes, so you may simply want to view the drop in person (as opposed to actually navigating it yourself).
