Republic of Congo

Republic of congo travel.

Not to be outshone by its ‘Big Brother’ ( Democratic Republic of the Congo – DRC ), the Republic of the Congo has claimed a spot in the top echelons of safari experiences in Africa. Three-quarters of the country is covered in the lush, dense Congo rainforest and bordered by the DRC,  Gabon , Cameroon, the Central African Republic, and Angolan enclave of Cabinda.

For those seeking to discover an alluring wildlife wonderland, the rich biodiversity of the “Second Lung of the World” is enclosed in a handful of national parks with Odzala, Conkouati, and the Lefini Faunal Reserve featuring most prominently. They offer encounters with unique species like the famed western lowland gorilla and hundreds of more species of different orders. The mighty Congo river glistens brightly across the country’s landscape. Originating in the highlands of the East African rift and crossing the equator twice, it snakes its way for more than 4,500 kilometres—making it the second-longest river in Africa and the ninth in the world—before ending in the Atlantic ocean.

Brazzaville stands proudly as the safe capital city of the Republic of the Congo. Here, visitors can explore the buzzing markets and purchase a variety of local souvenirs, as well as discover the country’s colonial history. International visitors to the Republic of the Congo are serviced by flights into  Brazzaville . Upon arrival, it is best to make use of pre-arranged transport and services by recognised operators as vehicle hire, with a driver, is expensive.

Congo

Despite  gorilla trekking  being the most popular attraction when planning a safari to the Republic of the Congo, the country has a variety of other activities on offer. Other natural wonders to marvel at include the Diosso Gorge that offers expansive views of the countryside, as well as the Loufoulakari Falls, situated at the confluence of the Congo Loufoulakari River. Some of the biggest tiger fish in the world can be reeled in at the Tiger Fish Congo Camp.

The capital of Brazzaville sometimes referred to as the ‘Little Paris of Africa’ provides an abundance of cultural experiences, from cheerful markets to delving deeper into the varied history. Travellers can also venture to Linzolo where the first Catholic Church was constructed by French priests in 1882. For a laid-back experience, an excursion to the seaside city of Pointe Noire is a must. Travellers can sip on a sundowner while taking in the sights and sounds of the Atlantic ocean.

It is in the Congo Basin, spanning the Republic of the Congo and five other countries in west equatorial Africa, that visitors will set eyes on the wild and wonderful creatures that are dependant on this natural phenomena for their existence. Unspoilt and genuinely wild safaris can be undertaken in Odzala National Park, Louana National Park, Conkouati Douli National Park, Nouabale-Ndoki National Park, and Lefini Faunal Reserve.

The most priceless of wildlife experiences are beyond question getting a glimpse into the unique world of the endangered western lowland gorilla. The posturing of the older yet still impressive silverbacks will be one for the memory bank.

During a trekking expedition, visitors are also bound to sight forest elephants and buffalos among the abundance of trees. More than 700 bird species and 892 different butterflies, of which 20 are endemic, sweep and dart across the skies of the Republic of the Congo. Closer to the country’s spectacular coastline, marine animals like whales, dolphins, and sea turtles are regularly spotted.

International tourism in the Republic of the Congo is seeing an upwards curve and there has subsequently been a marked improvement in accommodation facilities. Most of the more luxurious facilities, however, can still only be found in the larger towns. When venturing outside the concrete jungle, various eco-friendly camps have been developed.

A Comprehensive Guide to Congo Wildlife Safaris and Tours

A Comprehensive Guide to Congo Wildlife Safaris and Tours.

The Congo Basin rainforest is the second largest in the world, after the Amazon, and a biological hotspot of worldwide significance; here you can experience true immersion in nature. The lowland gorillas live in harmony with the forest elephants, forest-adapted hyenas, bongos, and a wide variety of birds in these verdant jungles. The Congo isn’t exactly a safari hotspot with plenty of facilities for visitors. The daring tourist will never forget the long and painful flights, 4×4 rides, and pirogue adventures that made this possible.

Wildlife in Congo

Ecotourists will be enchanted by the extraordinary variety of flora and fauna found in Odzala National Park in the heart of the northern Congo. The park is home to a wide variety of animals, including lowland gorillas, monkeys, elephants, spotted hyenas, lions, buffalo, bongos, leopards, and countless bird species. The Congo is home to several attractions, one of which is Nouabale-Ndoki National Park. Similarly varied is this virgin jungle in the country’s extreme north, which is home to no humans whatsoever. Lowland gorillas, forest elephants, crocodiles, and buffalo are just some of the animals that you may view up close and personal at Mbeli Bai.

Exploring the Fascinating Wildlife Animals of the Congo Rainforest

Among the world’s most biologically varied areas is the Congo Rainforest. Located in Central Africa, this enormous forest is home to some of the most unusual and interesting animals on the planet. It is the second-largest rainforest on Earth, spanning over 1.6 million square kilometers. Loss of habitat, illegal wildlife trade, and other human actions have put many of these species in danger of extinction.

In this post, we will examine the Congo Rainforest in further detail, focusing on the intriguing animals that live there, the most unusual species that are unique to the Congo, and the most prevalent dangers that these animals confront.

1. Gorillas

The gorillas of the Congo Rainforest are among the most famous creatures found there. The two main species of gorillas, the largest primates on Earth, are the eastern and western varieties. The majority of a gorilla’s diet consists of plant matter, including leaves, stems, and shoots. They commonly congregate in groups known as troops and are well-known for their sociable nature.

2. Chimpanzees

Additionally, the Congo Rainforest is home to chimpanzees. One of our closest living cousins, they share a tight relationship with humans. There is evidence that chimpanzees use tools to get food, adding to their reputation for intelligence. They also dwell in communities since they are sociable creatures.

The okapi is a fascinating and unusual mammal that can only be found in the rainforests of the Congo. Though related to giraffes, these diminutive creatures are smaller and have a shorter neck. The okapi is commonly known as the “forest giraffe” due to its unique pattern of spots and stripes on its coat. Herbs, fruits, and flowers make up their diet as herbivores.

4. Forest Elephants.

Forest elephants, a smaller variety of elephant native to the woodlands of central and western Africa, also call the Congo Rainforest their home. Elephants in the forest differ from their savannah counterparts in social organization and tusk straightness. In the rainforest environment, they play a crucial role as seed dispersers as well.

5. Bonobos.

Additionally, the Congo Rainforest is home to bonobos, a kind of ape. Although they share a common ancestor with chimpanzees, these primates are smaller and display distinct morphological traits. One name for bonobos is “hippie apes” because of their amiable nature and tendency toward cooperation. Threats to their survival include dwindling habitats and poaching.

6. Pygmy Hippopotamuses

Smaller than the typical hippopotamus, the pygmy hippopotamus lives in Africa. They frequent the areas around streams and rivers in the Congo Rainforest, where they feed on plants. Loss of habitat and poaching have put pygmy hippos on the endangered species list.

7. Congo Peafowl

One unique and colorful bird species that can only be found in the Congo Rainforest is the Congo Peafowl. The “African peafowl” gets its name from the distinctive pattern of green and blue feathers that this bird sports. The Congo peafowl is in danger due to the destruction of its habitat and the practice of trophy hunting.

8. Red River Hogs

The Congo Rainforest is home to a feral pig species known as the Red River Hog. Curved tusks and a reddish-brown coat are telltale signs of this species. Being omnivores, Red River Hogs consume a wide range of foods. Both habitat degradation and hunting pose threats to their populations, and they are also targeted for their meat.

9. African Forest Buffalo

Subspecies of the Cape Buffalo inhabiting the Congo Rainforest is known as the African Forest Buffalo. They congregate in large groups known as herds and eat mostly plants. Lions and leopards, among others, hunt African woodland buffaloes due of their reputation for violence.

10. African Forest Hedgehog

Insects and other small invertebrates make up the bulk of the African forest hedgehog’s diet. This nocturnal mammal faces extinction due to habitat degradation and poaching.

11. African Grey Parrot

The Congo Rainforest is home to the African Grey Parrot, a type of bird. Their intelligence and capacity to imitate human speech have brought them great fame. Aside from poaching and habitat degradation, the African grey parrot is a beloved pet bird.

Conservation of Endangered Species in the Congo Rainforest.

Numerous species of animals, such as bongo antelope, golden cats, forest buffalo, and many more, are in danger of going extinct due to their habitat in the Congo rainforest. The illegal wildlife trade and the hunting of endangered species for bushmeat continue to pose serious threats, as does the practice of unlawful poaching. Despite attempts by wildlife protection officials to crack down on poaching activities, the deep rainforest environment makes it tough to police armed paramilitary groups and commercial poachers.

In order to ensure the continuation of rainforest species that are in danger of extinction, conservation efforts have been launched by groups such as the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) . The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) assists local people in protecting forests, tracks the numbers of endangered species, and rehabilitates injured animals. Ensuring the future viability of the Congo’s diverse but fragile ecosystems against the threat of endangerment requires global efforts to obtain international financing and enforce protective legislation. But there’s still a long way to go, even with these groups’ finest attempts!

Best Time to Go on a Safari in The Republic of the Congo

In the Congo Basin, the climate is generally equatorial, meaning interchanging between two main seasons, the dry season and the wet season. Both seasons offer advantages and unique experiences; the dry season is typically recommended for first-time visitors due to better wildlife viewing opportunities and easier travel conditions, while the wet season appeals to those interested in photography, bird watching, and experiencing the rainforest's vibrant life.

(May to September)

  • Optimal for wildlife safaris as animals are more accessible to spot near water sources. The weather is more pleasant for tourists, with less rainfall and humidity, making it the best time for trekking lowland gorillas.
  • With the drier landscapes and ease of navigation comes the opportunity to experience the wildlife, the endangered gorillas, elephants and various birds.

(October to April)

  • Take advantage of the landscapes as they turn luscious and green, offering beautiful scenery. It's the best time for bird watching, with migratory birds arriving during this time, including swallows, swifts, and bee-eaters, and for seeing newborn animals, including the baby forest elephants.
  • This season is ideal for enthusiasts interested in the rich plant life, bird species, and the dramatic waterfalls and rivers at their peak.

The shy Okapi, eastern lowland gorillas and bonobos are just a few examples. At the moment, the greatest draw are gorillas.

Congo safaris

The country’s shortcomings, insecurity and poor infrastructure has not stopped adventurous travelers from visiting. Some of the national parks are well managed and receive thousands of visitors each year. The Virunga National Park is one example of a well-managed park. The tourism infrastructure in Virunga is of very high quality and a traveler should expect an amazing experience. There has also been massive deployment of security forces and park rangers in Virunga and Kahuzi Biega National Park to protect the park resources.

Congo Safaris – Best Places To Visit

Virunga National Park: Virunga National Park was gazetted in 1925 to protect the unique flora and fauna including mountain gorillas. It is the oldest national park in Africa with amazing wildlife and physical features like volcanoes, vegetation cover, crater lakes, streams and rivers which flow within the dense forests. The park is also home to volcanoes, the rare okapi, forest buffaloes, African elephants, spotted hyenas, jackals and birds. Virunga national park was part of the greater Virunga conservation area which included Uganda and Rwanda. The area was split and divided amongst  the three countries forming the Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda and Mgahinga National Park in Uganda among other wildlife sanctuaries. Congo remained with Virunga national park.

Congo is the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa and the second largest in the African continent. The country was formerly known as Zaire but later changed to what we now know as The Democratic Republic of Congo. The Bantu people are the dominant tribal group in the country while Lingala is the main language of communication. The Democratic Republic of Congo was colonized by Belgium and because of that has a heavy French influence. French is widely spoken and is an official language of communication.

Regardless of what is written in the press and the civil wars still affecting the north-eastern part of the country, the Democratic Republic of Congo is a country you must visit in your lifetime. The country has so much to offer and will become one of the leading tourism destinations in Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo is one of the few countries in Africa that still has vast areas with pristine and unspoiled wilderness. It is a country that allows you experience the Africa of old. A safari in Congo will take you to discover places rarely visited by tourists, dense forests, giant crater lakes with boiling magma, rare creatures like the okapi, bonobos and the amazing gorillas. The Democratic Republic of Congo is the only country where one can observe both mountain and lowland gorillas in the wild.

The capital Kinshasa is one of the most vibrant and interesting cities in Africa. With over 10 million people of various cultural backgrounds, Kinshasa allows the local people forget and live for the moment. You will find the affluent class living in the more developed areas while the less privileged in vast suburbs. Government offices are built at the center and in secluded suburbs with clean streets and modern infrastructure. Kinshasa has large shopping centers where you can taste spicy Congolese food and buy the authentic African attire. Other places to visit in the capital include the parliament building, the Musée National de Kinshasa and other prominent historical buildings.

Congo Safaris – Places to go to while on a Congo Wildlife tour

If you are planning to go for a safari in Congo, don’t hesitate. Not every part of the country is unsafe. National Parks like Virunga have invested a lot in ensuring that tourists are protected. An army of Rangers patrol the park and protect tourists at all times. You will come back from your trip with some of the most beautiful memories of Africa. Let’s discuss some of the places to visit while on a Congo safari

A safari in Congo

Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary: Lola ya Bonobo means “paradise of bonobo” is Lingala. This sanctuary is located in the capital Kinshasa. Bonobos or pygmy chimpanzee are only found in the Democratic Republic of Congo. They are the closest relatives to humans along with the common chimpanzee. Extensive poaching for bush meat forced the government and conservationists to open up this sanctuary to protect individuals rescued from poachers or left orphaned. The Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary is one of the most visited places in Kinshasa. The sanctuary sits on 30 hectares of forest hence allowing the primates to live in an environment similar to the forests.

About Okapi Wildlife Reserve.

Congo is one of the African countries that is highly endowed and to be specific it is the most endowed country on this continent. Amongst the parks that this country boasts of is the Okapi national park which occupies over 13,700 km of Ituri forest in north Eastern part of DRC.

This Wildlife Reserve was established in 1992 and listed as a World Heritage Site in 1996.This reserve has majorly helped in protecting the habitat of the okapi and preserve rare plant and animal life, as well as the lifestyle and culture of indigenous people.

Endangered Species in Okapi Wildlife Reserve.

The Reserve contains 101 mammal species and 376 species of documented birds. The population of the endemic species of Okapi , a forest giraffe, is estimated at 5,000 individuals. Among the endemic mammals of the forest in the north-east of the DRC identified in the Reserve, are the aquatic genet and the giant genet . The Reserve provides refuge to 17 species of primates , the highest number for an African forest, including 7,500 chimpanzees.

This reserve is home and habitat to the Okapi, chimpanzees and over 13 species of other primates. It also houses other forest animals like elephants, leopard, forest buffalo, bongo antelope, water chevrotain and a wide variety of birds and insects, are among the wildlife harbored in the Reserve.

The Ituri forest is not only a habitat for animals and primates, but also the cultural center of the Mbuti and Efe pygmies who are true hunter-gatherers and deep forest-dwellers living traditional lifestyles as they have for centuries. Their activities generally enrich the overall composition of the forest by providing pockets of secondary vegetation a source of plants on which the okapi feed.

This reserve has a lot of projects that strive to see that it is not encroached upon and ill utilized which include the Okapi Conservation Project whose presence in the region and its role as a coordinator and supporter of the Reserve has helped to provide stability for the Mbuti and Efe pygmies to continue to live off the bounty of the forest as they have for thousands of years.

The Okapi Conservation Project (OCP) was founded in 1987 for the protection of the okapis and their habitat. The okapi are only found in DRC and are seen as the major flagship species of the Ituri Forest. The OCP has about one hundred staff members and one hundred and ten government rangers under the direction of the Institute in Congo for the Conservation of Nature. The Okapi Conservation Project is partnered with the Wildlife Conservation Network. In 1992 the project helped create the Okapi Wildlife Reserve encompassing 13,700 square kilometers of the Ituri Forest and in 1996, it was designated as a United Nations World Heritage Site.

Mission Africa Safaris

Congo Safaris

Congo Safaris are not very  popular with tourists because exaggerated reports from the media has had a negative impact by scaring away potential visitors. It is true that the country formerly known as Zaire has experienced prolonged periods of instability caused by armed rebellions, corruption and poor governance structures. In fact caution should be exercised while visiting certain parts of Congo which hosts the largest UN peacekeeping mission.

However we cannot afford to generalize the security situation in DR Congo as we are talking about very large country. Not all parts of the country is unsafe as it is sometimes claimed. The government and park wardens take the security of tourists seriously and visitors should expect to undergo several security protocols and be escorted by armed rangers within and outside the parks. Mountain Gorilla trekking in Congo is usually suspended if the management of the Virunga national park deem it unsafe for tourists.

Congo Wildlife Safari

The capital Kinshasa with its strong diplomatic community and over 10 million residents has interesting places to visit such as the “Symphonies Naturelles” with its cool forests and beautiful paths.  While in Kinshasa, one can marvel at the street art or visit historical buildings, the Musée National de Kinshasa, the snake farm (serpents du Congo) and the central Market of Matongé (Marché Central). Mission Africa Safaris is pleased to organize Congo safaris. Many of our tour packages involve combined safaris that involves hoping between DR Congo, Uganda and Rwanda.

Congo Wildlife Safaris – Where to go for a safari in Congo

Kahuzi-Biega National Park: The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is named after the mountains Kahuzi and Biega and is located in the south of Kivu.  A UNESCO World heritage site, the Parc National de Kahuzi-Biéga is famous for habituated Lowland gorilla trekking . The Eastern Lowland Gorillas have been threatened by poaching for a while now but efforts by government, conservationists and other well-wishers have now increased their numbers. Unlike mountain gorillas, tracking eastern lowland gorillas gorillas is relatively easy. Gorilla Permits to Kahuzi Biega can be got on short notice and the need to trek long distances on steep mountain slopes is avoided. Apart from gorillas, visitors on  Congo wildlife safari can go to spot elephants, chimpanzee and several species of antelope.

Congo Tours

Garamba National Park: Though less visited, this is one of Africa’s great national parks and a UNESCO World heritage site. Visitors on a tour of the park should expect stunning views of unending African savanna and grasslands. The park is home to giraffes, hippos, rhinoceros, antelope and several species of birds. Unfortunately, the stunning collection of large mammals found in the park is threatened by massive poaching. Caution should be taken while visiting the park on a safari as rebels and armed groups from neighboring countries have sometimes taken refuge in the deeper areas of the park.

Salonga National Park: This is Africa’s largest rain forest and is one of the many UNESCO World heritage sites in the country. The sheer amount and variety of fauna and flora makes visiting this park a must. Visitors will spot peacocks, forest elephants, dwarf chimpanzee and the slender-snorted crocodile among many more species.

Congo Safaris

There are many other activities that visitors can get involved in while on a wildlife tour in Congo that may not have been described in detail above. Some of them include:-

Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking & Safari Tours

The name Congo evokes images of a vast tropical jungle cut through by the mysterious river for which it is named. Who hasn’t dreamed of setting foot there? Unfortunately, much of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the region’s largest country, is unsafe for travel. One exception is Kahuzi-Biega National Park, where eastern lowland gorillas can be tracked in the wild with relative ease as an outing from neighboring Rwanda. Elsewhere, Virunga National Park was open for mountain gorilla trekking and Nyiragongo volcano climbs for several years prior to closing in 2020, but it looks unlikely to reopen anytime soon.

6 Questions About Congo (DRC) Gorilla Trekking and Safari Tours

Ariadne van Zandbergen

Answered by

Ariadne van zandbergen.

wildlife safaris in congo

What are the main tourist attractions?

“The main attraction of Eastern DRC is gorilla trekking. The region is home to two subspecies of these endangered gentle giants. This includes the eastern lowland gorilla, which is endemic to the DRC (it occurs nowhere else in the world) and can only be tracked in Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Kahuzi-Biega is a short distance northwest of the city of Bukavu, which lies at the southern tip of Lake Kivu on the border with Rwanda. Tracking eastern lowland gorillas is just as rewarding as visiting the better-known mountain gorillas. Indeed, some might say it is actually more so, as they are even larger than their mountain-dwelling cousins, and low visitor numbers at Kahuzi-Biega make for a more adventurous and less-touristy experience. Eastern DRC is also an important stronghold for mountain gorillas. These live on the bamboo-covered slopes of the Virunga Mountains, a scenic volcanic range that extends into Rwanda and Uganda. Unfortunately, although mountain gorilla trekking is offered in the other two countries, the Congolese portion of the Virungas (protected in Virunga National Park) has been closed to tourism since March 2020 and is likely to remain off-limits for the foreseeable future. When Virunga NP does reopen for gorilla trekking, other activities are likely to include climbs of volcanic Mt Nyiragongo, which contains the world’s largest lava lake, and relaxing on Lake Kivu’s beautiful Tchegera Island.”

How does gorilla trekking in DR Congo compare to other countries?

“The gorilla trekking experience in Kahuzi-Biega (and when it reopens, Virunga NP) is very similar to what is offered in Rwanda and Uganda. The same one-hour time limit to spend with the gorillas applies. However, as visitor numbers are still very low, the Kahuzi-Biega experience feels more exclusive and the setting is more remote. The number of permits allocated per gorilla group is only four to six (less than the eight permits allocated per group in Uganda and Rwanda). A big difference between trekking in Kahuzi-Biega and doing the same activity in Uganda or Rwanda is that you will be visiting eastern lowland gorillas as opposed to mountain gorillas. Based on recent reports, trekking conditions are generally easier in DRC than in Rwanda or Uganda, and you are unlikely to have to walk for more than an hour to locate a habituated group. Last but not least, a gorilla trekking permit in DRC costs US$400 per person as opposed to US$800 in Uganda or US$1,500 in Rwanda.”

Is a DR Congo safari safe?

“Visiting Kahuzi-Biega has been considered safe for a few years now. In order to attract visitors to this park, security measures have been put in place to make a day or overnight return visit from Rwanda very straightforward and secure. That said, the DRC has a long history of political turbulence and unrest, and most other parts of the country, including Virunga NP, cannot be regarded as safe at the time of writing. Even where Kahuzi-Biega is concerned, the security situation might change, so check with your tour operator before booking.”

Can I extend my East African safari with a trip to Congo (DRC)?

“Most people don’t visit DRC as a stand-alone trip. Instead it makes a perfect extension to a classic safari in Kenya or Tanzania. A short flight from either gets you to Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. From there you can fly or arrange to be driven to the Rwandan border town of Kamembe (also known as Rusizi/Cyangugu), which lies on the Lake Kivu shore near the Congolese port city of Bukavu. Some operators offer gorilla trekking in Kahuzi-Biega as a day trip from Kamembe, while others will arrange overnight accommodations in Bukavu or closer to the park. A gorilla trek in DRC also slots well into an extended holiday in Rwanda, where you can go chimp trekking in Nyungwe National Park, which is very close to Kamembe and Bukavu. You can also enjoy a couple of nights in Akagera National Park, the country’s Big Five (lion, leopard, buffalo, elephant and rhino) destination. Wildlife densities in Akagera are not comparable to the most famous parks in East Africa, but this off-the-beaten-track destination is incredibly scenic and rewarding in its own right.”

How much will a DR Congo safari cost?

“Most visitors to Kahuzi-Biega opt for a 3-day gorilla trekking package out of Rwanda’s capital city Kigali. This typically costs US$1,200 to US$1,500 per person. Another possibility is a 4-day package that also includes chimp trekking in Rwanda’s Nyungwe National Park, which you pass through on the way between Kigali and Kahuzi-Biega. This will add around US$600 to the price. A variety of longer tours incorporating a visit to Kahuzi-Biega are also available.”

What is the best time of the year to visit DR Congo?

“The best time to visit Eastern DRC is during the Dry season from June to September. The area has a very wet climate and it can rain at any time, but June to September is drier and the forest trails tend to be less slippery. March to April and October to November are the peaks of the short and long rains. The drier period between the long and short rains, from December to February, is a great time to travel too. It shouldn’t be too wet and there are very few visitors around at this time. Whenever you visit, make sure you bring lots of waterproof clothing, and be prepared to get wet a few times.”
