Ladies and gentlemen, that is most certainly how you put on a rock show. – Backseat Mafia

W.A.S.P. are here to provide a good time and to celebrate their legacy, and they do both of these things in spades tonight. – Metal Talk

“When you’re putting on a show as enjoyable as this, it’s no surprise why people keep coming back.” – Moshville

About W.A.S.P. [Text Wrapping Break]Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world. From the very beginning, in the small venues of Los Angeles California, and later to the numerous countries worldwide that banned these Winged Assassins from performing live, the Band’s unique style of Shock and Rock caused Religious organizations, Local City Councils, Parliaments, and the Washington D.C. Senate to hold hearings in an effort to bar this group from selling records and trashing stages everywhere they played.

The band’s founding member, frontman Blackie Lawless, has led the group as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold out shows across the globe for 4 decades.

Joined by bassist Mike Duda and guitarist Doug Blair, whose tenures in the band span 26 and 18 years respectively, along with drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester, will take the Band and the Fans back to where it all started. Complete with the stage show extravaganza that many fans never saw live.

Witness Live the Winged Assassins spectacle of “SHOCK and ROLL” as they take you Back…Back to the Beginning!

W.A.S.P. are one of the most enduring glam metal bands of all time. They formed in 1982 and like many of their peers, hail from Los Angeles, California, USA. Their durability comes as much from their shock rock inspired image as it does from their numerous studio albums.

It might be difficult to fathom, but in the L.A Hair metal scene of the 1980’s, W.A.S.P were widely considered “the outrageous ones”. Bear in mind that this is a scene where Mötley Crüe could get in a snorting contest with Ozzy Osbourne ending with Osbourne snorting a line of ants. At the time however, W.A.S.P were the ones considered “mad, bad and dangerous to know”.

W.A.S.P was formed from the ashes of another band called Circus Circus. When they split up the bands guitarists, Blackie Lawless and Randy Piper, wanted to continue playing together. So after Lawless spent a brief period of time playing with Nikki Sixx's band London, the two recruited Rik Fox, and Tony Richards on bass and drums to become W.A.S.P.

However, this first incarnation didn’t last all that long. They released one single, entitled “Animal (F*ck Like A Beast)” which was the beginning of their bad reputation, and then Fox left to play with Yngwie Malmsteen and the replacement bassist also left in short order. This left Lawless to take up the bass and Chris Holmes was drafted in on the lead guitar.

This line up stuck, and by 1984 the band had signed to Capitol Records. Unlike many of their peers W.A.S.P never had the astonishing chart success that the likes of GNR and the Crüe commanded, but their debut album still sold 500,000 copies and their further records sold handsomely while courting no shortage of controversy among parent associations.

Until 1989 that is, when their album “The Headless Children” would stall a number 47 on the Billboard charts and then sail off soon afterwards. Chris Holmes also left the band to be with his wife Lita Ford. The band was in need of some time off, and Lawless began work on a solo album. However, under pressure from both promoters and fans he decided to release the record as a W.A.S.P album. This was, it’s fair to say, a good move.

The resulting record, “The Crimson Idol”, was immediately hailed as the bands best work and the band were back on track. Since then, the bands work has been surprisingly deep for a band whose name is said to stand for “We Are Sexual Perverts”. But everything is more interesting when you look a little closer, and W.A.S.P is no exception. These guys are still on the top of their game, and every metalhead would do well to see them as soon as possible.

Live reviews

While this is the decade that many 80’s bands are celebrating their 30th anniversaries by touring, there aren’t many who can stake the claim of not having stopped recording and touring since their glory days- one such band is W.A.S.P. The West Coast hair-metallers have been going steady since their self-titled debut in 1984, which sealed their place among other LA-originated greats of the era like Guns N’ Roses, Van Halen and Quiet Riot. W.A.S.P are known for their shock-value lyrics and onstage antics, and even 30 years down the line, they don’t appear to have gotten any less tongue-in-cheek provocative, particularly the ever-charismatic frontman, guitarist and keyboardist, Blackie Lawless.

As an 80’s metal nut, I was excited to catch W.A.S.P. on the opening night of their 30th anniversary tour at The Forum in London a couple of years ago, and they pulled out all the stops, delivering a blisteringly epic two-hour set. They focused on some of their classic material in the first two ‘Acts’ of the show, with hits like "L.O.V.E. Machine", "Wild Child", "Hellion", and "Scream Until You Like It" to kick things off, which had the whole black leather-clad crowd jumping and screaming along to every word. The finale of the show was dedicated to more recent work, such as the headbanging "Chainsaw Charlie (Murders in the New Morgue)”, and “Widowmaker”, for which Lawless and bassist Mike Dupke swapped instruments, just like back in the old days. A fun-filled, hair-thrashing show from some of the greats!

Totally awesome show and the band was truly on fire! Blackie Lawless’ voice was in great shape. W.A.S.P. played all the songs from ”The Crimson Idol” album plus a shorter set of hits including ”L.O.V.E. Machine”, ”Wild Child”, ”Golgotha” and ”I Wanna Be Somebody”.

Go and see W.A.S.P. if you have the chance! Totally worth it...worth every penny. Recommended!

W.A.S.P. wrapped up its first U.S. tour in 10 years with a sold-out show on December 11 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles. This marked the 18th sold-out shows for the U.S. tour, which kicked off in late October. W.A.S.P. 's performances included the return of the band's classic song "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" , which hadn't been played live in over 15 years.

Looking back on the U.S. tour, Lawless said: "There have been a number of times in my life when I was caught between agony and ecstasy, many times while either making a record that had great meaning for me or a tour that was truly memorable. But the U.S. tour that we just finished has been a joy I've not felt since the first tour we did in '84-'85. When that first tour was over, I felt like a little kid that had his brand new toy taken away from him. When I got up on Elvis [ Blackie 's mic stand] at the end of the last show finale, I stayed up on him longer than I normally do. I held that pose for what seemed like forever, and in my mind, it was a blur and I was flashing in my head all the shows we had just done and how desperately I wished this tour would just keep going and going. I've never wanted something not to end so badly before… even more than the first world tour in '84-'85.

"I've been blessed with a good memory, and as I was on Elvis , I could see the faces of many of you that were at these shows. In a flash it flooded my head and I just wanted to stay up there.

"When we played the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, it had a profound effect on myself and the whole band. We knew we were standing on sacred ground. Where I was standing and singing was the exact spot where Loretta Lynn 's body had been lying at her funeral just a couple of weeks before. She was music royalty; she was true greatness…. the Coal Miner's Daughter. That was an emotional night for us and from that moment on for the rest of the tour, we all kept talking about how we absolutely did not want this tour to end. In these shows we got an awful lot of love from all you guy's and it was so heavy when we'd stand on stage it felt like we could cut it with a knife. Something truly special happened between all of you and us on this tour. More than I've ever felt before in my entire career.

"Additionally, I must take a couple of minutes to address the meet-and-greets. I had never done these before. Especially not where I could have a real dialog with those who were there. In the course of the 30-plus gatherings, I learned more about your true feelings than I've ever learned before. Someone might say I should have started doing them several years ago. If I did, I don't believe it would have had the same effect because the things I was hearing from you was an accumulation of years and years of you studying those lyrics and having the space to let them speak to you that only time can do. Time to let you really reflect on how it's spoken to your lives. The looks on your faces when you spoke was at times for me a frustration that is difficult to express, because mere words cannot paint the raw emotions I was feeling from many of you. And I'm supposed to be the writer here!"

Lawless has led W.A.S.P. as its lead vocalist and primary songwriter since its beginning. His unique brand of visual, social and political comment took the group to worldwide heights and sold millions of records alongside a legacy of sold-out shows across the globe for four decades. He is joined by bassist Mike Duda and guitarist Doug Blair , whose tenures in the band span 28 and 17 years respectively, along with drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester .

W.A.S.P. 's latest release was "ReIdolized (The Soundtrack To The Crimson Idol)" , which came out in February 2018. It was a new version of the band's classic 1992 album "The Crimson Idol" , which was re-recorded to accompany the movie of the same name to mark the 25th anniversary of the original LP's release. The re-recorded version also features four songs missing from the original album.

W.A.S.P. 's most recent studio album of all-new original material was 2015's "Golgotha" .

W.A.S.P. 's first live performance since December 2019 took place on July 23, 2022 at Skansen in Stockholm, Sweden.

W.A.S.P. is in the middle of its massive European leg of the 40th-anniversary world tour, with upcoming shows taking place in Spain, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Germany and more before wrapping on May 18 in Sofia, Bulgaria at Universidada Sports Hall.

W.A.S.P. to Play Their First Album in Full on 2024 Fall Tour

W.A.S.P. will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their self-titled debut by performing the album in full and in order on their fall 2024 Album ONE Alive tour.

The 39-city tour will kick off Oct. 26 in San Luis Obispo and conclude Dec. 14 in Los Angeles. Death Angel and Unto Others will support W.A.S.P. on all dates, except as noted below. Ticket presales begin on May 29th at 10 a.m. local time, you can get more information at WASPnation.com .

Lawless has reportedly recovered from surgery to treat two herniated discs and a broken vertebra, injuries that forced him to cancel the band's planned 2023 tour.

Released on Aug. 17, 1984, the gold-selling W.A.S.P. is home to songs such as "I Wanna Be Somebody," "On Your Knees" and "The Flame." "It was an angry record made by an angry band," singer Blackie Lawless declared in a press release announcing the tour. "It was a record that not only reflected the attitude of the band members who made it, but also a record that reflected its time."

Before the release of W.A.S.P ., the Parents Music Resource Center added the song "Animal (Fuck Like a Beast)" to their "Filthy 15" list of "morally objectionable" songs. As as result Capitol Records pulled the track from the record, although it was returned to its rightful opening spot for a 1998 reissue.

Citing his religious convictions, Lawless removed "Animal" from the group's set lists in 2006, but brought it back for the band's 2022 40th anniversary tour. "There's a part of me that says it's already out there," Lawless told Eddie Trunk prior to the tour's start. "You can't put the genie back in the bottle. Do I owe it to the fan base to really make this a true retrospect of what we've done?"

Few Bands in the history of Rock N’ Roll have ever incited the love, the hate, the raw emotional effect this Band has had on the world.

Along with bassist Mike Duda and lead guitarist Doug Blair, whose tenures in the band are 29 and 26 years respectively, W.A.S.P. is joined by long-time drummer extraordinaire Aquiles Priester.

Lawless and company will deliver the ultimate incredible spectacle, bringing W.A.S.P.’s most colorful history to life by performing this revered album in its entirety… ONE more time… ONE last time… Album ONE Alive!

W.A.S.P. Stings Orlando On Their 40th Anniversary Tour

wasp tour vorband

Anticipation. Some think of the old ketchup commercial when they hear the word, others might think of when they were awaiting their first child. But many like me had the immense feeling of anticipation for months when the dates for the 40th-anniversary tour for W.A.S.P. were announced.

After not playing a full tour of the United States in over 10 years, Blackie Lawless who is the founder and front-man of W.A.S.P. announced on January 12 th  “For over 10 years we have not toured on U.S. soil. But starting October 28th, 2022… we return. 10 years I’d want, 10 years I’ve cussed, 10 years I’d lust to return…. To my homeland… and be a Wild Child, a Love Machine, to be Blind in Texas, On Your Knees and Headless.”

He also stated that they would be bringing previous tourmates from decades past in Armored Saint. The two bands go all the way back to their first show together in May of 1983 in Los Angeles.

Prior to the Orlando stop, to say this tour hasn’t been a huge success would be an understatement. Most of the dates in the past and in the future have been sold out to the surprise of promoters. Most of them in the past thought W.A.S.P. would not be able to sell tickets anymore in the States and boy were they wrong to the chagrin of Blackie. “Promoters didn’t think this band could sell tickets anymore,” he told  Appetite for Distortion . “We were being offered stuff that wasn’t very good, and we didn’t want to do that because the production that we wanted to do was way bigger.

Well on Saturday night at the Plaza Live, the packed house was served up a 3-hour sonic blast full of nostalgia and metal starting with Armored Saint who took the stage about 30 minutes late due to meet and greets, etc. with W.A.S.P. Most of the fans were ok with the later start especially after some information was divulged about a controversial topic these days in playing to tracks but I’ll address that later.

Armored Saint came out to “Deliver the Goods” by Judas Priest and started off their set by playing “Reign of Fire” from Symbol of Salvation. The album was released in 1988 and I consider their best and as close to a perfect hard rock metal album as there is. I know, what a fanboy, but it’s true and others do agree.

From there, Armored Saint played their first of the two singles that were released from the Punching The Sky album in 2020 with “End of the Attention Span.” Such a great song that defines our society today.

Vocalist John Bush was his usual powerhouse self and showed no ill effects from his recent bout of whatever that had him miss a few shows.

The rest of the band was completely booming off the ceilings of the old theatre. Drummer Gonzo Sandoval and his Drums of Thunder were just that and his playing was causing rattling up in the rafters and made the floor shake.

The next song was a bit of a surprise to me “Nervous Man” but then Armored Saint went to another fan favorite in “Last Train Home” from Symbol. By this time, the whole theatre was packed as the line around the building was huge on arrival and people waited and partied old-school style in their cars until the line dissipated a bit. Some of us were getting worried that the show could have been oversold but thankfully there wasn’t a Fire Marshall in sight.

It was great to see the metal community joined once again in a packed house and thankfully the venue opened the doors up especially in the balcony because it was Africa hot in there and it was sucking some energy out of the crowd.

After “Chemical Euphoria” and “Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants” Armored Saint’s dual axe attack was in full battle mode during the title track from the highly underrated Win Hands Down album.  Guitarists Phil Sandoval and Jeff Duncan took turns shredding the leads while Joey Vera pulsated the bass in perfect time with Gonzo on the back line. It’s a great song that takes you on a journey and it shows a fully revitalized band back at their songwriting peak.

After a 30-minute set change over which is pretty standard these days and with fans with banners hanging high and low, Blackie Lawless and W.A.S.P. hit the stage like a swarm.  They started the set with a medley of four songs “On Your Knees” “The Flame” “The Torture Never Stops” and the perfect theme for the night and stage show with “Inside The Electric Circus.”

In an interview, Lawless stated that his time as a child living near Tampa, FL was the inspiration for the stage design on this tour to be likened to a 1930s-era dark carnival (there is a town near Tampa named Gibsonton that is known for off-season circus performers to live in and around).

Lawless said he was fascinated watching the performers practice (mostly trapeze artists), “…So the whole idea of the circus has been something that’s really been part of my makeup. He continued to say that in addition to the carnival setting, the stage design would also encompass “…part Road Warrior and part voodoo ceremony.”

Circus signs hung from scaffolding and the lighting rigs as video screens played images and videos with red and blue lights emblazoning the stage, W.A.S.P. took the crowd on a journey to the past with the next track in L.O.V.E. Machine. This was the first of many times that the whole crowd joined Blackie in singing the chorus. This was a perfect lead into arguably their most well-known song in “Wild Child.” This was a huge song on MTV and it blared through many a car window in the mid-’80s.

The set slowed down a bit with Blackie Lawless’ opus in “The Idol” which transitioned to “The Misconceptions of Me.” Both songs dive into Blackie’s past with his family and various tribulations in life and you feel like you are on a musical roller coaster. It’s so powerful and to see it live once again after so many years and with such conviction was impressive. Especially seeing that Blackie is 66 years old and handling most of the vocals with guitarist Doug Blair and bassist Mike Duda handling harmonies and backups.

A big scuttlebutt during the early tour stops was the accusations that Blackie was using lead vocal tracks during the show. Prior to the show a fan asked Blackie if they were using them and he said “To answer your question, yes, we are  using backing tracks,” he responded (as transcribed by  BLABBERMOUTH.NET ). “You wanna know why?

“When we go into a studio — and let me clarify that statement; that’s me singing — but when we go in a studio, we do choruses, we double, triple, quadruple the vocals,” he continued. “So my feelings were when I listened to live  YouTube [recordings of our shows] and we weren’t doing that, it sounded thin. When we started supplementing it, it sounded better. “Now, in defense, I guess maybe what you’re asking is, is it fair for a band to go out and use  only  those? No, that is not fair.

“Like I said, I take a lot of pride in what I do, for the lead vocals that I do, but when it comes to vocals or when it comes to orchestration…

If you were looking for it, you could tell that they were using some backup vocals, but it didn’t matter or take away from the show.  It just made the sound a bit fuller, especially on the next song “Chainsaw Charlie,” which is about W.A.S.P.s’ early record contract dealings, etc.

This song encompasses everything about hard rock and metal, dual guitar leads from Blackie and Doug Blair, booming drums and bass and powerhouse vocals, and last but not least, a revved-up chainsaw.

During “Chainsaw Charlie” Blackie, started rocking his immense microphone stand he affectionately calls Elvis back and forth to the beat of drummer Aquiles Priester . Elvis has a microphone attached to it with a terminator skull-like head, crossbones, and motorcycle handlebars and foot pegs that Blackie uses for different levels of elevation.

wasp tour vorband

It is arguably the most recognizable microphone stand you will see except for maybe Steven Tyler’s with his bandanas.

W.A.S.P. closed out their main set with another fan favorite in “Blind in Texas” and took a brief break where the video screens showed text regarding censorship and played the audio with the battle with the PMRC. This was the introduction to “Animal,” the controversial song that was the second one to have a label on it from the group. The PMRC put a list of songs they deemed controversial and problematic to the youth of the times. Their list was called the Filthy Fifteen.“ This list had the opposite effect as teens went and bought some of the albums just because of the stickers.

W.A.S.P. combined “Animal” with their version of the Who’s “The Real Me” which had considerable radio airplay and up until this point It seemed like no one had left the venue as I was moving throughout the crowd for different vantage points.

Every fan in the stands knew what the finale would be with another huge rock anthem in “I Wanna Be Somebody.”  The chorus blasted from the stage to the crowd and back with Blackie smiling. He engaged with the crowd during the performance when he got off of Elvis and he proved once again that W.A.S.P. is a viable entity in the United States.

The kids who loved the songs back in the 80s now bring their kids and they love and sing the songs also. Will there be additional W.A.S.P. tours in the upcoming years? Only Blackie knows that answer, but from the looks of the crowd and the smiles as they left the venue, most if not all, will buy another ticket and be welcomed back to the Electric Circus.
