Arm yourself with one of the best mountain bike tool kits for that fresh-out-of-the-box feeling on every ride. Certain jobs are tricky and require specialist tools – servicing some suspension components, for example – but beneath all the shims and hydraulics, the modern mountain bike is still a relatively simple vehicle to work on. And with so many video tutorials readily available, it’s never been easier to DIY.

Of course it would be nice to have the principal thing being to have one of the best mountain bike workstands – but the tool kits below are the basics required to start a home workshop. In addition, we’d recommend checking out our buyer’s guides to the best multi-tools for fixing your bike on the trail , and the best floor pumps and tubeless inflators for your home workshop.

Birzman Studio Tool Box

Birzman’s Studio Tool box has everything you need, and some tools you didn’t even know you needed.

1. Birzman Studio Tool Box

Best tool kit for mountain bikers.

W eight: 7.91kg | 37 tools | Size: 470 x 370 x 130mm | Rating: 10/10

  • Huge array of tools, with some excellent specialist items
  • Removable tray for working on
  • Tyre levers don’t feel very strong
  • Cassette lockring tool can’t be used on RockShox fork caps

The Birzman Studio Tool Box houses its contents in a briefcase, and it’s rammed full, with an extra layer of tools stored in a removable tray that doubles as a work surface. In total there’s a generous 37 tools, and more importantly for mountain bikers, it’s packed with useful items. Take, for example, the Disc Brake Gap Indicator. It’s a thin butterfly of aluminium that inserts between your brake pads and rotor to ensure drag-free rolling. There’s also a pad spreader tool and rotor truing fork, meaning that all your disc brake needs (barring a bleed kit) are covered. On top of that there’s a saw guide for cutting fork steerer tubes, a headset star nut installation tool and a dead blow hammer. The cutters are excellent and there’s also a needle nose plier with end cap crimping tool and diagonal pliers that are ideal for snipping zip ties. The split link pliers make removing your chain a doddle and there’s even a valve core remover, tape measure and half round file. Easily the best tool kit on the market.

Unior Tools Pro Home Kit

2. Unior Tools Pro Home Kit

Best tool kit for working in the field.

W eight: 4.48kg | 34 tools | Size: N/A | Rating: 9/10

  • Tight tolerances on the tools
  • Quality shot-peened finish
  • Manufactured in Europe
  • Beautiful cutters
  • Fully waterproof box for working in the field
  • Foam compartments don’t hold tools tight in transit
  • Pro socket handle could be a torque wrench for this much cash
  • Split link pliers not double sided

Unior’s Pro Home kit is a cut above in terms of quality, and with individual ball-end Allen keys and a better spread of Torx keys. This addresses almost every concern we had with the previous 1600 CN kit. Although all the tools are top notch, that makes it all the more annoying that the foam inserts don’t keep the tools stable enough in transit. That said, the hard plastic carry box is both dustproof and waterproof and lays everything out in a logical fashion when folded open.

Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit

Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit folds out and hangs on a workstand.

3. Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit

Best for mobile mechanics.

W eight: 3.43kg | 19 tools | Size: 330 x 270 x 57mm | Rating: 9/10

  • Sumptuous quality
  • Useful hanging facility
  • Room to expand
  • Lacks some basic wrenches as well as chain pliers and a torque wrench

With its fold-out soft binder case, the Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit resembles the kind of set-up a pro team mechanic would use at a race. Once folded out it can be strapped to a workstand (such as the Feedback Sports Recreational ), keeping all the tools neatly to hand. This is a high quality kit that any tool fetishist would drool over. Details like the dual sided pick make it stand out from the crowd – perfect for opening up the ends of gear housing and removing seals from cartridge bearings. There’s also a superb little valve core remover and the long, sturdy tyre levers are excellent. All the tools have either a comfortable, rubberised grip or a beautiful polished chrome finish with rounded edges that make using them a joy.

The cable cutters worked well and include an integrated end cap crimp, while the chain tool has a neat, sprung-loaded cradle. On the end of the BB spanner is the cassette lockring tool. It’s open ended, so it can be used to remove RockShox air caps. The main omission is a set of individual Allen and Torx keys, but even so, the Feedback Sports Team Edition is a beautiful, functional and portable tool kit.

What to look for in the best mountain bike tool kits

Bit of blue for the rads

Buying a tool kit is often the cheapest and easiest way to start your home workshop.

Buy complete or build your own?

It’s possible to build up all the tools you need on a piecemeal basis, buying whatever you need to complete a specific task as and when necessary. But this tends to be an expensive way to do things. The alternative is to buy a complete tool kit; these tend to be better value for money, come with tools that you may not have considered buying, and all packaged neatly in a case that keeps them neat and clean and easy to transport, so you can sling it in the car for trips away.

For a modern mountain bike, these tool kits need to include the following: Allen keys from 2mm to 10mm; Torx keys, including T10, T25, T30; Chain breaker; Cassette tool (ideally compatible with RockShox forks); Chain whip; BB tool; Split link pliers; tyre levers; screwdrivers; Spoke key; Cable cutters.

What tools do I need?

Absolutely vital, the Allen key, or hex key, usually comes in either L-shape form or on a three-way Y tool. The L-shape with a ball-end is the most useful, as it lets you access awkward areas and exert enough torque to remove stubborn fasteners. 2mm, 2.5mm, 3mm, 4mm, 5mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm are needed.

Image of MTB tools on blue background

Allen keys are the stirring spoon of the mechanical kitchen.

Increasingly present on modern bikes, the Torx key uses a star-shape interface that engages with a larger surface area and is less likely to slip. On a bike, the most used sizes are T10, T25 and T30.

Jobsworth Bike Tool Kit 48 piece

A chain tool is not as essential as it once was due to the introduction of quick links, but it’s still useful to have.

Chain breaker

Used to shorten new chains and remove bent links, the chain tool drives the rivet out of the link. The driver pin should be replaceable, the tool should hold the chain securely and adjust to different widths, and there should be a cradle that lets you remove stiff links.

Unior Tools Pro Home Kit

A quality set of cable cutters is a must-have.

Cable cutters

Use these to cut gear wires and housing to length. They need to make a clean cut, without fraying, and have a section designed to crimp an end cap in place.

mountain bike travel tool kit

To split a modern chain you’ll need a pair of chain pliers.

Split link pliers

Most chains now fasten using a split link. This makes installation really easy, but you’ll need these special pliers to compress the chain and remove the link when it’s time for a new one.

Chain Whip (or pliers)

Use the chain whip to stop the sprockets rotating backwards on the freehub body when removing the cassette.

Peaty's Tubeless Valves

Peaty’s tubeless valves have a valve core removal tool incorporated into the dust cap.

Valve core remover

Use this to unscrew the valve core from Presta valves – means you can pour tubeless sealant through the valve and allow better airflow when seating the tyre.

mountain bike travel tool kit

Checking your chain wear regularly will save you money in the long run.

Chain wear indicator

Tells you when your chain has worn out and needs replacing. Sometimes the reverse has a pair of hooks that hold the split ends in place during joining.

I. expert repair tools.

Mountain bikes might involve some more expert or professional types of repair tools including facers, headset presses, or wheel truing stands.

For some people that are not very good on do it yourself tasks and not confident with these types of repairs, it might be best to leave these types of repairs in the hands of their local bike mechanic experienced and trained in these types of installations, repairs, and maintenance.

ii. Leave expert repairs to professionals

The average person, even if a trained mechanic, without the right training can damage the bike or his equipment, or really hurt himself.

Your bike might get damaged beyond repair, so it’s better not to leave these repairs to just anyone or try them by yourself if you are not really well experienced in performing them.

iii. Repairs and maintenance yourself

In case you are new to work on repairs and maintenance on your bike you can learn some skills by checking WikiHow or DIY bike yourself videos like those of Dave Delgado.

5 Must-Have Tools For Your Mountain Bike Repairs

Although modern bikes may appear more complex than those of the past, they are still reasonably easy to work on and require the same set of tools for most maintenance tasks. Apart from the essential pump, tire levers, and puncture repair kit, there are specific bike tools that every home mechanic should have in their toolkit.

1. Allen/ Hex Keys

A multi-tool can be helpful when you’re on the road and need to make repairs or adjustments. However, having a good set of Allen/hex keys in your toolbox is also important. A T-handle set with a ball end is a great starting point, as it allows you to access awkward bolts with less risk of rounding.

2. Torque Wrench

You can easily find affordable torque wrenches specifically designed for bikes and very compact. Using them, you can prevent the over-tightening of important components, such as the frame, fork, or handlebar, which can void your warranty or cause them to break. However, don’t forget to loosen the torque adjuster before storing it back in the toolbox.

3. Pedal Spanner

Get a proper pedal spanner for easy pedal removal. A regular spanner can be bulky and difficult to use. Invest in the right tool for the job to avoid frustration and save time.

4. Bottom Bracket Tool

If you want to change the part that connects the pedals to your bike, you’ll need a bottom bracket tool. But it can be hard to know which one to get because there are different kinds of bottom brackets and ways to install and remove them. So, it’s really important to make sure you have the right tool for your bike’s bottom bracket.

5. Chain Breaker Tool

Knowing how to use a chain breaker tool is crucial for maintaining your bike chain. It helps fix any issues with smooth movement and allows for easy removal for cleaning. The chain breaker tool increases the lifespan of your chain, making replacements less frequent and saving you money in the long run.

That’s a Wrap

If you own a top-of-the-line mountain bike and need to perform maintenance on it, you have two options. You can either spend a significant amount of money at your local bike shop or use the tools available to you.

However, it’s a smart decision to invest in a high-quality mountain bike tool kit. This will simplify the process of fixing or maintaining your bike and ensure that it stays in top condition for years to come.

Best Bike Tool Kits for Home Mechanics in 2024: Stay on Top of Your Bike Maintenance

It’s no secret that owning a bike will require some maintenance from time to time.

Whether it’s a quick puncture repair at the side of the road or a full bearing set replacement, you don’t need to be a professional mechanic to save yourself some money and do at-home repairs , but it can be helpful to have an idea of how to look after your bike.

Tools are key to any home mechanic’s success, and bikes require some common and some unusual tools to work on—particularly depending on the type of bike you ride. In this article, we’ll quickly discuss the types of tools you should look for in a good toolset, and dive into recommendations for some of our favorite tool sets.

Things to Know About Bike Tools

parktool advanced bike tools kit

Parktool’s bike tool kits are some of the most popular and best-rated ones that you can get.

If you’re new to the game of bike maintenance, then a bike tool kit might seem a bit excessive.

What are all those tools for? And realistically, am I going to use them all? The answer does vary, admittedly. The thing about bike maintenance and mechanical repairs is that a lot of it is learnable from home, you just need the correct tools.

If you’re thinking, ‘can’t I just use a normal household tool set?’ then you might get away with using the Hex keys and screwdrivers, but anything beyond that and you should really look into a specific bicycle tool kit.

Bike-specific tools aren’t just a gimmick to encourage you to part with your hard-earned cash. Instead, they’re useful for a variety of tasks – from bearing presses to chain tools, there are things that you’ll only find in a bicycle tools set.

Additionally, as we all know, bike technology keeps evolving. Remember when 11-speed groupsets were the big new thing? Well, now there’s 12, and even 13-speed available—and each requires different tools (for example, chain tools) to be worked on with. And let’s not even discuss the fact that every manufacturer likes to have different standards of things like bottom brackets or chainsets.

bicycle chain widths

Different styles and widths of bike chains show why you need to keep your chain tools up to date. | Image source: parktool.com

Things like bike chain tools and bottom bracket tools may need to be updated if you change bikes or groupsets and you want to repair or replace the chain or other drivetrain parts. So having an up to date set of bike tools will make working on your bike from home a breeze!

Essential Tools Every Bike Tool Kit Needs to Have

Now that you know why you should use bike specific tools, which ones do you need and why? These are the ones we think are a must-have for every home mechanic.

Allen/Hex Keys

allen/hex keys from silca

Silca’s premium selection of allen/hex keys.

Named a Hex key thanks to its hexagonal head, these are one of the most important bicycle tools you’ll find in your bike repair kit. Most bolts on a bike are Allen head bolts (or socket screws) such as those on your stem or seatpost.

Pedal Spanner

A pedal spanner allows you to attach or remove pedals to your bike. Although it should be noted that some pedals can be removed using a Hex Key, such as many gravel bike pedals , most road bike pedals require a pedal spanner for installation or removal.

Chain Whip and Cassette Tool

One of the more bizarre tools for bikes you’ll see, a chain whip is used to hold the cassette tight while you use the cassette tool to either remove or install the cassette. Look for chain whips with rubber handles for pain-free gripping.

Additionally, cassette tools can vary depending on the manufacturer of the cassette. For example, a Campagnolo cassette has a different fitment to a Shimano one so a different cassette tool is needed.

Chain Breaker Tool

park tool's compact chain breaker tool

Park Tool’s compact chain breaker tool.

Also known as a chain splitter or chain tool, a chain breaker tool has the important job of removing a link from your chain so you can uninstall the chain from your bike. Different tools are required depending on the type of groupset you have, the speed of the groupset and the manufacturer.

For example, a Shimano 10-speed chain requires a different tool than a Campagnolo 12-speed chain. This is due to the difference in chain-link designs (Shimano and SRAM use quick-links whereas Campagnolo does not), and the widths of the chain, which varies depending on the number of speeds.

Bottom Bracket Tool

A creaking or worn-out bottom bracket will happen to all of us eventually. The easiest way to remove that annoying noise is by removing the bottom bracket and either replacing it entirely or regreasing the bearings.

A bottom bracket tool is the best way to remove it, and it usually consists of a tool which fits over the bottom bracket cup so you can release it. If you have a press-fit bottom bracket then you will need a separate tool to install a new bottom bracket. Again, each bottom bracket is different so one tool does not unfortunately fit all.

Spoke Wrench

A spoke wrench helps you to adjust your spokes and thus align or ‘true’ your wheel. Just like most bike tools, they also come in different shapes and sizes depending on the spokes you have on your wheels. Be sure to check the tool is correct for your spokes before purchasing.

Torque Wrench

giustaforza bike torque wrench

Giustaforza’s premium bike-specific torque wrench.

Although not typically found in cheaper tool kits, a torque wrench is vital to the proper installation of components on your bike—particularly if the frame is carbon fiber as the bolts require specific Newton Meter (Nm) tolerances so that they do not crack the frame or cause damage.

Bonus: Bike Repair Stand

Of course, bike repair stands are not a part of bike tool kits, but it’s an invaluable piece of equipment for any home mechanic that frequently tinkers with their bikes.

Jobs such as indexing the gears, adjusting the brakes, truing the wheels, or cleaning the drivetrain become much easier if the bike is mounted securely on a bike stand and both of your hands are free.

The 7 Best Bike Multitools for On-the-Spot Fixes

Keep yourself and your bike in one piece with these tidy gadgets.

best bike multi tools

Gear-obsessed editors choose every product we review. We may earn commission if you buy from a link. How we test gear.

Once installed and adjusted, today’s bike components are likely to perform as intended for a long, long time. But as amazing as they are, they’re not impervious to the throes of everyday use, such as vibrations, corrosion, and the occasional neglect (no finger pointing here—we’ve all done it). Regardless of how on top of your maintenance schedule you are, mechanicals can catch you by surprise and ultimately leave you stranded on a ride—unless you have a reliable multitool handy to patch things up and get you rolling again.

The Best Bike Multitools

  • Best Overall: Crankbrothers F15 Multitool
  • Best for Minimalists: Park Tool MTC-20 Multitool
  • Most Versatile: Pedro’s Rx Micro-21 Multitool
  • Best Mini Ratchet Wrench: Blackburn Big Switch Ratchet Multitool
  • Best Mini Torque Wrench: Silca T-Ratchet and Ti-Torque Multitool

What to Consider

Which tools do you need for a bike.

Cyclists aren’t huge fans of carrying unnecessary cargo, which adds an incentive to carrying as small and efficient a multitool as possible. That said, super-minimalist tools contain only the bare essentials—most often a couple hex wrenches and a screwdriver or two. While they’re great for short rides and crafty mechanics, you may need to augment them with tools like tire levers and a chain tool to feel prepared for a big day.

If you’re looking for a more complete package, multitools with 15 to 21 attachments generally contain everything you need to fix a malfunction quickly and completely. They can be bulkier, sometimes fitting better in a frame bag or saddle bag , but they’ll help you ride worry-free without weighing you down considerably.

Knowing Your Bike

Cyclists who have worked on their own bikes likely already know which components require which tools, but if you’re not familiar, it may be worth checking your components before splurging on a fancy, all-inclusive kit. Do you need any Torx bits other than a T25? Do you need one at all?

Some multitools, while high-quality and reliable, may include tools that you’ll never use. For example, we love the Rx Micro-21 from Pedro’s, but if you don’t need a Shimano crank tool, you’re not gaining anything from that extra attachment other than grams. Most online listings for multitools will give you a list of every tool included, so it’s easy to double-check, but it’s worth mentioning that you can and should before you spend your hard-earned cabbage.

How We Selected

Our team has certainly experienced plenty of roadside and trailside mishaps, from loose cleat bolts to skipping gears to flat tires. We’ve used enough multitools to know what you need (and don’t need), and some give you those necessities far more concisely than others. That’s why we included multitools that offer everything from minimalist setups to toolkits that could fit in on a workbench. Every tool on our list features a reasonable selection of hex wrenches, screwdrivers and Torx bits, many have nifty extras like chain tools and tire levers, and they all have a low profile that will leave room in your pockets for your other goods.

Crankbrothers F15 Bike Tool

F15 Bike Tool

Though it’s not quite as loaded as other multitools on this list, the F15 stands out for its pragmatic array of tools, fine finish, and the magnetized case that helps lock pieces into place. It includes all the most common hex, Torx, and spoke wrenches, and it even has a chain tool and bottle opener built into the outer case for improved leverage (and beverage retention). All it’s missing to make the average ride disaster-proof is a tire lever or two, but those are easy enough to slip in your pocket alongside this super low-profile toolkit.

Park Tool MTC-20 Bicycle Multitool

MTC-20 Bicycle Multitool

This barebones tool is tiny and lightweight, and it has softer composite side plates that are ergonomically shaped for comfort as you wrench the thing around. If you’re looking to carry or replace a simple but long-lasting set of hex wrenches (including an 8-millimeter hex for your pedals), this could be a good choice. It also comes in an even more pared down size, the MTC-10 , but that version’s a lot harder to find in stock at the moment and leaves you with fewer tools.

Pedro’s Rx Micro-21 Multitool

Rx Micro-21 Multitool

It’s the little mini-tool that could: The Rx Micro-21 carries every possible tool you’d need for a road- or trailside repair—including a quick link chain repair link hidden away in the micro tire levers that attach to the sides of the multitool. There’s a chain tool, spoke wrenches, a Shimano crank cap tool, and even a presta valve core tool. Plus, Pedro’s includes a lifetime warranty against corrosion and breakage. Throw this in your back pocket, and you and your riding buddies will never sweat a roadside repair again.

Blackburn Big Switch Multi-Tool

Big Switch Multi-Tool

While beautifully simple, an L-shaped hex wrench is sometimes an odd fit for the nooks and crannies of your bike—especially when you go digging around in the rear triangle. The Big Switch offers a solution: The tool handle can hold bits like a screwdriver, or a T-handle wrench for a bit more leverage, or an L-handle wrench for a lot more leverage, all while ratcheting to keep you from laboriously reinserting your hex keys with every turn.

The Big Switch has more features than the older Switch tool—the number-one addition is a chain tool that packs in a valve core tool, spoke wrenches, and a disc-pad spreader (an especially uncommon tool that we’d love to see more often). And for neatness, it all fits in a small cloth case that folds flat and fits unobtrusively in a jersey pocket.

Silca T-Ratchet + Ti-Torque Multi-Tool

T-Ratchet + Ti-Torque Multi-Tool

Tightening bolts to the proper torque is crucial with high-end carbon fiber components—too loose and pieces will slip, too tight and you risk damaging the parts. You need a torque wrench to get this dialed in properly, although they’re often cumbersome tools, which is what makes this kit from Silca so remarkable.

Much like the Big Switch, The T-Ratchet fits neatly in a pouch that you can throw in a jersey pocket, but this toolkit includes Silca’s detachable Ti-Torque Beam that can measure torque from 2 to 8 Newton-meters—this will cover you for most stem, shift/brake lever, and seatpost bolts, all of which should have a torque spec detailed somewhere on the component itself. It’s not going to cover heftier torque measurements, such as what you might find on square-taper cranks, but we imagine you’ll have bigger fish to fry if one of those comes loose on a ride.

Crankbrothers M17 Multi-Tool

M17 Multi-Tool

If you dwell near rocky trails, you might yipe at the thought of dropping a nice multitool on the trail. Thankfully, the M17 is nearly indestructible thanks to its thick, all-metal construction, and you’ll struggle to warp even the slimmest hex keys on this tool from regular use. And as an added bonus, despite having a thin profile, this tool has extra grippy detailing on the outer handle to keep your wet, muddy mountain biker hands from slipping under heavy torque.

Wolf Tooth Components EnCase System Bar Multi-Tool Kit

EnCase System Bar Multi-Tool Kit

If you don’t have electronic shifting, chances are there’s a whole handlebar’s worth of storage space you could be using but aren’t—why not slip a multitool in there? This cleverly designed toolkit stows inside most flat handlebars (even typical drop bars, as long as they don’t have any unusual ergonomic bends in them). The tool has 1all your bases covered, including an 8mm allen wrench, and it also has thoughtful touches like a swivel head for reaching hidden bolts. It also comes with a tool for jamming plugs into your tires (and storage for several plugs), which gives this toolkit an extra degree of utility for tubeless enthusiasts.

Best bike tool kits 2024 | Top-rated choices for the home mechanic

Just the job for car park maintenance and garage tinkering

Alex Evans / Immediate Media

Stan Portus

A bike tool kit is a great choice if you’re just getting into cycling or you’re looking for a more comprehensive set of tools for the car or garage.

Many people build up their collection of bike tools over time, but a specialist tool kit is an easy and often more affordable way to get all the tools you need for virtually any bike maintenance, from changing a cassette to installing new brake cables .

Take a look at the best bike tool kits that we have tried and tested below, and our guide to some of the essential tools a kit should include.

Essential tools for a bike tool kit

Many modern bikes might seem more complicated than bikes of years gone by, but at their core, they are still relatively simple to work on and use the same selection of tools for most maintenance .

In addition to your basic pump , tyre levers and puncture repair kit , these are the essential bike-specific tools any home mechanic’s tool kit should include and will cover some of the most straightforward jobs on a bike.

Allen/hex keys

mountain bike travel tool kit

A multi-tool is great for on-the-road repairs and adjustments but try to have a good set of Allen/hex keys in your toolbox.

A decent T-handle set with a ball end on the long side is a good place to start – this allows you access to awkward bolts with reduced risk of rounding.

Torque wrench

Torque wrenches are available cheaply and you can get very compact bike-specific ones. The bonus to using them is that you avoid over-tightening anything, which can affect your warranty on – or simply break – parts you regularly tighten, such as the frame, fork or handlebar.

Just remember to undo the torque adjuster before throwing it back in the box.

Pedal spanner

A proper pedal spanner will give you a better chance of leveraging off pedals, especially if they haven’t been removed in a long time. A good pedal spanner is usually flatter and thinner than a regular spanner, which you may struggle to get between the pedal and crank arm to undo.

Always apply anti-seize compound to the pedal thread before installation to avoid wrestling with your pedals in the future. Check out our comprehensive guide on how to remove and change bike pedals for more info.

Chain breaker tool

mountain bike travel tool kit

A chain breaker tool is an essential bit of kit you should get familiar with using properly.

Use it to repair stiff links and to take your chain off for serious cleaning and so prolong the life of your chain and parts. You can even use it to take out a link and put a speed-link in to make removal/cleaning even easier.

Chain whip and cassette lockring tool

A chain whip holds the cassette in place and stops the freehub from spinning when removing the lockring of a cassette. It is also used to remove the cog from a fixed-wheel bike .

A good chain whip will have a decent length handle that will help you gain some mechanical leverage and make light work of removing a lockring.

Check that the chain whip is compatible with the width of the chain that you run on your bike. For instance, is it suitable for 11-speed chains?

You will also need a splined cassette lockring tool if you want to remove your cassette for replacement or cleaning. SRAM, Campagnolo and Shimano all use different standards for these.

Bottom bracket tool

A bottom bracket (BB) tool helps you remove or install a bottom bracket into the bottom bracket shell of a bike.

There is a wide variety of BB tools available due to the numerous bottom bracket standards out there and the different ways of installing and removing a bottom bracket, so making sure you have the right tool for the bottom bracket on your bike is a must.

Shimano Hollowtech II is arguably the gold standard with many brands opting to use it for external bearing and threaded bottom brackets. Shimano Hollwtech II tools also fit a wide variety of BBs from different brands and often work with adaptors for other standards.

Best bike tool kits in 2024

Pro advanced toolbox.

mountain bike travel tool kit

  • £200 / $290 / AU$453 as tested
  • Quality feeling tools
  • Needs to be topped up to be comprehensive

The PRO Advanced Toolbox has 25 tools that are well-made, a decent weight and feel like they’ll endure the test of time, as you’d expect of PRO (Shimano’s in-house parts brand).

Rubberised handles give great grip and enhance usability. The Allen keys have a precise fit and both the cassette tool and chain tool are 12-speed compatible. Quick-link pliers are a handy addition to the set.

The custom-cut foam inlay keeps the tools firmly in place, while the metal clasps on the carry case are robust and secure.

Ideally, it’d include a complete Torx set (it has T20, T25 and T30 wrenches) and a 1.5mm Allen key. If we’re being really picky, a flat-blade screwdriver would be nice too, but overall, there’s little to criticise with this excellent kit.

Birzman Essential Tool Box

  • £150 / $178 as tested
  • Professional-looking kit

The Birzman Essential Tool Kit is a professional-looking kit, with each of the tools stowed in a labelled foam pocket within the hard plastic case.

Thirteen ‘pieces’ are provided (20+ tools), covering most of what’s required to build a bike. The chain and pedal wrenches are long enough to unstick seized parts. Notches on the Allen keys are useful for checking they’re inserted far enough.

Adaptors are provided so you can use the cassette and bottom bracket tools with the 8mm Allen key, avoiding the need to add an adjustable spanner.

We’d downsize the chain rivet extractor and add a pair of cable cutters.

LifeLine X-Tools Bike Tool Kit 37-piece

mountain bike travel tool kit

  • £70 / €79 / $104 / AU$145 as tested
  • Wide selection of good quality tools
  • Some tools that won't get a lot of use

The tools in the LifeLine X-Tools all have a quality feel that exceeds this kit’s budget price.

We particularly like the Allen keys, which fitted nice and tightly in every bolt we tried. The cassette tool can be used with SRAM XD cassettes, and the chain whip and chain tool are 12-speed compatible too, with the latter working especially well.

The dedicated ¼in bit driver makes the kit ripe for expanding in the future, as your mechanic's skills grow.

The case feels fairly low-quality and the contents rattle in it when it's carried. This kit includes an internal BB tool and crank puller, which aren’t that useful for modern bikes. It’s a shame there isn’t a full set of Torx keys, only T25 and T30.

  • Read our review of the LifeLine X-Tools Bike Tool Kit 37-piece

Topeak Prepbox toolbox

  • £320 / €320 / $400 / AU$600 as tested
  • 36 usable, good quality tools

The Topeak Prepbox has 36 tools and is fairly comprehensive. The tools feel weighty and high-quality.

The long Allen keys are easy to use, and the inclusion of the 1.5mm size is a bonus. It’s great to see a torque wrench included too, and we found the chain tool particularly good for helping to free sticky links.

The case is sturdy, with foam cut-outs for each tool and zipped covers. During transit, there was no rattling and the tools remained in place.

While the cable cutters are sharp, they don’t have the smoothest action. The cassette tool’s chamfered edges mean it doesn’t engage that securely with SRAM XD 11- and 12-speed cassettes.

A couple of the tools – the internal BB tool and crank puller – are virtually redundant now and could be replaced.

Also consider

The following tool kits scored lower than the four out of five stars required to make our best list, but are still worth considering.

Halfords Bikehut 30pc Bike Tool Kit

  • £60 (international pricing N/A) as tested
  • Plenty of tools covering most jobs
  • Solid performer but could do with some improvements

The Halfords Bikehut 30pc Bike Tool Kit is a solid performer and should complement the budding mechanic with a host of bike-specific tools that serve well as a segue into more technical tasks.

The rubberised handles on the larger tools are comfortable to hold. The 8mm Allen key proved useful and doubles up as a ½in driver for other tools in the kit, but the driver can easily slip off. We found the quick-link pliers worked well and the tyre levers feel robust.

The Allen keys are short, so they only offer limited leverage for loosening tight bolts.

We found the combined pedal spanner/chain whip frustrating to use as a spanner because the chain contacts your hands, and the whip is a tight fit with 12-speed cassettes.

During transportation, the tools all remained in place, helped by the central foam separator, but they did rattle around. The plastic carry case is durable and locks closed with metal clasps.

  • Read our review of the Halfords Bikehut 30pc Bike Tool Kit

Halfords Essentials 25-piece cycling tool kit

  • £35 (international pricing N/A) as tested
  • Wide range of tools
  • Large size tools

The Halfords Essentials Tool Kit is an 18-piece kit that combines a large number of tools (Allen key sets, etc, are counted as single ‘pieces’) in a sensibly priced package.

There’s no T25 Torx wrench , though, which is widely used on modern mountain bikes.

The chain whip, 8mm Allen key and external bottom bracket tool have very long handles, which help when trying to loosen seized bolts. Angled jaws on the equally large pedal spanner reduce the risk of skinned knuckles.

Lower manufacturing tolerances mean the tools don’t have the same high-quality, durable feel as some of the others on test, and removing and replacing tools in the plastic box is fiddly.

Lezyne Port-A-Shop

  • £110 / $120 as tested
  • Allen and Torx wrenches
  • Glueless patches

The Port-A-Shop from Lezyne is more of a (well-presented) multi-tool expansion kit than the portable workshop its name suggests.

However, it provides a range of tools that should cover most car park bike-tinkering needs. The bulk of them are contained within three high-quality multi-tools.

There’s a wide range of Allen and Torx wrenches, and the inclusion of traditional and glueless patch kits is a nice touch. A separate spoke key would be easier to use than the one integrated into the chain tool.

The range of tools falls short of other kits here if you’re looking to fully assemble a bike.

Pedro’s Starter Tool Kit

  • £170 / $150 / AU$200 as tested
  • Tool wrap case
  • Some extra tools needed

Presented in a durable-feeling tool wrap, this selection of 19 high-quality tools is a good starting point for the home mechanic to expand upon.

Pedro’s ‘cog wrench’ is a hassle-free alternative to a chain whip, with a great handlebar-grip-style handle. The cable cutters are another highlight, slicing through both inners and outers easily.

You’ll need an adjustable spanner (not included, but there is room for one) to make use of some of the tools.

At this price, we’d expect common bike tools such as a T25 Torx wrench and bottom bracket tool to be included.

Best mountain bike toolkit: everything you need to keep your bike in tip-top shape

We take a look at the best mountain bike toolkits to keep your mountain bike running smoothly

best mountain bike toolkit

The best mountain bike toolkits make working on your bike easier and less stressful. A mountain bike has a sophisticated anatomy with lots of moving parts, so caution should be taken when tinkering. It's easy to cause damage by using the wrong equipment, so you need the right tools for the job.

While you could potentially buy your tools as you need them, this is often a far more costly way of doing things. By purchasing one of the best mountain bike toolkits, you'll be investing in something that will last you a lifetime, so you'll quite possibly never need to buy another tool again.

Read on for our pick of the best mountain bike toolkits on the market, or jump to the bottom for how to choose the best mountain bike toolkit .

Pedros Starter Tool kit 1.1

Pedros Starter Tool kit 1.1

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

This is a sparse kit but everyone needs to start somewhere. Pedros has its own iconic color, yellow in this case, and this is an entry to building a collection of yellow-handled tools. The burrito roll it comes with has room for expansion, so as you build you can add to it without needing to immediately upgrade.

In terms of the tools, it includes the essentials that every rider needs and there's nothing in the set that is likely to sit around not getting used. If you already have a collection of tools, the Pedros Starter Tool Kit is a good addition for keeping in your car on race day.

Park Tool AK5 Advanced Mechanic Tool Kit

Park Tool AK5 Advanced Mechanic Tool Kit

Park Tool is the brand that almost every bike shop keeps in its workshop. If bike mechanics - both professional and amateur - are happy using Park Tool products every day, then you can expect quality.

The Park Tool AK5 kit aims to bring professional quality into the home workshop. A clever addition is the included fourth edition of the Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair. In this digital world everything is available online, but having the book in your toolkit means no searching and no need to worry if the source is a good one.

Pro Advanced Toolbox

Pro Advanced Toolbox

It only makes sense if you've got a Shimano-equipped bike to look to Shimano's Pro brand for your tools. While it isn't exclusive to Shimano components, it does include some specifics such as tools for Shimano bottom bracket removal.

You've also got Torx tools included, which is a commonly overlooked need. The case included isn't designed for easy expansion, but the foam inserts do mean that nothing is going to rattle during transport. Everything has a place even if that means you end up with a second case for any extra tools.

Topeak Prepbox

Topeak Prepbox

Topeak may not be the first name that comes to mind when you start searching for tools, but it provides as many options as any other competing brand. In this case, the Prepbox is incredibly well thought out. Instead of just a few Torx wrenches and a combo tool, there's a full set. There's also a nice long socket driver and a torque wrench. The included torque wrench isn't the fanciest, but it does the job very, very well. Plus, if you do decide to expand your tool collection in future, Topeak has even considered that with more space in an external bag.

Abbey tools team issue toolbox

Abbey Tools Team Issue Toolbox

Abbey Tools makes a small collection of tools that are considered some of the best around. Among its wares are delicacies like a $120 pedal wrench that includes hex wrenches, as well as a traditional 15mm with a wooden handle. These aren't the tools for day-to-day use in a small shop, but rather the kinds of tools used by WorldTour mechanics who never let anyone else touch their tools.

With this kit, Abbey has combined a selection of its tools along with those from other companies that are equally obsessive and lust-worthy. The collection of tools then goes into a case with laser-cut foam where, once again, the level of obsession is off the charts.

Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit

Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit

Feedback Sports is a name you might notice if you watch behind-the-scenes professional bike racing coverage with an eagle eye. To go with its signature red work stands, it has put together a 19-tool Team Edition toolkit that hangs from a work stand to make the tools easy to access.

There's a collapsible fiberglass rod that tucks in at the top of the case so that while it's hanging it remains stable. The Team Edition is the larger of the two tool kits that Feedback Sports offers. There's also an add-on T-handle tool kit for additional Torx and hex wrenches. If you decide to pick it up there's room in the Team Edition case to keep everything together.

Unior pro home tool kit

Unior Pro Home Tool Kit

Depending on where in the world you are, Unior tools will be either blue or orange/red. In the US, Park Tool owns the trademark for blue cycling tools and Unior moved to a different color. Other than color everything remains the same - quality and tool complement included. Apart from the super-handy cassette wrench there are also a few other unusual but helpful tools in this kit. There's even a simple wheel truing tool and a brake caliper spreading device, making this one of the most comprehensive mountain bike toolkits for any mountain biker.

What to think about when buying a mountain bike toolkit

Don’t buy cheap tools

There's old wisdom that says buy cheap, buy twice.

While it might seem a good idea to cheap out on tools at the start, there's a lot more at stake than just replacing broken tools later down the line. Cheap tools can actually do a lot of damage, like rounding off bolts, making jobs much harder than they need to be.

If you're looking to buy a toolkit, buy one that will last for years to come.

Buy the tools you need

Think about the actual kinds of maintenance jobs you'll likely be doing before you invest in the tools, as there's no point in wasting money on a toolkit because it comes with specialty tools you'll never use. Instead, make sure you buy all the tools you need for the most common jobs you'll likely be doing.

Don't feel pressured by sales and savings opportunities to buy a bigger toolkit than you actually need or can afford, otherwise the unused tools will just take up precious storage space and collect dust. The tax on buying extra tools later isn't huge, so if things do change, you don't have to worry too much.

Get a work stand for your mountain bike

Even with the best tools, you need a way to work on your bike. Flipping your bike upside down on a towel isn't going to cut it. Instead, it's worth investing in one of the best bike work stands to hold your bike steady. A good work stand will also let you angle the bike for better access, depending on the job. Even small jobs like washing your bike and greasing the chain will be much easier with a good bike stand.

Seat bag with a dropper post? Let me know how that works....

Those are neat and all, but I switch between a number of bikes for different trails and seasons, so it would mean either buying multiple copies of these or remembering to move them bike to bike. I'll stick to keeping my tools in my pack, that way I just have to remember to grab that one bag for every ride. I can't seem to keep a full water bottle in a cage on the terrain around here anyway.

BB hollow crank location best for centered weight add and lowest possible location. so its should be used to full advantage for the big heavy stuff that can fit there. The axle idea is cool, but you have to take off the front wheel for minor adjustments and fixes. If it just was for added bit storage and possibly a long extender or large torgue requirements for bigger bits then this could be combined solution. Here’s something you’ll notice at a cyclist’s home.

They’ve their own set of bicycle tools.

When it comes to bicycle maintenance, you don’t always need to send your bike to the mechanic. Sometimes, you’ll be better off doing it yourself at home especially for the minor repairs. There are many videos on Youtube to guide you through if you’re new to these.

If you’re new, you might want to consider getting individual bike tools to perform basic tasks such as replacing the cassette/chain and adjusting the brakes or derailleurs.

But if you’re very handy with the wrenches and have good bike repair knowledge, then you might want to consider getting a complete toolkit.

  • Which toolkit should you get?
  • Or should you get individual tools based on your needs only?

On this page, I’ll explore this further and also share with you some of the popular ones available.

Well, actually, there’s one thing more frustrating. Having the right tool for the job but not being able to find it. They are worthless if you can’t find them.

That’s why you need to keep everything organized. That’s what the Topeak has in mind with its PrepStation Pro, which comes complete with a 40 piece toolset and a mobile workbench in which to store them.

This five-level wheeled tower features a series of labeled shelves that make your tools easy to find. 40 tools add up to a lot of weight. In order to support all that weight, the Topeak PrepStation Pro is made of heavy-duty plastic with large 5″ rubber wheels for easy transport.

  • Pros : Unique wheeled tower storage helps to keep them nicely organized.
  • Cons : Could be overkill for the beginner home mechanic.

Essential Tools to Have

There are times when you only need a selected few tools to perform the most basic maintenance jobs, and having a complete toolkit could be overkill.

So, here are the common ones that would be very useful to have at home.

Pedro's Tire Levers

Pedro Tire Levers

The Pedro’s tire levers will definitely help you to quickly remove tight and stubborn bike tires from the wheels without needing excessive force and effort.

They work in pairs, so don’t lose one of them or you’ll have a hard time removing the tires by the roadside. Remember to have one pair stored in your saddlebag as well.

Park Tool Chain Checker CC-3.2

Park Tool Chain Checker

This chain tool measures the chain’s stretch, and more importantly, it lets you know when it’s time for a new chain.

All chain manufacturers suggest it’s time for a new chain when the chain wear indicator falls between 0.50 or 0.75. Please don’t wait until it shows 1.0. That’ll be too late.

A worn-out chain will quickly wear out other bike components, such as the cassette and chainrings.

Pedro's L Hex Wrench Set

Pedro Bicycle L Hex Wrench Set

A set of top-quality L-shaped hex wrenches from a very reputable brand, Pedro which has all the sizes you’ll need for your bike.

There are 9 of them, ranging from 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 to 10mm in size. A plastic holder is included so you don’t lose them.

The L-shaped and ball-end design allow for greater leverage and easier access to hex sockets around tight spots.

Topeak Ratchet Rocket Lite NTX

Topeak Ratchet Tool

This is a set of multitools with a ratchet that allow you to loosen and tighten nuts at hard to access places.

It comes with 7 Allen key sizes, ranging from size 2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6 to 8mm, 2 Torx keys of T10, T25, and a Phillips screwdriver head.

A pair of tire levers are also included as an extra bonus.

Venzo Torque Wrench

Venzo Torque Wrench

A torque wrench prevents you from tightening nuts more than the manufacturers’ recommended torque values.

Nothing is worse than over-tightening nuts on carbon and then cracking it unintentionally.

It has a user-adjustable torque range between 2 to 24nm, which covers all you need for the bike from stem to bottom bracket bolts.

When it reaches the pre-set torque value, it has an audible click sound.

Oumers Cassette Removal Tool

Oumers Cassette Removal Tool

You can easily swap out the bike cassette at home and save a trip to your local bike shop with this tool.

They come in two pieces, a chain whip and a cassette lockring tool to remove the lock ring before you can remove the cassette.

They can be used on all types of cassette lockrings from Shimano, SRAM to Campagnolo.

Oumers Chain Breaker

Oumers Chain Breaker

This is a simple yet handy tool to have at home when you need to change your bike chain.

You can easily do it at home with the chain breaker instead of sending your bike to the shop and saving a few bucks for coffee instead.

If you ride a lot, you’ll probably require a new chain every 4 to 5 months, or maybe every 1 to 2 months if you ride as many miles as the pros do.

Park Tool Chain Scrubber CM-5.2

Park Tool Chain Cleaner

This is by far the most popular, effective, and hassle-free chain cleaner around.

All you’ll need to do is to run the chain backwards through the cleaner with the chain cleaner inside.

There are several mini brushes inside the cleaner that scrub the chain from all 4 directions and you’ll have a clean, shiny chain in less than 2 minutes.

Park Tool Pedal Wrench PW-4

Park Tool Pedal Wrench

Most adjustable wrenches are too thick to fit on the pedal axle to tighten and loosen them.

This pedal wrench has a slim profile, measures 11.5” (29cm) long, and provides plenty of leverage to remove the tightest of all pedals.

It’s useful if you travel a lot with your bike and the bike bag requires the pedals to be removed for packing.

Lezyne Steel Floor Pump

Lezyne Steel Bike Floor Pump

The Lezyne Steel Floor Pump is a solid bike pump that makes inflating the tires easier, especially when the tire pressure reaches 5 bar/72psi and beyond.

It can go all the way up to 220psi if needed for track bikes.

It’s compatible with both Presta and Schrader valves and has a very accurate tire pressure gauge reading.

Feedback Sports Sprint Repair Stand

Feedback Sports Bike Repair Stand

A bike work stand for you to easily and securely mount your bike while you’re working on it, whether it’s for washing or maintenance.

With this work stand, your bike sits on it rather than being clamped on the top tube or seat post which could potentially crack if you’re not careful, especially with carbon.

They fit all types of bikes from road bikes to CX, mountain bikes,s and even track bikes.

Tools Quality vs Quantity

1. quantity.

Everyone has different levels of expertise when it comes to bike repairs and maintenance. Your bike repair kit should reflect on your expertise levels.

There’s no point buying a whole bunch of tools that you aren’t going to utilize.

A good starting point is to find a toolkit that can perform most tasks on your bike. But there is nothing wrong with buying individual tools either.

If you realize you’re going to need quite a number of tools, there will be a point where it would be cheaper to buy a toolset rather than individual tools.

Geek Tip : Be realistic about what you can and cannot do on your bike.

We all know quality tools last a long time but they don’t come cheap.

On the flipside, cheaper ones tend to either round off quickly and could damage the bolts and nuts on your bike. If they feel fiddly at the beginning, chances are they’ll get worse after 4 to 5 times of using it.

Have a look at the tool and feel its build quality. Then ask yourself is tough enough to perform the job required overtime. The more often you need to use it, the better quality it needs to be.

Sometimes, you can get away with a cheaper and low-quality tool for a simple job.

Geek Tip : If you’re going to use the tools often, go for the highest quality ones that you can afford.

What to Look For in a Bike Tool Kit

No matter how good your bike is or how well you take care of it, something’s going to give at some point—a flat most likely, maybe worse. Fixing it may be as simple as making a seat adjustment on a long ride. But when something goes awry or needs a fix, the right tools will get you back on the saddle in time to enjoy the rest of your ride—or at least make it home safely.

Know Before You Go: Everything You Need to Know About Torque Wrenches • How to Change a Bike Tire • How to Use Tubeless Tire Sealant

Think of your bike tool kit like your bike helmet : essential equipment. It’s not a question of if you’ll bring tools, but what specific tools fit the bill. Depending on the distance and terrain of your ride, the age of your bike and components, and your proximity to help will all factor into determining what tools you should keep handy. From regular maintenance, like fixing a flat or adjusting your chain, to making upgrades and geeking out on the finer mechanical details of your ride, having the right tools at the right time makes all the difference. But not just any tool or set will suit you the same every time. Riding fast and light isn’t an excuse to leave your tools behind, but what you pick to bring on a light ride will probably look different from what’s necessary on a longer or more remote excursion. Consider all the “what if’s” about what you’re riding, where you’ll be, who you’ll have around, and which equipment you’ll need to fix things up if and when things go wrong and use those factors as a guide in choosing a bike tool kit.

Size and Weight

If you've already got a bag full of books, clothes, notebooks and a laptop, you’ll want something small and efficient, micro even. The same holds true if you’re going for time or racing—you want to carry as little weight as possible. Longer and slower rides, especially ones that take you far beyond the range of easy assistance, warrant carrying a heftier kit to cover all your bases. Think about your goals for the ride and balance those with what’s at stake should disaster strike. Can you get by with the bare essentials for the sake of performance and comfort, or do you need extra security ensure you can get your bike working again, at the expense of extra bulk?

End Use/Purpose

It might sound obvious, but the tools you bring on a ride should be different than the ones you keep in your garage. Repairs on the road and trail are meant to be quick fixes to get you back out there and home safely, while the tools you buy to keep at home allow you to fine-tune your bike. It’s good to have a both options at your disposal, so you aren't stuck lugging pieces of your garage kit with you on a ride or trying to make serious repairs at home with a dinky multitool.

Compatibility

Depending on where your bike and its components were made, you’ll need to select specific tools to match their measurement systems. Make sure your tools use the same units as the equipment you’ll be using them on. Tubeless and tubed setups obviously also call for different repair sets; you don’t want to be the person who brings a patch kit on the day you make the switch to tubeless tires. Furthermore, some brands produce full lines of compatible tools; others still work with tools and parts from other brands. Do an audit of the tools you already have that you want to keep before expanding your collection to ensure new additions will fit in well.

How We Selected The Best Bike Tool Kits

Image no longer available

Building on the groundwork laid by co-writer Aaron Bible , who wrote a previous version of this guide, I selected these products based on my own experiences with dozens of tool kits throughout my cycling career.

I’ve been riding bikes for 30 years and have made every type of roadside repair, from basic flat tires to some legitimately complex repairs. After taking them on short rides near my home and longer, more adventurous multi-day trips, these kits stood out for their functionality, durability, and how they felt in my hand. These are the best bike tool kits, and you can rely on them.

Fix It Sticks Compact Ratcheting Multi-Tool

Compact Ratcheting Multi-Tool

The Fix It Sticks Ratcheting Multi-Tool combines the feel and function of a shop-level tool in a compact and portable design. The reversible, ratcheting two-piece T-handle wrench features magnetic holders on all three ends, accepting any standard 1/4-inch bits. The kit includes 15 bits, including Phillips, Torx and hex screwdrivers, along with a mini pry bar. If you need extra or different parts, Fix It Sticks also sells individual bits, torque limiters , and even a bottle opener , which you can buy separately and add in.

The spring-loaded magnetic locking collar holds the bits securely in place so they won’t fall into the dirt on the side of the road or trail. This is a well made, robust tool that has its place on the bike as well as in the shop.

Park Tool I-Beam

I-Beam

Sometimes the simplest choice is the best. If you're on a budget or simply looking for the most basic option, the Park Tool I-Beam is a no-frills, durable, and compact multitool. Covered by a lifetime warranty, this tool could literally last you forever. With only a small selection of Allen wrenches, a flathead screwdriver, and T25 Torx head, you get the essential tools that you will need to make repairs, and nothing more.

Wolf Tooth Components 8-Bit Pack Pliers

8-Bit Pack Pliers

At only 70 grams (roughly 0.15 pounds), this compact tool from Wolf Tooth Components boasts 17 functions, all deftly designed to slip easily into a jersey pocket or saddle bag. It goes beyond the basics and includes tools for installing and removing master links, clearing tire sealant clogs from valve stems, and tightening valve stem locknuts.

While it isn’t the most robust tool, it offers plenty of grip and durability. The one thing that can be fiddly are the small bits, which are magnetically held in place within the handle of the pliers. Otherwise, this smart design offers a highly versatile array of tools in a svelte package.

Fix It Sticks Mountain Kit

Mountain Kit

Made specifically for mountain bikers, this tool kit is small, light, and yet features everything you need on the trail, with room to spare for other essentials.

The innovative design means you get a T-handle grip for better ergonomics while using the various bits, as well as tire levers and a full-size chain breaker. It’s all neatly organized in a small carrying case that intentionally offers room for additional bits, sold separately.

Dynaplug Racer

Racer

If you run tubeless tires, you'll need an extra tool specifically for plugging punctures. The DynaPlug Racer is a go-to choice for amateurs and professional gravel cyclists alike due to its compact design and ease of use.

The double-sided barrel is as small as a mini pencil, and holds two pre-loaded plugs. All you have to do is find the hole and stick it in. At 4 ounces, you pay a very small weight penalty for a potential quick roadside repair.

Park Tool Tire Patch Kit

Tire Patch Kit

For a quick fix-it-and-quit-it tire repair on tubed tires, add the Park Tool Tire Patch Kit to your bag. Six pre-cut patches fit different size holes and tears for a fix that will last much longer than just your ride home.

Consider this the ultimate tube-saver: Done right, these patches will keep your tube going for just as long as if it had never hit a snag in the first place. The small round patches fit small punctures perfectly, and the oval patches handle longer or wider rips. Tapered edges ensure the patch sits right in line with the tube rubber, without loose ends or edges susceptible to peeling off. There’s even a square of sandpaper to help rough out the surface of the tube for better glue adherence.

This patch kit is simple and straightforward: Just what you need when you get that sinking feeling (literally).

Feedback Sports Reflex Fixed Torque Ratchet Kit

Reflex Fixed Torque Ratchet Kit

The Reflex gives you a modular multitool and a torque wrench in a compact, single-tool kit. The ratcheting handle works with a 25mm extension socket and a 5Nm click-torque extension socket (the most frequently used torque specification seen on bikes). Or, use the tool without either in a “screwdriver” configuration for tight spaces.

The kit includes 10 of the most commonly used bits, which are securely organized in a plastic sleeve. It’s not everyday that you will need to tighten bolts to exact torque specs while on the road or trail, but it sure is nice to have the ability to do so for peace of mind. With the included padded case, this is a well-organized and compact package.

Feedback Sports Team Edition Tool Kit

Team Edition Tool Kit

This mega kit gives you everything you need to tinker with your bike at home, or for bigger repairs to keep you going on multi-day tours. It’s a handy complement to many of the smaller tagalong kits I've recommended, which are made for quick fixes to let you to ride home in one piece. Once you're back at home or at a safe resting place, this kit allows to make more long-term repairs and adjustments using a wider variety of burlier tools.

Designed with input from professional cycling team mechanics, this 20-piece kit gives you everything you need to perform regular maintenance and make emergency repairs in the field. It comes in a TPU-coated case to keep the contents safe from wear, tear, and the elements.

While it's larger than most of my picks, it's portable enough to take on bike trips away from home, but I wouldn't carry it along unless you're bikepacking.

Expert Chris Case Shares What’s In His Tool Bag Plus What Extras You Might Want to Add!

best bike toolkits

BI: What's in your bike tool kit?

CC: What I bring on any given ride varies based on how far and how remote I’ll be, as well as the type of bike I’m riding (road bike, gravel bike, or mountain bike).

For everyday road rides near home, I bring a simple multitool (something like the Pro Bike Gear Performance 13), some tire levers, and nothing more. For gravel I’ll add my DynaPlug tubeless repair kit. For bikepacking trips or mountain bike rides in rough, remote terrain, I’ll bring quite a bit more, something like the Fix It Sticks Mountain Kit, with a chain breaker.

BI: Are there any repairs that you shouldn't attempt on the road?

CC: That depends on your experience and expertise, as well as how well you’re able to improvise. Technically you can make almost any repair on the side of the road. Even broken spokes might be repaired with a few simple items and some ingenuity. (Hopefully it never comes to that.)

Realistically the most common repairs you’ll encounter will be fixing flat tires, adjusting derailleurs , shifting your saddle—simple stuff. If you don't know how to make these repairs, I'd take a little time to learn the basics before going on a long ride. Beyond that, you're better off making complex repairs in your home garage or bringing your bike to a mechanic so you know the job is done right.

BI: When it’s time to upgrade, what are the first extras to add to a bike tool kit?

CC: Out on the road, it isn’t often that you have to do sophisticated repairs involving torque wrenches and other advanced tools. However, with the advent of compact torque wrenches, it is a welcome addition to know that even in the field you can be tightening bolts to the exact manufacturer’s specifications. That’s why the Feedback Sports Reflex kit is a great option—compact, useful, and well designed.

At home, a decent set of keys with T-handles and long extensions are a superb upgrade for anyone who works on their own bikes.

The 6 Best Bike Tool Kits & Tools to Repair Your Bike With

Profile picture of Petr Minarik - the founder of cyclistshub.com

CyclistsHub is supported by its readers. We may receive a commission if you buy products using our links.

This is a selection of the best bike tool kits and other essential tools you need to maintain your bike. I selected them based on user reviews and the experiences of my friends who use some of these tools.

In this article, you will also learn what other tools are essential for regularly maintaining your bike.

BEST OVERALL

The best bike tool kit is the Park Tool Starter Kit (also available at jensonusa.com ). It contains the most important tools like a hex wrench set to adjust bolts, a chain checker to find out when to replace a chain, and many more in a practical box. It also comes with a handy book full of tips on bike maintenance.

What Are The Best Bike Tool Kits?

Best Tool to Have

Best Bike Tool to Carry

mountain bike travel tool kit

The following bike tool kits are the “all-in-one” solution because they include multiple tools. You can use them to repair most defects on your bike.

If you only want a specific tool (like a floor pump, tire levers, etc.), click here to browse the essential tools .

1. Crankbrothers Multi-Tool in Case (Best Bike Multi-Tool)

  • Better quality compared to the WOTOW repair tool kit
  • Very portable (good for bike trips)
  • Case included
  • Available in multiple colors
  • Difficult to use (low to any leverage)
  • It may rust when left in a wet environment

This tool kit by Crankbrothers is the same as the WOTOW Bike Tool Kit . However, this one is much better quality, and you can rely on it any time.

It comes in 5 different colors and with a storage case. The kit includes 19 different tools (hex wrenches, a spoke wrench, chain tool, open wrench, screwdrivers, Torx screwdrivers) in a small form factor. You can use them to fix the most defects on your bike.

Crankborthers tool kit is portable, so you can store it inside your jersey pocket, into a handlebar bag, saddle bag, or any other bag you must carry.

The main disadvantage is that it may rust if you leave it in a wet environment. If it gets wet, make sure to dry it.

2. WOTOW Repair Tool Kit (Best Budget)

mountain bike travel tool kit

  • Good price/value ratio
  • Comes with a saddle bag
  • Portable (good for bike trips)
  • Lightweight
  • Questionable quality

If you have a limited budget, this tool is the best bike tool kit for the money. It is super portable, so you can put it inside your saddlebag and use it when needed.

The variety of tools it offers is wide. It contains hex keys (2, 2.5, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 mm), a slotted screwdriver, a solid wrench (8, 9, 10 mm), 3 pcs of tire levers, and an extra 3 mm hex key, and more.

You can use these tools to tighten bolts & nuts, replace tires, adjust shifting, and much more. From my experience, this tool kit can save you on a bike trip.

The only issue with this tool is its questionable quality. It will do its job, but it is not suitable for regular maintenance.

If you can afford to spend more, check out the Crankbrothers Multi-Tool , which is much better quality.

3. Park Tool Advanced Tool Kit (Best for Pros)

Park Tool Advanced Kit with all its contents folded in front of the box (view from the front)

  • A large variety of high-quality tools
  • A book on how to maintain and repair your bike included
  • Durable toolbox with tray insert included
  • More expensive than other tool kits in this selection

Park Tool is a renowned manufacturer of bicycle maintenance tools. Their Advanced tool kit is probably exactly what you imagine when talking about pro tool kits. It contains 36 most used bike tools, so you will be able to fix almost everything on your bike.

The possible use cases include adjusting the saddle, seat post, stem, and handlebars, removing and installing pedals, replacing tires and tubes, diagnosing, cleaning, and replacing a chain, and much more.

This tool kit is perfect for cyclists who want to take care of their bikes at home.

The bonus is that the box comes with a book explaining the procedures and techniques to maintain your bike.

You will get the tools and step-by-step instructions on how to fix the defects on your bike. If you are a maintenance newbie, I am sure you appreciate it.

The biggest disadvantage of this bike tool kit is its price. If it is too expensive for you, check out the Park Tool Starter Kit , which doesn’t include as many tools but is much cheaper.

4. XCH Robots Repair Bag

XCH Robots repair bag with all its contents folded in front of the box (view from the front)

  • Excellent price/value ratio
  • A large variety of tools
  • Worse quality compared to the Park Tool kit

The XCH Robots repair bag tool kit comes in a durable box where you can spare all 37 tools this kit includes.

This kit also contains tools for replacing the bottom bracket, so if you are experienced enough, you can also take advantage of this tool.

Additionally, this kit contains sets of wrenches, a chain checker, chain cleaner, Torx wrenches, and other most used tools.

The main downside of this kit is its quality. The flat wrenches may bend if the bolts and nuts are too rusty.

If you want a set that contains many of the most used tools and have a tight budget, go for it. Otherwise, I recommend paying more for the Park Tool Advanced kit .

5. Bikehand Tool Kit

mountain bike travel tool kit

  • Pump and tube repair kit included
  • Can be attached to a bike thanks to Velcro straps
  • Worse quality compared to the other tool kits

The Bikehand tool kit is ideal for bike trips. You can attach it to your bike frame using Velcro straps.

The set includes a complete kit for replacing tires:

  • A mini bike pump that can inflate up to 120 PSI.
  • Tire levers for easier dismounting and mounting tires.
  • Glueless patches to fix the puncture.

The Bikehand tool kit is suitable for beginners. It is not a professional set for routine bike maintenance. The quality of the materials is low, so the tools may break if you apply too much force.

6. Park Tool Starter Kit (Best Starter Bike Tool Kit)

  • A good variety of high-quality tools
  • Durable box included

This Park Tool Starter Kit is a little brother of the Park Tool Advanced Kit . It contains fewer tools like a hex wrench set, chain checker, chain tool, cable cutter, screwdriver, etc.

It is the best bike tool kit overall because it combines excellent quality and the most useful tools for bike maintenance. You will be able to repair the vast majority of bike defects.

It also includes the bike maintenance book as the Park Tool Advanced Kit. I am sure beginners would appreciate it.

The only shortcoming of this kit is the price, which may be too high for people looking for a cheap tool kit.

The 10 Most Important Bike Tools You Should Have

Below, you can find a selection of the most important tools for maintaining and repairing your bike.

Slime Tube Patch kit packing

1. Slime Tube Patch Kit

Yes, I can hear you. A patch kit is not a tool! Well, you are right. But what are you going to do when you get a puncture?

Having a patch kit with you on a bike trip is a lifesaver. With the kit, you can patch the hole in your tube, pump it with a mini pump , and continue riding.

This patch kit contains glue, a metal scuffer, and 5 rubber patches for different sizes of holes.

Two yellow Pedro tire levers (view from the top)

2. Pedro’s Bicycle Tire Lever

If you get a puncture, you will need tire levers to remove the tire.

I can take the tire off without any tools from some rims. But it takes a lot of effort.

Pedro’s tire levers will make your work much easier and save you a lot of time (and nerves). Trust me.

Yellow BV Bike Floor Pump (view from the front)

3. BV Bike Floor Pump

A bike floor pump is a must-have if you have a bike. It allows you to inflate the tires of your bike, and eventually, other inflatable things like pools, swim rings, river tubes, etc (the needle is included).

The BV Bike floor pump features a pressure indicator and can pump pressures of up to 160 PSI. This is enough for all bike types.

This pump is compatible with ‘Schrader,’ ‘Presta,’ and ‘Dunlop’ valves. This means you can use it for inflating any bike.

TIP: Browse the best bike floor pumps for MTB, road, and hybrid bikes to see more examples of high-quality floor pumps.

4. Park Tool 3-Way Hex Wrench

Phillips screwdrivers, commonly known as hex screws, are the most useful for maintaining your bike.

The most common sizes on bike screws are 4, 5, and 6 mm. And guess what? This Park Toll 3-Way offers exactly that.

So, if you need to tighten/loosen any screws, for example, for adjusting your handlebar, saddle, seat height, etc., this tool is everything you need.

Pro Bike Tool Torque Wrench Set box with its contents in front (view from the front side)

5. Pro Bike Tool Torque Wrench Set

Torque wrenches are very useful for the precise tightening of bike parts. Especially if you have carbon bike parts, you will need a torque wrench because if you tighten them too hard, you may break them.

With this Park Tool torque wrench, you can tighten screws from 2 to 20 newton meters (nm).

This set also includes Hex and Torx sockets and also an extension bar for better accessibility.

Park Tool Cone Wrench set (14 wrenches folded next to each other)

6. Park Tool Cone Wrench Set

Having a wrench set is important, especially if you need to service your brakes or hubs.

You can also install/remove pedals with it, but you won’t get as big leverage as with a dedicated pedal wrench.

This Park Tool Cone set consists of 14 different wrenches, so you won’t be surprised by any size.

Oumers cassette removal tool with a cassete adapter and other package contents

7. Oumers Cassette Removal Tool

You should replace your cassette once it wears off. But it can be a pain without the right tools.

With the Oumers cassette removal tool, it is going to be super easy. You can use it for all cassette types (e.g. Shimano, SRAM, Campagnolo).

This set contains the cassette lock ring that you need when removing the cassette, the chain whip, and the auxiliary wrench.

Park Tool Chain Checker

8. Park Tool Chain Checker

A bike chain life cycle varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. A quality bike chain should last around 3000 miles (around 4800 km).

To check the condition of your chain, use this simple tool. It is called a chain checker, and it will show you how much your chain extended.

If the chain is worn for about 0.5% (11 & 12 speed systems) or 0.75% (5 to 10 speed systems), you should replace it. Otherwise, you risk damaging the cassette and chainrings.

Oumers chain breaker with and illustration of how to break a chain

9. Oumers Chain Breaker

Once you find out with the chain checker tool that it is time to replace your bike chain, you will need a chain breaker (or pliers).

It helps you split the chain so you can replace it with a new one. It is easy to do it at home, so you don’t have to go to a bike shop and spend money there.

The chain breaker is universal, so you can use it for any bike chain, including 7- to 11-speed chains from Shimano, Campagnolo, SRAM, and other manufacturers.

Park Tool Chain Cleaner Set (the cleaner, detergent, and brush)

10. Park Tool Chain Cleaner Set

To increase the lifespan of your bike chain, you should clean (and lube) it properly. It can be a hassle when you don’t have the right tools.

I didn’t want to buy the chain cleaner for a long time. I thought it was not worth it. How wrong I was!

This Park Tool chain cleaner set will save you a lot of time when cleaning the chain. And don’t stop there – clean your cassette too. The cassette clean brush is included.

The best bike tool kit overall is the Park Tool Starter Kit ( also available at jensonusa.com ). Yes, it is slightly more expensive than the other kits in this selection, but it includes high-quality tools for most defects.

It comes with a durable box where you can spare all tools. It also includes a compartment for better organization.

This tool kit includes tools like hex wrenches, a chain checker, a chain breaker, a screwdriver, and many more.

If you don’t want to buy a whole kit, you can choose from the selection of essential bike tools .

What Are the Most Important Bike Tools?

Do you know the Pareto principle ? It is also called the 80/20 rule. It says that 80% of the consequences come from 20% of the causes . You may ask, why do I even talk about this? Let me explain.

The Pareto principle does not apply to business, management, investing, and similar fields only. It also applies to everyday activities, including bicycle maintenance.

This means you only need just a few tools to fix most of the defects you have with your bike.

Engineering flowchart: what tools do you need to fix things

Do you find the engineering flowchart as funny as I do? It is so true. However, you will need more than two tools for your bicycle maintenance.

You will fix the most common defects on your bike with the tools below.

If you are a beginner lacking bike maintenance experience, feel free to watch the following bicycle maintenance routine. It will help you to properly take care of your bike.

Go for the Quality, Not the Quantity

If there is a saying that quality is better than quantity, it is with tools. There are several reasons for this. Cheap tools wear out more easily. They will only last you a few years, and if you use them daily, maybe even less.

Cheap tools can also damage bolts and nuts. And you want to avoid that. Especially if you own a more expensive bike. I highly recommend paying more for high-quality tools. It is worth it because these tools will last.

I’m not rich enough to buy cheap things. – Old English saying

Calvin Jones from Park Tool showing Park Tool tools.

Should You Buy a Bike Tool Kit or Individual Tools?

Before you buy a bike tool kit, you should think about its pros and cons. I summarized them in the following table.

So, what is the conclusion here? If you are a beginner and need to tighten a few screws only, I recommend picking the individual tools. It will be cheaper than buying a whole bike tool kit that contains tools you will never use.

But, as you get more experienced and serious about cycling, you may also start using the ‘more advanced tools.’ At this point, go for a bike tool kit that does not contain too many tools you have at home already.

Best Bike Tool Kits FAQ

There are a few essential tools you should carry with you on your bike for every bike trip. These include: • tube repair kit • set of Allen keys • tire levers and a mini bike pump or a CO2 inflator If you get a puncture, a very common defect, you will fix it with these 3 things. Otherwise, you may call home for a taxi… Make sure you read the whole article about bike tool kits and tools to determine which tools are worth it.

Yes, I have personal experience with a few Park Tools tools like hex keys, a chain cleaner, or a torque wrench. When you hold them in your hand, you can ‘feel’ their quality and durability. I can always rely on them.

I don’t recommend buying cheap tools unless you have a very tight budget. Cheap tools often break, are unreliable, and, even worse, may damage the bolts, nuts, screws, etc. Invest more in high-quality tools. The investment will pay off because high-quality tools will last you forever.

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

I like my mountain plus bike. The only problem i have, the third speed jump when i put some pressure . Its not an adjustement, everything is fine. The problem is with the freewheel .I did 70 kilometer with the bike and it attenuate the problem a little.

When and where you’ll be cycling are key factors that should guide your packing list for a bike trip . “There isn’t much difference between a short trip and a long trip,” says adventure YouTuber Ryan Van Duzer. “The weather is what makes the difference on what clothing to pack, whether it be base layers for warmth or waterproof protection,” adds Van Duzer.

Besides the riding conditions, it’s also important to consider comfort, performance, and durability in your cycling apparel. “Look for clothing and apparel with merino wool to prevent odor, especially on longer trips and if you’ll be repeating outfits,” advises Van Duzer. Other items, like padded bike shorts and cycling shoes, should balance lasting comfort with performance to enhance your pedaling power, efficiency, and stamina. Choosing high-quality, durable apparel will help ensure you get plenty of miles out of your purchases.

If you’re planning on longer rides and multiple days in the saddle, padded bike shorts are essential to stay comfortable. The Giordana FR-C Pros excel when it comes to comfort and performance. The shorts’ Cirro OmniForm chamois is designed with multiple layers that form to the shape of the rider while providing ventilation and relief channels in sensitive areas. The chamois also incorporates aloe vera into the fabric to soothe skin and prevent odor. While the FR-C Pro’s tight fit takes some getting used to, the elastic leg bands and waist panel manage to achieve security without being overly compressive. After regularly wearing these for months, we love that the high-quality, anti-abrasion fabric offers soft supportive compression that make you want to ride all day.

The Pearl iZUMI women’s expedition shorts impressed us for their high-quality construction and long-lasting comfort. The brand’s Elite Transfer fabric provides a flexible, yet supportive fit and wicks away moisture. We love the padding’s barely-there feeling and ability to stay in place during long rides. The wide waistband design prevents chafing and an overly restrictive fit so you can mix up riding positions and pedal comfortably for hours. Pearl iZUMI incorporated three pockets in the expedition shorts — two cargo pockets and a center-back pocket — allowing easier access to snacks or an extra layer. With a competitive retail price, these shorts are a great value, too. For an even more aerodynamic fit, consider the bibbed version of these shorts .

The Showers Pass Apex Merino Tech T-shirt is designed with cyclists in mind. Made with an 87 percent merino wool and 13 percent nylon blend, the shirt is breathable and odor-resistant. “I like wearing natural fibers like merino wools — they don’t stink compared to polyester materials,” notes Van Duzer, who has ridden across the continental United States and other countries around the world. The Apex Merino Tech shirt features a relaxed fit and lengthier back in both the men’s and women’s versions for optimal coverage, especially when hunched forward in an aggressive riding position. It also boasts UPF 40 sun protection and a reflective label to enhance visibility on the road.

This fit comes courtesy of the BOA Li2 closure system, which consists of two dials that carry out two-way adjustments to the finest degree. While you’re pedaling away, the shoe’s Microtex upper facilitates airflow to regulate moisture and temperature. Whether you choose to ride in cycling cleats or other active footwear, the Shimano EH500 PSD bike pedals have you covered. One side of the hybrid pedal is compatible with SPD clips, while the other is equipped with eight traction pins for reliable grip, rain or shine. SPD, which stands for Shimano Pedaling Dynamics, is the brand’s clipless pedal that delivers a secure foot-to-pedal connection and easy multi-release system. While some pedals only release by kicking your heel out horizontally, the EH500 SPD pedal will unclip if you move your heel in multiple directions — a safety perk for newer cyclists .

If you’re on a multi-day cycling tour, having the option to swap out your cycling shoes for regular footwear is incredibly convenient when taking shorter sightseeing rides or running errands. And then when it’s time to complete another leg of your journey, you can switch back to riding clipped-in.

Best Men’s-specific Bike Seat: Ergon Men's SMC Core Bike Saddle

The Ergon SMC Core Saddle features a multi-layered system of padding to deliver an ideal balance of cushion, support, and responsiveness. The saddle uses Ergon’s Core 3D and TwinShell technology to form a multi-layered design, which encompasses a BASF Infinergy elastomer foam layer sandwiched between two nylon composite shells. This allows the SMC Core to move side to side to support pelvic movement while pedaling, reducing back strain and pressure on the sit bones. We were impressed by the seat’s stability on tough terrain and tactical trails. It’s also equipped with a pressure relief channel, which expands as it moves toward the back of the seat, helping to prevent numbness in sensitive areas on longer rides.

The cutout, combined with the titanium rails and nylon base, keeps the weight to just around .6 pounds (depending on size).

The mummy-shape sleeping bag is insulated with a 900+ down fill to keep campers comfortable at below-freezing temperatures, and it's treated with a water-repellent coating to shed moisture. Meanwhile, the rubber-coated handle folds over the lid for packability and locks in place while cooking. With an average boil time of 2 minutes, 30 seconds, the Stash Stove makes morning coffee and meals a breeze. The wide-mouth cook pot design also makes it easy to eat from, meaning you can skip plates and bowls for less weight or other on-the-road essentials. What to Know Before You Pack for a Bike Trip

Take only the essentials.

Packing light while bringing everything you need takes planning and practice. “I only pack two [cycling] shirts and one pair of bike shorts,” says Van Duzer. Since they’re made with quick-drying materials, washing shirts and bike shorts in your shower or bathroom sink is a quick and easy way to get back-to-back wears out of the same outfit, he adds. By keeping your cycling apparel to a minimum, you’ll ensure you have plenty of room for essential gear, accessories, and clothing and footwear for when you’re not riding on two wheels.

Choosing to borrow or rent items upon arrival can help cut down on your packing list. Van Duzer brings all his own gear (including his bike) and clothing, only buying food once he arrives at his next cycling destination. “Most airlines will take your bike as checked luggage and won’t charge extra as long as it fits their parameters,” says Van Duzer.

Prepare for all weather

Even in the most temperate environments, there’re bound to be variations in temperature and precipitation, especially if you're heading out first thing to ride into the afternoon. Unless traveling in the warmest climates, packing a jacket to protect against rain and wind is recommended. Choosing waterproof gear and storage is another good idea for covering your bases if the weather takes a turn for the worst.

Choose versatility

Prioritizing versatility in your cycling gear, apparel, and accessories can prepare you for a variety of conditions and help keep your packing list on the lighter side. Selecting lightweight, packable layers that can be easily taken on and off and worn in variable temperatures is key, as they’ll be practical for multiple seasons and different cycling destinations. It may take some time to mix and match to find what combinations work best for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I take my bike with me on a trip or rent?

If traveling by car, transporting your own two wheels on a bike rack is an easy solution. If you’re riding for several days or more, the cost of flying with your bike may be cheaper than renting — not to mention the benefits of being certain that you’ll have a bike that fits and handles well.

Where do I keep all of my things on a bike trip?

Bikes have versatile storage options, including rear and front racks, baskets, and bags that attach to the frame, handlebars, or installed racks.

Can I use my bike trip equipment on rides at home?

Yes — using your bike trip equipment and gear at home can help prepare you for your trip as well as enhance your day-to-day cycling experience.

What materials should I look for when preparing for a bike trip?

For apparel, look for natural fibers like merino wool for optimal breathability and odor resistance. For bike gear, look for durable and waterproof materials like ripstop nylon.
