Although the island is relatively small, there is lots to see and do and renting a car gives you the flexibility to travel and explore at your own pace. Overall, we found driving in Rhodes to be very safe and easy. We encountered good, albeit narrow, roads and a mostly high standard of driving.

Why Rent a Car in Rhodes?

Rhodes is one of the most beautiful Greek islands and is home to incredible sights such as the Lindos Acropolis, the Tharri Monastery and Ancient Kameros. It is also extremely easy to navigate by car.

Renting a car in Rhodes is one of the best ways to experience everything the island has to offer. We spent days exploring the best beaches in Rhodes , sampled food from across the island, wandered through its historic sights and visited its painted churches.

We loved having the flexibility to explore the Island at our own pace, visit off the beaten track sights and generally make the most of our time in Rhodes.

1 | Booking your rental car

Renting a car in Rhodes is relatively cheap. Demand for rental cars during the peak summer months is usually high so it’s worth booking your car in advance.

Renting a car in Rhodes tip: The biggest benefit of having a rental car in Rhodes is that you can easily access the lesser known sights and also visit the popular ones before they get busy. It also saves you the cost of the airport transfers and transport during your stay.

2 | Choosing a rental car

We highly recommend getting the smallest car possible that will suit your travel party. It was just the two of us in Rhodes and we traveled with hand luggage only so we rented a super-compact car. This proved extremely useful as parking at our hotel in the Old Town was much easier with a smaller car. You’ll also have many more parking options with a small car when you visit the rest of the island.

Renting a car in Rhodes tip: Some of the roads and parking spaces are extremely narrow in Rhodes so renting a small car will save you a lot of headaches during your trip!

3 | Renting Eligibility

Most rental companies require drivers to be at least 21 and to have held their license for more than one year. Some companies impose a surcharge for renters aged under 25.

4 | Rental Car Insurance

There is a mandatory minimum of third-party liability insurance required when renting a car in Rhodes. This will be included in the base price of your rental agreement, however we highly recommend purchasing fully comprehensive cover with your rental car.

The basic cover usually includes third-party liability and a basic Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) that covers damage to the car in the event of an accident or accidental damage. This basic CDW usually has an excess payable by you in the event of damage to the rental car. This excess varies by rental car agency, however they usually range from a few hundred Euros up to thousands.

It is possible to reduce or remove this excess by paying an additional daily rate for full CDW cover. We always purchase this additional insurance and recommend it for two reasons:

• it gives us peace of mind that any damage to the car is covered (i.e. less stress on your trip)
• returning and picking up your rental car is a lot easier and quicker as the rental car agencies usually don’t check the car for damage at pick up or return.

Where to Stay in Rhodes

5 | Sim card

We recommend purchasing a SIM card with data when traveling around Greece. We always find having mobile data invaluable for navigating in the rental car. It also meant that we could research places to visit when we were on the road.

6 | International Driving Licence

An International Drivers Permit (IDP) is a document separate from your driving license that is essentially a translation of your actual driver’s licence to several different languages. This allows authorities in the country you are visiting to understand your actual driving license.

Renting a Car in Rhodes tip: Since June 2022 visitors with licences from the following countries now do not require an IDP to rent a car in Greece: European/USA/Canada/Australia/UK driving licence holders do not require an International driving permit to rent a car in Greece.

An IDP is a document, separate from your driving licence that is simply a translation of your driving licence to a number of different languages. IDP’s are not expensive and we highly recommend having one when renting a car, even if it’s not a legal requirement to have it in a country.

We understand that renters with licenses from the following countries do require an International Driving Licence. This list is not exhaustive, so please check the latest rules before traveling if you don’t have a driver’s license issued by the above countries that do not require an IDP:

Argentina, China, Colombia, India, Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Malaysia

Renting a car in Rhodes tip: While rental companies don’t always check if renters have an international licence, it will likely be an issue if you are stopped by the police or if you are in a traffic accident. Make sure to check the rules of the rental and if you require an international licence prior to travelling.

7 | Driving style

Like most small islands, driving in Rhodes is a lot more relaxed than mainland Greece and the drivers are courteous and easy going. We didn’t experience any issues or major traffic in Rhodes – the only real challenge was finding parking in busier locations such as Rhodes Town.

8 | Drive on the right-hand side of the road

Driving in Rhodes is on the right-hand side of the road similar to most of Europe and the USA.

9 | Road quality

The main road in Rhodes (the 95) which covers the eastern part of the island is in very good condition. The island’s other roads also fine for driving. Once

The smaller roads can be extremely winding and hilly so make sure you know where you’re going before you set out! We found these roads safe however you do need to take your time and watch out for local traffic such as farm machinery or cars.

10 | Parking

Most of the parking on Rhodes is free – Rhodes City is the only place where paid parking is enforced. We were lucky as our Old Town hotel had one parking space and we were able to use it freely during our low season stay.

Free street parking is almost non-existent in the old town and even finding an empty metered spot can be a challenge.

In Rhodes Town, you will notice the color coded road markings: white lines indicate free 24 hour parking, blue lines or a blue sign with a white P mean that a ticket is required the exception of Sunday’s (tickets are available at the automated machines) and yellow lines mean no parking or stopping.

Renting a car in Rhodes tip: try the windmills at Mandraki or the entrance to Amboise Gate. If you are lucky you might secure a free parking space.

11 | Traffic

We didn’t encounter any significant traffic in Rhodes. The port area of the Old Town can get busy however the traffic does move and areas around tourist sights like the Lindos Acropolis, one of the best things to do in Rhodes .

12 | Navigation

Google Maps worked fine and the app navigated us well during our time in Rhodes. There are not many roads in Rhodes so it’s difficult to get lost but it is helpful to have maps if you plan to explore the south of the island

Fuel is relatively expensive in Rhodes at around €1.60 per litre for petrol and €1.40 per litre for diesel. There are a number of stations around the island and most take both cash and credit cards.

Fuel is expensive but, given the island is relatively small, it’s unlikely you will spend much filling up during your time in Rhodes.

There are currently no toll roads in Rhodes.

15 | Car Seats for babies and children

We usually travel with our own car seats. It is also possible to reserve these with the car rental company. The rules state:

• Children under 135cm and aged between 3 and 11 must use an appropriate child restraint,
• Children under 3 must use an appropriate child restraint.
• The airbag must be deactivated if placing a rear-facing infant in the front passenger seat.

Rhodes , Greece , is an impressive island with historical sites everywhere. Due to its size and the sheer number of things to see and do, you could easily spend a week there. It is also a relatively flat island with reasonably low traffic and straightforward roads. For that reason, driving in Rhodes is one of the best ways to experience all the island has to offer.

Well, what about an ATV or scooter? Those are options too! This guide to renting a car in Rhodes also applies to alternative forms of transportation. If you’re wondering if having your own vehicle is right for you, keep reading. I will cover the top tips for getting around the island and how and where to get your rental.

Tips for Renting a Car in Rhodes

During our trip to Rhodes, we decided that the best way to get around was by car. Our overall experience was great! Here are some essential tips to know before visiting Rhodes. 

Why Rent a Car in Rhodes

Rhodes, Greece, is a spectacular island rich in history and culture. It is also one of the most remote Greek islands and one of the largest. For that reason, renting a car is one of the best ways to explore all areas. 

If you plan on staying in one location, such as Old Town Rhodes, then getting around by foot is sufficient. But a car is the only way to get from place to place besides a guided tour if you want to venture to Lindos or some other remote locations. 

We would rather have the flexibility to get around on our own and stop by interesting locations we may encounter along the way. Having your own rental car is the best way to do this. And with Rhodes having so many hard to reach areas, it is sometimes the only way to get there.

Even if you are staying for a few days, the 45-minute drive between Lindos and Old Town is much better spent in a rental than a tour bus. At least, I think so.

How to Book a Rental Car

Overall, renting a car in Rhodes is similar to other places in Greece. If you are traveling between June and August, the prices will always be higher than during the shoulder season. Demand will also be much higher, so booking in advance will help ensure you get the car you want.

To save a little money, you can research discount rates. Some places will give you a cheaper rate if you rent a car for longer than a day or two. The most affordable rate you can find is €20 per day, with rates reaching around €60 for a standard automatic car. 

My go-to rental car sites are Discover Cars and RentalCars.com . Both these sites cross-reference prices from different companies to give you the best deals. You can also choose where you’d like to pick up your car.

Where to Pick Up Your Rental Car

If you stay in Old Town Rhodes, you will have a few places to pick from. An added perk is that these companies stay open 24 hours, allowing you to return your car whenever you want. We spent our first full day exploring the Old Town, so renting a car there made the most sense. 

Just outside the main gate, there are several rental companies. We picked our vehicle up at Port Rent a Car, but other places are just as good around town. They were extremely friendly and went through some popular locations with us. They even recommended a restaurant that was a local favorite. It ended up being the best meal we had in Rhodes.

You can also pick up your car rental from the airport. Since Rhodes is such a remote island, you should fly there instead of taking the ferry. If you are staying elsewhere on the island or want a car right away, you can pick up your car here. 

Best Cars to Choose

The price of your rental depends a lot on what type of car you want. One important thing to know is that manual cars are popular in Europe, and renting an automatic car will cost a little more. Unless you are extremely experienced driving manual, I recommend sticking to automatic, especially when driving somewhere new.

Most cars come standard with air conditioning and basic equipment. You can also purchase a GPS for an additional price. However, I always buy an international data plan to use the navigation on my phone instead. 

Another thing to think about is what size vehicle you want. A general rule is the larger the vehicle, the more expensive. You honestly don’t need anything large in Rhodes. You will find parking much easier in a smaller car as parking can be hard to come by, and most spots will be tight.

TRAVEL TIP: Gas is not included in the rental cost. You will have to fill up what you used on your own before returning the vehicle.

Car Rental Insurance

Yes, you should get it. No matter where you travel, you should always purchase rental insurance. The extra cost can save you many headaches and give you additional peace of mind. 

Rental Requirements

Generally, you can get any rental if you are over 21. Some companies charge an extra fee for drivers under 25, though! Bring an updated driver’s license when you pick up your rental. In addition, you will need an International Driving Permit if you are not an EU citizen.

International Driving Permit

Most European countries require an International Driving Permit on top of your regular one if you do not have an EU license.  This license states that you are eligible to drive in any foreign country. It is very simple to apply for and costs a small fee.

If you plan on renting any vehicle, apply for your permit at least two weeks before your trip. For an additional fee, you can also get a digital copy within an hour on some sites. Just make sure to get it before you leave on your trip! 

Tips for Driving in Rhodes

Overall, driving in Rhodes was very laidback. There was little traffic on the main roads, and the signs were easy to spot. What I liked was the signs pointing to attractions nearby. It made finding our way around a lot easier.  Once you get closer to Rhodes Town, it gets congested, but it is far less traffic than places like Rome or Athens. 

Driving Rules in Rhodes

• Like most places, you drive on the right side of the road.
• You are not allowed to use a phone while driving.
• Seat belts are mandatory.
• Parking around Rhodes Town usually is not free. You must buy a ticket at a nearby machine once you’ve parked.
• The main roads have a speed limit of 80km/hr. (50mph). Once you get closer to the towns, the speed drops to 50km/hr. (30 mph). If you need more clarification, keep an eye out for the speed limit signs, there were plenty around town.

Getting from Old Town to Lindos

The route between the two main towns, National Road 95, is simple to navigate. It is a two-lane, paved road with incredible views of the sea on one side. In addition, popular beaches like Anthoney Quinn Bay and St. Paul’s bay are located just off 95 and are easy to get to. The total travel time between Rhodes Town and Lindos is about 45 minutes without traffic. 

Driving to Remote Areas

The roads get trickier once you leave the main streets. Remote areas like Monolithos Castle mean you will be traveling through small, winding paths and hills. These are much narrower, with many being dirt roads. They are, however, not very busy, so take your time driving on them. Also, if you plan on visiting one of these locations, visit during the day when there is plenty of light and ideal driving conditions. 

Parking in Rhodes

Depending on where you are going, parking options differ. In general, beach parking was free with plenty of available spots. The two places where parking was the most challenging were Lindos and Old Town Rhodes. Why? Both areas are comprised of pedestrian-only streets, causing you to park on the outskirts of town. On top of that, those are the two most popular places to stay and visit. 

Parking in Lindos

Several free dirt parking lots are available near Lindos at the top of the hill. You will also see a small roadside shop selling snacks and souvenirs. Even during peak season, you can find a place to park your vehicle. However, it may be further out if you wait until the middle of the day to get there. To get to the Village of Lindos , you will follow the sidewalk down the hill straight into the city from the parking lot. The entrance to the Lindos Acropolis is within the village. 

Parking in Old Town Rhodes

One advantage to renting a scooter over a car is the ease of parking around Old Town. Outside the fortified area’s main entrance is a large parking lot designated for scooters. However, parking is much more challenging if you rent a car, and most lots charge a fee.

Making the Most of Your Rental

Now that you’ve booked your rental, it is time to start planning! One of the first things to look at is the general location of the sites you’d like to see. If you don’t plan on having a rental the entire time, start with the walkable places and save the distant ones for later.

Then, plan your itinerary based on the proximity of attractions. For example, we hit the Village of Lindos, the Acropolis of Lindos , and two nearby beaches in one day since they were all close together. Stick to one side of the island if you plan to spend an entire day beach hopping. 

Road 95 is the main road between Lindos and Old Town on the island’s east side. You will find many popular beaches along this side of Rhodes. Attractions on the west coast include the Butterfly Valley, Ancient Kamiros, and Monolithos Castle.

Other Ways to Get Around Rhodes

Public transportation.

The cheapest way to get around Rhodes Town is by bus. It is just over €2 per ticket and will take you anywhere you need. You can download the Rhodes Public Transport App to see bus stops and routes closest to you. In addition, the bus connects Rhodes Town to the airport for a cheap way to get between the two. 

Take a Taxi

Taxis are an easy way to get to and from Rhodes airport and cost about €25. If you need to get to Lindos, you are looking at about €60. Taxis are best for traveling with lots of luggage or longer distances. They also make the most sense if you spend most of your time in one place. If you plan to spend multiple days exploring the island’s different areas, you will either want to join a tour or get a rental. 

Where to Stay in Rhodes

There are some fantastic places around the island to stay for all types of travelers. For those looking for luxury resorts near the water, staying near the Acropolis of Lindos is a terrific place. However, if you want to be in the middle of it all, you will want to stay in Old Town Rhodes. 

That is where you will find the majority of the main attractions. Plus, you are within walking distance of the harbor, shops, and restaurants. The boutique hotels here are an attraction in themselves. Since the Old Town is a medieval fortified city, many accommodations are refurbished apartments that knights lived in a few hundred years ago.

Kókkini Porta Rossa

The luxurious boutique hotel was originally a knight’s home in the 15th century. The hotel has five different suites, each with a separate living room and decorated in period pieces with touches of modern amenities. With fireplaces in each room, private gardens, balconies, and complimentary breakfast, Kókkini Porta Rossa is one of the top-rated places to stay in Rhodes Old Town.

Luxury Hotel: Check Prices

10GR Hotel & Wine Bar

The 10GR Hotel and Wine Bar is a luxury hotel inside the Old Town. We absolutely loved our stay here! The rooms are built inside caves but have all the modern and luxurious amenities you need.

The rooms also have small outdoor terraces. With one of the best wine bars in Rhodes and close to the harbor and historical attractions, 10GR Hotel was the perfect place to stay for our first visit. 

Mid-Range Hotel: Check Prices 

Nikolis Historic Boutique Hotel

The S. Nikolis Historic Hotel is one of the few places to stay in the Medieval part of Old Town. The rooms are situated in a historic building dating back to the 1300s.

Each room is uniquely decorated to fit the building and has original features such as 700-year-old windows. The room also comes with a small balcony or shared patio. 

Mid-Range Hotel: Check Prices

Rhodes is a fascinating island with a long history and a melting pot of cultures. Renting a car in Rhodes is an easy and efficient way to get around the island.

Greece remains a mysterious and enticing place for avid explorers. Would-be Greek philosophers may ask questions about the meaning of life, why we’re here, and what is love? But the real question when visiting Rhodes is should I spend 3, 4 or 5 days in Rhodes? Of course, this depends on how you want to build your Rhodes itinerary – but don’t worry, we’ve got all the best tips and top sights to see below!

How Many Days in Rhodes?

When planning your trip, you will definitely wonder how many days to spend in Rhodes. Many visitors simply stop for the day on a cruise ship to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site — Rhodes Town — but this barely scratches the surface of this enigmatic island.

Rhodes is also a destination for package holidays – many visitors spend a week poolside at resorts, never getting out to explore the island.

To see the island at its best, fully exploring its multitude of villages and incredible beaches, I recommend at least 5 days on the island.

But don’t worry, if you only have 4 days in Rhodes, you’ll still be able to manage a beach day as well as exploring Rhodes town and other highlights.

You would struggle to do the island justice if you were spending 3 days in Rhodes. You’ll see how beautiful the island is, and will be dying to come back and explore it a little more in-depth.

Getting To & Around Rhodes

You’ll be pleased to hear that Rhodes is easy to get to and the island is well-linked to the rest of Greece and Europe.

Many European airlines serve Rhodes International Airport and there are connections from Athens and many other Greek islands along with many major European cities. Many of these flights are seasonal and operate during the summer season of April to October.

The airport is a 30-minute drive from Rhodes Town. Expect to pay €25 in a taxi, or opt for the public bus for €3 which will double the journey time to around an hour. You can also organise a private transfer here.

Rhodes is an excellent place to start an island-hopping adventure of the Dodecanese islands. The port is located a stone’s throw from the city walls. You can book ferries here.

The easiest way to get around Rhodes is to rent a car – the island is large (though not as large when compared to Crete ) and you’ll spend a long time on the bus. You can browse car rental options here.

If you’re spending the majority of your time in Rhodes Town, you’ll be able to go car-free. You can also take organised trips including this full-day tour to Lindos Town or this catamaran cruise.

You could easily spend a day ambling around Rhodes old town. Make sure not to miss seeing the major sights, and wander amongst the minarets, medieval buildings and clock towers. You can book an old town walking tour here.

The best time to get out with a camera is early in the morning before day trippers arrive, or in the evening as the cruise ships leave.

Our Lady of the Castle

This beautiful church started life as a frescoed Byzantine church, before being converted into a European Catholic gothic church. The Ottomans converted it into a mosque, and many of the frescoes were lost in the process. Few remain, but they are beautiful and incredibly evocative.

The Street of the Knights

The most beautiful street in the old town is the Street of the Knights – it looks more or less exactly as it would have 500 years ago. The streets are cobbled and flags still fly above the lodges to the different nationalities of the Knights of Rhodes.

The Palace of the Grand Master

Undoubtedly the most famous sight on any tour of medieval Rhodes is the Grand Master’s Palace. It’s been a citadel since the 7th century, and eventually became the administrative centre of the old town under the rule of The Knights of St John in the 14th century. It served as the residence of the Grand Master of the knights.

Damaged by the Ottomans, and rebuilt by the Italians in the 1930’s it is now one of the best examples of medieval architecture in Greece. This imposing fortress makes for great photos from the outside, and is an atmospheric museum inside. You can pre-book tickets here.

Archaeological Museum of Rhodes

Featuring everything you’d expect from an island with such a rich history – delve into 2000-plus years of Greek, Byzantine, Crusader and Ottoman history. Whilst the museum is fascinating, the building itself is as much of an attraction – it’s the old hospital for the Knights of St John.

And if you want to see some ruins that are still standing, you could also opt to visit the Acropolis of Rhodes, which is also located in Rhodes Town.

Day 2 – Dig deeper in Rhodes Town

For the second day of your Rhodes Itinerary, we’ll be spending a little more time around the interesting hub of the town of Rhodes.

Explore the backstreets

The Medieval town of Rhodes is a UNESCO site, and whilst it is very heavily visited – most visitors only see around 10% of the old city, the main thoroughfares and monuments that you explored on day one.

Pull the curtain back and get yourself lost in the winding alleys and streets in the southern part of the old town to see how life is for the town’s permanent residents.

Church of Saint Phanourios

Step back in time to the 13th century and visit this tiny atmospheric church. It’s still in use to this day, and you can see the faint medieval frescos, alongside more modern Orthodox imagery.

Walk the Medieval Moat

One of my favourite things to do in Rhodes is walking the medieval moat. It’s a great way to get some respite from the crowds and the midday heat!

Now a green park, offering shade and incredible views of the medieval walls, it gives you a sense of the size of the city, and how imposing it must have been for visitors in days gone by.

Mandraki Harbour

In antiquity, visitors arriving by boat passed under the legs of the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, before entering the harbour. The Colossus fell in the 7th century CE, but the harbour remains prosperous. Now it’s full of sailboats, restaurants and traditional windmills – a great place to grab a glass of wine and watch the world go by.

Savvas Sandals

Open since the 1950s, this third-generation shop is the last traditional sandal maker on the island. They’ll measure your feet, choose a style, and handcraft your sandals with ethically sourced leather.

This is one souvenir that really gives back to the local community in the right way – and one you will treasure for many years to come.

Day 3 – Enjoy Rhodes’ Beaches

If you’re only spending 3 days on Rhodes Island, then it’s important that we at least get a day at the beach. Rhodes receives the most days of sunshine for any area in Greece – more than 300 days! Below we’ve listed some great beaches for you to explore – you can also take a day cruise to visit some of them.

The closest beach to Rhodes town, you can reach Elli Beach in a matter of minutes from the old town. Elli is a well-established organised beach – it’s a pebbly beach with plenty of sections to lay out a towel, with an offshore platform with diving boards that you can swim out to.

There are also more organised beach clubs along the beach, and the excellent Ronda Beach Club is the best of these!

Anthony Quinn Bay

When actor Anthony Quinn was filming “The Guns of Navarone” in Rhodes, he immediately fell in love with this tiny beautiful cove. Featuring a small beach, sharp rocks and impeccably clear water, it’s easy to see what Quinn loved.

Be aware the narrow nature of the beach means it gets very busy in the summer months, so plan on arriving very early, or mingling in with the crowds!

Traganou Beach

This pebbly beach has clear deep waters, and beautiful caves to explore. There’s an easy-going taverna, affordable sunbeds and offers an overall relaxed vibe.

Tsambika Beach

A sandy bay with crystalline blue waters, Tsambika Beach is arguably the most beautiful beach on the entire island of Rhodes.

Located near the village of Kolympia, Tsambika takes its name from the monastery overlooking the beach. Famed for helping struggling couples conceive, the walk up to the monastery is not for the faint-hearted but will reward you with breathtaking views over the Aegean.

Day 4 – Explore Lindos Village

Next to the medieval Old Town, the whitewashed village of Lindos is the most visited destination on the island. If you’re spending four days on the island you have to visit this part of the island! You can organise a day trip here if you don’t have your own transport.

One of the top tourist destinations in the Dodecanese, when you first lay eyes on Lindos, it’s easy to understand why. This sugarcube-esque village is amongst the oldest in Greece, first mentioned in Homer’s ‘The Iliad’.

Wandering between the houses, shops and cafes is a delight – but you’ll want to get there early; the midday heat can be incapacitating, and the cruise ship crowds will usually arrive around 11am.

If you want to relax, you can also go for a swim at Lindos Beach – the perfect place to beat the heat!

The Acropolis of Lindos

Another reason to get to Lindos early is to be the first person through the ancient door that marks the entrance to the Acropolis of Lindos. At a height of around 160m above sea level, the many steps to the Acropolis can be testing – bring good shoes and water, and take your time.

Once at the top, you’ll find steps built by the Knights of St John, beautiful sculptures of ancient warships, the ruins of an Orthodox church, and the remains of the Temple of Athena Lindia. But besides these historical wonders, the real reward is the incredible view of St Paul’s Bay, the island of Rhodes and the Aegean Sea.

St Paul’s Bay

Follow your nose down to the beautiful rocky bay that nearly encloses St Paul’s Bay. On the way stop to admire the 4th century BCE ancient theatre.

One of the more expensive beaches in Rhodes, it’s very popular for weddings and photoshoots. It’s also well worth going for a dip in the sea to cool off from the midday heat.

Day 5 – Canyons, Caves, Beaches & More!

It’s your final day in paradise! There are so many things in Rhodes that we still haven’t mentioned, so I’ll try and give you a rundown of them here – one could even think five days isn’t enough for your trip to Rhodes!

Jacob’s Canyon

This beautiful and rugged canyon is a fairly challenging walk through the stony passageways of the west of the island. It can get very hot, and there are scrambles through the two to three-hour hike, but it is quite the adventure.

Cave of Archangel Michael Panormitis

Just outside of the main town of Rhodes, on a path between the Akti Kanari and Kato Petres beaches you’ll find quite an unusual sight. Look for the blue cross and follow the path to discover a cave full overflowing with icons of the Archangel Michael.

Kalithea Springs

A beautiful mashup of history, architecture and nature – Kalithea Springs is well worth stopping by. This beautiful bay is rumoured to have ancient healing properties, and the area is encompassed in an impressive art-deco complex, built during the Italian occupation.

Valley of the Butterflies

Deep inland, you can find this 600-acre nature park. Best visited at the end of the wet season, this valley is well organised, has walking paths and is littered with gum trees which attract thousands of mating butterflies every year. It is a true spectacle of nature, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Rhodes and is well worth the small entry fee.

Symi Island

If you don’t want to visit the above places on the island itself, consider heading out on a day trip from Rhodes to one of my favourite places on Earth. The quaint, colourful island of Symi is a short ferry ride from Rhodes. You can also organise a boat cruise here.

The island’s capital, Ano Symi, is as relaxed as it gets, built in terraces around a gorgeous crystal clear harbour. The island is famous for sponge diving and is a great place for fresh seafood.

Attiki Hotel – A homely bed and breakfast location in the old town of Rhodes, this is great for mid-range visitors. They offer both double rooms (some with balconies) and family rooms along with a great breakfast.

Just to put things into perspective, Rhodes is the fourth biggest island in Greece, and the largest in the Dodecanese islands group . It covers an area of 1,401 square kms / 541 sq miles, and its coastline measures about 220 km / 137 miles!

As the distances from north to south and from east to west are quite long, you’ll need to pre-plan your itineraries to make the most of your time. 

How to visit Rhodes Greece

Rhodes is a destination that will appeal to most people. It’s best known for its fantastic Old Town and impressive ancient Acropolis of Lindos.

However, there is so much more to do on this beautiful island. You can explore the wonderful beaches, discover lesser visited historical sites, and explore the more faraway villages.

Deciding what you want to see is very important before choosing how to get around. While the main sights are easily accessible on foot or by bus, you will need some other form of transportation to see the more remote areas.

How to see Rhodes Greece

Once you have decided what you want to do in Rhodes, here are the main ways to see the island:

1. Explore Rhodes Town on foot

Rhodes Town, located on the north coast of the island, is a fascinating place to explore on foot. With beautiful architecture, excellent restaurants and shops, and lots of historical sites and museums, there is so much to see here!

Some of the best places to visit in Rhodes Town include the following:

• The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes
• The Archaeological Museum
• Our Lady of the Castle, a large church just next to the museum
• Mandraki Harbor, with the famous windmills and St Nicholas fortress, and the whole Mantraki area
• The Acropolis and impressive ancient stadium on Monte Smith Hill
• The Modern Greek Art Museum of Rhodes city.

In just three days in the town, we walked just over 30 kms (18.6 miles) around the narrow streets! Strolling along the castle moat was one of my favourite things to do in Rhodes Town. I’m still trying to get my head around how unbelievably big it is!

You will need GOOD walking shoes with cushioning, as the cobbled streets can make your feet hurt otherwise. Don’t forget to bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunblock – even on an overcast day, the sun is still very strong.

2. Take the hop-on hop-off bus around Rhodes Old Town

Another option are the hop-on hop-off buses going around Rhodes Town. These are ideal for people who prefer not to walk too much, and for visitors who are pushed for time.

This is a fun, relaxed way to see the main landmarks around the city center. Moreover, you can listen to the audio commentary and find out more about the island’s history.

Tip: If you are visiting Rhodes on a summer holiday, take the hop-on hop-off buses during the hottest hours of the day, and benefit from the air-condition!

3. Use public transportation to get around Rhodes island

The public buses are a relatively straightforward and inexpensive way to get around Rhodes. Ticket prices vary from about 1 to 7 euro, depending on the route. As an example, the bus fare from the Old Town to Lindos costs 5.50 euro one way.

There are two bus companies in Rhodes, each serving different parts of the island. 

Public transport Rhodes – RODA buses

The first bus company is called RODA, and their buses are painted blue and white. The central bus station in Rhodes Town is located on Averoff Street .

Apart from Rhodes Town urban area, RODA buses serve the north / west coast of the island. They cover popular resorts like Ixia and Ialysos, and go all the way south to Monolithos. They also provide a service to Faliraki beach.

To use these buses, you will need to purchase a ticket before boarding at the designated sales points, and validate it on the bus.

Public transport Rhodes – KTEL buses 

The other bus company is called KTEL, and their buses are painted orange and white. The central KTEL bus station in Rhodes is also located on Averoff Street , across the street from the RODA bus station. 

KTEL buses connect Rhodes Old Town with the towns and villages on the east coast, like Faliraki, Afandou, Lindos and Gennadi, and go all the way to Prasonisi on the south.

Conveniently, bus stops are numbered, so it’s easy to know where to get off! You will always find a timetable on each bus stop – for example, the Faliraki to Lindos bus timetable will be posted at the bus stop at Faliraki.

If you are taking the bus from the Old Town, you can get your ticket at the special kiosk. Alternatively, you can buy your ticket on the bus. Try to have exact change if possible.

Buses in Rhodes can get crowded

The main downside with buses is that it can take you a long time to travel between places. In addition, popular routes, like the Rhodes Town – Lindos route, are always busy, so you may end up in a very crowded bus.

Moreover, not all places are connected on direct bus routes. Depending on where you are staying and where you want to go, this could increase your Rhodes travel time significantly.

For example, if you wanted to go from Ialyssos to Faliraki by bus, you’d have to use two RODA services:

• Bus Ialyssos to Rhodes town
• Rhodes Town to Faliraki. 

Similarly, if you are staying in one of the hotels in Ixia or Ialysos and want to get to Lindos, you’d have to use two services:

• RODA bus to Rhodes Town
• Onward KTEL bus to Lindos. 

In cases like that, you might want to consider other means of transportation.

4. Hire a rental car, scooter or ATV in Rhodes

If you are happy to drive in Greece, one of the best ways to explore Rhodes is by rental car, ATV or scooter. Besides the Old Town, where cars are prohibited, the rest of the island is easily accessible by vehicle.

While a car hire is not necessarily the cheapest option to get around Rhodes, it will offer you much more freedom than the public buses. A car is ideal if you want to visit the more remote villages or beautiful beaches away from the crowds.

Apart from a car, you could also consider renting an ATV / quads or scooter. These don’t seem to be as popular as in the Cyclades, probably because the distances in Rhodes are much longer. If you rent any of those, make sure to use plenty of sunblock on your arms and legs.

Where to rent a car, ATV or scooter in Rhodes

Tips on driving in Rhodes

The roads in Rhodes are mostly paved, and they are generally in good condition. If you’ve driven on some other Greek islands, like Milos , you’ll be totally fine – dirt roads seem to be an exception in Rhodes!

Parking can be an issue in the most popular places like Lindos, or around the Old Town. In these cases, it’s best to leave your car a little further out, as you might get stuck in traffic otherwise. Also, note that the historic centre of Rhodes town is fully pedestrianized.

5. Take one of the organized excursions in Rhodes

A relaxed and hassle-free way to see some of the popular landmarks in Rhodes is to take an organized bus tour. Many people choose to stay in the Old Town, and take a couple of day trips to see some more of the island.

7. Take a taxi in Rhodes

Another option is to take a taxi. Taxis in Rhodes operate at fixed prices. You can easily find a pricelist at any taxi stop on the island, or online .

Generally speaking, a taxi is not the cheapest way to get around Rhodes. As an example, a one-way taxi from the Old Town to Lindos costs 62 euro, and there are extra charges for taxis booked through a call.

That said, taxi drivers will charge the same amount for 1-4 passengers. If you are travelling on your own, you can try to take a group shared taxi with other travelers, and reduce the transportation costs.

There are also numerous transfers you can choose from, such as this Rhodes transfer .

Note that, at time of writing, there is no Uber in Rhodos. 

The central taxi station in Rhodes Town is located at Mandraki: Taxi rank Rhodes Old Town . There are many others in the town, for example close to the statue of Diagoras, close to Kolona harbor, right on Saint Nicholas square, outside Rodini Park, and close to Analipsi church. 

How to get to Rhodes island Greece

Rhodes has an international airport, Diagoras. In spring, summer and autumn, there are dozens of direct flights from many airports in Europe. During the low season, you can get a quick flight from Athens.

If you book in advance, you can easily find cheap flights from many countries, especially if you want to travel outside the peak season.

Moreover, Rhodes is directly connected with the port of Piraeus in Athens, and most of the Dodecanese islands on various ferry routes.

Getting to Rhodes Old Town from Diagoras airport

Rhodes Airport Diagoras is located on the north / west coast of the island. It’s about 16 kms / 10 miles out of Rhodes Old Town. There are four ways to get from the airport to Rhodes Old Town: public bus, taxi, pre-booked transfer , and rental car.

Tickets for the public bus cost 2.50 euro (3 euro if you have luggage), and you can find bus timetables here . A taxi or pre-booked transfer costs about 25-30 euro, or more if you are arriving after midnight.

If you are thinking to rent a car from the airport, note that vehicles are not allowed in the historic centre of Rhodes.

When you went to Rhodes did you take cash or card? If I am going for 5 days is £400 enough? Should I take half cash and half card?

Hi Rachel – as you can imagine costs vary a lot depending on accommodation, types of places you eat, etc. For 2023, my partner and I tend to spend about 50 euros a day which includes all of our expenses. If you have already paid your accommodation, 400 GBP for 5 days should be more than enough. Cards usually work fine, but it’s always best to have some cash in hand, just in case a place doesn’t take a card, or if the electricity is down, as happened to us yesterday 🙂 Enjoy your time!!

It’s not hard to get car insurance quotes online from many companies. Make sure you compare the same coverage options throughout the quote-gathering process. And don’t forget to look for car insurance discounts, like breaks for being a good driver, paying your premium in full or driving a new car.

When shopping for the best car insurance, keep the following tips in mind.

Assess your needs. Before buying car insurance, take a moment to reflect on what’s important to you and your family. For example, maybe you prioritize affordability and a well-polished mobile app, but don’t need accident forgiveness .  

Consider small insurers. There are lots of small insurance companies you’ve probably never heard of. These regional insurers may provide lower rates and better customer service than the big companies you see advertised on TV.

Work with an independent agent. While it may be easy to get quotes yourself, independent car insurance agents and brokers can streamline the process. These experts vet companies and compile quotes from small and large insurers on your behalf. Independent agents and brokers can especially come in handy if you have a less-than-perfect driving record and can’t find insurance on your own.

Do your research. Search online for recent mentions of a company in the news before buying a policy, recommends DeLong. If you find a company has lots of recent lawsuits against it, you may want to think twice about signing on the dotted line. “And if they've had to pay out settlements, that's an even bigger red flag,” DeLong says.

Shop around once a year. Make a practice of shopping for car insurance every year — especially if price is important to you. Insurers adjust car insurance rates regularly, so what might have been the most affordable option last year may no longer be a bargain.

Who is Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito?

Samuel Alito was born in 1950 in Trenton, New Jersey. A graduate of Princeton University and Yale Law School, he served as an editor of the Yale Law Journal and later clerked for Judge Leonard A. Garth on the U.S. Court of Appeals 3rd Circuit.

He has also served as U.S. Attorney and Assistant U.S. Attorney of the District of New Jersey, Assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General, and Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the Office of Legal Counsel.

He has been married to Martha-Ann Bomgardner since 1985, and the pair has two children.

Justice Samuel Alito’s partisan 2006 appointment

The process to fill Sandra Day O’Connor’s seat on the bench proved rocky from the start. President George W. Bush’s first nominee withdrew her nomination in the face of conservative opposition, opening the door to Samuel Alito’s nomination and eventual appointment.

Alito served on the U.S. Court of Appeals 3rd Circuit for 15 years before his Supreme Court nomination. His judicial record during that time came into question during his confirmation hearings, with the American Civil Liberties Union opposing his nomination, citing “a willingness to support government actions that abridge individual freedoms.”

The Senate vote confirming Justice Alito was one of the most expensive and partisan decisions at the time . He succeeded with a vote of 58 to 42, with all but five Democrats opposing.

Ethics controversies: Luxury fishing trip and beach house flags

While Supreme Court justices of every ideological ilk receive criticism over their voting records, it is more unusual for members of the highest court to land in the middle of ethics investigations and public debate. But 2023 reports of Alito’s undisclosed luxury fishing trip with a GOP billionaire whose hedge fund had repeated business before the court sparked just that, leading to an outcry. These investigations also called into question Justice Clarence Thomas’s relationships with partisan figures , and Democrats, in turn, pushed for a code of ethics.

Alito has vehemently denied wrongdoing, calling the article “false” and “misleading” in an op-ed in the Wall Street Journal.

And more recently, flags linked to the “Stop the Steal” movement were seen flying from his homes in Virginia and New Jersey over the past few years, according to reports published in the New York Times this month.

An upside-down American flag flown outside Alito’s Virginia home last summer has become a well-known symbol expressing support with election deniers. An “Appeal to Heaven” flag flown outside the justice’s Long Island home last year is linked to Christian nationalist groups and was carried by some of the Jan. 6 Capitol attackers.

Currently torn between these 2 hotels if anyone has any opinions? It will be for September.

Looking for an all inclusive with creche facilities if there are any other suggestions.

I think no hotels have creche

To experience the real rhodes you must venture away from the over developed coasts (east & west )

get inland to the villages up in the mountains where you will hear very little english spoken

Hi they both have a creche which is why I've narrowed down to those.

I was expecting the why all inclusive comment and did try to edit immediately after I posted but couldn't work out how.

The reason all inclusive is because I'm a newish first time mum and holidays have changed and I'm thinking of what is easier for me. I still plan to eat out at lunch on occasions but eating out in the evening is not feasible with my baby without him making a scene.

Ruth, you don't have to explain to anyone your choice of holiday but believe me you couldn't have picked a better destination for having a baby on holiday, the Greeks absolutely love children of all ages especially babies and you certainly won't have one that is the first to cry, please go out at night and enjoy the time with your little one, trust me there will be plenty of other parents out and about with there young ones

Kyle Larson qualifies 10th for Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte after another busy travel day

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — Kyle Larson qualified 10th for the Coca-Cola 600 following yet another busy day of travel between Indiana and North Carolina.

Larson is attempting to join Tony Stewart on Sunday as the only drivers to complete all 1,100 miles on the same day as part of running the Indianapolis 500-Coca-Cola 600 double .

The biggest question might not be whether the highly talented Larson is up for the task , but if the weather will afford him the opportunity.

Rain is in the forecast for Indianapolis, which has the potential to delay his arrival in Charlotte.

He will start fifth at Indy in Arrow McLaren’s No. 17 car in a race that begins around 12:45 p.m. Eastern on Sunday. Immediately after, Larson will be flown to Charlotte for a race that is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. He will start 10th in the night race.

“Sure, yeah, it’s stressful because weather is always unpredictable,” Larson said earlier in the week. “But you just don’t really know until it’s happening. So it’s hard to plan for weather. You can have all these plans and backup plans and backup plans for the backup plan. But you just can’t really do anything or react until it’s kind of the moment. That’s what’s a little bit stressful.”

Last week, NASCAR made accommodations for Larson by pushing back the start of the All-Star Race 16 minutes to ensure he made it to North Wilkesboro Speedway in time for $1 million exhibition race after spending the day qualifying at the Indianapolis 500.

He arrived at the track more than an hour before the start of the race by helicopter as fans cheered.

It’s unclear how long NASCAR would postpone the start of one of its crown jewel events — one that former President Donald Trump plans to attend — if the Indianapolis 500 runs long.

Joey Logano said he’s OK with NASCAR delaying the green flag start for the Coca-Cola 600 again on Sunday — as long as it is within reason.

“Pushing it back a little bit, I’m sure, doesn’t really affect much,” said Logano, who won last week’s All-Star Race. “Pushing it back a lot does affect it a lot. Are we willing to give up ratings to get somebody here that chose not to be here to go race the Indy 500?”

Logano said it is really cool that Larson is attempting the double, but added, “I don’t think we should wait very, very long by any means because I don’t want it to hurt the rest of our sport for somebody that showed up late for the race. I don’t think I can call in and say, ‘Hey, I’m stuck in traffic because I left my house late. Can you wait for me?’ It’s not gonna happen.”
