Amsterdam mini cruise: what happens and is it worth it? our review

An Amsterdam mini cruise is a really popular way to see the European city from the UK and have a break from the norm without sacrificing too much holiday time from work.

Amsterdam is a wonderful city to spend some time in but are mini cruises a good way to explore? And what happens on a mini cruise? I’m aiming to answer all your questions here!

Before we sailed on a Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise we had no idea about what it would be like and we struggled to find any information or reviews about the trip.

We travelled with our kids, who were young teens at the time but many people do the trip with younger kids, as a couple or even solo!

Best mini cruise to Amsterdam – DFDS

This is the mini cruise that we went on and can recommend. It’s a really great way to see Amsterdam as a short day trip from the UK!

Amsterdam mini cruise

Who runs mini cruises to Amsterdam? There are currently two options if you fancy a mini cruise: DFDS – Sails from Newcastle to Amsterdam (this is the one we did) P&O Ferries – Sails from Hull to Rotterdam

What is a mini cruise?

Sunset on mini cruise to Amsterdam

  • A mini cruise is basically a 2 night ‘cruise’ where you sail late on the first day, sleeping overnight on the boat and arriving at your destination in the morning.
  • You then get transferred to the city in the morning (Amsterdam in this case) for a day trip before returning to the ship and having a night on the boat returning.
  • You arrive back on the third day in the morning.

DFDS do a couple of different mini cruises – you can do one like we did from Newcastle to Amsterdam (and vice versa) or there’s also one that goes from Denmark to Norway (one to try at another date when we’re travelling around Europe again!). They also used to do one from the UK to Norway but I don’t think that one is currently running.

P&O Ferries also do a very similar crossing but it’s from Hull to Rotterdam . They still transfer you to Amsterdam and that’s the destination for the cruise.

How long is an Amsterdam mini cruise?

Typically the cruise lasts 3 days and 2 nights. You spend the first evening on board the ship, arrive at your destination in the morning to spend the day and then sail back on the 2nd evening.

Is a mini cruise expensive?

Cruising as a term tends to conjure up images and feelings of an expensive trip. So is the mini cruise to Amsterdam expensive?

Currently, in 2022, the headline fares are around £40 per person for P&O and £75 per person for DFDS. Your final price is going to depend on what cabin you choose.

There are often deals to be had when booking the mini cruise with DFDS (and I imagine P&O). We managed to find a 2 for 1 offer which made our whole trip with the most basic cabin come in at around £120 for 4 people.

This gave us a super basic cabin (more on that below) for two nights and coach transfers for us all to Amsterdam. You can upgrade to better cabins should you want and if you can I would definitely recommend it.

On board, as probably expected, it’s a little more expensive than your average restaurant or shop. As is also probably expected, we were way too tight to be spending our cash on board so I can’t unfortunately comment on the quality of the restaurants – we took food with us!

I did see that breakfast was around €15 per adult so if you want to eat on board and not bring food with you make sure to budget accordingly.

What’s it like on board?

As I said before, we didn’t eat in the restaurant and we also didn’t partake in any bar entertainment either. (Although I’d say this wasn’t the best idea – as I mention below, it’s a cruise, don’t hole yourself up in your cabin with rubbish food. Go enjoy yourself!)

There was a cinema on board which was about €8 each, so not too dissimilar to on land and we did consider that if the film we wanted was showing on the way back but unfortunately it wasn’t so we didn’t. So if you see a showing you like, watch it, it might not be on the return journey!

Inside cabins on DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The cabin that we had was very basic but did have everything you needed with a small en suite shower and toilet. You also get towels too so no need to bring those either.

The cabins are a little bit small with four people in them, especially when the upper bunks are down, but it wasn’t too bad really. Of course our kids were nearly grown so it was like having 4 adults in there.

One issue that we had with the cabins were that they were incredibly hot. We did wonder at one point whether they maybe didn’t want you too comfy in the cabins and wanted you to be out spending in the bars! It was like that both ways and just spoiled what would have been a quite enjoyable time otherwise.

Tip – make sure you have plenty of drinks with you. It’ll make the hot cabins a bit better.

Can you leave your belongings on the ferry?

One thing we wondered about and were a little worried about was whether we could leave our belongings on the ship while on the day trip – if you’re also worried, don’t be.

You keep the same cabin on the outward and inward legs so you can leave whatever you need to on board.

(This was correct when we did the trip – might be worth confirming with the ferry company if it’s a concern for you)

How long do you get in Amsterdam on the mini cruise?

Ok, this is quite a big and common question – how long do you get there? It might vary due to the company and any traffic but in general:

You get about 4 and a half hours in the city of Amsterdam on the mini cruise.

What to do in Amsterdam on a mini cruise?

Your time is going to be limited so bear that in mind when choosing what to do. Here are some ideas of places to go that can be done in the time you have. Unfortunately trips to tulip field and windmills like Kinderdijk will have to wait – you won’t have time.

I highly recommend getting tickets in advance if you can – Amsterdam can be busy!

  • Canal cruise
  • Van Gogh Museum
  • Ann Frank Museum or walking tour
  • Heineken Experience
  • Rijksmuseum
  • Madame Tussauds

What happens on the day trip?

You arrive in the Netherlands at about 9am at a place called IJmuiden which is around a 45 minute drive from the centre of Amsterdam.

After waiting for the car passengers to depart it’s the foot passengers turn to go through passport control. It was fine and fairly quick on the Amsterdam side but returning to Newcastle took forever so something to think about if you’re doing the opposite journey.

The coaches are waiting to take you in to the city and once full they head off, dropping you outside a hotel just opposite the train station so perfect for seeing the old town or getting on a canal cruise.

We probably arrived in Amsterdam at around 10.30am – 11am ish which gave us about 4 and a half hours before we got picked up.

It definitely didn’t seem enough to enjoy all there is in Amsterdam, but for us, as it was our first trip to the city it was nice enough to get a feel for it and wander round.

I really wanted to do some of the museums in Amsterdam and it’s really not enough time for doing that and exploring – but perhaps next time we’ll be able to stay longer!  There are some really great kids museums in the Netherlands so definitely one to return for!

We were lucky and had a dry day to wander around – it would have been a different story if it was raining, but if you’re worried about that make sure you have some activities planned to keep you dry.

Is a mini cruise worth it?

So the main question would be, is it worth it overall?

We all really enjoyed our time away and for what we paid I think it was definitely worth it.

My tips to make the most of the mini cruise to Europe

If I was to do the cruise again here would be my tips to make the most of the day:

  • if possible, upgrade the cabin so you’re feeling fresh and so that the cruise section of the trip is part of the experience
  • I’d enjoy the restaurants on board more and the entertainment – honestly we used to be on such a budget we’d scrimp everywhere which isn’t always advisable. I’d say that while you can do that, since the mini cruise is the bulk of your time try to enjoy it!
  • I’d consider getting some skip the line tickets for the museums I was interested in.
  • I’d probably book in advance a trip on the canals .
  • I’d definitely get a guide book or check in advance what we should do and where we should eat – we weren’t really prepared and so just wandered round soaking up the city. We were lucky the day was dry!

The ultimate guide to the DFDS Amsterdam Mini Cruise

I’ve just got back from a weekend break to Amsterdam with DFDS on one of their mini cruises . I’m a firm believer in making the journey as much of the adventure as the destination, which is why I was so excited to go on the mini cruise from Newcastle to Amsterdam.

Setting sail at 5pm on a Friday from Newcastle, we sailed overnight and woke up with the sun rising over the port. After a 40-minute transfer to Amsterdam, we spent the day exploring the beautiful city before heading back to the boat and returning, waking up on Sunday morning in Newcastle.

If you’re wanting to make the most of your weekends, and have a little luxury weekend adventure, then this could be the trip for you!

Newcastle to Amsterdam mini cruise at a glance

There are two ships that sail the Newcastle/Amsterdam route: King Seaways and Princess Seaways. For our trip, we were on the Kings Seaways which has two restaurants, a bar, a nightclub/entertainment area, a coffee shop, a children’s play area, a casino, an arcade and duty-free shopping.

There is a whole host of room types including sea views, dog-friendly rooms, premium cabins; commodore and commodore de luxe.

Commodore De Luxe Cabins

The commodore de luxe cabins are the most premium cabins on board – and boy do they come with a lot of extras!

Found on deck 10, these cabins have their own floor and you are greeted by members of the crew who take you to your room.

I couldn’t believe how spacious the rooms are in the commodore de luxe cabins. We had a twin cabin, and there was plenty of space for the two of us. On entering the room, you step into the living room area which has a sofa, chairs and table and dressing table. Then you had the two beds, built into the wall, and it felt very nautical. The bathroom on board had a shower, sink and toilet and was huge compared to the standard rooms (which was very welcome when seasickness hit!). Oh, and let’s not forget the two huge windows which give you the perfect sea view.

Commodore De Luxe cabin | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

But Commodore De Luxe isn’t just about the gorgeous rooms…

You also have access to a private lounge where you can get drinks (soft drinks, wine, beer and prosecco), snacks, teas and coffees as well as a quiet place to sit and enjoy your journey. In the morning, you can also find pastries to keep you going before breakfast.

Speaking of breakfast, this is also included with commodore de luxe cabins. Rather than heading to Explorers Kitchen with the rest of the boat, everyone staying in the Commodore De Luxe cabins have their breakfast at the North Sea Bistro. There’s a whole range of hot food, pastries and cold meats and cheeses and it is delightful here, and a lot less hectic that the main Explorer’s Kitchen.

What to eat on DFDS Amsterdam mini cruise

There are two main places to eat on board the King Seaways boat for dinner and breakfast – North Sea Bistro and Explorers Kitchen.

North Sea Bistro vegetarian meal | DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The North Sea Bistro

The North Sea Bistro is the a la carte restaurant on board and is absolutely beautiful.

It’s a small menu, however a great range of options from steak to seabass to oysters. I actually opted for the vegetarian option, Pommes Anna, which is a medley of thinly sliced potato, zucchini, carrot, beetroot and sweet potato served with pickled red onion and a portobello cream sauce. I can honestly say this exceeded expectations and was full of flavour.

My friend went for the steak, which looked equally as delicious, which came with a peppercorn sauce and potato wedges.

For dessert we both opted for the chocolate fondant which was delicious, but I was so sad that the center wasn’t as gooey as I would like!

The buffet on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam

The Explorer’s Kitchen

The Explorer’s Kitchen is an all you can eat, around the world buffet. With a wide selection of foods from curries to salmon wellington to pizza – there truly is something for everyone here.

Sadly, when we ate here I was actually starting with sea sickness (it was a rough crossing coming back) so my appeitite was non exsistant at this point. However, I have actually done this sailing before, and usually eat at the buffet. From experince, it’s always a decent meal with lots of options.

The North Sea Bistro costs for 2 Courses is €38.95, and 3 Courses €42.95.

The Explorer’s Kitchen costs €25.95 for adults and you can be there for 1hr30.

Personally, I would choose the North Sea Bistro as it just felt a lot calmer and I really enjoyed my meal here.

Coffee Crew

As well as these two restaurants, there’s also a coffee shop on board which sells Starbucks Coffee and sweet treats.

There is something for everyone onboard the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterd am. We didn’t actually get round to everything we wanted to do on board either – plenty to do on my next trip for sure! Here’s a run down of what’s available;

Bars & Live Music

There are plenty of places to sit down with a drink (can definitely recommend the cocktails!), soak up the atmosphere and be entertained.

The Compass Club is where you can dance to your hearts content however it was the Navigator’s Pub where we found ourselves as there was live acoustic music, which everyone was singing along too, and it was such a good atmosphere here.

At the Compass Club, you can also play bingo at 9pm. Sadly we missed this, but I can imagine it would be a lot of fun!

Arcade & Casino

On board there is a casino area for adults, and an arcade for all ages, which also included an air hockey table.

Children’s Scavenger Hunt

At 7pm on board, a scavenger hunt around the boat takes place for children, and they all looked like they were having a lot of fun! There’s also a mini soft play on board for them as well.

Showing some of the latest films, there are two screens on board showing films throughout the whole evening (I think the last screening took place at 11pm).

It costs around £8 per person and is a really fun way to spend the evening, especially if you don’t want to sit in the bars.

Duty Free Shopping

Of course there is duty free on board, and I always find that DFDS has the best prices compared to other ferry operators. I actually did buy some perfume on board because the price was so good compared to back on land.

As well as your classic duty free offerings, there is also a small clothes store on board too so if you run out of clothes, don’t worry because they’ve got you covered!

amsterdam mini cruise dfds

How long do you have in Amsterdam on the DFDS ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam?

You dock in Holland at around 10am, and if you’re on the day mini cruise, I recommend queing early to get off, to make the most of your trip.

On this trip, we ended up in the very slow passport control queue, so we didn’t get into Amsterdam until just before 12pm. There are coaches back to the boat between 3pm and 4pm, and we headed to the coach around 3:45pm.

If you’re doing the mini cruise, the transfers between the boat and Amsterdam are included in the price. You can pay on the day as well.

Can you leave your belongings on board?

When you’re on one of the mini cruises, yes you can leave your belongings on board when you explore Amsterdam for the day. You have the same room on both journeys, so it’s essentially a floating hotel!

Overall thoughts on the DFDS mini cruise from Amsterdam to Newcastle

Overall, we had a great time on our mini cruise to Amsterdam.

I always think this is a great way to get a flavour for the city, and I’m sure you’ll want to return. If you’re wanting longer in Amsterdam, you can always book an extra night on land through DFDS to make this mini cruise into a whole holiday!

Even though seasickness hit (for the first time ever for me), I would defintely travel again. This was my 6th DFDS cruise to Amsterdam, and every time we have a great time. There is always a great level of service, and the boat is always clean and in good condition.

DFDS Mini Cruise: Newcastle to Amsterdam – The Explorer’s Kitchen

Living in the North East, we’re pretty privileged when we think about. From sports events and a thick sports culture to rolling countryside and blue-flag beaches. There’s a wealth of talent hailing from the region; Alan Shearer, Cheryl Fernandez-Whatevershescalledthesedays-Cole, Ant & Dec, Robson Green, Bobby Robson, the DFDS Mini Cruise Ferries to name a few.

Travel links are taken for granted, we have the Metro, we’ve electric-powered buses, we have a huge train station and most notably, and most under-appreciated is the gateway to Europe via boat. Port of Tyne is located in North Shields, beside the Tyne Tunnel which connects North Tyneside to South Tyneside.

The buffet is obviously buffet quality food and great value if you pre-book, especially if you’ve got an appetite! If you’re looking for fine dining then The North Sea Bistro is probably better suited for you. Prices are as follows;

2-COURSE À LA CARTE DINNER PRICES

#ferrygoodfood, ferry prices..

The next time I travel on the DFDS mini cruise to Amsterdam I do think that I’d probably dine at The North Sea Bistro over The Explorer’s Kitchen and that’s just based on my personal preference of having a plated meal over a buffet. I do, however, think that (if pre-booked) it’s good value for money especially if you intend on eating a lot and/or you are travelling with children.

I do, however, also think that the drinks prices are a little excessively priced, with a fresh orange juice costing €4. This is not just in The Explorer’s Kitchen, I also felt that the price of drinks was exceptionally high across the whole ship on my last trip to Amsterdam from Newcastle via the DFDS mini cruise ferry.

Have you been on the ferry? I’d love to know your thoughts below.

This is an advert for August 2022. Any edits / shares beyond this date have not been asked or paid for. Prices and information correct as of August 2022. Please check with DFDS for the most up to date information.   I feel like we're fairly lucky living where we do and having a port offering daily direct crossings to Amsterdam on our doorstep. I have travelled from Newcastle-Amsterdam with DFDS a fair few times over the years, both as part of a mini cruise and as part of our holiday to Duinrell & Efteling where we travelled with our own vehicle.

Experience Luxury at Every Turn on a Russia Cruise

Russia is a vast, breathtaking country known for resplendent cities like Moscow and St. Petersburg, where world-class art, unique architecture, and rich history await. Beyond its biggest cities, however, there are remote villages and fishing towns that thrive despite a menacing climate, making Russia home to a wilderness more beautiful than you could possibly imagine.

Once the capital of imperial Russia, today St. Petersburg is a creative hub full of art, culture, and cherished institutions just waiting to be explored on a Russia cruise. From breathtaking ballet and opera centers to ornate palaces and cathedrals, the City of Tsars still feels every bit the royal city it once was. Get to know another side of Russia in Petropavlovsk, a port town where 29 active volcanoes and the rugged Kamchatka Peninsula contrasts with its snow-capped mountains and inviting thermal hot springs.

With the safety of our guests and crew always our top priority, we are removing St. Petersburg, Russia from upcoming itineraries in 2022, due to the current situation in Ukraine. Our thoughts are with all who are impacted by this conflict.

Russia Cruise Highlights

Fascinating history.

Centuries of history mark every street and attraction of St. Petersburg. Marvel at the Church on Spilled Blood, a memorial to Alexander II known for its breathtaking mosaics, or explore centuries of imperial history with a visit to the Winter Palace. Board a high-speed train to Moscow and see the world-famous Kremlin and the Red Square. In Petropavlovsk, discover the history of Russia’s far east at the Military Glory Museum.

Local Cuisine

Explore the flavors of historic St. Petersburg on a journey to a local market under the expert guidance of our Celebrity Chef. Stroll through popular markets in the city, admire fresh local produce, artisanal cheese, caviar, natural honey, fresh fish, and choice meats. Sample some of the market’s delicious offerings before you source ingredients with your chef on board. In Petropavlovsk, sample traditional Russian delicacies like borsch, smoked fish, and baked Kamchatka salmon.

Arts & Culture

St. Petersburg is home to an astounding array of cultural attractions to explore. Visit one of the largest art museums in the world at the State Hermitage Museum, where you’ll see priceless works of art by Rembrandt, Picasso, Van Gogh, and more. Stroll the grounds of Peterhof Palace and witness one of the most impressive private collections of porcelain in the world. A night of Russian ballet at one of the city’s lavish theaters is a can’t-miss experience.

Featured Ports

St. petersburg.

Colorful, metropolitan St. Petersburg is one of Russia’s greatest cities, decorated with incredible palaces and grounds like the Winter Palace and the Peterhof. Called “The Venice of Russia,” St. Petersburg’s winding canals and cobblestone streets rival Europe’s greatest cities. Watch a once-in-a-lifetime Russian ballet at the Mariinsky Theatre, or take a high-speed train on a day trip to Moscow.

Petropavlovsk

Venture off the beaten path to the far east of Russia and enjoy a more rustic side of the country in Petropavlovsk. Thanks to its large population of hefty Kamchatka black bears, Petropavlovsk is a perfect getaway for animal enthusiasts hoping for bear sightings. Explore a traditional Kamchatka village, or get close to Siberian huskies at a local kennel. Fields of bubbling geysers, an active caldera called Lake Kurilskoye, and an entire museum dedicated to the area’s volcanic activity are reminders of East Russia’s powerful landscape.

Russia Cruise Itineraries

Cruises to Russia and Scandinavia depart from Amsterdam aboard Celebrity Reflection and Southampton aboard Celebrity Silhouette. Itineraries last from 12 to 14 nights and include an overnight in St. Petersburg, where you’ll have two days to explore the city. On a transpacific cruise from Tokyo to Vancouver, you’ll visit the fascinating port town of Petropavlovsk.

Itineraries

View all cruises to russia, why sail to russia with celebrity cruises.

On a luxury cruise to Russia with Celebrity Cruises, you’ll discover the captivating metropolis of St. Petersburg and the vibrant cities of Scandinavia, or the vastness of the Bering Sea and the picturesque town of Petropavlovsk. Spend luxurious days at sea enjoying the onboard spa, world-class restaurants, and thrilling live performances. During days in port, you’ll experience the striking architecture, culture, and signature cuisine of the region.
