Ko Phi Phi Travel Guide

Last Updated: August 30, 2023

A view of Ko Phi Phi, Thailand and its lush jungles and beaches as seen from a scenic lookover

Ko Phi Phi is one of the most popular tourist islands in Thailand. From beautiful Maya Bay (made famous by the Leonardo DiCaprio movie: The Beach ) to the monkeys on the aptly named “Monkey Beach” to the diving, nightlife, and resorts, Phi Phi is one of the biggest destinations in the country.

Destroyed by the tsunami in 2004, the island has been rebuilt and developed to an even greater extent than before. Unfortunately, Ko Phi Phi has suffered from overtourism in the worst way, with over 5,000 people visiting Maya Bay per day, polluting the area with countless speedboats and trash.

The Thai government closed the area for almost 4 years, and as it has only recently reopened to tourism, with many caveats in place.

Though I’ve had a lot of fun here, I don’t particularly like Ko Phi Phi . The main area of the island is very overdeveloped, overpriced, and the beaches are ruined. Most people come here only to party.

If you stay at the resorts on the north of the island, Phi Phi is beautiful, deserted, and a tropical paradise (but those places are expensive).

Then again, hundreds of thousands of people visit each year and love it. You’ll just have to decide for yourself.

If you do visit, this travel guide to Ko Phi Phi can help you plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your time here!

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Ko Phi Phi

1.Visit Maya Bay

Made famous from the movie The Beach , Maya Bay is beautiful. After closing the area in 2018 to allow the ecosystem to recover, Maya Bay just reopened in early 2022. Boats are no longer allowed in the bay and tourists can stay on the beach for one hour and cannot swim. Tours start from 1,500 THB.

2. Hike to Phi Phi Viewpoint

After the twenty-minute walk up to this viewpoint, you’ll be rewarded with an amazing panoramic view of the island. The viewpoint is over 182 meters (600 feet) high, with a lot of steep staircases and trails, so you’ll need to be reasonably fit to get there.

3. Go rock climbing

With the rugged landscape and steep cliffs, Ko Phi Phi is an ideal climbing destination. You can arrange a tour that takes you to one of the islands’ limestone rock faces that are suitable for climbing. Most places charge around 1,000-1,500 THB for a half-day trip.

4. Go diving or snorkeling

There are plenty of great diving sites around Ko Phi Phi, including at Hin Muang, which boasts the highest vertical wall in Thailand at 60 meters (197 feet). Leopard sharks, whale sharks, manta rays, and reef sharks patrol the depths, but the site’s crowning glory is a huge purple rock. Diving trips start from around 3,950-4,500 THB.

5. Visit Bamboo Island

This island is home to the coral garden Hin Klang. I highly recommend taking a day trip here, as it’s a beautiful, relaxing island with better beaches than Phi Phi. The entrance fee is 400 THB, but most of the tours include that, which are generally around 1,800 THB for a day trip.

Other Things to See and Do in Ko Phi Phi

1. enjoy the nightlife.

The nightlife here is wild. The go-to drink is a literal bucket of alcohol comprised of an energy drink, can of soda, and liquor — a potent mixture! Fire shows and Thai boxing matches are a regular occurrence at the beach bars, and bars not located on the beach often have pools or stunning rooftop decks. Many have no official closing hour, staying open until the last partiers call it quits. Nearly every night of the week there are massive beach parties. Just keep in mind that partying is not cheap here!

2. Dive the King Cruiser Wreck

One of the best dive sites near Ko Phi Phi is the King Cruiser wreck, where a passenger ship sunk in 1997 after hitting the Anemone Reef. This site is packed with fish including clownfish, tuna, lionfish, and barracuda, not to mention the sea anemones that cling to every surface of the reef. Keep an eye out for the occasional leopard shark or turtle. Due to the depth of the wreck at 30 meters (98 feet) below the surface, only experienced divers are allowed to dive this site. Two-dive packages generally cost around 4,000 THB.

3. Watch Muay Thai (Thai boxing)

The Reggae Bar offers Muay Thai shows nightly, where you can get big buckets of booze and watch the show. If you are in the mood, you can even get out in the ring yourself. Winners receive free buckets for their tables! Some local matches are scheduled, and if you are lucky, you’ll find some high-stakes fights featuring professional fighters.

4. Hang out on Monkey Beach

Monkey Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand. Powder white sands and excellent diving makes this a popular spot, but the coolest thing about it is the monkeys that come down to the beach. Beware that the monkeys are crafty and will steal anything that you leave unattended — even if you’re standing right there. And whatever you do, do not feed or try to pet the monkeys!

5. Go deep-sea fishing

One of the more expensive activities that you can do off the coast of Ko Phi Phi is deep sea fishing. Generally, you need to charter an entire boat, so get together with a few others to share the cost. A full-day charter costs around 10,000-16,000 THB, which includes lunch, guides, equipment, and live bait. You’ll get the chance to fish for tuna, barracuda, dorado, king mackerel, and sailfish, all of which can be cooked for you right on the boat or taken back to your accommodation. You can also go night fishing, which is a great way to experience the nocturnal life of the waters surrounding the islands.

6. Watch the sunset by kayak

You can rent sea kayaks or arrange a kayak tour from just about any beach on Ko Phi Phi. The island is great for kayaking, and nothing beats getting to see the sunset from the water. Sunset tours head out on ocean kayaks to Wang Long Bay. However, there are plenty of other tours available, so explore your options. Renting your own kayak generally costs 150-200 THB per hour, while half-day tours are around 900-1,100 THB.

7. Learn to cook traditional Thai food

If you are looking to learn Thai cooking, take a class at Pum Thai Cooking School. Located in Tonsai Village, you can take classes ranging from 30 minutes to 6 hours. Classes start at 300 THB for a 30-minute mini-class, but a 3-4-hour class, during which you’ll make several dishes, is 1,300-1,900 THB. Learning how to make these delicious meals is the best souvenir you can bring home with you!

8. Hop aboard a booze cruise

While there is nightlife aplenty on the island, if you want to get out on the water while enjoying some rum punch, there are many booze cruises offering just that. Captain Bob’s offers a fun way to see some of the most beautiful spots in the Phi Phi islands, with unlimited booze, lunch, snacks, snorkeling, and kayaks. After the trip, the party continues until 8:30pm, with more unlimited drinks, of course. It departs from Tonsai Bay at 1pm and costs 2,500 THB.

9. Stroll the Phi Phi market

If you want a glimpse at what life is like in Phi Phi, stop by the market. Located in Tonsai Village, you can expect to find a ton of local veggies, fruits, and seafood, at reasonable prices. Tourists don’t really frequent this market, so it’s a great way to experience local culture. It is open daily. Make sure you come hungry!

10. Swim with bioluminescent plankton

This unique marine plant glows blue in the dark, almost like fireflies of the water. You can see and swim with them by taking a nighttime boat tour or by diving at night. Guides take you to the best spots for seeing these creatures creating beautiful displays in the water. Boat tours start at 990 THB.

Ko Phi Phi Travel Costs

Longtail boats pulled up on the beach on the island of Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

Hostel prices – Ko Phi Phi is one of the most expensive islands in Thailand. Because it’s so small, there aren’t a ton of accommodation options to choose from and prices don’t fluctuate too much with the seasons.

A bed in a large dorm with 10 or more beds costs 300-350 THB per night, though you can find some for around 200 THB per night (but they’re in not-so-great hostels). Most dorm beds fall into the 400-600 THB range for a bed in an 8-10-bed dorm.

Private rooms for two people with an ensuite bathroom start at 750 THB. Most hostels include free Wi-Fi, free coffee and tea, and air-conditioning. Breakfast is usually not included.

Budget hotel prices – In the high season, two-star hotels start around 750 THB for a private double room with a fan. A nicer room costs from 1,000 THB for a double private room with air-conditioning, while an entire basic bungalow that sleeps two starts at 900-1,200 THB.

During the off-season, you can find private rooms for 600 THB and entire bungalows for as low as 600-800 THB.

Most hotels have free Wi-Fi, air conditioning, private bathrooms, and individual private balconies. Many have outdoor pools as well.

On Airbnb, you’ll mostly find entire villas and bungalows, which average 2,450 THB per night, though some basic ones are as low as 1,050 THB.

If you’re looking for a quiet place to sleep, do NOT book accommodation near the beach! Most hostel/hotel owners will warn you before you check in; the party rages on the beach until 1am (everything shuts down precisely at this time).

Average cost of food – Thai cuisine is spicy and contains layers of flavor, with an abundance of curries, salads, soups, and stir-fries. Thailand’s neighbors, including Malaysia, Laos, and Myanmar, have all left their mark on the country’s cuisine.

Thai cuisine uses many ingredients, with typical spices and fresh herbs including garlic, basil, galangal, cilantro, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, chilies, shrimp paste, and fish sauce. In central and southern Thailand, coconut milk is commonly used in curries and desserts. Being an island, there’s a lot of fish and seafood in the dishes on Ko Phi Phi.

Popular dishes include tom yum goong (hot and sour soup with shrimp), massaman curry, pad thai (a stir-fried noodle dish), som tam (spicy papaya salad), kao phad (fried rice), khao man gai (rice with boiled chicken), and satay (grilled meat on skewers, served with a peanut dipping sauce). Dessert is usually fruit or various dishes comprised of coconut milk or glutinous rice, with mango sticky rice being a popular dessert.

Compared to the rest of Thailand, food is expensive on Ko Phi Phi. You’ll find the cheapest food in Tonsai village.

The open-air local restaurants near the beach have dishes starting at 150-180 THB for local cuisine. One of my favorite places for fantastic Thai cuisine is Garlic 1992. The Beacha Club also has a lovely, no-frills cafe right on the beach (try the pineapple fried rice).

The Phi Phi food market in the center of town has rock-bottom prices for local seafood, fruits, and vegetables. A snack at one of the vendors here costs 10-20 THB. Go around to a few different ones and soon, you’ll have made a meal of it.

Another budget-friendly way to eat on Ko Phi Phi is by eating at the street stalls, where the food is not only cheap but delicious. A dish such as pad thai from these stands costs 60-100 THB.

Western food is quite a bit more expensive. You’re likely to pay around 185-250 THB for a mediocre pizza or burger, while pasta dishes are 220-380 THB.

When it comes to drinking, going to bars can become pricey. The cheapest beers cost about 60-80 THB each and cocktails cost triple that amount at 180 THB. You can save money here by buying beers from convenience stores where they are half that price.

If you plan to cook your own meals, a week’s worth of basic staples like rice, veggies, and some meat or fish costs around 1,100 THB.

Backpacking Ko Phi Phi Suggested Budgets

On a backpacking budget of 1,575 THB per day, you can stay in a hostel dorm, eat cheap street food and cook some meals, buy cheap beer from the convenience store, walk everywhere, and do mostly free activities like swimming and lounging on the beach.

On a mid-range budget of 3,700 THB per day, you can stay in a private room, splurge on one nice local meal and a few drinks per day (and then eat street food for your other meals), and do more paid activities like kayaking or diving.

On a “luxury” budget, expect to spend 5,200 THB or more per day. This covers a private bungalow away from the loud parties, all the nice meals you’d like, more drinks, hiring a boat to get around, and doing whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages – some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in THB.

Ko Phi Phi Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Ko Phi Phi is easily one of Thailand’s most expensive islands, especially if you’re here to party. That being said, you can still have a budget-friendly trip if you’re smart about it. Here are some ways to save money on Ko Phi Phi:

  • Go during the low season – You’ll miss peak season if you travel from May through October, which means you’ll avoid peak-season prices. Just plan for a bit of rain.
  • Buy beer at convenience stores – Beers and drinks are heavily discounted when purchased at convenience stores, costing half the price you’d pay at the bar. Purchase a few beers before you go out to the bars and cut your night’s budget by a lot.
  • Eat in Tonsai – Eat in Tonsai village rather than on the beach, as the beachfront restaurants tend to have higher prices for the same food.
  • Work for bars – Many bars give you free drinks if you spend a couple of hours handing out flyers for their venue during the afternoon.
  • Bargain hard – If hiring out a long-tail boat, be sure to bargain with the owner. Prices are always up for negotiation.
  • Group together to charter a longboat – If you’d like to see Ko Phi Phi Leh or other islands, get a group together and charter a long-tail boat. Split between four or more people, and it should be cheaper than an organized tour. If you’re traveling solo, ask around at your hostel.
  • Stay with a local – Couchsurfing connects you with locals who not only provide a free place to stay but who can introduce you to all the great places to see. It’s the best way to meet people and get insider tips.
  • Use a water bottle with a purifier – It isn’t safe to drink the tap water in Phi Phi, and although buying bottled water is cheap, it does add up — pick up a LifeStraw , which have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe (it’s good for the environment too!)

Where to Stay in Ko Phi Phi

Looking for accommodation in Ko Phi Phi? Here are some of my suggested places to stay:

  • Rock Backpacker (my favorite cheap place to stay, and a great place to make friends. You’ll have to book this one when you arrive)
  • JJ Bungalow
  • Voyagers Hostel
  • Rehab Hostel

How to Get Around Ko Phi Phi

Boats in the water in front of huge limestone formations in Maya Bay on the island of Ko Phi Phi, Thailand

You don’t have many options for getting around Ko Phi Phi, but as you’ll see, you don’t really need a lot of options. There are no cars or motorbikes on the island — just an occasional motorized vehicle to transport construction gear or garbage!

Walk – There are no taxis or buses on Ko Phi Phi, so you’ll be mostly walking everywhere! If you book your hostel/hotel in advance, someone will be at the pier to collect your baggage in a cart to bring it to your accommodations (sometimes included in the price of your bed/room, but not always).

When to Go to Ko Phi Phi

Peak season in Phi Phi is from November to April. If you travel between May and October, you’ll avoid peak season and save quite a bit of money (even though you might catch some rain). However, November to April offers cooler temperatures and nicer weather, with constant sunshine and clear skies.

November to February are the coolest months, with temperatures between 23-30°C (73-86°F). February is the driest month and is the best time to come if you’re simply wanting to soak up the sun on the beaches or enjoy some water sports.

The end of March to mid-May is the hottest time to be on Ko Phi Phi. It’s just before monsoon season hits, so humidity is high and temperatures soar into the 30s°C (90s°F). The crowds slacken during this time, however, so it’s quite a nice time to visit if you don’t mind the heat.

Monsoon season is from mid-May to October, with May, September, and October being the wettest months. The average daily temperature during this time is 28°C (84°F). If you don’t mind a bit of afternoon rain, prices are cheapest during this time and there are very few crowds.

How to Stay Safe in Ko Phi Phi

Ko Phi Phi is a safe place to backpack and travel, even if you’re traveling solo and even as a solo female traveler. I’ve rarely seen any problems here and I’ve been coming here for over ten years.

Petty theft (including bag snatching) is the most common type of crime in Ko Phi Phi so always keep your eye on your belongings, especially in popular tourist areas. Don’t leave any valuables unattended at the beach and when you go out partying only bring the cash you need.

Solo female travelers should feel safe here, though the standard precautions apply (never leave your drink unattended at the bar, never walk home alone intoxicated, etc.)

Scams here are rare but if you’re worried about getting ripped off, read this post on common travel scams to avoid .

This is a notorious party island so the biggest incidents happen when people are being drunk and stupid. Those buckets of booze can be lethal, and unfortunately, travelers do need to stay alert for predators slipping drugs into their drinks. Watch your drink at all times and avoid illegal substances at all costs — Thailand is very, very strict on drugs!

If you experience an emergency, dial 191 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. Ko Phi Phi Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Agoda – Other than Hostelworld, Agoda is the best hotel accommodation site for Asia.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!

Phi Phi Travel Guide 2024; Everything You Need To Know!

Ultimate phi phi travel guide for 2024.

Table of Contents

The Phi Phi Islands (pronounced “Pee-Pee”) are a collection of six islands off the coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Ko Phi Phi Don and Ko Phi Phi Leh are the two main islands, with Phi Phi Don being the only one that is inhabited. When the tsunami hit in 2004, Ko Phi Phi was substantially damaged, but it has since been restored.

The Phi Phi Islands are among Thailand’s most well-known islands, and with good reason. A South-East Asian natural marvel. The archipelago’s natural beauty is unlike any other. But why do people come to Koh Phi Phi? It’s simple: taking a Phi Phi Island Boat Tour is one of the most satisfying and enjoyable experiences in Thailand, aside from the peaceful ambiance and laid-back lifestyle.

Koh Phi Phi Don has a peculiar, almost skeleton form, adorned with spectacular limestone cliffs typical of Krabi province. The activity epicenter is a relatively thin strip of sand that links two asymmetrical parts of the island.

Blue water may be seen on both sides of the main walking trail at various spots. Although it’s great to physically check that you’re surrounded by the Andaman Sea, keep in mind that the thin link in the center is what caused Koh Phi Phi to be entirely destroyed by the devastating 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.

While Thai is the primary language spoken on the islands, many individuals, particularly those who work in hotels, restaurants, stores, and tourist attractions, know and understand English.

Thailand’s official currency is the baht. On the island, there are lots of ATMs, but carry some extra cash in case the network goes down. Visa and MasterCard are frequently accepted, although American Express is usually reserved for higher-end hotels and stores.

Phi Phi is one among the top ten diving locations in the world. It’s no surprise that it’s one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations. The islands are unquestionably stunning. However, being a major tourist destination, Phi Phi Don has become over-developed and a party scene. The Phi Phi Islands have become particularly popular with backpackers, however there are also some more upscale resorts.

Is it safe to visit Phi Phi Island?

Phi Phi Travel guide

An island where people enjoy life by relaxing at its beautiful beaches and swimming in its crystal clear waters. In addition to finding some beautiful natural sights, there are plenty of opportunities for swimming and snorkeling here.

Best time to visit Phi Phi Islands

The island of Phi Phi is open all year. The best time to go depends on the weather and your budget.

The peak season is from November through April, when prices are at their maximum. As a result, visiting outside of these months, between May and October, will save you money.

Weather in the Phi Phi Islands The monsoon season coincides with the off-peak season, with May, September, and October being the wettest months. However, the temperatures are still pleasant, and there is plenty of sunshine. Just keep an eye out for unexpected, heavy downpours.

The warmest months, with the most humidity, are March through mid-May. If you don’t like the high humidity, these are the months to avoid. However, if you enjoy hot weather, this is an excellent time to visit, as the temperature is pleasant.

The months of November through February are the coldest (but still warm enough for plenty of sun-bathing). The weather and temperatures are undoubtedly the best during these months, but they are also the most costly months to visit.

How can I get to Phi Phi?

The Phi Phi Islands may be reached in two ways: by speedboat or by ferry from Phuket or Krabi. Ferries from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands take around two hours, and 90 minutes from Krabi or Koh Lanta. Public ferries are a good value for money alternative, and it’s preferable to purchase tickets in advance to receive the cheapest price.

There are several ferry companies operating in the region, all of which have frequent departures. They come in a variety of sizes and can become pretty busy, so check before you go. It’s best to arrive around an hour ahead of time to get a decent seat.

Speedboats are a speedier – and perhaps more enjoyable – option. If possible, reserve a couple of days ahead of time to ensure a place. A private speedboat rental is a terrific alternative for big groups that want the most freedom.

Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

Klong Jirad Pier is Krabi’s principal ferry pier. It’s around a 30-minute drive from Krabi International Airport.

The ferry ride from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi takes roughly 1.5 hours. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the port or in advance online.

Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

The Rassada Pier is Phuket’s primary ferry pier. This is where you can book the Phuket to Phi Phi boat, which takes around 2 hours. Ferry tickets can be purchased at the port or in advance online.

Alternatively, you may hire a private speedboat. This will be more expensive, but it will be faster.

What can I do there?

Plan to walk, hire a kayak, or ride a bicycle, as motorized transit is scarce, and the few scooters on the island are utilized by police or construction workers. Long-tail boats are noisy and may be chartered for the day or for a single ride; fees vary depending on distance and time of day.

Phi Phi Islands nightlife

Phi Phi Don is well-known for its nightlife, which includes large beach parties and other forms of entertainment. It’s one of Thailand’s most costly spots to party, so keep that in mind while planning your trip.

Thailand’s drinks are powerful, and this is especially true on Ko Phi Phi. The iconic 2 for 1 booze buckets are well-known and sometimes deadly. Keep an eye on the strength of the beverages and, as always, pay attention to what you’re drinking. It goes without saying that you should avoid illicit narcotics in Thailand due to the country’s harsh drug regulations.

Ko Phi Phi Don

Phi Phi Don, the largest and only inhabited Phi Phi island, is where you’ll find all of the hotel options as well as the notorious nightlife. It is a lovely island, but it is severely overdeveloped. With so many people arriving every day, it is far from being the unspoilt paradise you may think it is.

Phi Phi viewpoint

Head to Phi Phi viewpoint for stunning views of the turquoise ocean, lush green vegetation, and towering cliffs. It’s a 30 minute stroll or 20 minute power walk, so it’s not a strenuous ascent. At the top, you’ll find a selection of cold drinks and a variety of food options.

Ko Phi Phi Leh

1.5 kilometers south of Phi Phi Don is Phi Phi Leh. It’s an uninhabited island with a variety of beautiful bays and caves. It’s a wonderfully stunning island to visit, with fantastic snorkeling possibilities to see unusual species and colorful coral.

Maya Bay, Sama Bay, Pi Leh Bay, Palong Bay, and Viking Cave are all popular tourist destinations. Swimming and snorkeling are great in Sama Bay and Pi Leh Bay. Palong Bay is a famous dive location where black-tip reef sharks may be seen. Swifts produce nests from their saliva, which are retrieved by locals, and Viking Cave is noted for its bird nests. To produce bird’s nest soup, they are sold for an exorbitantly expensive price. Although it may seem revolting, it is a Chinese delicacy!

Maya Bay near phi phi , part of Phi Phi Leh, is a lovely bay surrounded on three sides by 100-meter-high cliffs. It is a well-known site because it was the setting for Leonardo DiCaprio’s film The Beach. It consists of multiple little beaches (also see the best Phi Phi Island beaches ), and the crystal clear water provides for a clear view of the underlying coral. As a result, it is a popular snorkeling area.

Maya Bay, as lovely as it is – or was – isn’t all rainbows and flowers. Unfortunately, the vista is slightly spoiled by the large number of speedboats ferrying people to the bay due to its popularity. Maya Bay has been closed since June 2019 owing to damage caused by tourists as a result of the congestion.

Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island, also known as Koh Pai, is a small island located five kilometers northeast of Koh Phi Phi Don. It’s the epitome of a tropical paradise, and it’s a little calmer than Phi Phi Don and Maya Bay. It’s a favorite lunch stop for many Phi Phi Island trips.

The island is formed like a heart, with lush green foliage in the center and a strip of white sand beach around it. The island’s beautiful name comes from the bamboo plants that decorate it. Bamboo Island has the purest seas you’ve ever seen.

Provisions are limited, as they are on many of the smaller islands, although there is a tiny booth selling beverages and snacks. The island is also an excellent place to snorkel because of its crystal clear waters, which are home to spectacular coral reefs.

A long-tail boat is required to reach the island. A few hours is generally enough time to spend here because it is a small island with not much to see other than its outstanding natural beauty.

Monkey Beach

Monkey beach (see the Money Beach Phi Phi tour ) is a 150m-long stretch of beach backed by a towering limestone rock located 700m from Tonsai Bay. It has silky soft white sand and green waves that lap at the shore. Because of the thick greenery, it is a favorite monkey habitat, hence the name.

Monkey Beach is distinct from Monkey Bay, which is located on the opposite side of Phi Phi Don. Long-tail boats are the best way to get there, although kayaking is also an option. It’s best not to approach any wild creatures too closely. Due to visitors feeding them, they have been known to bite or scratch – and a rabies scare is the last thing you want!

Snorkelling and diving

Snorkeling is possible almost anyplace in the Phi Phi Islands. It’s a stunning snorkeling spot, with vibrant coral reefs and exotic species. There is a wide variety of aquatic creatures to observe. Just make sure you go with a guide because certain spots have challenging currents to maneuver.

In and around the Phi Phi Islands, diving is also highly popular. Speak with a tour company to learn about the greatest diving places. If you’re a beginning diver, there are several dive sites that are suitable for beginners. Further out, skilled divers will discover some deeper and more difficult dive locations. Bida Nok / Bida Nai, Malong May, Kled Gaeow Wreck, Hin Dot, and Hin Daeng / Muang are some of the top diving locations.

Rock climbing

Ko Phi Phi is a popular rock climbing destination in Thailand because of its tall limestone cliffs. It has world-famous rock climbing spots, as well as challenging climbing walls and well-trained instructors. Not to mention the breathtaking scenery all around you.

The following are the most significant rock climbing cliffs in the Phi Phi Islands:

  • Wall of Ao Ling
  • Bay of Maya (has two walls)
  • Wall of Ao Pilay
  • Wall of Drinking
  • Wall of Hua Ling

It’s a fantastic way to view all of the islands’ natural splendor. Renting a kayak allows you to visit isolated caves and gorgeous bays that are not accessible by foot. You can go on a self-guided tour for maximum freedom and an amazing experience.

Try a paddle boat or water-skiing excursion for an added excitement – it’ll give you a rush at a reasonable price.

Relax in a spa

Have you had your fill of adventure and are looking for a way to unwind? If lying on the beach all day isn’t your idea of relaxation, Phi Phi Don has a variety of spas. A spa day or wellness experience might help you relax and unwind. Relax with some exquisite spa treatments while taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Viking Cave

Enjoy boating in Koh Phi Phi Leh while exploring the magnificent green landscapes of Viking Cave. In this charming place, stroll along the magnificent beaches and shoreline.

Viking Cave is a large cavern on the island’s northeastern tip that receives its name from the murals found within, one of which depicts a boat that looks like a Viking ship. To get there, take a 30-minute long-tail boat journey from Ton Sai Bay.

Where can I stay?

Where to stay in phi phi island.

So, as it might be difficult to find a location to stay on Phi Phi Island , I’ll offer you a brief breakdown of where to stay. So, if you’re visiting Phi Phi Island during peak season, the first recommendation is to reserve your lodging ahead of time.

The second piece of advice is to have an open mind. In Phi Phi, I find it difficult to get everything you want in a hotel in one location, but let me explain why.

The majority of hotels and shops, as well as the main beaches (Nice Beach and Loh Dalum), are concentrated around Tonsai pier, making it much simpler to obtain lodging. Also, staying in the area and being able to walk to places rather than relying on taxi boats every time you want to leave your hotel and do something is more practical.

However, staying near a noisy bar and not being able to fall asleep before 2 a.m. is a distinct possibility. The majority of the hotels in this region are tiny and may not provide all of the resort amenities you may want, but there are a handful that do; you just need to do some homework.

The resorts on Koh Phi Phi are located in the north of the island, on isolated beaches, which is fantastic, but if you want to walk about the island, eat at a different restaurant, join one of the island’s boat tours, or go diving, you’ll need to hire a boat.

Is it possible to have a pool party on Phi Phi Island?

It’s Ibiza House Phi Phi ! They have shared and private rooms and are oceanfront, so don’t be put off by the loudness.

Are you looking for a hotel that is basic, peaceful, and conveniently located?

Panmanee Hotel will suffice if you want to keep yourself occupied on Phi Phi Island while still getting a nice night’s sleep after a long day.

For those looking to stay near Tonsai Pier, ChaoKoh Phi Phi Hotel & Resort is a lovely and tranquil alternative. Check out Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort, which is located in the north of the island, away from it all and on a gorgeous beach.

Phi Phi Island Travel Guide For Thailand

Koh Phi Phi island is a beautiful spot in Thailand with limestone hills, turquoise lagoons, and the world famous beach at Maya Bay.

There are two main islands — Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don — and both have amazing scenery. Leh island is completely uninhabited, while Don island has hotels, restaurants, and more.

It’s easy to visit the Phi Phi islands on a day trip (by boat) from Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak, or Koh Lanta, and that gives you enough time to see Maya Bay and the other main sights, or you can stay a few days on Phi Phi Don and do even more exploring.

This Phi Phi travel guide will explain how to get there from Phuket or Krabi (or elsewhere), which things to see and do, best tour packages to use, where to stay in PP island, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Phi Phi Island Thailand Day Tour Packages

First of all, if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the extra steps involved in arranging your own trip to Phi Phi island, GetYourGuide has prearranged day trips to Phi Phi from Phuket or similar day trips from Krabi or Khao Lak , complete with hotel transfers, boat tickets, island tour, lunch, and same day return.

These day tours visit all of the top sights in the Koh Phi Phi islands, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and Monkey Bay. They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that instead of a shared tour, although the prices are a bit higher unless you bring friends.

We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where Is Phi Phi Island?

The Phi Phi islands (pronounced ‘Pee-Pee’) are located in the Andaman Sea of Thailand, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) southeast of Phuket, and about the same distance from Krabi.

There are six islands in total, with the two main islands being Phi Phi Leh and Phi Phi Don, and they’re all considered part of the Krabi province of Thailand.

The only inhabited island is Phi Phi Don, which has hotels, restaurants, and everything else you might want for a short stay.

How To Get To Phi Phi Island

The only way to reach the Phi Phi islands is by boat from Phuket or Krabi, and you can use either a ferry or a speedboat to get there.

There’s no airport in Koh Phi Phi, so the closest place to fly is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to Phi Phi daily from either Phuket or Krabi, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. You can also do the day trip from Koh Lanta, or as far away as Khao Lak Thailand.

The slow ferry from Phuket to Phi Phi Don takes about 2 hours, while the fast ferry (speedboat) takes half as long. If you’re starting from Krabi instead of Phuket, the boat travel times to Phi Phi are about 30 minutes shorter.

Keep in mind these are just transfers to the main island of Phi Phi Don. Once you arrive, you’ll need to arrange a longtail boat trip if you want to go touring Phi Phi Leh and the rest of the islands. You can arrange this on the spot at Ton Sai Beach in Phi Phi Don, and it’s usually pretty easy.

The other option is booking a day tour to Phi Phi by speedboat with a Phuket or Krabi-based tour company. There are shared or private tours, and they visit most of the main sights in one full day. This can be a great option if you’re on a tight schedule or want to skip the hassle.

Visiting Phi Phi Island – Tourist Fees

There are two tourist fees you have to pay when you arrive in the Phi Phi islands.

At Phi Phi Don island, there’s a cash fee of 20 baht per person, which is paid when you first land at the harbor. They collect this from everyone, and it helps pay for daily rubbish removal from the islands. This fee is one time only (not a daily fee).

At the national park areas, there’s a cash fee of 200 baht per person (~$6 USD), which is collected when you disembark at either Maya Bay or Bamboo Island (Koh Phai). This fee is charged every day you visit either of these two locations.

Some Phi Phi tours may already include these fees in the price, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you get off the boat.

Transport: How To Get Around The Phi Phi Islands

There are no cars or motorbike rentals in the Phi Phi islands, and they’re not needed at all — if you’re staying on Phi Phi Don island, the whole town is small enough to be easily walkable on foot. Bicycles can also be rented.

You can hire a longtail boat in Phi Phi Don to take you to nearby islands like Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island. This can be booked online or else you can charter it in person at the Tonsai harbor after you arrive on Phi Phi Don.

The longtails are smaller boats, but they have room for up to 8 passengers, so you can share a boat with friends or other travelers to make it more cost effective.

Another option is kayaking at Ko Phi Phi Don. This is cheaper than a boat rental, and you can use kayaks to reach some of the hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don, like Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.

Best Things To Do In Phi Phi Island Thailand

The white sand beach at Maya Bay is one of the most famous and photogenic places in Thailand, and it was the main thing responsible for bringing tourism to the Koh Phi Phi islands. In fact, it’s now one of the most famous beaches in the world!

The entire beach is surrounded by tall limestone cliffs. The water is clear turquoise with baby sharks swimming around, and the sand is white as snow. Everything about it looks perfect. Yep, this is paradise!

Of course, the beauty of Maya Bay has attracted the tourist hordes, just like any of the amazing places in the world, but if you time your visit right you can still enjoy the beach without too many people.

Phi Phi Island Thailand Travel Guide Koh Phi Phi Islands Phuket Krabi Maya Bay Beach

Maya Bay — one of the highlights of Phi Phi Island Thailand

Maya Bay is located on Phi Phi Leh island, where it’s accessed by landing a boat at Loh Samay Bay (on the back side of the island), and then doing a short and easy shaded walk through the jungle to get to the beach. The walk is flat and takes about 5 minutes.

In the past, boats could go inside of Maya Bay and land directly on the beach, but they don’t do that anymore. The Thai government has spent the last several years working on conservation, so the only way to get to the beach now is to walk to it from the back side of the island.

I think this change was a good idea because it keeps the bay clear of boats, although I do miss those perfect postcard photos of Thai longtail boats sitting on the beach at Maya Bay.

Maya Bay Drone

Maya Bay from above

Another thing you should know is that Maya Bay is frequently closed for conservation at least a couple months every year during the rainy season.

In 2022 and 2023, Maya Bay was closed to tourists for 2 months (August and September) during the low season, but it re-opened for business on October 1, 2023. The bay is now open for visitors again in 2024!

Welcome Maya Bay Sign

Welcome to Maya Bay! This is the sign that greets you.

Maya Bay has a small shop with snacks and drinks, and there are restrooms by the path when you first disembark at Loh Sama Bay.

The main beach is about 250 meters long, and the end of the beach has a shallow cave that’s nice for photos.

If you want to escape the crowds, there are usually less people at the far end of the beach.

Phi Phi Island Thailand Travel Guide Koh Phi Phi Islands Phuket Krabi Maya Bay Cave

The shallow cave at Maya Bay

Most Koh Phi Phi tour packages give you 1 hour at Maya Bay, which is plenty of time to explore the beach, take pictures from every angle, and dip your feet in the water (swimming isn’t allowed at Maya Bay anymore).

I have to say the beach has been kept very clean, and we didn’t notice hardly any trash, even though as many as 5,000 tourists come to this beach sometimes in a single day! The park rangers have done a good job with cleanup.

Overall, Maya Bay is an amazing experience, and it’s one of our favorite beaches in the world!

• Pileh Lagoon

This surreal turquoise lagoon surrounded by giant rock walls is one of the best things to see on Phi Phi island in Thailand.

The lagoon is only accessible by boat. Most Koh Phi Phi tours include a stop here, and the smaller boats can float into the lagoon and circle it, giving you up-close views of the impressive limestone karsts.

It’s just as amazing as it looks in photos, and we may have enjoyed this spot even more than Maya Bay!

• Phi Phi Viewpoint

The Phi Phi viewpoint is a short hike on the island of Phi Phi Don, with epic views of the town and most of the island, and Phi Phi Leh visible in the distance.

There are actually three different viewpoints at various levels on the hill, but viewpoints #2 and #3 are the ones you really want to see because they’re higher and have the best views of the island without being blocked by any trees.

Phi Phi Island Thailand Travel Guide Koh Phi Phi Islands Phuket Krabi Viewpoint

Epic views of Phi Phi island from viewpoint #2

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 has broad panoramic views of the island and the entire town, with a nice wooden platform and some flat rocks where you can take photos. This was probably our favorite spot.

Viewpoint #3 has even higher views because it’s located at the top of the hill and you’re basically sitting in a tree house, with picnic tables and a hammock.

It’s very quiet and I’m sure it would be a great spot for sunset.

Cat Phi Phi Viewpoint

Phi Phi viewpoint #2 can be reached in about 20 minutes of uphill walking (mostly on stairs) if you start from the town center of Phi Phi Don island, and then it’s another 10-15 minutes to walk from there to viewpoint #3.

There’s a small fee to get into viewpoints #1 and #2, and then another small fee if you go to viewpoint #3. In total, we paid 50 baht per person (~$1.50). All of the viewpoints are very worthwhile!

• Bamboo Island (Koh Phai)

This is a small flat island located northeast of Phi Phi Don, with less people and a nice sandy beach covering most of the island.

Lots of Phi Phi island tours include this place in the itinerary, but it never feels too crowded, and if you walk around the side of the island for awhile you may have it all to yourself.

Just like Maya Bay, Bamboo Island is considered part of the Koh Phi Phi national park, so you have to pay the park entrance fee to land on the island and walk around the beach.

The center of the island has some trees, including the bamboo shoots that give the island its name, so you can escape the sun for awhile when you’re not in the water.

Overall, Bamboo Island is a great place to swim and soak up sun without the crowds of Maya Bay!

• Monkey Bay

This is a fun little beach where you can see wild monkeys on Phi Phi Don island. There are dozens of monkeys (long-tailed macaques) living on the beach, and you can usually see baby monkeys too.

The monkeys are fun for pictures, but they can be aggressive if they’re provoked, so don’t try to tease them or take their food. They’ve also been known to steal people’s glasses and other small items, so keep a close eye on them!

It’s best to go to this beach at low tide, when more monkeys come down to the beach. At high tide, the beach is mostly underwater and the monkeys retreat to the rocks, where they can’t be seen as well.

Monkey Bay Beach

• Monkey Beach

Not to be confused with Monkey Bay, this is a different spot on the other side of Phi Phi Don island. This one also has monkeys, but they’re not seen as often, and it’s a bigger beach with more room to walk around.

The main reason to come to Monkey Beach is for the stunning scenery. It’s a really nice beach with soft sand and a backdrop of jungle covered limestone mountains.

This is one of the most beautiful spots in Koh Phi Phi Thailand, and you can reach it by boat or kayak from Loh Dalum Beach. Just remember to keep an eye on the monkeys, because they can be sneaky.

Monkey Beach Drone

This is a small hidden bay on Phi Phi Don island with a nice beach and towering limestone rocks.

It’s possible to reach Nui Bay by sea or by land. From Loh Dalum Beach, you can rent a kayak or a boat to go there, which is how people usually get there. Kayaking to the bay will take about 45 minutes with a leisurely pace.

Otherwise, it’s also possible to reach Nui Bay by hiking from the Phi Phi viewpoint. It takes about 1 hour, and you’ll want to bring plenty of water and mosquito spray just in case.

If you get to Nui Bay in the morning (around 8 AM), it’s quiet and you may have it all to yourself for awhile until the tour boats start arriving later in the morning!

Best Beaches In Phi Phi Thailand

There are a lot of beaches in the Phi Phi islands, but obviously the hands down winner for scenery is the one at Maya Bay.

Some other beaches with great sand and swimming are the ones at Bamboo Island, Monkey Beach, and Nui Bay. You can watch the sunset at Long Beach .

If you want a quiet beach with nearby hotels on Phi Phi Don, some great options are Long Beach , Loh Moo Dee Beach , and Loh Ba Kao Bay . All of these have nice white sand and hotels near the beach. The best one for sunsets is Long Beach.

What To Bring

Here are some packing suggestions for your trip to Koh Phi Phi Island Thailand.

Most of the items below can probably be found on Phi Phi Don in a pinch, but the quality of stuff you buy on the street won’t be guaranteed (personally, I’m not about to use a junky knockoff bag from a street vendor to protect my expensive camera gear).

It’s best to buy vetted products online!

  • Waterproof Bag: Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around PP island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch: Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Snorkeling Gear: Good for exploring the clear waters around Koh Phi Phi island. Snorkels and masks can be borrowed or rented from the boat companies too, but if you plan to stay on the island or do multiple tours then it’s better to bring your own gear.
  • Water Shoes: These can come in handy sometimes while snorkeling in case you need to walk on rocks to get out of the water.
  • Sunscreen: There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
  • Snacks & Drinks: You’ll want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi, or there are plenty of cheap snack and drink stands in Ko Phi Phi Don near the port.

Can You Fly A Drone At The Phi Phi Islands?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but they don’t allow you to fly them in the national parks.

That includes Ko Phi Phi Leh and Bamboo Island, which are patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict at Maya Bay, and the rangers there are watching all areas of the beach constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations. For example, you can park your boat at Pileh Lagoon or Viking Cave and launch the drone from there, and usually no one is likely to notice or care unless a park ranger boat happens to drive by and see you do it.

The drone restrictions don’t apply to Phi Phi Don island at all. You can fly drones anywhere on Phi Phi Don without a problem, although you’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phi Phi Island Thailand

  • Credit Cards: Some places accept cards, but many do not. Most restaurants are cash only, although a few higher end restaurants accept cards. Use your card for big things like hotels and tours, and save your cash for smaller things like the amazing Thai street food.
  • ATM: On Phi Phi Don island, there are ATMs all over town. We used Krungsri in several locations and never had any issues. The pull fee was like 220 baht and they let you withdraw large amounts of cash at a time.
  • Cell Service: Phone reception is strong on Phi Phi Don, but you may lose signal while touring around Phi Phi Leh island (including Maya Bay) because of the steep mountains that cover the island.
  • WiFi: The internet situation is improving, and a fair number of hotels and restaurants in Phi Phi Don have good WiFi now. The internet quality is not as good as Phuket, but it’s generally good enough for emails, browsing, and streaming.
  • Electricity: The power is almost always on. During the rainy season we lost power a few times after storms, but it came back quickly.

  • Convenience Stores: There are plenty of small mini marts on Phi Phi Don where you can buy cheap snacks, drinks, toiletries, sunscreen, and other such things. Just remember their selection is smaller than what you’ll find shopping in Phuket.
  • Hygiene: We ate tons of the cheapest Thai street food and never had any stomach issues, but remember not to drink the tap water. Only use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.
  • Language: Just like in Phuket, the locals in the Koh Phi Phi islands don’t speak a lot of English, but it’s easy enough to communicate about hotels, restaurants, tours, etc.
  • Religion: Most of the locals in Phi Phi Don are Muslim (more than 80 percent). One of the funny side effects of this is that there are lots of cats on the island, but no dogs. We enjoyed the cats. There’s only one mosque on Phi Phi island, and it’s not noisy, so you won’t be kept awake at night.
  • Mosquitoes: We didn’t see any mosquitoes in the Ko Phi Phi islands except for a few at Monkey Bay. There have been some cases of Dengue Fever here, but it’s not really something to stress about. You can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or Phi Phi Don if you need it. Malaria isn’t present here.

Best Restaurants In Phi Phi Don

Even though Phi Phi Don is a small island, there are lots of great restaurants to choose from, with different kinds of cuisine including Thai, European, and Asian food.

Here are just a few of our top restaurant recommendations:

  • ACQUA : This is probably the single nicest restaurant in Phi Phi Don, although it’s a little on the pricey side. They have a good range of Thai and European dishes, with indoor and outdoor seating.
  • Mango Garden : This air-conditioned cafe is one of the first places we ate in Phi Phi island. They have a whole menu dedicated to mango sticky rice. Great for breakfast or a snack while waiting for the ferry! They also have free WiFi and plenty of power outlets.
  • JaJa Cafe & Spice : Awesome pancakes and acai fruit smoothie bowls!
  • Anna’s Restaurant : European and Thai food in PP island with a good selection and reasonable prices. Try the pineapple fried rice.
  • 23° Roasters Cafe : A relatively new cafe with great cakes and pastries. Indoor seating and super fast WiFi.
  • Papaya Restaurant : Indian and Thai food outside of the main street on PP island.
  • Garlic 1992 : Good Thai food in a humble setting. As you can tell by the name, they’ve been in business since 1992.

Phi Phi island has lots of great restaurants now (© ACQUA)

Again, this is far from a complete list of every good restaurant in Phi Phi Don island. With a bit of exploring, you’re sure to find some other gems.

Don’t forget about the yum Thai street food stalls and small family owned restaurants, such as Only Noodles . These places are super cheap and the food is usually amazing. In fact, we ate at these places for almost all of our meals in Phi Phi island!

Last, but not least, if you’re craving western food then there’s even a McDonald’s and Burger King when you first step off the boat at Ton Sai beach.

Is Koh Phi Phi Safe?

Yes, Phi Phi island in Thailand is generally a very safe place to stay.

We’ve spent weeks staying in Phi Phi Don and exploring the whole town, and never felt unsafe. Just take normal precautions and you shouldn’t have any issues with crime.

If anything, we actually found the locals more friendly in Phi Phi than in Phuket or Krabi.

Best Time To Visit Phi Phi

The best time to visit the Phi Phi islands in Thailand depends on what you’re looking for.

The weather in the Andaman Sea of Thailand (including Phi Phi) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny, and the sea conditions are better for boat tours. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s more crowded and hotels in Phi Phi Don are more likely to be fully booked.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip if your time is a bit more flexible.

If you visit Phi Phi in the rainy season, it’s good to have a few extra days to spare in case there’s some junky weather leading to the boats being canceled for a day or two.

Are The Phi Phi Islands Worth It?

Yes, the Phi Phi islands are absolutely worth a visit! The scenery is amazing and the prices for everything are very affordable.

I’d say it’s the single best place to go in Thailand, and also one of the best places in Southeast Asia. Sure, the crowds are annoying, but sights like Maya Bay and Pileh Lagoon have very few equals on Earth.

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island ? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island , but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (south vs north), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

How Long To Stay

You can see the highlights of the Koh Phi Phi islands in one full day tour, including Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Bamboo Island, and more. This is true even if you’re starting from Phuket or Krabi, as opposed to staying on Phi Phi Don.

However, staying a few days in the Phi Phi islands will give you more time to enjoy the scenery and see some extra things like the Phi Phi viewpoint, or the many hidden beaches on Phi Phi Don. It also gives you a buffer in case of junky weather.

We really enjoyed all of our days spent in Koh Phi Phi, and if you have enough time to spare then I think staying a few days is better than doing a one day trip from Phuket or Krabi.

3-Day Itinerary For Phi Phi Island Thailand

Here’s what a sample itinerary for the Phi Phi islands could look like, assuming you spend 3 days staying on Phi Phi Don and touring all of the islands:

  • Day 1: Phi Phi Don . Arrive in the Phi Phi islands from Phuket or Krabi. Check in to your hotel and unpack your things. Hike to the Phi Phi viewpoint and enjoy the scenery for awhile, and then head over to Loh Dalum Beach, where you can take a boat or kayak to Nui Bay and Monkey Beach.
  • Day 2: Phi Phi Leh . Take a longtail boat over to Phi Phi Leh island. Tour the famous beach at Maya Bay, and then go see Pileh Lagoon and Viking Cave. If you have time, stop and visit Monkey Bay on your way back to town.
  • Day 3: Misc . Take a boat to Bamboo Island and spend a couple hours swimming and soaking up sun. Head back to Phi Phi Don and explore the town and miscellaneous beaches before going back to Phuket or Krabi.

I hope this sample itinerary gives you some ideas for your own trip to Phi Phi island! As always, feel free to ask any questions if you have them.

Hi there, Just wondering which area in Phuket is closest to stay to catch a private transfer to Phi Phi Islands and has luxury hotels or houses to stay fir a week with family.

' src=

Hi there. It depends what you’re hoping to do in the Phi Phi islands. If you’re mainly wanting a private boat trip where you can avoid the worst crowds at Maya Bay etc, I would actually recommend staying a couple nights in Phi Phi Don if possible, and then hiring a boat from there. It’s easy to charter a boat in Phi Phi, and this will allow you to get an early start for sightseeing all around the islands before the crowds of day trippers come from Phuket. Phi Phi has luxury hotels too like Saii and Zeavola Resort . Otherwise, if you’re just wanting to do a day trip to Phi Phi and a convenient area to stay in Phuket nearby, then anywhere in south Phuket would work for that. Two good options in the southern part of the island are Sinae Phuket or Royal Phuket City Hotel .

Great private trip

Really enjoyed our 4 hour private tour with snorkelling from the phi phi island, picked up and collected from our hotel in a private taxi. Will definitely to be going on this trip again when we return to Phuket in November. Thanks

Owner wrote back to my previous review, he didnt even care about my feedback, did not even attempt to make things right, and felt like a slap on my face. I have a feeling other reviews are fake. Sadly, I wasted my time on this tour. They give false info on the tour! Avoid !!!

Lovely boat trip to Phi Phi and over…

Lovely boat trip to Phi Phi and over night - we took the 43ft Shashani Catamaran. It was a great boat with a water slide and other activities. The staff on the boat were amazing and made the trip even better. My only reason giving 4*s is because just when we were about to book, the tour service told us we had to pay an extra 30,000 baht ($800) because we were travelling to Phi Phi which is strange when the name of the company is literally Phi Phi Tours. We still paid it and went because it was last minute and we just wanted to get it booked.

Amazing! Kim was very helpful

I had a fantastic experience with this catamaran company on my Phi Phi Island tour. Kim was incredibly helpful and patient with communication, making the booking process a breeze. The tour itself was wonderful, with friendly staff and delicious food. Highly recommend!

Booked speedboat tour of Phi Phi island. Had a fantastic day and would recommend this company to anyone looking for a day planned and organised to suit their needs. Simple to organise and they were very attentive to make sure we had everything needed during the trip. Would use them again if back in Phuket.

Wonderful Phi Phi Islands private speedboat trip - highly recommended!

We had the most amazing trip today. We decided to pay a little bit more to go via private speedboat (<50% more than the group excursion) and it was worth every extra baht. Our driver arrived perfectly on time at 7am at our hotel and we got home nearly 12 hours later, having had a full 9.5 hours on the boat. Compared with some of the bigger tours we were able to spend as long as we wanted at each venue rather than having to clock watch all the time, which we could see other groups having to do. Every aspect of the trip ran smoothly and as advertised. Our crew were incredibly attentive and showed us the best place at Phi Phi Don for Pad Thai, which was incredibly cheap for such a tourist trap (it’s the left hand side of the bay outside Nice Beach Hotel). Would highly recommend going to Phi Phi for anyone, but upgrading to the private speedboat will make a memorable trip into an unforgettable one! Next time we’re in Phuket, we’ll be back! Thank you Phi Phi Tours! 🙏

Booked the premium private longtail boat tour from phuket to phi phi. Well organised trip and very quick responses on any queries. Would recommend booking with them!

The best trips only trough this company ! No complaint. I genuinely think that this company is best in Phuket . Exactly on time . Responsive ,helpful and the staff speak proper English which is not always sure thing in Thailand . Absolutely love it . Our second trip to phi phi was dreamy again .

Well organised and good value for money

What a fantastic trip with Phi Phi tours, everything ran smoothly and we got to see some of the fantastic sights of Thailand without being cramped on a boat with loads of people. Cannot thank them enough! 👌

53ft yacht experience

I paid for their 53ft yacht with a group of friends, mix of older and young people. We went to James Bond island, along with a couple other destinations. It was an amazing experience, the crew (of 5 including captain) were friendly, helpful, and overall a joy to be around. Service was excellent. We were spoon fed all the information we needed, all the equipment was provided, everything was well planned so all our group had to do was focus on having fun and enjoying ourselves. All equipment provided was new, up to date, no safety issues. I cut my finger and was immediately provided first-aid assistance. Lunch was delicious. I don't know what else to say, we had a lot of fun.

Don’t hesitate, BOOK NOW! #noregrets

Our captain Tuk was amazing! He was friendly and helpful throughout our tour. We had such good weather and saw some of the most breathtaking views in Phi Phi. We were able to customize our itinerary without issue, which we loved the most about our day. We were on our own watch, and had no one rushing us at each of the locations. I would definitely recommend this company to whoever is looking to have an unforgettable experience in Phi Phi!

I wish I could give 0 stars

I wish I could give 0 stars. Absolutely awful and such a ripoff. Paid over 11,000 baht for a private longboat tour for two when you can get a private boat on the island for 2,000 baht. The speedboat was late (by 20 minutes which isn’t the fault of this company) but when we arrived for the longboat to pick us up, they were an additional 30 minutes late. The “lunch provided” was put in a cooler with very little ice as the boat captain was actively throwing out rotted food (and the cooler still smelled of rotted food). We didn’t eat. The captain was also very unfriendly and smoking all during the day, which for us is a big deal due to our workplace drug testing. Overall, save your money and disappointment.

Date of experience : February 27, 2023

Wow! To be honest this definitely does NOT sound like it was one of our tours. Would you be so kind as to email/whatsapp us to discuss this situation? Maybe you've been scammed by someone claiming to be us 🤷‍♂️

First class, do not hesitate to book

Booked the 53FT INDIGO POWER CATAMARAN TOUR for a group of 17 to Phi Phi. Everything was amazing, boat was exactly as photos looked, transfers were bang on time, crew were superb, food was first class, recommend adding the BBQ option as well. Then the experience of Phi Phi was amazing. Would recommend to anyone!

Date of experience : March 17, 2023

Definitely a great experience

Definitely a great experience. The capitan was very friendly and helpful and did tell us where to go snorkelling in clear and not too busy places. Since snorkelling was what we were looking for it has been fantastic. The overall organisation was perfect and did not have any problem with hotel pick up and return as well as with the public speedy boat transfer to Phi Phi.

Date of experience : April 30, 2023

great experience

We had a great experience! From the start to the end of our private Koh Phi Phi boat tour it was perfect. Our driver was waiting outside early for us, showed us where to pick up the ferry tickets, and our longtail boat driver had a sign with our names. We had a wonderful day and highly recommend this company.

Excellent tour- the captain knows the area really well. Took us to some of the best snorkelling spots. Allowed us to enjoy private time as a couple. Go for it. Trustworthy and reliable. Points to improve- maybe the lunch can be a bit more elaborate but the fruit platter was excellent. Also you can't overeat in the sea anyway :)

Phi Phi in Thailand is made up of six different islands: Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Biddah Nok, Biddah Nai, Yung, and Pai.

Tip! For most trips, the 400 baht per person national park fee is not included in the price.

FAQs About Phuket to Phi Phi Tours

Phi Phi tours range from $50 to $150 for a shared boat, while private boats can cost around $1000 for 15 people. But this is just an average.

To reach Phi Phi from Phuket , you can take a ferry or speedboat. Ferries are more affordable but slower, taking about 2 hours. Speedboats are faster, taking around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Both options are readily available and can be booked through a operator or at the pier yourself.

While a day trip to Phi Phi Island can give you a taste of its beauty and attractions, I recommend spending at least an overnight if you have the time. If you have only one day, visit popular spots like Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, and the Viewpoint.

Yes, a Phuket to Phi Phi day trip is definitely worth it. It’s known for its limestone cliffs, crystal clear water, coral reefs, and vibrant marine life. You can go snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, and exploring iconic locations like Maya Bay.

Phi Phi can be a bit pricey compared to other spots in Thailand, especially for places to stay and things to do. But there are choices for every budget, so you’ll find both fancy and affordable options.

The best time to visit Phi Phi Island is during the dry season, from November to April. The weather is usually sunny with minimal rainfall, perfect for beach activities and exploring. However, this is peak season, so expect bigger crowds and higher prices. For a quieter but wetter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to October.

Phuket is a tourist hub of activities and vibrant nightlife. It’s a place with endless options. In contrast, Phi Phi is smaller and more relaxed, known for its natural beauty. If you want more of a city vibe, choose Phuket. For a serene getaway, Phi Phi is perfect.

Swimming in the archipelago is generally considered safe, but be aware of the tides and currents, especially during certain seasons when the sea conditions can change. Swim in designated swimming areas and avoid areas with strong waves or dangerous rocks.

Final Thoughts: Best Phi Phi Island Tour

Phi Phi and the whole area around Phuket (like Krabi & Railay Beach, Khao Lak, Khao Sok National Park, and smaller islands like Koh Phayam ) are seriously amazing spots in Southeast Asia .

With towering karst cliffs and clear turquoise waters, these places are a must-visit on any Thailand itinerary. Aside from Phi Phi Don, you’ll need to join a tour to explore the other destinations.

In case you’re still not sure which to pick:

Kde jinde v Thajsku můžete šnorchlovat s útesovými žraloky a plavat v azurových vodách jedné z nejkrásnějších lagun v Asii?
