UNTAPPED POTENTIAL

Kisumu county to promote tourism in western kenya circuit, continuous engagement of tourism activities will help kick start economic recovery.

• Deputy governor Mathew Owili says the circuit has now woken up, adding that they are now giving the Coast and Maasai Mara a run for their money.

• Owili said the Covid-19 pandemic has had a massive social and economic impact on the economy and specifically in the tourism industry.

Kisumu deputy governor Mathew Owili at Ndere Island in Seme subcounty during the United Nations World Tourism day.

Kisumu Deputy Governor Mathew Owili has said the county is committed to promoting tourism in the Western Kenya circuit.

Owili said tourism potential in the region has not lived up to their expectations in the past, hence the need for heightened promotion.

He said the circuit has now woken up, adding that they are now giving the Coast and Maasai Mara a run for their money.

"We have a full department of tourism run by a very able executive committee member with wide connections in the tourism sector across East Africa and beyond," he said.

Owili spoke on Ndere Island in Seme during United Nations World Tourism day on Monday. He said they have many tourist attraction sites, citing the Kisumu International Airport, which now plays host to many airlines.

He said it is an indication that many people have discovered the beautiful lakeside town. The deputy county chief said six airlines fly to Kisumu from Nairobi, with some making direct flights to Mombasa.

"To this end, we salute Kenya Airways, Jambo jet, Safari link, Renegade Air and Air Kenya for choosing Kisumu," Owili said.

He said the county government continues to work closely with its partners in the industry because they have seen and felt what partnerships can achieve.

The deputy governor said the Covid-19 pandemic has had a massive social and economic impact on the economy and specifically in the tourism industry.

He observed that both developed and developing economies have been hit. However, marginalised and vulnerable groups have been hit hardest.

Owili said continuous engagement of tourism activities will help kick-start the recovery and desire for inclusive growth.

He pointed out that it is essential to the tourism fraternity that the benefits this will spark be enjoyed widely and fairly across the board.

He added that the event is a global day for fostering awareness of tourism’s social, cultural, political and economic value while scrutinising the contribution that the tourism sector will make towards reaching the Sustainable Development Goals.

The tourism sector is a recognised pillar of most of the Sustainable Development Goals particularly goal number one (no poverty), five (gender equality), eight (decent work and economic growth) and 10 (reduce inequalities).

The deputy governor said Kisumu stakeholders in the tourism industry can collaborate with regional governments in contributing their expertise and perspective to a tourism-related initiative.

He said such forums include the United Nations World Tourism Day.

"It is during occasions such as this when stakeholders and partners strike conversations on meaningful collaborations that yield the best outcomes for this Industry," he said.

He disclosed that they have in the past organised stakeholders’ meetings in partnership with Tourism Fund and Kenya Tourism Board to train the stakeholders.

Owili said they have also been marketing Tourism products in partnership with Magical Kenya and other collaborators.

He divulged that they have improved the infrastructure and efforts are in place to continue making the attraction sites more suitable for tourists.

The deputy governor said they include Hippo point, the equator at Maseno and Kit Mikayi.

He said Kisumu has very big events lined up in the coming months.

He added that in December, the county will host the Kisumu International Investment Conference targeting both local and international investors.

Owili said the county will host the Africities Summit in May next year, making them the first intermediary city to host such a big event in Africa.

He urged stakeholders to help them to continue marketing Kisumu as the ultimate tourism hub in this region. Owili appealed to everyone to be the county's goodwill ambassadors.

Kisumu City Undergoes Major Transformation to Boost Tourism and Investment

tourism news in kisumu

Kisumu, Kenya – Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o’s administration has embarked on an ambitious project to transform Kisumu into a prime destination for investors and tourists. The initiative aims to revitalize the city’s image by implementing stringent measures to restore order and enhance its appeal.

Clampdown on Unregulated Trading and Traffic Management:

In a significant move to declutter the city, the administration has prohibited street trading, enforcing a strict ban on hawking within the central business district (CBD). Traders have been directed to utilize the 13 modern markets available in the city, including the underutilized Sh600 million Uhuru Business Park. City Manager Abala Wanga, after consultations with City Inspectorate officials, has indicated a zero-tolerance policy towards unregulated street vending. Violators will face arrest and substantial fines, marking a departure from the previous practice of merely confiscating goods.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the administration has barred public service vehicles from entering certain areas and plans to dismantle the Kamas and Ahero Mowuok stages. City traffic marshals will be deployed for better traffic management in the CBD. Additionally, sugarcane-hauling trucks will be fined Sh10,000 for city access, and livestock found loitering in the city will incur a Sh1000 fine per animal.

Enhanced Security Measures and Urban Planning:

The county government’s plans extend to addressing security concerns by removing street families from public parks by January 15. This decision follows reports of increased crime in parks such as Oile and Taifa. Wanga attributed these security challenges to the presence of street families, stating they pose a risk to park-goers seeking recreational activities.

Further, traders with stalls erected on drainage systems or operating without approvals, particularly around the Jubilee market and the bus park, have been ordered to remove them. This directive aligns with last year’s efforts where the government demolished stalls built on drainage paths to improve the city’s order and sanitation.

A Vision for a Revitalized Kisumu:

These sweeping reforms reflect Governor Nyong’o’s vision of positioning Kisumu as a key economic and tourism hub. The administration’s holistic approach, focusing on urban order, security, and efficient city management, is expected to not only attract investors but also enhance the quality of life for residents. As these changes take effect, Kisumu is poised to set a benchmark for urban renewal and sustainable city management in the region.

Kisumu steps up campaign to promote tourism

The number of tourist arrivals in Kisumu has increased significantly following the launch of an aggressive campaign to promote the lakeside county as a destination of choice. Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang Nyong’o said the campaign dubbed ‘Kisumu My Pride’ has positioned the county as a premier destination showcasing the area’s vibrant culture and key attraction sites.

He said records from the Ministry of Tourism indicated a substantial increase in the number of tourists visiting Kisumu compared to the previous years, highlighting the county’s potential to attract more visitors. According to the Ministry’s Exit Survey (ES) conducted in April 2023, Kisumu International Airport recorded 1, 820 tourist arrivals during the period under review.

The highest number of arrivals were recorded at the Busia border with 147, 125 tourists followed by Malaba with 47, 132 tourists. Nyong’o lauded the growth in tourists’ arrivals which he said has impacted positively on the economy, boosted revenue collections and created job opportunities for the locals.

Speaking during a roundtable meeting with stakeholders in the tourism sector, Nyong’o said despite the positive indicators, Kisumu has the potential to attract more tourists. “Ladies and gentlemen, we must grow these numbers. Kisumu can do better and this is why this roundtable meeting is very important for us,” he said.

Prof. Nyongó said the just concluded Fish Fiesta 2024, which is the county’s signature tourism event, was successful and called for more partnerships with all the stakeholders to attract more tourists. “Let us leverage on the networks and relationships established through the Fish Fiesta and the Kisumu My Pride Campaign to drive initiatives that will have a lasting impact on our community,” he said.

Warning for 2024 ski season after thousands turned around from snow

The ski season officially kicks off in NSW and Victoria this weekend despite the lack of snow – and authorities have a stern warning for visitors.

The snow season is officially open in NSW and Victoria this weekend and authorities are warning snow-goers to come prepared.

Victoria Police issued a warning on Friday saying it had zero-tolerance for unprepared travellers after turning around more than 3600 cars last season at Mt Hotham alone for not having the necessary wheel chains.

There will be a “heavy police presence” at Mt Buller, Mt Hotham, Falls Creek, Mt Baw Baw, Lake Mountain, and Mt Stirling.

“We want travellers to create memories on the slopes, and not on the roadside,” Superintendent Shane Cashman said.

“If you’re driving in poor weather and contending with conditions like rain, ice or snow, please use common sense – slow down, keep a safe braking distance and use your headlights to see and be seen.

“We’ll be on the lookout for poor driving behaviour, so things like speeding, impaired driving, distraction, fatigue and people not wearing seatbelts.”

Failure to carry chains in Victoria could cost you $370, while not fitting them could lead to a $970 fine.

Authorities drew attention to an incident on opening weekend last year where an 18-year-old drove off a cliff at Mt Buller, with the car coming to rest on its side and only stopped from sliding further down the mountain by trees.

Police responded to 19 search and rescue calls during last year’s snow season, including eight at Falls Creek, seven at Mt Hotham and four at Mt Buller.

Superintendent Cashman urged snow-goers to always inform someone of their plans.

NSW Police have deployed officers from across the state to the Snowy Mountains region.

Officers there will be targeting alcohol-related crime in licensed venues, dangerous and distracted driving on roads leading to the snow, and risky behaviour on the slopes.

Last snow season, SES teams responded to 31 incidents in the region.

NSW SES Acting Commissioner Debbie Platz told skiers, snowboarders and hikers on Friday to hire a Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) before heading into remote areas.

“Snowfield conditions can be difficult to navigate,” she said.

“Visitors should expect bad weather and be prepared for it. Hikers – no matter how experienced – should stick to the tracks, as whiteouts and snow clouds can quickly and easily disorientate.”

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Joe Cassar said the snowfields attracted about a million tourists over the season and the new Jindabyne Police Station, which opened earlier this year, would be an important base for search and rescue operations.

It is home to the alpine operations room, which allows police to “co-ordinate and monitor emergency situations in real time”.

“Snowfield conditions can be difficult to navigate so we’d like to remind everyone to prioritise safety on your journey, plan your trip, take regular breaks, check the weather conditions before leaving and fix snow chains to your tyres in slippery conditions,” he said.

He said realistically, every year there is a new cohort of drivers that have just got their licence and want to bee line straight to the snow.

“Until you hit black ice, you don’t know how to handle it … whether it’s your first year driving or you’ve been driving for 30 years just drive to the conditions and take your time to get there safely,” he warned.

Unfortunately, there will be limited skiing options this opening weekend.

Local MP for Monaro Steve Whan said they were hoping for a huge dump of snow in the next week or so to get the season going.

“Hopefully we’ll get those temperatures that allow the snow-making happen,” he said.

“The resorts have put a huge investment into snow-making so we can be confident once we get the night time temperatures, there will be snow for people to come and ski on.”

Victoria Police’s key safety tips for those heading to the snow:

• Ensure your car’s radiator is filled with antifreeze and if diesel, use Alpine Mix.

• Drive cautiously with gradual pressure on the accelerator to avoid wheel spin.

• Brake gently and avoid unnecessary gear changes.

• Maintain a safe braking distance from vehicles in front, especially in poor visibility.

tourism news in kisumu

A commercial airline flight made an emergency landing in Colorado this week after an issue with its landing gear during takeoff.

Southwest Air Flight No. 225, headed from Denver to Phoenix on Monday night, had return to the Denver International Airport and make the emergency landing after an issue with one of its tires during takeoff.

According to the online site Flight Aware , which tracks flight paths, the Boeing 737-800 took off at 6:31 p.m., was diverted and then returned to the Denver airport 41 minutes later.

No injuries were reported.

Southwest tire blows during takeoff from Denver

On Friday, the airline released the following statement to USA TODAY:

"Southwest Flight 225 returned safely to Denver on Monday, June 3, after a tire failed during takeoff. Following standard Safety procedures, the Pilots declared an emergency prior to landing. The flight landed without incident and taxied off the runway. A separate aircraft operated the scheduled flight to Phoenix."

In the statement, the airline thanked its flight crew for "their professionalism" and its customers for "their patience."

'Crying and screaming'

Boulder resident Julianna Donadio, who said she was on the plane headed to visit her mom, told local KDVR-TV , she and fellow passengers knew the plane blew a tire.

“When the flight attendants said we were going to have an emergency landing, we started to panic a little bit. People were definitely crying and screaming and trying to console one another,” told the outlet. “They started preparing us for crash position, so having our head between our knees, and they were informing the emergency exit line how to open the doors and operate potentially the slides.”

Donadio told the outlet she was grateful to the pilot and crew, who all remained calm during the frightening scene.

Kisumu to hold road race to promote city’s sports, tourism

tourism news in kisumu

Kisumu County has announced plans to run a conservation road race and family fun run dubbed ‘Kisumu My Pride City Run’ on September 24 as a way to promote the city’s sports, culture, and tourism sectors.

The event will feature during this year’s Kisumu Tourism Week celebrated alongside the United Nations World Tourism Day 2023 commemorated on September 27.

In her remarks during a press briefing, the CECM in charge of Tourism Farida Salim said that the Directorate of Tourism has partnered with Kenya Wildlife Service, Athletics Kenya Nyanza North, and Tourism Fund, to promote a sustainable tourism sector in the region.

Salim projected that over 5,000 participants are expected to attend the fete thus making it the largest environmental conservation event in the lake region.

“This will not just be about the race, it is a celebration of community and healthy living, connecting with fellow participants, making new friends, and experiencing the vibrant atmosphere that Kisumu County has to offer,” stated the CECM.

Activities lined up for the day include a road race for adults and kids fun run, a tri-cycling competition for people with disabilities, a nature festival at the Kisumu Impala sanctuary and an awards gala.

“These events are a great way to engage with local people, especially the fun run which is really accessible to everyone, including children and adults looking forward to running together as families or those new to running sports,” Salim explained.

Speaking at the same event, Athletics Kenya Nyanza North Secretary, Thomas Ongwacho urged the locals to massively register for the event that seeks to identify and nurture young athletes.

Ongwacho noted that participants will compete in three main races; a 5-km fun run, a 10-km race for both locals and elite athletes, and a 21-km half marathon competition. The winners in each category will receive cash rewards during an award gala.

“This activity is open for everybody whether young or old. As we launch the registration exercise, I urge us to enroll in masses to have a chance to take part in this historic event,” Ongwacho appealed.

The registration fee to participate in any of the activities is charged uniformly at Sh2100 for both adults and children.

The annual World Tourism Day celebration seeks to foster awareness among the international community on the importance of tourism on its social, cultural, political, and economic value.

This year’s celebration will be themed, ‘ Tourism and Green Investment – Investing in People, Planet and Prosperity ’.

Trump Has Been Convicted. Here’s What Happens Next.

Donald J. Trump has promised to appeal, but he may face limits on his ability to travel and to vote as he campaigns for the White House.

Donald J. Trump in a dark suit, red tie and white shirt.

By Jesse McKinley and Maggie Astor

  • May 30, 2024

The conviction of former President Donald J. Trump on Thursday is just the latest step in his legal odyssey in New York’s court system. The judge, Juan M. Merchan, set Mr. Trump’s sentencing for July 11, at which point he could be sentenced to as much as four years behind bars, or to probation.

It won’t stop him from running for president, though: There is no legal prohibition on felons doing that . No constitutional provision would stop him even from serving as president from a prison cell, though in practice that would trigger a crisis that courts would almost certainly have to resolve.

His ability to vote — for himself, presumably — depends on whether he is sentenced to prison. Florida, where he is registered, requires felons convicted there to complete their full sentence, including parole or probation, before regaining voting rights. But when Floridians are convicted in another state, Florida defers to the laws of that state, and New York disenfranchises felons only while they are in prison.

The Trump Manhattan Criminal Verdict, Count By Count

Former President Donald J. Trump faced 34 felony charges of falsifying business records, related to the reimbursement of hush money paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels in order to cover up a sex scandal around the 2016 presidential election.

“Because Florida recognizes voting rights restoration in the state of conviction, and because New York’s law states that those with a felony conviction do not lose their right to vote unless they are incarcerated during the election, then Trump will not lose his right to vote in this case unless he is in prison on Election Day,” said Blair Bowie, a lawyer at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit watchdog group.

Mr. Trump will almost certainly appeal his conviction, after months of criticizing the case and attacking the Manhattan district attorney, who brought it, and Justice Merchan, who presided over his trial.

Long before that appeal is heard, however, Mr. Trump will be enmeshed in the gears of the criminal justice system.

A pre-sentencing report makes recommendations based on the defendant’s criminal record — Mr. Trump had none before this case — as well as his personal history and the crime itself. The former president was found guilty of falsifying business records in relation to a $130,000 payment to Stormy Daniels, a porn star who says she had a brief sexual tryst with Mr. Trump in 2006, in order to buy her silence.

At the pre-sentence interview, a psychologist or social worker working for the probation department may also talk to Mr. Trump, during which time the defendant can “try to make a good impression and explain why he or she deserves a lighter punishment,” according to the New York State Unified Court System.

The pre-sentencing report can also include submissions from the defense, and may describe whether “the defendant is in a counseling program or has a steady job.”

In Mr. Trump’s case, of course, he is applying — as it were — for a steady job as president of the United States, a campaign that may be complicated by his new status as a felon. Mr. Trump will likely be required to regularly report to a probation officer, and rules on travel could be imposed.

Mr. Trump was convicted of 34 Class E felonies, New York’s lowest level , each of which carry a potential penalty of up to four years in prison. Probation or home confinement are other possibilities that Justice Merchan can consider.

That said, Justice Merchan has indicated in the past that he takes white-collar crime seriously . If he did impose prison time, he would likely impose the punishment concurrently, meaning that Mr. Trump would serve time on each of the counts he was convicted of simultaneously.

If Mr. Trump were instead sentenced to probation, he could still be jailed if he were later found to have committed additional crimes. Mr. Trump, 77, currently faces three other criminal cases: two federal, dealing with his handling of classified documents and his efforts to overturn the 2020 election , and a state case in Georgia that concerns election interference.

Mr. Trump’s lawyers can file a notice of appeal after sentencing, scheduled for July 11 at 10 a.m. And the judge could stay any punishment during an appeal, something that could delay punishment beyond Election Day.

The proceedings will continue even if he wins: Because it’s a state case, not federal, Mr. Trump would have no power as president to pardon himself .

Guilty Verdict : Donald Trump was convicted on all 34 counts  of falsifying records to cover up a sex scandal that threatened his bid for the White House in 2016, making him the first American president to be declared a felon .

What Happens Next: Trump’s sentencing hearing on July 11 will trigger a long and winding appeals process , though he has few ways to overturn the decision .

Reactions: Trump’s conviction reverberated quickly across the country  and around the world . Here’s what voters , New Yorkers , Republicans , Trump supporters  and President Biden  had to say.

The Presidential Race : The political fallout of Trump’s conviction is far from certain , but the verdict will test America’s traditions, legal institutions and ability to hold an election under historic partisan tension .

Making the Case: Over six weeks and the testimony of 20 witnesses, the Manhattan district attorney’s office wove a sprawling story  of election interference and falsified business records.

Legal Luck Runs Out: The four criminal cases that threatened Trump’s freedom had been stumbling along, pleasing his advisers. Then his good fortune expired .

NJ Health Department Alerts Residents of Travel-Associated Confirmed Measles Case, Urges Individuals To Stay Up to Date on Vaccines

TRENTON, NJ – The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) is alerting residents about potential exposure associated with a confirmed, travel-associated case of measles. Individuals – especially parents, guardians, health care providers, and caregivers – are urged to be aware of the symptoms of this highly contagious virus and to stay up to date with the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) shots.

The confirmed case is a resident of Somerset County and developed measles following travel from a country that is currently experiencing an ongoing outbreak of measles.

Measles symptoms include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that usually appears between three and five days after symptoms begin. The rash usually begins as flat red spots that appear on the face at the hairline and spread downward to the neck, torso, arms, legs, and feet. Measles can also cause serious complications, such as pneumonia and encephalitis (swelling of the brain), and can lead to miscarriage in pregnant people, premature birth, or a low-birth-weight baby.

Anyone who visited the following location at the specified date and times may have been exposed to the virus:

  • Location: Emergency Department, Penn Medicine Princeton Medical Center 1 Plainsboro Road, Plainsboro Township, NJ 08536
  • Date & Time: June 1, 2024 between 12:00 PM (noon) and 3:30 PM

NJDOH recommends that anyone who visited the location listed above during the specified date and times should contact a health care provider immediately to discuss potential exposure and risk of developing the illness.

Potentially exposed individuals, if infected, could develop symptoms as late as June 26, 2024 . Contact tracing is underway. As of June 5, no additional associated cases have been identified.

The virus is easily spread through the air when someone coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves the area. People can also get sick when they come in contact with mucus or saliva from an infected person.

NJDOH is working in collaboration with local health officials and Penn Medicine to notify people who might have been exposed and to identify additional exposures that may have occurred. Those who may have been exposed or who suspect illness should call their health care provider first before arriving at any facility so that necessary infection prevention precautions can be taken to protect other patients and staff.

Individuals at risk include those who have not been fully vaccinated or have not had measles in the past.

NJDOH encourages all residents to stay up-to-date on routine vaccinations and especially recommends that New Jersey residents planning to travel , regardless of destination, are up to date on MMR shots .

MMR vaccine, administered in two doses, is safe and the most effective way to protect against measles, mumps, and rubella. The vaccine is also effective at preventing complications caused by these highly contagious diseases.
