Vík í Mýrdal

Discover Iceland’s wild south coast from this charming village.

Vik Church with Reynisdrangar sea stacks in the distance

Surrounded by a volcano, glacier, and black sand beach, head here to immerse yourself in nature

With its colorful buildings and red-roofed church overlooking the village, you’ll find there’s an undeniable charm about Vík í Mýrdal. Though its picturesque appearance stands in contrast with the region’s rugged landscapes and its position beneath an active volcano.

This volcano is called Katla, derived from the Icelandic word for a kettle. Appropriate, as it’s thought to erupt every 50–100 years, which is pretty frequent in geological terms. The people who live here have drills to practice what to do in case there’s an eruption.

Aside from the volcano, you’ll notice that there are countless other sights and attractions to explore when you’re visiting Vík.

In the village itself, you could try the local cuisine, learn about the region’s geology at the visitor center, or go horseback riding. And not far away, you could look for puffins, take a guided tour of ice caves, or walk along the iconic Reynisfjara beach.

On top of its incredible natural beauty, the area is also known for handcrafted knitwear. So why not treat yourself to a lovingly-made woolen garment from the Katla wool factory? Their Icelandic designs are made using wool from native sheep. What better way to remember your trip to Vík than with a practical keepsake?

FAQs about Vík í Mýrdal

Is the village of vík in iceland worth visiting.

Absolutely! If you’re exploring South Iceland or driving the Ring Road, you won’t want to miss the village of Vík í Mýrdal (also known as Vík). Although the village can boast that it’s the “warmest place in Iceland”, this probably isn’t why you’d come here.

It’s the dramatic scenery that’ll make your visit well worthwhile. During your time here you could glimpse a glacier-topped volcano, walk along black sand beaches, see nesting puffins, and more.

Where is Vík, Iceland?

You’ll find Vík í Mýrdal on the coast of South Iceland. In fact, it’s known for being the southernmost village or town in Iceland.

Dramatic sea cliffs and black sand beaches lie to the south of the village. Meanwhile, if you look north you’ll be able to see Katla volcano and the glacier covering it, Mýrdalsjökull.

How far is Vík from Reykjavík?

Located just off Iceland’s Ring Road, it’s a straightforward route from Reykjavík to Vík í Mýrdal. The 187-kilometer (116-mile) drive from the capital usually takes around 2½ hours.

The village is a popular place to stop for visitors discovering the south coast by car or on a group tour. This is because, as well as being pretty, the village has the best services in the area, including places to eat, shops, and public restrooms. So it’s a handy place to stop if you’re travelling around Iceland.

How can I get to Vík from Reykjavík?

From Reykjavík, the easiest way to drive to Vík is by taking route 49 out of the capital. You’ll then join the Ring Road (or Route 1), which you can follow all the way to Vík í Mýrdal.

Where can I see puffins in Vík, Iceland?

One of the best places to see puffins in Iceland is Dyrhólaey, just a 20-minute drive west of Vík. Make your way up to the lighthouse viewpoint for a breathtaking outlook over the nearby rock arch.

But if you want to delve deeper, 2 or even 3 days could be ideal for you. This way you won’t be rushed, and you’ll have more time to visit attractions, try activities, and soak up the natural beauty surrounding you.

Vík

  • What to see
  • South Iceland

Despite its small size with only 300 inhabitants, Vík í Mýrdal is one of the most visited villages in the country thanks to its ideal location for visiting the southern coast of Iceland .

What to see in Vík?

The southernmost village in Iceland is located on the Ring Road  and, while only having a population of 300, is the largest settlement for miles around, making it a popular stop on trips around the country. It may be tiny, but Vík í Mýrdal, as it's officially known, is home to a number of spectacular landmarks and natural attractions that are well worth a visit:

  • Reynisfjara : this famous black beach is located a couple of miles from the centre of Vík, just across the Reynisfjall ridge. Its striking black sand and colossal basalt formations make it one of the most iconic places in Iceland. In 1991, it was voted amongst the top 10 most beautiful beaches in the world, and more recently, it has been used as a filming location for the History Channel's Vikings series.
  • Solheimasandur Plane Wreck : the abandoned DC-3 plane on the black beach at Sólheimasandur is one of the area's most popular tourist attractions and a surreal image. This American military plane crashed on the south coast of Iceland on 21st November 1973, and its fuselage has remained there ever since. The plane wreck can't be accessed by car, and it's up to a 2 hour walk across the black sand from the car park. As conditions can be harsh, it's not recommend to do the walk during winter and in bad weather , but there's a shuttle bus as an alternative, and organised tours can take you to the plane by ATV or horse riding. Did you know there's also another plane wreck at Latrabjarg in the Westfjords ?
  • Víkurkirkja : this tiny church in Vík í Mýrdal is typical of Icelandic architecture. Located on a slight hill, the picturesque red and white building offers panoramic views of Vík and its coastline.

What to do in Vík?

Many people choose Vík as an ideal destination to spend a few nights and relax on their route around Iceland  before delving into the sights of the southern coast . The village does offer its own fair share of tourist activities.

A  lava show   in the village itself allows visitors to discover first-hand what happens when volcanoes erupt and enjoy the incredible natural phenomena that characterise Iceland's geography in a safe and fun way.

On the other end of the spectrum of the Land of Ice and Fire, Vík proves to be the ideal starting point for a trip to visit the glaciers and ice fields of southern Iceland. Climb on a glacier on our  Sólheimajökull Glacier Hike or explore inside one on our  Katla Ice Cave Tour .

Experience an Ice Cave Tour in Iceland

Southern Iceland is, hands down, one of the best locations to explore an ice cave in Iceland.  With so many local glaciers, the landscape is constantly shifting and changing to create these unique formations.  One of our favourite pass-times is discovering new super-secret ice caves.  And because we know the area so well, we know just where to find them, even outside of the typical ‘ice cave season’.  We love nothing more than sharing this year’s caves with our guests, before they’re gone forever.

The Hidden Mountains Tour

Perhaps you’d like to spend a day hunting for secret waterfalls or hidden caves?  Maybe you’d love to see where some of your favourite movies were shot or take a  custom Game of Thrones Tour?  Or perhaps you need a family-friendly tour, complete with adventure, as many bathrooms stop as you like and plenty of tales about mischievous elves and trolls? Our custom private tours are perfect for all of these requests and more. Tell us what you’re keen to see and do, and we’ll make it happen.

Just book it! You won't regret it.

We booked this trip to see the caves in the Katla glacier and we didn’t regret it one bit. It was an unbelievable experience and a must do if you plan to visit Iceland. Our guide A.J. was fun, educational and amazing. Really a must do!

Great experience!

We had a wonderful experience! Besides the amazing sightings, our experienced guide made it even more interesting with his knowledge, sense of humour and enthusiasm. I truly recommend Katlatrack Adventure Tours (which is a family run local company!)

Katla Ice Cave

Bessi was an amazing guide. The trip was absolutely incredible, safe, and shouldn’t be missed if going to this region. The best part is that the caves are constantly changing as the glacier evolves season after season, so no two tours are exactly alike. The landscapes around the ice cave alone are worth the trip (scenes from Star Wars were filmed there), and the ice cave itself is amazing. Memories to last a lifetime!

Highly recommended!

My friend and I had a lot of fun doing “Katla Ice Cave Tour”. All guides have a good sense of humour and tell a lot of very interesting stories, visit the cave was also very exciting. Remember about good shoes and take your gloves with you. I highly recommend it to everyone!!

A highlight - Do not miss!

Worth every dollar, do not miss this opportunity to go into an ice cave and see a beautiful black sand beach. (not the tourist one). This one really has fine black sand. Seeing a glacier up close was an experience of a lifetime. We have hiked several glaciers but this was much much better and was not too strenuous. I felt safe at all times.

As far as enchanting little towns go, Vík, Iceland takes home the prize.

With a population of only 750 people, it’s located on the South Coast around 187 km (116 miles) from Reykjavík. Without a doubt, it’s one of the most beautiful areas of Iceland.

Hands up if you thought Vík stood for Viking 👋 – just me? Well, what I know now is that it means “bay” in Icelandic.

Accessible year-round, you may have heard of it because it’s one of the most common places to stop and stay overnight while exploring South Iceland.

The road trip from Vík, Iceland to Reykjavík comes with a few incredible sights along the way, including Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss waterfalls.

You could opt to travel from Reykjavík to Vík by bus or you could rent a car.

I must say, nothing quite beats the freedom of exploring the local sites on your own time.

So, if you’re looking to rent a car in Iceland, I highly recommend Blue Car Rental. They’re a local business that understands Iceland’s roads, AND they’ve got excellent customer service.

In the winter, the weather can be described as cold, windy, and cloudy.

Vík doesn’t usually experience heavy snowfall during the winter months. Summers tend to be cool and rainy.

The weather here is generally wet, with the rainiest month being in September, averaging about 260mm (10.2 inches) of rain.

Don’t let this deter you though. As they say, there’s no such thing as bad weather in Iceland, just bad clothes. So pack smart!

Average Temperatures in Vík

The average temperature in the winter is 1.9°C (35°F) and in the summer around July, it averages about 11°C (52°F).

As with any place you’re visiting, the first thing you need to know about are the main sites, which of course, also offer some amazing photo opportunities!

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach

Picture of Reynisfjara, Black Sand Beach in Vik, Iceland | Iceland with a View

Probably every tourist wants to visit this location in Vík, Iceland, because the black sand beach is so beautiful and unique.

The beach is called Reynisfjara, and the black basalt columns are known as Reynisdrangar.

Did you know that the beach was also a filming location for Game of Thrones ? Pretty cool!

It’s also a great spot to view the Northern Lights – but please adhere to the safety rules!

Swimming here is strictly prohibited because the currents are incredibly strong. The waves can be extremely dangerous, so as a tip, never turn your back to the ocean. Sneaker waves come up higher than the others and can drag you right out to sea, so be very careful!

The name “Dyrhólaey” translates to “the hill island with the door hole”. It’s a famous rock arch that extends into the ocean showing off some spectacular views!

Lighthouse : You’ll see the big beautiful Dyrhólaey Lighthouse right there! It’s easily accessible from the parking area and once there, you get a view down either side of the black sand beach. Visitors aren’t allowed to enter the lighthouse, but it still makes for great photos!

Beautiful views : From Dyrhólaey, you’re actually looking towards Reynisfjara on the one side and a beautiful coastline on the other. From the upper area, you can gaze out and see Mýrdalsjökull glacier and the lava rock formations of Reynisdrangar.

The quaint little village of Vík is just a 15-minute drive down the road from these sites.

The Village of Vík

As you drive into the village, the iconic Vík í Mýrdal church with its distinctive red roof comes into view, perched at the top of the hill.

You’ve probably seen that classic panorama featuring the church, black sand beach, basalt columns and beautiful little houses.

To capture this picturesque scene, all you have to do is drive up the hill for the perfect vantage point for that beautiful photo.

If you’re interested in a guided tour of South Iceland that includes all these major sites and more, take a look at this South Coast Tour .

Don’t think for a moment that your adventure is limited to the main attractions. I’ve sprinkled in a few of Jeannie’s gems that are well worth exploring, to ensure your journey to Vík, Iceland is one to remember.

Katla Museum: This museum provides information about the nearby volcano called Katla. Inside you’ll find a small photo exhibition about the volcano, and there’s an adorable gift shop attached.

The best part? It’s free! And, it’s a great opportunity to learn more about Iceland, while spending about 30 minutes to an hour exploring the exhibits.

Lava Show : This show is so much fun for the whole family! Real lava that solidified from Katla’s 1918 eruption is re-melted and poured out. All the while, the narrator gives a vivid account of the eruption.

Take A Tour : Private South Coast Day Tour with Icelandic Lava Show and Glacier View

Hidden black sand beach : There’s a second, lesser-known black sand beach on the other side of the basalt column. Not a lot of people go there (hence the “hidden” 😉) So, if you want the beach all to yourself, this is the place to go for a more secluded experience.

Exploring the town: Vík offers a range of shopping options, from Ice Wear Apparel to cute little souvenir shops in the downtown area. My suggestion? Take it easy –  do some window shopping, stretch your legs, and soak in the scenery. It’s a perfect excuse to enjoy the town’s charm!

Northern Lights: Because there is minimal light pollution, Reynisfjara is a great spot to view the Northern Lights. Just bear in mind that weather conditions can affect the visibility of the aurora.

Ice cave tours: If you’re traveling to Iceland in the winter, the ice caves are finally safe to enter. Katla is the second most active volcano in Iceland. It’s an incredible experience to be in the cave, surrounded by all that ice! And when you exit, the skies are orange and pink – the beauty of it literally left me speechless.

You can book your Katla Ice Cave tour ➡️ HERE

I vlogged about my experience on that tour below if you want to take a look 👇

Hot spring : If you’re looking for a pool or hot spring near Vík, Iceland, then Seljavallalaug Pool is a 42.4km or 36-minute drive from Vík. The natural hot spring is roughly a 5-minute walk from the pool.

After a day of exploring, you’re going to be hungry! Let’s take a look at the dining options in Vík.

Suður-Vík: Now, there aren’t a whole lot of dining options available but I must tell you, one of the best restaurants in Vík, and my absolute favorite is Suður-Vík.

It’s a delightful restaurant located in an old home, with antique furniture, creaking floors, cozy atmosphere AND great food.  They have our favorite classic Icelandic meal – cheese pizza with jam.

I know it sounds weird, but don’t knock it until you try it!

We honestly don’t travel through Vík without stopping here for a bite.

The Soup Company: If all you want is a comforting bowl of warm soup to warm your soul, then this is the place to go! They serve soups like Icelandic Lamb Soup or their best seller: the Red Hot Lava Soup packed with spicy beef, lentils, red wine, and other yummy ingredients. Plus it’s served in a black bread bowl. There are also vegan options on the menu.

Not in the mood for soup? Then they also serve salads or indulgent homemade cakes – which you absolutely need to for an energy-boost – honestly, it’s just science. 😜

Halldorskaffi: Serves burgers , pizza, and Icelandic favorites like lamb and fish. There are also delicious vegetarian options available. Halldorskaffi also received the Tripadvisors 2023 Traveller’s Choice Award! A great option for eating out when visiting Vík.

Hotels: Vík, Iceland Accommodation

Vík is the perfect day trip because of its proximity to Reykjavík, but if you’re planning to stay overnight, I’ve got a few awesome suggestions for hotels in Vík that will make your experience even more enjoyable.

Hotel Kría : This is a newer hotel on the main road with a beautiful view of the ocean and mountains. What I love about it is, they’ve got everything you need.

Their staff is warm and welcoming, and there’s an awesome bar with happy hour deals, cozy seating, a beautiful restaurant, and an excellent breakfast.

They’ll even wake you up with a Northern Lights call if they see the aurora outside!

I highly recommend staying here.

➡️ Find out more: Hotel Kría

Volcano Hotel: This hotel is located a mere 10-minute drive from Vík and is a family-run hotel located in the Southernmost part of Iceland. The rooms are beautiful and breakfast is included in the price. Plus, tea and coffee are always available, without charge !

Farmhouse Lodge Vík: Located between Reykjavík and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, the rooms are modern and very spacious. You can also choose their “Glamping” accommodation option, where you get the benefits of camping outdoors, with the comforts of a hotel room.

That’s what I’m talking about!

You’ll also have access to facilities like toilets and showers. No digging holes out in nature. Not today, my friend. Not today !

Hotel Dyrhólaey Vík: This is a family-run hotel with spectacular views of the Mýrdalur valley, beach and Dyrhólaey peninsula. The hotel also has a restaurant with delicious dishes, a bar, and a gym where you can work off all those extra calories!

Witness a recreation of a volcanic eruption, similar to nearby volcanoes, Katla and Eyjafjallajokull. In this demonstration, molten lava will be poured into the showroom over ice. This is a great kid-friendly activity in Iceland!

Hear the pop and sizzles of 1100-2000 degree Celsius lava as you feel the intense heat radiate within the room. It’s no joke that this lava burns at the same temperatures as the nearby Katla and Eyjafjallajokull volcanoes!

Don’t miss the only live lava show in the world when visiting Vik, Iceland. Everyone will enjoy the sensory loaded experience of real molten lava. Strap on the goggles, bring a friend, and witness the mighty power of volcanoes in the south coast.

Visit the Solheimasandur Plane Crash

One of the best free things to do near Vik, is to visit the landing site of the Solheimasandur plane crash . This spot is famous for the DC-3 US Navy plane that crashed onto Solheimasandur Beach in south Iceland after running out of fuel. Since, this site has become a cool place to visit.

Even though the plane is not much more than the skeleton, it still remains one of the beloved attractions near Vik. The skeleton of the white plane, is seen stranded in the middle of the volcanic black sands on Solheimasandur Beach which created a stunning view amidst an otherwise empty shore. The crash is so cool that it even made it into the Justin Bieber music video, ”I’ll Show You”.

Just a quick 34 minute detour from from town, a visit to the Solheimasandur plane crash is totally worth the drive. This is one of the best free things to do around Vik for the whole family.

Vik i Myrdal Church

Don’t miss the most popular and most photographed church in all of Iceland, visit Vik i Myrdal, the church on the hill. This is one of the most iconic churches in Iceland . It attracts many visitors and photographers every year as it is absolutely beautiful and picturesque. The quaint white church with the red roof looks over the whole town of Vik, with the black sand beaches in view too.

Vik i Myrdal Church is accessible all year around; however we prefer to visit in the summer months when hillsides are filled with blooming purple lupine flowers. Go for great photos, meditation, and the incredible view. This church is one of the best places to visit in Vik!

Cappuccinos from Skool Beans Coffee

Head to Skool Beans for one of the best things to do in Vik. Don’t miss this incredibly epic coffee house in town. Believe it or not, but this coffee shop was made out of the back of an old school bus, hence the name Skool Beans. It is truly one of the best cafes in Iceland!

The Skool Beans coffee bus is off the beaten path in Vik. Head toward the town campgrounds and look for the big yellow bus. Although the bus is not big enough to seat many, it is such a cool spot, that we did not even care.

Inside, you’ll find that Skool Beans does not lack in personality, not to mention quality. You can find a variety of locally designed souvenirs such as pins, mugs, and stickers. Be on the look out for Jeffery, the outdoor cat that runs the whole joint. As a joke, the owners of Skool Beans even have Jeffery themed souvenirs too.

Trust us when we say you will not want to miss out on this unique coffee shop. Not only is Skool Beans the coolest coffee house in Iceland , the drinks that come out of there are super tasty too.

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beaches

Another one of the best things to do in Vik is to walk among the Reynisfjara black sand beaches . This is one of the best beaches in Iceland, and is a short drive from Vik. In fact, this beach is so iconic that Game of Thrones and Starwars were filmed there.

Reynisfjara beach is the best place to see basalt rock columns, sea caves, and cute Icelandic puffins. You can even find the giant sea stack formations of Reynisdragnar there. According to lore, Reynisdragnar is the resting place of petrified giant trolls that were once turned to stone as dawn’s first light struck their bodies.

Don’t miss the best beaches in Iceland ; Reynisfjara is one of the best things to do around Vik afterall. You can visit this enchanting beach with kids, friends, or as a romantic stop for two. Just stay safe while exploring the beach and keep an eye out for powerful sleeper waves present on this coastline.

For more tips and tricks on Reynisfjara beach , check out our blog post filled with all the best information on how to visit.

Dyrholaey Promontory

A visit to the Dyrholaey is one of the best things to do around Vik, that needs to be added to the Iceland itinerary . Dyrholaey is a small peninsula that juts into the crashing waves of the Atlantic in the south coast of Iceland, very near Reynisfjara and Vik. This massive rock structure is not only the best spot to get a birds eye view of the coastline, but it also has a charming century old lighthouse too!

Dyrholaey is one of the best beaches to visit in Iceland for ionic for its unique promontory, or land that juts into the water. In fact, Dyrholaey translates to “door hill island,” which refers to the naturally formed arches in the peninsula’s base. These arches, or ‘doors’, are so large that even some ships and small airplanes can pass through it!

There is a great view to be seen in each direction at Dyrholaey. Cast your gaze to the mighty Katla volcano in the north, or to the Reynisdragnar sea stacks to the east. You can even spot cute Puffins and Artic Terns along the sea cliffs in the summer time, as Dyrholaey promontory is also a dedicated bird sancturary.

Because this awesome place makes for popular puffin nesting grounds, Dyrholaey is at times closed. While only for a short time during puffin nesting season of early May- mid June, car access is restricted on the peninsula. However, you can still walk on foot to visit the lighthouse, or view Dyrholaey from the lower beach access. Dyrholaey is one of the best free attractions near Vik, that you absolutely will not want to miss!

Open your taste buds to flavors like the Halta Ketti- milkshake Kveik IPA poured straight from the tap. Visit Hafnleysa Maritime Museum

Hafnleysa Maritime Museum is one of the best attractions in Vik. This museum tells the stories about the uniqueness of Vik, the only fishing village in Iceland that does not have a harbor. In fact, Vik has never had a harbor. That is why the Skaftfellingur ship alone changed the destiny of Vik.

Due to the violent Atlantic ocean waves and sandy shallows along the Vik coastline, the construction of piers was always inhibited, which forced locals to travel long distances for imported goods. Skaftfellingur ship was constructed in 1918 in Denmark and brought to Iceland. Overtime, the Skaftfellingur ship had become an important tool in the growth and development of Vik. Skaftfellingur earned its place in the heart of the community quickly, but was later seized by the British in August of 1942. However, in 2001, Vik church artist Sigrun Jonsdottir, later bought and brought Skaftfellingur back to its home in Vik. Today, it stands as part of the museum.

Go to the Hafnleysa Maritime Museum to visit the incredible Skaftfellingur ship and other historical artifacts. Discover the stories of over 112 marine incidents, try on costumes from time’s past, and watch the exclusive documentary filled with historic footage of Vik. This Vik attraction is ideal for families and history buffs, though we think everyone will enjoy this great museums of Iceland .

Go on a Horseback Riding Tour from Vik

Hands down, one of the best activities in Vik is the horseback riding tours . Riding horseback is the most fun way to explore the coast of Vik. Not to mention, this activity is totally picturesque. You’ll ride along the magical black sand beaches and the crashing waves of the Atlantic.

Channel the inner Viking warrior or goddess vibes within for a horseback ride on Iceland’s south coast. With knowledgable guides and well trained horses, you’ll feel right at ease even if you have never ridden a horse before. We think this is one of the best Icelandic tours in Vik. The tour is suitable for all levels, including beginners and is a great activity to take kids 10 and up.

Take a Dip in the Vik Swimming Pool

Another one of the best things to do in Vik, Iceland is to take a dip in the local swimming pool. It’s no lie that Icelanders enjoy swimming pools. Actually, the swimming pools are such a quintessential part of the true Icelandic experience.

Icelandic swimming pools are fabulous because they are heated! We love the outdoor pools the most because they are filled with gloriously warm waters and they offer fantastic scenic views.

You are likely to find many of the friendly locals at the swimming pools, as they are a great spot to hang out with friends. The Vik outdoor swimming pool also offers a sauna and hot tub to its visitors. Stop by for a dip in the amazing geothermal pool waters!

Hike and Camp in Thakgil Canyon

Another one of the great things to do near Vik is to hike and camp in the peaceful Thakgil Canyon. Close to Myrdalsjokull glacier, the beautiful green mossy canyon of Thakgil hides a secret oasis, one with a waterfall and small lagoon.

In the summer months you can hike through the beautiful Icelandic canyons and reach the camping site of Thakgil. There is a cool dining area for hikers inside of a cave complete with benches, a fireplace, and grills! There are even candles are fastened to the wall for light. If tent camping isn’t your thing, don’t worry, they have a small pine cottage to rent as well.

When visiting Thakgil Canyon, stop by its neighboring canyon, Remundargil. A gorgeous hike empties to the bottom of the canyon where you can see another tall and slender waterfall called Remundargilsfoss. The hike to the waterfall only takes about 30 minutes. This hike is fairly easy but will require climbing over a few large rocks.

Make the drive from Reykjavik to Vik and discover the beauty of south Iceland along the way. The drive is jam-packed with amazing gems that you won’t want to miss like Skofagoss waterfall , Reykjadalur Hot Springs, and guided hiking tours on Solheimajokull outlet glacier . Vik is the perfect town to rent a hotel or camp nearby.

There are so many fun things to do in Vik, Iceland. The tiny coastal village is full of history, hikes, delicious food, and adventure. Whether you take a beachside horseback riding tour, meet the locals at the outdoor swimming pool, or zipline across a canyon, a visit to Vik will be fun for everyone. katla-ice-cave-tour-from-vik-06

Your adventure starts when your guide picks you up at the Katlatrack meeting point (N1 gas station). From there, you’ll have an exhilarating Super Jeep ride through the private back road of Vík to reach the glacier area.

This will be an offbeat experience that will show you the quieter, authentic side of Iceland, far away from the crowds and the mainstream tours. As local guides, we spend more time than anyone else exploring this landscape and we know where all of the best ice caves hide!

As always, your safety is paramount on our tours. Visitors should never risk exploring an ice cave without a highly experienced guide, so after fitting you up with some of our loan equipment (a helmet, headlamp and some crampons for your shoes), we’ll provide a full safety brief before making our way to the cave. After a short (10-15 minute) walk across the glacier, we’re ready to enter our ice cave!

The first stop is at the front of Kötlujökull – the Katla outlet glacier. Kötlujökull is actually part of the famous Mýrdalsjökull glacier – the fourth largest glacier in Iceland.

From here, you’ll take a short glacier hike across the ice to explore your first ice cave. You’ll marvel at the magnificent colors and textures inside the ice cave, and the stunning shapes and crystal clear blue ice will leave you in awe. Your ice cave guide will share the history of the ice caves of Iceland and explain how it was formed. You’ll learn how the volcanic eruptions of the Katla volcano caused the ash and sand to combine with the ice, to form the incredible shades of black and blue that appear almost like ‘dragon glass’. There will be plenty of ice cave photo opportunities, and plenty of time to ask questions and learn all you wish to know about these magnificent icy structures.

After some time in the main cave, you’ll take another short glacier walk as we hunt for secret waterfalls and hidden glacier canyons. You may have heard that visiting an ice cave is a “Once in a lifetime experience” – this couldn’t be truer, and we love nothing more than sharing this very unique experience with our guests! Iceland’s ice caves are constantly shifting and changing with the seasons, so the caves that you will experience on your glacier tour will never exist in the same form again. We are always scouting the glacier ice for new and hidden caves, so we know exactly where to find the most spectacular (and the safest) ice caves to show you on our tours. Some of these caves are on private land that can only be accessed with our guides, so it is also possible that your tour will include a visit to a secret ice cave. You’ll also explore one or two other ice caves, depending on the weather and ice conditions on the glacier.

After this incredible ice caving adventure, you’ll head back to the super jeep for our next destination: a private black sand beach. You will already be very familiar with Iceland’s most famous black sand beach, Reynisfjara, and we definitely recommend that you explore this beach in your own time. With us, you’ll visit a lesser-known black sand beach that you can explore and enjoy in privacy – far away from the tourist crowds!

Finally, your Super Jeep will take an exciting detour through the wild terrain to visit the actual film set from Star Wars Rogue One. You’ll see exactly where the opening scenes were shot as your guide shares all of the behind the scenes details. You’ll then go to some more filming locations such as Transformers, Noah, and Oblivion. Along the way, you will also enjoy some other memorable sights from the comfort of the Super Jeep, including the historical promontory of Hjörleifshöfði (named after one of the first Viking settlers in Iceland), the distinctive Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and of course, the beautiful local area around Vík.

  • Interesting places near Vík

Vik is the southernmost village in Iceland. It’s situated 110 kilometers (68,3 mi) from Reykjavík, South of Katla Volcano. Make a stop at the town of Vik as you travel along the Ring Road in South Iceland!

Vik i Myrdal is a common stop along the  South Coast , with excellent restaurants and all the basic services one might need, including a supermarket, a swimming pool, and a gas station.

The  Black Sand Beach  is in walking distance of the village and with only a few minutes driving you will have plenty of other amazing attractions. The biggest problem being how to choose which one to visit first!

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach Iceland

Vík is known for a mild climate and the surrounding mountains give shelter from the wind. A large Arctic Tern colony is located East of Vík but Mt. Reynisfjall to the West is home to numerous other bird species including the famed Puffin. Other birds are Fulmar, Kittiwake, and Auk.

The village is located at a very volcanically active area and as mentioned before the powerful Katla nests in a nearby glacier. This is where the whims of nature, such as volcanoes, have had a huge influence. It’s been said that if Katla would erupt, the glacier meltwater would likely go over most houses in the village with the exception of the mighty church.

Town of Vik in summertime

Vík is an important service in this part of Iceland. There are cafes and restaurants, a variety of shops, accommodation and all main services. Many tours which travel through South Iceland make a stop at Vík giving an opportunity to explore this scenic and welcoming village.

Vik Iceland has around 300 inhabitants making it the largest settlement in the area, it is part of the Mýrdalshreppur Municipality, and what might be a little confusing is that the village is also known as Vík í Mýrdal.

GPS coordinates of Vik :   63.4186° N, 19.0060° W

How to get to Vík?

You just need to follow Highway 1 ( the Ring Road ) in a southerly direction all the way. For those traveling from an easterly direction, Egilsstaðir is 448 km, Höfn 272 km and  Jökulsárlón  is 192 km.

Vík í Mýrdal Church

The white church with the red roof standing high on a hill above the village has become a totem of Vík. You rarely see a photo of Vík where the church isn’t the main focus and once you have laid your eyes on it, you’ll know why.

The church is called Víkurkirkja (basically the church of Vík) and was built in the years 1932 to 1934, which was about time, as a priest had lived in the village since 1911. Still today, the church is actively used and the priest of the congregation, called Víkursókn, is now Sr. Haraldur M Kristjánsson.

Fun fact : If  Katla volcano  would erupt the church is believed to be out of harm’s way and would likely stand its ground due to its high position.

Vik is full of incredible nature to explore. Here’s a list of the top places to go when you’re in town:

Mýrdalsjökull Glacier

The mighty Mýrdalsjökull is the glacier closest to Vík. It is the “mother-glacier” to both Sólheimajökull hiking paradise and Kötlujökull where a natural ice cave was found not too long ago so basically Mýrdalsjökull is a glacier tour utopia.

Katla Volcano

The famous volcano Katla is located underneath the  Mýrdalsjökull glacier . The epic volcano trail  Fimmvörðuháls  – the starting point of Eyjafjallajökull’s eruption in 2010 – is also located in between Mýrdalsjökull and  Eyjafjallajökull glacier .

Kötlujökull

Kötlujökull  is where “the Ice Cave under the Volcano” is located and the tour is available with pick up from Vík, making it the  ultimate Vík tour.

  • Reynisfjara

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach in Iceland

Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach  is the most famous black sand beach in Iceland and has even been named one of the top ten most stunning non-tropical beaches in the world a few times. It is a place of wild and dramatic beauty where the roaring waves of the Atlantic Ocean power ashore with tremendous force.

The roaring waves, stunning black basalt columns, the alluring basalt stacks, Reynisdrangar, in the ocean and the magical carved cave in Reynisfjall mountain are just some of the reasons people keep raving about this place.

Basalt Column Cave On Black Sand Beach

Marvel at the power of the ocean but do not stand too close – those powerful waves deserve your respect!  The waves can easily snatch you pretty quickly and if so even the fittest of swimmers will be in trouble. Be extra careful when traveling with children.

Dyrhólaey  or Door Hill Island is an unbelievably beautiful small peninsula or a mountain arch standing in the ocean near Vík. It is about 120 meters (393,7 ft) and was formerly known as Cape Portland by the sea-men that used to sail the surrounding waters. The view over Dyrhólaey is stunning but the view from it is no different.

Black Sand Beach view from Dyrhólaey cliffs

To the North, you have the robust Mýrdalsjökull glacier and then in the East, you have the dazzling black lava basalt columns Reynisdrangar. In the West, the whole South coastline meets your eyes so the vista will not disappoint.

In summer, puffins are known to hang out at Dyrhólaey and the place is known to be a good location to spot them!

Weather in Vík

Vík is known for its mild but rainy weather. The village is, like most hamlets in Iceland, located at the shore which results in an almost constant ocean breeze.

In winter, Vík will get covered in snow and in summer there will be a fantastic array of colorful flowers and purple lupins. The weather conditions in Vík are often quite similar to Reykjavík but is also a victim to quite some downpours.

Vik Village in winter time

The  Icelandic weather forecast  has an excellent web page where you can check the weather a week in advance but make sure to continue checking, the weather gods tend to change their mind quite frequently.

Vik i Myrdal is an excellent location to spot the Northern Lights and is a common stop on Arctic Adventures multi-day tours to see them!

Do I need to wear a helmet?

We take safety very seriously and therefore require everyone to wear a helmet for the entire duration of the tour.

Do I need to make a booking, or can I just show up?

It’s always best to book if you are planning to ride with us. We get busy in the summer season so there may not be spots for walk-ins. Even in the quieter times of the year, it is better to have a booking because then we can have suitable horses ready for you – we might otherwise be out training horses for example.

If you want to keep your plans flexible and just drop in when you’re passing, it’s best if come at least 1 hour before a scheduled ride is due to depart. This means that if there is space for you to join the ride, we have time to prepare a horse for you.

Do you offer pick up?

Unfortunately, we do not offer a pick-up service. We are around 3 hours drive from Reykjavík, most people come in a rental car.

What time do we need to be at the stable?

Please be at the stable, dressed and ready to ride, 15 minutes before your departure time (e.g. 08:45 for the 09:00 ride). This allows time for you to be signed in, get a helmet fitted, and a run-through of a quick demo/safety briefing so that everyone is on the horses and ready to leave on time. Please be aware that if you come late (e.g. 09:00 for the 09:00 am ride), we may not be able to hold the group for you.

We’re running late - can we still join the tour we booked?

We aim to be on the horses and heading out the door at the time of your tour. Therefore, if you come at 9.00 for the 9.00 tour, it’s unfortunately not possible to hold the tour for you. Before you get on the horse, we have to sign you in and fit a helmet, and run through a 5-minute safety/instructional demo - so if the rest of the group is mounted and ready to go, it’s not fair to make them wait.

We have a busy daily schedule with several tours departing, as well as stable chores, feeding, and breaks for our horses and staff - so to keep things running smoothly, we ask that you are at the stable and dressed ready to ride 15 minutes before departure.

The weather is bad! Is the tour still running?

Icelandic horses are used to rain and wind, so unless the conditions are very stormy and unsafe, we normally do still operate tours in the rain. Please come dressed appropriately!

If you are unsure whether the tour is still running because of bad weather, please get in touch with us via phone or e-mail. The weather can change very quickly, so sometimes it’s not possible to say whether the tour will run or not until very close to the departure time. If you are making a special trip just to visit us (e.g. from Reykjavík) then please get in touch in good time to see what your options are. It is also a good idea to check safetravel.is and road.is before you start a journey in Iceland.

What should I wear?

Practical clothing similar to what you might wear on a hike, according to the weather on the day. Hiking boots or trainers are ideal footwear. You can wear a hat or headband under the helmet if it is cold, but bulky hats with big bobbles or pompoms may not fit (a tube scarf/neckwarmer like a Buff is ideal). It rains a lot in Iceland so it is good to be prepared with raingear, but please avoid ponchos or big, flappy coats that may scare the horses!

Is there a weight limit?

With the welfare and longevity of our horses in mind, we have a weight limit of 100 kg (220 lbs). This is the absolute limit for our largest and strongest horses; the majority of our horses can comfortably carry 70-90kg. There is only one breed of horse in Iceland and they are a bit smaller than other horses, so unfortunately we cannot accommodate riders larger than this.

Am I physically capable of joining the tours?

Our tour is an easygoing one-hour ride, but we require all participants to be physically fit enough to mount independently, sit up and balance while riding along, hold the reins, and follow the guides’ instructions to control their horses. We get on the horses from the ground as this is how they are trained in Iceland (not to stand with a stool/mounting block).

Horseback riding mainly causes pressure on hips and knees. If you have medical conditions in these areas, or for example have had a recent knee/hip replacement, mounting will be difficult and riding may feel uncomfortable. If you need special assistance such as somebody leading you on your horse, please get in touch before booking. On our 30-minute family tour we are able to provide extra assistance more easily.

Please note that horseback riding during pregnancy is very risky and that we, therefore, reserve the right to exclude riders from our tours in case of pregnancy or severe physical impairment.

Is the Family Tour also on the beach or just round the stable?

This tour also goes to the black sand beach; our stable is only 100m from the beach so even on the shorter tour we can still go there! It is just a shorter route, and children are on lead reins so that guides can give extra support. Of course, just like with our 1-hour tour there is sometimes a chance with weather/tides we cannot get on the beach, but we will be in touch with anyone who has pre-booked about this if necessary.

What is your policy for rescheduling bookings?

We are happy to try and reschedule you until 48 hours before your original departure time, subject to availability and to our  Terms and Conditions .

Can I choose which horse I ride?

Just like people, all horses are different. We know our horses well and whether they are suitable for beginner or experienced riders, so it is best for the guides to choose a horse for you. It’s great if when booking you can let us know the experience levels of everyone in your group so that we can prepare suitable horses.

Can I bring my Backpack / GoPro / Drone / Camera on the ride?

We advise against bringing too much with you on the ride. Backpacks can get uncomfortable or affect your balance, as can large DSLR-type cameras. It´s fine to bring a GoPro if you have a suitable mount (helmet or chest) but as you need both hands on the reins, we advise against the stick type mounts. Drones are also not allowed, as they can scare the horses, and also you need full attention on your horse rather than flying your drone!

It's a good idea though to bring a small camera or phone in a zipped pocket, as we make sure to stop on the beach for the guides to take some photos of you. We have some lockers at the stable where you can leave your bags and cameras if you do not have a car to lock them in.

My child is under your age limit. Can they still join the tour?

Please be aware that we never let children/babies ride on the same horse as an adult.

We may sometimes allow 9-year-olds to join the 1-hour tour if they have a good level of riding experience (e.g. regular riding lessons, not just a few trail rides) and are confident riding in a group. Please  email us  before booking to discuss this.

From experience, we find that children under 10 can be a bit more easily distracted or less focused, and more easily overwhelmed by a new activity. Even for children who have a lot of riding experience, being on a new horse in a new environment - and with instructions in a language they maybe do not understand - can be a lot of pressure.

For the 1 hour Black Beach Riding Tour, we ride in groups of up to 10 people and everyone is in control of their own horse (no lead reins and guides are also mounted). We ride on an open public beach and need to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the group as a whole. For groups with children younger than 10 years, in the summer months, we offer a 30-minute Family Tour daily at 16:00 - on this ride, guides are walking with the children on a lead rein to be able to provide closer assistance for our youngest guests.

Do you do tours for longer than one hour?

At the moment, we only offer the regular 50-60 minute tour and the 30-minute family tour.

Can you take bigger groups?

If you have a larger group and the booking calendar does not have enough spaces, please get in touch with your requirements and we will try to accommodate you. It is best if you can let us know well in advance so that we can make sure we have enough horses and guides ready for you.

Can we do a private tour?

Yes! Private tours enable you to have a tour tailored to your wishes and abilities and are ideal for more experienced riders. We will ride according to the abilities of the least experienced rider of the private group. Please note though that even if riders are experienced we can't guarantee canter/gallop on the beach, as the beach conditions change daily, and it is often too soft or too rocky to go fast. We do have a slightly different route to the normal tour that we can possibly use to try more tölt, it is still 1 hour long though. Please get in touch with the weight/riding experience of everyone in your group to arrange a time for a private tour and find out prices.

I am an experienced rider. Will I get to go fast?

Experienced riders are very welcome to join our tours. However, please note that our groups are normally mixed ability and we adjust to the speed of the least experienced rider for safety reasons - this means the speed is normally walking for the majority of the tour. We always do our best to make sure that everyone can try some tölt on the tour and to accommodate more experienced riders, but this will be at the discretion of your guides on the day. Please note that the 30-minute family tour is only ever walking.

I would like to gallop on the beach! Can I do this on your tour?

It is very unlikely that you will be able to gallop on a tour with us. The beach conditions change with the tides and storms, but it is normally very rocky and soft so unsuitable for going fast. Our guides are experienced at assessing riding ability and the potential risks of speeding up. They are best qualified to make this decision on our tours, with the safety and enjoyment of the group as a whole and the welfare of our horses in mind. Please respect our guides’ instructions during the tour and accept that it is unlikely they will offer you a chance to go faster than trot/tölt.

Can we visit the plane wreck?

The plane wreck on Sólheimasandur is around 30 km away on a different beach, so we do not visit it on our tours. It is around a 30-minute drive from Vik, and then a 4 km walk each way from the car park.

Can we see the basalt columns and the Hálsanefshellir cave on Reynisfjara?

We operate our tours from Víkurfjara, the black sand beach located directly in Vík. Reynisfjara, the basalt columns and Hálsanefshellir cave are on the other side of Mt. Reynisfjall, so we cannot reach them on the tour. Reynisfjara is just a 10 minutes’ drive from Vík, which makes it the perfect destination to visit before or after your ride.

Can children/minors join a ride without an adult?

Children or teenagers are welcome to join the rides without an adult (subject to our minimum age restrictions) as long as they are confident controlling a horse independently and are able to understand our instructions in English. Our guides speak a variety of languages but we cannot guarantee which guides are working on which tour.

How to get there

The meeting point is directly at our stable on Smiðjuvegur 6 in Vík. Please be careful with SatNavs! The location of our stable on Google Maps is in the correct place (Vík Horse Adventure, 63.416699, -18.996465), but some SatNavs try to lead you down a steep gravel bank from the nearby roundabout where you will get stuck. Access is through the Orkan petrol station, opposite Hotel Kría - turn into the petrol station and then turn right and you will find us.

Tour Description

Here, you can find a detailed step-by-step explanation of the tour and what to expect.

Your adventure to the Katla Ice Cave begins in Vik at our meeting point, "Troll Expeditions Katla Ice Cave". Please make sure to be there 20 minutes prior to the departure time; if you are wondering where to park your car, there is a free parking lot at our meeting point, right outside of "The Soup Company" restaurant, the same place where you will see our 4x4 super jeeps marked with the "Troll Expeditions" logo. Our amazing guides will also be there, welcoming you and checking you in upon arrival: please make sure to have a copy of your voucher ready on your phone to make the process efficient and smooth. If you need to rent any extras (such as waterproof clothing or hiking boots), or if you have already booked them in advance, this is the time for you to inform and remind your guide about it before it is too late!

When departure time has arrived, you will step on our Super jeep and take a seat with your fellow adventurous companions: make sure to fasten your seatbelt! Off we go for a bumpy ride into the outstanding wilderness! The ride on the super jeep lasts about 40minutes: on the way, your guide will share with you interesting stories about the Katla volcano (located underneath the massive Myrdalsjökull icecap we will be exploring once inside the ice cave), its destructive eruptions and irreversible consequences, as well as tales and facts related to this fascinating and remote area in the South of Iceland.

Unfasten your seatbelt and jump off the super jeep: time for you to stamp your feet onto the black desert of ashes from the legendary Katla volcano eruptions!  The hike towards the ice cave through the "black-sand desert" takes about 20 minutes: this is an easy hike on a quite even path; keep in mind that the sand is unstable, which makes the walk a bit slower and more demanding since your feet will be gently "digging" into it. The views on the way are breathtaking: mossy green mountains rising impressively from the coal-black volcanic desert... blue glaciers scratched by layers of black ashes, testament of eruptions from other ages, standing majestically from afar... pearl-gray glacier rivers forking all over throughout the desert... You will feel like you landed on a different planet!

In the blink of an eye, you will finally be standing right in front of the most beautiful and remote natural ice cave in Iceland that has been discovered in the past decade: the Katla ice cave! Take a few minutes break here and receive all the safety gear needed before accessing the ice cave: our guide will provide you with crampons, helmets, and a safety briefing in order for you to know how to proceed safely inside the cave. Please pay attention to your guide's advice, and remember that it is your responsibility to watch out and mind your steps when you visit the ice cave.

Gears are on, minds and souls blasted by excitement, eyes still full of expectations... hope you kept some space in your sight for more wonders, since the best of the tour is just about to come! Ready to access the majestic glacier ice cave? To get inside the cave, you will at this point, stomp your feet on the glacier ice for the first time: we will start by ascending a tiny little slope. Nothing difficult you need to be worried about; your guide will ask you to get ready to walk in a line, so make sure to follow the guide's steps. Your sight will be delighted by the unique view of the Katla ice cave as you reach up the glacier hill: you will then be making your way through the cave, exploring its fascinating colors and shapes, crossing small bridges to get from one side to the other one... two eyes will probably not be enough to photograph in your mind all beauty of such magnificent scenic views! Your guide will give you the time needed for you to take pictures or take some for you if help is needed, or just the time you need to enjoy the natural sounds from glacier rivers in such a mind-blowing landscape.

Once the exploration has finished, we will start making our way back to the meeting point in Vik, where we will meet you upon arrival: your guide will guide you back to the super jeep (again about 15/20 minutes hike), the same way as you did on the way to the cave; you will have about 40 minutes-ride on the way back to Vik, relax, and allow your mind to assimilate and slowly go through all the mix of emotions and memories we Troll Expeditions team were able to create for you on this surreal adventure to the Katla volcano ice cave!

Exciting Katla Ice Cave Tour with Pick Up from Vik

vik iceland tours

Description

Come along and experience the extraordinary beauty of an authentic Ice Cave with this super jeep tour to the 'Secret Ice Cave' in Mýrdalsjökull glacier. Those travelling the South Coast and want to add a once-in-a-lifetime trip to their winter holiday should not let this opportunity pass them by.

You'll meet your guide in the picturesque village of Vík, where you'll step inside a large vehicle known as a super jeep and begin your tour with a 30-minute drive through the barren wasteland of Mýrdalssandur desert. You'll travel along an old dirt track only accessible with the heavily modified super jeep which is specially built to handle the rough Icelandic terrain.

Your local guide has years of experience in the Icelandic nature and can tell you everything you need to know about the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, the volcano Katla, and their surroundings, as well as fascinating stories from the nearby area while you enjoy the impressive views out the car's window.

Journeying inside the cave, known locally as 'The Secret Ice Cave', you will have the chance to see the beautifully coloured layers of the high ice walls that make up the cave, and see first hand how centuries of glacial water trickling through the 800-year-old ice can carve such a spectacular cavern.

The scene is spectacular. You will see the fresh water dripping all around, and feel the cold and crisp mountain air in your lungs. Surrounding you is nothing but the white, untouched glacier, blackened at places from past volcanic eruptions.

Don't miss out on witnessing the magical world inside an ice cave. Book now to experience this one of a kind tour accompanied by a local guide! Check availability by choosing a date.

Thats good feedback that I had already though about so its good to hear you had the same opinion. Does it seem to you that we are doing too much or too little with our time?

I hope you have lodging booked, many places have been sold out for months,

I too would swap the first and last days.

I would keep the whale watching. You may very well see Orcas, which you would not see on the east coast of the US.

Otherwise it looks pretty good and not too packed each day:)

I do have my hotels booked and it was not easy to piece that together. Thanks for your feedback.

I'm also on the fence about the blue lagoon. I'd much rather go to Sky Lagoon but unfortunately thats not an option for us.

You can easily wait and see with Blue and cancel, I think it is 24 hours ahead? Or the other places I mentioned are still great!

(There are also some gardens and a small zoo nearby. My daughter loved the Arctic foxes.)

Also, near Vik , you may want to stop at Dyrholaey Arch, to look for puffins. And my kids really liked the Lava Show, which we saw in Vik but I believe they are also now in Reykjavik . Their favourite hike was the Reykjaladur hot river hike, and they also really liked the geothermal sites of the Reykjanes peninsula, notably Gunnuhver and Krysuvik/Seltun.

Thank you. These are great suggestions
