TRIP OVERVIEW

It was a cool winter Saturday evening when I decided to break free from the work place and the buzzing traffic. A Solo trip to Hampi couple of weeks earlier compelled me to go for another solo trip. This time I had chosen Badami which was around 3-4 hrs from my work place i.e. Hubli. So as soon as I finished my work I rushed to my room, grabbed my backpack and Camera and reached Hubli KSRTC busstand at 4.45pm. After waiting for 45 min at bus stand at around 5.30 PM I got on to Bagalkot bus that was going via Badami.

I reached Badami at around 8.45pm. Badami is a little backward area and the roads were bad. Fortunately I found a good hotel just opposite to Badami bus stand i.e. Mookambika Hotel but since there were no single occupancy rooms I was forced to go for a double bed room (1050/-).

As of now my plan was just to visit Badami the next day i.e.Sunday and head back to Hubli, but I thought a lot at night and didn’t want to miss another renowned UNESCO world heritage site, Pattadakallu very near to it. So I decided to even visit that place. But I had kept Aihole away from my head as I just had one day to spend. Aihole had just one famous monument i.e. Durga temple so I skipped it deliberately due to the time contraint.

As it was cloudy and drizzling that night, I had no intention to wake up early the next day and hunt for some sunrise points. So I woke up late at 7.30 a.m, had breakfast in a pretty decent restaurant nearby and headed towards Bhoothanatha temple.

Bhootnath Temple

This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and it is carved out of sandstone that is situated on the eastern side of Agastya tirtha or Agastya lake. The temple is built in the style of early Eastern Chalukyas that is a blend of North Indian and early south Indian architectural styles. This temple is one of the major attractions of Badami and you just cannot miss it if you are visiting Karnataka . I took an hour to tour the complete temple and its surroundings which was completely mesmerizing.

On the other end of the lake I visited the rock cut shrines or Cave temples of Badami dating back to 6th century A.D by passing through a small street that connects Agastya lake to cave temples and later by climbing up some 50 steps.

Badami Cave Temples

Badami cave temples enclose brilliant carvings with sculptures of Gods (Shiva & Vishnu) from the Hindu Mythology and of Lord Mahavira. There are a total of 4 cave temples and each cave consists of a sanctum, a hall, a verandah and pillars. Beautiful carvings and exquisite sculptures adore the site. I spent some valuable time in these caves and moved on to explore Malagitti Shivalaya temple which was nearby the cave temples.

Malagitti Shivalaya Temple:

It was built on another small rock mountain in Dravidian style which clearly tells that it was built much later. The temple exterior is beautifully decorated with the figures of gods and animals. As this place was least visited by the tourists I spent an hour here in solitude enjoying the grand view of the surroundings this place offered.

It was around 2pm when I decided to climb down from the temple. Later I had the local cuisine Jollad Rotti , Chatni and Brinjal palya for the lunch in a Khanawali(Hotel) which tasted heavenly. Then I took a Ksrtc city bus from Badami busstand to Pattadakal at around 2.30pm.

Badami was the capital of Chalukya rulers during 6-7th century A.D. These rulers started building temples by carving out the rock mountains at Badami in the beginning, later they experimented the temple construction at Aihole(so called as the cradle of Indian architecture) where we could see the pre-mature architectural style temples, later they started building more matured temples in different styles (Dravida, Nagara etc) at Pattadakallu, where the royal coronation of almost 70 chalukya rulers occured. So it’s obvious that this place was kept very sacred and it was their second capital. The monuments at Badami and Pattadakal are well maintained by Archeological Survey of India.

It was already 5pm so due to the time constraint and as decided earlier I skipped Aihole half heartedly. After waiting for an hour I got a govt bus in which I returned to Badami. I checked out my room at Badami around 6PM and started my return journey to Hubli.

Nearby tourist spots: 1) Durga temple & Ladkhan temple Aihole. 32Km from Badami 2) Kudalasangama, confluence of Krishna & Malaprabha rivers. 70km from Badami.

10 Places to Visit in Hubli

An offbeat tourist spot- this phrase does have an appeal, doesn’t it? Well, as much as we like exploring famous tourist spots, there are times when our hearts desire secluded spots that have not been explored before! Talking about an offbeat destination, today we welcome you to Hubli, or as called before, Hubli, a little city that is a must-add to any Karnataka travel guide !

This city is known for being a mesmerizing abode of beautiful natural landscapes, historical monuments and spiritual places. And that makes it a fantastic city that is slowly but steadily gaining popularity among travelers. Although there are countless places to explore in Hubli, we've curated a list of the 10 best places that you can visit when you are here.

So, while you book your flight to Hubli , go through this list and get your sightseeing plans sorted!

Siddharoodha Math

Hindu guru and philosopher, Siddharudha Swami left his home at a young age and spent his life serving people, irrespective of their religions. The Siddharoodha Math in Hubli was built in his memory. So, what better way to start your Hubli sightseeing trip than a visit to this Math! The moment you reach here, you will feel the deep devotion around this place and you will understand why people visit this place in large numbers every day. You can offer your prayers or simply sit here for a few minutes in peace. Other than the spiritual aura, what will definitely catch your attention is the simple exterior as well as the detailed, colourful interior of the Math.

Unkal Lake

Our next destination is this beautiful lake nestled in the outskirts of Hubli. The reason we are insisting you visit this place is the mesmerizing views you will get to see here. And we also insist that you go boating here, preferably during the sunset. Because, first of all, the lake and its surroundings in the red shades of sunset become surreal. Secondly, it will be very romantic (no doubt this lake is one of the best places to visit in Hubli for couples). And thirdly, you will get to see Swami Vivekananda’s statue, placed right in the middle of the lake, up close. Further enhancing the lake’s beauty is the many varieties of birds you can spot here. After boating and bird watching, if you feel hungry, the food stalls near the lake will take care of it!

Nrupatunga Hill

Nrupatunga Hill

If you are visiting Unkal Lake, you must add Nrupatunga Hill to your sightseeing list as well. Because it is located right in the lake! In fact, the lake and this hillock will be the perfect places near Hubli for a one-day trip. Similar to the lake, this hillock has alluring views! Along with the views, what makes this hillock a crowd favourite is its serenity! This hill is away from the hustle and bustle of the city. And that means people can spend some time in complete tranquillity! Already tempted to visit this place. So are we!

Chandramouleshwara Temple

Chandramouleshwara Temple

Yet another spot on our list is located near Unkal lake. Well, this 900-year-old structure definitely has many stories to tell you. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this temple has two lingas and four doors in different directions. Many devotees pay visits to this temple, obviously due to its religious value. But what attracts many architecture lovers is the monument’s architecture dating back to the Badami Chalukyan era and the excellent carvings all over the monument.

Indira Gandhi Glass House Garden

Indira Gandhi Glass House Garden

A well-maintained, landscaped garden with a glasshouse in the center! We know you must be imagining Bangalore’s Lalbagh glasshouse. But we are not talking about that! We are talking about the Indira Gandhi Glasshouse Garden in Hubli, which is actually a replica of the one in Bangalore. Much like the Lalbagh glasshouse, this glasshouse is beautiful to look at and has a wide variety of plants. Apart from the plants, a toy train and beautiful sculptures are also there! Another thing that you must not miss here is the musical fountain show. It is quite entertaining!

Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle

Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle

Kittur Rani Chennamma Circle is a well-known landmark and one of Hubli famous places that you must go to. The statue of Rani Chennamma, who fought Britishers alone, is the main attraction here. Thousands of people flock to this location to pay their respects to the queen and you can too! After that, you can visit the various food stalls and restaurants around the circle and enjoy a delicious supper.

St. Joseph Church

Where are we going next? The most beautiful church in Hubli, St. Joseph Church! This catholic church is beautifully lit and decorated with flowers. When you visit the church, you will be greeted with much tranquillity that will calm your mind in seconds. Nonetheless, the most interesting thing about this church is its round shape, which we generally don’t see in any other church!

Gayatri Tapovan

A perfect blend of culture and spirituality awaits you at this one of the most famous places to see in Hubli. Sri Kumar Swamiji, a famous preacher, built this temple in 1965 and after his demise, his followers maintained it. And now, the Tapovan has become one of the most important pilgrimages in the city. And the many cultural events organized here have gained quite a huge popularity as well!

Country Club Water World

Country Club Water World, located on Karwar Road, is one of Hubli's most popular tourist attractions. The tranquil ambience, mountains covered in lush foliage and the long palm trees that surround the park are the major highlights here. Also, since it is located outside of the city, this location is a popular weekend vacation spot for families. So come here, swim in the pool and allow the waves to wash away your concerns and give you a jolt of energy or dance to the beat of the DJ's music while enjoying the rain.

Urban Oasis Mall

Whenever we are on a trip, shopping becomes a must! For shopping in Hubli, Urban Oasis Mall is the place to be! It is a huge mall, which means it is always crowded. You will find a large choice of shops that are loaded with things, ranging from clothing to footwear. In addition, there is a separate eatery where you can have a delectable meal.

Travel stories (Told differently)

A Grand Road trip of 3400 Kms and Scenic Drives of Karnataka

Posted on August 19, 2016 by Divsi by Divsi

one day trip in karnataka from hubli

I love road trips.

The changing contours of the sky, with cotton-like clouds leading the way. Fields acting like stoic companions throughout, though the vegetation keeps changing every few miles.

Its thrilling and tiring and arduous and adventurous and a treat to the eyes and therapeutic and more.

So with one week in hand, one Innova and 3400 kms (that was the final count, totally unplanned), we were off to explore Karnataka by road from Mumbai.

I looked at the Map online. It seemed an effortless journey. A smooth, no-fuss NH 4 sprawling from Mumbai to Bangalore. The plan had everything: comfort, pre-booked hotels,   great roads, timely arrivals.

BUT what is a road trip without last minute changes and deviations and cancellations and frantic phone calls and last minute recommendations from a superb fellow travel blogger?

So on Shrinidhi Hande’s suggestion, a few last minute changes were made and the route was diverted from NH 4 to the much more scenic, much narrower and winding state highways of this gorgeous state of Karnataka.

The new route of the 3400 kms journey (some of it planned, some totally impromptu) mapped as follows:

Mumbai- Hubli- Jog falls- Shimoga- Chikmaglur- Belur- Halebidu- Madikeri – Mysore- Bangalore- Tirupati – Horsley Hills- Lepakshi – Bangalore- Kolhapur -Mumbai

The trip had everything: from picturesque views, to lush green fields, to rural houses scattered into the distance.

From archaeological wonders, temple ruins and historic temples to rocky mountains and fragrant forests. From palaces of a lost Kingdom and   different variants of Sambhar and Rasam as we travelled from the north of Karnataka to the south.

The first in this series, this post is about the magnificent roads of Karnataka, giving you every reason to drive this stretch during the monsoons for the views it offers.

From Mumbai to Hubli, the drive is a highway drive. Lush green during the rains, 4 laned , extremely comfortable, with the Western ghats and windmills of Satara for company.

It is from Hubli that you bid goodbye to the comforts of the NH and nature welcomes you with open arms.

The journey from Hubli to Jog falls is through Sirsi, a small hamlet nestled in the heart of the Western ghats. The journey is through dense forests and the road is a single lane but extremely well maintained up to Siddhapur.

Throughout the journey to Jog falls, you see thick plantations of areca nut and paddy fields. After Siddhapur, as you are closer to the falls,   the road is a tad bit bumpy.

Jog Falls are the second highest falls in India and the splendor needs to be seen to be believed.

1. Visit ONLY after considerable rains to see the falls in their full glory and when there is a fog prevalent for excellent photo ops.

2.   There are 1000 steps to the base of the falls. Make sure you climb down at least 150 for a better view.

3. The gate to go down opens mostly after 10 AM. On some days it opens at 9.30 AM.

4. Once you are near Jog falls, there are two entrances: One is an old entrance which is actually the backside. There are absolutely no railings and this is a secluded area.

Make sure you enter the front side of the falls via a huge complex, which is a few KMs away.

5. Photo enthusiasts: Please carry your tripod for some slow shutter shots!

Post the visit to the falls, the scenic drive continued. Shimoga was bypassed and as the distance to Chikmaglur decreased, the countryside was akin a picture postcard.

Winding roads overlooked green pastures for a few kms and then the view simply vanished!

Because now we were enveloped in coffee plantations! Chikamaglur is the Coffee capital of Karnataka and the next 30 minutes (before the actual town arrived), we whizzed by the dense coffee plantations with pepper wrapped around the trees in abundance.

The place is an ideal retreat for nature lovers. A sign board reads Mullayanagiri : 13 Kms.

It is a very tough choice. The journey ahead is long and tiring. Temples of Belur and Halebidu need to be covered as well. But then you cannot really see ‘everything’, no matter how close you are to ‘everything’.

Just a small coffee break in this small paradise. No, I definitely haven’t seen Chikamaglur. But then I have seen a place I know I will return to. For its dark, surreal views with sunlight barely filtering in.   For its mountains colored in various shades of green and for its ‘Kaapi’ like no other.

This day was insanely hectic, yet beautiful and still not over. Belur-Halebidu temples just 25 Km from Chikmaglur require ample of time for exploration and are totally worth it.   After Belur we were on the road again, back to intermittent network and gorgeous views.

The distance from Belur to Madikeri (coorg) is 123 km.

It is almost dusk. Coffee estates on either side of the curvy roads.

The jungle is mesmerizing. With the cacophony of birds outside, I sit with windows rolled down, taking in the sights and the sounds of the forest.

It was fragrant and refreshing.   The forest can appease the senses in ways we cannot imagine. With the scents of sandalwood wafting through my window, I wonder if anything else could be more therapeutic, as an eventful day on the road comes to an end.

Distance covered in day one: Hubli- Madikeri : 506 kms.
