Inside Tom Cruise's Daughter Suri's Life at 16 after Claims That He Did Not See Her for 6 Years

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise were the "It couple" when they were married years ago. The couple welcomed their daughter, Suri, and the "Mission Impossible" actor was a present father before things changed.

The press accused him of abandoning his daughter, and he sued a couple of them for making false claims. Tom Cruise's little girl is now a teenager, and they have rarely been spotted together, as she resides with her mom in New York City.

Despite the claims of the strained relationship between father and daughter, Suri, who recently turned 16, has a flourishing relationship with her mother.

Holmes and Tom got married on November 18, 2006, but they met in 2005 and went public with their relationship when they toured Italy together.

Like every other girl, she had dreams of marrying Tom, and her dreams came to pass. Two months after they started dating, they were ready to settle down and announced their engagement.

They followed their engagement with the news that they had a baby on the way. Tom and Holmes often talked about their daughter, Suri Cruise, who turned 16 in April 2022. Here are more details about their relationship and Suri's life now.

TOM CRUISE AND HIS DAUGHTER'S RELATIONSHIP BEFORE HIS DIVORCE FROM KATIE HOLMES

In 2012, Holmes and Tom divorced, and some fans were surprised. Before their divorce, Tom was highly involved in Suri's life. He said :

"My whole life, I always wanted to be a father."

He was never the type of father who believed that one could spoil a child with too much love. The actor acknowledged that giving a child too much love was impossible.

Tom wanted his adopted children from his relationship with Nicole Kidman and Suri to have a close relationship. The actor said :

"I always said to myself that my children would be able to depend on me, and I would always be there for them and love them—that I'd never make a promise to my kids that I couldn't keep."

He relished his relationship with his daughter, and she was happy to tag along with her dad as they shared an affectionate bond. In an interview, Tom called Suri a joy worth celebrating, despite the bad times.

INSIDE THE ACTOR'S RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS DAUGHTER SURI TODAY

During the custody battle between Holmes and Tom, the actor confirmed in court that he only saw Suri for ten days between June 18, 2012, and Thanksgiving in 2012, meaning he did not see her for more than 100 days. An insider said :

"Tom never intended to be estranged from his daughter when he decided to have a family with Katie and looks forward to repairing the relationship one day."

Three years after their divorce, the actor sued two US magazines that claimed he "abandoned" his daughter Suri and didn't see her for 801 days.

The times were challenging for Tom and Suri. However, an insider shared that he always loved and thought about her even as she became a teenager. Samantha Domingo, a former Scientologist follower, said :

"Members of the Church are big believers in reincarnation, she says, so their viewpoint is that "Suri's not really his daughter — she's just a spiritual being in his daughter's body."

Domingo claimed the "Top Gun" star did not see his daughter for six years because his religion forbade it as Suri is not a devoted member.

The former member also claimed that he probably did it for a photo op to avoid criticism when the press sighted Tom with Suri. However, a spokeswoman for the church vehemently denied all of Domingo's allegations.

During the custody battle, Tom said there was no need to protect his daughter from his religion, and despite not seeing her, they spoke regularly over the phone.

KATIE HOLMES' RELATIONSHIP WITH HER DAUGHTER IS THRIVING

One month after Holmes filed for divorce, she won primary custody of Suri, and years later, their relationship has flourished, with both of them closer than ever. Holmes said :

"I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able."

Holmes and Suri are almost always together and have attended several Hollywood events in each other's company. However, Holmes rarely offers details about her daughter's life to the public.

Nonetheless, in an interview in 2019, Holmes revealed that she loved growing up with Suri. She said :

"I was happy to become a mum in my twenties... It's been nice that our ages fit…"

As they grew older, she said their age difference had always been a good match. The mother and daughter duo have enjoyed things like shopping and going for walks together as they are incredibly close.

However, when Suri was younger, Holmes avoided going out because of the press, and she said :

"But there's one video where I'm holding her — she was 2 at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras. She's pretty special."

Holmes, who tries to be a fitness role model to her daughter, is also excited to set excellent examples for Suri without becoming too obsessed with trends.

On April 18, 2022, Suri turned 16, but her mom did not celebrate her birthday on her social media even though she celebrated Suri's 15th birthday on her Instagram. However, Holmes is proud of her daughter. She said :

"She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, "OK, I'm going to try the next thing." She's very focused and a hard worker."

The excited mom loves how her daughter has matured and has her unique personality. Holmes and Suri share the same style, especially regarding their apartment.

Holmes revealed that she loves vintage art from flea markets and because they both wanted a cozy and soft apartment, they opted for a lot of colors to soften the intensity and hardness of the city around them.

A close source revealed that Holmes and Suri are more in sync as they get older and are a real team because their connection is beautiful.

Suri grew up to be an accomplished teenager. She started taking ballet lessons as a child and briefly studied guitar. Another source revealed that she is a talented athlete well-liked by her close friends. The source said :

"Suri is very naturally athletic and excels at physical activities like gymnastics and dance."

Suri, who is almost as tall as Holmes , attended an elite private school in Manhattan and even adopted a puppy in early 2022. She loves shopping and Broadway shows and has all the access to her favorite Broadway shows.

Months before Tom Cruise made Katie Holmes wife No. 3, they welcomed their only child, Suri Cruise, in April 2006. Six years later in 2012, Katie left Tom and secured primary custody of their daughter in the divorce. Since then, the "Dawson's Creek" alum has raised their daughter mostly in New York City.

Katie Holmes gives rare interview about 16-year-old daughter Suri Cruise

Katie holmes has started working with her daughter on film projects.

After years of being plagued by paparazzi Katie Holmes decided to keep her daughter, Suri Cruise, out of the spotlight.

But now that her daughter is 16 and starting to come into her own, Katie is slowly starting to speak about Suri in interviews again - and even enlisting her help in her film projects.

The Dawson's Creek star welcomed Suri with Tom Cruise back in 2006, but the couple parted ways just six years later.

Speaking about how protective she feels over her daughter, Katie told Glamour: "What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her.

"I'm very grateful to be a parent, to be her parent. She's an incredible person."

Katie also spoke about how Suri has slowly started getting involved in her mum's work.

For example, in the 2022 film Alone Together , which Katie wrote, directed and starred in, she asked her daughter to sing a cover of the song 'Blue Moon' for the opening credits.

Next, she'll sing for Katie's upcoming movie Rare Objects .

"I hope she always does something on my films. I always ask her," Katie shared.

She explained that asking Suri to sing in her films 'came out of the same sense of what [she loves] about the industry' - the fact that the people you work with on-set become a family, and that it can be a 'safe, beautiful, creative space'.

"So it comes out of love for me to include someone who I love dearly," she continued.

"I like to have that kind of feeling. It was very meaningful to me to have her there, because she's my heart."

Last month, Katie also briefly mentioned her teen daughter in an interview with Variety, revealing that she had finally shown Suri Dawson's Creek.

"She has seen Dawson's Creek, and I think it's probably weird since she's a teenager," Katie said at the time.

"I'm not like, 'You need to watch Mommy's work'. But during the pandemic, we had a good laugh about it."

She noted that it was pretty 'wild' to have a daughter who was 'almost the same age' as she was when she started her acting career.

Katie made her first film debut in 1997, when she was 19 years old, in The Ice Storm .

Within a year, she had landed the role of Joey Potter on Dawson's Creek.

The Hollywood star is incredibly protective of her only child and so didn't mark the occasion on social media, but the pair no doubt had a wonderful day celebrating.

Taking to Instagram, the actress shared that her film, Alone Together, will be shown at this year's Tribeca Film Festival.

Katie Holmes Explains Why She Featured Her 16-Year-Old Daughter, Suri Cruise, in Her New Movie

Katie Holmes was looking for the “highest level of talent” for her COVID-era Airbnb rom-com, Alone Together . That's why she reached out to her very own daughter , 16-year-old Suri Cruise .

Holmes , who wrote, directed, and starred in the film, brought in Suri to record a cover of “Blue Moon” for the opening credits. “I always want the highest level of talent,” Holmes told Yahoo Entertainment . “So I asked her! She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general: It's like, ‘This is what I think we all want—go do your thing.’”

The song holds significant sentimental value for the mother-daughter pair. According to Holmes, she was inspired by Diane Keaton's own rendition of “Blue Moon” for Rob Reiner's 2014 film And So It Goes . “Diane met my daughter when she was a year old,” Holmes told Yahoo.

This isn't the first time Suri has been featured in one of her mother's films. “She actually did sing in Rare Objects , which is the film we did last fall,” the proud mom shared. “Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school.”

Katie Holmes and her former husband Tom Cruise welcomed Suri in 2006; six years later, the Dawson's Creek star was awarded primary custody . “I like to keep her out of my interviews, but I will say that this time of quarantine has been such a lesson,” she said during an interview with The Daily Telegraph back in 2020. “Just really looking at everything you have and celebrating the simplicity of making dinner and [spending] that time together.”

As Suri gets older, it seems Holmes is becoming more comfortable gushing about her daughter to the press. “I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality,” she said in an interview with InStyle . “To make sure she is 100% herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it. Holmes, 43, stars in the newly released movie "Alone Together," and her daughter Suri Cruise , 16, joined her on the big screen.  

"I always want the highest level of talent," Holmes said in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment. "So, I asked her. She's very, very talented. She said she would do it, and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing. That's the way I direct in general. It's like, 'This is what I think we all want — go do your thing.'"

In the movie, Suri sings a cover of "Blue Moon," which plays during the opening credits of the film. Holmes told the outlet this will not be her daughter’s only on-screen singing gig.

"She actually did sing in ‘Rare Objects,’ which is the film we did last fall," Holmes explained. "Other than that, she's a 16-year-old kid doing high school."

Cruise and Holmes were married from 2006 to 2012. Suri is their only child together, and Suri's parents opted to keep her out of the public eye for a majority of her childhood.

Holmes directed, wrote and stars in "Alone Together." She stars alongside Jim Sturgess in the romantic comedy set during the coronavirus pandemic. The film follows a man and woman fleeing New York City during the first wave of the pandemic in 2020.

The pair end up booking the same Airbnb and ultimately decide to stay at the upstate property together.

Sturgess praised Holmes’ directing style and shared that she gives actors wide latitude when they are in front of the camera.

"She gives you this incredible space between action and cut," Sturgess said of his co-star.

The movie is in theaters before moving to video on demand Friday.

Suri Cruise has announced the next big step in her life as she’s set to attend the prestigious Carnegie Mellon University in September.

Suri , 18, the daughter of Hollywood icons Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, revealed the news in a rare TikTok post where she and a group of friends each wore a sweatshirt from their chosen college.

The video, set to the tune of Abbi Sutphen’s Always Remember You, has the caption: ‘LaG commitment day.’

Carnegie Mellon’s School of Design is one of the oldest and most highly ranked programs in the US, and it’s believed the 18-year-old is leaning towards studying fashion .

‘She is a smart girl, and she is turning into a very intelligent mature young woman,’ an insider told the Daily Mail .

‘She has a very close group of loyal friends, and she knows exactly where she comes from.’

Top Gun icon Tom, 61, and Dawson’s Creek’s Katie, 45, welcomed Suri on April 18, 2006, the anniversary of their first date.

Suri is reportedly extremely close to her mum, but it’s believed she hasn’t seen her dad for 11 years .

It’s claimed that the Mission Impossible actor helps his daughter financially, but no longer sees her after he and Katie divorced in 2012 and she left the Church of Scientology.

Tom also has two children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman – Isabella, 31, and Connor, 29 – who he is believed to see regularly and are both members of the Scientology church .

Their divorce settlement stated that the actor agreed to pay his ex-wife $400,000 (£314,200) a year until Suri turned 18, and he will pay for all her college fees.

The agreement states that although he might not see his daughter, he has to cover ‘medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs.’

Around the time of the divorce was the last time Tom was publicly pictured with Suri, taking her to Disney World in 2012.

At the time, a spokesperson said: ‘Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children.’

It’s reported that Tom has not seen Suri in the 10 years since, with the pair being no contact for the last three years.

A source told Heat magazine: ‘Tom is feeling guilty about missing so much of her life, but insists that he hasn’t completely shut Suri out of his life, and does get updates from time to time.’

Katie has not commented on Tom’s relationship with their daughter and has stressed the importance of allowing Suri to maintain her privacy.

The pair, 43 and 16, walked side by side as they appeared to be heading out of town ahead of Labor Day.

The actress donned a red and white shirt with a blue skirt while her only child wore a white tee and blue denim shorts.

The Dawson's Creek alum pulled her brunette hair into a messy topknot as she slung a large blue weekender bag over her shoulder.

Her loose-fitting, short-sleeved Henley t-shirt had a red collar and micro white stripes and she carried a white sweatshirt.

Meanwhile, Suri joined her mother in fashionably distressed jean shorts as she carried a vintage-inspired white leather suitcase. The piece was decorated with two subtle blue and red v-shaped stripes and a clean blue trim.

The teenager, who Holmes recently described as 'very talented,' wore another white bag crossbody-style.

The youngster, whose dad is actor Tom Cruise, wore multiple small earrings and finished her look with a pair of white sneakers.

Katie's latest project is a film called Alone Together, which she starred in addition to writing and directing. 

According to an official synopsis, the plot takes place amid the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, and follows 'two strangers embroiled in bad relationships who wind up in the same upstate New York Airbnb.' 

Suri, had a small part in the project, singing the classic song Blue Moon in the opening credits.

During an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment , the star talked about including her daughter in the movie.

'I always want the highest level of talent,' Katie explained. 'So I asked her! She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it, and I let her do her thing.'

Suri Cruise is thought to be still estranged from her father Tom Cruise as she celebrates her milestone 18th birthday.

The Mission: Impossible star and then-girlfriend Katie Holmes welcomed their first child together in April 2006, but just five years later, the A-list couple had parted ways and were involved in a bitter divorce. Their split was finalised in 2012, and the Dawson’s Creek star was awarded full custody of Suri, with Tom agreeing as part of their hefty divorce settlement that he would pay £321,000 ($400,000) per year in child support to his ex-wife until Suri was 18.

Sadly, the Hollywood action hero has reportedly had little contact with his daughter ever since divorcing Katie, and in a defamation lawsuit against Bauer Media in 2013, Tom admitted he hadn’t seen Suri for three months. “Listen, when there is a divorce… things change,” he said in a deposition. “It’s not an ideal scene. It’s not an ideal situation.”

During the same lawsuit, he also confessed that his link to the controversial Church of Scientology had an impact on why he was estranged from his daughter. When asked by lawyers if Katie had left him “in part to protect Suri from Scientology,” Tom replied: “That was one of the assertions, yes.”

Katie opted to bring Suri up in New York, and the mother-daughter duo are often seen out and about living a normal life away from Hollywood. Back in 2017, she told Town & Country magazine that she took a step back from her career in order to give Suri a stable childhood. “My child is the most important person to me, and her upbringing is paramount to my work right now. It’s very important that I’m present and she has a stable, innocent childhood. I feel so blessed to do what I do, but there’s nothing in the world better than watching your child succeed,” she explained.

While Tom has seen his career go from strength to strength, his relationship with his daughter is reportedly non-existent, and just last year, it was rumoured the Top Gun star hadn’t seen Suri in years, and was not a part of her life. According to the rules of the Church of Scientology, members are forbidden from associating with non-believers, and because neither Katie or Suri were Scientologists, Tom could not have a relationship with them.

In 2020, former Scientologist Leah Remini claimed the religious organisation believes the 61-year-old actor “can’t be connected to Suri”. She told The New York Post: “I’m sure his master plan is to wait until Suri gets older so that he can lure her into Scientology and away from her mother.”

Holmes apparently started converting to Cruise's Church of Scientology even though she was raised Catholic. The actress, 42, put a lot of effort into raising their now teenage daughter in the manner that she desired after divorcing Tom Cruise in 2012. The actor, 57, who still belongs to the Church of Scientology, reportedly does not have a relationship with Suri. 

Katie by 2012 had realized “she no longer had the life she wanted, in terms of her career, her way of life, everything." a source told PEOPLE that Holmes was growing more dissatisfied in her marriage. “It’s clear that Tom can be very persuasive and is very powerful. But once she decided to go, she was done,”, according to an insider who joined other sources in denying rumours that Holmes was concerned for her safety or that Scientology was the main cause of the breakup. Instead, the insider said, “she is the daughter of a lawyer: She knew she had to have everything locked down before she pulled the trigger because there could be no wiggle room if she didn’t want this to turn into a long, drawn-out battle. She wanted this to happen fast, and severing all ties in one fell swoop was the best way for that to happen.” Both Holmes and Cruise have remained tight-lipped about the exact reason for their divorce but sources claim that Cruise was left shocked by Holmes's decision. 

Samantha Domingo, a former Scientologist who left the group in 2004, said to Us Weekly that Cruise is "not allowed" to have a relationship with his adolescent daughter since she is not a Scientologist. The 59-year-old actor and his daughter were last seen together in 2013. However, a Church spokesperson refuted all of Domingo's claims, calling them "fiction." “Every person is allowed to see their child if they wanted to. He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist.” a spokesperson said. 

The mother-daughter team serves as a reminder that not all "families" have to look alike for it to be a happy family for the time being. On April 18th, Holmes shared a photo series on her Instagram in honor of Suri's 15th birthday, writing: Happy 15th Birthday Sweetheart! I love you!!!!!!!! ❤️💕😘 I can’t believe you are already 15! Whether or not the claims that Cruise hasn't seen his daughter in ten years are true, Katie and Suri are a content mother and daughter team. “My biggest goal has always been to nurture [Suri] into her individuality,” Katie told InStyle. "To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it.”

The 17-year-old was seen in New York's Soho while walking with some friends.

Suri is the daughter of actors Tom Cruise , 60, and Katie Holmes , 44.

She was wearing a black tank top and a knee-length denim skirt which gave early 2000s vibes.

She paired it with several silver bracelets and a black string choker necklace that had a large silver flower on it.

On her feet were black sneakers and tall white socks that were scrunched down at her ankles.

In August 2021, Katie and her lookalike daughter turned heads as they stepped out in New York City .

It was hard to miss that her daughter had a striking similarity to her actress mom in the early days of her career.

With her tall frame and long dark locks, the teen looked just like Katie when she starred in Dawson's Creek over 20 years ago.

Katie starred as Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek from 1998 to 2003, joining the show as a fresh-faced 18-year-old.

On their Friday outing, Katie kept it casual in a cream T-shirt tucked into white pants. Suri wore red shorts and cropped tank top.

Enjoying her evening stroll with her only child, Katie affectionately played with her daughter's brunette tresses while they waited for a crosswalk to turn green.

FATHER-DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP

Suri has reportedly not seen  Top Gun  star Tom in more than a decade after her mom divorced him when she was five.

Katie gained sole custody of Suri in 2012, along with a generous settlement that has Tom paying a reported £325,000 a year for his daughter’s care.

After the split, Katie took Suri to New York which was 2,400 miles away from LA -based Tom.

The actor has been accused of putting his religion before his daughter, with ex-Scientologists claiming he has been ordered to shun Katie and Suri as non-believers.

High-profile former church member Samantha Domingo, daughter-in-law of opera singer Placido, spoke about the religion in 2019.

Katie supposedly signed an NDA following her divorce from Tom, which rumors have suggested was fueled by his controversial Scientology believes. Now that the NDA is reportedly expiring, the source claims Katie is interested in writing a memoir to share her side of the story.

“She’s actively looking for roles and is eager to throw herself back into the industry full-time,” the insider claimed. “And don’t forget the non-disclosure agreement she signed — it’s set to expire, too. If things get tough, Katie could cash in by penning a tell-all book!”

Interestingly, the report and subsequent speculation was enough to make Katie respond, even though she’s known for keeping silent on her personal life. The Dawson’s Creek actress simply released a statement via her lawyer denying the recent reports.

"The story is riddled with falsehoods. One would hope there would be more newsworthy items to cover, and publications would avoid reporting as 'facts' claims from anonymous sources peddling such obvious misrepresentations,” her attorney Jonathan W. Wolfe told the media.

Tom – who’s notoriously private about his personal life – hasn’t addressed Suri in interviews in years. However, it’s been reported that the Mission: Impossible actor still plans to financially support Suri when she attends college, though he’ll apparently have no say in where or what she studies.

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ' daughter, Suri Cruise , has lived a sheltered life away from her father's Scientology beliefs and public scrutiny. However, as she turns 18, she faces the decision to either embrace fame or remain private.

According to a Scientology journalist, Suri becoming an adult in New York will also allow her the freedom to speak about her father and the church of Scientology.

Katie Holmes Has 'Safeguarded' Suri Cruise From Public Scrutiny And Scientology

Suri has enjoyed a predominantly sheltered upbringing in Manhattan, shielded from the limelight by her devoted and fiercely protective mother, Holmes.

The teenager has been mostly kept away from her father, Cruise, and his religious organization, the Church of Scientology. According to a source who spoke to Page Six , the "Mission: Impossible" star hasn't seen his daughter since 2012.

"Katie has safeguarded Suri and she's a devoted mom," the source said. "This is a girl who is a private citizen. She hasn't lived her life in public."

With Suri's eighteenth birthday around the corner, questions arise on whether she plans to return to the spotlight or maintain her private life.

At the time of Holmes and Cruise's divorce, the actress was rumored to have signed various non-disclosure agreements, potentially restricting her from discussing her marriage to Cruise and her experiences within the Church of Scientology.

However, Suri, who will attain legal adulthood in New York State as she turns 18, has the freedom to speak openly about her father and his beliefs as she was too young to sign any NDAs during her parent's divorce.

Speaking to the news outlet, Tony Ortega , a seasoned Scientology journalist, shared: "Suri would have been too young to sign any agreement, but she will now be free to talk if she wants to and it's going to be really interesting if she has something to say."

As Cruise is one of Scientology's prominent members, possibly second only to its leader, David Miscavige, Ortega raised questions about potential repercussions that Holmes and Suri could face.

"Regular members who quit are declared 'suppressive persons (SP),' and those who stay in Scientology are told to completely cut them off," he noted. "We don't know for sure if Katie was ever declared an SP."

Ortega added, "If you are a regular church member you could be told to disconnect from your wife and daughter, but because Tom is a celebrity — he's the top celebrity — he gets to ignore all this stuff. Your average member would be kicked out, but David Miscavige can't do that with Tom."

Former Scientologists Mike Rinder and Jeff Augustine echo Ortega's concerns about Scientology's influence on familial relationships and speculate on the treatment of Holmes and Suri within the church.

Augustine told the outlet, "The situation with Suri is a larger story about Scientology and the subject of how they make people no longer useful to them or threats to them non-persons. It's like they cease to exist and that's what happened to Suri."

Rinder particularly emphasized Suri's autonomy, asserting: "Suri is not a Scientologist and never will be…she deserves love and sympathy."

According to Page Six , during a deposition in a legal battle against tabloid magazines in November 2013, Cruise disclosed that Holmes had filed for divorce "to protect Suri from Scientology."

However, despite their estrangement, Cruise, with an estimated fortune of $600 million, committed to providing financial support to Holmes and Suri as per their divorce settlement.

He reportedly agreed to an annual payment of $400,000 until Suri reaches 18, alongside covering various expenses, including "medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular costs."

Holmes also secured sole custody of their daughter, while Cruise retained "meaningful" visitation rights. Yet, public sightings of Cruise with his daughter have dwindled over the years, with sources suggesting Cruise has a diminishing role in Suri's life despite legal arrangements.
