1962 Morris Minor Traveller

David's review, “ a light and running-engine lovely project. ”.

This 1969 Morris Minor Traveller underwent restoration approximately ten years ago by a previous owner before being acquired by the vendor's father in 2016. It remained in use, evident from the MoT history, until late 2018, when it was carefully stored. Despite regular use, the vendor's father acknowledged that some fettling was necessary to restore the Morris to its former glory.

Vehicle Story

The Morris Minor is the quintessential British car, and the Traveller, or ‘Woodie’ as it is fondly known, is the quintessential British estate. These are cars forever gently evocative of church fetes, country lanes with high hedgerows, village cricket, buck-toothed vicars, cucumber sandwiches and pubs where the locals just stare at you until you leave. It’s a uniquely British thing.

Designed, like the original 1948 Minor saloon, by Alec Issigonis, the highly practical Traveller, with its folding back seat and rear doors that could be left open for carrying long loads, was one of the last cars to use a structural wood frame. Launched in 1953, it was deliberately distinguished from the Minor van by being given quality features such as stainless steel door window frames on the longer doors of the two-door saloon – the van using short doors shared with the four-door. It also used the two-door saloon platform rather than the chassis-cab layout of the pick-up and van. The steel roof stopped at the back of the doors, where it was joined to an aluminium rear roof mounted on the structural wood frame, which was bolted to the floorplan and B-posts – inset panels were aluminium too, though the rear wings were still steel.

A particularly clever feature – typical of Issigonis – was that the spare wheel and tools were stored in a separate compartment under the boot floor, revealed on opening the rear doors – so there was no need to disturb luggage in order to change a wheel.

Progressive development saw the Minor engine grow to 1098cc in 1963, with higher gearing that made the car much more capable on the faster roads of today than earlier models. When The Motor tested a 1098cc Traveller just like this in 1965, it concluded it was an ideal vehicle “for the family man with a small business or the businessman with a small family”. The Traveller proved the most enduring version of the Minor, continuing in production for six months after the last saloon was made – the final Traveller being completed in April 1971.

Vehicle Overview

This 1969 Morris Minor Traveller underwent restoration approximately ten years ago by a previous owner before being acquired by the vendor's father in 2016. It remained in use, evident from the MoT history, until late 2018, when it was carefully stored. Despite regular use, the vendor's father acknowledged that some fettling was necessary to restore the Morris to its former glory.

The last MoT test was conducted on the 16th of April 2018. Therefore, a recommissioning is advisable before taking it for a drive, as the vendor is uncertain about the last service or maintenance performed by her father.

The exterior of the Traveller appears to be in good condition, having undergone a minor restoration less than ten years ago; it is finished in what is believed to be Old English White, although this cannot be confirmed. The typical problem areas, such as the wings and doors, seem to be in good order with no signs of major corrosion or blisters. Aside from the usual chips and scratches, there were no major dings or dents noted.

Starting at the front, the grille is in good condition with no damage to the slats, and the chrome trim surround is in good order. The bumper shows some minor age-related tarnishing, but there are no signs of corrosion. The headlights and indicators are free from any damage and have a bright finish. The bonnet has retained the original badge and lift handle, which exhibits a similar amount of tarnishing to match the bumper, consistent with the Traveller’s age. Further up, the chrome hinges have a bright finish, the windscreen appears to be free from any chips or cracks, and the seal looks to be in good order with just a small amount of overspray on the edge.

Looking down the sides, the doors hang well and appear to be level on each side. The windows are all in good order, as are the chrome surrounds, door mirrors, and door handles. Moving on to the unique part of the Traveller, the English Ash wood frame, it appears to be in good condition with no obvious signs of rot. There are some darker areas in the corners, possibly caused by water ingress, but overall, it seems to be in good condition.

At the rear end, the twin Ash-framed doors align well and, like the wood frame, appear to be in good condition. The windows also look to be in good order. The light lenses are free from any splits or cracks, and the quarter bumpers have some minor corrosion that has broken through the chrome finish.

The steel wheels, painted to match the body, exhibit some corrosion, but they shouldn't take much to freshen up. They are finished with the original M hubcaps that are in good order, and a matching set of Nankang tyres are fitted, showing a good amount of remaining tread.

Stepping inside the Traveller transports you straight back to the 60s, where the red leather seats are very well presented in both the front and rear. While there is some slight creasing on the front seats, there's no damage or noticeable wear. The door cards may well be the originals, displaying some signs of age and a small amount of staining, but overall, they are in very good condition with no rips or tears. There are also front and rear seatbelts fitted.

The original three-spoke steering wheel is in good condition, showing only a small amount of age-related wear. Behind it, the metal dashboard remains unmarked, with no chips or dents. The instrument binnacle functions as it should, and the odometer displays a reading of 89,022 miles, which tallies with the MoT history. The toggle switches and heater controls exhibit a slight degree of wear, contributing to the charming patina of this classic British vehicle.

Looking above, the headlining is taut and free from sagging or stains. The red carpets appear to have been replaced and are in excellent condition throughout. Moving to the boot area, the clean and tidy grey finish sets a neat backdrop. Beneath the floor, the spare wheel and jack are present.

History Highlights

The Traveller was registered on the 1st of October 1969 and, as mentioned, is thought to have undergone restoration approximately 10 years ago. A substantial history file accompanies the vehicle, documenting service work conducted and various parts fitted over the years.

Reviewing the MoT history reveals that the car has been consistently in use since 2005 and potentially even earlier, covering an annual mileage ranging from a minimum of 100 to a maximum of 2,500 miles.

What We Think

Overall the Traveller presents well. Yes, there are some areas which need to be addressed, but after all, it is just over 54 years old, so to be expected. It has come from an enthusiast owner who purchased it seven years ago and continued to regularly use and enjoy it.

From the condition, we would say it is an ideal base to take it to the next level or enjoy it for what it is and have some fun; for this reason, we expect the Morris Minor Traveller to fetch in the region of £5,000 - £8,000.

Finance rates as low as 8.9% .

We know that classic car financing can pose a unique challenge. Although a vintage or exotic car can be an excellent investment, some financial institutions attempt to apply standard “used car” rules for financing a classic car, which in many cases can make loan approval difficult.

We work closely with many banking institutions that understand and recognize the collector value of classic cars and view them as an investment, which allows us to help you get the financing you need so that you can have the car you have dreamed of.

1954 Morris Minor Traveller. A very early, rare and simply beautiful example. Film work provenance.

  • PRICE: £Reserved
  • Colour: Green
  • Mileage: 62974 miles
  • Previous Owners: 5
  • Transmission: Manual
  • Engine: 1098cc

VEHICLE OVERVIEW

The Morris Minor Traveller made its debut at the Earls Court Motor Show in October 1953 with customer deliveries commencing early the following year. Based on the Minor 11 model utilising the 803CC overhead valve ‘A’ series engine adopted from the Austin A30, replacing the 918cc side-valve engine from the earlier MM series.

The car was characterised by its split screen configuration, ‘cheese-grater’ front grille and gold coloured dashboard with instrumentation behind the steering wheel. In October 1954, just twelve months after launch, the front grille was replaced, featuring horizontal bars and the dashboard redesigned, placing the instrumentation centrally.

This particular Traveller was first registered in Stockton on the 13 th October 1954 and would be one of the very last ‘cheese grater’ models delivered. With a production run of just twelve months and only seven ’54 models existing today, this really is quite a rarity. We suspect that it was ordered as a Deluxe model, a £23 option featuring leather seat facings, Smiths heater, passenger sun visor and front bumper over riders.

During the first 50 years, the car was kept by four owners in total, the fifth owner keeping the car for almost fourteen years during which time it was assigned to occasional film work, most notably appearing in Miss Marple’s Sleeping Murder TV episode. In 2019, the last owner, a highly skilled Vintage Car restorer of over 40 years treated the car to a comprehensive restoration which took almost two years to complete.

Reassuringly, the complete Ash wood frame was replaced during the restoration and a new 1098cc engine fitted with lead-free compatibility and Duplex timing chain. The engine has barely covered 200 miles since replacement and is silky smooth, the ‘burping’ exhaust note is further exaggerated by the fitment of a stainless steel exhaust system. The semaphore indicators are functioning correctly and have been complimented by rear indicators more suited for modern day driving.

There is an extensive parts list and ‘before and after’ A5 picture album with the car and a DVD featuring the Traveller in Sleeping Murder. For complete peace of mind we shall be conducting a new MOT prior to delivery.

The pictures paint a thousand words and to find another ’54 Traveller in this condition and price point would be a very difficult task.
