Cats The Musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber's legendary musical 'Cats' returns to the West End for a limited run at the London Palladium thanks to popular demand. The musical will star Beverley Knight as Grizabella the glamour cat. The show is based on an unusual poem by T.S Eliot which features a group of felines called the Jellicle Cats. They meet at the annual Jellicle Ball to hear which cat their leader, Old Deuteronomy, has chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn. The original London production ran for 21 years and is one of the most successful and well loved shows in West End history, featuring hits such as 'Macavity: The Mystery Cat', 'Jellicle Song for Jellicle Cats' and the renowned 'Memory'. This iconic musical features a revamped design by John Napier, updated choreography by Gillian Lynne and is directed by Sir Trevor Nunn. Expect the return of the 'Cats' legwarmers, the huge '80s wigs and of course the famous feline catsuits.

What the audience said…

I loved this production, it was my first time ever at a theatre show and it blew me away. Desperate to get my daughter to see this show. Would love to know when it will be back in Britain?

I was at school wen I saw cats in the 80 and I can still remember the show as if it was yesterday I loved the show then got dvd .

A wonderful show. I have seen it at least 45 times. The best musical ever.

Greatest musical I have seen.. I have attended at least 30 times all over England..

Amazing show. Fantastic atmosphere in the London Palladium. The whole cast have such energy. Thoroughly enjoyed myself.

It was absolutely wonderful- having been too young the first time around I was absolutely thrilled when I heard it was coming back to London! I saw it on New Year's Day, the evening performance and whilst Nicole Scherzinger was on holiday, Grizabella was amazing. If this could be passed on to the cast at all, I thought they were absolutely perfect and, a theatre addict, this was one of, if not the, best musical I've ever seen- you kicked my New Year off to the most incredible start, Thank you!

Massively disappointed. If I buy Heinz baked beans, I expect to get Heinz baked beans. There is no reference to this show being revised in the sales literature. We sat there bewildered, and without a clue what was going on. The dancing and singing are marvellous.

100% fantastic apart from "Rum Tum Tugger's" Character being ruined, changing him to MC Hammer.... WHY oh WHY ! did you do that ! Don't fix what's not broken!

I went with my Grandaughter yesterday to see cats, the performance was outstanding. I would like to mention Tommy, disability carer was wonderful, making life much for me, many thank Tommy

Having seen the show over 15 years ago it was a delight to refresh the memory. Was an outstanding show however really did not enjoy the gangster rap. It's very last year and the original was so perfect.

Absolutely brilliant evening, mind blowing Nicole Scherzinger together with a splendid cast, have to say we all thoroughly left the Theatre feeling wonderful.

Expensive tickets purchased so my daughter could see Nicole Scherzinger as Grizabella for her birthday. Pity Nicole chose not to turn up for work that day and was instead posting pictures of her 'great night out' in Austria on Instagram. Think Kerry Ellis will be far more professional.

Purchased tickets for my sister and her husband for Christmas knowing she'd love this as a HUGE Nicole Scherzinger fan but was massively disappointed when she wasn't in the show on Saturday night(31st). She enjoyed the show but it didn't meet her expectations. If stars aren't available on particular dates, this information should be made known as I still paid for full price tickets!!

Andrew Bushrod Thanks Nicole. My wife and I went to London on the back of you performing in the west end show Cats.I spent best part of £1000 to go and watch the show only to be told at the theatre that you basically couldn't be bothered to turn up and we where told that you are ill but in fact you had a better offer to do other things which was very disappointing. Not very professional whatsoever. Must be nice to get on a private jet and swan off to Austria. What about the people who spend their hard earned money to come and see you.

Kerry Ellis was quite simply outstanding (saw show on 31/01/2015 at 2.30. I had goosebumps the whole time. What a great performance from the entire cast. Loved it.

We saw Cats last night. The show was brilliant and we thoroughly enjoyed it despite the disappointment of finding out once inside the theatre that Nicole wasn't to be in it. I was surprised then to read later online that Nicole's grandmother was in town and Nicole was looking forward to her being in the audience last night to watch her perform? But then she didn't! I know you shouldn't go to see one particular person in a show but you could feel everyone's disappointment as we waited to go in. We also felt the understudy had supporters in so was it known in advance that Nicole was not going on? We booked tickets months ago and even then we couldn't get 2 together but the show was worth the money. The cast are amazing, the set breath taking, lighting incredible and I could have listened to the orchestra all night! I just wanted to see Nicole!!!

I saw Cats last night with my family, I had given them tickets as a Christmas gift. We were all really looking forward to watching the performance. The shows itself was good, and the cast were fantastic, Nicole played the part of Grizabella really well. However my family and I felt the theatre staff on this occasion actually let the performance down. For some reason all 'normal' theatre etiquette seemed not to apply to this performance. I appreciate as the show is running for a limited time, and the fact Nicole was playing the lead may have had something to do with this, but I just found it incredibly rude that people were shown to there seats mid performance, making other members of audience move to accommodate late comers. In my experience most West end shows, would not allow people to enter late as to not disrupt the performers and the audience. This went on throughout the performance, people were entering and leaving as they saw fit. I think the staff could have managed the situation better. Unfortunately due to the issues with the late comers, and people entering / leaving throughout it gave a polished production a very amateur feel. Which for us made us not enjoy the performance as much as we should have.

I paid for 4 tickets to take my daughter for an 18th birthday treat, really sorry but we all thought it was random, repetitive and slightly confusing, the show improved in the second act, couldn't fault the cast, NS rendition of Memories was superb, but I would still have liked a refund!

I saw the original production in 1981 but this has been substantially updated, and I was sceptical about it - especially during the first half of the show. But, wow, in the second half something happened and Nicole as Grizabella pulled the cat out of the bag and made the hair stand up on the back of my neck! I cried! The cast were sensational but the orchestra overwhelmed some of them so I couldn't hear all of the words. Nevertheless this was a first rate show from ultimate professionals.

The show is amazing but the venue not, we didn't sit in the best seats f1&f2 upper circle and the view was very disappointing I have since written to the palladium and have had no reply or acknowledgement. Cats is still such a classic! I thought it was fabulous. My only criticism is the rapping cat, I think the point was to update the show with his song but it actually made it seem dated.

Great dancing and music, wasn't overly keen on the group singing found it hard to understand what was being sung as the words were not clear enough.

I thought that Nicole was the best thing about the show; she shines as Grizabella. I can't understand why she hasn't performed in the West End before! I hope this is the start of a West End career for her. The show was brilliant but I have to say I preferred the original set of the 1980s production.

The show was amazing. Cats is a one in a lifetime show that you must see or you missed something very special. But the London Palladium Venue is OK. The seats are just made to sit in for 3 hours. The toilets are in a desolate condition. No soap in the gents toilet ,extremely dirty and the ceiling has lots of stains on so you get scared to be in there. Needs desperate improvement.

I was so excited to see Cats that I bought tickets the moment they came on sale earlier this year. I saw it the first time round when I was young and it's stuck with me. This production was just perfect - especially Nicole Scherzinger. I knew she was a talented singer but WOW, she knocked Elaine Paige out of the park. I don't entirely agree with the change of staging though. It used to be in the round but now the audience sit facing the stage. But I'm so happy that Cats returned, here's hoping it sticks around for a long time!

Kerry Ellis leads the cast of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s hit musical Cats as it returns to the West End for a strictly limited 12 week run at the London Palladium.

Based on Old Possum’s Book Of Practical Cats by T S Eliot, Cats tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who gather at the Jellicle Ball for their leader Old Deuteronomy to choose the fellow feline that most deserves to make the journey to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn.

The show’s musical numbers include Memory, The Naming Of Cats, The Rum Tum Tugger, Macavity and The Song Of The Jellicles, with each song telling the story of a different cat as it seeks to prove its case about why it should be the one to make that journey.

Directed by Trevor Nunn with choreography by Gillian Lynne, Cats won the Best New Musical accolade at the Olivier Awards in 1981 and went on to enjoy a 21 year run in the capital. The musical has since been staged in more than 26 countries and seen by more than 50 million people.

Please note, Kerry Ellis will not be performing on 23, 24 or 25 April.

Andrew Lloyd Webber’s record-breaking, award-winning, meow-velous musical CATS comes to Centre Stage London!

Adapted from TS Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, this “groundbreaking musical” (Daily Express) comes together in a sparkling fusion of music, dance and verse, and has now taken on a new life for a new generation.

On just one special night of the year, all Jellicle cats meet at the Jellicle Ball where Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, makes the Jellicle choice and announces which of them will go up to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.  We are thrilled to be bringing an amateur version of CATS to an amateur theatre-loving audience.

Adapted from TS Eliot’s ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, this “groundbreaking musical” (Daily Express) comes together in a sparkling fusion of music, dance and verse, and has now taken on a new life for a new generation.

CATS, one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history, received its world premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981 where it played for 21 record-breaking years and almost 9,000 performances. The ground-breaking production, originally directed by Trevor Nunn and featuring musical staging by Gillian Lynne, was the winner of the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Musical. In 1983, the Broadway production became the recipient of seven Tony awards including Best Musical, and ran for 18 years.

Since its world premiere, CATS has been presented all over the world, in many different languages and still performs to millions of audience members worldwide today. The Broadway cast recording also won a Grammy Award for Best Cast Album.

The magnificent musical score includes one of the most treasured songs in musical theatre —‘Memory’, which has been recorded by over 150 artists from Barbra Streisand and Johnny Mathis to Liberace and Barry Manilow.

With universal appeal and an expandable cast of different age groups, the show has not only been presented in theatres, but also in tents in Japan and Korea, an engine shed in Switzerland and school gymnasiums across the USA.

Review: CATS THE MUSICAL, International Tour

The show will tour in Norway, Sweden, Holland, Switzerland, Germany and Portugal

pixeltracker

It was my honour to get invited to review Cat 's international tour, which reached Finland's capital Helsinki on 4 November. I sent my accreditation request as early as in early 2022 when I saw the first advertisements. I consented that "I'll get an invitation a few days before the show" if I'm accepted. Oh, a year ahead to wait, I thought.

LATEST NEWS

But it was worth it. Though on behalf of Live Nation Finland there wasn't any guidance for a press: I didn't get (nor find from the humongous hall filled with sausage kiosks) the programme and my seat was quite far away so I hardly could see the gentle changes in expressions I'd loved to get absorbed. Nevertheless I enjoyed as much as I could and let me say, it was not a struggle in front of this show.

Everything starts from dimness. The iconic tune starts to play, which sounds like a cat prowling on a keyboard at times. We see see pairs of glowing dots on the stage one could interpret as eyes just like in the advertisement.

Let's cut to the chase: Cats was ahead of its time in 80s. The great hook in the show are definitely the costumes, the set design and the way our performers move.

Something delighting I noticed was precisely in the choreography: in addition that performers had the skill to rotate their spine extremely well and move different body parts in separate rhythm - just like a cat - was that the movements done in a group choreo were "simple" and small enought to execute in sync. That is something I've thought about too. Preferably simple movements excellently rather than complex movements with little mistakes here and there.

Of course the details are also thought out: for example I enjoyed how one cat did stretches and in middle of one shivered. It looked very authentic.

On the contrary to simple group scenes I also enjoyed an intimate bit where there were only two performers on the stage singing about Macavity. When the other moved, the other paid attention and the stage was used creatively in all directions.

Review: CATS THE MUSICAL, International Tour

Before this bit there was also Mungojerrie and Rumpelteazer's scene which brings me to my favorite few performers. Naturally there were no weak links but the artists whose techniques I was most interested in were Rumpelteazer (Ella Kemp), Skimbleshanks (Philip Bertioli) the Railway Cat and Gus (Hal Fowler) the theatrical Cat. Rumpleteazer was very lively, Skimbleshanks was very present and assertive and Gus' charisma reached and thrilled me from 10 meters apart.

They all were very in tune with their own energy as well as other energies: co-performers, audience and the general flow. They did not "push" any expressions nor used theatrical gimmicks but actually lived on stage and enjoyed. If they didn't enjoy they at least had some excellent technique to hide it.

I've sent some questions for them to answer, which I hope I get to publish soon!

The fourth wall is broken in many ways. In the beginning our cats spring from behind the audience on stage, their eyes glimmering the same way as on stage. Also the lightbulbs hung above the audience.

Gosh, I have so much to write about. Just carry on.

Fourth wall is also broken in the first song when a Cat sings the thoughts of an audience aloud, pointing an audience member: "There's a man over there with a look of surprise,

As much as to say, "Well now how about that!" Do I actually see with my own very eyes

A man who's not heard of a Jellicle cat?"

Jellicle term is quite like Smurf, I blurt to my Finnish mother as an easy example.

I waited for a plot, but the show was more about introducing different cats of the Jellicle's and their past and specialities. Perhaps they all were interested in getting a new Jellicle life? Also the very beginning foreshadows it as the Cats come on stage with different styles to different musical tones. The orchestra was flawless, by the way, though at first the electric quitar was way too loud but was fortunately fixed in the second half.

Due to these different musical numbers, which also vary in style, including acrobatics, magic and special effects. I'd argue this show leans towards a cabaret. It keeps our interest up: what - or who - comes next?

Also the color designs of lights and costumes entertain our senses in this spectacle, still telling us and supporting the stories of the characters. A perky cat step dances in their bright orange costume in front of blue hues. The Rum Tum Tugger is introduced in golden, luxurious lights. Cheerful music abruptly stops and the stage is lit up in red - the danger is coming. I adored that very moment because I've thought to myself that a scene like that would work so very well in a production.

Loved how the spot light lived and changed with the music when the Magical Mr. Mistoffelees danced. In the end he blew it away but during the excellent dancing the light's movements could have been in more specific moments: when I first noticed it I eagerly waited for it a long time before it happened again. I tried to find a patter for it, but it seemed to happen in quite "random" (of course planned for the team) moments, but for the audience it didn't offer "butterflies in the brain". If it would have been linked to an instrument or some rhythms every now and then, would it have worked better?

The show also knows how to play in contrast, not only in the color design. The stray cat, ex-glamorous Cat Grizabella's (Jacinta Whyte) entrances are a symbol of loneliness. All the others dance joyfully to cheerful music, but when Grizabella walks on the empty stage, the atmosphere goes blue, music becomes minimalistic and sad. She mimics the movements the young cats did, in vain. We're hit with the most recognizable song Memory, which se executes excellently. Her looks are also well designed: the long hair tells me she hasn't taken care of herself and is evidently an outcast in comparison to the puffy furs of others. There is also some kind of a collar or a hoodie that gives an impression that her head hangs low and shoulders are up - which isn't physically possible at the same time when she sings so well. So a splendid trick from the costume team!

All in all Cats has deserved its place on a musical pedestal. It's filled with tricks, details but most of all talent of all aspects of Cabaret-like theatre making. This family friendly show gives something for everyone from combat choreos and special effects to amusing moments when a senior remembers he has in fact one more story to tell. And we did listen, not sparing applauses.

SCIENCE EXTRA : there's an interesting study on hypermobility - which means your joints are very mobile. It's a challenge, though an advantage to many performers. See, being hypermobile has a link in being neurologically sensitive and emotional: "The hypermobility group scored higher for interoceptive sensitivity yet were not significantly more anxious. Our findings specifically link hypermobility to the structural integrity of a brain centre implicated in normal and abnormal emotions and physiological responses." 'Cats' Musical Wiki

Il Sistina 2022

Exclusively licensed under license from The Really Useful Group (London), an Italian language production of Cats first opened on 7th December 2022 at Il Sistina in Rome, running until 22nd January 2023 as the first season of the production. It was put on by PeepArrow Entertainment in collaboration with the Teatro Sistina.

A second season run in Rome was announced to start on 5th October 2023, finishing later the same month, before touring across the country, ending in early March 2024. The stop in Milan, which opened 13th December 2023, was performed in a tent venue (the new Il Sistina Chapiteau), as opposed to a traditional theatre.

The production ran for 30 shows in the first season between December 2022 and January 2023, and 96 shows for the second season between October 2023 and March 2024, for a total of 126 shows.

For the first time in the world, the musical had obtained permission from the author to be set in Rome, a city well known in the world for its colonies and, in particular, the Italian Cats was set in a hypothetical and futuristic "dump" of works of art, archaeological finds, with the Colosseum in the background. Among statues of Marcus Aurelius, fragments of the Mouth of Truth, capitals, columns, and other finds, the sets were scaled in size to make the humanization of cats even more spectacular and magical.
