What is a US Visitor Visa

A visa is a document that allows you to enter a foreign country. Typically, it also contains the date when you’re expected to leave the country.

There are different types of visa categories – immigrant and non-immigrant visas.

If you want to travel to the United States for holiday, business, to see a family member, or any other temporary reason, you’ll need a visitor visa.

A US visitor visa is relatively easy to get. You just need to pass all the requirements, including having complete documents and sufficient funds.

USA Visitor Visa Categories

There are two main categories of USA Visitor Visa. They are:

Business (B1) Visa :  If you’re travelling to the United States for business purposes, a B1 visa is what you should apply for. For example, you might want to attend a conference or seminar, negotiate contracts, or consult.

With a Business B1 Visa, you’re only permitted to:

• Attend business conventions, conferences, and seminars
• Negotiate business contracts
• Undertake short-term business training
• Consult with business associates
• Settling an estate

You can also apply for a Business B1 Visa if you’re travelling to the United States for business reasons.

With a Business B1 Visa, you’re allowed to stay in the United States for up to 6 months. If your visa expires, you can renew if you’re not done with your business matters.

Tourist (B2) Visa :  If you’re traveling to the United States for vacation purposes, a B2 Visa is what you should apply for. The visa category is also for people travelling for medical reasons. A lot of people travel to the US for tourism, which is B2 is a very popular visa.

With a Tourist B2 Visa, you’re only permitted to:

• Attend social events
• Visit family and friends
• Undertake a short-study course
• Participate in sports and music contests without receiving payment.
• Get medical treatment

Like the business visa, you’re allowed to stay in the USA for a maximum of 6 months. However, you can’t engage in any of the activities permitted by a business visa.

It’s important to apply for the right visa to avoid breaking immigration rules. You break the immigration rules when you engage in activities that aren’t permitted by your visa.

How to Apply for a Visitor Visa

As mentioned earlier, applying for a visitor’s visa is relatively easy. Below are simple steps to follow:

• You will start by visiting the official website.
• On the website, you will complete and submit the  DS-160 Form .
• After submitting, print the confirmation page.
• Upload your passport photograph as requested. Your passport photograph must meet specific requirements for it to be approved.
• Pay the visa fee and print your receipt.
• Schedule a date for your visa interview at a US consulate or embassy.
• Attend your interview with all the necessary documents
• At the visa application center, you’ll be asked to provide your biometric information – fingerprint and facial photo
• After completing the above requirements, you will wait to hear from the embassy

After completing the above steps, the embassy will make a decision on your visa application and let you know if it is approved.

Documents You Will Need to Apply

While going for your visa interview, you’re expected to come with the following documents:

• Passport-style photograph
• A valid international passport that’s valid for the next six months at least
• Confirmation page of your DS-160 form application
• Your interview schedule confirmation
• Bank statement to show that you can cover your expenses
• Receipt of your paid visa fees
• Documents showing the purpose of your trip. For instance, you can present your conference or contract letter for a business trip. Also, hotel bookings and transport arrangements can be helpful.
• Proof of home ties, such as properties or close relationships in your home country, to show that you intend to come back
• Proof that you have no previous criminal record or convictions

You may need to provide some other case-specific documents not listed above if the embassy requests them.

Travelling for Medical Treatment

If you’re travelling for medical treatment, you need the following documents for your B-2 visa application:

• Your medical diagnosis from a licensed physician in your home country. The diagnosis must outline why treatment in the US is important.
• Letter from a licensed physician or medical facility in the US showing that they are willing to treat you. The letter must contain the cost and duration of your treatment.
• Evidence that you can take care of your medical, living, and transportation expenses during your stay

Attending Your Visa Interview

You must attend an interview if you’re between 14 and 79 years old. Once you submit your application, you should schedule your interview immediately to have it early. You’ll get an interview confirmation in your email after scheduling. You must print and go with it to your interview.

At the interview, you’re expected to answer all questions you’ll be asked. An official will ask you questions about your application and background. You’ll have to explain why you need a visa and convince the official that you meet all the requirements.

The official will also check the documents you provide to ensure you meet the requirements. In some cases, you may be asked to provide some exclusive information or document.

ESTA Visitor’s Visa

You can travel to the USA for tourism or business reasons without applying for a B-1 or B-2 visa. Instead, you can apply for the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) Visitor’s Visa. While the ESTA Visitor’s Visa is not technically a visa, it allows you to stay in the United States for up to 90 days.

The ESTA Tourist Visa is part of the United States Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Therefore, you can only apply for the ESTA Visitor’s Visa if you’re a citizen of a participating country. The countries part of the VWP include:

Andorra,  Austria, Australia, Belgium, Brunei, Chile, Czech Republic, Denmark,  France, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Luxembourg,  Latvia, Liechtenstein, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino,  Slovenia, South Korea, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom.

You must have a valid ESTA approval before you can travel to the US. Before you can apply for ESTA approval, you must not have any approved visitor’s B visa. In addition, you’ll need to provide the following:

• A valid international passport from your home country
• Your home address and phone number
• A valid email address
• An emergency phone number and email address

In some cases, you may also need to provide the following:

• Your National ID or Personal ID number
• Your aliases and other names not included in your passport
• Your employer’s address and phone number
• Your point of contact name, email address, and phone number, and in the US
• Your global entry ID number

To apply for ESTA approval, you also need to pay an application fee. The fee costs $14 and is non-refundable. Your ESTA is typically valid for two years. Within that period, you’ll only need to apply for a new ESTA if you change your country, name, or gender.

Cost of Visitor Visa Application

The cost of applying for a visitor visa application is $160 (One Hundred and Sixty Dollars Only).

The fee is the same for both Business and Tourist visas. You’ll have to pay the equivalent fee in your local currency.

Payment of this fee is required for your application to be processed. You can’t get to the next step if you’ve not paid.

And depending on your country and where you’re submitting your application, you may be required to pay additional fees.

This could include the cost of gathering the necessary paperwork and passport images.

You could also pay the cost of scheduling appointments to visit the visa application center and the embassy.

If additional fees are required, you must pay them before your visa can be processed.

It’s important to note that all fees you pay for your visa application are non-refundable.

In other words, even when your visa application is rejected, you won’t get your money back.

If you want to reapply, you’ll have to pay the fees again.

Appointment Waiting Time

The visa appointment waiting time differs depending on your home country and where you submitted your documents.

Factors like how busy the embassy is and the number of appointment slots available affect the waiting time.

You can get an estimate of how long you could wait on the US Department of State’s Website. On the website, simply select your city from the list and click on Go.

The website lists the waiting time for visitor’s visas as well as other types of non-immigrant visas.

However, it’s still important to note that the waiting time you get is an estimate. You can check from time to time because the waiting time changes every week.

Reasons for Visitor Visa Denial

If your visa is approved, congratulations, you can arrange your flight and enter the United States. However, you may also experience denial, and there are several reasons why that could happen.

Your application will be denied if you provided misleading information or any false evidence during the application process. Also, it’ll be denied if you’ve breached immigration rules in the US in the past or you have some criminal record.

Furthermore, your application may be denied if you suffer from any transmissible disease. Past arrest or conviction on cases related to drug abuse or trafficking can also affect you. Finally, if your visa application is incomplete, it will not be approved by the embassy.

If your visa application is denied, you cannot appeal the decision. You can only reapply for a visa if circumstances change. For example, if you were denied on health grounds, you may reapply when you’re well. Also, you may provide more convincing and genuine evidence and information in your next application. In cases of breach of immigration rules or criminal records, reapplying won’t make any difference.

If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

U.S. visitors—as well as visitors from Europe , Australia and Canada —will soon be required to apply for permission to enter the U.K. through a new scheme known as Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA).

The U.K. government is in the process of fully digitizing U.K. borders by the end of 2025—and the ETA scheme will play its part, allowing “individuals, and carriers, with more assurance at an earlier point in time about their ability to travel to the U.K.,” the government said.

The scheme will be in place by the end of this year (2023), and visitors will be required to fill out an online application granting them permission to travel. There will be a small fee included in the application—similar to how the U.S.'s own ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) system works for U.K. travelers.

Here's everything we know.

Will I need a visa to enter the U.K.?

This isn't technically a visa—the ETA system will grant travelers permission to enter the country. You will need to apply for an ETA prior to arrival. If you haven't received permission to travel before arrival, you may get fined.

How long will it take to get an ETA?

Travelers will be advised to apply for an ETA at least a few days before their journey. Approval should be granted within 72 hours of application.

How long will an ETA last?

After your ETA has been approved, visitors will be granted permission to stay in the U.K. for six months, whether for business or tourism reasons.

The U.K. government is yet to confirm how often visitors will need to apply for a new ETA, but it's likely to be valid for two years—meaning there's no need to apply for a new one every time you visit within the valid time period.

Visitors with valid ETAs can stay—and travel—in U.K. for up to six months.

How much will an ETA cost?

We don't know yet—but the government has said that the cost will be small. The EU implemented a similar system in 2022, which costs €7. A U.S. ESTA, meanwhile, costs $21.

Who will need to apply for an ETA?

The full list of nations included hasn't been announced yet. We do know that U.S. citizens who don't hold a visa will need to apply for an ETA, as will other visa-exempt nations such as Canada and Australia. European countries are likely to be included, too.  Those traveling from nationalities without a visa-free agreement with the UK will still need to apply for another applicable type of UK visa.

What will I need to apply for an ETA?

You'll need a valid passport , an email address to register with, and to supply the details of your travel, as well as a valid debit or credit card to pay any fees to apply.

The US is supportive of international education, welcoming foreign students and exchange visitors who prior to their entry to the US for study purposes must first obtain a visa. Educational qualifications in the U.S are highly prestigious and this makes students across the world want to attend U.S institutions.

However, before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsor in order to be eligible and also fulfill the general requirements in order to obtain a study visa.

There are four types of US student visas depending on the specific reason the international student wants to enter the US:

• F-1 visa – for attending academic education starting from elementary to graduate school, including language courses.
• M-1 visa – for students enrolled in vocational and non-academic education, excluding language courses.
• J-1 visa – for studying when various organizations sponsor you.
• Q-1 visa – for participants in an international cultural exchange program (which also provides opportunities for foreign nationals to come work and train in the US)

You need to apply for a U.S work visa

The U.S work visas are used for people to go and work temporarily in the U.S. for a specified period of time. The period of time that you will be working should be noted in the employment contract or the visa application. This type of U.S visa does not allow individuals to work in the U.S indefinitely or permanently. Applicants need to fulfill a list of requirements and submit the documents specified in the next sections of this article to be eligible to apply for a temporary work visa.

You need to apply for a U.S immigrant visa

You are not eligible for ESTA and you need to apply for a U.S immigrant. To learn more about U.S immigrant visas and their types visit this article.

Immigrant visas give its holders the right to stay in the U.S permanently. Whereas with a U.S nonimmigrant visa, the person is required to return to their home country when their visa expires, an immigrant visa does not expire. It allows you to live, work, and study in the U.S or engage in any activity you like.

Types of immigrant visas are:

• Immediate Relative visas  – to unite with family members who live out of the country.
• Family Preference visas  – to reunite with close family members
• Employment Sponsored visas  –  for those who have found jobs in the U.S

Residents of many countries have to go through a rigid process in order to get a U.S. visa. However, things change dramatically when it comes to the citizens of the United Kingdom as they enjoy certain privileges regarding traveling to the U.S. The United Kingdom is also one of the countries that come under the Visa Waiver Program .  

Do the Uk Residents Need a Visa to Enter the U.S.?

The citizens of the UK don’t need a visa to enter the U.S. since the United Kingdom is one of the 38 countries that participate in the visa waiver program. Citizens of these 38 countries just need a stamp on their passport which allows them to visit the U.S. However, it’s important to mention that not all UK residents hold citizenship. In this case, a UK resident might need a visa to enter the U.S.

Electronic System for Travel Authorization – ESTA

The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) is an automated system established by the United States of America, which determines the eligibility of travelers to visit the USA, under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

The Visa Waiver Program (VWP) is administered by the US Department of Homeland Security and permits the residents of 38 countries to travel to the USA for tourism and business for up to 90 days, with just a travel authorization. British citizens, with the unrestricted right of permanent abode in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, have been part of this list since 1988.

However, two categories of UK citizens are excluded from the eligibility to apply for a travel authorization:

• Those who have traveled to or been present in Iran, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Libya, Somalia and Yemen on or after March 1, 2011 (with limited exceptions for travel for diplomatic or military purposes in the service of the UK).
• And those who are also nationals of Iran, Iraq, Sudan, or Syria.

However, the citizens of these 38 countries, including the United Kingdom, when traveling to the US for other reasons as employment or medical treatment, must apply for a regular visa as regulated by the US visa policy.

If you are a UK citizen whose travel authorization has been refused, despite applying several times, you will also have to apply for a regular visa, even if your purpose of the visit is business or tourism.

Choosing a Visa for the USA Based on the Purpose of Travel

If you are entering the US for non-business or tourism purposes, then you will need to apply for a visa even if you are a citizen of a VWP country. The US immigration authorities have established a number of visas depending on the reason behind one’s purpose to enter the country. The residents of the United Kingdom can apply for one of the types of visas as listed below:

A-1/A-2 Visa – Diplomats & Foreign Government Officials.

This type of visa applies to diplomats and other foreign British government officials entering the US with the purpose of engaging in official activities.

UK Residents Eligible for an A-1 visa:

• Head of UK government (Prime Minister), regardless of the purpose of travel
• Ambassador or Consul of the United Kingdom embassy or consulate in the United States
• UK government cabinet member or minister, traveling to the US with the purpose of engaging in official activities
• UK residents part of European Union delegation representatives
• Family members (spouse and unmarried sons and daughters) of a UK citizen, holder of a US A-1 visa

UK Residents Eligible for an A-2 visa:

• A full-time employee assigned by the UK government to work at its embassy or consulate in the US
• UK government official visiting the US with the purpose of performing government related duties
• UK military members assigned to work at the UK embassy or consulate in the US, or stationed at a US military base
• UK residents, the staff of a European Union delegation representatives

Keep in mind that aside from the Head of the government of the UK no other government official visiting the US for a non-official purpose is eligible for this visa type. Officials of local governments representing a local political entity are not eligible for this type of visa either.

A-3 Visa – Domestic Employee of an A-1/A-2 Visa holder

This is a visa established for the personal employees, attendants or domestic workers of the government officials and diplomats who hold a valid A-1 or A-2 visa.

B-1 Visa – Business visitors

United Kingdom residents who are not eligible to apply for travel authorization will have to apply for a B1 Visa . In order for one to be able to obtain this visa, he or she must fulfill the criteria listed below:

• Your business must be of a legitimate nature
• You plan to remain in the USA for a limited period of time
• You are financially capable to maintain yourself during the time you are staying in the US
• You have no intention of abandoning the UK and staying in the US a US A-2 visa

Under this visa, your spouse and children are not eligible to apply for a dependent visa.

B-1 Visa – Domestic Employee

The B-1 visa is for domestic or personal employees which may include cooks, nannies, butlers, chauffeurs, maids, gardeners, and paid companions who have to accompany an employer to the U.S. A major requirement is the documentation of a proper wage to the employee.

B-2 Visa – Holiday, tourism, medical treatment

The B2 visa is designed for visitors that wish to visit the United States, visit family, friends or relatives, for holidays, or enter the country to seek medical treatment. People applying for a B-2 visa must show evidence that they have strong relationships with the UK and that they do not intend to stay in the USA after their visas expire.

C-1 Visa – Transiting the United States

If you need to enter the United States en route to another country, but you don’t qualify for a Travel Authorization, you need to apply for a C – 1 Transit Visa . If you already possess a valid visitor visa, then you can use that to transit the U.S.

D Visa – Crew Members working on air or sea carriers

You must have a C-1/D visa in case you work as a crew member at an international sea carrier or airline that travels from the UK to the U.S.

American Visa Application Requirements

After you have selected the visa type you need to apply for, you should start gathering the documents that are required for that US visa . The commonly required documents are as follows:

• Confirmation page of the application form DS-160
• The appointment confirmation page (if applicable)
• Passport – valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of planned stay in the US. The passport must have at least one blank page in order to be able to affix visa.
• One photo – of 5 x 5 cm size, taken within the last 6 months. If you have successfully uploaded a picture to the DS-160 application form, then you are not required to submit an additional photo.
• Previous US visas – if you have visited the US before with an older passport, then you shall take it with you on the day of the interview at the embassy or consulate.
• ACRO – which is a police certificate you should submit if you have ever been arrested, cautioned or convicted.
• Letter from a physician, if you have a medical condition that could have a bearing on your eligibility for a visa.
• Invitation letter , if applying for a B-2 visa
• If you have ever been rejected for entry or deported from the US, you must also submit documents in this regard.

US Visa Application Process

After you have decided what type of US visa you need and you have collected the required documents, it’s time to apply. The US visa application will go through these simple steps:

• Fill in Form DS-160.
• Pay your application fee.
• Schedule visa interview.
• Attend the visa interview.

Fill in Form DS-160

You should complete the online application form DS-160 and then print the confirmation page. Take this page with you when you attend the interview. The application form contains questions about personal information as:

• Marital Status
• Nationality
• Date & Place of Birth
• Mobile number
• Passport number
• Passport book number
• Family information

There are also a couple of questions on security and background information which include the questions listed below:

• Have you ever been arrested or convicted for any offense or crime, even though subject of a pardon, amnesty, or other similar action?
• Have you ever violated, or engaged in a conspiracy to violate, any law relating to controlled substances?
• Are you coming to the United States to engage in prostitution or unlawful commercialized vice or have you been engaged in prostitution or procuring prostitutes within the past 10 years?
• Have you ever been involved in, or do you seek to engage in money laundering?
• Do you seek to engage in espionage, sabotage, export control violations, or any other illegal activity while in the United States?
• Do you seek to engage in terrorist activities while in the United States or have you ever engaged in terrorist activities?
• Have you ever or do you intend to provide financial assistance or other support to terrorists or terrorist organizations?
• Are you a member or representative of a terrorist organization?
• Have you ever ordered, incited, committed, assisted, or otherwise participated in genocide?

Pay your application fee and schedule the interview

Go to   https://ais.usvisa-info.com/en-gb and pay the Machine Readable Visa (MRV) application fee and schedule an interview. You can do that by following these steps:

• Create a user account
• Enter the DS-160 confirmation number you have received in your email after completing the form
• Complete the courier document return process
• Pay the application fee
• Schedule an appointment for an interview

The MRV Fee for visa applicants depends on the type of visa one applies for. The schedule is tiered as follows:

• MRV Fee – $185
• Petition Based Applicants (H, L, O, P, Q, R) – $205
• E-1, E-2 & E-3 visa applicants – $315

Attend the Visa Interview

All applicants from the age of 14 to the age of 79 that apply for a USA visa from the UK, have to appear in person at the US consulate or embassy for the interview . Applicants under 14 and over 80 are eligible to apply by a courier.

Show up on time, since arriving too late may result in the cancellation of your appointment. Get yourself ready to be at the embassy or consulate where you apply for around two to three hours, because of the processes. Have all your documents with you, and nicely organized.

Before you attend the interview, the embassy/consulate staff will collect, data enter and examine your application documents. You will have to get your fingerprints scanned, and then you will have a few-minutes-short interview with a consular officer.

Application Processing Time

Successful applications typically don’t take more than three to five workdays to get approved , Despite that, sometimes the application processing may take up to 6 months or even longer. Your passport will remain at the embassy while your application is being processed. After the approval or rejection of your visa, the embassy or consulate will deliver your passport. You cannot collect your passport by yourself.

What to do in Case of Visa Denial?

In the case of visa denial , the applicant will not be able to get the fee back. However, you can reapply in the future by submitting a new application and paying the visa fee again.

If you don’t want your application to get rejected for the same reason again, you should produce proof of changes in the circumstances in order to ensure approval.

Every Tuesday evening and Friday morning a report detailing all visa decisions made during the reference period, by the New Delhi visa office, is posted below. Where an application is made through a VFS visa application centre (VAC), it will take a number of days for your documents to transit back the the VAC once a decision is made by the visa office. Further information on document transit times can be found under the  Visa Processing Times tab above.

Splitting up household jobs, whether that be cleaning, washing or life admin, is an issue that affects a lot of couples. 

Starling Bank found women do a total of 36 hours of household tasks and admin per week - equivalent to a full-time job. 

This is nine hours more than men - and yet men believe they do the majority in their household. The average man estimates they do 52% of work overall.

It's the discrepancy between perception and reality (and, of course, this can work both ways) that leads to arguments.

Couples who don't divide the housework equally have roughly five arguments about housework each month - rising to eight for couples who rely on just one person for the work.

We spoke to relationship expert Hayley Quinn about the best ways to split household work - and how to deal with arguments should they arise with your partner. 

She explained that it's necessary to be "transparent" when deciding how to split the workload - but also to be flexible in order to find a solution that suits all involved. 

While a 50/50 split might be your idea of perfection, Hayley said it was "almost inevitable that one partner may take on slightly more of the load" at different periods of time. 

"Striving for perfect 50/50 fairness at all times is a really nice ideal, but it just may not be that practical for modern life," she said. 

She said some jobs may be more visible than others, like cleaning, sorting out the washing, and taking the bins out.

Other jobs can take up just as much time and resource, but will fly under the radar. She gave the examples or sorting out travel insurance or changing over internet provider. 

How should you approach a conversation with your partner about splitting the work? 

To start off, Hayley said you should enter the conversation with a positive mindset - think how you are both contributing to the relationship in different ways.

"When you're having these conversations, it's not that many people are sitting around feeling like they're not contributing," Hayley said. 

"In fact, I think if there's a discrepancy in how people contribute, it's just due to a lack of awareness as to what the other partner does, and some chores are just more obviously visible than others."

Try to avoid starting the chat with the perspective that you are working a lot harder than your partner and they're not pulling their weight. 

"That way, you start from a place of we're all on the same team," she said. 

"When you're doing that as well, it's really important not to make statements which assume what the other partner is thinking, feeling, or contributing. 

"So, for instance, saying something like 'I'm always the one that's picking the kids up from school and you never do anything',  becomes easily very accusational, and this is when arguments start.

"Instead, most partners will be much more receptive if you simply ask for more help and assistance." 

When asking for help, Hayley said it's important to ask in a way that's verbal and clear - don't assume your partner is going to intuitively know what share of household chores to take on if you just complain. 

"In a nice way, explicitly ask for what you want. It could be something like saying, 'Look, I know that we're both working a long week, but I feel like there's so much to do. It would be really helpful if... I'd really appreciate it if you take over lunch,'" she explained. 

"Again, start from a place of appreciation. Acknowledge what your partner contributes already, and be explicitly clear as to what you would like them to do. Phrase it as a request for their help." 

She also said some people can feel protective of how jobs are completed, and learning to relinquish that control can be helpful. 

"If you want it to feel more equitable, you have to let your partner do things in their own way," she said. 

What happens if that doesn't work? 

If you find the conversations aren't helping, you can always try organising a rota, Hayley said. 

She recommended using Starling Bank's Share the Load tool to work out your chore split. 

However, she said if you feel there are constant conversations and nothing is changing then the issue is becoming more about communication than sharing the workload. 

"It's actually about someone not hearing what you're trying to communicate to them, so it's more of a relationship-wide issue," she said. 

She advised sitting down and trying to have another transparent verbal conversation, making it clear that you have spoken about this before and how it's making you feel in a factual way, without placing blame. 

Using phrases like "I've noticed" or "I've observed" can help, she said. 

If after all that, the situation still isn't getting better, she said it's time to consider confiding in friends or family for support, or seeing a relationship counsellor. 

The oldest and most prestigious tennis event in the world returns on Monday, with the best of the best players to battle over two weeks to be named champion.

Crowds in their thousands will flock to Wimbledon to enjoy a spot of sport - as well as the range of food and drink on offer.

It's not the cheapest day out, with a cool cup of Pimms setting you back just under £10 and a bottle of water coming in at nearly £3.

But did you know that despite souring inflation in recent years sending food prices through the roof, one fan favourite - the quintessentially British strawberries and cream combo - has stayed at the same price since 2010?

A pot of the sweet snack costs just £2.50, making it one of the more affordable offerings at the All England Club. It has been served up there since the very first Wimbledon tournament in 1877.

Perdita Sedov, Wimbledon's head of food and beverage, previously told The Telegraph the price freeze "goes back to a long-standing tradition" of strawberries and cream being associated with the championship.

"It's about being accessible to all," she said.

According to the Wimbledon website, each year more than 38.4 tonnes of strawberries are picked and consumed during the tournament.

Ofgem is being urged not to lift a ban on acquisition-only energy tariffs (deals that are available only to new customers, not existing ones).

A coalition of consumer organisations and energy companies led by Which? has penned a letter to the government regulator for electricity and gas warning it of the risk of a "return to a market which discriminates against loyal customers". 

They have also raised the potential impact on customers in debt, who may not be able to switch but could also find themselves struggling to access a better deal with their current supplier under the plans. 

The letter also notes the "very recent history" when more than 30 suppliers went bust - many after trying to win customers with unsustainably cheap tariffs.

Ofgem has said it could remove the ban on acquisition-only tariffs from 1 October but consumer choice website Which?  has research that shows the public are opposed to cheap deals that exclude existing customers, with 81% feeling it would be unfair if their supplier was offering cheaper deals to new customers only. 

The consumer champion has signed the letter to Ofgem alongside E.ON, Octopus, So Energy, Rebel Energy, End Fuel Poverty Coalition, Citizens Advice and Fair by Design.

I am in my 70s with still about five years to go on my mortgage. It stands at 30k on a 300k house. The mortgage repayments are £800 a month, this doesn't sound much but on a static pension it is massive and I am literally on the point of not having sufficient money to pay it. Red

Same thing happened to me, except that they didn't let me refund the vehicle and claimed it was my fault even though I told them about the issue during the six months' warranty multiple times... they barely replied. K

A new upgrade coming to the Fire TV 4K devices transforms your television into a console, thanks to Xbox Cloud Gaming.

You'll need to be a member of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate to take advantage, plus you'll need a compatible controller and a solid internet connection.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate currently costs £1 for the first 14 days for new members, then is billed at £12.99 per month.

House prices are overvalued by thousands of pounds, according to a major property company.

The typical property is £20,000 more than is affordable to the average household, says Zoopla.

But rising incomes and longer mortgage terms mean the "over-valuation" is expected to disappear by the end of the year.

Zoopla's report said: "House prices still look expensive on various measures of affordability.

"We expect house price inflation to remain muted, likely to rise more slowly than household incomes over the next one to two years."

The average house price is around £264,900 – but according to Zoopla's calculations, the affordable price is £245,200.

"A new government will add a dimension of political stability when the autumn market starts in September and even if the [Bank of England base] rate is not lower by then, a cut will be imminent," said Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at estate agent Knight Frank.

"Given that mortgage rates will steadily reduce as services inflation comes under control, we expect UK house prices to rise by 3% this year."

Zoopla's over-valuation estimate was reached by comparing the actual average house price in its index with an "affordable" price, which was calculated based on households' disposable incomes, average mortgage rates and average deposit sizes for home buyers.

It's one of the most iconic and popular music festivals in the world, and it's notoriously hard to get a ticket.

Glastonbury has rolled around once again and roughly 210,000 people have flocked to Somerset this year as Dua Lipa, Coldplay and SZA headline the UK's biggest festival this weekend.

Those in the crowd are in the lucky minority — an estimated 2.5 million people tried to get tickets for this year's event, meaning the odds really aren't in your favour if you fancy going.

Tickets routinely sell out within an hour of going on sale, and that demand is unlikely to decrease next year, given the festival will likely take a fallow year in 2026.

One of the reasons this is done is to stop ticket touting, with all tickets non-transferable. Each ticket features the photograph of the registered ticket holder, with security checks carried out to ensure that only the person in the photograph is admitted to the festival.

Registration is free and only takes a few minutes. You will be asked to provide basic contact details and to upload a passport-standard photo.

Registration closes a few weeks before tickets are released.

Where to buy tickets:  Tickets can be bought exclusively at  glastonbury.seetickets.com   once they become available.

No other site or agency will be allocated tickets, so if you see anyone else claiming to have Glastonbury tickets available for purchase, it's most likely a scam.

When tickets go on sale: We don't know the details for next year yet - but Glastonbury ticket sales usually take place in October or November of the year before the festival. 

This year's ticket sales began, following a delay, in November 2023. Coach tickets typically go on sale a few days before (traditionally on a Thursday), with general admission tickets following on the Sunday morning a few days later.

For those that miss out, there's also a resale that takes place in April for tickets that have been returned or for those with a balance that has not been paid.

This year's April resale took place on 18 April (for ticket and coach travel options) and 21 April (general admission tickets and accommodation options).

How much it costs:  General admission tickets for this year's festival cost £355 each, plus a £5 booking fee. That's an increase on last year's price of £335 each, which was also an increase on the 2022 price of around £280.

So, we can probably assume that ticket prices will go up once again for next year's festival. 

Remember, there are options to pay for your ticket in instalments, so you won't have to pay the full price in one go if you don't want to. All tickets are subject to a £75 deposit, with the remaining balance payable by the first week of April.

It's also worth noting that Glastonbury is a family festival, and that's reflected in the fact that children aged 12 and under when the festival takes place are admitted free of charge.

TIPS FOR THE BIG TICKET SALE DAY

The scramble for tickets when they go on general sale is nothing short of painstaking, with demand far outweighing supply.

Here are some tips to give you the best possible chance of bagging tickets:

Familiarise yourself with the website: You may see a reduced, bare-looking version of the booking page once you gain entry. The organisers say this is intentional to cope with high traffic and does not mean the site has crashed, so be sure not to refresh or leave the page.

Once you reach the first page of the booking site, you will need to enter the registration number and registered postcode for yourself and the other people you are attempting to book tickets for.

When you proceed, the details you have provided will be displayed on the next page.

Once you have double checked all of your information is correct, click 'confirm' to enter the payment page, where you will need to check/amend your billing address, confirm your payment information, accept the terms and conditions, and complete the checkout within the allocated time.

Timekeeping: You can get timed out if you don't act fast, so it's a good idea to have your details saved on a separate document so you can copy and paste them over quickly.

You might also have to approve your payment, which could mean answering security questions from your card issuer. Have a device on hand to ensure you're ready for this.

Internet connection: This should go without saying, but you won't stand a chance without a solid internet connection.

Avoid trying to rely on your mobile phone signal, and politely ask those you might share the internet with to delay any online activity that might slow your connection.

Don't give up: Until the page tells you that tickets have sold out, you still have a chance. 

Shortly before that point, there will be a message saying 'all available tickets have now been allocated,' which users often think means their chances are up. 

What it actually means is that orders are being processed for all the tickets that are available. But if somebody whose order is being processed doesn't take our previous advice and runs out of time, their loss could be your gain.

Multiple tabs and devices: Glastonbury advises against its customers trying to run multiple tabs and devices to boost their chances of getting a ticket.

Glastonbury's website says running multiple devices simultaneously is "a waste of valuable resources, and doesn't reflect the ethos of the festival".

"Please stick to one device and one tab," it adds, "so that you can focus on entering your details without confusing your browser and help us make the ticket sale as quick and stress free as possible for all."

Shoppers have been buying bigger TVs to enjoy this summer's European Championships, according to the electrical retailer Currys.

The chain said UK sales were up by more than 30% in the past month, with "supersize" screens — 85-inch and above — selling well in the run-up to the Euros.

"Having a third of the TV market and the Euros being a big event for many people, we're seeing that super-sizing trend keep on giving," said Currys chief executive Alex Baldock.

The most popular, and also cheapest, 85-inch TV on the Currys website costs £999. 

The most expensive super-size TV is a 98-inch offering from Samsung that will set you back £9,499.

Currys reported adjusted pre-tax profits of £118m for the year to 27 April. That represented a 10% increase from the previous year's profits of £107m.

Like-for-like sales for Currys UK and Ireland declined by 2% to £4.97bn in the 12 months to 27 April, with consumer confidence knocked by high inflation levels and rising interest rates.

"We can see our progress in ever-more engaged colleagues, more satisfied customers and better financial performance," Mr Baldock added.

Selling your home can be expensive, with the range of fees that come as part of the selling process meaning costs can really rack up.

Those costs are usually present whether you visit a bricks and mortar estate agents on the high street or if you go online, although Purplebricks has marketed itself as an exception to the rule.

Since December, it has launched a new pricing structure that enables sellers to list their homes without paying a penny, making it the only completely free online estate agent in the UK.

Purplebricks previously charged a fixed fee of £1,349 (including VAT) to sell your house, with that figure rising to £2,999 for those based in and around London. 

That needed to be paid upfront or not later than 10 months after the property was first advertised, even if it went unsold.

Now, after being bought out by rival online estate agency Strike last year, Purplebricks is offering a free service, no strings attached.

Is there a catch, though?

There's no such thing as a free lunch or, it seems, a totally free way to sell your house.

If you'd like to pay more to unlock extras and upgrades, you can do so, with a 'Boost' and 'Full House' package costing £899 and £1,499 respectively.

All estate agents are also required by law to carry out anti-money laundering checks on everyone selling a property.

Typically, that cost is incorporated by estate agents into their service fees. However, as Purplebricks' service is free, it has implemented a separate £60 Anti-Money Laundering (AML) fee for sellers.

What's more, there's also no Rightmove listing included as part of its free service.

As the UK's biggest property portal market, attracting more buyers and sellers than anyone else, Rightmove can help sell your home much faster. 

Purplebricks does include a free Zoopla listing, but adding Rightmove is an optional add-on that will set you back £299.

So, how does Purplebricks make money?

Add-ons and extras. 

Purplebricks will be hoping to make money by customers opting for optional extras or premium services.

As well as the Rightmove example mentioned above, professional photographs and a floorplan will cost £699, while hosted viewings of your property will come at a charge of £899.

Purplebricks can also work with sellers and buyers to help them find the right mortgage deal and by offering them conveyancing services. 

It's important to remember that there is no obligation to buy any of the add-on services, though some will undoubtedly come in handy.
