Turkey Visa for Tourists: A Complete Guide

Updated: October 19, 2023

Turkey visa on arrival image

Turkey has a liberal visa policy offering visa exemption and e-visas to many nationalities. A Turkey visa is also quite easy to obtain from the embassy or an authorized agent.

Turkey has introduced e-Visa to simplify its visa application process and replace its Visa on Arrival. Currently, 30 nationalities can obtain a Turkey e-Visa from the comfort of their homes. 21 nationalities can also obtain an e-Visa if holding a visa or residence permit from any Schengen country, US, UK or Ireland.

Many nationalities from the African continent that were previously eligible for e-Visas were unfortunately removed from that list recently. They will now have to apply for a Turkey visa through a Turkish mission or an agent.

For those who require an e-Visa, VOA or visa from the embassy, the minimum passport validity required is 6 months from the day of arrival. For some, it’s 3 months beyond the validity of their visas.

So in general, you will be fine with 6 months of validity remaining your passport at the time of entering Turkey.

Turkey transit visa requirements

Transit visas are NOT REQUIRED for transiting through Turkish international airports.

Turkey visa requirements for cruise passengers

A Turkey visa is NOT REQUIRED for cruise passengers for up to 72 hours.

Cruise visitors are issued a Harbor City Entry Permit that’s valid for 72 hours and limited to the harbor city where the cruise arrived and its surroundings.

TURKEY VISA ON ARRIVAL

Turkey introduced its e-Visa system in 2013 with the intention of phasing out its Visa on Arrival. But VOA is still available and a few countries that are eligible for e-Visa are also eligible for obtaining VOA at international airports in Turkey.

Even though the e-Visa takes only a few minutes to apply, the VOA fee is considerably lower than the e-Visa fee for certain nationalities. It makes sense to simply get a VOA instead of an e-Visa if you are eligible and the fee is lower.

Validity of Turkey Visa on Arrival

Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days, with multiple entries. Total stay cannot be more than 90 days in a 180-day period.

How long can you stay in Turkey with Visa on Arrival

Turkey Visa on Arrival is valid for 90 days. That means, if you continue to stay in Turkey after you have obtained your Visa on Arrival, you can stay up to 90 days. But if you leave and come back, you can only stay until your Visa on Arrival expiration date.

Also, your total stay in Turkey cannot exceed 90 days in any 180-day period.

  • Your arrival date in Turkey is March 10
  • You obtained VOA on March 10
  • Your visa is valid from 10 March 2022 to 08 June 2022 (90 days)
  • After 45 days, on 24 April 2022, you left Turkey.
  • You entered Turkey again on 19 May 2022 using your previous VOA. You can only stay till 08 June 2022, which is 21 days.

Visa on Arrival application process

The VOA process is quite quick at airports in Turkey. Right before the immigration or passport control, you will see a section called “Visa”. Stop by there and get your visa on arrival.

For obtaining VOA, all you need is your passport and visa on arrival fee in USD, EUR or GBP. Some nationalities require a passport-size photo.

Documents required

You must present the following documents.

  • Passport that’s valid for at least 6 months from the day of arrival in Turkey
  • Cash in USD, EUR or GBP for visa fee payment

The Visa on Arrival (VOA) fee starts from $30 and goes up all the way to $70 USD depending on nationality. Below is the Visa on Arrival fee for all eligible nationalities.

Processing time

It usually takes a few minutes for the Visa on Arrival process. But it depends on how busy the Visa on Arrival section is.

TURKEY’S VISA REQUIREMENTS FOR THE YEMENIS

Applying for the Turkish visa will be much easier with this guide.  As a Yemen citizen, you need a visa in order to visit Turkey. In this case, depending on the purpose of your visit, you have two options. An Electronic visa, or a paper documented visa.

APPLYING FOR E-VISA

turkeyvisa

E-visa is a type of visa that is used for tourism or business purposes. It lasts for 180 days and the visitor has only 30 days to spend in the country with e-visa. E-visa is different from the regular visa in the sense that it is very quick to acquire, in about 15 minutes. You don’t need to stress about getting a visa just to travel.

Can Citizens of Yemen Get an E-Visa to Visit Turkey?

Yes, Yemen is one of the countries that can get an e-visa to Turkey. However, they can only get a single-entry visa to Turkey that allows 30 day visit only.

For the letter to be valid, the write of the said letter should include their Republic of Turkey ID number, home address, contact information as well as the details such as the purpose of the invitation and how long the person will stay in Turkey.

If the writer of the invitation letter is related to the person who is being invited, it should be mentioned in the letter. • Transit Purpose: Your primary reason for travel must be to transit through Turkey to another country.
  • Confirmed Onward Ticket: You need a confirmed ticket for your onward journey.
  • Short Layover: Your layover in Turkey must be less than 24 hours.

Who is Eligible for a Turkey Transit Visa?

For Yemeni citizens, Turkey has established specific eligibility criteria for obtaining a Turkey Transit Visa.

  • Clear Passport Scan: Obtain a scanned copy or a high-resolution photograph of the biographical data page of your passport.
  • Onward Flight Booking: Secure a confirmed flight reservation for your onward journey from Turkey.

Additional Documents (may be required):

  • Travel Health Insurance: Although not required for the visa application, obtaining travel health insurance is strongly advised for international travel.

These documents ensure a seamless application process for a Turkey Transit Visa for Yemeni citizens.

  • Normal Processing: Typically takes between 1 to 2 days.
  • Urgent Processing: Processes within 6 to 12 hours.
  • Super Urgent Processing: The fastest option, processing within 1 to 6 hours.

These options allow applicants to choose a processing time that best suits their travel schedule and urgency.

Do all Yemeni citizens need a transit visa for Turkey?

Only a few countries, including Yemen, require citizens to obtain a Turkey transit visa for transiting through Istanbul Airport on their way to destinations like Mexico, Panama, Colombia, or Venezuela. However, if your final destination is not one of these countries, and depending on the duration of your layover, you may not need a visa.

Can I leave the airport with a Turkey Transit Visa?

Unfortunately, a Transit Visa restricts you from staying within the designated transit area of Istanbul Airport. You won't be authorised to leave the airport and explore Istanbul.

Can I use a multiple-entry visa instead of a Transit Visa?

A multiple-entry visa allows for multiple entries into Turkey, while a Transit Visa is for a single transit only. If you plan to explore Istanbul during your layover, a multiple-entry visa might be a better option, but it typically requires a more complex application process and may have a higher fee.

Turkey halts wheat imports until October to protect producers

Business markets.

  • Travel & Tourism

Turkey is the world’s fifth largest wheat importer

Stock - Wheat

Turkey will halt wheat imports from June 21 until at least October 15 to protect farmers from price fluctuations, ensure domestic procurement of raw materials and create a favourable market for producers, the agriculture ministry said.

U.S. and European wheat futures dropped sharply on the news, both falling around 2 per cent with traders fearing Russian exporters would be hit hard by the move, compelling supplies earmarked for Turkey to be sold cheaply in other markets.

Turkey is the world’s fifth largest wheat importer, buying mostly from Russia.

In a statement, Turkey’s agriculture ministry said it would halt imports of wheat until at least Oct. 15 in accordance with foreign trade measures recommended by the Trade Ministry to protect producers, and added other measures would also be taken.

The measures would be implemented to “prevent our producers from being affected by price decreases due to supply density during the harvest period, to meet the raw material supply required for our exports from domestic production, and to ensure market stability in favour of producers,” it said.

European grain traders feared the import ban would take hold just as Russia’s new harvest this summer was set to enter world markets.

“Russia is likely to be the main loser on this,” a German grain trader said. “Russia supplies somewhere between 60-75 per cent of Turkey’s wheat imports and this ban looks like coming into force just as Russia’s new crop needs to be marketed.” “If Russian wheat cannot be sold in Turkey it will have to be offered elsewhere at low prices, which could mean other importers in the Middle East, Africa and Asia will benefit.” But this could also cut importer demand for European and U.S. wheat, traders said.

On Thursday, the ministry said the Turkish grain board (TMO) had set 2024 crop grain purchase prices for durum wheat, milling wheat and for barley.

The import halt could be extended beyond October 15 depending on “market conditions on that date”, the ministry added.

The Turkish ministry also said the exports of flour from domestically-produced wheat, banned since September 2018, would be allowed, and added barley, milling and durum wheat exports can now be done using a TMO export licence in a “controlled” way.

Turkey is expected to import 12 million metric tons of grain in the 2024/25 season including 8.5 million tons of wheat, according to figures from the International Grains Council.

Israel-Gaza latest: Hamas responds to ceasefire proposal - as Netanyahu casts doubt on deal

Joe Biden announced a surprise plan with three phases: the first would be a six-week ceasefire, the second the return of remaining hostages, and the third a reconstruction plan for Gaza. We'll be bringing you all the reaction to this throughout the day.

We will be focusing on our general election coverage tomorrow, but we'll be back with more live updates on the Israel-Hamas war next week.

Models Bella and Gigi Hadid are collectively donating one million dollars (£785,000) to support relief efforts, according to their agent.

The money will go to Heal Palestine, Palestine Children's Relief Fund (PCRF), World Central Kitchen (WCK), and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA).

The sisters have frequently been vocal in their support for Gaza, and their father Mohamed Anwar Hadid is himself Palestinian.

After Hamas's 7 October attack on Israel, Gigi, 29, offered her condolences to those affected.

"My thoughts are with all those affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day that innocent lives are taken by this conflict - too many of which are children," she wrote on Instagram.

"I have deep empathy and heartbreak for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it's a responsibility I hold daily."

She added: "While I have hopes and dreams for Palestinians, none of them include the harm of a Jewish person."

Bella, 27, said in May that she was "devastated at the loss of the Palestinian people and the lack of empathy coming from the government systems worldwide".

The United Nations food agency has said it is unable to feed most civilians in the southern Gaza city of Rafah.

Only 27,000 people in Rafah are currently being reached by the World Food Programme (WFP), according to its local director Matthew Hollingworth.

Roughly one million Palestinians are living in the area, many of them displaced from other parts of Gaza.

"The sounds, the smells, the everyday life are horrific and apocalyptic," Mr Hollingworth told journalists.

"People sleep to the sounds of bombing, they sleep to the sounds of drones, they sleep to the sounds of war, as now tanks roll into parts of central Rafah, which is only kilometers away. And they wake to the same sounds."

A ceasefire proposal consisting of three phases has been outlined by Joe Biden.

What do those phases entail, what have Israel and Hamas said about the plan and how does it compare to the last proposal?

Read more below...

The French president has backed the ceasefire proposal set out by Joe Biden last night.

Emmanuel Macron said he supported the proposal for "a durable peace" and that the war "must end".

France is also working with partners in the region on "peace and security for all", he said.

A high-level official has said Egypt is undertaking "intensive efforts" to "resume negotiations" for a ceasefire and hostage deal, according to a report.

The official, quoted by Al-Qahera TV, said this was "in light of the recent American proposition".

Last night, Joe Biden detailed a ceasefire and hostage deal proposal that he said Israel had put to Hamas.

However, Israeli officials have told our correspondents they were "blindsided" by the announcement.

If it works, then this will be a smart and cunning diplomatic move.

If it doesn't then President Joe Biden will look foolish.

He knows the huge risk of once again being taken for a ride by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Few knew that he was due to make this announcement.

Read more from our US correspondent Mark Stone below...

The Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS) has said 33 of its employees have been killed in Gaza since the war began.

Of those, it said 19 were killed "while performing their humanitarian duties".

The organisation today buried Mohammed Jihad Abed, an employee in the disaster risk management department.

He was killed in an Israeli attack on his home in Rafah last night.

American, Egyptian and Israeli officials will be meeting tomorrow in Cairo to discuss the reopening of Gaza's Rafah crossing, according to a report.

Egypt is insisting that Israel withdraw its forces from the crossing, a high-level source told Egypt's state-linked Al Qahera TV.

Israel seized the Gaza side of the crossing last month during its offensive in the city of Rafah.

Earlier this week, a member of Egypt's security forces was killed in a shooting incident near the Rafah crossing.

An Egyptian soldier stationed on a watchtower had reacted to seeing an armoured vehicle carrying Israeli troops cross a boundary line near the border while the soldiers pursued and killed several Palestinians, two Egyptian security sources told Reuters news agency.

The soldier opened fire and Israeli forces fired back, killing him, the sources said, sparking an exchange of gunfire between the two sides.

The British prime minister has praised the proposed ceasefire deal set out by Joe Biden, saying it is "welcome news".

Rishi Sunak said he hopes Hamas "takes this opportunity to take this deal that is on the table, [and] that would ensure hostages can be released and be back with their families".

He also expressed hopes to "flood Gaza with far more aid than has been getting in" and to "use that pause in the fighting to build a sustainable and lasting peace".

Mr Sunak joins a growing group of world leaders expressing support for the deal, which will only put more pressure on Israel and Hamas.
