Car is king in the United Arab Emirates, and most people elect to travel from Abu Dhabi to Dubai by private vehicle . Nevertheless, there are a few other options available if you don't fancy self-driving on the UAE's speedy highways.

In the future, when EtihadRail opens to the public, travelers in the UAE will have further options, with passenger trains zipping travelers from Abu Dhabi to Dubai in 50 minutes. The Abu Dhabi to Dubai line will be just one segment of EtihadRail's rail network, which is currently being constructed and will eventually link all the major towns in the country.

Although construction on the Abu Dhabi to Dubai line has been finished, there has been no announcement on if it will open earlier than the rest of the rail network, which is still being constructed.

Until then, the public bus service between the two cities is woefully underused by tourists despite being an excellent transport alternative , while organized tours (both group tours and private trips) offer day-trip transport to Dubai from Abu Dhabi for travelers short of time but who still want to add the Dubai sights into their Abu Dhabi stay.

1. From Abu Dhabi to Dubai by Car

Dubai skyline

The UAE is very car-centric, so hiring a car for journeying between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is a popular option. Road conditions and signage are excellent, and this is a very straightforward route, heading north for 140 kilometers.

You have to be a calm, confident driver to deal with the traffic congestion you'll inevitably run into along the way, and your fellow drivers, many of whom drive very aggressively and don't use their indicators when turning.

With the speed limit on UAE highways, 140 kilometers/hour , make sure to always drive in the far-right lane so as to not get involved with the overtaking speedster game.

Expect driving time to be around 90 minutes , depending on traffic conditions along the way and your destination in Dubai, and not including time spent finding somewhere to park once at your destination.

The most straightforward route from central Abu Dhabi is to follow Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Road (Highway E10) , east, out of the city. Just past Abu Dhabi Airport, this connects with Highway E11, which you simply follow north to Dubai.

Alternatively, you could leave Highway E11 at Al Samha and transfer onto Highway E311, which runs parallel all the way into Dubai.

2. From Abu Dhabi to Dubai by Group Tour

Camels on Jumeirah beach, Dubai

On a short Abu Dhabi trip, one of the easiest, hassle-free options of adding in Dubai as a day trip is to take a tour.

Plenty of local travel agencies organize Dubai sightseeing tours starting from Abu Dhabi.

With group tours, the itinerary often includes pickup from your Abu Dhabi hotel, all transport, and stops at some of Dubai's most famous tourist attractions, such as Al Fahidi Fort, Dubai Museum, the Burj Khalifa, Deira's Gold Souq, and Dubai Mall.

Transport for larger group tours is usually in a large air-conditioned coach.

The Dubai Sightseeing Day Trip from Abu Dhabi offers a full-day itinerary (approximately nine hours door-to-door) with transport by coach and the services of a professional guide. As well as stops at main Dubai sights of the Dubai Mall, Dubai Gold Souq, Dubai Spice Souq, and the Palm Jumeirah and photo stops outside the Burj Al Arab and Burj Khalifa, a short trip aboard an abra (traditional wooden water-taxi boat) on Dubai Creek is included in the schedule. Pickup and drop-off at your Abu Dhabi hotel can be arranged.

Another tour option is the Dubai City Tour from Abu Dhabi , which is a small-group tour taking a maximum of 10 passengers – a good group tour choice if you don't like big crowds. The tour includes pickup and drop-off from Abu Dhabi hotels and the services of a driver/guide. The trip's itinerary has photo stops or short 15-minute stops at Dubai Marina, the Burj Al Arab, the Palm Jumeirah and the Burj Khalifa, a two-hour stop at Dubai Mall, and other stops at Dubai Gold Souq and Dubai Spice Souq after a short ride across Dubai Creek on an abra.

3. From Abu Dhabi to Dubai by Bus

Palm Island in Dubai

The cheapest way to travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai is by public bus. The UAE's public bus system remains underused by tourists, many of whom seem to not realize that the country has a reliable, safe, and efficient public bus system between the major cities.

Traveling by bus does take longer than by private transport, but if you are not in a hurry, bussing to Dubai from Abu Dhabi is a solid transport option.

Buses to Dubai from Abu Dhabi are run by the Dubai Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) .

The E100 RTA bus service operates every 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi's Al Wahda Bus Station and arrives at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai. The bus journey takes two hours .

Al Wahda Bus Station is on Al Wahda Street (just behind Al Wahda Mall) in central Abu Dhabi.

To use the bus to Dubai, you need a Nol card (a pre-paid, rechargeable transport card that is also used on Dubai's metro and its in-city buses).

A dedicated booth at Al Wahda Bus Station sells Nol cards. On entering the bus, tap your Nol card on the machine to pay for your fare.

Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Dubai is near the Al Fahidi historical district along the bank of Dubai Creek. The Al Ghubaiba Metro Station is within easy walking distance from the bus station, as is the water-taxi stop for transport across the creek to Deira and the Dubai gold souq.

Buses are quite old and have no-frills seating similar to an in-city bus service, rather than an inter-city coach. They do all have air-conditioning, though.

Bring a sweatshirt onboard, as the air-conditioning is fierce, which means you'll be uncomfortably cold without an extra layer.

4. Abu Dhabi to Dubai by Private Tour

Madinat Jumeirah district in Dubai

For a fully customized Dubai day trip from Abu Dhabi, with an itinerary catered completely to your own interests, arrange a private tour. The transport vehicle will depend on your group size, ranging from car to minibus, and will be door-to-door from your hotel .

As there is no waiting for other passenger pickups and drop-offs at the beginning and end of the tour, this is a much quicker option than a group tour, so there is more time for actual sightseeing.

As well as quicker transport times, private tours allow you to spend your time visiting only the sights and tourist attractions you want.

Whether that means making it a full-on shopping tour, or ignoring Dubai's many malls completely to focus on the historic attractions in the Al Fahidi district and exploring the souks and sights of Deira, is completely up to you.

Depending on your needs, local tour companies can arrange private tours with or without a professional guide. If using a guide, the tour will cost more.

5. From Abu Dhabi to Dubai by Taxi

Dubai Marina

The main benefit of taking a taxi, instead of self-driving, from Abu Dhabi to Dubai is that you don't need to deal with the traffic conditions, or navigating once you're in Dubai, yourself.

The cheapest taxi option if you're traveling solo is to head to Al Wahda Bus Station in Abu Dhabi where there is a share-taxi stand . These share-taxis take four passengers and operate once full.

The arrival point for share-taxis in Dubai is either Ibn Battuta Bus Station (just southwest of Dubai Marina) or Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (in the central city, near Al Fahidi Historic District). Both have metro stations nearby. Check with the driver about which bus station he's heading to.

Private taxis are an expensive option for transport but are convenient for their door-to-door service. They can be hailed off the street or ordered by your hotel. Alternatively, you could use a ride-sharing app such as Uber.

How Do I Get From Abu Dhabi to Dubai? Public Transport & Transfers Explained

Whilst Abu Dhabi has a vast array of exciting places to visit and beautiful beaches , no trip to the United Arab Emirates is complete without a day or two in glitzy and glamorous Dubai.

One of the most frequently asked questions from visitors to the UAE is “how can I get from Abu Dhabi to Dubai on public transport?”

Here’s our guide on how to travel between the UAE’s two biggest cities – using public transport as well as some private transfer options.

How to Catch the Bus from Abu Dhabi to Dubai

Dubai to abu dhabi bus, free airline buses, auh express – abu dhabi airport to dubai, abu dhabi to dubai by taxi or rideshare app, airport transfer service from abu dhabi auh and dubai dxb airports, hire a car and drive from abu dhabi to dubai, taking a day tour abu dhabi to dubai, frequently asked questions on how to get from abu dhabi to dubai, what is there to do in abu dhabi and dubai, what public transport options are there in the uae.

Whilst Dubai has an excellent public transport system, there are currently no rail or metro links between Abu Dhabi and Dubai (although this is set to change in the near future with the rapid development of Etihad Rail ).

You can take a taxi (details outlined below) or a private hire car, or use the much cheaper public bus service. Here’s how:

There are three Intercity bus routes between Abu Dhabi and Dubai:

  • Route 100  – Leaves Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (in the Al Wahda area of the city) every 20 to 35 minutes. This service terminates at Al Ghubaiba Bus Station (connecting to Dubai Metro Green Line ) in Bur Dubai. The journey takes approximately 135 minutes.
  • Route 101  – Leaves Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (Al Wahda) every 20 to 35 minutes. This service terminates at Ibn Battuta Bus Station/Mall (connecting to Ibn Battuta Metro Station Red Line), and the bus ride takes around 90 minutes.
  • Route 102   – Leaves Mussafah Shabiya Bus Station every 40-60 minutes and terminates at Ibn Battuta Mall Bus Station/Mall (connecting to Ibn Battuta Metro Station Red Line). The journey takes approximately 115 minutes.

Use the RTA app or call 800 90 90 for the most up-to-date information.

What Does the Bus From Abu Dhabi to Dubai Cost?

A bus ticket is 25 AED one way.  Customers can use a NOL card, a Hafialt Card or pay cash at the bus station before embarking on the bus.

NB You can buy or top up the Dubai public transport card NOL from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station .

What Should I Expect On Board the Abu Dhabi to Dubai Bus?

These public buses are pretty luxurious in the scheme of things. They are all airconditioned, have information screens and priority seating for women, children and the disabled, as well as priority boarding lines.

The bus stops en route along the E11 Highway at Shahama Village and Samha, but otherwise, it is a fairly quick and direct service from the central station.

Note that wearing face masks is no longer compulsory on UAE transport.

Intercity buses parked at Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station

All of the above routes also run in reverse from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.

What does the bus from Dubai to Abu Dhabi cost?

  • All bus fares are 25 AED one way.  Customers can use their Dubai NOL card or pay cash at the bus terminal in Dubai. Nol cards can be purchased at bus and metro stations, from RTA customer service centres or online .
  • There is no pre-booking; you turn up on the day and pay as you board.

The intercity bus is the cheapest way and easiest way to get between the two cities if you’re travelling on a budget, without compromising on comfort, but not the quickest.

Alternative Ways to Get Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai

If you don’t fancy the long bus journey or it doesn’t fit your timings, then you can also consider these options to get between Abu Dhabi and Dubai:

Etihad Airways and Emirates both offer a complimentary bus service to get their customers between the major cities and their home airports. Inconveniently, neither runs an airport-to-airport service (this may change with a proposed new cooperation announced in 2023, though many months later, nothing seems to be actioned).

Both operate only as far as their ticket office in the opposing city; you’d need to then pay for an onward connection by bus/metro or taxi to your final destination.

The service is free only to those who hold the appropriate airline ticket (ie, to take the Emirates coach Abu Dhabi to DXB you must have an Emirates flight that day, or flying Etihad and landing in Abu Dhabi with your final destination Dubai, you take the Etihad coach to their office in Dubai).

  • You can see our complete guide here on how the FREE airline buses work , including the codes to use when booking your flights and the pickup points.

Emirates bus parked in Abu Dhabi takes passengers from Abu Dhabi corniche to Dubai International Airport

A new service from Zayed International Airport (the new name for Abu Dhabi International Airport), this is a paid shuttle bus to assist passengers not flying with Etihad in their onward connection to Dubai.

The AUH Express shuttle (Abu Dhabi Airport Express), will pick passengers up from outside AUH airport Terminal A and drop them at Ibn Batutta Bus Station in Dubai, from where they can connect with the Metro system in Dubai or catch a local taxi or bus.

The AUH Express Service costs AED 35 one way and now runs 24/7. You can pay for this at AUH airport, or pre-book your place on the shuttle before you travel.

On its launch, passengers travelling on WizzAir used to be able to use this service for free. However, we understand this grace period has ended, and you must now separately book your shuttle bus ticket with WizzTransfers – or simply use the booking link above to self-book (it’s cheaper than where WizzAir direct you!)

Although the AUH Express costs slightly more than the Intercity 101 Bus, it leaves from the airport directly, rather than the centre of Abu Dhabi city, making this a better choice for many passengers.

(NB, do look at the 102 intercity service, though, that is now routed past Terminal A – the Intercity service only costs AED 25 and takes only a few minutes longer to Dubai Ibn Battuta).

Travelling by public taxi is surprisingly more cost-effective than you might think compared to a booked car service. You can expect a public taxi from Abu Dhabi to Dubai to cost you around AED 350.

To book a taxi in Abu Dhabi, you should call the Centre for Integrated Transport on 600 53 53 53, download the Abu Dhabi Taxi App , or flag down a taxi on the street.

In our experience, Uber and Careem (ride-sharing services) cost more from Abu Dhabi to Dubai than a standard taxi, but it is always worth checking out pricing on these apps to see if you can get a better deal or don’t want to chance the meter running too high you’ll know your price is locked in.

You should note, though, that there is absolutely no problem using a metered taxi in the UAE; taxis are heavily regulated, and the correct use of the meter is necessary; you won’t get ripped off.

Pre-booked transfer services are handy if you land in one city but need to be at a specific location in the other. They work well when travelling in a larger group; you can split costs, and they provide the security and speed of a door-to-door service.

Some suggestions to try:

  • Welcome pick-ups are a highly recommended transfer service for all group sizes
  • Use GetTransfer to have private drivers bid on providing your journey to lock in the most competitive price

Note there is NO DIRECT public transport option between the UAE’s two major airports, making airport transfer services all the more appealing but also the most expensive of all your Abu Dhabi to Dubai transport options.

If you are travelling business class with Etihad, they still offer a luxury chauffeur service from AUH to Dubai.

It’s easy to hire a car in Abu Dhabi and drive yourself, either directly from the airport or at depots around the city. What is slightly more challenging is the driving!

  • We would recommend comparing car hire costs using discovercars.com

You need to be a confident driver in Abu Dhabi; it’s not quite as daunting in Abu Dhabi as it is driving in Dubai , but you need to be prepared for high freeway speeds and some inpatient driving techniques.

Plug your destinations in Google Maps, and navigation is straightforward – just be prepared for vast multi-lane freeways, the lack of proper indicator use, and you’ll be just fine!

Note if you are taking a car rental one way between the two cities, expect to pay a one-way drop-off fee.

If you are seeking to visit Dubai on a day trip from Abu Dhabi, rather than a transfer, you can use the same public transport methods we’ve mentioned above.

Alternatively, you may find joining a day tour to Dubai convenient. It’ll cost you a little more than taking the bus, but you will get to all the most important attractions, and many offer guided commentary. Here are some Dubai day trip from Abu Dhabi options to consider:

The only thing that you can consume on public buses in the UAE is water. This rule also applies to public taxis.

No, pets are not allowed on the intercity bus.

Compared to most other places in the world, taxis are relatively cheap.

No, the intercity bus service works on a first-come basis and cannot be pre-booked.

A one-way journey on the Abu Dhabi to Dubai intercity bus is AED 25. The airport bus, AUH Express costs AED 35.

Yes, Hafilat bus card can be used to tap and pay for intercity bus journeys to Dubai

A new rail service, Etihad Rail, is coming to the UAE, but it’s still not operational; there will not be an Abu Dhabi to Dubai train for some time yet. We’ll share with you further route information when it opens, but don’t expect it to take you from one city centre or airport to another, transfers will still be involved..

No, the Metro only extends as far as Dubai emirate. for any other emirate you must use ground transportation such as buses, taxis or private transfer vans.

  • Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Bur Dubai (Route 100) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station , approx. 120 minutes
  • Ibn Battuta Mall (Route 101) to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station approx. 90 minutes and Route 102 to Mussafah Shabiya Bus Station , approx. 1 hour 55 minutes.

All routes on the Intercity service cost 25 AED one way. You can pay cash at the counter or use your Dubai NOL card, which also works on Dubai buses and the Metro (but NOT on Abu Dhabi public transport. Abu Dhabi uses Hafilat bus cards).

Abu Dhabi to Dubai Bus

The Intercity Bus also runs in reverse from Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station (next to Al Wadha Mall) back to Al Ghubaiba or Ibn Battuta Mall and Mussafah Shabiya to Ibn Battuta.

Connecting to Dubai International Airport DXB

From Al Ghubaiba Bus Station, you can connect to DXB by:

  • Taking bus 33 or 42 to Terminal 1
  • Taking bus 31 to Terminal 2
  • Take the Metro green line to Burjuman, switch to the red line for Terminal 3
  • Catching a short taxi – approx 30 AED

Connecting to Zayed International Airport AUH

From Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station to the new Abu Dhabi international airport, AUH:

  • Take bus 2A from outside the station to Terminal A, leaves every 40 minutes 4 AED
  • Take a taxi – approx 30 minutes and cost 50AED

Looking to visit the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi from Dubai?

It is possible to catch public transport, though not all that straightforward if you are travelling with kids.  You would need to catch the Intercity bus as described above, then a local bus to the Grand Mosque; there are several routes, and the most direct is Route 32 , which costs 2 AED per person.

If you are planning to visit, say, the Louvre or Emirates Palace on an Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai, note none of these popular Abu Dhabi sites are anywhere near each other! It is easy enough to navigate your way around town by taxi, but the costs will add up.

It makes hiring a car from Dubai , a private driver or joining a tour start to make sense if you’re travelling in a group and want to make multiple stops.

Both the major airlines in the UAE – Etihad and Emirates – offer FREE services connecting the two cities. However, the bus stations are not in the most convenient of locations;  it’s not an airport-to-airport transfer!

Be aware of this if you have flights from DXB (Emirates) and AUH (Etihad); careful planning is needed, and pay attention to the airport codes we’re about to share!!!

Flying Emirates

If you’re flying Emirates but ultimately want to end in Abu Dhabi , your ticket can be issued to include the free transit bus through to your destination. The Emirates bus stop in Abu Dhabi is at their Khalidiya office on the Corniche (NB, this is nowhere near AUH airport!)

You can see the Emirates shuttle schedule here .

When you book your airline ticket, book the final location as ZVJ (not DXB) to guarantee your seat on the free bus. You must transfer immediately from DXB after your flight lands – no Dubai sightseeing on the way!

If you have an onward connection to AUH, the taxi back to the airport is about 80 AED extra.  We’re not aware of any baggage service at the bus stop (it is really just a car park). If you want to do Abu Dhabi sightseeing before your next flight, your bags will need to come with you or return to AUH first to store your bags.

You can organise a baggage transfer with Emirates to AUH for 200 AED, but by this point, you may as well have paid for a metered taxi door-to-door.

Flying Etihad

If you have an Etihad flight but you are leaving from Dubai, you can start your journey at the Etihad Travel Mall (Downtown Dubai).  The code you need to book your flight is XNB (instead of AUH).

Note that for business or First-class passengers on either airline, a complimentary private chauffeur is provided; just remember to confirm your booking at least 48 hours in advance to use this service.

Abu Dhabi City Skyline

So let’s switch it around, if you’re starting in Abu Dhabi but must depart from Dubai.

If you are flying with Emirates,  you can catch the  complimentary bus service  from outside their Khalidiya office to Dubai International Airport (DXB).

You can only catch the bus on the day of travel – book your departure from ZVJ.

If you have arrived at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) with Etihad Economy and want to connect straight to Dubai, you can arrange a seat on the  Etihad Coach ,  departing from AUH and taking you to the Etihad Travel Mall (Downtown Dubai) – use airport code XNB when booking.

If you have an onward flight from DXB, expect a taxi from Etihad Travel Mall to DXB to cost 40 AED.

The journey in either direction from Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes about 1 hour and 25 minutes, but for arrivals, you will likely be booked on a service at least 1 hour after your landing time. For departures, they will suggest catching the service listed at least 4 hours before your departure.

If you are flying with any other airline, sadly, these complimentary bus services are not available to you.

Burj al Arab Dubai | Family Travel in the Middle East

A new paid transport option has emerged by way of the AUH Expres s bus service . Passengers flying out of AUH no longer need to take a local bus into Al Wadha before connecting to an intercity bus to the airport.

Instead, passengers can now buy a bus ticket from Ibn Battuta Bus Statio n to the new Zayed International Airport for 35 AED ( or book it online in advance ) and board the comfortable air-conditioned AUH express coach.

The AUH express goes directly to AUH from Ibn Battuta Station in Dubai and only takes a little over 1 hour.

Coming the other direction, you can get an AUH Express ticket from inside Zayed International Airport or pre-purchase here and take the coach service to Ibn Battuta. From there, passengers can purchase a Nol and continue their journey onward using the Metro.

Just be mindful, that many flights land in the middle of the night in AUH; the AUH Express is running overnight, but the Metro may be closed at this time of night, you may need to complete your journey by taxi.

The most straightforward way to transit between the two cities is to hail a metered taxi.  They should take you door to door, but sometimes taxis will insist on pulling over at the first petrol station over the border to swap passengers to the taxi service for that Emirate. (It is not clear if there is a law that requires this or simply the taxi doesn’t want to be that far out of his zone; A Dubai taxi cannot pick up a new fare in Abu Dhabi and vice versa.)

From DXB to downtown Abu Dhabi, expect a fair between 275 – 350 AED.

If you hire a private driver, the same trip is likely to cost you 350 – 500AED, depending on the size of the vehicle booked.  The advantage is you can pre-book your exact time, and you may be able to add extras like car seats to your orders.

Driving in the UAE

If you would like to see the highlights of each city on a day trip, there are plenty of options for travelling in both directions.  Always check out reviews and see how long the tour will last.

As a family, be aware that quoted prices will be per seat on the bus or minivan; if you have a larger group, a private tour group could work out more economical.

Abu Dhabi Day Trips from Dubai

Dubai day trips from abu dhabi.

NB: If you are day-tripping from Dubai to Abu Dhabi for the Yas theme parks, don’t forget they offer a FREE shuttle service from numerous Dubai locations – learn more about this service over here.

If you are a confident driver, self-driving is the easiest way to get around in the UAE, offering you the most flexibility travelling between the two cities.

Most visitors self-driving will need to hire a car.  Even if you have friends living in the UAE, you need to have a UAE driver’s license to be covered by the vehicle’s insurance.  We recommend it is easier and safer for visitors to hire where overseas licenses are accepted on a tourist visa.

We recommend DiscoverCars.com to compare prices before booking .

Things to be mindful of when hiring a car in the UAE

  • The UAE drives on the right, with the steering wheel on the left.
  • Almost all cars have automatic transmissions.
  • The traffic goes FAST! It can be a little hectic with 6-lane freeways to one-way systems.
  • Car seats are required by law up to 4 years old (albeit enforcement of this law is not prevalent). Better safe than sorry BYO car seats, or you can hire from the car rental company.
  • Hiring a car one-way between the two cities is likely to incur an extra one-way hire fee.
  • The speed limit signs differ between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Once you’re on the freeway, you can travel at 140 km/hr. Dubai signposts this as 120 km/hr but includes a 20km/hr “buffer” before you’re fined. In Abu Dhabi, the posted limit is now the actual limit – i.e. max 140 km/hr on the freeway.
  • There are tolls in both Abu Dhabi and Dubai; Your rental company will have the car appropriately registered but will on-charge any toll fees to you as the driver.
  • Heading further into the desert? Read this guide if you are new to desert driving conditions in the extreme heat.

Could you imagine an ultra-fast shuttle service could cut the transit time between the two cities to a mere 15 minutes? A Hyperloop service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi has long been touted but has admittedly grown quiet in the last few years.

The more imminent reality is that a standard high-speed train service will commence between Abu Dhabi and Dubai in the near future. Etihad Rail will eventually connect all of the Emirates with freight and passenger services, as well as connect to neighbouring countries Oman and Saudi Arabia.

There’s no date given at this stage for the launch of the passenger service between Dubai and Abu Dhabi but it will certainly be a welcome transportation link between the two cities helping to cut down traffic and time.

A private hire car is the easiest way to get beyond the big cities and see the other Emirates as it allows you the flexibility to travel door to door.  If you are not a confident driver, however, or you prefer someone else to take the driving while you’re on holiday, then it’s perfectly understandable.

Plan the Perfect Abu Dhabi Day Trip From Dubai

A guide to day tripping to the capital of the united arab emirates while staying in dubai.

It’s an easy freeway drive of just over an hour between the two biggest cities in the UAE – Dubai and Abu Dhabi – making it an incredibly popular day trip destination for Dubai visitors.

On this page, we’re going to share with you exactly how you get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and the mustn’t-miss attractions to see in the UAE’s capital city.

Abu Dhabi From Dubai Tour Packages

What are the biggest tourist attractions to see in abu dhabi, transfers from dubai to abu dhabi, staying overnight in abu dhabi – hotel recommendations, more frequently asked questions abu dhabi day trips from dubai.

One of the most convenient ways to get between the two cities is to join an organized tour group.

They will arrange your pick-ups from Dubai and transfer you in air-conditioned comfort to Abu Dhabi’s most significant tourist sites (more on these below!)

There are so many different Abu Dhabi tours to choose from, so here’s what we suggest you look out for when choosing the best tours for one day in Abu Dhabi :

  • Is the tour private and personalised, a small group, or a large group?
  • Will you be picked up from your hotel, or need to meet at an arranged rendezvous point in Dubai?
  • Are meals included, or will you need to budget extra for a meal stop?
  • Can you add any additional stops not in the itinerary?

trip from abu dhabi to dubai

Larger group Abu Dhabi sightseeing tours may be more budget-friendly but will also give you limited flexibility in what you want to see and do in this beautiful city.

We highly recommend you book your tours through a reputable tour provider such as Get Your Guide . The reason being they have vetted all their tour providers giving you a variety of itineraries to choose from all in one spot. You can read reviews from past customers and most importantly they offer the ability to cancel up to 24 hours before for most tours, giving you flexibility in your plans.
  • Half Day Grand Mosque tour transfers to and from the Sheikh Zayed Mosque only from Dubai. This is a shared tour bus leaving Dubai around 8:45 AM and only taking 5 hours; you’ll be back to Dubai by early afternoon. Perfect if you only want to see the country’s largest mosque.
  • Abu Dhabi Full-Day Premium Sightseeing Tour – this is a great all-rounder tour for getting a taster of Abu Dhabi. You will, of course, see the mosque, but also a driving tour around the city’s other highlights, including the picturesque Corniche, Marina breakwater, Etihad Towers and a stop at Qasr al Watan, all with a guided tour in your chosen language. Note you’re given a lunch stop, but lunch is not included, excluded The Louvre.
  • Full-Day Private Tour Dubai to Abu Dhabi is best for a small group who wants to travel with a guide. Your itinerary will see you to the Mosque, Emirates Palace and Yas Marina Circuit with a buffet lunch thrown in ( but note, no Louvre or Qasr al Watan stops).
  • Abu Dhabi Full-Day Trip with Louvre & Mosque – if you just want to see the Grand Mosque and the Louvre, this is the tour for you. You get two-hour stops at each stop, which will be plenty of time if these are the main highlights you are after. It can be run as a small group with other guests or as an Abu Dhabi private tour.

Unfortunately, few tours will take you on a more flexible itinerary that takes you more in-depth through the souks and older parts of the city (not that there are many left, like in Dubai!). Most Abu Dhabi city tours from Dubai stick only to the main tourist attractions.

This will really depend on your interests, but undoubtedly the number one stop in Abu Dhabi is the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque – sometimes simply referred to as the Grand Mosque (not to be mistaken for Jumeirah Mosque in Dubai ).

We have a complete guide here on how to visit the Grand Mosque from Dubai .

There are tours that exclusively shuttle customers back and forward to the Grand Mosque, but you really need to see more in the city! (And be warned, the day-tripping buses from Dubai all seem to arrive en masse in Abu Dhabi, making it a very crowded experience by mid-morning).

Main cultural attractions in Abu Dhabi

In addition to the Grand Mosque, the next three most important tourist destinations in Abu Dhabi are:

  • The Louvre Museum Abu Dhabi –  a stunning Museum on Saadiyat Island that covers the “History of Humanity” in a superb waterfront setting is one of the best places to visit in Abu Dhabi after the Mosque. Just the building itself is a Middle East masterpiece. NB Closed Mondays.
  • Qasr al Watan   – the Presidential Palace of the United Arab Emirates is an incredible new building to rival the beauty of the Grand Mosque. Open for daily tours, it’s situated at the end of the Abu Dhabi Corniche (about the furthermost point from Dubai!). Can occasionally be closed at short notice for diplomatic visits.
  • Qasr al Hosn   – a brilliant insight into the history of the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi from early Bedouin days and ancient history through to the discovery of oil, federation and the modern-day city – tours, special workshops and daily events are offered, but few tours seem to include this important stop on their pre-arranged itineraries.
You can find a complete guide to Abu Dhabi’s best cultural attractions on our sister site Abu Dhabi Travel Planner.

Other sightseeing in Abu Dhabi

For general sightseeing, some popular attractions you might want to include:

  • Step inside the stunning Emirates Palace Hotel. You can get some amazing snaps on the front steps or head inside to enjoy some local delicacies, from camel burgers to gold leaf tea, at one of Abu Dhabi’s most opulent buildings. A respectable dress code (knees covered) is required for men and women.
  • Capture the city from above at Observation Deck at 300 – the city’s highest observation tower from Level 74 of Etihad Towers, ( Conrad Etihad Towers ). Not the city’s tallest building – that building does not have an observation floor – but nonetheless, Etihad Towers is a great place to get your bearings over the city and lovely for a morning or afternoon tea stop.
  • Visit the Founders Memorial and walk along the Marina Breakwater for some fresh air and spectacular city views.
  • Visit the newly opened National Aquarium Abu Dhabi and explore the new Al Qana Waterfront district.
  • Take a trip out to the Falcon Hospital a great insight into local culture and a really worthwhile stop if you can join one of their twice-daily Falcon World Tours.
  • Enjoy a unique walk through the wetlands of Abu Dhabi at Jubail Mangroves Park – it sits between Yas Island and Saadiyat Island, a superb nature stop you won’t believe is so near the city.
  • Wahat al Karama – the war memorial that sits opposite the Grand Mosque. A poignant spot and a beautiful photo opportunity of both the memorial and the Mosque.
  • Some tours may still include a stop at the Heritage Village – but in all honesty, we’d recommend Qasr al Hosn above as the better and more comprehensive stop for history buffs.
  • Desert Safari’s in Abu Dhabi are just as popular as in Dubai, though you’ll get a pretty similar desert experience with camel rides, dune bashing and a traditional dinner, so just choose one of the other.

Yas Island Theme Parks & Grand Prix Circuit Abu Dhabi

For theme park fun, you really need to allow at least 4 to 6 hours to tackle even one of the mega theme parks on Yas Island – these are Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros World Abu Dhabi , Ferrari World and SeaWorld .

Technically, you could squeeze in a theme park alongside a day trip to the cultural sites, but we highly recommend you make a full day for each experience so you are not rushed. There’s really no time to fully enjoy a water park or rollercoaster day if you’re being rushed back on a bus.

You can find our complete guide to visiting the Yas Island theme parks in Abu Dhabi from Dubai here.

Ferrari World on Yas Island Abu Dhabi

Yas Island is also home to the famous Yas Marina Grand Prix track. You may not get time on a day tour to do much more than snap some photos, but motorsports fans should put aside extra time on a day trip to Abu Dhabi to take part in either a behind-the-scenes guided tour of the track or, even better a circuit driving experience.

For something truly unique, on a Monday and Wednesday night from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM, you can walk, run or cycle the Yas Marina Grand Prix track! Join in with local residents to enjoy this truly unique track experience – completely FREE! See the timetable and any planned track closures here.

If you are seeking to self-tour in Abu Dhabi, all you will need to arrange is getting yourself by public or private transport to Abu Dhabi or arrange a hire car.

By road, the journey from Dubai to Abu Dhabi takes between 1 and 2 hours, depending on your mode of transport and exact location. The cities sit about 160kms apart.

This really detailed guide sets out all of your transport options getting between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Note that the 100 and 101 Intercity Buses will take you to the central bus station in Abu Dhabi , Al Wadha; all the tourist attractions we have set out here are quite spread out over the city, so you will then need to take local bus services (and get yourself a Hafilat card ) or several taxis to jump between the various sightseeing destinations.

Another new option for visiting only the Louvre and Qasr al Watan is the Cultural Express . This bus service leaves from Sheraton, Mall of the Emirates, at 9:00 AM and takes passengers to these two Abu Dhabi cultural attractions before shuttling guests back to Dubai, arriving around 8:00 PM.

There’s a further detailed guide here to public transport within Abu Dhabi.

Taxi from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

If budget permits, you can simply take a standard Dubai Hala taxi from off the street in Dubai, or book one on the Careem App to your location

Depending on your pick-up and drop-off points, this should cost you around 300 AED from Downtown Dubai to Abu Dhabi Airport.

From Dubai Airport to the Abu Dhabi Corniche area, you are looking at more like 400 AED. All taxes run on a meter and are a reliable form of transportation in the UAE.

Hiring your own car from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Hiring your own car will grant you the most flexibility but may not be the cheapest for only 1 day.

You will also need to drive on Dubai’s freeways which can be challenging at times with the fast and heavy flow of traffic!

With the (very) high-speed limits on the E11 Freeway, it is a quick drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi. Most tourist locations, other than in the city centre of Abu Dhabi, have free visitor parking (otherwise, you’ll need a few dirhams in change for meters or use a parking app ).

Hiring a private driver for an Abu Dhabi day tour from Dubai

If you are not interested in a private tour but want someone to drive you from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, you can use ride-sharing apps such as Uber or Careem or try these driver options:

  • Private driver from Dubai to Abu Dhabi – the best choice if you’re after a reliable driver service one way to Abu Dhabi (NB this is just a point-to-point driver, they won’t take you around all the tourist sites)
  • Get Transfer – is a great app to plan your daily driver needs. You can ask drivers to “bid” on your journey cost and choose the driver that fits your needs best in terms of vehicle, pricing and availability.
  • Welcome Pickups – a good site for sourcing reliable, English-speaking driver services to and from Dubai

If time permits, an overnight stay in Abu Dhabi is essential to fit everything we have mentioned here – a day tour to Abu Dhabi will barely scratch the surface

  • If you are visiting the theme parks on Yas Island, then the Yas Plaza Hotels should be your top pick – there are several to choose from; our favourite for a unique experience is staying in the W Abu Dhabi – Yas Island , which straddles the Yas Marina GP race track.
  • Alternatively, try two newly opened hotels – The WB Abu Dhabi (Warner Bros. themed hotel) is perfectly located for accessing WB World and Yas Waterworld, whilst the Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island is the top choice for the happening new area of Yas Bay if you want to be surrounded by restaurants and nightlife.
  • If your main focus is seeing the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, there are several hotels in an area known as Bab Al Bahr – just on the mainland before you cross to Abu Dhabi island. Why not try the Fairmont Bab al Bahr , or the Shangri-La Hoel Qaryat Al Beri .
  • A great budget alternative (still 4-star!) is Traders Hotel Qaryat Al Beri . These are all glorious spots to watch the sunset behind the Grand Mosque to the west. There are lots of dining choices in the Souk at Qaryat Al Beri or take a traditional abra ( paid ) across the Grand Canal to the Venetian Village at the Ritz Carlton for a great range of restaurants and buzzing nightlife.

The Ritz Carlton Abu Dhabi Grand Canal

  • If you’d like to mix in some resort sunshine with your stay, Saadiyat Island , adjacent to where you will find the Louvre Abu Dhabi, is our top pick. Here there is a string of 5 luxury resorts to choose from along Saadiyat Beach . They don’t come cheap but are simply stunning (and maybe just a few dirhams cheaper than their Dubai counterparts – worth checking!)
  • On a budget? There are plenty of inner-city hotels in Abu Dhabi offered with reputable brand names attached that you can comfortably get a room for two under 300 AED per night. You can try Al Maha Arjaan by Rotana, Ramada Abu Dhabi Corniche or Southern Sun Abu Dhabi .
There’s a good guide here to understanding the different areas to stay in Abu Dhabi.

Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

The cooler months of winter, from around November to April, are the best time to visit Abu Dhabi and the UAE for the most comfortable experience and pleasant weather.

We’re never going to deny the UAE in the summer months is HOT!! That said, not impossible to visit. Prices are cheaper, and crowds are low. An Abu Dhabi tour will largely see you in air-conditioned comfort. The Grand Mosque will involve a fair bit of walking outside but stops at the Louvre, and Qasr Al Watan, for example, will see you largely indoors. Take plenty of water with you and something to protect your head out in the sun.

No, the rules requiring regular PCR tests and the use of the Al Hosn App were abolished on 7 November 2022. You can now freely move between Dubai and Abu Dhabi without a border crossing and without needing a PCR test result to show on the Al Hosn App. Learn more about the current entry rules to Abu Dhabi on the Visit Abu Dhabi website .

How to Pick the Best Abu Dhabi Tour from Dubai (+Our Experience)

Thinking of visiting Abu Dhabi from Dubai for a day and wondering which tour to choose? We had the exact same question on our recent trip – what is the best Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai?

After several hours of research, comparing dozens of itineraries, and reading hundreds of reviews, I can tell you that the choice is overwhelming. There are hundreds of Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai, with widely varying itineraries. You have to read in detail which places you actually visit and which are not more than a quick photo stop. Furthermore, often they also list the sights which you only pass by…

You’ll find private tours and (small) group tours, full-day tours, or those that only take a couple of hours… There is one thing in common – pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. But the rest of the itinerary can vary from short stops at some local low-key markets to thorough visits to some of the most impressive landmarks…

In this article, we share our hand-picked selection of Abu Dhabi tours that we shortlisted for our own trip , as well as a detailed description of the tour we ultimately chose. I hope that this guide will save you time and help you choose the best tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi and have a truly unforgettable experience.

TIP: If you don’t want to read the entire article and simply want to see the best of Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai, we recommend this highly-rated tour . It’s the tour that we chose and it was perfect. It brings you to the three main landmarks in Abu Dhabi – Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan – and you actually get to visit each of these places and not just pass by or see from a distance, as with many other tours.

Best guided tours to Abu Dhabi from Dubai - helpful info and tips based on personal experience and research

Why Visit & What to See on Abu Dhabi Day Trip

Abu Dhabi is the capital city of the United Arab Emirates. It’s also the richest of the seven Emirates, home to some of the most prestigious projects and remarkable architectural landmarks. So no trip to the UAE would be complete without at least a short introduction to this beautiful city!

Just like Dubai, Abu Dhabi is a quickly growing city with many new attractions, one more impressive than the other. So you have to understand that there is no way to see all the best places in Abu Dhabi on a day trip from Dubai. There are simply too many options and you would need several days in Abu Dhabi if you want to see all the top sights.

So when looking for a day tour to Abu Dhabi from Dubai, you have to decide which of the top sights and attractions you absolutely do not want to miss. Once you make the choice, it becomes easier to pick the right tour that fits your interests.

Here are some of the TOP attractions in Abu Dhabi:

  • Sheikh Zayed Mosque – the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi, included in pretty much all Abu Dhabi tours.
  • Qasr Al Watan – UAE Presidential Palace (sometimes also referred to as the Royal Palace) – an actual visit inside is only included with very few tours.
  • Etihad Towers . Many tours pass here, but only a few include a visit to the Observation Deck.
  • Louvre Abu Dhabi – the largest museum in the Gulf region, among others, displaying artworks from The Louvre and other top museums in Paris . There are just a few tours that visit here.
  • Yas Island where you can find the following theme parks: Ferrari World , Yas Waterworld , Warner Bros. World , and SeaWorld . This is not the best place to visit on a day trip since you could easily spend a day at each of these theme parks and still not see it all. So if tours from Dubai include Yas Island in their itinerary, at best, it’s a half-day visit to Ferrari World (most tours that mention Ferrari World, usually only stop for a picture at the parking in front of it).

Here are some additional sights sometimes included in some Abu Dhabi tours:

  • Abu Dhabi Corniche – a waterfront road with bike paths and a nice pedestrian promenade. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Founders Memorial – a monument. Most tours just pass by here.
  • Emirates Palace – this luxury hotel (full name – Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental ) is one of the most expensive hotels ever built. Some tours include a visit, but most just drive by.

Good to know: The best Abu Dhabi day tours include a visit to 2-3 of the ‘TOP attractions’. Depending on the tour and how much time you spend at the main landmarks, they sometimes include one or two short stops at some of the ‘additional sights’ listed above.

However, some tours only seem to offer great value at first sight. When you look deeper, you realize that the majority of your time will be spent in the car or with short stops at ‘cultural’ attractions, such as a vegetable and dates market, Abu Dhabi Heritage Village, or local art galleries. While this could be a nice addition to the main sights, there are so many better things to do with just a day in Abu Dhabi than spend your precious time shopping… So choose your tour wisely!

Below, you can find our hand-picked selection of the best Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai.

Best Abu Dhabi Tours from Dubai

As I said, there are so many Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai that the choice can look daunting. Based on the research I did for our recent trip, I made a selection of just a few VERY BEST options. This was my personal shortlist.

Here are some of the best-rated Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai , with a short overview of just the main landmarks that you actually visit:

  • Premium Full-Day Sightseeing Tour (+-9-10 hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque, Etihad Towers, and Qasr Al Watan. This is the tour we chose and can highly recommend if you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in a day. You can also book this same tour including lunch at a traditional restaurant (we had lunch there too and it was excellent).
  • Full Day Tour with Ferrari World (+-10 hrs). This tour includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Ferrari World, as well as a stop at Heritage Village. If you want to see the Mosque and ride some of the fastest rollercoasters in the world, this is by far the best tour. Most others only include a photo stop at Ferrari World.
  • Full Day Trip with Mosque & Louvre (+- 9hrs). Includes a visit to Sheikh Zayed Mosque and Louvre Abu Dhabi.
  • Half Day Tour (+- 5hrs). This popular tour only visits the famous Sheikh Zayed Mosque. It’s a good option if you are really short on time.

Good to know: Most of the tours listed here are small-group tours, but they are also available as private tours . You can choose from different options once you select the number of people and travel dates.

Further below, you can read a short review of the tour that we chose and see some more pictures of the places that we visited on this Abu Dhabi day trip.

Review of Our Abu Dhabi Sightseeing Tour from Dubai

As already mentioned, we chose this highly-rated guided tour for our Dubai to Abu Dhabi day trip.

Just to be clear – we do not organize these tours or have anything to do with the company that runs them. Like you, we are just travelers who do their own research, pay for the experiences we like to have, and hope that we made the right choice.

This Abu Dhabi tour was not cheap, but it brings you to the most impressive places in Abu Dhabi. We felt that it offers really good value. If you want to see the most important landmarks of Abu Dhabi in just a day, then you really cannot go wrong with this tour.

Here is what our Abu Dhabi tour looked like:

Pick up in Dubai & Drive to Abu Dhabi

We booked the tour starting at 8:45 AM. The evening before the tour, I received a WhatsApp message from the tour company informing us that they would pick us up at 8:15 AM.

The driver was on time and we stopped to pick up two other people along the way. He then brought us all to yet another hotel where we transferred to a small bus (our group had 18 people).

Good to know: The drive from Dubai to Abu Dhabi normally takes about 1.5 hours, but it can also take much longer due to busy traffic. The same on the way back.

PRO TIP: When booking a full-day tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi, don’t make any other plans for that day – that way, you don’t have to worry about busy traffic or potential delays. If you are planning a half-day trip , I would also foresee some buffer time, or opt for an afternoon tour (or a ‘sunset’ tour, as they call it) – that way, you can still do something else in Dubai in the morning.

Abu Dhabi Corniche

Drive through Abu Dhabi

On the way to Abu Dhabi, our guide informed us that we would start our tour with Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace and visit Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque at the end of the day. This is because there was a big cruise ship in town and since pretty much all visitors go to the Mosque, it’s extremely crowded in the morning.

This was a good decision, indeed. By the time we got to the Mosque, it was just pleasantly lively. I can’t imagine what it must look like in the mornings when several gigantic cruise ships are visiting.

On the way to the President’s Palace, we passed Yas Island and could see the famous Ferrari World and other attractions in the distance. We also saw Saadiyat Island with the Abu Dhabi Louvre – also from quite far away. Once in the city center, we drove past the Corniche – Dubai waterfront – and saw the Founders Memorial as well as the Emirati Palace.

You only get to see all these places from the bus, but it gives you an idea of what Abu Dhabi is like.

Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Abu Dhabi

Qasr Al Watan

Abu Dhabi’s Presidential Palace sits in a huge opulent complex by the sea overlooking the city in the distance. The main highlight here is Qasr Al Watan .

This magnificent palace might remind you of the famous Taj Mahal in India, but this one was built just recently – between 2010 – 2017. Its architecture and grandeur will take your breath away!

The palace was built using some of the finest materials including Italian marble, gold, Swarovski crystals, and gigantic handmade carpets. It is absolutely magnificent and I would even say that it’s one of the most beautiful buildings on the planet.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand why it’s not as popular as the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. These two places are just as impressive and both are absolutely not to be missed in Abu Dhabi!

Qasr Al Watan - one of the main landmarks in Abu Dhabi UAE

Our tour guide gave us a short introduction to the Palace and explained where to find the ‘must sees’. After that, we had about more than an hour to explore the palace and its grounds on our own.

This is something I really liked about this tour – we got just plenty of information, but also plenty of free time at each of the landmarks visited.

Good to know: While it is a working palace, it’s mostly used for ceremonial functions and big political gatherings. So the palace is open to the public, except if there is some special political event or a visit by another head of state.

You will have to go through airport-style security here, but you can simply leave all your belongings on the tour bus and just take your camera with you.

Qasr Al Watan Royal Palace of UAE - Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai

Etihad Towers

The next stop on our itinerary was the Observation Deck at the Etihad Towers . There are five skyscrapers here, of varying height. We were told that the five towers represent unity, like the five fingers of a hand. I also read somewhere that they refer to several important Arabic symbols, such as falconry and swords.

In addition to their unique architecture and symbolism, Etihad Towers offer stunning 360° views of the city and the Arabian Gulf from the Observation Deck at 300 meters . It’s located on the 74th floor of Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers Hotel .

The views from here are spectacular and – in my opinion – more impressive than from most of the viewpoints in Dubai, including the views from Burj Khalifa.

Right below, you can see the entire Presidential Palace complex as well as the Emirates Palace and several other luxury hotels, including Rixos Marina Abu Dhabi which looks like a copy of the famous Atlantis The Palm in Dubai . The seashore and Corniche make the views even more special.

Good to know: Etihad Towers Observation Deck is supposedly just a short stop of about half an hour, out of which you have about 15 minutes to enjoy the views at the top (which sounds little but is actually plenty). However, depending on the queue at the elevators, it might take longer.

View from Etihad Towers Observation Deck - Abu Dhabi day trip from Dubai

After the visit to Etihad Towers, we drove to Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. There is an underground mall here – Souq Al Jami – where you can find a big food court with a wide variety of restaurants.

Before we headed for lunch, our guide quickly checked if everyone was dressed ‘acceptably’ for the Mosque visit and went to get some Abaya (long black dress) and scarves for women.

If you wear long pants/skirt, a blouse that covers your arms completely, and have a scarf to cover your hair, you don’t need this dress. But if your clothes are just not long enough or see-through (even a bit), they recommend wearing the Abaya. So I opted for that, just to be safe.

If you choose the tour that includes lunch , you will have a traditional lunch at the Michelin-star Al Khayma Heritage Restaurant. Otherwise, you can decide where you want to eat when you get there. You will find all the famous fast-food chains here as well as Italian and Mexican restaurants, etc. However, it’s your chance to try some really good Arabian food so we recommend that you go to Al Khayma.

We had lunch at this restaurant, following our guide’s recommendation and everything was delicious.

I read in some reviews that people felt lunch was a bit rushed, but we had about 1h15 which was plenty. I even found the time to quietly put on the Abaya before meeting the guide at the agreed time and place.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

Sheikh Zayed Mosque is the most famous landmark in Abu Dhabi and a must-see! It’s the finest example of Islamic architecture and is absolutely breathtaking, both outside as well as inside.

As a non-Muslim, you can only visit part of the Mosque, but no worries – you can see the most impressive parts. You are also allowed to view the main worship hall which is nothing short of remarkable.

Here, you can see the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet, ornate decorations, and several impressive Swarovski chandeliers. It’s also incredibly spacious and can accommodate about 40,000 people inside!

If you are a Muslim, you can also go to pray inside, but during the week, the main hall seemed to be empty. The main prayer hall is closed to visitors between noon and 3 pm on Fridays, so tours try to visit before or after that.

Abu Dhabi tour from Dubai - Sheikh Zayed Mosque

As mentioned earlier, the Grand Mosque is one place that is included in all tour itineraries and is visited by pretty much every tourist who sets foot in Abu Dhabi, even if just for a few hours. This means that the Mosque is always extremely busy. Tickets have to be reserved in advance, for a specific time slot, etc.

Because of really bad traffic in Dubai on the day of our visit (it rained the day before which only happens a few times a year and leaves the area in chaos :)), we were way too late for the time slot booked. No worries, though. Everything was rearranged by the tour company while we were having lunch.

We entered without any wait at all and our guide made sure that we had plenty of time inside the Mosque (about 15-20 minutes with a guide and more than an hour on our own).

I liked that they didn’t rush us or cut the tour short and gave us the full experience. This meant that we were back in Dubai later than planned but that was no big deal since it was a full-day trip anyway.

Good to know: Also here, you will have to go through airport-style security. As mentioned before, there is a dress code as well. In general, they recommend long, loose ankle-length trousers or skirts. As a minimum, for men, shoulders and knees have to be covered. For women, the rules are stricter and you have to cover up everything except your face, hands, and feet (which means that sandals are ok).

Our tour provided Abaya dresses and scarves for women, which just made things simpler.

Drive back to Dubai

After our visit to the Mosque, the shuttle brought us back to Dubai. There was plenty of time to rest (or even sleep) on the bus.

Just as in the morning, the bus dropped us off at a place where they had private drivers waiting to take everyone back to their hotels. This way, nobody had to wait longer than necessary. The tour was really well organized and I couldn’t fault anything.

The only issues we had that day were related to exceptionally hard rain that left the roads blank and resulted in really bad traffic. Knowing that it only rains a few days per year in the UAE, the risk of you encountering the same is pretty low. Still, as mentioned before, I wouldn’t make any other plans for the evening – that will make your tour more relaxed.

Abu Dhabi Tour with Kids

If you are travelling with children and wonder if you can do a day tour to Abu Dhabi with kids, my answer is yes, of course. Most tours allow children of any age.

However, which tour to choose also depends on your family situation, how many kids you have, how old they are, etc. In addition, consider how well your children can handle a long bus ride, explore the landmarks, and – not to underestimate – practicalities such as the heat or not being able to use the bathroom or eat whenever they fancy.

That being said, if you can keep the kids busy in the car for 1.5- 2 hours and they can behave at the Mosque or the Presidential Palace, I see no reason why you couldn’t take them.

We did this Abu Dhabi tour with teens and – while they were the only kids in our group – we had no issues whatsoever. They were also truly fascinated by the incredible architecture we saw and truly enjoyed the day (having their phones for the long ride definitely helped though).

When I asked them about their top experiences on this trip, the Abu Dhabi day trip was in their top 3, together with a camel ride in the Dubai desert and a boat ride on the Burj Lake . They also really enjoyed Atlantis Aquaventure Waterpark but ‘ranked’ the Abu Dhabi day trip as a more special experience.

TIP: If you want to take a day trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi with children, consider booking a private tour. As already mentioned, pretty much all the tours we listed in this article can also be booked as private tours. It will be much more relaxing and you will spend less time in the car since they will pick you up from the hotel and drive directly to Abu Dhabi rather than gathering the whole group in a bus.

Alternatively, look into tours that visit the Mosque and maybe Ferrari World or one of the other theme parks on Yas Island (e.g. this tour ). That way, your tour has something for everyone in the family. That said, with very young kids, consider height restrictions for rollercoasters and similar.

Practical Info & Tips for Abu Dhabi Tours

Here is some additional information you may want to know when considering a tour from Dubai to Abu Dhabi:

  • Most Abu Dhabi tours from Dubai include a pick-up/drop-off at your hotel . Keep in mind that the pick-up time can be up to an hour earlier than the official tour starting time (the same as the drop-off).
  • Pretty much all tours in the UAE include drinking water (on our tour, there was a large cool box full of water on the bus).
  • Keep in mind that entry to Sheikh Zayed Mosque might be restricted at certain times of the day during Islamic holidays and also on Fridays. Qasr Al Watan might also be closed if there are any political meetings at the palace. That’s another advantage of going with a tour – they know the schedules and adjust the visit. Still, you can never exclude a tiny chance of some last-minute changes when visiting places like that.
  • Some Abu Dhabi tours also include Abaya dresses for women at Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, but that’s not always the case. So be sure to double-check that in the tour description if you need one.
  • There is no strict dress code at other places in Abu Dhabi, only at the Mosque. However, if you are visiting the Presidential Palace, they also recommend loose long pants or a skirt and a modest blouse/shirt that covers your shoulders.
  • Take some sunscreen lotion and sunglasses with you. A sun hat can be a good idea as well.
  • Pack only what you need – it will be easier to go through security checks everywhere. Furthermore, you can safely leave other belongings (food, sunscreen lotion, etc.) on the tour bus.
  • There are free bathroom facilities at all the sights we visited on this tour, but not on a bus. They also don’t stop anywhere along the way.
  • You get about 60-75 minutes for lunch on this tour, but depending on the traffic, it can be quite late in the day. So if you need some more energy during the day, pack some small snacks with you.

PRO TIP: There’s one thing we noticed when booking our tour to Abu-Dhabi is that on some days, prices were much higher than on others (this could be related to school holidays, public holidays, and similar). So if you are somewhat flexible, check a few different dates when booking the tour – sometimes, travelling a day earlier or later might save you quite some money.

I want to add that visiting Abu Dhabi was one of the main highlights of our recent trip to Dubai. It’s such a rich and memorable experience, and I’m so glad that we did it. Yes, it was a long day, but it felt rather relaxed and we came home with a much better appreciation of the UAE culture. Highly recommended!

If you want to book the same tour as the one that we did and described here, you can do so via this link through GetYourGuide . This is the website we personally use for all our tour and ticket bookings worldwide and I can only recommend it. We booked all tours and experiences in Dubai through them.

If you've already tackled the best things to do in Dubai , how about exploring some of the neighboring emirates? You’ll find everything from mosques and museums to mountain bike trails and ziplines within day-trip distance.

Here are the best places to discover from  Dubai  in a day.

It takes just 90 minutes to get to Abu Dhabi from Dubai

With its onion-shaped domes and glowing white marble, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is a must-see. Located 90 minutes from Downtown Dubai, the mosque runs free tours that take place daily, except during Friday prayers. Over on Saadiyat Island, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is an essential stop for art and architecture aficionados . Designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Jean Nouvel, the building is as much of a draw as the 600 artworks on display.

How to get to Abu Dhabi from Dubai: A taxi costs around Dhs200 ($55) each way. You can also catch a public bus (route E100 or E101) for Dhs28 ($7) one way.

Mleiha is home to an important archaeological site

Located in Sharjah's central region, Mleiha is one of the most important archaeological sites in the United Arab Emirates . The Mleiha Archaeological Centre details the history of the region from the Paleolithic era and offers guided tours of the Bronze Age tombs and pre-Islamic forts. Feeling adventurous? Explore the wild beauty of the desert during a guided trek, a 4WD tour or a fat bike tour, or paraglide from one of Mleiha’s tallest peaks.

How to get to Mleiha from Dubai: Mleiha is 47 miles (75km) east of Dubai. You can rent a car, or check with the archaeological center in advance to see if return transport is available.

Here, you can rent kayaks and pedalos to cruise the turquoise waters.

How to get to Hatta from Dubai: You can rent a car to drive to Hatta, 84 miles (135km) southeast of Dubai, or take the E16 bus.

Sharjah is a cultural hub, packed with museums and galleries

Start at the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization , which displays more than 5000 artifacts from the Muslim world, and then wander down to the Sharjah Heritage Museum for an insight into Emirati culture. A 10-minute stroll away, Sharjah Art Museum is a must for fans of contemporary Arab art.

How to get to Sharjah from Dubai: A taxi costs around Dhs90 ($24.50) each way. There are several public bus routes that go in that direction too (E303, E303A, E304, E306, E307 or E107A), which costs Dhs10 ($2.75).

Visit the Unesco World Heritage-listed oasis in Al Ain

Filled with more than 147,000 date palms, the Unesco World Heritage-listed Al Ain Oasis was once a vital stop on the caravan route crisscrossing the Arabian Peninsula. You can stroll the shaded walkways, see how the ancient falaj (irrigation) network carries water to the palms and visit the hi-tech eco-center. Stop by Al Ain Palace Museum , where Sheikh Zayed once held court, and the photogenic Al Jahili Fort , built in 1891 to defend the city’s precious plantations.

How to get to Al Ain from Dubai: Al Ain is located in the emirate of Abu Dhabi, around 95 miles (150km) southeast of Dubai. Public bus E201 runs between Dubai and Al Ain's bus station and takes 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Kalba is the perfect day trip for wildlife watching

This east coast exclave of Sharjah is a great place to see some of Arabia’s elusive wildlife. Keen birdwatchers should bring their binoculars, as Khor Kalba’s mangroves are an important habitat for the beautiful white-collared kingfisher. On the outskirts of the city, Al Hefaiyah Mountain Conservation Centre is home to critically endangered Arabian leopard, Arabian wolf, tahr and desert lynx. At the nearby Kalba Bird of Prey Centre , free-flying demonstrations take place twice a day in the outdoor amphitheater (except Mondays).

The starkly beautiful Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE’s tallest peak at 6345ft (1934m). To enjoy the area’s craggy charms, take a scenic drive up the wickedly winding mountain road. There are rest stops along the route, and the viewing deck at 4100ft promises even more phenomenal views. If you're after an adrenaline rush in RAK, you can launch from the Jebel Jais Flight Zip Line , the world's longest, which reaches speeds of up to 95mph (150km/h). You could also tackle the half-mile-long Jebel Jais Via Ferrata , a four-hour experience that includes three thrilling ziplines of its own.

How to get to Jebel Jais from Dubai: You’ll need to rent a car to get to Jebel Jais, which is 100 miles (160km) northeast of Dubai.

Go diving or snorkeling in the waters near Fujairah

Stretching along the Gulf of Oman, Fujairah has better visibility and more diverse marine life than the waters off Dubai. Roughly 350ft (100m) offshore at Al Aqah, Snoopy Island is popular with snorkelers, thanks to schools of clownfish and regular turtle sightings. Local dive centers offer shore dives and boat trips to popular sites such as Dibba Rock, Coral Gardens and various wrecks.

How to get to Fujairah from Dubai: Al Aqah is 100 miles (165km) northeast of Dubai. Rent a car or check whether the dive centers include transport from Dubai in their packages.

Cruise the inlets of Oman's Musandam Peninsula

Dubbed "the Norway of Arabia," the Omani exclave of Musandam is famous for its fjord-like inlets and aquamarine waters. Numerous companies offer cruises aboard traditional wooden dhows, with dolphin sightings all but guaranteed. Tours typically include round-trip transport and a buffet lunch, with plenty of time for swimming and snorkeling. Boats depart from Dibba on the east coast or Khasab at the northern tip of the peninsula, with the latter offering more spectacular scenery.

This day trip from Dubai requires some advance planning. If you're planning to go to Dibba, know that you cannot enter the Omani side of Dibba (Dibba Al Baya) as an independent traveler. All people entering here need to have a free permit, which is provided by any of Dibba Al Baya's tour operators when you make a booking. The process is exceedingly easy for those on UAE tourist visas. When booking your activities, email a copy of your passport photo page and UAE entry stamp page to the tour operator; they will then organize the permit and meet you at the border with it in hand.

How to get to the Musandam Peninsula from Dubai: Dibba is less than two hours' drive from Dubai, while Khasab is three hours each way. Check Oman's visa requirements before you go.

The United Arab Emirates consists of 7 Emirates; Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, and Fujairah.

Dubai is the second largest Emirate after Abu Dhabi, and it enhances the famous landmarks of the UAE like Burj Khalifa and Dubai Fountain.

This article will be a guide to help you go to any Emirate from Dubai; it will also include transportation types and estimated time, and prices. But first, let’s cover the internal transportation in Dubai.

Al Ain takes part in Abu Dhabi, which borders Oman. Al Ain is known worldwide due to being distinguished by many factors, such as being one the oldest cities with inhabitants settled permanently, and according to UNESCO, it is a World Heritage Site. But how can residents travel from Dubai to Al Ain ?

  • Distance between the two cities: 146 KM
  • By bus: Dubai Global Village 1 to Al Madina Petrol Station 1
  • Bus approx cost: AED 8 – 50
  • Taxi approx cost: AED 250 – 300

Travel From Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Planning to travel from Dubai to Abu Dhabi could not get any easier! Apart from the common transportation like trains, buses, renting a car or taxi. Dubai RTA ( Roads and Transport Authority) is launching the Dubai Hyperloop project, which allows travellers to reach their destinations within less than 15 minutes.

But as for the current familiar methods, there’s no forward-connected metro between the two cities because the central metro is in Dubai, and it doesn’t get further than the city. But here’s what you need to know about reaching Abu Dhabi from Dhabi.

Free Shuttle Bus Service from Dubai to Abu Dhabi

Other options are available between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the free shuttle bus sets out from Dubai from Abu Dhabi Airport. But is it always for free?

The answer is no; the passenger must book a seat via Etihad Couch online service 24 hours before departure; otherwise, the passenger will be charged AED 25. Here are the routes:

  •  Al Wasl Centre to Abu Dhabi International Airport
  • Dubai Airport Terminal 3 to Al Sawari Tower, Corniche Road, Al Khalidiya, Abu Dhabi

How to Go to Sharjah From Dubai

Al Sharjah is one of the most popular cities in the UAE, and it’s the third-largest Emirate. The city borders Ajam from the north and Dubai from the south. In 1998, UNESCO named Al Sharjah “the Capital Culture of the Arab World”.

People like to travel to Sharjah for many reasons, such as tourism to visit the famous landmarks in the city, including Sharjah Safari Park , Sharjah Aquarium, and many more.

The distance of travelling from Dubai to Sharjah is 28 KM, which makes the destination between the two cities effortless. You can find a bus going to Sharjah from Dubai, among other transport. Here are the details:

Ajman City is the fifth largest city in the UAE. Hence, it’s also one of the smallest. Ajman has fewer expats compared to other cities, as most citizens are Emiratis.

Discover how to go to Ajman from Dubai by bus and other methods; the train is unavailable between the two cities. However, passengers can use the train in Dubai from Nakheel to Union, then take the bus from Union Square Bus Station to Ajman, Giant Supermarket.

Transportation from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah

Dubai taxi

Ras Al Khaimah is linked to E11 road (also known as Mohammed bin Zayed Road), and this road is connected to other Emirates. Therefore it makes it easier to travel from one Emirate to another. As for going from Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah , there are certain roads to consider.

The transportation between the two cities is affordable, shuttles are also available as a way of choice for travel, and as we mentioned earlier, it is free when booking a seat for 24 hours.

The distance between the two cities is approximately 113 KM. Many people might ask how to take a day trip to Ras Al Khaimah from Dubai and the approximate fees for this destination. As we learned so far, travelling from Dubai to other Emirates is unchallenging, and it continues to be this way. Here’s the table that explains the routes:

Umm Al Quwain has a strategic location as it takes place between Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman Emirates on the west coast.

This emirate is located in the north of UAE. And it is the second Emirate with the least population, with 44,411 inhabitants (according to 2020 statistics). The distance between Dubai City and Umm Al Quwain is nearly 56 KM and requires nearly 1 hour to reach Umm Al Quwain.

Al Fujairah is located on the eastern coast along with the Persian Gulf. And it’s also one of the smallest emirates in the UAE, which means it has less population than the other famous emirates.

The distance between Dubai and Al Fujairah is approximately 113 KM. Al Fujairah can be reached by bus or taxi. However, some people prefer to rent a car and enjoy the drive. Whatever choice you want, here are the details of the routes regarding the destination between the two cities.

That’s a wrap about travelling from Dubai to other Emirates routes. You can read more articles on Property Finder .

Sharjah has announced the Eid Al Adha holiday dates for public sector employees. The break will start from June 15 until June 18. This would mean a 5-day break for Sharjah government employees, combined with the Friday weekend.

Earlier, the Dubai government announced the Eid Al Adha holiday for government employees, starting from Saturday, June 15, until Tuesday, June 18, with official work resuming on Wednesday, June 19.

Abu Dhabi has also announced Eid Al Adha holidays for public sector employees, starting from June 15 until June 18. Official work will resume on June 19.

According to the holiday circular, exceptions apply to authorities, departments, and institutions whose employees work in shifts or are involved in public service or the management of public facilities. These organisations will set working hours for these employees based on operational needs to maintain the smooth operation of their facilities during the holiday period.

The Federal Authority of Human Resources had announced that the dates of the holidays for the public sector will be from Saturday, June 15, until Tuesday June 18.

Holidays for the private sector will be from Saturday, June 15, to Tuesday, June 18, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (Mohre) was announced after the crescent of the month of Dhul Hijjah 1445 was photographed from Abu Dhabi on Friday, June 7.

Arafah Day, the holiest day in Islam marked on Dhul Hijjah 9, falls on June 15 — while the three-day Eid Al Adha holiday (Dhul Hijjah 10 to 12) will officially be marked on June 16 to 18. Thus, the break is four days long.

Eid Al Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, is an important Islamic holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide. During Eid Al Adha, Muslims traditionally sacrifice an animal, typically a sheep, goat, cow, or camel, and distribute the meat among family, friends, and those in need. It is a time of prayer, reflection, and charitable giving, bringing communities together to celebrate faith and generosity.
