I'm not looking for a hand slapping or praise. I'm attempting to find out how to make the US version of Trek e-Bikes (Super Commuter 8+ for this instance) use these available "speed chip" kits on my Trek e-bike. I know, I know, I know all the pluses and minuses, but because the bike will be 1 year old, any manufacturers warranty would no longer be of a concern. I't not about being a speed racer, but it's about maxing out at top speed while peddling uphill and being cut off at 28 MPH, that is all. If it was adjustable, 35 would be fine. Anyway, these 'tuning devices' state "USA Versions not available", simply because the firmware has 'blocked out' the ability to have the bike put into "walk mode" (the USA versions of Trek e-bikes do not have that function programmed in), which it he first question, how to do that? Finally, anyone done this yet, here or in UK or in Europe, and the feedback is? Was it worth it, would you do it again, and has anyone in the US done it?

My 2018 +8S came with walk mode enabled. Maybe call up your local trek dealer and try to update to the latest firmware. Also ask them if they can change any settings, I read somewhere that dealers can change the headlight behavior and enable/disable walk mode with their update software on a compatible firmware.

Really? Are you in the US? I’m having second thoughts until the 2 year warranty is up. But walk mode is nice. Just turned 3100 miles and my motor is beginning to make funny noises so I’m not gonna do anything that might jeopardize anything. Actually considering the 9S if it was only able to be obtained in the US.

I live in Nevada, USA, just got my bike a few weeks ago, it definitely has walk mode. I've used it a few times to help me walk it up the stairs after a tiring ride. It might be as simple as a software update from your local trek dealer. I would at least give one a call and ask about software and settings updates.

  • Jul 17, 2018

But will a dealer do it (walk mode)?

  • Jul 18, 2018

My Trek dealer told me I could come in for software updates anytime, so if this is as simple as an update and a settings change I don't see why your trek dealer wouldn't do it. When I picked up my bike from the dealer I had walk mode.

I just got walk mode enabled and the light switch is now working. It took my local Trek dealer a day or two to figure out the software update. I was probably the first customer to request the update at this shop. This is on a Trek Verve though.

If the dongle is just manipulating speed sensor input there is no way for it to damage your system since it can not run out of spec, power/ cadence wise. However since Bikespeed rs like dongles try to output the correct speed it may be easier to detect them. That being said if you have a dealer friend I would be curious to see if they can simply adjust the wheel circumference , make it significantly smaller, so that you effectively have the same de-restriction. (Bosch prevents the user from changing this value more than %5). In terms of walk mode I think a dealer can enable/disable that button via diagnostic tool.

I was looking for the BadAss box, however, 'etuning' located in Germany stated that due to liability issues, they will not ship to the USA. I like this model because installation takes less than a couple of minutes. I also looked on ebay, and did not find anything there...

There are alternatives to BadassBox which can be shipped to US.

I have a brand-new Bikespeed-RS. I bought it last year but haven't used it. https://www.bikespeed.de/RS_en.html It's one of the good ones that doesn't mess up the speed readings. So, if anyone is interested , I am happy to sell it and provide more info/pictures. All bikes have 28mph drives. I was thinking of converting a 20mph CX drive but haven't had the opportunity do so.

I don’t want to rain on this parade, but I did want to mention that the new Bosch diagnostic software can detect tuning and it might eventually prevent the motor for being capable of working with a tuning device. I believe Bosch is legally required in the EU to implement these changes. Just figured this could be helpful to know.

It’s a tricky thing for sure. I just want people to be aware of the current status and what the future might look like.

Mike TowpathTraveler said: Chris, I can't imagine Bosch would be party to any modification of their ebike drive systems enablement to exceed state or federal speed limits; here in the US or in the EU. No way, not after they paid hefty fines stemming from the VW diesel-gate scandal, which eventually wound up even affecting Fiat Chrysler years later. Bosch ebike tuning chip

The sale or use of an electric bicycle unlocking kit is now prohibited by the Highway Code. We invite you to check the legislation in force in your country. This article is provided for information only. In no case do we encourage cyclists to equip themselves with a kit.

Specialists in unlocking since 2016, we know all the kits sold on the market. We have studied the different characteristics of the Bosch engine modules sold on the market, their reliability, durability and price. If you own an electric bike equipped with a Bosch motor, here is our recommendation to unlock it efficiently and at the best price.

SPEEDBOX 3.0 BOSCH EBIKE TUNING CHIP

trek e bike chip

  • Compatible with 2020 engines (4th generation)
  • Displays your real speed
  • Permanent assistance whatever your speed
  • Compatible with all Bosch engines
  • Compatible with INTUVIA, NYON, KIOX and PURION screens
  • Activation via the Walk Assist button
  • Not compatible with Speedbikes (limited to 45 km/h)

How it works

Activation and deactivation of the release kit is done using the Walk assist button on your electric bicycle. Press and hold the walk assist button for 2 seconds until the instrument panel displays 9.9 km/h. Your electric bicycle is now unlocked. If you wish to deactivate the module, simply press the Walk button again. Your display will then show 2.5 km/h, which means that your engine is again blocked above 25 km/h.

Description

Specially designed for Bosch electric bikes, the Speedbox 2 unlocking kit deactivates the speed limiter at the touch of a button. When Speedbox 2 is activated, the maximum speed of the assistance can reach 99km/h.

The Speedbox 2 comes in the form of an electronic box with a microprocessor and sensors. Once switched on, the brain of the deblocking kit interacts with the assistance software via sealed wired connectors. The kit therefore enables the cyclist to exceed the 25 km/h speed limit set by the regulations for EAB. The assistance is always activated to help the cyclist reach his goal quickly. The settings are always operational from the on-board computer, which only displays real data.

In addition to these technical feats, the Speedbox 2 for Bosch engines is a very compact and discreet module that can be installed in the crankcase. It can be easily mounted and dismounted by means of a magnetic fastener. In addition to these technical prowess, the Speedbox 2 for Bosch engines is also very discreet. However, access to the motor connectors requires the removal of all plastic covers from the electrical parts of the bike.

  • Switch off your electric bicycle and remove the battery.
  • Dismantle the engine block to gain access to the cables.
  • Disconnect your engine using the connectors provided.
  • Connect the e unblocking kit to the previously disconnected connectors.
  • Reassemble your engine on the bike.
  • Reconnect the battery.
  • Switch on the electric bicycle and activate the module using the Walk assist button.

Definition of tuning

Unlocking an e-bike motor means interfering with the original settings of the motor. Legislation imposes a speed limit of 25 km/h on the electric bicycle. By unlocking your motor you allow your motor (Bosch Active, Performance or CX Line) to continue to run beyond this limit.

Advantages compared to manual unclamping

Unlike manual release, the installation of a release kit is quick and easy. Bicycle performance will be much better and the kit will guarantee optimum operation for many years.

The installation of this type of electronic module does not change the structure of your bike but only the information transmitted to the Bosch engine. This means that there is no risk of damaging your electric bicycle by moving parts of the frame.

Also, the Bosch release kit offered is not visible since it fits perfectly into the motor housing.

Bosch motors

Active line.

trek e bike chip

In order to regain a certain amount of freedom at the wheel of your Bosch electric bicycle, it should be equipped with a powerful motor such as Active Line. This type of motor provides moderate assistance, which is ideal for short city trips with a lot of gradients and frequent stops. It is therefore advisable for people who are going to use the EAB for the daily home-work-home journey.

Equipped with 3 high-performance sensors, the engine is able to respond more quickly to the driver’s demands. It allows EAV users to experience a new, more comfortable ride with less pedalling resistance.

Bosch is revolutionising the VAE motor market by creating this lightweight and quiet motor. It weighs only 2.9 kg. Its rounded shapes and small size make Active Line virtually invisible in the bike frame.

By coupling this Bosch VAE engine with the Purion console and the Powerback 300 battery, you get the best combination for long rides without too much effort. It should be noted, however, that the Active Line range is compatible with other brands of on-board computers such as Nyon, Kiox or Intuvia.

Active Line Plus

trek e bike chip

Sharing many similarities with its big brother, Active Line Plus is a version that offers a higher level of derailleur assistance, whether in sport or turbo mode.

In addition to the smooth and elegant acceleration, Active Line Plus is also smoother at the start, enhancing the rider’s comfort and safety. Indeed, pedalling is smoother and more agile while the gear change is very discreet. These multiple advantages make the Active Line Plus engine an excellent choice for all city outings and occasional rides in leisure mode, once coupled to a powerful battery that increases its range.

Its main interest in purchasing is therefore its adaptability, which makes it easy to handle in any situation. This intelligent motor adapts to your pedalling rhythm to keep the same cadence on slopes as on flat ground. All in all, the Active Line Plus engine provides a more pleasant driving sensation that allows you to enjoy the scenery with confidence.

Slightly heavier (3.2 kg), the Active Line Plus engine has the same delicate and exceptional curves. However, it remains very compact and elegant on the frame of the Bosch electric bicycle. Its performance is optimal with the derailleur transmission.

Performance Line

trek e bike chip

The Bosch Performance engine is also available in two versions: the Cruise version limited to 32 km/h (with either a derailleur or a hub) and the Speed version at 45 km/h. Equipped with innovative technologies, the maximum level of assistance reached is 275%, which is sufficient for long bike excursions outside the city.

The power of the electric assistance is felt especially during starting. But its real advantage is that it is capable of maintaining this power both flat and uphill. The Performance Line Speed engine therefore offers a sportier ride and is more suitable for cyclists in a hurry or who have to cover long distances on a daily basis.

If you’re tired of pedalling, but need to get to a point B more than 30 km away in less than an hour, simply set the assistance level to Turbo from the console to get a maximum power of 575 W. This Performance Line engine, reserved for VAE unleashing, makes for smart driving. The 3 sensors built into the engine measure torque, speed and acceleration to match the rider’s pedalling frequency as closely as possible.

Performance Line CX

trek e bike chip

The latest generation of Performance Line CX engines is the perfect ally for demanding users. Equipped with a maximum power of 600 W, it fears no obstacles. Regardless of the type of terrain, it is possible to maintain the same cadence thanks to a level of assistance that can reach up to 300% bar in Turbo mode.

This Bosch engine combines all the qualities required to satisfy amateur or sports cyclists. It’s an ultra-powerful engine that develops its full potential instantly from the very first pedal stroke. It incorporates a new assistance mode (eMTB) that automatically adapts the ride to any type of terrain and is perfectly suited to steep and uneven terrain.

The Performance CX engine is also capable of endurance, because even under heavy load, it won’t overheat. All of these benefits, coupled with the gear shift detection options or automatic shift assist, result in a high-performance EAV with a smooth and dynamic ride.

The Performance CX engine is definitely the option to take for those who like to practice sports in VAE. It allows you to concentrate 100% on the course.

Bosch ebike displays

trek e bike chip

Purion is an on-board computer with a very pure design that focuses only on the essentials. In other words, it displays only the most basic functions such as manual driving mode adjustment or real-time speed display.

This is the model that at least occasional or regular users should have to manage and view the data and performance of their Bosch engine and power-assisted bicycle. Although it is minimalist, Purion is very accurate and efficient. All the information from the sensors is at your fingertips with a simple gesture of the thumb.

trek e bike chip

If you want a console that you don’t have to touch every minute to check your settings or navigation data, opt for the intuitive Intuvia dashboard. All data is displayed on a backlit screen that you can see at a glance.

Intelligent and clever, Intuvia can advise on changing gear or assistance mode when necessary to protect the engine and battery. A real plus for users who want to concentrate on driving while keeping their hands on the handlebars for security.

trek e bike chip

Combining design and performance, Kiox is a complete on-board computer that allows ultra-precise measurements and adjustments. In developing this console, Bosch has thought of the very demanding sportsmen and EVA owners who require a scratch-resistant screen, a watertight, solid and robust case, capable of withstanding shocks and falls with a magnetic support for off-road use.

Kiox provides several pieces of information, including battery charge level, speed, heart rate, distance travelled, etc… Its Bluetooth interface replaces the USB port to allow remote updates of this software sound.

trek e bike chip

By installing a Nyon console on your VAE, you benefit from an all-in-one brain, ideal for adapting to the whims of your travels or journeys. This connected dashboard will revolutionise your driving as it will be able to interact with an internet portal (eBike Connect) and a dedicated Smartphone mobile application.

Nyon offers the possibility to pedal in ride mode, navigation mode or fitness mode. In concrete terms, you can plan your journeys in advance, share your data online, evaluate your performance in real time, find your way around thanks to GPS, find shortcuts or count the calories burned.

Bosch ebike batteries

Powerpack 300.

trek e bike chip

The Powerpack 300 battery has a long enough lifespan for regular short urban trips on a daily basis. It is perfect for workers who have to cycle several times a week. Note that the entire Powerpack range benefits from the best protection devices against overload, overheating and short circuits.

Powerpack 400

trek e bike chip

Mounted on the frame or luggage rack, this battery is powerful enough for a short ride or to go shopping by bike. Like all models in the Bosch Powerpack battery range, this version has a high energy density and recharges quickly.

Powerpack 500

trek e bike chip

This battery, which is the same size as its predecessors, offers a longer range, allowing you to drive 90 km in cruise mode on a 100% full charge. It delivers 500 Wh of energy to propel a VAE engine over a medium distance, for frequent and regular use.

Powertube 500

trek e bike chip

The Powerback 500 lithium-ion battery is equipped with new technologies that increase its lifespan while providing the necessary and adequate energy for your city trips, outings and leisure activities. Versatile, there is no risk of memory effect or spontaneous discharge during use.

DualBattery

trek e bike chip

It provides a power of 1000Wh thanks to the combination of two batteries and allows the transport of heavy loads. It is suitable for experienced hikers and cyclists who like to travel long distances. Note that Bosch batteries are compatible with dozens of other brands of EVA.

Some brands equipped with Boshc motors

Cube, Dancelli, DBS, Definitive, Diamant, Diamond, Dutch-id, Ebike, Electra, Flyer, Focus, Fuji, Gazelle, Gepida, Ghost, Gitane, Granville, Gudereit, Haibike,Hercules, i:Sy, ibex, Kalkhoff, Kettler, Koga, Kreidler, KTM, Lapierre, Lombardo, Matra, Mondraker, Moustache, Orbea, Pegasus, Peugeot, Puch, Raleigh, Riese & Muller, Rixe, Rose, Scott, Simplon, Sinus, Solex, Sparta, Stevens, Tern, Thomson, Trek, Univega, Velo de ville, Victoria, Viper, Wanderer, Whistle, Winora

Is my bike still under warranty?

If you modify your electric bicycle by installing a Bosch unlocking kit, your bicycle warranty is automatically voided. In principle, if you remove the kit, there is no longer any trace of the unlocking, however, we cannot guarantee that a professional cannot detect the previous presence of a kit.

Will the kit damage my Bosch engine?

The kit does not damage your engine, it simply allows you to release the rated engine power beyond the 25 km/h allowed. The installation of an electronic module will not increase the engine’s power.

What is the impact on the autonomy of my electric bicycle?

The battery capacity remains unchanged. If you use your engine more often (as your engine will now continue to run beyond 25 km/h), then your Bosch battery will discharge more quickly.

How can I be sure that this Bosch kit is compatible with my electric bicycle?

Are you unsure which kit you need? Contact us via the form opposite, we will be happy to answer you within 3 days maximum.

9 tuning tips to get the most out of your Bosch electric mountain bike | Bosch Smart System Review

Flow reviews the latest bosch smart system.

Last year German brand Bosch unveiled its snazzy new Smart System. Designed for high-performance electric mountain bikes, the Smart System incorporated the new eBike Flow app, which offers users the ability to perform over-the-air firmware updates, while introducing new navigation functions and the option to custom-tune the motor’s power output. As for hardware, Bosch also rolled out a new LED controller, the Kiox 300 display, and a huge 750Wh PowerTube battery. While the Performance Line CX motor carried over, it too was updated to be compatible with the current Smart System and future improvements.

Over the past six months we’ve been spending a load of time aboard the latest Bosch Smart System. You may have seen our Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 review and our Scott Patron review , where we discussed some of the performance attributes of the latest Bosch drive unit. Here we’ll be taking a deeper dive into some of the features behind the latest Smart System and what it does well. We’ll also be discussing how it compares to the competition, what we think could be improved, and how you can get the most out of your Bosch e-MTB.

Watch our video review on the Bosch Smart System here:

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC SL

To explore the tuning options of the new Bosch Smart System, we’ve been spending some time on a Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 HPC SL test bike. This model is one step down from the blue and orange Actionteam model we recently reviewed, and so it comes in considerably cheaper at $9,499 AUD.

It still features the same frame, suspension design and geometry. It’s also built around the same Bosch Performance Line CX motor, which dishes out 85Nm of peak torque and up to 340% assistance to the rider. There’s a removable 750Wh battery inside the downtube, and up at the cockpit you’ll find the latest Kiox 300 display and LED controller.

With a 170mm travel RockShox Zeb and 160mm of rear travel, it’s an absolute beast of a bike. Cube specs it out with sticky Maxxis tyres and tough DoubleDown casings, along with powerful Shimano Deore brakes and big 203mm rotors. All solid stuff for a hard-hitting e-MTB.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Setting up the LED controller

It has to be said that the LED controller is a huge step up from the old Purion display we’re used to seeing on Bosch e-MTBs.

The new controller uses a more shapely 3D profile, with nice tactile buttons that are positioned within easy reach of your thumb. It’s also considerably smaller than the Purion display, which often caused issues when it came to setting up the brake lever and dropper post remote. In comparison, we’ve found the LED controller to play nicely with every dropper post lever we’ve used so far.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

It’s still important to get it into the right position though. As well as adjusting the rotation on the bar, the LED controller has a secondary mount that allows you to adjust its lateral position. We generally push it as close to the left-hand grip as possible.

It’s worth noting that Bosch makes two different handlebar mounts. One of those is specific for modern Shimano I-Spec EV brake levers, and it allows the controller to sit slightly higher so it clears the brake lever clamp. The other is slightly lower and is designed to suit SRAM and Magura brake levers, among others. Both mounts are available to purchase aftermarket, which is useful if you decide to switch the brakes on your e-MTB.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

You can remove the Kiox display

A new feature of the Bosch Smart System is its ability to be set up with or without a display. This differs to the previous system (like that used on the 2021 Trek Rail , for example), which housed much of the brains inside the Kiox head unit. That meant if you knocked the display off in a crash, the whole bike would shut down.

The new Kiox 300 head unit however, is much simpler. It’s purely a display, and isn’t crucial to the function of the whole system.

With this in mind, it’s possible to remove the Kiox 300 entirely, and instead rely on the LED controller only. As well as tidying up the cockpit, this helps to remove distractions from your peripheral vision, which will be of benefit to some riders.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Of course you’ll lose the ability to see metrics such as your riding speed, cadence and power output, but you still get the basics from the LED controller. Different colours are used to indicate which assist mode you’re in, and the five LEDs will display your battery status in 10% increments. As you drop down 10%, the top LED changes from red to white. Drop another 10%, and that same LED turns off. It’s simple, but effective.

Helping to mitigate distractions further, the LED controller features a built-in ambient light sensor that allows it to automatically adjust its brightness. If you’re out on a night ride, the system will dim the LEDs so that they’re less noticeable. On a sunny day, the LEDs will punch up to their maximum brightness so you can still see them.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Keep updated with the eBike Flow app

As mentioned earlier, a big story with the Bosch Smart System is the development of the new eBike Flow app.

Offering a vast improvement in functionality compared to the German brand’s previous efforts, the eBike Flow app introduces some interesting tuning options, as well as some nifty navigation tools.

More importantly, the eBike Flow app is also now your platform for over-the-air firmware updates.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160 ebike flow app

In the past, updates could only be performed by taking your e-MTB into the local bike shop to have it plugged into the specific Bosch dealer program. Previous updates included the addition of the Tour+ assist mode, and when Bosch increased the maximum torque output of the Performance Line CX motor from 75Nm to the now-standard 85Nm.

With the new Smart System interface however, there are options for Bosch to continually roll out improvements. In fact, during the filming of this review, a new update became available that allows the Kiox 300 display to provide you with turn-by-turn navigation, which hadn’t been an option before. Bosch has also introduced a new Auto riding mode, which automatically adjusts the support level in response to a drop in riding speed caused by a headwind or sharp incline.

With that in mind, it’s worth regularly pairing your bike to the eBike Flow app to check it for updates and newly developed features.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

One such feature is the eBike Lock function. The idea here is to disable the motor in the event of your bike being stolen, providing an extra level of security.

You can set up this function in the eBike Flow app, and it essentially turns your phone into a digital key. This means whenever you turn your e-MTB on, the system will look for a Bluetooth signal from your smartphone before the motor will provide its normal support.

It’s a feature that will likely be more useful for commuters, but at least it’ll make it harder for your mates to steal your bike and take it for a joyride when you’re in the pub!

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Tuning the Bosch Performance Line CX motor

Where things get more interesting with the Bosch Smart System and eBike Flow app is the ability to custom tune the motor’s performance.

There are four attributes that you can tune; maximum power, maximum support level, acceleration and maximum speed. You can’t adjust the settings for the Tour+ or eMTB modes, because these are dynamic assistance modes that vary the motor’s output depending on a variety of inputs from the rider.

You can tune the Eco and Turbo modes however, which is useful if you’re chasing a different support characteristic to suit your riding style.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

For example, the acceleration level makes a significant difference to how quickly the power comes on, say if you’re starting from a standstill on a climb. Heavier and more experienced riders may be after a higher support level and punchier acceleration compared to the default settings. In contrast, lighter folks and those newer to e-MTBs may find the stock settings to be too abrupt. In this case, de-tuning the acceleration and maximum support level is a great way to soften the motor’s output.

Perhaps you want to push harder and get more of a workout when riding with another rider? You could detune the motor, or you could even limit the maximum speed at which the motor cuts off, forcing you to do a lot more work. This is also a useful function for parents too, who might not want their kids zooming around the trails at a top speed of 25km/h.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

In our case, we like to tune the motor to the extremes. We have the Eco setting with the support level and acceleration at their lowest points (-5). This of course makes you work harder, but if you’re going on a humongous epic up in the mountains, you’re going to need to squeeze the absolute maximum range out of the battery. With a powerful e-MTB motor like the Performance Line CX drive unit, it’s easy to lean on the motor to do most of the work. Keeping those assistance levels on the lower side is a good way to force you to ride a bit slower, and make sure you’re finishing your adventure with reserves in the tank.

On the other side, we’ve got the Turbo mode set to the maximum assist settings for acceleration and support (+5). We don’t use Turbo that much on singletrack, preferring to use the adaptive eMTB mode for riding on technical terrain. When we do use Turbo however, which is usually around town on the way to the trailhead, we want plenty of support for zooming away from cars at a traffic light. Also, it’s just brilliant fun!

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Extended Boost (or not)

One of the most impressive features of the latest Bosch Smart System is the Extended Boost. This refers to how much the motor continues to supply power when you have stopped pedalling, which is also known as ‘overrun’.

The Extended Boost function is only found on the latest Smart System-equipped Performance Line CX motors, and it’s only applicable in the adaptive eMTB assist mode. You still get some overrun when riding in the Eco, Tour+ and Turbo settings, but it is not nearly as pronounced.

When using the eMTB mode, the Extended Boost provides consistent motor support for an additional metre of riding when you stop pedalling. As you can imagine, this is hugely beneficial when you’re riding up a steep and technical climb with lots of big ledges to get up and over.

The downside of Extended Boost is that it can feel like the bike is pulling away from you if you’re not ready for it. For example, if you stop pedalling just as you come into a slow-speed corner, the motor will keep driving, potentially pushing you wide and off the trail. We’ve found it fairly easy to adapt to, but lighter and less experienced riders may find it overwhelming.

Those riders have two options. You can simply ride in the Tour+ mode, which still provides adaptive assistance but with less power than the e-MTB mode. The other option is to take your bike into a Bosch dealer to disable the Extended Boost function. To do so, the motor’s maximum torque output will also be reduced to 75Nm. However, that’s likely to be a fine tradeoff for riders who are looking for softer and less aggressive assistance in the first place.

Walk Assist & Hill Hold

Bosch motors have always had a walk mode, but previous controllers required you to press and hold two buttons to engage it. That made it really awkward to use when you were trying to push a heavy e-MTB up a slippery hillside.

With the new Smart System and LED controller, you only need to press the one button. After doing so, you simply push the bike forward, or let it roll backwards slightly, and Walk Assist is automatically engaged. The motor will assist you up to a maximum speed of 4km/h.

Also neat is the new Hill Hold feature, which Bosch recently rolled out as an over-the-air update via the eFlow Bike app. Hill Hold is designed to bridge the gap between you using Walk Assist, and then remounting the bike to ride again. So once the climb has mellowed out slightly and you take your thumb off the Walk Assist button, the motor will actually hold the bike in position to stop it from rolling backwards.

It’s also useful if you’re in a bit of a pickle on a really steep and awkward climb, and you need to use the bike to physically pull yourself up, or even off the trail. It’s not the sort of feature you’ll use all the time, but with many e-MTBs weighing around 25kg, you’ll be glad you’ve got it when you need it.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

One particular aspect of the latest Bosch Smart System drive unit that’s impressed us is its ability to provide support across a wide range of cadence inputs. Whether you’re in a low or a high gear, on the flat or up a climb, the motor offers a remarkable amount of grunt whenever you need it to.

The downside of this brute force is that it can be easy to lean on the motor and continue riding in too high of a gear. This is a common theme amongst riders who are new to the world of e-MTBs, particularly if they don’t have a lot of experience with shifting gears under power. The temptation is not to shift gears at all, and as long as your RPM is in between 55-120 RPM, the motor will likely pull you through.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Of course this has consequences on drivetrain durability, and it puts unnecessary strain on the motor’s internals. You’ll also reduce overall efficiency, causing the motor to drain the battery quicker.

Ideally, you want to be pedalling with a cadence of around 80-90 RPM. This will provide you with optimal support from the motor, while maintaining good efficiency and reducing unnecessary wear on the drivetrain.

For that reason, it’s useful to set up the Kiox 300 head unit to display your live cadence. Handily, there’s even a nifty colour-coded meter that will show you when you’re in the optimal range. Keep an eye on this graphic over the course of a couple of rides, and you’ll get a good feel for how fast you should be spinning the pedals.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160 powertube 750wh battery

Battery health

While we’re talking about looking after your e-MTB, it’s worth considering one of the most expensive components; the battery.

Lithium-Ion batteries offer the ability to recharge many hundreds, and often thousands of cycles. In the case of the Bosch PowerTube batteries, you should be able to get 1,500 complete discharge cycles before they start gradually losing capacity.

As with all Lithium-Ion batteries, your e-MTB battery is at its most stressed state when it’s either fully discharged or fully charged. According to Bosch, it’s best to store the battery on your e-MTB with between 30-60% charge. So rather than leaving your bike in the shed for a week after running the battery flat, give it a top-up before you put it away. Likewise, don’t leave it fully charged while it’s left dormant for three months over winter.

On that note, the battery will lose some of its performance when being stored or used in extreme temperatures. Ideally, the battery is best stored at room temperatures between 10-20°C. If you’ve had an injury and you know you’re not going to be riding your bike for a while, it might make sense to remove the battery and store it inside the house, especially during a hot Australian summer.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Wireless speed sensor upgrade

If you’ve already removed the Kiox 300 display, and you want to tidy up your e-MTB further, it’s possible to upgrade to a wireless speed sensor.

All current Smart System drive units, including the Performance Line CX on our Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 test bike, feature a speed sensor built into the motor. This hidden sensor is designed to sync up with a magnet that you fit to the valve stem of your rear wheel, so that it can measure each wheel revolution.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

You will need to purchase the valve stem magnet from a Bosch dealer, and you’ll also need them configure the system to use the internal speed sensor. It’s worth noting that if you have a bike with really long chainstays (mostly long wheelbase cargo bikes), the distance between the sensor and the valve may be too great for it to read accurately.

It’s certainly an option on the Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 though, which has nice short chainstays. And by upgrading to the wireless speed sensor, you can remove the external wire and the magnet from the rotor, giving you a cleaner overall setup. Nice!

What do we dig about the latest Bosch Smart System?

With all of the new hardware and firmware features built into the new Bosch Smart System, the overall user experience has elevated considerably. The motor tuning options are functional, the LED controller is tactile and easy to use, and the Kiox 300 head unit offers a crisp and vibrant display with a gamut of useful information at your fingertips.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

On the trail, we continue to be impressed by the power and support from the Performance Line CX motor. The eMTB mode is brilliant, varying the support between 140-340% based on a variety of parameters. It’s highly responsive, and the Extended Boost function is such a boon on steep and technical climbing sections.

Despite the raw power that’s on tap, Bosch have done an amazing job to make the support feel intuitive and easy to control. Indeed the adaptive eMTB mode makes this one of, if not the best full-powered motors we’ve tested.

Overall volume is a little louder than Shimano EP8 on the climbs, but we’ve found the pitch of the Performance Line CX motor to be more consistent with less of a high-pitched whine. It also offers significantly greater support. In our standardised range testing, we’ve found it easy to climb at an average speed of around 21-22km/h on a Bosch-equipped bike, compared to 18-19km/h on a Shimano-equipped bike.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Despite the added grunt, efficiency has also been favourable, with those same Bosch-powered bikes racking up a competitive amount of mileage. In fact, we’re not sure we’d ever need anything bigger than the PowerTube 750Wh battery. If you’re curious to see how they fared alongside the competition in terms of outright range, check out our Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 review and the Scott Patron review .

What don’t we like?

Since Bosch released the Performance Line CX Gen 4 motor back in 2019, it has been plagued by a loud clacking noise that occurs on the descents and when coasting across rough ground. This is due to the chain pulling back on the internal freewheel mechanism, causing a metal-on-metal  thunk that sounded like something was coming loose. It was annoying to start off with, but most owners of a Bosch e-MTB will tell you that you do get used to it, eventually tuning out the noise entirely.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Curiously, the noise has been far less prevalent in the latest Bosch-equipped bikes we’ve tested. While it was still detectable on the Cube and Scott, both the volume and harshness of the sound has softened significantly. In fact, we largely forgot about it. Well, until we were riding alongside the stealthy-quiet TQ motor on the Trek Fuel EXe .

One downside of the Bosch Performance Line CX drive unit is its relatively bulky size, which makes it harder for brands to build bikes with short chainstays. Most of the Bosch-equipped bikes we’ve tested have rear centre lengths well over 450mm. The latest Trek Rail is about as short as we’ve seen, coming in at 447mm. The Cube Stereo Hybrid 160 gets around this by using 27.5in wheels, which allows for a shorter 441mm rear end.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

We’ve been well served by the PowerTube 750Wh battery, though some riders may lament the lack of an even bigger option to compete with the 900Wh monsters in the Canyon Spectral:ON and Norco Sight VLT . Our range testing has shown the Bosch system actually comes pretty close in total range, and of course those bigger batteries come with more weight that compromises handling.

One thing we don’t like about the battery is that a key is required to remove it. The bike comes with a special Abus key and a spare, which you’ll need to unlock the battery for removal. This is a useful security feature for commuter e-Bikes that are being locked up in the city, but it’s unnecessary for an e-MTB, with the key being one more thing that you have to remember. While this is the case for most Bosch-equipped bikes, the Scott Patron is one of the few options out there that doesn’t require a key to remove the battery. We hope more brands follow suit.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Lastly, while the updated display and LED controller provide a highly functional user interface, their physical presence is quite prominent. Of course the Kiox 300 display can be removed entirely, but the LED controller still sticks up quite a bit from the handlebar. That means flipping your bike upside-down on the side of the trail to repair a puncture is a no-go. It’s potentially more vulnerable in a crash too.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

What lies ahead?

Acknowledging those limitations, Bosch has recently added some new hardware options to its Smart System range.

This includes the System Controller, which is designed to integrate neatly into the frame’s top tube. This is then paired with a Mini Remote that sits next to the left-hand grip. The result is a more discreet user interface, not unlike what we’ve seen on the Specialized Levo , the Giant Trance X E+ and Pivot Shuttle SL .

trek e bike chip

Because frames will need a specific slot in the top tube to fit the System Controller, expect to see more manufacturers integrating this setup into their frame designs in 2023.

Also brand new is the Performance Line CX Race motor, which Bosch says has been designed for competitive e-Enduro racing. Coming in 200g lighter thanks to a magnesium casing, the Race motor offers the same 85Nm peak torque as the regular Performance Line CX drive unit, and indeed it shares a lot of structural similarities, including the external mounting points.

The difference with the Race motor is the firmware driving it. Sitting above Turbo, the special Race mode delivers faster acceleration and up to 400% assistance (compared to 340% on the standard motor). It also features double the overrun, with the Extended Boost function providing two metres of support after you stop pedalling. From the early ride reports, it sounds like a pretty wild motor!

bosch performance line cx race motor

At this point in time, Bosch says the Performance Line CX Race motor will be available in limited quantities on high-spec e-MTBs designed for e-Enduro racing. We expect bike brands will soon begin releasing new models that are built around the Race motor, and we look forward to giving it a whirl.

We’re also eager to try out Bosch’s new ABS technology, which has been co-developed with Magura. The concept of an anti-skid system on a heavy-duty e-MTB certainly has merit, and both brands are clearly very excited about what they’ve cooked up together.

Lastly, while we’re seeing a flurry of activity in the lightweight e-MTB space, Bosch remains conspicuously absent from this market. The German brand has clearly been focused on keeping up with demand for its full-powered motors, but we have no doubt that it’ll be working on something smaller and lighter that can be used to build a sub-20kg e-MTB. As to what a lightweight Bosch motor might offer? Well we can only speculate at this point, but we look forward to seeing Bosch join the mid-powered arms race in the future.

bosch performance line cx gen 4 smart system cube stereo hybrid 160

Flow’s Verdict

We’d already been impressed with the overall power and on-trail feel of the Bosch Performance Line CX motor, but controller ergonomics and user personalisation always seemed to be lacking compared to the competition.

With the latest Smart System, Bosch has brought things up to speed, having made significant improvements to the user interface while also offering a larger 750Wh battery option. Along with the excellent eMTB adaptive mode and its Extended Boost function, this is right up there as one of the best performing motors we’ve tested.

Of course there’s always room for improvement, though it’s clear that we’ll be seeing more features and hardware options coming to the Smart System platform in the near future. And that is very good news for e-MTB riders.

A smart tuning of the third generation with an option to set a speed limit of an e-bike

SpeedBox 3.0 tuning kit enables to select speed limit of your own choice. After the SpeedBox is installed, your e-bike’s display will show real data, such as maximum and average speeds, daily mileage and cruising range.

How does SpeedBox 3.0 work?

The tuning kit can be activated directly on your bike’s display. You will activate SpeedBox 3.0 by activating the WALK assist function shortly, a value of 9.9 km/h (6.2 mph) is displayed and from now on you will be able to ride at a speed of 40 km/h, 50 km/h and even more than 60 km/h.

To deactivate the tuning, activate the WALK assist function shortly again. The value of 2.5 km/h (1.6 mph) will appear on your display and the speed limit will reset to 25 km/h. Your e-bike will then work the same as before installation of the tuning.

SpeedBox was also designed for e-bikes that do not have a classic control unit with WALK assist function. In this case you can just use the combination of - + - +  buttons and SpeedBox will be activated. You can easily deactivate SpeedBox in the same way.

You can set the maximum speed of an electric assistance by changing modes: Turbo - EMTB - Tour - Eco - Tour - EMTB - Turbo . An actual speed limit will be displayed after that. The maximum speed of an electric assistance can be switched by activating WALK assist function shortly or by turning the rear wheel 360°. The value of 1,5 km/h on the display corresponds with the limit of 15 km/h, 2 km/h corresponds with the limit of 20 km/h, 2,5 corresponds with 25 km/h, 3,0 corresponds with 30 km/h, 9,9 corresponds with 99 km/h etc. The last displayed limit will be saved after 5 seconds of inactivity.

When using SpeedBox 3.0 with Bosch motors of the 4 th generation (produced in 2020 or later) it is necessary to leave the bike on after finishing the ride until a value of 0.0 km/h is displayed. During this process the remaining time will be displayed in minutes. Then it is safe to turn off your bike and you can start looking forward to your next trip.

When connecting the SpeedBox to an e-bike you will find connectors colored to make installation very simple. We have prepared detailed instructions and videos to make installation easy for you. Disassembly of our tuning chip is just as easy. If you have any troubles with installation or disassembly, do not hesitate to contact us.

If you are planning to install SpeedBox on a brand-new bike, make sure you ride it for at least 10 km before the tuning is activated.

Detailed installation information can be found here.

Bosch eBike Speed Unlocking & Tuning With Eplus Chips

If you own a Bosch ebike from 2016-2022 you might be interested in unlocking its full potential with an Eplus chip. These chips modify the speed limit of the engine, allowing you to maintain 35, 50 or 75 Km/h. Both chips are compatible with the latest firmware.

There are two types of Eplus chips: the Standard chip and the Advanced chip. The Standard chip is a great option if you want a simple plug-and-play solution for unlocking the speed limit. It takes only a few minutes to install, and it's compatible with Active Line, Active Line Plus, Performance Line, and Performance Line CX models. The Bosch speed unlock chip also features anti-detection features, completing a special compensation procedure at the end of each ride that allows the chip to remain undetectable to the Bosch tamper detection software. By allowing this countdown to complete at the end of each ride, the 504 error can be avoided. The compensation begins after the bike is idle for approximately 5-8 minutes, so once you have a chip installed, the best thing to do is to simply never turn off the bike at the end of your ride and let the bike turn itself off after sitting idle for 10-15 minutes. It is also prudent to not plug your bike into the charger until after it has automatically shut off.

trek e bike chip

Installation of the Advanced chip is just as easy as the Standard chip, and it's also features the same anti detection countdown. The chip unlocks the engine and can be activated or deactivated using the walk button or the app. The speedometer always shows the real speed, and all data on your display will be shown correctly, even if the tuning is activated. The chip also offers automatic calibration of wheel circumference.

In conclusion, both the Standard and Advanced Eplus chips offer great benefits to Bosch eBike owners. The Standard chip is a simple plug-and-play solution for unlocking the speed limit, while the Advanced chip offers more customization options through the Eplus Tuning app. With either chip, you can unlock the full potential of your Bosch eBike and enjoy increased speed and freedom.

Greetings. I have a 2022 Trek Rail 9.8 (bosch Performance line CX) with the integrated top tube controller and mini controller. It is not the controller in the video or those listed. Also, I am in the US. Can I use either of these chips to de-restrict speed? If so, can I order from you to ship to Hawaii? Thanks!

We ship worldwide so no issues there.

For bikes with the Mini remote and Top tube controller you will need the Smart system version of the Chip available here: https://epicebikes.com.au/product/eplus-bosch-smart-system-chip-standard-speed-sensor/

Please note that this only works if your bike has the speed sensor magnet on the rear disk rotor or one of the rear wheel spokes. If does not work for bikes using the Magnet on the rim where the Tyre Valve is located.

I have a 2019 Trek PowerFly 5. I would like to increase the current 20 mph speed limit to 28 mph (actually anything above 25 mph actual is fine..) with normal (vs super-human) assistance. Will this CHIP work?? I have spoken to my Trek dealer, they say “altering the speed” voids the warranty, etc, etc. Is this true? It sounds like I would be on my own regarding the Bosch motor maintenance and tuning if this chip is installed.. Please advise. Thank you. p.s. My motor definitely begins to resist you or decrease assistance at the 19.5 mph point. Now, it will coast above the 20 mph on a downhill. For example I have hit the 40 mph mark…downhill. If I am in ETMB mode and are pedaling on essentially flat terrain in high gear, as I approach 19.5+mph, it will limit my speed, by downshifting and increasing my pedal rpm’s I can get to the 19.5 without resistance. So there is an apparent programmed correlation related to power, speed and pedal rpm. I realize the Class 1 limitations, but we are talking going above 20 mph with assistance, it is not with a throttle as the Class 3 ebikes. The Class 3, which I have ridden, lose their climbing capability due to the higher gearing. So there is need for the higher speed for the eMTN bike.

Yes this will work on a 2019 Trek Powerfly 5. A New Speed limit can be set to 50 or 75km/h depending on which chip you select so you no longer hit that wall when you reach the max pedal assisted speed. If you remove the chip prior to any warranty claims you have a chance of getting warranty, Submitting it for repair work with the chip installed is going to result in no warranty.

Hi. I have a 2017 trek powerfly 9 with the Bosch Performance Line CX motor. Which do I choose and is it easy to install. Looking for max speed. Many thanks

I’m curious if the walk function is no longer available once you plug-in this chip are you still able to use the walk function normally when you need it or is it completely disengaged?

The walk function is unaffected and still works as normal with the chip installed.

You fucker! I love your new solution. Better than the Levociraptor option IMO but I am on my 2nd motor on my gen 3 Levo already. I just don\'t want to fuck with having to reinstall it when the shit Brose motor breaks down again. I do have a 6 bolt design, I know the real reason you asked for pics is you were hoping my feet made it into them. Don\'t worry, I will still send it to you later :P I do want to help Daddy buy the Porsche. Just might have to wait until my motor is not shitting the bed every few hundred miles.

Chris Lacy, UK

Thanks Alex , top service again ! I had one of your plant 3\'s for my Levo comp about 3 years ago and it\'s been faultless . This one is for a buddy of mine I\'m sure he will love it as much as I do ?Thanks again for your help

Just a quick note to say thank you. Awesome service, super quick delivery.Easy fitting and then…The test run. Big grins all round, Father and Son covered in mud, toasted a whole battery after school, works a treat, bloody marvellous. transmogrification.

Ben Russell, AU

Just saying thanks for your product. I pretty much got it because I enjoyed your honest attitude and fantastic craftsmanship. Its not often I come across someone who actually gives a fuck about what they are making, I am stoked to be able to support you. And it works unreal, I put it on a vado SL and pretty much just sit in eco mode as it works so well.

Mitchell Sirgany, USA

Dear Alex, you are and amazing human being, that God has given you wonderful insights, like(planet3 invention) and many more wonderful things to help out humanity, etc. I will always look to you as a friend & fellow human being! So Gods Blessing to You my friend, always, thanks as always Mitchell.

Lew Whedon, USA

Hey Alex, got your package, it took me 5mins to install, couldn\'t have been any easier, got it on first try, all you have to do is follow instructions, anyone that had the right part and had problems installing shouldn\'t be riding a bike, they should stick to a wagon, took for a test ride and it never stopped pulling, hit 39mph but ran out of legs and gears, this is what everyone wants without messing with electronics, people like you make biking so much better and FUNTHANKS FOR THE SMILE YOU PUT ON MY FACE.

Francisco Pancho Rodriguez, USA

Definitely your design is the best. Installed with no issues. Decided to use 1 magnet and works awesome. Thanks for your help.

How to Derestrict an Electric Bike – The Definitive Guide

by Peter | May 3, 2019 | How to Guide , Tuning & Maintenance | 0 comments

How to Derestrict an Ebike

Today, most electric bikes have an assisted speed limit of 25 km/h, but this is insufficient for those who want to drive faster for sports and other professional or leisure activities. If you want electric assistance at higher speeds, the best way is derestriction, whereby the pedal assistance limit is removed allowing the bike to reach speeds of up to 32 km/h or more.

Biking to work derestricted Ebike

Also known as tuning, this process allows the machine’s motor to release all its electrical power naturally without inhibiting it.

Note that in Canada the speed limit with assistance is 32 km/h; however, modifications made to the assistance system are still sometimes prohibited. So, know that if you make modifications, you may only be allowed to use your bike in specifically dedicated zones, such as a mountain bike course or fenced-in yard.

Elsewhere, like regions of the United States, if speed assistance functions above 25 mph the bike may be categorized as a low-power motorbike, requiring registration, a drivers license and plates. Be sure you’re aware of your local legislation before taking a derestricted e-bike on the road. Once you’ve done your research, it’s time to move on to tuning.

What specific tools are used for tuning and how does it work?

In most cases, only two components of this machine are required to complete the procedure: the controller and sensor. But you may need a few additional tools such as:

  • Wire stripper/cutter tool
  • Allen wrench/key set tool

They work as follows:

The controller receives the data provided by the sensor when the electric bike is in operation and compares it with details already stored in the computerized system: the manufacturer’s speed limit of 25km/h and wheel circumference. With this information, it calculates the speed of the bike and cuts assistance when the 25km/h mark is reached.

Rear wheel Ebike

The sensor is a mechanical unit placed symmetrically on the frame facing one of the rear-wheel spokes , which contains a magnet. This console measures the magnet’s circulation frequency, which is then transmitted automatically to the controller for speed regulation.

Generally, tuning involves adjusting the e-bike’s electric assist system to allow the motor engine to operate at its normal capacity, without restriction. It feeds intentionally distorted data into the machine’s electronic controller, so that the system can be triggered to deliver assistive power beyond the 25km/h threshold.

During operation, the controller on a de-restricted bike will record a speed lower than the one the bike is actually traveling at, one that doesn’t surpass 25km/h. Therefore, while the bike’s display shows a normal reading, it is gauging only about half of the machine’s actual speed. In other cases, the flange can be completely removed, so that the speed of your e-bike is no longer limited by the manufacturer’s in-built restrictions, but only the maximum power that your engine can deliver. These are the two primary processes for de-restriction.

Things to check before proceeding:

Before undertaking derestriction, it should be noted that the tuning process will vary technically from one machine to another depending on the e-bike brand. Therefore, the tuning technique used on one particular assist system may not necessarily work on another.

It’s therefore important to research your engine in order to pick the correct tuning procedure. Typically, machines that run on hub system motors are more difficult— and sometimes impossible—to derestrict, while those that operate on pedal motors are fairly easy to tune. Nevertheless, there are always tuning alternatives on the market that you can use to derestrict your bike’s speed limits no matter the model.

Derestrict your Ebike with or without tools in this bike repair shop

In most cases, this procedure can be done by anyone, including those who don’t have any background in electronics. You only need to follow the tuning instructions provided and everything should go according to plan. Still, before tuning your bike, you should check a few things:

• Whether your e-bike has the capacity to be tuned

• The legality of the procedure and potential disadvantages of modification, such as restriction from using the normal bike-paths in some jurisdictions

• Penalties for speed over the legal limit in your area

• You may void the bikes Warranty, which will exclude you from their future customer support

Tuning techniques:

Manual derestriction without using a kit.

With this procedure, you won’t require any special tools or equipment to adjust the e-bike’s assisted speed limit. You’ll only need to modify the sensor’s speed reading manually, so to change the way the transmitter relays data to the controller. This is how it’s done:

Switching sensor elements.

On most electric bikes, these elements include the sensor itself, found on the frame-base, and an adjoining magnet on one of the rear wheel’s spokes. First, you need to manually count the number of rotations completed by the magnet as it turns around the wheel’s axis, while also remembering that the bigger the wheel, the quicker the machine will move.

By moving the magnetic sensor from the wheel and onto another part of the bike, the speed control will record different numbers, allowing assistance at faster speeds. For instance, you can place the sensor on the pedal, which normally rotates more slowly than the wheel. This way, the controller will perceive the magnet rotating at a lower frequency, thus signaling a lower speed than is actually the case. In order to accomplish this, you’ll need to do the following:

1. Ensure that the electrical system and wheels are fully intact.

2. Use an allen key set tool and some tape to hold the components in place.

trek e bike chip

3. Gently detach or relocate the wheel magnet and sensor. Alternatively, you can replace your original e-bike magnet with a more powerful neodymium magnet.

4. Next, fit the magnet within the pedal bracket.

5. Finish the process by transferring the sensor to a convenient part, and then rotate it sideways to face the pedal bracket.

In most cases this will work, but if you don’t get the desired results then simply adjust the sensor location until you’re fully satisfied with the bike’s performance.

Disconnecting the sensor wiring

Another manual derestriction method, one that’s rarely used by e-bike owners, entails disconnecting the sensor cables. This will require a wire stripper/cutter tool . This will keep the speedometer’s reading at zero, meaning you won’t be cut off from speed assistance by the bike’s system even if you surpass the 25km/h limit. However, the main concern with this tuning method is knowing which particular wire to disconnect, especially since the process is often irreversible.

Therefore, you need to be sure that the wires you’re disconnecting are actually those of the speed sensor and not those of any other of the bike’s components.

De-restriction with a tuning kit

Tuning kits are mechanical devices specifically created to enhance the speed and performance of electric bikes. With tuning kits, there’s no need for using any delimitation tricks that may have adverse effects on the machine. It’s a simpler and more professional method of unleashing the speed potential of your e-bike, and one that doesn’t require too much effort, or the risk of system damage.

Choose the tuning kit specific to your Ebike brand;

  • Tuning Kit for Bosch Ebikes
  • Tuning Kit for Giant Ebikes
  • Tuning Kit for Yamaha Ebikes
  • Tuning Kit for Levo/KENEVO Ebikes
  • Other Ebike Brands

Nowadays, these kits are commonly used by both mountain bikers and city riders since they are affordable and easy to activate. Moreover, just as in the above process, they work by making the system controller perceive that the machine is running below its maximum assisted speed, so the motor engine can be triggered to continue to release power and make the electric bike run at higher speeds. In addition, this derestriction method has the benefit of allowing you to return the bike back to its normal cycling mode if you want to, all at the touch of a button.

Even though there are many types of tuning kits available in the market that can be used to unlock your bike’s speed, they are all slightly different from one another and every unit is manufactured to work only on certain kinds of engines. As a general rule of thumb, it’s advisable to refer to your make and model to find the most appropriate kit for your electric bike. For large sized e-bikes, the kit usually varies depending on whether your bike has an EVO or ride control system.

Kits that don’t require disassembly

As the name suggests, these derestriction kits don’t require the user to remove the housing before use. The component is simply attached to the bike’s sensor directly, so that it can be left fully intact.

Once fitted onto the machine, speed delimitation occurs automatically and sometimes even immediately. Nevertheless, for a few kits the tuning will only occur after the rider reaches a certain cycling speed, usually between 15-20km/hr. When this speed is surpassed, the dash panel will show half the speed that’s actually being engaged by the machine.

Electric Bike Speedometer

Internal installation kits

This category of kit mainly consists of modules that are directly connected to the system controller and bypass the collection system. In the e-bike industry they are commonly referred to as ‘dongles,’ typically consisting of a micro controller and around 4 connection cables.

The installation process of dongles may vary depending on the specific model, but they all require that the crankcase that contains the assistance system be removed first before the device can be installed. Once this is done the device can easily be introduced into the e-bike system to derestrict its speed.

One of the main advantages of these internal installation units is that they can be activated and deactivated at any given moment, without having to dismantle anything. In fact, most of them have an automatic shutdown mechanism that allows the assistance system to return to normal working condition without any manual intervention. Similarly, some are fitted with switches that can activate or deactivate the e-bike’s speed potential by simply pressing a button found on the keypad.

In Conclusion

Manual tuning and tuning kits are both effective tuning methods that can be used to subvert the speed assist limitation on your e-bike, so that you can ride as fast as the motor can deliver!

Don’t forget to pick up the essential tools you need before you begin your project;

Have fun out there, and be safe; always wear a helmet. 😉

PHENOMENAL review. Thank you so much for comparing against the EP8-RS and Bafang on power at those 3 cadences. Can you share how long each bike went in the range test, please? The EP8-RS's power advantage alone is likely swaying me toward the Rise M20, and some users have reported that in the battle of the 42 lb carbon Rise M20 vs. 42 Lb EXe 9.7, the Rise gets more range and climb out of a similar-capacity (360-ish WHr) battery. Net, the EP8-RS may turn out to be like piston engines when TQ50 is like rotary/wankels. Tried/true had the reliability, power, & range advantage over the smoothness (in TQ's case, the silence), fewer moving parts, no valve float.

Such great e-bike content Knut! Thanks again. I'm sold on the Forestal personally and will buy one in the Spring unless something significantly improved is released from one of the other manufacturers. Hopefully you can add the Fazua motor to this combo.

  • Oct 15, 2022

Quite curious if some motor designs use more energy to operate, lost to friction and what not? The Eondrive is very powerful, with only a 360 w battery, does it use up it's battery juice quicker than the others as a result? Does the TQ HP ring gear design possibly have more friction or energy loss as I read one rider report indicating that the battery really didn't take much operation/ climbing before it was completely out of energy. I'd like to see the different motors (the Eon, the TQ & the F60) be rated in terms of range (with the same rider input), noise, free pedaling, power, and how natural they feel. We are getting more options but here in the US I have to base my entire buying decision mostly on Knut's reviews. for the category of bikes i'm looking at (150-170mm travel) we now have the Simplon Pmax TQ featuring the TQ engine, the Forestal Siryon featuring the Eondrive & soon the Transition Relay offering the Fazua 60. And of course Spesh is about to release something big in the near future. All of these have very close to my preferred geo so at this point it's mostly about picking out the best motor for my needs.

  • Oct 17, 2022

The eondrive is really powerfull and will consume a lot of energy if ridden at low cadence and max assistance. It's as powerful as a full-fat motor. The EP8-RS too can consume a lot at max power + low cadence. We've got a bit of range data for the Eondrive, HPR50 and EP8-RS, but unfortunately not for the Fazua 60. I believe the Fazua has low consumption, but that's down to motor programming. How hard you have to work to get good power from the motor. I think the motors will have similar maximum efficiency. But there could be a difference in what cadence is the most economical. If you keep the cadence up and don't run max assistance everywhere, I don't think there's much between them. Having ridden several SLs lately, I'm getting the impression there are two directions. The powerful SL bikes, perhaps aimed at ebikers. And the more stingy motors that focus more on a natural ride feel, like the TQ and Fazua, perhaps aimed more at people coming from mtb. The difference between an EP8-RS and Fazua 60 is quite significant when pedalling calmly up a hill.

Great content Knut. Nice work I have the 2018 Focus Jam2 and recently bought the Fuel EXe because it was time for updated motor tech (and the other full fat bikes are really chunky in the down tube). Also great to have a spare bike if one is waiting on parts. Loving the Trek on the trails but I rinse the battery in under 20km with 600m of climbing and sometimes miss the power of the Jam2 (especially on the fire road climb up again) even though it’s only the Shimano e8000 at 70nm. Been experimenting with mode assist settings in the app and got to thinking. Remember when Bosch released the CX4 at 80nm then did an OTA update and bumped it to 85nm? What are the chances of Trek doing that and bumping the power to 55 or 60nm? Sure I’d go through the battery faster but that’s what the range extenders for (as soon as we can get our hands on them). Surely they’re restricting max output for the initial mass test in the market..? What are the chances…

Road interloper looking for help. Glad to have bumped into Knut 7's review of the TQ HPR50, especially his coverage of tuning options and their effect on assist power. I hope he can help me better understand how the assist level might translate to a road e-bike, so that I can adapt the HPR50's tuning options to my limited condition. Angina keeps me from pushing more than 100W on a sustained basis, which becomes a challenge when climbing. [One issue is that even at the 200%, the most assist I can get on a sustained basis is 100Wx2=200W, leaving 50 to 100W of motor untapped. I've asked TQ about a boost to 300% for High, got the same uninformative response.] My interest is increasing the amount of HPR50 assist wattage at lower input. Can I expect a noticeable difference in response between Eco set say to 125W/125% vs 250W/200% (sustained max) , Mid at 225W/150% vs 250W/200%, and High set to 300W/200% (peak max) in both scenarios, with my input at say 75W, 100W, and (briefly) 125W ? Any other thoughts or insights are welcome. Thanks.

PS. Would setting Eco, Mid and High all to 300W/200% make them all respond the same and make switching between them pointless, or does the TQ algorithm impose some differentiation?

Thank you. The motor seems set up to respond in proportion to rider input: stronger rider effort gets more assist, reaching maximum assist at high wattage. Correct? I don't get anything near the higher assist wattages due to my low input. My condition would be better served if the motor provided higher assist earlier, in response to the lower input. I'm trying to figure out what tuning settings will bring me closest to that goal. Simplifying (I hope) my example, I'm asking whether I would feel a beneficial difference by upping the Mid settings from 200W/150% to 250W/200% (or even 300W,/200%) and whether the difference would take effect at rider inputs as low as 75W, 100W, or 125W, or not at all at less than 150W. Even if it amounts to speculation, your educated guesswork would be sounder than mine, but no problem if you decline because I'm asking too much.

Why not just test different settings? Seems easier than asking on a forum. Just crank all the bars up then all the bars down. Try different things and figure out what you like.

True. Will do some testing, when I have the bike. I was asking Knut because he assessed the tuning parameters more deeply than other reviewers. I'm trying to understand how TQ's algorithm operates, which is not all that well defined beyond aiming at a 'natural' feel. By comparison Fazua seems to also aim at a natural feel for the capable rider, but also provides what I'm looking for as an option. According to its Customizer description, Fazua's "Support Relation" can be set such that a limited rider can get the set maximum assistance with low input, my holy grail.

Pardon my interloping: already committed to the Domane+ SLR 6 road bike. Just figuring out how the get the most from my medicated 100W of input out of the TQ motor. Not the likeliest forum, but Knut's review was more probing than most. Thanks. Will let it rest there.

When riding in the max assistance mode on my new Scott Lumen 900, I have the motor that frequently turns of and on, when I am peddling at the same pace. Very annoying. Does somebody has the same issue? Does this have something to do with the pedal slider in the app (turtle)? Thx for your answers!

Trek Crossrip +

Commutes Are Faster and Less Sweaty on the Speedy Trek CrossRip+

This full-featured commuter offers road-bike handling and a boost up to 28mph

Price: $4,200 Weight: 40 lb. (52cm) Class: Type 3 Motor: Bosch Performance Speed 350 watt/63 Nm Battery capacity: 500 Wh Frame material: Aluminum Drivetrain: SRAM Force1 1x11, cable actuated Brakes: SRAM Force hydraulic disc Wheel size: 700c The right bike for: Riders who want a road-bike experience and a faster commute

If you’re not ready to drop $4,200 on a new e-bike, don’t ride Trek ’s CrossRip+. Because if you do, forget it: You’ll drop the plastic at the register faster than you can say “63 Newton-meters of torque.” If you’re a red-blooded cyclist, you’ll become addicted to this utilitarian road e-bike and its smooth and torquey Bosch motor that boosts you up to the 28mph cutoff speed.

With a drop bar, traditional road-riding position, and road-bike-like handling, the CrossRip+ will feel more natural to an experienced cyclist than it will a newbie. Those position and handling qualities also make the CrossRip+ more suited to longer rides on mixed terrain than for battling the tight confines of a dense city .

Trek Crossrip +

A rear rack—designed for mounting bags, not for the direct attachment of cargo —slickly integrated lights, full-coverage fenders, and a kickstand are included, so you’re just a set of bags (and maybe a bell) away from giving up the car for many of your commutes and errands. The stock 38mm-wide tires feature toughened sidewalls to help protect against flats, and do smooth the ride a bit. But this bike’s frame is stout, and this is a fast bike, so you’re going to hit things hard, and the ride can be jarring at times.

The CrossRip+ makes a lot sense when you ride it. It’s full featured and very utilitarian, and makes “ugh” trips easy .

Trek Crossrip +

Front and rear LED lights are integrated into the frame.

Trek Crossrip +

Aluminum fenders and reflective sidewall tires are standard.

A sturdy kickstand is included when you buy a CrossRip+.

Trek Crossrip +

Stopping Power

The speedy CrossRip+ has powerful hydraulic disc brakes.

Trek Crossrip +

Shaped to Match

Tube shaping helps the external battery look more integrated.

The CrossRip Family

There’s one CrossRip+, and its offered in one build.

The frame is aluminum, with quick-release dropouts, an integrated (and removable) rear rack, a water-bottle mount on the down tube, fender mounts, and a kickstand, which is attached at the rear dropout. The fork features an aluminum steerer, carbon legs, and thru-axle dropouts.

A Bosch Performance Speed mid-drive motor provides assist up to 28mph, making this bike a class three/speed bike. An externally mounted Bosch 500 watt hour battery—currently the largest the company offers—powers the Crossrip+’s motor and lights. Like any e-bike, range varies wildly depending on the level of assist, terrain, and other factors, but you can expect 20 to 100 miles between charges. The battery may be charged in the bike, or removed for charging. A keyed lock secures the battery to the frame.

The Bosch Purion controller and display is compact and has a backlit, monochrome screen. It provides speed and distance info, current mode, battery charge, and estimated range. From it you can control the assist level, as well as the light mode.

The CrossRip+’s drivetrain is SRAM Force1 1x11 with a wide-range 11-42t cassette. Stopping is managed by SRAM’s Force hydraulic disc brakes. The rest of the build comes from Bontrager and includes a tubeless-ready wheelset, 38mm tires with flat-resistant casing and reflective sidewalls (the tires are not tubeless ready), and aluminum seatpost, stem, and handlebar. Bontrager’s IsoZone padding under the bar tape provides a bit of extra shock absorption.

Integrated front and rear LED lights, full-coverage aluminum fenders with mud flaps, a kickstand, and a rear pannier carrier are stock. Note the rear structure isn’t a rack—it doesn’t have a platform to carry a box or a grocery bag—but rather a platform for attaching a pannier or pannier system.

Trek Crossrip +

If you like the CrossRip+’s platform, but aren’t looking for an e-bike, Trek offers three CrossRip models from $1,070 to $1,890. All these bikes feature wide-range 2x drivetrains and disc brakes, however, they do not come standard (though they can be fitted with them) with fenders, rack, lights, or kickstand like the CrossRip+.

Endurance Road Geometry

The CrossRip+’s geometry is similar to that of an endurance road bike: sporty and a little upright.

Trek Crossrip+ geometry

Getting down into finer details, the 49cm and 52cm Crossrip+’s chainstays are 435mm, which is in the ballpark for a endurance bike that can take pretty big tires, but then jump to a whopping 472mm on the largest sizes (55, 58, 61cm). That’s part of the reason there’s an almost 50mm jump in wheelbase (1,037mm to 1,085mm) between the 52cm and 55cm, despite those sizes sharing the same reach (387mm). If you happen to be in the 5-foot-7 to 5-foot-10 range, you could probably ride either size and would get to choose if you want a shorter wheelbase for a more lively ride, or a longer one for more stability (note the stack difference: 560mm versus 579mm).

Ride Impressions

The CrossRip+’s riding position, handling, and overall experience is similar to a road bike. Experienced road cyclists will adapt easily to the CrossRip+ and will quickly fall in love with the speed and the sensation of floating up hills offered by the smooth Bosch motor.

But it was the multi-surface/multi-condition/long-distance versatility that makes the CrossRip+ such a special e-bike. The combination of wide and tough 38mm tires, a drop bar, near-road-bike handling, and the strong push of the Bosch motor make for a bike that lets the rider take the shortest or most fun route without always having to stick to paved roads. And the full-coverage fenders and excellent SRAM disc brakes make this a four-season, all-weather e-bike and killer commuter.

For longer and mixed-surface rides, the drop bar was quite functional. Not only could I change hand positions for comfort, but I could also get low at higher speeds (improving the rider’s aerodynamic profile will increase range). Riders can also switch to a more confidence-inspiring position for dirt paths and trails.

Trek Crossrip +

One thing that experienced cyclists might find a bit frustrating to adapt to is getting in sync with the motor when riding out of the saddle, “It’s very difficult to get the motor surge timed to your pedal stroke,” said one tester. Most e-bike motors provide their best experience when the rider is seated and pedals with a high, consistent cadence, so this isn’t a knock against the CrossRip+ specifically. But the CrossRip+ is so suited to longer and varied rides that it’s inevitable that the rider will be doing standing climbing with it, which magnifies the motor’s shortcoming in this situation.

With so many things affecting an e-bike’s power consumption, it’s hard to give a precise number for the CrossRip+’s range. But here’s what one of our testers got when he used the CrossRip+ for a 29-mile (each way) commute with about 1,800 feet of climbing.

If he used Eco mode exclusively, and was careful, he could do the round trip on one charge. But if he wanted to get there faster, he could use Sport mode with a bit of Turbo for the hills. He’d use the entire charge for one half of his commute, and need to recharge at work before riding home. In the latter case, he averaged 18mph, and the ride took about an hour and 40 minutes.

If you think one half of your commute will use more than one half of your charge, note that the Bosch battery charger is clunky, so you’re not going to want to carry it with you every day. A standard charger will cost you about $190, and will recharge the CrossRip+’s battery in about four and a half hours.

The front and rear lighting is well integrated, and kicks out decent light. However, if you’re planning to do serious nighttime commuting, you’ll probably want to supplement the integrated headlight with secondary unit.

We weren’t thrilled to discover the CrossRip+’s rear rack isn’t really a rack—there’s no platform, so there’s no way to carry anything—but rather a structure for mounting panniers, so be prepared for an additional investment if you want to carry anything on the bike. If you prefer to wear a backpack, the structure can be removed and the rear light relocated into the frame.

Trek Crossrip +

The CrossRip+ handles well, though its handling is better suited to open roads and higher speeds and less toward salmoning through mid-city rush-hour traffic. The big tires and padding under the bar tape do help smooth the ride, but the CrossRip’s overall ride certainly is firm, and occasionally jarring. At least some of this is because the CrossRip+ is so fast that you’re hitting a lot of bumps faster and harder than you would on an unpowered bike.

The CrossRip+ is a versatile multi-surface bike with the power, speed, handling, and riding position that make it an excellent choice for long and fast commutes, as well as longer, assisted pleasure bike rides.

Heybike summer sale takes $500 off e-bikes with free accessories and bundle options, starting from $999

Heybike has a  summer sale  that is now in full swing, taking  up to $500 off e-bikes , with bundle deals available as well as free accessories that are included along with your purchase, depending on the model. While the brand’s popular Ranger Foldable Cargo e-bike is sold out, the next biggest discount is on the  Mars 2.0 Folding e-bike for  $999 shipped . Normally fetching $1,499 outside of these sales, this upgraded model has seen significantly fewer and smaller discounts than its predeccessor. It’s been included in Best Buy’s 24-hour flash sales a few times so far in 2024, usually to this price or $100 higher, though the biggest we’ve seen this year is a drop to $899 back during Valentine’s Day sales. Today’s deal is a 33% markdown that saves you $500 and returns it to the second-lowest price we have tracked – just $100 above the all-time low from February.

The Mars 2.0 e-bike comes in four colors ( pumpkin orange ,  dusty blue ,  granite grey , and  leather black ) and equipped with a 750W (1,200W peak) rear hub motor alongside a removable 48V battery that can carry the bike up to 28 MPH for up to 45 miles on a single charge. Usually fetching $4,999, this is the lowest price drop that we have tracked for this bundle, with only three previous discounts to speak of – the first two dropping costs to $5,499, while last month we saw it hit the $4,999 low for the first time. You can find other  third-party sellers offering this mower  with its regular four batteries alone at the same discounted rate, meaning this bundle from Amazon is giving you two extra 5.0Ah batteries for no added cost. There’s also a similar bundle on  the mower with four 12.0Ah batteries and an e-steer wheel at  $5,499 , down from $6,597.

This  riding mower from EGO Power+  is powered by the four 10.0Ah batteries in order to cover up to 2 acres of land on one continuous run (extended a bit more with the two extra batteries). Its 42-inch weather-resistant steel cutting deck houses four independent brushless motors, which total up to rival a 22-horsepower engine, moving it at a max speed of 8 MPH. There are 10 cutting heights to choose from, ranging from 1.5 inches and 4.5 inches, with three different driving modes and a 3-in-1 functionality for mulching, bagging, and/or side discharging. It also sports some premium features like the 32 LED lights laid out on its front, sides, and rear for those early morning or late evening jobs – and even Bluetooth connectivity and a USB charging port for devices.

EAST OAK 30-inch Digital electric smoker within post for Heybike summer sale

EAST OAK’S 30-inch Digital Electric Smoker hits $255 low

Amazon is offering the  EAST OAK 30-inch Digital Electric Smoker for  $254.99 shipped . Normally going for $300, this appliance has seen five previous discounts since the new year began, with the first four dropping to the same $270 rate once per month from January through April, and the most recent taking things further to the $255 low in May for the first time since September of 2023, which is repeated here in today’s deal.

Sporting a compact, vertical design with four racks to place your meat and veggies,  this electric smoker  utilizes 800W of power and wood chips for that smoky flavor you love with reduced emissions lower than that of charcoal. Standing 18.97 inches by 17.56 inches by 32.44 inches, with 725 square-feet of cooking space, its door has a glass section allowing you to directly see your food at its various stages of cooking, with a meat probe for monitoring the food’s internal temperatures. It features a digital control panel that gives you real-time readouts of temperatures and times, along with a remote for controlling its settings when not directly in front of it. Its side-loading wood chip loader can hold enough to continue cooking for 2 to 3 hours without needing to be refilled, maintaining a temperature range between 100 degrees and 275 degrees Fahrenheit for that low and slow cooking that yields the most tender of BBQ. Also comes with a water bowl and a drip pan.

You’ll find a smaller and cheaper option in the  EAST OAK 30-inch Black model  from the same line as the above model, currently available for  $200 , down from $230. This model sports the same general design as the above smoker, with one major and instantly obvious difference: there is no window to view inside while its in use, so you will have to either trust whatever recipe you’re going by, or be ok with occasionally opening it up and losing heat/smoke.
