Because some of Spain’s most popular cities are absolutely stifling in the height of summer, they’re really best avoided until the shoulder seasons – October is probably the best month to visit cities like Madrid , for instance.

But even though some parts of Spain can get cooler in late October, in some places it’s still totally possible to include lying on the beach in your vacation plans! You’ll need to check with current weather forecasts, but especially if you’re going to the Costa del Sol, you might want to consider bringing your bathing suit with you. Some average temperatures for Spain in October, listed by city, are:

• Barcelona – 70F high, 54F low
• Madrid – 68F high, 46F low
• Seville – 79F high, 55F low
• Santiago – 84F high, 48F low
• Malaga – 73F high, 57F low

The rainfall levels in Spain in October vary by region and city, but the country-wide average is just over 68mm for October. Barcelona, Valencia and Madrid average about 10 rainy days in October, while Seville, Granada and Malaga average only 8. First, you should expect the weather to change considerably depending on where you travel. Spain’s climate varies significantly from region to region. 

• Most of the country has cold temperatures in January, especially in the northern and central areas. If you come to Madrid, for example, it can be pretty cold, with daytime temperatures from 41°F (5°C) to 54°F (12°C). I mean, this is the coldest month after February!

Spain in August is one of the most popular months to visit Spain, and it is also high season as the coastal areas are at their prime! Places like the Costa Brava and the Balearic and Canary Islands offer the perfect weather for long beach days. You can also expect local neighborhoods to be less crowded than usual.

While some might call it a “dead month,” Spain still welcomes many visitors, particularly in beach towns and tourist hubs. Also, neighborhoods like Gràcia or Poble Sec in Barcelona are less crowded, and the Barrio de Salamanca in Madrid is also much quieter than usual. 

• Northern Spain enjoys pleasant weather, with temperatures between 68°F (20°C) and 77°F (25°C).
• Central Spain, including Madrid, has temperatures ranging from 86°F (30°C) to 95°F (35°C) or even higher! Here’s why locals usually leave the city for vacation. 
• Southern regions can get extremely hot, with temperatures exceeding 95°F (35°C) and even higher. You see, that kind of extreme weather is just too much for my liking.

My advice for brave travelers who want to see the hype around the famous Ibiza and Mallorca in the Summer is to book everything in advance and plan your trip well. Always check the weather, pack accordingly, and please use sunscreen and stay hydrated! 

You will have a blast! Hot weather is just the perfect excuse for enjoying ice cream and refreshing drinks at any hour. (As if we needed a reason for those activities in the first place!)

Spain in September

September is an excellent time to visit Spain. It is considered shoulder season after the peak of Summer; the weather is mild and comfortable throughout the country, with wind and occasional rainfall during the nights. Also, the islands and coastal areas are still perfect for going to the beach without extreme heat but way less crowded. 

You should expect many cultural events and a great time to visit vineyards as the grapes are at their ripest and the harvest occurs. In Seville, the Bienal de Flamenco is a must-see!

But take this with a grain of salt since October is still great weather and a month full of activities, making it a relatively popular time for tourists.

• Northern Spain has cooler temperatures, from 59°F (15°C) during the day to cooler evenings, and it does rain. 
• Central Spain, including Madrid, enjoys mild temperatures around 68°F (20°C) to 77°F (25°C), and evenings are cooler. 
• Southern Spain still has warm and pleasant weather (I know!) with temperatures between 68°F (20°C) and 77°F (25°C). (it seems like the South is often a few months behind the season.)

I think it’s clear by now that my best advice is to book specific activities, flights, or accommodations in advance to ensure a smooth and enjoyable visit.

Visiting Spain in November is perfect for those who prefer a more laid-back and budget-friendly travel experience, as you can take advantage of the low season. 

Hotels usually launch weekend offers and discounts. One of the best things is that cities, towns, and villages are less crowded and, as a result, less stressed. You can visit museums, monuments, and restaurants without queuing up.

It is also a great time to do the Camino de Santiago, a pilgrimage route done annually by millions of pilgrims over the centuries. It starts in France and finishes in Galicia, in Santiago de Compostela.

April to May and September to October are the best times for perfect weather

In central Spain and on the Mediterranean coast, the spring and autumn seasons are marked by sunlit days and pleasant weather perfect for strolling and outdoor dining in terrazas , with temperatures cooling down by nightfall. 

Conversely, the summer months of July to August are scorching, with temperatures in central and southern Spain reaching the mid-to-high 40s°C. Madrid empties out in August , as locals go on summer holidays and many establishments close to avoid the oppressive heat. These summer months are ideal for visiting the  northern regions , such as  Asturias ,  País Vasco (Basque Country),  Galicia and  Cantabria , which have milder temperatures.

May to September is the best time to hit the beach

Spain is blessed with nearly 5000km (3107 miles) of coastline, stretching from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. Archipelagos in the Balearic Sea and off the northwestern African coast cap off the country’s maritime allure.

When the weather starts warming up in the wake of spring, Spanish beach destinations come to life, hitting their peak in August.  Ibiza reaches its peak party atmosphere in July and August, when top DJs fly in to play in its world-famous clubs. If you wish to avoid crowded shorelines, opt for going in May and June. 

April to May and September to October are the best times to walk the Camino de Santiago

The popular period for walking this thousand-year-old pilgrimage route towards  Santiago de Compostela is between May and September, for favorable weather and longer daylight hours. To avoid those busy months, opt for the spring and autumn shoulder seasons when trails are less crowded, offering a more tranquil and introspective experience.

September to October is the best time for enjoying wine-harvest festivals 

Oenophiles will particularly enjoy visiting Spain’s most famous wine-making regions, such as  La Rioja and  Ribera del Duero , during the traditional harvest season that starts in September. Logroño, the capital of La Rioja, kicks off its San Mateo festival, where you can take part in grape-crushing activities, parades and, of course, exquisite wine tasting for astoundingly low prices per copa . 

For an off-the-tourist-radar experience, visit Valdepeñas in the  Castilla-La Mancha region on the first week of September, when the entire town takes its love of vino to a whole new level with the annual harvest festival, featuring a wine tunnel and wine-tasting events in subterranean bodegas (wineries). There’s even a wine bus to take you home after a whole day of Dionysus worship. 

November to February is the best time for budget travelers

November to January is the best time to indulge in olive-oil festivals

The annual olive harvest season is celebrated with olive-oil festivals all over the country, especially in the regions of  Andalucía and Catalonia. Check out the gastronomic agenda for the Martos Olive Festival in the city of Jaen, which takes place annually on December 8, while the Siurana Olive Oil Fair happens every November.  

January to February and July to August are the best times for sales shopping

Usually held after Christmas and the during summer holidays, when people have time to shop, the traditional rebajas  (sales) periods in Spain is regulated by the Spanish government to protect consumers and local businesses. During these winter and summer sales seasons, bargain hunters can  stretch their shopping budget, as stores use this time to clear their inventory and offer significant discounts reaching up to 70% off.

January to April is best time to try calçots

La Calçotada is a yearly gastronomic festival in the  Catalonian region , where large groups gather to eat grilled calçots – a type of green onion harvested in the winter – dipped in delectable sauces. 

January to March are the best times for skiing

Ski resorts usually open in December and close right after Easter in April. Peak snow conditions run from January to March in the  Pyrenees  and January to February in Central Spain. Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel. 

The authorities in Spain set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the Spanish Embassy in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Spain.

Passport validity requirements

Spain follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must: 

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements. Renew your passport if you need to. 

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen. 

Visa requirements

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Spain, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel: 

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Spain are different.  

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries as well, make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. 

If you are visiting Spain and need to extend your visa-free stay for exceptional reasons, such as a medical emergency, you must  apply to the immigration authorities (‘Extranjería’) (in Spanish).

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit.

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

British nationals living in Spain do not need their passports to be stamped. Actively show your proof of residence, such as the foreigner’s identity card (‘la tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ or ‘TIE’), when presenting your passport at Spanish border control. 

At Spanish border control, you may need to show:

• a return or onward ticket
• proof of your travel insurance
• you have enough money for your stay - the amount varies depending on your accommodation
• a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address if you’re staying at your own property
• an invitation or proof of address if staying with a third party, friends or family, such as a ‘carta de invitation’ completed by your hosts

Using the e-gates

Use the desks staffed by border officers. If you’re aged 18 or over, and airport staff instruct you to, you may be able to use e-gates when they are working.

If you use an e-gate, make sure you get your passport stamped.

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period 

To stay longer, you must meet the Spanish government’s entry requirements . If you’re in Spain with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

If you cannot return to the UK before your visa-free limit expires,  contact the Spanish government’s national information service . Dial 060 from a Spanish phoneline (in Spanish, with English speaking operators available).

Travelling between Spain and Gibraltar

Spanish border checks can cause delays when crossing between Spain and Gibraltar. If you are travelling to Spain through Gibraltar, check the travel advice for entry requirements for Gibraltar .

There is no charge to enter or leave Gibraltar. Do not hand over money to anybody claiming there is a charge.

Unaccompanied minors

Spanish law considers anyone aged 17 and under to be a minor. If an unaccompanied minor comes to the attention of the Spanish authorities (particularly in connection with criminal incidents or when in hospital), they will be considered vulnerable and may be taken to a minor’s centre until a parent or guardian is found.

Customs rules

There are strict rules about what goods can be taken into and out of Spain (PDF) . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Taking food into Spain

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries . There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed required for medical reasons. 

Taking money into Spain

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more. You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.

Expat issues 'complicated' travel warning for Brits holidaying to Spain this summer

If you’re counting down the days to your summer holiday to Spain , you might want to mark down a few dates on your calender.

From Barcelona to the Costa del Sol, we all know Spain is much loved fly and flop destination for Brits – a staggering 17.8 million UK tourists flocked to the country in 2023.

However, one cultural difference could catch unsuspecting travelers off guard: bank holidays.

While bank holidays in the UK are mostly on Mondays (with a few exceptions such as Good Friday and Christmas ) Spain has them across various days of the week.

Yep, Spaniards aren’t always given the gift of a long weekend, as supermarkets, restaurants and clubs shut their doors for numerous celebrated days across the year that occur on any and all weekdays.

This fact caught Stephanie Saint Remy , a YouTube content creator, off guard, when she moved to the country. The revelation led her to her share the knowledge with those planning to travel like her.

Prime holiday season is rapidly approaching, so what events should you note down if you’re travelling in the coming months? Fear not, for the hard work has been done for you.

Here are the public holidays across Spain for July and August (although like Stephanie says, these vary from region to region):

• Thursday 25th July – Both the National Day of Galicia and St. James’s Day, impacting Galicia, Basque Country, Cantabria, Madrid and Navarre.
• Monday 5th August – Our Lady of Africa, taking place in Ceuta.
• Thursday 15th August – The Assumption of Mary, a national bank holiday.

For those travelling in the later months of the year to escape the floods of other tourists and the chill settling in over the UK, all dates can be found online .

Festivals and Events in Spain in October

If you're visiting Spain in October, you're probably not headed to the beach—the weather in fall isn't exactly conducive to getting a suntan, but if you're partial to mildly warm days and quiet tourist attractions, it might just be the best time to go.

Many towns, especially on the Costa del Sol , have their annual feria (Spanish for festival) in October, so expect street stalls selling food and drink as the locals indulge in their seasonal revelries. This is also prime time for film festivals in Spain, and what better way to spend an autumn evening than by cozying up with a good movie? In 2020, many events have been altered or canceled, so check the websites of organizers for updated information.

Catch a Jazz Show in Catalonia

In Barcelona , toward the end of the month, you can hear world-class jazz at the famous Voll-Damm Barcelona International Jazz Festival , bringing big-name musicians and up-and-coming artists to more than a dozen venues around the city. 2020's festival will feature María José Llergo on October 28, Martirio and Chano Domínguez on October 31, and Brad Mehldau and Mario Biondi in November. Some of the concerts have been pushed back to December or later in 2021.

Party Like a Local on the Costa del Sol

To take advantage of the last few days of really warm weather, many towns on the Costa del Sol hold their local feria , or fair, in October. You'll find festivals in Nerja , Fuengirola, Cádiar (including a wine fountain providing free vino), and San Pedro de Alcántara near Puerto Banus. The San Pedro feria— one of the last ones of the year—offers something for everyone: a "parade of giant heads," fireworks at the beach, live music, and more. As the location is directly adjacent to one of Marbella's most popular family destinations, you can also enjoy great restaurants and cafes while you're in the area. 2020's Feria de San Pedro Alcántara will take place on October 14.

Watch a Flamenco Competition in Seville

Visit Seville 

The remarkable Royal Alcázar and Plaza de España attract travelers to the Andalusian capital of Seville year-round, but the city's annual Guitar Festival is an added draw in October. At this event, guests are treated to performances by world-class guitarists and can even indulge in a very traditional flamenco guitar competition (a quintessentially Spanish experience). 2020's event will be held from October 8 to 24.

Spain's capital is heaven for the design-obsessed, boasting such architectural feats as the 17th-century Parque del Buen Retiro, the unique brick CaixaForum, and the Herrerian-style Plaza Mayor. So, it makes sense that Madrid would be the location for Architecture Week— Semana de la Arquitectura —a trade fair with exhibits, children's workshops, and public events held in some of Madrid 's most famous buildings. All face-to-face events planned for 2020 have been moved to 2021, but the organizers will continue to put on virtual programming in place of the fair from September 30 to October 7.

Celebrate the Patron Saints of Spain

Spain follows the age-old Catholic tradition of honoring each town's patron saints. The majority of these special Saints' Days feature offerings and shows of respect to the saints, as well as parades and processions where statues are carried through the streets. Look for a feria in a small city or town to experience the custom firsthand.

• Fiestas del Pilar : The city of Zaragoza in Aragón honors the city's patron saint, Our Lady of the Pillar, with a week of shows, contests, and parades. Highlights include the offering of flowers and fruits to the Virgin Mary and the parade featuring floats made entirely of glass. 2020's Fiestas del Pilar has been canceled.
• Feria de Fuengirola : Also called Feria del Rosario, this celebration in Fuengirola is held in honor of Spain's national holiday (October 12) at the fairground. Locals bring their horses and carriages and wear their finest traditional garb: flamenco dresses for women and suits for men. The fair includes rides, live music, flamenco dancing, and fair foods, but in 2020, it's been canceled.
• Feria de Nerja : Nerja hosts a week-long celebration for its patron saints, the Virgin of Anguish and St. Michael the Archangel. Festivities take over much of the town but focus mainly on the east and west sides of the town center. This family-friendly festival features music, horses, parades, concerts, fair rides, dancing, and children's activities. In 2020, tentative dates are October 7 to 11.
• Fiestas de San Lucas : In Jaén—the world's olive oil capital—the city honors St. Luke with concerts, dancing, local foods, and cultural and sporting events for longer than a week. 2020's celebrations have been postponed to 2021.
• Romería de Valme : In Dos Hermanas, near Seville, locals celebrate the Romería de Valme religious pilgrimage on the third Sunday of October every year. The colorful processions honor Our Lady of Valme, and statues of her are paraded through the streets. The 2020 pilgrimage has been suspended.

Join in on the Bilbao Night Marathon

The Bilbao Bizkaia Night Marathon attracts hundreds of runners to the de facto capital of Basque Country every October. The run—kicking off around 7 p.m. and lasting past midnight—winds through the magical streets of Bilbao, between skyscrapers surrounded by green mountains. Finishers are treated to fireworks, music, and performances. Participants can choose between a 10K, half marathon, or full marathon. In 2020, the Bilbao Night Marathon has been made into a virtual challenge.

Dance the Sardana in Girona

The Fires de Sant Narcis in Girona, Catalonia, celebrates its beloved Sant Narcís with quite a spectacle. You'll find hundreds of locals doing the sardana (a traditional Catalan dance) and the local castellers building a soaring human tower. Giant figures and heads made of papier-mâché roam the streets while revelers participate in sports competitions and roast chestnut feats. In 2020, the event will take place from October 28 to November 1.

Brave the Horror and Fantasy Film Festival in San Sebastian

The Horror and Fantasy Film Festival

Although Spain doesn't celebrate Halloween in the way the U.S. does, this spooky film festival makes for a good stand-in. San Sebastian's annual Horror and Fantasy Film Festival , established in 1990, is an intriguing combination of horror and sci-fi. It features full-length films and shorts in the categories of horror, fantasy, sci-fi, animation, and classics from all over the world. Besides movie screenings, you'll run into street shows, music, exhibitions, and comedy. 2020's festival will take place from October 26 to November 1.

Attend an LGBTQ+ Film Festival in Madrid

LesGaiCineMad is the most significant LGBTQ+-centered film festival in the Spanish-speaking world, with a collection of more than 3,000 international films. The festival shows feature-length films, shorts, video art, and documentaries and is known internationally for its work in the discovery, subtitling, and release of Spanish-American productions. It's a portal for LGBTQ+ Spanish film distribution, and it's scheduled for October 29 to November 14, 2020.

From city weekends to island escapes, here's where to go in Spain

The country is home to various island groups, too. The Balearics, consisting of Mallorca , Menorca, Ibiza and lesser-visited Formentera, are perfect holiday choices. Another island within the Canary archipelago, Tenerife has a landscape that’s as mesmerising and unusual as its counterpart Lanzarote. On the mainland, Marbella is one of the major holiday destinations within the southern province of Andalusia. The Costa del Sol resort has a backdrop of the Sierra Blanca mountains and a vast 27-kilometre stretch of shoreline. As well as its beautiful beaches, the area is known for its golf courses.

The coast is also home to the aptly named Golden Mile (a stretch of some serious real estate), which leads down to Puerto Banús marina, with its staggering super-yachts and fancy restaurants.

It may have a somewhat rowdy reputation (which isn’t totally unjustified), but there’s another side to Ibiza, away from the super-clubs (of which there are indeed many) on the San Antonio strip. The island has long-attracted spiritual sorts, here for the magnetism and the sunsets, which are a ritual every evening.

In the hillside Dalt Vila (or Old Town), stroll the cobbled streets, or head to quieter villages, such as Santa Gertrudis, which has brilliant boutiques, traditional bars and excellent restaurants such as Bottega Il Buco.

Where to stay: If you’re here for hedonism in the form of food, book a stay at Oku , which has a superb Japanese restaurant where the chef is known to wander over to your seat to cook tableside. It has a robata grill and a raw bar, as well as a sake selection, for added authenticity.

Often overlooked by tourists for Barcelona, Spain’s capital may not have beaches but it has plenty of landmarks, from its wide boulevards and pristine parks to its incredible culture. At the Prado Museum, visitors can admire works by Spanish masters including Velázquez and Goya.

Another highlight of Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, the city’s main square, which dates back to the 15th century. The grand Royal Palace is also worth a visit – in between tapas pit-stops, of course.

Gran Canaria

For buzzy nightlife, head to Playa del Inglés on the southern coast; or marvel at the scenery of the Maspalomas Dunes overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Where to stay: Salobre Hotel Resort & Serenity is a five-star resort that has two 18-hole golf courses – and there are buggies ready for you at reception. The peaceful Maspalomas retreat also has an excellent wellness centre, a shuttle service to whisk you to the beach and cabanas around the pool.

There are lots of lovely places to visit in Andalucia, but Seville is one of the most popular and with good reason. For a start, warm weather is all but guaranteed – the Spaniards don’t call it the ‘Frying Pan’ for nothing.

The city’s old town and former Jewish quarter, Barrio de Santa Cruz, is home to the huge Gothic cathedral, the Alcázar Palace and the La Giralda bell tower. For a lively night out, visit one of Seville’s famous flamenco shows or a hole-in-the-wall bar. And if you’re hoping to stockpile ceramics, stop by the Tirana neighbourhood, which has lots of pottery studios.

Where to stay: An hour or so’s drive south of the city (but worth it for the peace and quiet), Hacienda de San Rafael is an 18th-century hideaway on an olive estate in the Andalusian countryside. It’s roughly halfway between Seville and Jerez, so you’ll be able to visit both cities during your stay.

The Best Time to Book a Flight for Domestic, International, and Summer Travel

Here are our best tips for booking travel in 2024.

When to Book Flights for Domestic Travel

Buying plane tickets is something of an art form. Ideally, you want to secure your spot months in advance to avoid the inevitable price spike as your travel dates get closer. But sometimes the best time to book a flight also depends on the destination and whether it's domestic or abroad. The trends are always changing, but experts say the sweet spot for booking domestic flights is 28 days, or 60 days for international flights.

Flights generally open for booking about a year ahead of time, and the airfare will change often between then and takeoff. Although you can book just a couple of weeks before the departure date in some cases, prices are likely to be astronomical. In other cases, when you want to go somewhere popular or during a big travel weekend, flights could fill up faster than normal. Our advice: Track flight prices on Google Flights or Hopper as early as possible so you can keep an eye on cost fluctuations. Read on for more advice about when to book flights from the pros.

According to Expedia's 2024 Air Travel Hacks report , you should aim to book 28 days before your domestic flight. "Doing so can save travelers up to 24 percent compared to those who wait until the last minute, from zero to six days out," Expedia travel expert Christie Hudson tells Travel + Leisure.

For domestic trips, pricing is elevated when tickets are first released, about a year before the flight. Those prices will slowly creep downward, all the way to their lowest point in the prime booking window, after which you'll likely see a huge increase in cost for last-minute travel.

Meet the Expert

Christie Hudson is a travel expert at top booking site Expedia.

You're better off booking earlier rather than later for international travel, but the Expedia report says ideally no more than four months before your desired departure date. The sweet spot is around 60 days. "This is a big change from 2022 data, which showed the cheapest fares were secured when travelers booked four to six months out." Hudson says. "2023 data revealed that people who booked that far in advance actually paid more on average." The report says the least expensive day of the week to book is Sunday and the most expensive is Friday, for both domestic and international travel.

But there is some regional variance. Going , a platform that tracks flight prices and notifies members of good deals, has found the best months to book flights to Africa, Asia, Oceania, Europe, and Latin America, for travel about 60 days out. Here's what it says.

Africa: Book in May.

Asia: Book in August or October, followed by April or September.

Oceania: Book in November, January, or July.

Europe: Book in August, October, or November.

Latin America: Book in October.

The real trick to finding good deals on international airfare is to avoid booking your travel for peak times, which include summer and major holidays (don't forget — that includes holidays in your destination, too).

Summer is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to travel, which means it can be tough to find a good deal on airfare. Ideally, you should book flights for summer travel as soon as possible, preferably at least six months in advance.

"The best time to book for peak season is … the opposite season," says Katy Nastro, travel expert at Going. "While most of us are scrambling to focus on our winter holiday plans, we should also keep our eyes open for some great summer fares."

She notes that the booking window for peak season ranges between three and seven months for domestic flights and four to 10 months for international trips. "And if you do book something, keep that flight alert on," says Nastro. "If it drops again, depending on your ticket type, you can call to rebook and get a refund or travel credit back with the difference."

Around the winter holidays is the priciest time to travel, Nastro says. "Your best bet is to remember the Goldilocks zones: look to book between three to seven months ahead for domestic travel and four to 10 months ahead for international travel."

Hudson advises that at the very latest, your holiday travel should be booked by mid-October. "But the biggest holiday travel savings actually come from choosing the right dates," she says. "Avoiding the busiest days like the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Friday and Saturday before Christmas will yield major savings."

Track flights and book your holiday tickets as soon as you find a decent deal, but make sure to book a fare that will give you a credit if you cancel (generally speaking, that means don't book basic economy). That way, if prices drop between the time of booking and your travel dates, you can cancel your original ticket and use the credit to book the cheaper fare. The only downside is you'll still have some remaining credit, but you can then use it to treat yourself to a future flight. Just don't let that credit expire.
