World Tourism Day 2022: Know history, significance and theme

The official celebration of World Tourism Day is going to be conducted in Bali, Indonesia. The theme of World Tourism Day for 2022 is ‘rethinking tourism’

World Tourism Day focuses on the promotion of tourism in various parts of the world. Started by the United Nations World Trade Organisation (UNWTO), the day is commemorated every year on 27 September.

This day has been celebrated since 1980. It marks the anniversary of adoption of UNWTO Statuses on 27 September, 1970. Tourism is something that not only gives us some time to relax and enjoy, but also exposes us to different cultures.

During this day, tourism boards of various countries promote tourism across their cities and states by launching attractive options. The theme of World Tourism Day for 2022 is ‘Rethinking Tourism’.

The initial commemoration of World Tourism Day focused on the promotion of tourism as a whole with a central theme. In 1997, UNWTO decided that the day would be celebrated in different host countries each year.

Significance:

World Tourism Day intends to raise awareness about the significance of tourism in affecting the social, political, economic and cultural values of the international community.

Celebration:

The official celebration of World Tourism Day is going to be held in Bali, Indonesia this year. It will highlight the shift towards tourism being recognised as an important pillar of development.

Some crucial facts about tourism in India:

Around $178 billion was contributed to the GDP of India by the travel and tourism industry in 2021.

Over 10 million foreign tourists visited India in 2017 which led to the foreign exchange earnings of nearly $27.31 billion.

Taj Mahal ranks number 1 out of the most visited monuments in India for both domestic and foreign tourists.

India’s domestic expenditure on tourism was nearly $186 billion in 2017. The collective government spending was around $2.61 billion on the tourism sector.

Kumbh Mela was the largest gathering of people in 2011 with around 75 million pilgrims. The crowd was so huge that it was visible from space.

India’s travel and tourism sector provided employment to nearly 80 million people in the financial year 2020. Overall, the sector accounted for around 15.3 percent of jobs.

In the financial year 2022, 66 percent was the estimated occupancy rate of hotels in India. It was a significant increase from over 34 percent in recent years.

BEIJING, May 2 -- Events marking May 19 China Tourism Day kicked off on May 1 with the theme of "Explore China, Enjoy a happy life," the Ministry of Culture and Tourism has said.

May 19 this year will be the 14th China Tourism Day. As planned, a series of activities will be held throughout this month, including themed daily, weekly, and monthly activities. On May 19, each provincial region will select a city as the main venue, carry out various promotional activities focusing on the theme of 2024, and introduce various cultural and tourism benefits for the public.

Six major cities will be selected to host cultural and tourism events during the themed weekly activities. In a relay format, these cities will sequentially organize countdown activities with the themes of "Eat, Stay, Travel, Shop, and Entertain," the ministry said.

During the themed monthly activities, there will be concentrated efforts to organize cultural and tourism benefits for the public, as well as carry out promotional activities for tourism.

Americans are likely to choose alternative travel destinations this year.

NICE, France--( BUSINESS WIRE )--On May 29, 2024, the "International Mountain Tourism Day (IMTD) 2024" Theme Events was successfully held in Nice, France. The participants gathered to discuss and interact around the events theme "Mutual Understanding among People through Mountain Tourism" and the forum theme "Mountain Tourism Destinations Responding to Climate Change."

Dominique de Villepin, Former Prime Ministers of France and Chairman of the International Mountain Tourism Alliance (IMTA); Christiane Amiel, Deputy Mayor of Nice; Dong Guangli, Consul Général de Chine à Marseille; Zhang Haomiao, Director of the Office du Tourisme de Chine; and Rudy Salles, President Delegate of the Office de Tourisme Métropolitain Nice Côte d'Azur, delivered speeches at the event. High-level segments were given by representatives of international organizations, including Qu Xing, Deputy Director-General of UNESCO; Harry Hwang, Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific of UN Tourism; and Peter Semone, Chairman of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA).

At the event, the Global Initiative of "Mutual Understanding among People through Mountain Tourism" was released. Fu Yingchun, Vice Chairman and Executive Secretary-General of IMTA, exchanged MOU with Aki Karihtala, President of the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA); Abdou Belgat, President of the World Association for Hospitality and Tourism Education and Training (AMFORHT); and Laurent Blondeel, Directeur General of SAS Maxi Event's FRANCE.

The supporting activities were also spectacular. In early May, the Sino-French Rope Team from IMTA successfully climbed the Mont Blanc, and the flags of IMTA, IMTD, and "Nihao! China" were displayed at Aiguille du Midi. The opening ceremony featured a flag handover for the IMTA and IMTD. The events also included the "Nice Night" Dinner and the Mountain Community & Art Exhibition.

The 2024 IMTD event was hosted by the IMTA and received strong support from various international organizations and institutions, including the UN Tourism, the Comité Régional du Tourisme CÔTE d'AZUR FRANCE, the Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF), PATA, the World Tourism Cities Federation (WTCF), AMFORHT, INWA, etc.

It can also play a role in accelerating the change to more sustainable consumption and production patterns and promoting the sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources, promoting local culture, improving the quality of life and the economic empowerment of women and young people, indigenous peoples and local communities and promoting rural development and better living conditions for rural populations, including small-holder and family farmers.

The use of sustainable and resilient tourism as a tool to foster sustained and inclusive economic growth, social development and financial inclusion, enables the formalization of the informal sector, the promotion of domestic resource mobilization and environmental protection and the eradication of poverty and hunger, including the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources and the promotion of investment and entrepreneurship in sustainable tourism.

Global Tourism Resilience Day (17 February), proclaimed by the General Assembly in resolution A/RES/77/269 , aims to emphasize the need to foster resilient tourism development to deal with shocks, taking into account the vulnerability of the tourism sector to emergencies. It is also a call for action for Member States to develop national strategies for rehabilitation after disruptions, including through private-public cooperation and the diversification of activities and products.

In February 2024, the General Assembly decided to proclaim 2027 the International Year of Sustainable and Resilient Tourism.

2024 Emancipation Day Celebration launched to rekindle unity among African descent

Accra, June 5, GNA – The Ghana Tourism Authority on Tuesday launched this year’s Emancipation Day Celebration to rekindle unity among African descent and build stronger communities.

The celebration, which is scheduled to commence from July 22 to August 1, 2024, would be on the theme: “Unity and Resilience; Building Stronger Communities for a Brighter Future.”

Mr Mark Okraku-Mantey, Deputy Minister of Tourism Arts and Culture (MoTAC), said the theme for this year’s celebration “reflects on our ancestors’ struggles and triumphs, drawing strength from their resilience as we strive to build stronger, more cohesive communities.”

He said the harsh reality of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade and its consequences could not be denied, adding that recrimination, suspicion, blame, and mutual distrust between the African Diaspora and those on the continent would only perpetuate the exploitation of the Blackman.

Mr Okraku-Mantey encouraged Africans, home and abroad, to acknowledge the importance of Emancipation Day to pay tribute to our forebearer of the struggle for freedom from bondage.

“I wish to state that those of us Africans at home and abroad must be encouraged to see the wisdom of the internationalization of the Emancipation Day celebration. Its acknowledgement is essential so we must all come together on August 1st each year to praise our great ancestors who featured prominently in the emancipation process,” he said.

He added that “they have paved the way for us with their gory spirit, determination, purpose, and meaning of Emancipation. Let us allow their blood, sweat, and tears to continue to inform our lives as we prepare to meet the challenges ahead.”

Mr Akwasi Agyeman, Chief Executive Officer of Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted the plans to refurbish tourist sites, to observe the courage, community, and culture of African ancestors and the diaspora.

“We are looking at the redevelopment of the various tourist sites for the Emancipation Day. Currently, we have work ongoing at the Salaga Slave Market and many more. We are basing this on the courage of our ancestors who fought relentlessly, we also want to celebrate the community of African diaspora, the culture of Africans,” he added.

Professor Esi Sutherland-Addy, Executive Director, PANAFEST Foundation, pleaded with traditional leaders to look within our culture and find things that would move us to understand that every time a festival is celebrated, it is important to acknowledge those who fought for our independence.”

She said there was a need for a deliberate effort to use social media to promote some of the past information about how Ghana became emancipated and those who contributed to the journey that has brought us this far.

“From today let us try to get back on track to do things that will grow us. It will not happen by itself, but we have to deliberately do it,” she added.

The launch was organised by the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) under the auspices of the Ministry of Tourism Arts and Culture (MoTAC) as well as the PANAFEST Foundation.

Photo Exhibition in Dhaka to mark International Mt. Everest Day

KATHMANDU: The Nepali Embassy in Dhaka, Bangladesh hosted a three-day ‘Photography Exhibition’ to observe International Mount Everest Day-2024.

The Exhibition is being organized by the Embassy under the theme of ‘Mountain Memories: Connecting Peaks and People’ at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy from 31 May to 2 June 2024.

Minister of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change of Bangladesh Saber Hossain Chowdhury, MP, Foreign Secretary (Senior Secretary) Masud Bin Momen, and Nepali Ambassador to Bangladesh Ghanshyam Bhandari jointly inaugurated the exhibition.

In his welcome remarks, Ambassador Bhandari stated that Mt. Everest Day was not only a reminder of the first historic ascent of the highest peak on earth but also an occasion to reflect on the importance of mountains and mountain ecology.

He stressed the urgent need to preserve and protect the entire Himalayan range from the onslaught of climate change.

This Exhibition is an attempt to bring Nepal’s mountains and natural landscape to Bangladeshi audience through photographs taken by both Nepali and Bangladeshi mountaineers, trekkers, and photographers, he said.

Chief Guest of the event MP Saber Hossain Chowdhury stated that Nepal was one of the favored destinations of Bangladeshi travelers and that mountains including Mt. Everest continued to have a special appeal among them.

Stating that mountains are at the frontline of the climate crisis, he emphasized the need to build regional and international partnerships to ensure the prominence of mountain agenda in global climate negotiations.

Special Guest Foreign Secretary (Senior Secretary) Masud Bin Momen highlighted the strong cultural and people-to-people contacts between Nepal and Bangladesh.

He also underlined the role of mountaineering and trekking in building strong connections and fostering a deeper appreciation of the adventurous spirit shared by the peoples of both countries.

Salahuddin Ahmed, Secretary of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy commended the Embassy’s initiative in celebrating Mt. Everest Day by organizing the ‘Photography Exhibition’.

The curator of the Exhibition Enam Ul-Haque highlighted the emerging trends of mountaineering and adventure tourism in Bangladesh.

He stated that each photograph included in the Exhibition would tell a distinct story of courage, determination, and resilience.

On the occasion, Mohmad Babar Ali, a Bangladeshi national who summitted Mt. Everest on 19 May 2024, was felicitated.

Tahmina Shaily, the wife of late Khaled Hossain who reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 2013, was also honored.

The Inauguration Ceremony was attended by over 300 guests, including Bangladesh government officials, ambassadors, high commissioners, scholars, mountaineers, trekkers, photographers, media persons, and people from all walks of life.

About 120 photographs by Bangladeshi and Nepali mountaineers, trekkers, and photographers are on display at the Exhibition, which is being organized with the support of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Bangla Mountaineering Trekking Club, according to a statement issued by the Embassy.

This iconic theme park ride is turning 60 — and it’s better than ever

A giant Kong gorilla is thundering towards me through the jungle as I feel a woosh of air in my left ear.

I turn to face the wrath of a Tyrannosaurus and as I do, I’m hit with dinosaur spittle. Luckily, my 3D sunglasses take the brunt of it.

There’s nothing seemingly to separate me from these thunderous forms, fighting and charging through the jungle while I sit in my open-window tour tram, which is physically shaken from side to side by each crushing footstep in the dinosaur dance unfolding around us.

It’s utterly mesmerising and as realistic as being sucked into Jurassic Park itself.

Terrifying? Not really. Because reality was suspended at the gateway to Universal Studios, Hollywood – where imaginations, as well as dinosaurs , run riot.

Universal are celebrating the 60 th anniversary of their cult Studio tram tours which started back in 1964, somewhat more sedately, as a way of selling cheap lunches.

In those days, as silent movie stars filmed their scenes, local entrepreneurs hit on the idea of launching tours for the public to watch them in action.

The tours proved so popular that sales of lunches shot up. Studio executives noticed the trend, and decided to make money by launching their own tours.

They designed the now-famous open-sided trams, and invited the public to come and watch movies being made.

How do I know all this history? Well, our affable guide called Bob (who went to film school in the 1980s) talks us around the tour, and delights us with the secrets behind the film sets we’re visiting.

We stop off at Wisteria Lane, where Desperate Housewives was filmed (a selfie dream!), and as we race from familiar house to famous house, we discover that whenever Bree Van de Kamp opened her door, it was never very wide. Why? Well behind her hallway is in fact a public toilet.

We drive slowly past the original Psycho House and – an anniversary special – we disembark at Bates’ motel, and see a very convincing Norman Bates walking from room to room.

The actor is a believable lookalike – and you don’t need to have seen the original 1960 Alfred Hitchcock classic to know this young man is deeply troubled.

Behind the motel, post for a selfie in the grip of a giant King Kong, or stick your head in the mouth of a shark. And that reminds me – Jaws.

We visit the set of the original film, and as we watch some animatronic divers meet a grisly end, a giant plastic shark rears up beside our tram while oil drums explode into flames behind it.

From a sudden flood cascading down the road to a car chase alongside the cast of Fast and Furious (incredibly realistic and guaranteed to have me sticking to 20 mph in future), there’s action, nostalgia and fun in every corner.

We visit the props unit – a giant warehouse – and see a pile of shoes for the newly released The Fall Guy, alongside furniture and lamps of every description, from every period of history.

And once you’re off the tram tour, there’s still more fun to be had. Dare to dive and swoop on the Harry Potter ride – as Harry and Ron race beside you on their broomsticks. Face the rollercoaster joy of The Mummy, jump in a cart for Bowser’s Challenge, and Augmented reality ride, beside Mario and his friends in their multi-coloured Super Nintendo World.

When we stop for lunch in the Moulin Rouge restaurant, we have time to admire the stunning backdrop of the Hollywood mountains behind us.

Characters such as Dracula and bizarrely, a New York cop, come up to enquire if our food is good and the answer is yes – the lunch buffet is utterly delicious.

A trip to the Hollywood sign

On our trip, we came face to face with not one – but TWO – famous Hollywood signs.

To celebrate the 60 th anniversary, Universal have built a scaled-down version of the most famous sign in the world. We also took a tour guide hike – through Bikes and Hikes LA – up the winding Hollywood mountainside paths, where we got close to the original sign, celebrating it’s 100 th birthday.

Our Californian guide explained that the sign originated as an advertising board, the brainchild of a real estate executive who couldn’t sell his newly-built homes in the area.

There’s the ghost of a doomed actress who is said to haunt the sign (our tour guide insists he did indeed witness a strange ghostly encounter one deserted evening as he made his way down the winding mountain path) and then there’s the fun of rattlesnake spotting (none on the day we visited) and Hollywood home spotting (several amazing mountainside mansions are even on Airbnb).

Meanwhile if you want momentoes of your visit, there’s a supply of themed 60 th anniversary merchandise ranging from t-shirts, backpacks, pillows and a popcorn bucket shaped as an iconic glamor tram.

The park is orderly, good natured and not too big that you can’t enjoy it in a day – although you’ll be tempted to do several rides again and again.
