Dry shampoo helps instantly refresh your strands, making it a must-have for travel–especially if you’re coming off of a long-haul flight . Fortunately, just a few spritzes of the hair staple is powerful enough to combat dirt, oil, sweat, and product buildup in a matter of seconds, meaning you can spend less of your precious vacation time washing, blowing, and styling hair.

The best dry shampoos can also eliminate the sometimes unpleasant odor that comes along with build-up and “promote[s] movement and a cleaner look,” says San Diego-based hairstylist Gina Rivera . L.A.–based hairstylist Bradley Leake also notes that a good dry shampoo pulls double duty by “lightly” volumizing the root while also absorbing excess oil to effectively eliminate greasy strands.

Put simply, “Dry shampoos are a necessity when traveling,” says Denver-based colorist and Aloxxi Creative Advisor Sam LaBella . “Changes in temperature and humidity can cause your scalp to overproduce natural oils, so having a travel-size dry shampoo in your bag is a lifesaver.”

To help narrow down your search, we asked stylists to recommend the best dry shampoos on the market. Ahead, our complete list of expert-approved (and TSA-friendly ) picks to pack on your next escape.

Best for oily hair

Rahua Voluminous Dry Shampoo is a favorite of New York City –based stylist and salon owner Nunzio Saviano for its plant-based ingredients—specifically clay and tapioca—that “add texture, absorb oil, and refresh the hair and scalp.” The clean, fresh scent is a bonus, especially after spending hours on a plane.

L.A.–based hairstylist Genevieve Garner loves Briogeo Scalp Revival Charcoal + Biotin Dry Shampoo for its 99 percent naturally derived, do-it-all formula. According to the stylist, it’s made with “charcoal to detoxify your scalp, witch hazel to balance out your oil production, and biotin to keep your stands strong.”

Image may contain: Bottle

Kerastase Mini Fresh Affair Refreshing Fine Fragrance Dry Shampoo is another favorite of Rivera’s. “This is a great product for those that are traveling or on the road as one application can last up to 24 hours,” she says. It’s also infused with vitamin E to support scalp and hair health.

Best for fine hair

Image may contain: Bottle, Shaker, Tin, Aluminium, Can, and Spray Can

Dull hair, begone! For voluminous tresses in a matter of seconds, Raven Hurtado, a stylist at Chicago’s Maxine Salon , recommends DryBar’s Mini Detox Dry Shampoo . Per the stylist, this versatile dry shampoo “works great on thin hair that needs a little extra volume.” Ingredient highlights include oil- and odor-absorbing rice powder and moisture-boosting golden root extract. Choose from three tantalizing scents: original (jasmine, sandalwood, and vanilla), lush (violet, sandalwood, and musk), and coconut colada (coconut water, lily of the valley, and coconut).

Best for thick hair

Spritz some R&Co Death Valley Dry Shampoo onto your roots for a quick boost of volume. Per Leake, this dry shampoo is “great for thicker hair as it’s strong enough to work wonders regardless of how heavy your hair is.” It’s also infused with nourishing ingredients like vitamin E and rice protein. The scent—which features notes of fig, bergamot, lotus, cedarwood, and tonka beans—adds a nice touch, too.

Best for color-treated hair

Image may contain: Bottle, and Cosmetics

According to Leake, the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo effectively removes dirt, oil, and sweat instead of simply masking it. The gentle yet effective formula makes it an excellent pick for colored and chemically treated hair. It’s also formulated with glycerin, which attracts moisture to the hair (so long, dry strands!).

Rivera recommends Pureology’s Mini Style + Protect Refresh & Go Dry Shampoo for its lightweight formula, which utilizes rice starch to absorb oil and buildup without drying or weighing down your strands. Per Rivera, it’s also “terrific for color-treated hair” since it features a slew of protective ingredients and a UV filter to prevent color from fading.

Best for dark hair

travel size dry shampoo near me

“For those that have darker hair color and find that most dry shampoos leave a white cast on your roots, this is the dry shampoo for you,” says Garner of Batiste’s Dry Shampoo in Divine Dark . Unlike traditional dry shampoos, this one offers a hint of pigment to seamlessly blend into dark hair—while simultaneously concealing gray or overgrown roots.

Best for sensitive scalps

Image may contain: Tin, Can, Bottle, and Shaker

According to Garner, the aptly named IGK Jet Lag Dry Shampoo is gentle enough “for even the most sensitive scalp.” The formula’s volcanic ash and ginger root extract are excellent for cleansing and softening, while vitamin-rich mango fruit extract adds extra nourishment.

According to Saviano, the Oribe Mini Gold Lust Dry Shampoo uses translucent powders that blend into the hair, which help extend your ‘do. It’s also enriched with rice silk, which, per the stylist, “leaves hair feeling soft and smooth.” Other highlights include antioxidant-rich bamboo, nourishing myrrh extract, and lavender and chamomile, both of which can help soothe itchy or irritated scalps. The stylist also praised the product’s long-lasting fragrance that “boosts its hair-refreshing benefits.”

The Best Travel-Size Dry Shampoos

If you know me, you know I love my dry shampoo to refresh my hair for a day or two to help it last longer in between washes. And when it comes to traveling, I tend to wash my hair even more often than I do at home especially if I’m doing a lot of outdoor activities. But sometimes having good travel-size dry shampoos when traveling does come in handy, especially for those days when I don’t have a lot of time at night and have to wake up early the next day. Not to mention, it’s also very useful after a long flight and you want to get rid of dirt and eliminate any unpleasant odors. And what I really like about dry shampoos is that they give my hair an extra volume boost that I very much need (here are  7 Ways To Instantly Fix A Bad Hair Day And Add Volume To Your Hair ).

I also find that having dry shampoos for traveling is a necessity as it can really manage the oils and grease in your hair as you encounter changes in climates and different environments. I’ve tried many different dry shampoos and have tested them all out to make sure that I can recommend the best dry shampoos that aren’t heavy, don’t leave a white residue, have a nice scent, add volume to the hair, and are travel-friendly. So here are the best dry shampoos for traveling that you’ll want to take with you for any trip.

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo

This is probably the strongest dry shampoo I’ve used as it instantly helps with absorbing oil, refreshing the hair, eliminating odor, and adding volume with its charcoal powder. It provides a deep, detoxifying cleanse to help your hair last a couple more ldays. You just need to leave it on for 30 seconds to let the powders activate and then massage it into your scalp.

This dry shampoo does absorb oil in the hair  very  well so you may feel a bit of a residue or slightly dry effect but if you distribute it evenly enough, it will be very natural on your hair. And I like he nice scent that it has.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo

Living Proof PhD Dry Shampoo

This was the first Living Proof Dry Shampoo I tried and I really liked the effectiveness of it. This award-winning travel-size dry shampoo is perfect for traveling as it helps with oil, sweat, and odor while adding body and texture. It also delivers a time-release scent which is fresh and light so it doesn’t bother me at all. I also like the minimal residue and that my hair is still quite flexible after using this. It is not as strong as the IGK First Class Dry Shampoo, but does a great job to revive and clean my hair.

Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo

Living Proof PhD Advanced Clean Dry Shampoo

After having a great experience with the original Living Proof Dry Shampoo, I knew I had to try the Advanced version. This dry shampoo is similar to the original one, but the advanced part of is that it makes your hair softer while adding shine so it looks like you’re fresh out of the shower. I found that this version is one of the best dry shampoos for traveling as well if you’re looking for a really clean outcome with less of a powder feel. It also balances sebum levels in your scalp and cleans like a rinse-out shampoo which makes your hair much more manageable and reinvigorated. This dry shampoo also allows you more time in between washes which can really help out when you’re traveling if you’re really lacking the time. As you may all know, if your hair is long like mine, it takes longer to wash and even longer to dry especially since hotel hair dryers are quite weak.

Both of the Living Proof Dry Shampoos are very effective and that’s why I shared them both, it’s just a matter of choosing what your needs or preferences are.

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo

If you’ve read my other hair-related blog posts, you’ll know that I love the scent of all the Amika products. This cult-favorite and prestige travel-size dry shampoo gives a freshly-washed look, adds volume, and leaves no white residue. It is also nutrient-rich and they used a natural rice starch to absorb excess oil and reduces odor. You’ll get voluminous hair brought back to life and it isn’t heavy on the hair. With this dry shampoo, your hair will look and feel revitalized for your travels!

Take Our Word for It

Real Simple / David Hattan

Washing your hair daily, even regularly, has been a topic of debate for quite some time. Whether you prefer to skip a few days or just don’t have the time to do a full wash, dry shampoo can come in handy to give you the refresh you need without getting your hair wet. This pretty-much-magic product is formulated to clean your strands by absorbing oil and odor while also adding volume and texture.

To find the best dry shampoos, we researched the highest-rated products while also evaluating their ingredients, formula, and scent. We also consulted Miwako Urasugi , Kyoto-raised and NYC-based hairstylist, for insight and tips on what to look for when shopping for the right dry shampoo for your hair type, texture, budget, and lifestyle.

Best Overall

Living proof perfect hair day dry shampoo.

It’s great for all hair types and oily scalps.

There is no unscented option.

It can be a challenge when it comes to finding a dry shampoo for all hair types, especially one that works. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo, on the other hand, is suitable for fine, straight to thick hair, coily hair—you name it. This dry shampoo is a must-have for absorbing odor, oil, and sweat to give your hair new life between washes. We especially like that it’s color safe and has a time-release scent so your hair can smell fresh all day. While it does not have a specific scent listed, it has a fresh fragrance that’s slightly floral.

We love the effectiveness of this shampoo and its versatility on different hair types—just note that it’s not available in an unscented version. You can get it in three sizes—mini, standard, and value—so you can just as easily pack this shampoo in your luggage or keep it in the cabinet of your bathroom vanity .

Formula: Spray | Size: 2.4, 5.5, and 9.9 ounces | Scent: Not listed

Best Budget

Kristin ess style reviving dry shampoo.

It smooths out split ends.

The spray nozzle can be hard to press.

For those who don’t want to splurge on dry shampoo, we recommend this one from Kristin Ess. It comes in standard and travel sizes, works for all hair colors from light to dark, and contains a proprietary strengthening complex that “zips up” split ends and smooths out their appearance. We also like how well it absorbs oil and eliminates odor to leave your hair feeling fresh.

Despite the spray nozzle that can be hard to press or disperse the product evenly, it’s not necessarily a defect for every bottle. The vegan and vitamin-enriched formula definitely make this dry shampoo worth more than its value, so it’s a great option for those who’ve never used dry shampoo or want to switch to something more budget-friendly.

Formula: Spray | Size: 1.2 and 4 ounces | Scent: Sandalwood, pear, magnolia

Klorane Non-Aerosol Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk

It’s eco-friendly and fully recyclable.

It may not be suitable for dark hair.

Dry shampoos typically come in three forms: spray or aerosol, powder, and foam. We love the Klorane Non-Aerosol Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk for its non-chemical and plant-based spray that’s still effective and easy to use. It’s made with oat milk to soothe and protect your hair and scalp as well as corn and rice starch that provide a cleansing action. Additionally, the bottle is fully recyclable, making this a truly eco-friendly choice.

This may not be the best option for dark hair due to the light colored powder. However, we do still think it’s worth a try regardless of your hair color and type for its high-quality ingredients.

Formula: Spray | Size: 1.7 ounce | Scent: Not listed

Best for Oily Scalps

Igk first class charcoal dry shampoo.

Charcoal powder does a standup job at absorbing oil and neutralizing odors.

It has a strong fragrance.

An oily scalp or oily roots are typically the first indications that it’s time to whip out your dry shampoo. If this is an issue you deal with, the IGK First Class Charcoal Detox Dry Shampoo uses charcoal powder to absorb excess oil and neutralize odors. We like that it contains white tea powder to soothe the scalp and relieve that itchiness that comes with unwashed hair, too.

Although the specific scent is not listed, we can describe it as a strong, peppery fragrance that may not be ideal for everyone. If you don’t mind a perfumed scent, have a naturally oily scalp, or want an efficient dry shampoo for post workouts, this is a great choice.

Formula: Aerosol | Size: 1, 2, and 6.31 ounces | Scent: Not listed

Best for Dark Hair

Moroccanoil dry shampoo for dark tones.

It doesn’t leave residue on dark hair.

Some ingredients can cause sensitivities.

Anyone with dark hair who has used dry shampoo has probably experienced a white cast or light residue that can be tough to thoroughly brush through. We like the Moroccanoil Dry Shampoo Dark Tones for its ultra-fine rich starches that work to absorb oil on dark hair. The argan oil-infused formula helps protect against UV damage, and we love the signature Moroccanoil scent of amber and floral notes.

If you prefer a plant-based dry shampoo, you may want to opt for another product since this contains a few ingredients that can cause sensitivities, including fragrance and alcohol. However, if those don’t bother you and you want a dry shampoo for medium to dark hair, we think it’s worth a try.

Formula: Spray | Size: 1.7 and 5.4 ounces | Scent: Signature Moroccanoil scent of amber and floral notes

Best for Fine Hair

Vegamour gro dry shampoo.

It adds volume to even the finest hair.

It’s expensive for the size.

Just like your favorite thickening shampoo , this formula from Vegamour GRO Dry Shampoo will give you the oomph you dream of. This dry shampoo is lightweight and contains clinically tested phytoactives that help add volume. We like the pleasant citrus scent and how well it absorbs oil, dirt, and sweat so your hair looks and smells fresh. It’s important to note that this particular dry shampoo is priced higher than others that contain more product, but if you have fine hair and have struggled to find the right dry shampoo for you, it’ll become a hair care staple.

Formula: Aerosol | Size: 1.8 and 3.95 ounces | Scent: Citrus

Best Volumizing

Amika perk up dry shampoo.

It adds volume and texture while refreshing your hair.

The nozzle can be finicky.

After going days without washing your hair , you may notice a loss of volume, especially at the root. A volumizing dry shampoo is a great way to refresh your hair while restoring body, and the Amika Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo does just that. We like that it works on all hair types, absorbs oil and odor, and is formulated with sea buckthorn to nourish and soothe your hair and scalp. It has an alluring scent combination of vanilla, clover, and citrus, too.

While we do wish the nozzle didn’t get stuck after spraying it a lot over time, the quality of this dry shampoo more than makes up for this setback. Whether you’re looking to give your hair extra volume between wash days for work or a date night, this dry shampoo will be your new best friend.

Formula: Spray | Size: 1.8, 5.3, and 7.3 ounces | Scent: Vanilla, clover, citrus

Best Texturizing

Batiste texturizing dry shampoo.

It creates soft beachy waves.

It may not be ideal for those without layers.

The classic beachy waves aren’t just a summer hairstyle. If you love to have this look all year round, we recommend Batiste Texturizing Dry Shampoo. Formulated with rice starch and sea kelp, this dry shampoo is effective at absorbing excess grease and oil while the pleasant citrus scent makes hair smell fresh. Best of all, it adds light volume and rich texture so you can give your curling iron a break when you want to style your hair between wash days.

Keep in mind that this dry shampoo might be best for those with layered haircuts, which makes it easier to bring out those sultry, tousled waves. However, we also think it’s worth a try for those with blunt cuts, bobs, or naturally straight hair.

Formula: Aerosol | Size: 3.81 ounces | Scent: Citrus

Best Drugstore

Dove volume and fullness dry shampoo.

It’s great at absorbing oil, and it doesn’t cost very much.

It doesn’t add much volume.

Dry shampoos are often found at salons and specialty hair care stores, but if you want something efficient that’s also inexpensive, we recommend the Dove Beauty Volume & Fullness Dry Shampoo. Although it doesn’t add as much volume as other dry shampoos, we appreciate the lightweight formula and how effective it is at absorbing oil and refreshing your hair without water.

Formula: Spray | Size: 1.15, 5, and 7.3 ounces | Scent: Not listed

Best Powder

Crown affair the dry shampoo.

It’s refillable and comes with a brush.

It’s more expensive than other powder dry shampoos.

For those looking for a high-end, refillable, and eco-friendly dry shampoo, we suggest this one. Unlike others that come in a can or bottle, this powder dry shampoo comes in a jar that includes a kabuki brush to dip in the powder and apply to your roots. The talc-free formula contains persimmon-derived tannic acid, which neutralizes odors, tsubaki seed oil to prevent scalp dryness and irritation, and tapioca starch, which absorbs excess oils. Our favorite feature about this dry shampoo, however, is that it’s refillable to reduce waste.

Despite the higher price tag, particularly in comparison to other powder dry shampoos, we think it’s more than worth it if you prioritize an eco-friendly formula and packaging, as well as high-quality ingredients to effectively refresh your hair when you need it.

Formula: Powder | Size: 1.1 ounces | Scent: Citrus

Best Lightweight

Eva nyc freshen up invisible dry shampoo.

It smells really good and won’t weigh your hair down.

You need to spray it from quite far.

Most dry shampoos are made with powder and starch-based ingredients that can feel quite heavy when applied, especially if you have thick or curly hair. We love the Eva NYC Freshen Up Invisible Dry Shampoo for its lightweight formula that efficiently absorbs excess oil and odors from different types of hair. Best of all, it has the Signature Eva NYC scent—top notes of freesia and plum, mid notes of white flowers, and base notes of amber, vanilla, and white musk—that’ll leave your hair smelling even better than it does on wash day.

While we appreciate that this dry shampoo does not leave a white cast most of the time, you do need to spray it from at least a foot away to ensure this. If you don’t mind this and prioritize lightweightedness in your dry shampoo formula, then this is the one for you.

Formula: Aerosol | Size: 7.3 fluid ounces | Scent: Signature Eva NYC

Best for Dry Hair

Batiste hydrating dry shampoo.

It adds hydration without drying hair out.

A lot of product may be required.

It may seem counterintuitive to use dry shampoo on dry hair, but the Batiste Hydrating Dry Shampoo is perfect for anyone who needs extra hydration for their hair without a wash. The formula refreshes hair without drying it out, which is typical of most dry shampoos as it absorbs oil and moisture. The spray formula is enriched with avocado extracts to provide hydration, and it’s lightweight and doesn’t leave a residue, so you don’t have to worry about dusting off your roots.

Depending on your hair type or how dry or dirty your hair is, you may need to spray a lot of product to get the desired results. However, we think this is the best option for anyone with dry hair who needs to clean and hydrate their hair without taking a full shower.

Formula: Aerosol | Size: 6.73 fluid ounces | Scent: Not listed

Our top pick is the Living Proof Perfect Hair Day (PhD) Dry Shampoo for its versatility on all hair types and textures, and its pleasant time-released scent. If you want something just as effective at a more budget-friendly price, we also recommend Kristin Ess Hair Style Reviving Dry Shampoo .

Ingredients.

When it comes to ingredients,Urasugi recommends researching dry shampoo ingredients before making your decision. Some dry shampoos can be plant-based, containing rice starch and plant extracts, while others contain irritating although effective chemicals such as alcohol, talc, and petroleum.

“Using a dry shampoo with high alcohol content, especially in spray form, can irritate sensitive skin,” she says. “Additionally, if you're concerned about scent, keep in mind that you'll be surrounded by the lingering fragrance after application, so it's best to choose one that you find pleasant or one that is unscented.”

Formula Type

Dry shampoos typically come in three forms: spray or aerosol, powder, and foam. While Urasugi recommends sprays, she says the best dry shampoo for you can depend on a few factors. If you have thick or coily hair, a dry shampoo foam might work best for you, but if you have thin or light-colored hair, a powder could be your best option.

“Although I do recommend products that don't contain a lot of alcohol, it mainly depends on the condition of your scalp and the quality of your hair,” she says.

Whether synthetic or natural, dry shampoos usually contain fragrance to contribute to the freshness of your hair when applying it. If you have sensitivities, Urasugi recommends choosing an unscented dry shampoo or one with a subtle scent like the Klorane Non-Aerosol Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk . Otherwise, she loves the Amika Perk Up Talc-Free Dry Shampoo for its pleasant scent, which is a combination of vanilla, clover, and citrus.

Questions You Might Ask

Is dry shampoo bad for your hair .

It’s all about moderation when it comes to dry shampoo . Too little may not give you the cleanse and refresh you’re looking for, while too much or using it too often can clog up your hair follicles. Urasugi recommends researching ingredients and choosing ones that are eco-friendly and safe for your scalp and hair type.

“Not all dry shampoos are problematic,” she says. “The key factor is whether the dry shampoo suits your scalp. Find one that you like and that works well for you, as the scalp is part of your skin and needs specific care.”

How often should you use dry shampoo?

Dry shampoos are not a product you should use daily, the same way you may not want to wash your hair everyday . It’s best to think of dry shampoo as a temporary quick fix instead of a replacement to regular hair washing.

“If you wash your hair thoroughly once a week, it's best to use dry shampoo every two or three days,” Urasugi says. “Using a large amount daily can damage the scalp and hair by causing a buildup of powder, so be sure to use the appropriate amount.”

When should you use dry shampoo?

Most people use dry shampoo when their hair is greasy, smelly, lacking volume, and a regular wash doesn’t quite fit into their schedule or routine. Urasugi says it’s most common to use after a workout or when you want your hair to look presentable and refreshed for work or a date.

“The frequency of dry shampoo use depends on your scalp's condition, but it's generally recommended to use it a few days after shampooing, when your hair feels oily or lacks volume due to sebum buildup on your scalp,” she says.

This article was written by L. Daniela Alvarez , a contributing writer for Real Simple with three years of experience writing about lifestyle content and product reviews. To compile this list, she spent hours researching dry shampoos and considering factors such as ingredients, formula type, and scent. She also received tips on how to shop for dry shampoos from Miwako Urasugi , Kyoto-raised and NYC-based hairstylist.

How I Chose the Best Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

To select the following dry shampoos, I, along with a team of PureWow editors and testers, tried nearly 30 different products over the course of several weeks. We all have fine hair in varying degrees of density. When testing, we evaluated each dry shampoo on the following criteria: efficacy, scent and ease of application. Additionally, I spoke with hairstylists Jennifer Korab and Sheila Guillermo about key ingredients and formulas to prioritize when shopping.

best dry shampoo for fine hair: fekkai clean stylers dry shampoo

1. FEKKAI Clean Stylers Sheer Dry Shampoo

What we like.

  • light citrus scent
  • adds a little volume boost

What We Don't Like

  • twist nozzle can be inconvenient

Of all the dry shampoos I tested, FEKKAI stood out for saving my two-day old hair, effortlessly absorbing oil, adding a volume boost and having a pleasant—but not overpowering—scent. It’s a gentle, refreshing citrus with staying power, but isn’t too cloying. For me, that’s a huge plus because aggressive scents give me nausea. The FEKKAI dry shampoo didn’t leave a heavy residue, even after spraying it multiple times over a couple days, though I did notice a *miniscule* change in my hair color from dark to a slighter brown. Otherwise, it felt like my normal hair with a volume bump, which is always much appreciated. My only (tiny) complaint is that the nozzle is a turn-to-lock situation, which is nice, but it’s slippery. If it rotates even a fraction away from the “on” position, it’s locked, so you really need to hold it in place.

  • Size: 1.7oz, 7.7oz
  • Scent: citrus florals
  • Ingredients: kaolin clay, apple extract, vitamin E, glycerin

best dry shampoo for fine hair: Olaplex No.4D Clean Volume Detox Dry Shampoo

2. Olaplex No.4 D Dry Shampoo

  • amazing scent
  • doesn’t dry out hair
  • some find the scent too strong

“I have combination hair—it’s oily and dry at the same time (lucky me), so lots of times with other dry shampoo products, I’m just adding to the problem by making my hair drier and greasier. What I really liked about Olaplex was 1: It gave my hair that clean feeling without drying it out more. And 2: The smell is intoxicating—in a good way. I want it in candle form next.” - PureWow executive editor Dara Katz

best dry shampoo for fine hair living proof perfect hair day

3. Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

  • doesn’t leave residue
  • deftly absorbs oil and leaves hair refreshed
  • scent is a little overpowering

Living Proof

“I love this dry shampoo and I’ve had a hard time finding one that works just as well. It’s easy to use and doesn’t leave any white residue. The smell is nice, but it’s a bit overpowering for me so that’s a downside. I wish it wasn’t so pricey because it’s very effective, but I’m not someone who cares much about their hair so it’s hard for me to justify spending over $30 on a hair product when I rather spend that on skincare or makeup. But, I guess it’s a testament to how good it is, because I keep buying it when I run out!” - PureWow director of special projects, branded content, Rachel Gulmi

  • Size: 2.4oz, 5.5oz, 9.9oz
  • Scent: citrus
  • Ingredients: rice starch

best dry shampoo for fine hair r and co bleu vapor

4.  R+Co Bleu Vapor Lotion

  • faster, more thorough application than powder
  • pleasant coconut scent

“I actually [really] liked the application of the R+Co Bleu Vapor Lotion. It’s creamy, so you rub a small amount between your hands then work it into your hair (almost like lathering in shampoo). This was faster and more thorough than using a spray or powder. As for the scent, it’s like fancy sunscreen—a little coconutty and musky. It’s strong upon application, though it dissipates quickly. [Personally, I enjoyed it, but] I could see the scent-averse disliking the strong fragrance.” - PureWow senior food editor Katherine Gillen

  • Scent: bergamot, lemon, driftwood
  • Ingredients: Blue Molecule Complex, colloidal oatmeal, radish root ferment

best dry shampoo for fine hair batiste original dry shampoo

5. Batiste Original Dry Shampoo

  • affordable
  • widely accessible
  • can revive even hopeless-looking strands
  • works best for light hair

“This is my go-to budget-friendly dry shampoo. It’s easy to find pretty much anywhere, so if I’m traveling and am in need of a quick refresh, it’s what I reach for. It really absorbs grease well—even oily, flattened roots that seem beyond hope—but it requires more careful application. I feel like it’s very easy to overdo it and wind up with white roots from the residue, so it’s definitely best for light hair (though they also have formulas specifically designed for darker hair). It gives a nice little boost of volume, and the scent is fresh, with citrus and lily notes.” - PureWow vice president of editorial Candace Davison

  • Size: 3.8oz, 7.6oz
  • Scent: bergamot, lily, rose
  • Ingredients: rice starch, hydrolyzed keratin

best dry shampoo for fine hair: beach waver second chance dry shampoo

Editor’s Pick for Best Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

6. beachwaver second chance.

  • light scent evokes a beachy getaway
  • amps volume for super-fine hair without weight it down
  • some buyers say the nozzle can be sticky

Beach Waver

“By far my favorite dry shampoo I’ve ever used. The rice-based formula doesn’t leave a powdery residue in my hair. I just spritz a little on my part and brush it in, and watch as my hair gets a little volume—without becoming matted or tangly, which normally happens with my baby fine hair—and the greasiness disappears. The light Brazilian Berry scent is sweet without overpowering, too; it’s beachy and lends to the laid-back, effortlessly undone vibe it gives my hair.” - PureWow vice president of editorial Candace Davison

  • Size: 5.4oz
  • Scent: Brazilian Berry

best dry shampoo for fine hair r and co death valley

Best Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair That Boosts Volume and Texture

7. r+co death valley dry shampoo.

  • lovely scent
  • adds volume and texture
  • great longevity, even with extensive outdoor activities
  • hair can feel dry

R+Co’s Death Valley dry shampoo offered the perfect balance of volume and texture while giving my hair the illusion of cleanliness. The residue was minimal after brushing it through my hair, but it definitely had staying power. I was impressed that even on day three, after being out in the sun all day, my hair still looked presentable. Death Valley does amp up the volume and texture, but subtly. I appreciated this because I often find texture sprays to be drying. While I still experienced that sensation to a small degree, it was much less crispy than other dry shampoos I tested.

  • Size: 6.3oz
  • Scent: bergamot, fig, lotus flower, cedarwood
  • Ingredients: rice protein, vitamin E, silica, vitamin B

best dry shampoo for fine hair verb

Best Powder Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

8. verb dry shampoo.

  • effective , even on days-old dirty hair
  • pleasant scent and feel
  • difficult to dispense

“I tried [the Verb dry shampoo] on three-day-old hair, right after back-to-back yoga and barre [classes]. It smelled pleasant, felt nice, and absorbed some oil. My only qualm is the application. I found it difficult to get an even application of the powder directly onto my hair, so I wound up squeezing it into my hands, [blasting my black tee] in the process. However, it was effective: I probably could have gotten another day out of my hair with this. I [found it was on] par with my favorite Prêt à Powder from Bumble & bumble.” - PureWow tester Anna Vitacco

  • Size: 1.6oz, 5oz
  • Scent: fruity
  • Ingredients: pomegranate extract, bilberry extract, rice starch

best dry shampoo for fine hair r and co badlands

Best Dry Shampoo Paste

9. r+co badlands dry shampoo paste.

After testing tons of aerosols, I was skeptical about the paste formula, but it worked surprisingly well. It was easy to apply and allows for a much more targeted application than a spray nozzle. I also appreciated that there was no residue at all. The major plus here is that R+Co Badlands is travel friendly because it’s basically solid. To use, you scoop a tiny, pea-sized amount onto your fingertips and rub to melt, before applying to scalp and tousling into your hair. It gave me an instant volume and texture boost, which was nice. I would say that, due to the application method, it might not be the most convenient if your hair strands tend to get oily, too, as it really just targets the scalp/roots. However, you could try distributing the product with a boar-bristle brush.

  • Size: 2.2oz
  • Scent: citrus, eucalyptus, amber
  • Ingredients: volcanic ash, coconut oil, zeolite, sunflower seed extract, argan oil

best dry shampoo for fine hair: IGK jet lag

Best Celeb-Approved Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

10. igk jet lag dry shampoo.

  • delicate floral scent
  • forceful spray
  • leaves hair feeling soft
  • can be a little gritty

“ Hailey Bieber is known to love IGK , and the brand’s Jet Lag Dry Shampoo didn’t disappoint. It was lightweight and left my hair feeling soft.] I appreciated that the strength of the spray is pretty forceful, as I sometimes feel like dry shampoos can get clogged in the nozzle or just don’t spray well from the get-go. [The scent] is light, floral-y and clean. [There aren’t any major cons, though I did find it just a tad gritty at times], and I don’t think it would be strong enough for a really greasy hair day. [However,] I liked that it didn’t leave a ton of residue.” - PureWow senior food editor Katherine Gillen

  • Scent: floral
  • Ingredients: volcanic ash, ginger root extract, mango extract

best dry shampoo for fine hair: bumble & bumble prét à powder

The Crowd-Favorite Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

11. bumble & bumble prêt à powder.

  • effectively absorbs oil, even on dense hair
  • refreshing scent
  • may overwhelm thin hair

Bumble & bumble

Several editors and testers mentioned Bumble & bumble’s Prêt à Powder as a reference point while testing other dry shampoos. Notably, a tester with fine but dense hair said it did an excellent job of absorbing excess oil more effectively than some aerosols she tried. The scent is a delicate combination of clementine, hyacinth and sandalwood, and the oat flour and tapioca starch in the formula leave you with refreshed strands while adding a bit of volume and texture.

  • Size: 0.5oz, 2oz
  • Scent: clementine, hyacinth, sandalwood
  • Ingredients: corn starch, tapioca starch, silica

best dry shampoo for fine hair: altesse studio boar bristle brush

Best Alternative to Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

12. altesse studio repair & shine boar bristle brush.

  • natural way to regulate sebum
  • stimulates scalp and promotes hair growth

Altesse Studio

While I enjoyed many of the dry shampoos on this list, I actually don’t like having tons of product in my hair. However, I have been trying to figure out how to extend the time between washes without looking like a total grease ball. Enter: Altesse Studio’s boar bristle brush. The magic of a boar bristle brush is that it deftly distributes the scalp’s natural oils through your hair. (It’s also great for working in products like said dry shampoo if you choose.) According to the brand’s founder, Julia Tissot-Gaillard, after three to five weeks of the 100-stroke method, excess sebum should be cleared, sebum production should be more balanced and you should be able to push your wash back by a day. While I haven’t been able to test the theory for a full five weeks, I did notice that my two- or three- day old hair looked a lot nicer brushed with boar bristles than it did with my regular nylon-bristle brush, and looked more intentionally glossy than greasy. This is what I’ll be doing from here on out. And yes, $320 is steep, but you can also look at it this way: That’s eight tubes of R+Co Bleu Vapor Lotion that you never have to buy again.

  • Ingredients: boar bristles (keratin fiber)

What to Consider When Buying Dry Shampoo for Fine Hair

If you’re a fine-haired person who also struggles with volume and texture, dry shampoo can be a great way to give you a little boost of both, making it appear fuller, Korab says. “Look for a lightweight, volumizing dry shampoo specifically formulated for fine hair. These dry shampoos contain ingredients that will add volume and lift without weighing your hair down.”

When shopping, choose products that work for your hair type, and throw a bottle of clarifying shampoo or scalp scrub into your basket, too.

“Dry shampoo is generally safe to use and can be a convenient way to extend the time between washes, but it is important to use it correctly, so it doesn’t cause buildup on scalp issues,” she adds. “I recommend using a clarifying shampoo or a scalp scrub periodically to help remove any buildup and thoroughly cleanse your scalp and hair.”

Regarding ingredients, Korab advises choosing gentle products that will absorb the excess oils. She prioritizes starch-based ingredients like rice or corn, as well as absorbent powders like silica and arrowroot. Things vitamin E and aloe vera will add a little hydration, but Guillermo says to tread lightly, as they can weigh down your hair. If you do use a dry shampoo with these ingredients, opt for a light mist. Additionally, if you have dark-colored hair, “[look] for dry shampoo that has cacao powder or charcoal powder, which won’t leave that annoying white residue you see with many dry shampoos,” she notes.

Finally, if you have color-treated hair, be sure to select a dry shampoo that won’t leave a residue and will help maintain vibrancy, Korab tells me. “I would look for tinted or clear dry shampoos, as well as color safe formulas and UV protectants.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Are dry shampoos good for fine hair.

“Dry shampoo can be used by all hair types and textures, but to maximize effectiveness, I recommend choosing the right product depending on your specific hair needs,” Korab says. “The use of dry shampoo can vary depending on your hair type and texture, lifestyle and personal preferences. [I’d advise] using dry shampoo in between washes, for a style refresh, after a workout and even before bed, once or twice a week.”

How to Use Dry Shampoo on Thin Hair?

The application process is the same, no matter your hair type. However, if you have low hair density, you might want to prioritize a dry shampoo with UV protection, as you have less hair to aid in blocking the sun from your head. (As PureWow beauty director Jenny Jin said in a recent issue of  Youngish , we should all be protecting our scalps from UV rays.)

To apply, Korab explains: “Divide your hair into sections to ensure even application. Spray lightly in short bursts six to eight inches away from your scalp to avoid over-application. Allow the dry shampoo to sit for two to five minutes. (This gives the product time to absorb the oils.) Massage or brush into your scalp, hair, and style as normal.”

What Dry Shampoo Is Good for Your Hair?

As Korab previously explained, you should shop for dry shampoo according to your hair needs. However, she does advise against certain ingredients like talc, parabens and sulfates, which can be irritating and exceptionally drying to the scalp and hair. Guillermo also cautions against too much alcohol as a main ingredient for similar reasons.

Strengthen and Restore Shampoo

Best Thickening Shampoo for Damaged Hair

Sheamoisture strengthen and restore shampoo.

“You should look for shampoos with ingredients (like biotin or caffeine) that help strengthen, moisturize, and balance your thinning hair,” says Rita Hazan , celebrity colorist. She explains that while thickening shampoos don't actually treat hair loss, they clean your hair follicles—eliminating any dirt, sweat, and buildup that can clog them. And that ultimately is what gives your hair a fuller, healthier look.

Meet the experts: Hardik Doshi M.D. , lead surgeon of hair restoration at Ample ; Rita Hazan , celebrity colorist and founder of Rita Hazan Salon ; Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D. , board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery; Sam Ellis M.D. , board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of California.

Once you find the right thickening shampoo for you, remember that it’s going to take time. “Give the shampoo a trial for six to eight weeks of use before forming your opinion—patience is key,” says Dr. Doshi. He recommends keeping an eye on shedding, hair growth patterns, and scalp health during this period and taking pictures, to help you keep track of your progress.

After talking to hair professionals and dermatologists and conducting thorough research, we put together the best thickening shampoos for thinning hair below.

This hair thickening shampoo from Kérastase is a top choice for thinning hair overall. It was even the winner in the Good Housekeeping Institute ’s test for thickening and volumizing shampoos.

Testers gave this shampoo the highest points for leaving their hair feeling clean and being lightweight. More importantly, it also received the highest marks for making hair strands feel thicker.

We like that the shampoo has hydrating hyaluronic acid and that it works for all hair types.

What a reviewer says: “I have been using it since it was released a few years ago and am very happy with it. My hair looks healthier and feels stronger, and I have noticeably less hairfall/breakage. It also provides visible volume while keeping my hair soft. I love this shampoo so much that I refuse to travel without it.”

  • Key ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, ceramides, gluco peptide
  • Size: 8.5 oz
  • Color safe: Yes

OGX Thick & Full + Biotin & Collagen Volumizing Shampoo

Not only is this shampoo an Amazon best-seller with rave reviews, it also comes highly recommended by Dr. Doshi. He likes that it’s packed with biotin and collagen, which he says are well known for promoting hair volume and overall health.

“It has wheat protein to strengthen your hair and reduce breakage,” Dr. Doshi says. “ The best part is that it’s free of sulfates and parabens, so it’s gentle on your hair, and it has a pleasant, slightly sweet fragrance.” He adds that while the shampoo is thick, it spreads through your hair smoothly.

What a reviewer says: “My hair has come back to life thanks to this shampoo. I love the smell and also how the shampoo lathers nicely and rinses out so easily. My hair now has a beautiful thickness that it has not had in so long. Easy to use and adds a bit more moisture.”

  • Key ingredients: Biotin, collagen
  • Size: 13 oz

This shampoo was praised by two doctors for its impressive ingredients. “This shampoo contains Virtue’s signature Alpha Keratin 60ku protein which has demonstrated an ability to increase the thickness of individual hair fibers and fortify hairs as they exit the scalp,” says Sam Ellis M.D. , a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist. “It cleanses the hair shaft and clears debris from follicle openings, creating an environment for healthy growth.”

Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D. , a board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, recommends this product because the alpha and gamma keratin proteins and additional ingredients help hydrate hair without weighing it down. “It works to thicken the hair while helping to repair and volumize,” Dr. Garshick says. And if you dye your hair, this pick is perfect for you as it’s color-safe and paraben-free.

What a reviewer says: “I have been using continuously for 1 year and can def say I have had less shedding and more growth. I like the smell and it leaves my hair shinning.”

  • Key ingredients: Keratin, peptides

In Good Housekeeping Institute ’s thickening shampoo test, this shampoo received the best ratings for not weighing hair down. Several testers found that the shampoo added a good amount of volume, with one noting that the volume lasted the whole day .

The shampoo is paraben-free and contains panthenol, which helps boost volume and help repair damage. It’s a gentle shampoo that can be used everyday, if desired. Just note that testers and several reviewers noticed it doesn’t lather well.

What a reviewer says: “This was my first time using this product and what a difference it has made in my hair. It’s a gentle shampoo and could easily be used daily. It doesn’t wear my hair down and the smell is great.”

  • Key ingredients: Panthenol, wheat-derived ingredients
  • Size: 16.9 oz

Nioxin is a haircare brand known for making formulas specifically for fine and thin hair. All of their shampoos are well loved for promoting hair health and making hair appear thicker.

The System 4 shampoo is formulated for thin hair that’s dry, damaged, and even colored. It’s a gentle shampoo that uses peppermint oil, green tea extract, and copper ferment to gently cleanse and prevent sebum buildup.

What a reviewer says: “I loved the feel of the peppermint oil on my scalp. My hair feels clean longer and I have noticed that it is softer, shinier, and even seems to have more bounce.”

  • Key ingredients: Peppermint oil, green tea extract, copper ferment
  • Size: 33.8 oz

Hair loss and thinning can be caused by unhealthy scalp conditions , such as dandruff, psoriasis, and fungal infections. Scratching a dry, itchy scalp can damage hair follicles, so it’s best to keep your scalp hydrated and healthy with dandruff-fighting products.

“This anti-fungal shampoo that contains ketoconazole, while typically used for dandruff treatment, may also help to promote hair growth and reduce hair loss ,” Dr. Garshick says. “For best results, it should be used at least two-to-three times per week.”

What a reviewer says: “I use this shampoo three to four times a week as recommended, with a great conditioner. Then I apply a leave-in hair/scalp moisturizer right after when my hair is still moist. When it dries off, I feel my hair thicker and stronger than ever.”

  • Key ingredients: 1% ketoconazole, nizoral

This Kenra Volumizing Shampoo performed well in Good Housekeeping Institute tests. It received high scores for leaving hair feeling clean and washing out easily.

One tester found that the shampoo made their hair look thicker and stayed looking voluminous for a full day. Another tester shared that they liked the scent and how easy it was to use the shampoo.

A couple of online reviewers said that they noticed their fine hair could hold a curl much better when using the shampoo.

What a reviewer says: “The shampoo really helps add volume to thin hair. It lasts a good while and is easy to rinse out. Helps my fine hair hold a curl much better than others I’ve tried.”

  • Key ingredients : Panthenol, sodium carbonate

Dr. Doshi says that the Nexxus Diametress Shampoo is his preferred choice for achieving voluminous hair. “Its protein-rich formula strengthens and adds fullness, effectively reduces static, and maintains a fresh scent with ginseng and flaxseed,” he says.

Dr. Doshi also share that the shampoo contains gentle cleansing agents and hydrating vitamin B5, which help lift hair from the roots, delivering volume without weighing it down. “This efficient shampoo requires only a small amount for fantastic results, making it a reliable choice for those seeking a fuller, fresher, and more vibrant appearance,” Dr. Doshi adds.

What a reviewer says: “I have very fine hair, and this shampoo helps add volume. I have used it for a long time and will continue to use it. You don’t need to use a lot and the scent is nice.”

  • Key ingredients: Green tea extract, vitamin B5, concentrated elastin protein

What a reviewer says: “After having my son, my hair fell out in chunks and felt like dry straw. This shampoo and conditioner is a game changer. My hair feels so much better and looks healthier. I bought the anti-frizz leave-in treatment too, and pairing all three make my hair look like I just went to the salon.”

The paraben-free and sulfate-free formula was specially designed for damaged and textured hair, and it gently cleanses while replenishing moisture back into your hair.

What a reviewer says: “This shampoo is affordable, deliciously vanilla-smelling and moisturizes magnificently. Even though I have thin, frizzy hair, this product volumizes and hydrates without weighing my hair down and making it greasy. I love it!”

How to choose the best shampoo for thinning hair

blue line

According to Dr. Doshi, you should try to find shampoos that are made for thinning hair, with cleansing ingredients and beneficial components such as biotin, saw palmetto, and amino acids. In addition, Hazan says you’ll want to look for these ingredients when considering different formulas:

✔️ Biotin: “Biotin helps scalp health, which is crucial for those with thinning hair,” Hazan says.

✔️ Rosemary oil: This is a botanical compound made from organic pea sprouts and stimulates hair growth, reducing hair shedding.

✔️ Anagain : Hazan says that anagain stimulates hair growth and has no added side effects, which is common for other hair growth products.

✔️ Aloe vera extract: “Aloe vera extract includes Vitamin A, C, and E, which help reduce damage and create healthy cells,” Hazan says.

Do shampoos for thinning hair actually work?

blue line

“It is important to note that hair thickening shampoos do not treat hair loss, but they can make your hair look fuller and healthier over time,” Hazan says. For hair thinning shampoos to work, Hazan says it is important to wash your hair with the formula regularly.

Dr. Doshi agrees. “Some shampoos contain ingredients such as minoxidil, ketoconazole, biotin, and saw palmetto that may help with hair growth and thickness when used consistently over time. However, the results tend to be moderate,” he says.

Dr. Doshi explains that in cases of prolonged hair loss especially if it’s caused by underlying issues—like hormonal imbalances or nutrient deficiencies—using shampoos alone may not be enough.

The effectiveness of hair products can be influenced by factors such as the quality of ingredients, personal characteristics like age and genetics, and overall health, Dr. Doshi explains. “However, many people have seen changes in their hair’s appearance with thickening shampoos, like reduced shedding.”

Are there certain ingredients I should avoid when choosing a shampoo for thinning hair?

Preservatives such as formaldehyde can cause a hormone imbalance, triggering hair loss, says Hazan. She adds that shampoos designed for dry and coarse hair are often heavier, so you’ll want to avoid them (unless you have dry and coarse thin hair).

Here are shampoo ingredients to avoid:

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) : According to Hazan, SLS can worsen hair loss. “SLS is what gives shampoo its rich lather, but it is known for stripping oils out of the hair. Stripping your hair of these oils breaks down proteins in the hair shaft that are necessary for hair health.”
  • Parabens: “Certain additives, like methylparaben and propylparaben have been associated with imbalances and could play a role in causing hair thinning for certain people. It’s typically advised to steer clear of them,” Dr. Doshi says.
  • Silicones: Silicone-based products, such as dimethicone, can offer short-term smoothing and shine benefits, Dr. Doshi explains. “However, they have the potential to accumulate on both the hair and scalp leading to heaviness, in the strands and potentially blocking follicles. Individuals experiencing thinning hair may consider limiting or avoiding ingredients that are silicone-based," he adds.
  • Sodium chlorid e : Hazan says that this is an ingredient used to thicken the hair products, irritating the scalp and causing itching, which promotes hair loss.
  • Alcohol: Dr. Doshi warns that you avoid using drying alcohols such as denat, propanol, and isopropyl alcohol as they can dry out your hair and scalp, causing them to become brittle and prone to breakage. “It’s best to steer clear of these ingredients especially when they’re present, in amounts,” he says.
  • Synthetic fragrances : “Fake fragrances may lead to scalp irritation and sensitivity, in people which could worsen hair thinning or loss,” Dr. Doshi says. He adds that it’s advisable to choose products that are either fragrance-free or naturally scented.

How we chose the best shampoos for thinning hair

For expert intel on thinning hair and the best shampoos to address it, we interviewed Hardik Doshi, M.D. , lead surgeon of hair restoration at Ample , Rita Hazan , celebrity colorist and founder of Rita Hazan Salon , Marisa Garshick, M.D., F.A.A.D. , board-certified dermatologist at Medical Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery, and Sam Ellis M.D. , board-certified cosmetic dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the University of California. We included their personal recommendations for shampoos for thinning hair.

Additionally, we referenced the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab ’s recommendations for thickening shampoos and included the Kérastase Densifique Densité Shampoo, Paul Mitchell Extra-Body Shampoo, and Kenra Volumizing Shampoo from their list. We also conducted our own research to choose our recommendations.

The best dandruff shampoos of 2024, according to dermatologists

Unlike your standard shampoo, these options have dandruff-fighting ingredients to control oils, yeast, itchiness and flaking, according to our experts.

Watching dandruff slowly fall from your   scalp  and onto your favorite top can spur a lot of emotions. For many, dandruff is a small but persistent common hair and   skin care concern . Thankfully, experts say, it’s easily treatable with a dandruff shampoo.

I spoke to dermatologists about what causes dandruff and how to shop for a   shampoo  that can help. I also gathered expert-recommended shampoos and highly rated options that align with our experts’ guidance for your consideration.

SKIP AHEAD The best dandruff shampoos | What is dandruff? |  What causes dandruff? | How to shop for dandruff shampoos

Selected. Our top picks

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

How I picked the best dandruff shampoos

If you’re looking to combat dandruff and its associated effects like itchiness and flakiness , dermatologists recommend considering the following factors:

  • Ingredients : The biggest difference between your standard shampoo and a dandruff shampoo is the ingredients. Look for dandruff-combatting ingredients, including salicylic acid , ketoconazole and selenium sulfide — all of which relieve common occurrences like flakes and itchiness. More on ingredients below .
  • Price : Dandruff shampoos can vary in price depending on ingredients, size and bundles. However, all of the products on our list cost less than $25.

The best dandruff shampoos in 2024.

Take care of your dandruff with one of these dermatologist-approved shampoos. But keep in mind, if an over-the-counter dandruff shampoo is not showing any improvement, consult with your dermatologist for a prescription shampoo.

Best overall dandruff shampoo: Nizoral

Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo.

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

If you’re looking for a shampoo that can relieve the flaking and itching associated with dandruff and is suitable for all hair types and textures, consider this one , which comes recommended by board-certified dermatologists Dr. Isabela Jones and Dr. Julie Jackson . This is the only over-the-counter option that has ketoconazole in it, which dermatologists say is the best anti-yeast medication, says Jones. (Yeast, specifically Malassezia yeast, is linked to dandruff, so controlling this is important to combat, prevent and target this skin and hair care issue, according to our experts.)

Key ingredient: Ketoconazole | Size: 7 fl oz | Scent: Fresh and clean

Best dandruff shampoo for sensitive scalps: Vanicream

Vanicream anti-dandruff shampoo.

Vanicream Anti-Dandruff Shampoo

If you have a sensitive scalp, consider this mild option from Vanicream . It targets itchiness, redness and flaking, and it hydrates the scalp with ingredients like panthenol and glycerin, according to the brand. This shampoo, which has a 4.5-star average rating from over 1,800 reviews on Amazon, is also free of common irritants, including dyes, parabens and sulfates.

Key ingredients: Pyrithione zinc | Size: 8 fl oz | Scent: Fragrance-free

With a 4.5-star average rating from over 1,000 reviews on Amazon, this dandruff shampoo is formulated specifically for wavy, curly and coily 4C hair . Not only does it help combat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis, but it’s also safe for those with dry and sensitive scalps, according to the brand. Reviewers say their scalp felt a sense of relief without any irritation and suggest using a moisturizing agent (like a conditioner or hair mask) if you worry about it drying out your hair.

Key ingredients: Pyrithione zinc | Size: 12 fl oz | Scent: Fragrance-free but has a natural tea tree scent

Best dandruff shampoo for color-treated hair: Jupiter

Jupiter balancing shampoo.

Jupiter Balancing Shampoo

The shampoo has a 4.7-star average rating from over 730 reviews at Jupiter.

Key ingredients: Pyrithione zinc | Size: 9.5 fl oz | Scent: Fragrance-free but has a natural mint, vanilla sage and lavender scent

Best drugstore dandruff shampoo: Head & Shoulders

Head and shoulders classic clean dandruff shampoo.

Head and Shoulders Classic Clean Dandruff Shampoo

This shampoo is an expert-recommended option because it lathers well, smells good and has zinc, a gentle ingredient that helps control the yeast that can contribute to dandruff, according to Jones. It will clean your hair and combat dryness, relieve irritation and itchiness, reduce visible flakes and redness, and control oil levels, according to the brand.

Key ingredients: Pyrithione zinc | Size: 12.5 fl oz | Scent: Fresh and clean

Best multipurpose dandruff shampoo: Kenkoderm

Kenkoderm psoriasis therapeutic shampoo.

Kenkoderm Psoriasis Therapeutic Shampoo

This shampoo not only helps tame psoriasis, but it also helps combat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis (a condition that can create itchy, flaking scales and rashes that develop on the scalp and other areas of the face, according to the according to the American Academy of Dermatology ). The neutral-smelling shampoo has a high percentage of salicylic acid (3%), which is great for removing flakes and oils that cause the yeast to grow, says Jones.

Key ingredients: Salicylic acid | Size: 4 fl oz | Scent: Fragrance-free

Best cooling dandruff shampoo: Selsun Blue

Selsun blue medicated antidandruff shampoo.

Selsun Blue Medicated Antidandruff Shampoo

Selsun Blue’s shampoo has selenium sulfide and menthol, the latter of which is a cooling ingredient that helps relieve mild itching, says Jones. The shampoo will also help combat and prevent flaking when used regularly (at least twice a week for approximately two minutes, according to the brand).

select How to find the best shampoo to help repair damaged hair

What is dandruff.

Dandruff, which falls under the skin condition seborrheic dermatitis, is flaking of the scalp skin. It can fall on a spectrum of mild and severe cases, according to the AAD . Dandruff causes white to yellow flaking or scales on the scalp. You’ll sometimes notice it more prominently along the hairline or behind the ears. Most people have no symptoms, but occasionally, there is mild itching. In the more severe cases of seborrheic dermatitis, you might even notice redness on the scalp, larger scaly plaques and more severe itching, says Jones.

What causes dandruff?

As with many conditions, dandruff may be multifactorial, meaning multiple causes are at play, says Jones. Here are a few factors dermatologists say can cause dandruff:

  • The presence of a yeast called Malassezia . This yeast, which is part of the normal flora on the skin, may cause inflammation in some people.
  • Excess sebum production. We know that during puberty, our bodies produce hormones that make our oil glands create larger amounts of sebum. This oil is a significant factor in causing dandruff, and Malassezia yeast likes to grow in this oil. Because of this, dandruff is more common in teens and those in their 20s and 30s. Dandruff may also decrease later in life as oil production decreases.
  • Genetics. Scientists are finding more genes related to our skin structure and immune system that make certain people more likely to develop dandruff.

How to shop for dandruff shampoos

When shopping for a shampoo to combat dandruff, our experts recommend keeping characteristics like ingredients and hair type in mind.

Ingredients

Look for active ingredients that help to combat yeast and are anti-inflammatory, such as pyrithione zinc, selenium sulfide, salicylic acid, ketoconazole or ciclopirox, says Jackson.

  • Ketoconazole is an anti-yeast ingredient that is found in both prescription and over-the-counter shampoos. This ingredient may be more gentle on your hair, especially if your hair is very brittle, says Jones.
  • Zinc , like ketoconazole, is another gentle ingredient to look out for. Zinc and other ingredients like selenium sulfide will help control the yeast that is involved with dandruff.
  • Salicylic acid is good at helping remove the oils that are contributing to dandruff and can help exfoliate the flakes away.
  • Coal tar is another ingredient found in anti-dandruff shampoos, which helps reduce flaking and inflammation.

There are also a few ingredients you’ll want to avoid, if possible. For example, many dandruff shampoos contain tea tree oil, which, in general, is great for combating seborrheic dermatitis. However, it is a common allergen, so if your scalp tends to be more sensitive, this ingredient might make your dandruff worse, according to Jackson. Also, since the yeast that causes dandruff likes to grow in oil, our experts advise against shampoos that have oils as the primary ingredient.

If you want to go the extra mile, consider shampoos for your specific hair type and texture , according to our experts. For example, if you have color-treated hair, shop for a color-safe option to remove dandruff while preserving your color. Also, depending on your hair type, make sure you are picking an appropriate conditioner for your strands to make sure you are counteracting any drying effects of your shampoo, according to Jones. “It’s a bit of a battle — we want to degrease the scalp but moisturize your hair,” says Jones. “As most know, we don’t want conditioner on your scalp, which will add oils that can worsen dandruff.”

Frequently asked questions

Dandruff can affect people regardless of their skin type, hair type and hair texture, according to our experts. Those with oily skin also tend to have an oily scalp, making them more likely to develop dandruff and acne around the hairline because the Malassezia yeast can contribute to both issues, says Jones.

Seborrheic dermatitis may be a lifelong condition for some, according to Jackson. However, there are certain periods where the condition may worsen. “I will see flares in a hot, humid environment, and I have even seen flares in susceptible individuals who have taken up activities such as hot yoga,” says Jackson. “However, other individuals will flare in the less sunny months.”

How often you use a dandruff shampoo will depend on the severity of your condition. If you suffer from a mild form of dandruff, consider incorporating this type of shampoo once or twice a week. In more severe cases, you might rotate two to three different anti-dandruff shampoos, but overuse may also lead to your hair strands drying out, says Jones.

There isn’t a specific amount you need to apply — just make sure you apply enough to cover the entire scalp, which will vary from person to person, says Jones. But be sure to use the balls of your fingers or a gentle scalp massager to work the shampoo into your scalp and let it sit for two to five minutes before rinsing, says Jones.

“You should see improvement after a week, and if you don’t, then you may need to see a dermatologist for prescription treatment,” says Jones.
