TAT strengthens “Visit Thailand Year 2023” towards a meaningful travel direction

A series of new concepts and enhanced efforts are introduced to continue the milestone achievement from the ‘visit thailand year 2022’ campaign..

Photo of TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 12 January, 2023 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is strengthening the ongoing “Visit Thailand Year: Amazing New Chapters” campaign towards a meaningful travel direction. Underlining the kingdom’s soft power foundations and experience-based tourism, key strategies include elevating supply and sustainable standards, and raising awareness among stakeholders about the importance of being hospitable hosts to all visitors.

TAT strengthens “Visit Thailand Year 2023” towards a meaningful travel direction

In its first year, the ‘Visit Thailand Year 2022’ campaign was at the forefront of the kingdom’s efforts to drive the Thai economy forward. Thailand welcomed 11.8 million international tourists and recorded 189 million domestic trips – a milestone achievement that reflected the successful restoration of the country’s tourism industry from the concerted efforts of all stakeholders.

With this tourism revival continuing to pick up momentum amid volatile global challenges, Thailand is aiming for 2.38 trillion Baht in overall tourism revenue in 2023 – representing a return to 80% of the pre-pandemic level seen in 2019.

TAT strengthens “Visit Thailand Year 2023” towards a meaningful travel direction

Mr. Yuthasak Supasorn, TAT Governor, said “The 2023 target is a result of a carefully planned strategy to continue the milestone achievement of 2022. The “Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters” campaign represents a commitment from TAT and all stakeholders in the public and private sectors, as well as the Thai people to maintain tourists’ confidence in Thailand as a preferred tourist destination.”

Through the “Visit Thailand Year 2023: Amazing New Chapters” campaign, TAT is placing emphasis on the promotion and development of high value and sustainable tourism in Thailand. This includes elevating the tourism supply (Shape Supply) with an aim to offer experience-based tourism, and leveraging the kingdom’s 5F soft-power foundations – Food, Film, Festival, Fight and Fashion – to offer meaningful travel experiences in Thailand.

“Amazing Thailand” branding

TAT will continue to communicate and strengthen the long-standing ‘Amazing Thailand’ branding in its global campaign. This will be accentuated by the “Amazing New Chapters” concept to promote Thai soft-power cultural values and inspire travellers from around the world to visit Thailand once again, and further reaffirm the kingdom’s well-established status as one of the world’s most popular holiday spots.

Meanwhile, it is introducing the new “Create Your Right Moment” concept in its domestic campaign to inspire domestic travellers to travel more within the country.

“Amazing 5F and More”

TAT is introducing the new “Amazing 5F and More” concept, aimed at delivering meaningful travel experiences in various aspects such as wellness, luxury, and Thainess. At the same time, it is placing focus on enhancing the quality of tourism products and services in order to drive the Thai tourism industry towards sustainable growth. Among key activities include the Good Host New Chapter Season 2 project, the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certification, and the 14 th Thailand Tourism Awards.

A series of events to highlight the kingdom’s 5F soft-power foundations – Food, Film, Festival, Fight and Fashion – will take place throughout the year.

  • Food – at least two events are planned: Amazing Thai Tastes during March-June and Bangkok International Food Festival in June.
  • Festival – events include Chinese New Year in January, Songkran Thai New Year in April, and Loi Krathong in November.
  • Film – the Amazing Film Festival Experience in August, while a Y series Meet & Greet event is being planned.
  • Fight – Amazing Muay Thai Festival in February.
  • Fashion – Valentine Fashion TV Beach Award Festival in February.

Policy and Planning

To drive tourism towards sustainability, TAT is adopting the BCG Model to highlight Gastronomy Tourism. By collecting and analysing data under ‘ From Policy Lab to Real Product’ strategy, TAT has come up with the Best Practice Model to showcase organic cuisine and to transform to inclusive business and smart organic farmer, which leads to generating income for the local community.

Technology and Innovation

Seeing ‘Digital as a Game Changer’ ,TAT leverages technology and innovation to add value and transform Thai tourism to Smart Tourism. It is tapping into Digital Asset holders via the TAT NFTs projects, promoting Thai tourism products and services with virtual arts and Metaverse. It introduces the ‘3I’ concept: Intelligence – using Big Data and building Digital Literacy for TAT employees, Innovation – developing new innovation and Travel Tech, and Investment – investing in digital transformation, such as Start-up, Venture Capital, Cloud funding, etc.

TAT is committed to developing its human resources to be ready to support and collaborate with the Thai tourism industry, while strengthening and improving its work processes through innovation and technology.

International Market

TAT is adopting the ‘Great Resumption Episode II’ strategy for short-haul markets. This include:

1)  China is back – Placing focus on tapping emerging segments and enhancing cooperation with the airlines to increase air access flights to cater to the increasing demands and promoting new modes of travelling, such as an overland border.

2) 7 Digits Target – Focusing on rapidly growing markets, such as China, Malaysia, India, and South Korea, as well as cooperating with partner agents and airlines.

3) Colour Your Life by Amazing Thailand – Seamlessly integrating the Amazing Thailand brand in the tourist’s slice of life through on-site and virtual marketing promotional events.

 4) Responsible Tourism – Supporting CSR and responsible tourism projects, such as Reborn the Nature to advocate tourism sustainability.

5) 2 Tier, Second to None – Encouraging visitors to visit the emerging destinations, while sourcing new tourist segments from secondary cities in South Korea, China, India, Vietnam, and Malaysia.

For long-haul markets, TAT is adopting the ‘A-B-C-D Fast Forward’ strategy.

A – Airline Focus to continue the collaboration with the leading airlines; such as, Qatar Airways, Etihad, and Oman Air to expand new routes and increase the frequency of direct flights.

B – Big Cities and Beyond to penetrate new markets in major and secondary cities; such as Bucharest in Romania, and Sofia in Bulgaria.

C – Collaboration is Key to work with new partners including airlines; such as, Delta Airlines, Air Canada, FlyDubai, and Aeroflot, and online travel agency; such as, Almosafer and SAGA Holidays.

D – Destination for All to promote Thailand as an “All-year round Destination” to meet the demand for visitors with regardless of seasons and with all segments including family, medical and wellness in the Middle East or the LGBTQ+ in Europe and America.

Domestic Market

TAT is placing focus on ‘Value over Volume’ under the new ‘Travel Thailand in Limited Edition’ concept highlighting the 5F Soft Powers to cater to the various needs of domestic travellers.

Various events are being planned for 2023 to inspire domestic travel, including Travel 365 days in Amazing Thailand, Vijit Thailand 2023, and Amazing Thailand Festival Experience 2023.

TAT is also continuing its efforts to encourage domestic travellers to visit emerging destinations during weekdays to expand the expenditure and balance the capacity of the destinations.

2023 Targets

TAT expects to welcome 25 million international tourists and inspire 250 million domestic trips in 2023. The target for overall tourism revenue is 2.38 trillion Baht comprising 670-880 billion Baht from domestic tourism and 1.5 trillion Baht from international tourism.

Bangkok’s new, yawn-inducing slogan

  • By Patrick Winn

bangkok tourism tagline

A cement chicken on a busy street in Bangkok, Thailand.

A city as dazzling, intoxicating and congenial as Bangkok deserves an inspiring slogan.

The Thai capital's newly unveiled motto, however, is more likely to make its residents drowsy.

A city's catchphrase should be punchy (The Big Apple) or evocative ("What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas") or perhaps elegant (Hong Kong's "The Pearl of the Orient").

Bangkok's new slogan?

"City of Angels, built by angels, central city of governance, brilliant temples and palaces, the capital of Thailand."

That's my translation of the motto, which was just unveiled by Bangkok's governor , the Thai-language outlet Khao Sod reports. I haven't seen an official English translation as of yet.

Perhaps you're assuming that, in Thai, this phrasing is graced with deft rhyming or alliterative touches. Not really. (Note that Thai people don't call their capital "Bangkok." They call it "Krung Thep," the city of angels.)

The slogan is both repetitive ("central city of governance" and "capital") as well as overly long.

Chosen via contest, the motto will soon grace 800 signs put up around the city, according to Bangkok's governor. Khao Sod reports that the slogan is intended for Bangkok locals, Thais across the country and foreign tourists. Part of the new motto's rationale is helping reinforce Bangkok's well-deserved "World's Best City" ranking from Travel & Leisure Magazine three years in a row.

Presumably, the city will offer a translation. So here's an unsolicited suggestion to Bangkok's city hall: instead of presenting the slogan to foreigners as is, consider taking out your red marker and reducing it to a simple and classy "City of Angels."

I suspect the phrasing "central city of governance" is unlikely to beckon tourists from afar or stir much sentiment among Thais at home.

Bangkok gets an official slogan after 230 years

bangkok tourism tagline

It’s official: 230 years after Bangkok was founded on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, the people have chosen a slogan that “best reflects the capital’s uniqueness.”

Some 125,000 people submitted entries in a Bangkok Metropolitan Administration-organized contest to create a slogan for the Thai capital and after narrowing the field down to five finalists, voters have chosen a winner, TANN reported.

So what is Bangkok in a nutshell? More than 42,000 votes declared, “As built by deities, the administrative center, dazzling palaces and temples, the capital of Thailand” best captures what the City of Angels has to offer.

The new slogan is to be used on special occasions such as the upcoming 230th anniversary of King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke’s decision to move the nation’s capital from Thonburi, on the opposite side of the Chao Phraya, to it’s present location.

At an award ceremony to be presided by Bangkok governor Sukhumband Paribatra, the winner will be given THB500,000 and a random voter selected by lucky draw will be given THB100,000.

Government reveals thailand’s 2022 tourism slogan.

bangkok tourism tagline

The Thai government has unveiled the new slogan that will be used to market the country to foreign tourists next year: “ Visit Thailand 2022, Now Even More Amazing Thailand Has It All ”. Thai PBS World reports that the slogan was revealed at an online meeting of the Centre for Economic Situation Administration yesterday. The meeting was chaired by PM Prayut Chan-o-cha and attendees also approved the creation of a tourism promotional fund for Phuket, as well as subsidies for small to medium businesses.

Officials have agreed that the tourism promotion fund will be supported by the private sector and civil sector. The fund will be used to promote Phuket tourism and to transform the island into a “world class” destination, by allowing for sustainable growth and reducing bureaucracy. At the same meeting, the CESA approved the halving of quarantine from 14 days to 7, as well as the resumption of flights from Russia to Phuket from the end of this month.

Thailand’s Announced Tourism Slogan For 2022

visit thailand 2022

Thailand has announced a tourism slogan to promote the country to international tourists next year:

“Visit Thailand 2022, Now Even More Amazing Thailand Has It All.”

PBS World reports that the tagline was revealed on September 30 at an online conference of the CCSA or Center for Economic Situation Administration. Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over the meeting, which also authorized the establishment of a tourism marketing fund for Phuket and incentives for medium and small businesses.

Officials have decided to support the tourist promotion fund with contributions from both the private and civil sectors. The fund will promote tourism in Phuket and turn the island into a “world-class” destination via less bureaucracy and sustainable growth. The CESA also authorized reducing the quarantine period from 14 to 7 days and the return of flights from Russia to Phuket beginning at the end of October.

Additionally, the Thai government authorized subsidized measures to help small and medium-sized businesses to retain their workers. From November through January 2022, each worker would get a subsidy worth 3,000 baht every month. Businesses must keep at least 95% of their staff and pay workers at minimum wage at least to be eligible for the subsidy. According to Thai PBS World, Thailand has about 480,000 SMEs with less than 200 employees each.

The 17 best things to do in Bangkok, from street food feasts to monastery magic

Bangkok is full of incredible experiences – here are our favorites © NeoPhoto / Getty Images

Bangkok is the Asian megacity incarnate. Its vast urban sprawl – home to 22% of the Thai population – is studded with gleaming golden wat (Buddhist monasteries), towering skyscrapers, teeming markets, multi-lane highways, and clusters of village-style houses that show just how far Bangkok has come over the last 50 years. Needless to say, there's a lot to see and do!

For travelers, Bangkok is a feast for the senses. The sense of taste is pushed to almost orgasmic levels by the lavish spices and complex flavors of Bangkok street food. The eyes are transported by the gleaming spires and rainbow mosaics of Bangkok's temples and monasteries, and the ears resonate with the roar of traffic, music and Buddhist chanting. Even the sense of smell gets a workout from the traffic fumes, incense , jasmine blossom and city pongs.

With so much to experience, you'll need to plan carefully to fit everything in. Whether you're here for the culture, the history, the food or the nightlife, here's our pick of the best things to do in Bangkok.

Feast on Bangkok's famous street food

Home to what could well be the world’s most vibrant street food culture, Bangkok offers travelers a mind-boggling variety of light bites and cheap meals, dished out on almost every street corner. From Thai-style fried noodles, dumplings in myriad flavors, platters of fiery curries and jasmine rice, meaty skewers sizzling on barbecues, fresh-cut tropical fruit or a vast array of deep-fried desserts, the choice of street food in Bangkok is endless.

Locals and visitors throng daily to the countless stalls and carts lining Bangkok’s roadsides, as sizzling woks perfume the city air with the scent of lemongrass, chili, kaffir lime leaves and galangal. In recent years, some of Bangkok’s boroughs have cracked down on informal food markets resulting in the closure of many stalls, but the collective street food movement still thrives and night markets start up across the city from around 5pm daily. Things are generally quieter on Mondays, though, when many stalls close for the day.

Young Asian woman walks with headphones along stalls and stands of Chatuchak market.

Browse thousands of stalls at Chatuchak Weekend Market

Possibly Asia’s biggest open-air marketplace, the vast Chatuchak Weekend Market – also known as JJ Market – is the ultimate shopping experience for those in the mood to burn some baht. Rows of pavilions, each housing hundreds of shops and stalls, are organized in neat sections beneath shady canopies, with each section dedicated to selling specific categories of merchandise.

Garments, shoes, kitchen essentials, glassware, handicrafts, antiques, healthcare products, home decor, foodstuffs, gardening supplies, even live pets – pretty much everything can be found here. Needless to say, you'll want to schedule the better part of a day to immerse yourself in this hugely popular experience. ATMs and moneychangers are on hand to fuel impulsive purchases.

As its name suggests, Chatuchak opens for business only on Saturdays and Sundays. On other days, the market is fairly deserted, except for the nearby JJ Mall that operates through the week. The BTS Skytrain serves nearby Mo Chit station, from where it’s a 500m walk (about a third of a mile).

The golden, giant reclining Buddha statue lays on its side at Wat Pho temple in Bangkok, Thailand.

Marvel at the graceful majesty of Wat Pho

Alongside a veritable forest of mosaic-covered stupas and prayer halls, the 16th-century shrine of Wat Pho is home to a magnificent 46m (151ft) sculpture of the Reclining Buddha – gracefully adorned with gold leaf and mother-of-pearl inlays – that commands pride of place as one of Bangkok’s most iconic sights. The monastery is also the spiritual home of Thai massage; treatments are offered daily, and Wat Pho has its own massage school.

Unsurprisingly, Wat Pho is visited by hundreds of people every day who come to marvel at its jaw-dropping main Buddha image, or pay their respects at the many shrines that dot the peaceful grounds of this sprawling complex. It's worth lingering to spend some meditative moments in the silent corridors and prayer halls before returning to the ceaseless din of the city.

Given Wat Pho’s religious significance, visitors should dress modestly to gain entry into the temple complex. A 200B entry fee is applicable for adults, and this includes a complimentary bottle of water (a welcome bonus on a hot day).

A dancer carries a dragon head on the crowded main street in Chinatown on the first day of the Lunar New Year in Bangkok

Soak up the buzzing atmosphere of Chinatown

A photographer’s muse, a foodie’s dream, a shopper’s paradise and a cultural anthropologist’s fantasy – that's Bangkok's Chinatown . Packed into one of Bangkok’s oldest boroughs, the district is a riotous supernova of smoke-spewing food carts, gold-laden jewelry stores, atmospheric temples, vibrant food markets and quaint family homes.

Walking down the area's main thoroughfare, Th Yaowarat, is a sensory overload. The nose tingles with aromas of burning incense, jasmine tea and burnt garlic oil, as the eyes feast on a colorful jamboree of flashy neon signage and rows of ornamental lanterns and streamers dangling above the streets. At any time of day or night, you'll find Chinatown bustling with a multitude of residents and visitors.

During the Chinese New Year celebrations in late January or early February, a carnival spirit sweeps through the entire district, with lively dragon and lion dances and sumptuous food galas adding a festive touch to the proceedings. While Chinatown is a fabulous budget dining destination, it’s worth noting that most street food vendors here only operate in the evening (and remain shut on Mondays). At other times, you'll have to find a sit-down restaurant.

The golden stupa of the Grand palace, Wat Phra Kaew shimmers against a blue sky in Bangkok, Thailand.

Admire the regal grandeur of Wat Phra Kaew & the Grand Palace

Spectacular and majestic, the royal complex made up of Wat Phra Kaew and the Grand Palace was established by former Thai kings as the nerve center of a capital city that soon expanded far beyond its original boundaries on the island of Ko Ratanakosin to become the modern-day Bangkok.

Consecrated in 1782, the sprawling complex – which formerly served as the official residence of the Thai monarchy – is home to a number of imposing palaces, reception halls, temples and courtyards, and is easily the city’s biggest tourist attraction. The best reason to come here, however, is to visit the adjacent Wat Phra Kaew temple, home to Thailand’s most sacred religious artifact, the Emerald Buddha – actually made from jade and dating back to the 12th or 13th century.

The walls of the corridors lining Wat Phra Kaew’s courtyard feature the famed Ramakian Murals, originally painted in the 18th century and featuring lavish scenes from the Ramakian (the Thai version of the Indian epic Ramayana). Recently restored, these murals represent some of the finest religious art to be seen anywhere in the country.

A white river cruise ships passes the stupa of Wat Arun in Bangkok under the soft glaze of an apricot-colored sunset

Take a sunset dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya River

Ranging in mood from subtly romantic to humorously tacky, a dinner cruise on the swirling waters of the Chao Phraya River can be one of the most enduring memories you'll take home from a visit to Bangkok.

Depending on your choice of vessel – options stretch from sophisticated teakwood boats with curated fine-dining facilities to hulking catamarans outfitted with flashy lights and loud onboard entertainment – you'll be treated to either an atmospheric candlelit dinner served up by a private chef or a raucous floating party with thumping music and a buffet to feed a few hundred guests. Either way, it’s worth an evening of your time, not least for the cool evening river breeze that blows away the discomfort of a hot Bangkok day.

These cruises are wildly popular with tourists, and boats – especially the top-end ones – tend to get booked out weeks in advance. It helps to reserve a table before you get to Bangkok to avoid disappointment. Most dinner cruises operate from the piers at the showy, antique-stuffed River City Mall , picking up passengers from around 7pm.

A Thai masseuse at work at Wat Po, Ko Ratanakosin in Bangkok, Thailand

Book in for a pummeling Thai massage

Blending ancient healing techniques and natural products aimed at holistically reviving the mind and body, Thai massage is one of Bangkok’s top experiences. The city has an unshakeable reputation as the massage capital of the world, and a vigorous kneading, particularly after a long day of sightseeing, can be heavenly.

Ranging from inexpensive foot massages at street-side parlors to the full pampering wellness package at chic spas, Thai massage comes in many therapeutic flavors. Some massages incorporate aromatherapy oils or herb presses, while others simply focus on a mix of pressure and stretching moves to relax muscles and increase blood flow.

Several well-known spa chains across Bangkok – Health Land , Divana Massage & Spa and Asia Herb Foundation to name just a few – offer high-quality massages at reasonable prices. However, they can get crowded (especially on weekends), so advance reservations are a wise move.

As seen from a vantage point, the stalls of Artbox Night Market in Bangkok glow with light as vendors sell their wares.

Graze through myriad Thai flavors at a night market

Bangkok’s legendary night markets offer a delightful combination of guilt-free holiday shopping, socializing with friends, boozy drinks served in buckets, and feasts of waistline-expanding Thai food at outdoor food stalls.

The legendary Talat Rot Fai Srinakharin night market in Northern Bangkok promises one of the city’s most satisfying after-dark experiences, while the fashionable Artbox on centrally located Th Sukhumvit draws young hipster crowds with arty creations, smooth jazz performances and an irreverently laid-back atmosphere.

In contrast, the more disreputable Patpong Night Market is a curious mix of souvenir stalls, food carts, massage spas, pubs with live music, and go-go bars peddling various forms of  "adult" entertainment. It's popular, but won't appeal to everyone.

But you'll find night market food stalls springing up all over the city from around 5pm most nights, including along the backpacker hub of Th Khao San (Khao San Rd). The underground MRT is a convenient way to get to Talat Rot Fai Srinakharin, while the BTS Skytrain can drop you near both Artbox and Patpong Night Market.

The ochre exterior of the Jim Thompson Museum is Bangkok. The wooden building is slightly hidden behind some trees.

Step into history at the Jim Thompson House

Jim Thompson, the American entrepreneur and silk mogul, used his traditional Thai-style home on the canal running between Banglamphu and Th Phetchaburi as a repository for age-old Thai treasures and art. When he vanished mysteriously in 1967, his teak-framed house was transformed into a captivating museum – and one that every visitor secretly wishes they lived in.

Why? The rooms are adorned with his exquisite art collection and personal possessions, including rare Chinese porcelain and priceless Burmese, Cambodian and Thai artifacts, set in a garden that's a miniature jungle of tropical plants and lotus ponds. You can also buy lush Jim Thompson silks on site.

Drinkers at the Bangkok Bar in Banglamphu enjoy their cold, golden lager beneath the golden glow of the low-slung lights of this bar near Khao San Road.

Feel the complex character of Banglamphu

Easily Bangkok’s most charming neighborhood, Banglamphu is the city’s former aristocratic enclave. Once filled with the riverside mansions of diplomats, dignitaries and minor royalty, the old quarter is today dominated by backpackers seeking R&R on famous Th Khao San, civil servants shuffling between offices and lunch spots, and bohemian artists and students bringing new life to antique shophouses.

Busy street food carts and classic Thai restaurants offer ample options for hungry travelers and the area also hosts some of the city’s best live music. By day and by night, the lanes of Banglamphu host eclectic street markets selling Thai souvenirs and trinkets, with bars that spill out into the street and pop-up cocktail stands that buzz until midnight, when the sale of alcohol is officially banned until the following day.

The Helix Quarter at Emquartier Shopping Mall in Thailand as seen from the top floor, with escalators, shops, and green interior plants for decoration all on view.

Throw yourself into a Bangkok shopping spree

Even those who vocally oppose consumerism may feel a moment of weakness in Bangkok. One minute they'll be touting the virtues of a life without material possessions, the next they'll be admiring the treasure troves of street merchandise and mapping out the route to the nearest night market to pack their bags with Thai silks, handicrafts and famous name fashions.

In this shopping-obsessed city, malls daisy-chain into an almost continuous shopping precinct, and the pavements in between the malls serve as a spillover retail space for vendors without a postal address. As well as top international brands, Bangkok is a long-established destination for bespoke tailoring, and has its own emerging fashion scene.

Start the retail adventure in megamalls such as Siam Paragon , centralwOrld , MBK Center and Emquartier . Post-shopping, pause for a cocktail at a rooftop bar with a city view – Red Sky , atop the Centara Grand at centralwOrld, Moon Bar atop the Banyan Tree in Sathorn, and Brewski at the Radisson Blu Plaza near Th Sukhumvit are all top choices.

A chartered long-tail boat on the Chao Phraya river, Bangkok

Ride the Chao Phraya River

Bangkok's most important waterway, Mae Nam Chao Phraya – the Chao Phraya River – is always teeming with activity. Hulking freighter boats trail behind dedicated tugs, river-crossing ferries skip across the wake, and children practice cannonballs into the muddy water that laps against the side of boat jetties and stilt houses.

You can witness soothing river vistas from the shore (ideally from Ko Ratanakosin or Thonburi), but it's more fun to get out on the water on a chartered long-tail boat or cruise along the river on the Chao Phraya Express Boat . Regardless of your vantage point, as the blinding sun slips below the horizon, briefly silhouetting the gleaming spires of temples and palaces against streaks of red and gold, Bangkok suddenly looks beautiful and serene.

Learn to make green curry at a Thai cookery school

Don't let a happy tummy be the only souvenir of a culinary visit to Thailand. Instead, spice up your life – and your future dinner-party menus – by learning to create the kingdom’s zesty dishes at a Thai cookery school.

Cooking schools in Bangkok range from formal affairs for amateur chefs to home cooking for the recipe-phobic. Everyone always has a grand time – visiting a wet market, fumbling with ingredients, tasting the fruits of their labor and trotting home with new cooking techniques.

Assorted vintage objects and furniture at Papaya Studio in Bangkok

Dive into the vintage universe of Papaya

What began as a personal antique-collecting hobby for the reticent owner of  Papaya has snowballed over the years into a mind-boggling collection of vintage 19th- and 20th-century objects that occupy every inch of a warehouse-size exhibition space off Th Lat Phrao in northern Bangkok.

Art-deco furniture, 1960s beer signage, superhero statues, Piaggio scooters, typewriters, movie projectors, love seats, TV sets, VHS players, wall clocks, storefront mannequins, lampshades – the list goes on and on. Many objects are technically for sale, but the owner prices them astronomically just to keep his collection from depleting, so treat it more as a museum of recent history.

Visitors sit and lie on the glass floor at the rooftop of the King Power Mahanakhon building in Bangkok as the lights of the city skyline, some way below, glitter.

Walk the SkyWalk at King Power Mahanakhon

Offering an unparalleled 360° view of the Bangkok cityscape, this two-tiered observation deck is perched atop King Power Mahanakhon , currently Thailand’s tallest building. Stepping onto the dizzying SkyWalk – a glass-floored balcony dangling 78 floors and 310m (1017ft) above the earth – is a hair-raising experience, but you can soothe your nerves afterward with a stiff sundowner at the open-air bar one flight up on the skyscraper's pinnacle. An indoor 74th-floor observatory offers a less vertiginous experience, for a cheaper entry fee.

A fighter celebrates after a fight at Rajadamnern Stadium, Bangkok

Cheer on the fighters at a Thai boxing match

Almost anything goes in the quintessentially Thai martial art of moo·ay tai (also spelled Muay Thai) – more commonly known outside Thailand as Thai boxing or kickboxing. If you don’t mind the full-contact physicality, a Thai-boxing match is well worth attending for the pure spectacle, the wild musical accompaniment, the ceremonial beginning of each match, and the frenzied betting.

The best of the best compete at Bangkok’s two boxing stadiums. Built on royal land at the end of WWII, the art-deco-style Rajadamnern Stadium is the city's original stadium, and it has a relatively formal atmosphere. The other main fighting stage, Lumpinee Boxing Stadium , has moved from its eponymous 'hood to a modern home north of Bangkok. Admission fees vary according to seating; we recommend sitting in the 2nd- or 3rd-class seats for maximum fan atmosphere.

People, captured with blurred motion, walk at night along Khao San Road in Bangkok. This area is very popular with backpackers and other travelers.

Plunge into the backpacker mayhem on Th Khao San

Th Khao San, better known as Khao San Road, is genuinely unlike anywhere else on earth. It’s an international clearing house of independent travelers either entering the liberated state of traveling in Southeast Asia or pausing for one last party before returning to the comfortable normality of "real life" back home. Its uniqueness is probably best illustrated by a question: apart from airports, where else could you share every inch of space with the citizens of dozens of countries at the same time?

Strolling down this market-stall-crowded thoroughfare, you'll see everyone from first-time backpackers scoffing banana pancakes to 75-year-old grandparents sipping G&Ts, and everyone in between, including hippies, hipsters, nerds, glamazons, package tourists, global nomads, weekend trippers, gap-year explorers and other travelers of every color and creed.

Th Khao San is perhaps the most high-profile product of the age of independent travel, but the bedbug-infested guesthouses of old have been replaced by boutique hotels, and downmarket TV bars showing pirated movies have been transformed into hip design bars thronged by flashpackers in designer threads. No visit to Bangkok would be complete without a wander along this famed street.

Thailand Travel Quotes

Thailand

Thailand was never a European colony, so even though the city is very Western on the surface, deep down it’s very Asian. It’s quite enigmatic, and I like that. I can’t get to the bottom of Bangkok, and I never will. -Lawrence Osborne

Bangkok, though, is a rejuvenating tonic; the people seem to have found the magic elixir. Life, a visitor feels, has not been wasted on the Thais. – Bernard Kalb

Thailand was built on compassion. -Bhumibol Adulyadej

Thailand stands at a crossroads. -Thaksin Shinawatra

The fact that television and tourism have made the whole world accessible has created the illusion that we enjoy intimate knowledge of other places when we barely scratch their surface. For the vast majority, the knowledge of Thailand or Sri Lanka acquired through tourism consists of little more than the whereabouts of the beach. -Martin Jacques

Thailand

I wanted to see Thailand. So I went. And I had a good time. -F. Murray Abraham

Once I decided to move to Thailand, it changed all my life and my personality. -Jasmine Jazz

Some of the streets are, however, genuinely narrow. These same streets may not be filled with machine-g** fire and the dramatic screech of violins, but they overflow with the invisible and innumerable longings of the human heart. Love continues to minister here, but betrayal still wears its perfidious face, hatred hollows out the weak man’s breast, revenge pursues its self-defeating course; and the unfulfilled dreams of the multitude haunt the island like so many hungry ghosts. – John Dolan

There is a life before and after the voyage, there is a life before and after Thailand. -Gregg Bkk

Meandering cows, tenacious bicyclers, belching taxis, rickshaws, fearless pedestrians, and the occasional mobile ‘cigarette and sweets’ stand all fought our taxi for room on the narrow two-lane road turned local byway. – Jennifer S. Alderson

Thailand

The first I heard of the beach was in Bangkok, on the Ko Sanh Road. -Alex Garland

The crystal-clear water in Thailand offers the best swimming and snorkeling experience. -Demi-Leigh Nel-Peters

As soon as she’d met him at the arrivals gate on his return from Thailand, lithe and brown and shaven-headed, she knew that there was no chance of a relationship between them. Too much had happened to him, too little had happened to her. -David Nicholls

I love Samui in the wee small hours. I especially love it on nights like this when the white moon stares down from the blackness like the pockmarked eye of a blind god. At such times, when the island’s bright signs have paled to grey and the broom of sleep has swept the revelers to their beds, my mind’s cynical crust cracks open a little, and some fanciful poetry leaks in. Then the dark hills appear to me as slumbering prehistoric leviathans, the clouds assume the air of restless ghosts and the moon-dusted sea murmurs in some long-forgotten tongue of the divine. -John Dolan

No need for Jesus and the Lord Buddha to fight. – Carol Hollinger

A man in Thailand was arrested with more than 10,000 pairs of stolen underwear. Legal experts are expecting a brief trial. -Jimmy Fallon

Everyone’s so nice in Thailand, and it’s a beautiful place – the temples, the culture. But everyone’s so nice that it’s almost inefficient. -Scot Armstrong

The craziest place I ever had s** was on a plane. I was on my way to Thailand. We got stuck in the bathroom and the stewardess wasn’t too impressed! -Anika Shay

Quotes about Thai Food

Thailand

Bangkok is also safe. If you see anybody wearing camouflage holding a machete, don’t be scared. They sell coconuts. -Bobby Lee

I landed in 1980 in Bangkok, and I stopped to eat ten times between the airport and the hotel. It was all lemongrass and ginger and chilies. -Jean-Georges Vongerichten

I know I’m back in Thailand…Not just Thailand, but Northern Thailand. Once known as the kingdom of a million rice fields, it’s a fertile, green, and gorgeous area, home of the ancient Latta people. Welcome to Chiang Mai Province, tucked up near the borders of Burma, China, Laos, India not too far away. All of them have left their mark on the food. -Anthony Bourdain

Food is almost certainly the best way to learn about Thailand. I was both overwhelmed by and obsessed with Thailand’s cuisine, but I also found food a way to improve my language skills, meet people, and learn about the culture. -Austin Bush

OH MY GOD! In Thailand, they’ve got the spiciest food I’ve ever had in my life! -Nick Carter

I love the food in Thailand because of the exotic spices they use. Their style of cooking is unique to their culture and always amazing. -Venus Williams

The first thing I do whenever I go to Thailand is seek out the closest restaurant or stall selling mango-and-sticky rice: it’s a little hillock of glutinous rice drenched in lashings of coconut milk and served with fresh mango. -Hanya Yanagihara

I can cook because my life depended on it when I lived in Thailand. Either I learnt cooking, or I learnt how it felt to starve. I chose cooking. -Akshay Kumar

The notion that before you even set out to go to Thailand, you say, ‘I’m not interested,’ or you’re unwilling to try things that people take so personally and are so proud of and so generous with, I don’t understand that, and I think it’s rude. You’re at Grandma’s house, you eat what Grandma serves you. -Anthony Bourdain

I have smuggled so many ingredients across so many borders, like shallot confit from Thailand. -Blake Lively

If Thailand is one of the best countries to eat in, in Chiang Mai it’s a particularly good city to find yourself hungry. – Anthony Bourdain

5 Things to Pack for Your Trip to Thailand

Canada - Toronto -Luggage

The   Lonely Planet Thailand guidebook for your trip. I used a Kindle version during my time in Thailand. It’s hard to find guidebooks once you’re actually on the ground.

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS, and general travel genie.

A Camera  since Thailand is super photogenic. I use a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my   Samsung8  smartphone these days.

A Full-Sized Travel Towel   for anyone taking advantage of Thailand’s beaches (or…hostels…). This is the  best travel towel in the world , and you’ll need it if you are staying in hostels or anywhere that requires you to bring your towel.

A Great Day Bag   so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc). My current favorite is the  Pacsafe Citysafe , which is especially great for Bangkok because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets. It also transitions to a night bag more easily and won’t embarrass you if you go to dinner directly after sightseeing all day.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Before you leave for Thailand make sure you have a valid  Travel  Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’ll be hanging out in cities like X where tourists can easily become the targets of pickpockets.

I have been a paying customer of  World Nomads  for travel insurance for three years, and I happily recommend them.  If you get sick, injured, or have your stuff stolen, you’ll be happy to have the ability to pay for your medical bills or replace what’s stolen or broken.

Well, it's only a slogan after all

Roger Crutchley

PUBLISHED : 24 May 2020 at 04:00

NEWSPAPER SECTION: News

WRITER: Roger Crutchley

The Tourism Authority of Thailand has decreed that the "Amazing Thailand" slogan will need rebranding once the coronavirus situation is sorted out. So from October, we will be treated to "Amazing Trusted Thailand", emphasising safety and aimed at "high-end" tourists. Well-intentioned as it may be, this new slogan doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and the middle word may prompt a few wry smiles.

Now and again the tourism authorities introduce an additional tagline to the original Amazing Thailand slogan that was introduced two decades ago. Back in 2011, they came up with "Miracle Thailand" which suggested some kind of divine intervention had been called upon and admittedly it would have come in quite handy at that time when things were on the dodgy side.

Then in 2015, we had "Discover Thainess'' which prompted a lot of letters to the editor and some lively dinner party discussions on what exactly is this mysterious thing called Thainess. Three years later, we were treated to the cool-sounding "Open to the New Shades" which was widely praised even though no one really knew what it meant.

They shouldn't mess around with the slogans too much and frankly, it's hard to beat the original "Amazing Thailand". The handy thing is that you can interpret it in any manner you wish. In this kingdom, things can be amazingly confusing, amazingly absurd or even amazingly amazing. I am pleased to say it is rarely amazingly dull. Thailand can happily carry on simply being amazing and let's leave it to the tourists to make up their own slogans about the place.

The new normal

Due to some spectacularly poor planning on my behalf, for two days running last week, I experienced long trips in taxis across the city. It was a bit of a strange feeling in that I was almost glad to experience traffic jams again. It meant that life is slowly getting back to normal, whatever that might be.

A word of praise is for all those Thai workers who have been entrusted with the unenviable task of taking our temperatures at malls, supermarkets and offices. Most of them are doing it with a cheerful disposition, even when dealing with grumpy specimens like myself. I like to think there is a smile behind their masks, although more likely it's a yawn and maybe even an occasional scowl.

I've got an uneasy feeling I'm going to find the "opening up" of Bangkok considerably more demanding than the "closing down". It's partly because I'm not entirely sure what you can and cannot do. There seem to be certain inconsistencies, especially when it comes to social distancing. I am intrigued by how they enforce social distancing in the narrow alleys of Chatuchak Market, while a couple of tourists bathing in the sea on an otherwise deserted beach in Pattaya are arrested for mingling.

Archery etiquette

My thanks to Ian Vincent in Muscat for taking me to task for using the wrong term in the item last week concerning Robin Hood. As he pointed out, arrows are never "fired" but "loosed, shot or released". No wonder I was so hopeless in my youthful attempts all those years ago to match Robin of Loxley -- I had been "firing" the arrows when I should have been "releasing" them. Never mind, it's still a great opening sequence in that TV series considering it was shot back in 1955 when no one had heard of "special effects". I will always love that delicious "twang" sound when the arrow hits the tree.

Apologies are for the misspelling of aujourd'hui , one of the few bits of French vocab I thought I had mastered. French words are henceforth banned from this column. I have enough problems with English as it is.

Flight of fancy

Whatever one's opinion of Thai Airways International (THAI), it is still a bit sad to see the national airline end up in the bankruptcy courts, although many would argue this should have happened long ago. Like Charles Dickens' character Mr Micawber who found himself in similar financial difficulties in David Copperfield , the airline will no doubt be hoping that "something will turn up".

I used to have a soft spot for the airline because I first arrived in Thailand aboard a THAI flight from Calcutta (Kolkata) in April 1969. In those days, it was regarded as one of the best airlines in the region and a very pleasant flight it was too, even on an ageing Caravelle jet. Mind you, after having spent the previous three months travelling overland on a clapped out bus tackling blizzards, seriously hot deserts, unfriendly camels, dire accommodation and getting sick as a dog in Kabul, anything halfway decent felt like unashamed luxury. A glass of wine served with a perfect Thai smile on that flight fitted the bill perfectly. The second glass tasted even better.

Getting Nowhere fast

If for some bizarre reason you would like to learn more about that overland journey and my early days in Thailand, or you are really desperate for reading matter, you can always purchase The Long Winding Road To Nakhon Nowhere currently gathering dust at Asia Books, Amazon.com and [email protected]. If self- isolation hasn't already driven you round the bend, this book will probably do the trick.

Happy reading and stay safe.

Thailand’s new tourism promotional slogan for next year unveiled

  • Facebook SHARE

The Thai government plans to promote tourism next year under the new slogan “Visit Thailand 2022, Now Even More Amazing Thailand Has It All”, together with investments as well as the setting up of a tourism promotional fund to transform Phuket into a world class destination.

The ambitious plan for Phuket and the tourism sector was approved during an online meeting today (Thursday) of the Centre for Economic Situation Administration, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

A tourism promotion fund, with the support of the private sector and civil society, will be set up, not just to promote tourism but also to effect changes in the tourism industry for sustainable growth, as well as reducing as much red tape as possible to promote tourism.

According to the NESDC, various lockdown restrictions have been eased to make travel easier, such as the shortening quarantine from 14 to 7 days, issuance of visa on arrival and the granting of permission for Russian passenger aircraft to land in Phuket.

Regarding subsidies to help Thai SMEs to retain their work force, each employee will receive a subsidy of 3,000 baht a month for three months, from November until January next year, to encourage them not to leave their work places.

The number of employees eligible to receive the subsidy will be based on the employment lists of workers joining the social security scheme, but the employers will be required to keep their work force at no less than 95% to be eligible for the subsidy and they must pay their workers no less than the minimum wage.

There are about 480,000 SMEs across Thailand which have fewer than 200 employees each, with a total work force of about five million.

HOW THAILAND’S “AMAZING NEW CHAPTERS?” CAMPAIGN IS SET TO BOOST TOURISM SECTOR IN 2023

Yuthasak supasorn, the governor of the tourism authority of thailand (tat), has revealed the meaning of the organisation’s new tagline “meaningful travel”, which he hopes will play a significant role in the kingdom’s tourism evolution..

For TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn, Thailand tourism year 2023 under the marketing campaign “Amazing New Chapters” is to promote “meaningful travel” to extend tourism activities all across the Kingdom and on a year-round basis.

Underlining the kingdom’s soft power foundations and experience-based tourism, the Tourism Authority of Thailand ‘s key strategies include elevating supply and sustainable standards, and raising awareness among stakeholders about the importance of being hospitable hosts to all visitors. With this tourism revival continuing to pick up momentum amid volatile global challenges, Thailand is aiming for US$72 billion (THB2.38 trillion) in overall tourism revenue in 2023 – representing a return to 80% of the pre-pandemic level seen in 2019.

How do you want to implement your new tagline “meaningful travel” ?

Yuthasak Supasorn: We’re not trying to differentiate Thailand from other countries with our tagline. What we are trying to do is to encourage travellers to discover something new. Lots of travellers these days want to see something different compared to the pre-covid times. We want then to focus on responsible tourism and give them the best options. We will bring travellers to Thailand for a reason. Not just for leisure but for more than that. We have the desire that tourists help to make a contribution to the society, to come here to make something which is better for the community or good for the environment. We will, across the country, raise standards for a sustainable tourism activity. And it should be implemented this year.

HOW THAILAND'S "AMAZING NEW CHAPTERS?" CAMPAIGN IS SET TO BOOST TOURISM SECTOR IN 2023

How do you plan to balance your desire to attract a high number of tourists against travellers who are looking for an authentic, meaningful tourism experience?

Tourism isn’t just about numbers. For TAT, that means to be more focus on the value beyond volumes.

Are there countries which could be “pilot markets” in the implementation of this “meaningful travel concept”? Would Europe – with its decade-long understanding and knowledge of Thailand – be a good choice for example?

It’s easier to start with Europe which is a market very familiar with our products and offer. Actually, the “Meaningful travel” project already started in Scandinavia. We bring Scandinavians to Thailand to broaden the tourism activity in some new areas. Such as taking part in activities to grow palm trees in certain areas or to visit national parks where they can also help protect elephants. We start in Europe with activities and will extend those types of meaningful tourism activities to Asia. And as we want to do something big, we are looking for challenges. This is why I want to begin also in China.

Are there specific themes to be presented this year?

TAT is introducing the new “Amazing 5F and More” concept, aimed at delivering meaningful travel experiences in various aspects such as wellness, luxury, and Thailand’s art of living. We launch the “Amazing 5 F” with activities all-year round in the segments of Food; Festivals; Film; Fight with tradition Muay Thai sport and Fashion.

HOW THAILAND'S "AMAZING NEW CHAPTERS?" CAMPAIGN IS SET TO BOOST TOURISM SECTOR IN 2023

The entire TAT team and yourself will participate at ITB Berlin 2023. What does it mean for you to be back there after the virtual editions due to the covid pandemic?

We set the theme for our comeback for the first time after the interruption due to Covid-19. It will be based on the segmentation of the market based in particular on wellness plus our new meaningful tagline and the strong desire for responsible tourism. These are the three key messages that we want to deliver during the ITB Berlin fair. We will also be promoting tourism towards LGBTQ travel communities as it is one of the major key markets for us in Europe.

25 Best Things to Do in Bangkok (Thailand)

The capital city of Thailand and maybe the traffic jam capital of the planet, Bangkok is a fascinating, exciting and incredible city to visit. Like many other capital cities Bangkok never goes to sleep, there is always a hive of activity as people work around the clock in their various professions.

With eight million inhabitants living within the city you will find yourself encountering every walk of life, from the super poor to the mega rich they all congregate in the one city and each feels at home as the other.

Let’s have a look at the top things to do and see in Bangkok :

1. Visit Wat Pho To See The Reclining Buddha

Reclining Budha, Wat Pho To

A visit to Wat Pho is a must for any traveler to Bangkok, it is the home to the Reclining Buddha which stands at fifteen metres tall and forty six metres long, the feet alone are measured at over five meters. The whole statue is covered in gold leaf and looks incredible when you get up close.

Inside the temple there are 108 bowls and on the way in to the temple you can buy coins for the bowls. The history behind this is that Buddha completed 108 positive actions on his way to becoming perfect. Whilst you are at the temple you can also stop for a while to receive a traditional Thai Massage

Recommended tour : Damnoen Saduak, Reclining Buddha, and Wat Arun Private Tour

2. Visit the Grand Palace

Grand Palace, Bangkok

Of all the places to visit in Bangkok the Grand Palace is the most famous attraction there is. You simply cannot move onto another city until you have taken the time to visit here.

The palace at one time was the king’s home as well as the place where the government of Thailand carried out their work. A trip to the palace can take many hours as there are over 214,000 sq. meters to cover. Be aware of potential scams when outside the palace and only pay the entrance fee when you are actually going in.

Great walking tour available : Walking Temple Tour: Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun

3. Ride the Sky Train

Sky Train, Bangkok

There is only one way to get around Bangkok at any speed whilst keeping cool and that is to jump aboard one of the sky trains. With air conditioned carriages there is no better way to get around.

In most instances you are high above the traffic below giving you a view of the city but also the train takes the most direct route. With nearly every part of Bangkok you would want to visit having a train station, travel could not be simpler.

4. Take a trip around Chatuchak Market.

5. Take a Boat Trip along the Chao Phraya River

Chao Phraya River

Some people refer to Bangkok as the ‘Venice of the East’ this is due to the Chai Phraya River flowing through Bangkok and all of the little canals that feed off of it. The river is the lifeblood of Bangkok, even today 50,000 people still go to work on one of the many ferries that go up and down.

Taking a boat trip down the river is fascinating as you will see high rise condominiums and fancy hotels in one part whilst you will see wooden shacks and children playing in the water in other parts. Feel free to get on and off at any of the stops the ferries make to further explore the city.

The Thai attitude is a little different.” What’s so different about Thailand? Oh, it’s not Thailand in particular. Tourist agency launches new slogan for Thailand: Amazing Thailand. It begins with the people.

Thailand’s tourist agency launched a new slogan to promote travelling in Thailand, told the agency’s office in Stockholm.

Thailand new slogan

“For many visitors it is precisely the population of Thailand who makes the trip an unforgetable memory,” said Mrs. Nalinee Pananon, director of the Thai Tourist Office in Stockholm.

It was at the World Travel Market in London that the Thai Tourist Office launched the new slogan: Amazing Thailand. It begins with the people.

The new campaing aims to highlight the Thai mentality that many visitors have come to appreciate.

“With the new slogan, we want to communicate the human aspects of Thailand, or “Thainess” as we call it. Thainess is about the Thai people’s way of living and the feeling that visitors experience in the country. It’s mentality and hospitality among the population that make Thailand “amazing” and therefore felt this slogan just right,” said Mrs. Nalinee Pananon.

It’s just juxtapositioned to the ill treatment we met at Thailand and counselate at New Delhi and immigration at Bangkok

Someone should present this to the idiots disrespecting democracy blocking the streets of Bangkok. They are definitely not doing any good for this campaign -or Thailand in general. If you are unhappy with the government, go vote at the election.

Advance planning -- know before you go.

WHEN TO GO : Bangkok is a year-round destination, but its tropical climate is more pleasant at different times of the year. No matter when you go, it will be hot and humid, but the cooler days are between November and January (December is the coolest, with average high temperatures reaching 26°C/79°F). Take an umbrella between May and November, as that’s the unpredictable rainier season, but it will still be warm and the rains rarely last more than one or two hours at a time. The highest temperatures happen between March and May, with April being the hottest and most uncomfortable month (the average high is 35°C/95°F). The peak tourist season is December and January. In April you’ll catch the Thai New Year celebrations, while in May you’ll see candlelight processions around important temples, marking Buddha’s Enlightenment. Another major event is the Golden Mount Fair in November, with performances and processions at the foot of the Golden Mount .

VISAS : Citizens from the United States, Australia, and most of Europe can enter Thailand without a pre-arranged visa. You’ll be allowed to stay for 30 days, but those wishing to stay longer can acquire a 60-day tourist visa from a Thai embassy or consulate prior to arrival. You should do that about one month before your departure date.

BOOKINGS : You should book your hotel about three months in advance for the most popular luxury or boutique hotels , especially if you’re staying in December or January. Not only will you have a better chance of getting the preferred room, you’ll also have the best rates. If you’re interested in a tour , book it one week before. If you’re wondering where you should book your room, see our guide to the best neighborhoods to stay in Bangkok .

HOW MANY DAYS IN BANGKOK ? Although many people stay in Bangkok for just two or three days, before or after the Thai beach resort experience, it’s not uncommon for visitors to extend their time to as much as one week or more. You can see the main sights in just two days, but, with its many rooftop pools and bars, spas and massages, Bangkok is also a city for relaxation and pampering, not meant to be rushed. For the full experience, plan at least five days in the city.

WHAT’S NEW IN BANGKOK IN 2022?

The COVID-19 pandemic has put many projects on hold around the world, including in Bangkok, but there are still new attractions in the city to enjoy in 2022. Despite the devastating effects of the pandemic on the travel industry, Bangkok has inaugurated two major new hotels, both located in the same compound on the riverfront. Those are the luxurious Capella Hotel and the Four Seasons Hotel Bangkok . Also new is Paradise Lost, a tropical-inspired and eco-friendly rooftop bar at the design hotel Siam@Siam . Then there’s the city’s ever-expanding transport network. After the new stations of the MRT (the underground metro), which now offer faster connections to popular neighborhoods like Chinatown and the Old City (and they are some quite beautiful stations, especially Wat Mangkon Station, which is decorated with traditional Chinese motifs), come new stations for the BTS Skytrain, although these are on the northbound Sukhumvit line, outside the typical tourist areas. The MRT has also introduced Thailand’s first underground museum, at the Sanam Chai station. It’s a free and very informative exhibition, with artifacts unearthed during the station’s construction, mostly related to the area’s ancient palaces.
