Written by Bryan Dearsley Updated Mar 23, 2023

Author Bryan Dearsley lives in Ontario. He visited the city of Hamilton in the fall of 2022 to tour its attractions and revitalized waterfront .

Located on the western end of Lake Ontario the port city of Hamilton has long been one of Canada's most important industrial centers, but it has also become a popular place to visit, with plenty of things to keep visitors busy. It's an easy day trip from Toronto and less than 40 minutes from Niagara Falls .

Gage Park in East Hamilton, Ontario

Venture inland from the lakeshore up onto the "mountain," as the Niagara Escarpment is known to locals, and you'll find countless pretty waterfalls , most of them easily accessible by pleasant hiking trails.

And, for die-hard hikers, Hamilton makes the perfect jumping-off spot to explore the famous Bruce Trail, which at 890 kilometers in length is the country's longest and oldest trail .

Add to this mix other rewarding places to visit like well-marked conservation areas, museums and art galleries, as well as a vibrant food and drink scene, and you'll not run out of things to do in Hamilton, Ontario.

1. Take a Tour of Dundurn Castle

2. hike the historic bruce trail, 3. view the royal botanical gardens, 4. take flight at the canadian warplane heritage museum, 5. visit canada's "fightingest" warship: hmcs haida, 6. explore hamilton's waterfalls, 7. take a waterfront stroll in bayfront park, 8. see the greenhouse in gage park, 9. enjoy the art gallery of hamilton, 10. hamilton museum of steam & technology, 11. battlefield house museum & park national historic site, 12. travel back in time at westfield heritage village, 13. score a touchdown at the canadian football hall of fame & museum, 14. visit the rock garden at rbg, hamilton - climate chart.

Dundurn Castle

Built in 1835, Dundurn Castle is as close as you'll get to an authentic Regency-style manor house anywhere in Canada. Consisting of more than 1,700 square meters of living space and some 40 rooms, its most striking feature is its stunning Neoclassical design, most notably the four huge pillars at its main entrance.

The home of businessman Sir Allan MacNab, who became prime minister of Canada in 1854, this striking building featured many innovations in its construction, including running water and gas lighting. Purchased by the City of Hamilton around 1900, the building has been carefully restored to look just as it would have in 1855.

Interior of Dundurn Castle

Highlights of a visit include seeing original décor and furnishings, as well as anecdotes and history shared by the well-informed costumed guides. If you're visiting in winter, you'll get to see the house decorated for Christmas festivities. Be sure to check into the availability of the fun cooking classes on offer in the home's historic kitchen.

In addition to the building's interior, be sure to explore the grounds, too. Along the way, you'll see the splendid folly, a two-acre kitchen garden (still in use), and the old coach house (now a shop).

Free garden tours are also available and are highly recommended; you'll be rewarded with superb views over Burlington Bay and Bayfront Park, along with some memorable selfies with this grand old home as a backdrop.

Canterbury Falls

Walking the length of the Bruce Trail is an 890-kilometer-long bucket list item for diehard hikers. It stretches from the mighty Niagara Falls all the way north to Tobermory on Lake Huron , passing through the ski resort of Blue Mountain and nearby Collingwood on the way. Fortunately for the rest of us, this epic hiking trail can be broken down into manageable bits that lend themselves perfectly to bite-sized adventures.

Given its location on the Niagara Escarpment, an area of outstanding natural beauty that's been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Hamilton makes for the perfect jumping-off spot for those wanting to tackle one of the prettiest sections of this iconic trail, which is one of Canada's best hikes .

Along the way, you'll pass some of the escarpment's most spectacular waterfalls, including the pretty Canterbury Falls . Located in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area just a few minutes west of downtown Hamilton, the Bruce Trail passes directly by the falls.

Address: 650 Governors Road, Dundas, Ontario

The Royal Botanical Gardens

Although officially a part of the neighboring city of Burlington , Ontario, the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) should definitely be included on your list of things to do in Hamilton. Exploring this spectacular attraction, just 10 minutes' drive east of Hamilton, can easily occupy the best part of a day, so be sure to plan accordingly, and take good walking shoes.

Covering a vast area of over 2,420 acres, the gardens are rich in biodiversity and are home to more than 1,100 species of plants, many of them native to the region. Among the rarest of plant species found here are the aptly named bashful bulrush and the endangered red mulberry tree.

Entrance to the Royal Botanical Gardens

It's also well-known among birders, who can expect to see a variety of species year-round. Of the 300 species that can be seen here, most are passing through on their way to warmer climes.

The gardens are broken into a number of areas, one of the largest being Hendrie Park, the RBG's largest cultivated gardens. Here, you'll find the impressive Rose Garden, which includes a variety of hardier, cold-weather Canadian types, and the attractive Morrison Woodland Garden, an especially lovely spot to visit in spring when the forest floor is littered with trilliums, the official provincial flower.

If you're visiting in winter, be sure to check out the RBG's official website for news of events and festivals . Highlights include an impressive display of Christmas lights, festive treats, and music.

Address: 80 Plains Road W, Burlington, Ontario

Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum

Home to one of Canada's largest historic military collections, the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum is a must-visit at any time of year. Located at Hamilton's international airport, its static displays include 47 military aircraft ranging from WWI-era prop jobs to more modern jet fighters.

The majority of these classic old planes are fully restored and operable. No two visits are quite the same, as they're frequently moved in and out of the huge hangar that serves as the museum. Also interesting is the fact that there's always a plane undergoing restoration in the main hanger, allowing visitors to observe and interact with those working on these machines.

The star of the show, though, is its Avro Lancaster. One of only two of these iconic WW2 bombers still able to fly, this aircraft is often out on display at air shows and events, so call ahead of time to see if she's home. Other rare aircraft include a Hawker Hurricane and Supermarine Spitfire, both well-known for their roles in the Battle of Britain.

If possible, try to time your visit to coincide with the museum's annual air show. Better still, splash out on the rare opportunity to actually fly in one of these vintage aircraft. A large gift shop and café are located on the premises.

Address: 9280 Airport Road, Mount Hope, Ontario

HMCS Haida

Nicknamed Canada's "fightingest ship" for its record of sinking the most enemy tonnage while serving the country's navy in WW2, HMCS Haida National Historic Site is another waterfront tourist attraction to add to your Hamilton travel itinerary.

Built in Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Britain and launched in 1943, this historic destroyer is easily accessed from her berth at Hamilton's Pier 9. Designated a National Historic Site, this well-preserved museum ship is fun to explore for all ages.

Highlights of a visit include seeing the often "tight" sleeping and eating quarters shared by the ship's crew of over 250 men, along with the officer's quarters, the engine room, and the bridge. There's plenty of hands-on fun to be had, too, including trying your hand at Morse code, as well as using vintage RADAR equipment to "search" for enemy submarines.

A number of informative guided tours are available and last around an hour. On special occasions, you can even witness the ship's deck guns being fired.

Albion Falls

Of the more than 100 waterfalls known to be located on the Niagara Escarpment, many of the most picturesque can be found within the city limits of Hamilton. The most popular of these is the spectacular Albion Falls , also known as "lover's leap."

Standing nearly 20 meters tall, this cascade falls is located where the fast flowing Red Hill Creek flows over the escarpment, along the way passing over a number of downward steps that add significantly to the appeal. Some of the best views can be had from King's Forest Park. While especially pretty in the fall, it can get busy, so try to avoid weekends in September and October if you can.

Other Hamilton waterfalls can be reached by following well-marked trails. One of the most popular routes is the "Great Falls Loop." This pleasant 3.5-kilometer escarpment route features superb views over the surrounding countryside, taking in Great Falls along the way.

Also worth seeing is Tews Falls. Standing 41 meters tall, this ribbon waterfalls can be found in the Webster's Falls Conservation Area in Dundas, and is best visited in warmer weather.

Other notable waterfalls to visit include the 37-meter-tall Devil's Punch Bowl, located in the conservation area of the same name; picturesque Webster's Falls, standing 22 meters; and the 21-meter-tall Tiffany Falls.

Bayfront Park

Once considered something of an industrial wasteland — it was (and in some areas, still is) home to heavy industry — Hamilton's waterfront has been the subject of an ambitious regeneration scheme over the past decade or so.

Located to the west end of Hamilton Harbour, Bayfront Park is central to this revitalization and has been transformed from a former landfill site into one of the city's most attractive green spaces.

Bayfront Park

Circled by a network of level trails (including some for bikes) that connect to an additional six acres of green space at Pier 4 Park (and even farther if you follow the Waterfront Trail), it's a delightful place to visit. Highlights of the 1,800 meters of shoreline include a natural fish habitat, a sandy beach that's great for kids, a public boat launch plus a nearby marina, and plenty of parking.

There's good fishing here, too, so make sure your permit is up-to-date. If visiting in summer, check the city's events calendar for news and details of the frequent concerts and festivals held here.

Address: 200 Harbour Front Drive, Hamilton, Ontario

Gage Park

Located in East Hamilton, a few minutes' drive from downtown, Gage Park is well worth including on your Hamilton travel itinerary. One of the city's most popular green spaces, the park was established in the 1920s and features numerous flowerbeds that blossom each spring, an historic fountain, as well as plenty of trees providing shade for those wanting to linger and enjoy a picnic.

The highlight of a visit is exploring the park's new Tropical Greenhouse . Opened in 2020, this vast 14,000 square foot structure is home to numerous subtropical plants and palm trees, and is open to the public year-round. Other features include waterfalls and fish ponds, as well as seating for those who want to soak up the ambience.

Address: 1000 Main Street E, Hamilton, Ontario

Art Gallery of Hamilton

Those with a penchant for art would do well to visit the Art Gallery of Hamilton (AGH) . It was established in 1914 and later moved to its current location on King Street West, a modern-style building designed by Trevor P. Garwood-Jones, in 1977. There's more than 7,000 square meters of museum space to explore here.

Featuring over 10,000 artworks, the museum has built a reputation for the importance of its permanent collection, which includes numerous works by Canadian artists. It also features works by international contemporary artists.

In addition to rotating displays from its permanent collection, the museum also features regular visiting exhibits ; while general admission is free, entrance is charged for traveling exhibits, except for "free Fridays," when all admissions are complimentary. Guided tours are available, and a good café is located on-site, along with a gift shop.

Address: 123 King Street W, Hamilton, Ontario

Hamilton Museum of Steam & Technology

A visit to the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology offers a fascinating glimpse at what would have been a state-of-the-art waterworks in Victorian times. Housed in a building constructed in 1859 in the Hamilton Waterworks complex, the Steam Museum is a one-of-kind relic that has preserved the original steam engines that pumped water across the city until it closed in 1910.

As impressive as the scale of the machinery is its elegant design. As well as being functional, this "new" technology had to impress investors and customers, who had to pay for the privilege of having water delivered to their homes.

In addition to a short informative movie, visitors are given a fascinating guided tour around the complex.

Address: 900 Woodward Ave, Hamilton, Ontario

Battlefield House Museum & Park National Historic Site

Centered around the elegant mansion constructed in 1796, Battlefield House Museum and Park National Historic Site is a must-visit for those interested in Hamilton's rich history.

It was on this site in 1813 that British troops faced off against American invaders during the Battle of Stoney Creek , a pivotal confrontation in the War of 1812 that turned the tide of the conflict in Britain's favor.

In addition to exploring the 32-acre grounds, visitors can also enjoy an informative guided tour of the home itself. Pay a visit to the 100-foot-tall monument behind the home, built in 1913 to commemorate the event, as well as the original colonial style home that now serves as a gift shop and event space.

Address: 77 King St W, Stoney Creek, Ontario

Boiling maple syrup at Westfield Heritage Village

Located in the community of Rockton just 25 minutes' drive west of Hamilton, Westfield Heritage Village has done an impressive job of preserving a snapshot of the region's past. It consists of 35 historic buildings reconstructed around a central "village" on an 840-acre site.

Highlights include the opportunity to interact with costumed interpreters as they recreate the lives and culture of Canadians from the 1800s to the early 1900s. Also fun is paying a visit to the reproduction general store, complete with traditional candies for purchase, as well as the maple sugar shack. If you're traveling with kids, encourage them to dress up in the period costumes provided.

Guided sightseeing tours are available, and regular demonstrations of skills and crafts are held throughout the day. Be sure to also spend time exploring the grounds, which feature pleasant trails through the meadows and woods of its designated conservation area.

Address: 1049 Kirkwall Road, Rockton, Ontario

Canadian Football Hall of Fame & Museum

Established in 1963 to honor the nation's "other" most popular sport (the most popular being hockey), the Canadian Football Hall of Fame is a must-visit for sports fans when in Hamilton. Located in the Tim Hortons Field stadium , which serves as home to the Hamilton Tiger Cats football team, the museum is run by the Canadian Football League to celebrate the sport and its players.

Exhibits include the history of the sport in Canada, as well as university and school football. Displays of players' uniforms and stats are featured heavily, along with over 250 metallic busts of many of the big stars from the game.

The most iconic sculpture, though, stands outside the stadium's gate 3. Called "Touchdown," this life-size sculpture depicts two players, one receiving the ball while the other tackles him. Admission to the museum is free on game days.

Address: 64 Melrose Ave N, Hamilton, Ontario

Rock Garden

If you've only got time to see just a little of the sprawling Royal Botanical Gardens, make it the Rock Garden . The RBG's first garden and the only part of this popular Ontario attraction to actually be located in Hamilton proper, the Rock Garden opened in 1932 and features stunning year-round displays of perennials and other garden features spread across its six acres.

Highlights include more than 10,000 individual plants, attractive water and landscape features, and an excellent on-site restaurant.

Fun Things to Do in Hamilton

Enjoy hamilton’s world-renowned gardens, 1. hamilton gardens.

Hamilton Gardens is the most visited tourist attraction in the Waikato region… but with good reason!

It is so unique because each enclosed garden has a different theme. This means that in a single afternoon you can roam through Renaissance Italy, meander through Modernist America and stroll through a Surrealist garden straight out of Alice in Wonderland. They even opened a new Egyptian-themed garden inspired on a Middle Kingdom temple (2040BC and 1782 BC).

I wasn’t surprised to find out these gardens have previously won the International Gardens of the Year Award, alongside others. Nor will you be!

Perfect for families , or single adults with a short attention span (that’s me!), the fact that each garden has a different theme is sure to keep even the most distracted amongst us entertained.

There are plenty of ‘interactive’ elements, such as the surrealist garden’s giant door where you can recreate this photo below. You’ll be sure to look smaller than a Hobbit!

A woman walking along the gardens and pools with fountain in Italian Renaissance Garden.

Don’t be mistaken by thinking this garden is all style and no substance; the gardens are also a haven for native trees and flowers.

Guided tours are available for those who want to learn more about both the symbolic and natural significance of the plants cared for here.

Opening hours: 7:30am to 7:30pm.

Facilities: drinking stations, toilets, a comfortable cafe. Options available for those with limited mobility.

The area includes open pasture, lakes and gardens, and is best explored by one of the many walking paths. Opening hours: 8am to half an hour before dusk.

Entry: Free.

Facilities: Toilets and drinking water at the car park. Dogs allowed on leads. No push bikes.

55 Taitua Road, Temple View, Hamilton 3289

Arts & Culture in Hamilton

4. the sculpture park.

At the 18 hectare Waitakaruru Arboretum lies the 2km nature trail. On this walk over 100 sculptures transform the area into a huge outdoor art gallery.

The area was initially a way to rehabilitate a disused quarry that was first developed in 1991. Now, it is a fun way to enjoy Waikato views, bubbling streams winding through the trees and small waterfalls.

Tickets:  The park is only open for casual visitors on Sundays and public holidays, however you can book for other days online in advance. Tickets cost $15 for adults and $5 for 5-14 year olds.

207 Scotsman Valley Road, Tauwhare 3287

5. Hamilton Street Art

On your way to lunch in Hamilton central, look out for the colourful street art that lines the walls. Some of these vibrant artworks are hidden down back alleys, while others you’ll catch from the car window as you drive by. The street art scene here is still growing with the murals an opportunity to champion local artists. You’ll also find a fantastic range of international street artists in the city too.

The most fun way to spot street art is to simply look out for it as you walk around, but you can also search on your map for the Founders Theatre Mural, Anzac Parade or Victoria Street (if you are short on time.) There is also the annual Boon Street Art Festival, the last of which took place in November 2020 at the University of Waikato.

The Waikato Museum is the best place to visit to learn about local history and culture. Its engaging 13 galleries and 25 exhibitions change throughout the year, making each visit feel new.

The museum aims to tell stories from a regional and global perspective through its interactive programme.

The Maori art here – both historical and contemporary – is a great way to learn about New Zealand’s culture.

Family-friendly exhibitions include learning about local culture when walking around the war waka Te Winika (a Maori canoe) and interactive science exhibitions.

Entry: Free though a donation/koha is welcome. There is an admission fee for some optional exhibitions and activities. Admission fees apply to some exhibitions and activities.

7. hamilton lake domain.

Hamilton Lake, or Lake Rotoroa, is a peaceful retreat in the heart of the city. The circular 3.8km trail is an opportunity for a gentle walk, though you can also chill out on a sunny day. It’s also the perfect spot to stop for a picnic!

8. Walk the Riverside Walkway

One of the best local strolls in Hamilton is the Riverside Walkway!

Also suitable for cyclists, this path is a lovely way to enjoy the Waikato River, which meanders through the city.

The complete walk is 11km, though it’s easy to access it in the city and just do short sections at a time.

Entry: Free

Did you know? The Waikato River is the longest river in New Zealand at 425 kilometres, stretching all the way from Port Waikato to Lake Taupo. Waikato appropriately translates to ‘flowing water’ in the Māori language .

9. Waikato River Cruises

Want a more relaxing way to enjoy the river scenery? Whether you want a family-friendly eco-tour, or fancy booking one of the Waikato wine cruises for a special occasion, a boat trip surely has to be the most appropriate way to enjoy the mighty Waikato river.

You can take the Waikato River Explorer directly from Hamilton Gardens on specific dates, with trips lasting from 55 – 90 minutes.

Advance booking is required. Ticket prices begin at $29.

Hit the Trails and Enjoy Hamilton Hikes

The rolling countryside that surrounds Hamilton is home to some of New Zealand’s lesser-known hiking trails. These are perfect for anyone looking for something more ambitious than the Riverside Walkway mentioned earlier.

Before embarking on a trail, be sure to make sure you have the appropriate clothing, footwear, and sunscreen if necessary. Fill up your water bottle in advance and take snacks to give you a boost on the steeper trails. Follow directions – look up a map in advance if you need to – and be sure not to step off the pathways. It’s important to use the boot-cleaning stations as required (usually at the beginning of footpaths next to the car park) in order to protect the native flora and fauna .

10. Hakarimata Summit

The Hakarimata trail has wonderful views across the Waikato Basin from its 374m summit. While only a 2km return, it is steep and requires approximately 3 hours.

There are many different trails to choose from in the Hakarimata Scenic Reserve giving you plenty of opportunities to get to know this area.

If you’re feeling enthusiastic, the full Hakarimata Walkway is 12km (one way) and takes up to 8 hours.

11. Kauri Loop Track

This walk is a wonderful way to see some of the largest kauri trees in the Waikato region – look out for the Kauri grove about 40 minutes into the walk. The 3km loop takes up to two hours in full.

87 Parker Road, Huntly 3771

12. Te Otamanui Walkway

This 6 – 10km walkway is still being built at present.

Starting at Te Kowhai Village, it will follow the Te Kowhai Stream to the Waipa River.

The development is in part community effort, with boardwalks and pathways being constructed to make this a comfortable walk which does not disturb the native trees.

It will be a great way to see the 60 acre lake, Te Otamanui Lagoon.

Some of the trail is already open, should you wish to view this area’s sprawling wildlife.

612 Horotiu Road, Burbush 3288

13. bridal veil falls.

On my Hamilton day trip from Auckland , I am very glad I made the extra time to visit Bridal Veil Falls. The Pokoka River takes a 55-metre drop over the cliff and into the sublime pool below, and the area is surrounded by lush green trees and shrubs.

The first two lookouts over Bridal Veil Falls are only a 5-minute walk from the carpark, and the bottom platform takes approximately 15-minutes. There is also an additional lookout built into the pathway.

I was impressed by the care taken to give visitors different perspectives of this mighty waterfall!

The walkway here is very well-maintained, though it is quite steep climbing back up the wooden steps at the end of your visit.

From Bridal Veil Falls, you can easily journey further into the scenic surfing town of Raglan.

14. Hobbiton

Hamilton Gardens has become a great detour for tourists (even on a shorter New Zealand road trip) due to its proximity to some of the North Island’s most well-known attractions.

One of these attractions is indeed Hobbiton, which is only a 1-hour drive from central Hamilton. We tried this tour ourselves, and, like many who came before us, our review of this tour is nothing short of exceptional. Whether you’re a fan or not, this is a local must-do!

Fans of Peter Jackson’s interpretation of the ‘The Lord of the Rings ’ will find themselves in a fantasty wonderland.

Even if you’re not a fan, Hobbiton is well worth a visit – the care and time they put into this attraction is beyond compare in New Zealand!

15. Putaruru Blue Springs

Located not far from Hamilton you’ll find the Putaruru Blue Springs – one of the most stunning bodies of water in New Zealand!

From Hamilton, you’ll pass through Tirau (a bit of an attraction in itself!) before turning off to the Putaruru Blue Springs.

Once in the area, you’ll have the choice of parking as completing a 2-hour walk in, or you can drive further around and park just 10 minutes from the springs.

Regardless of which option you choose, the springs are definitely worth the short drive out of Hamilton (and can even be done as a day trip from Auckland.)

  • Last Updated: February 8, 2024

From enjoying the beautiful waterfalls of the Niagara Escarpment to the hip art scene downtown, here is our list of the best things to do in Hamilton!

Hamilton is by far Ontario’s most underrated city for travel.

Overshadowed by its big sister Toronto and the enchanting Niagara Falls just 72km to the east, most people who travel to the area have unfortunately never even heard of Hamilton.

But Hamilton is a small city that packs a big punch, full of natural beauty and vibrant city life.

Named after George Hamilton, a Canadian merchant, the city saw major growth when a canal was cut in Lake Ontario, making Hamilton a major port in 1832.

By the early 1900s the steel and manufacturing industry was booming with four major companies opening up shop in Hamilton, Stelco, Dofasco, Procter & Gamble, and the Beech-Nut Packing Company.

Hamilton is located in the “armpit” of Ontario, where the western end of Lake Ontario meets the Niagara Escarpment.

Known for its steel manufacturing, which earned it the nickname “steeltown,” Hamilton is much more than just an industrial city.

With the Niagara Escarpment , a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, running right through the middle of the city, and the south shores of Lake Ontario in the downtown area, Hamilton is an outdoor lover’s paradise.

Yet, the city offers something for everyone, as there is also a hip art, music and food scene right downtown.

With over 100 waterfalls located throughout the city, most along the Niagara Escarpment and the famous Bruce Trail , there are plenty of outdoor activities and hiking trails in Hamilton!

Hamilton is also becoming known for its excellent restaurants and art galleries lining its vibrant downtown streets.

With so many things to do in Hamilton Ontario so close together, it’s a great reason to choose Hamilton as a better stopover before visiting Niagara Falls instead of the overly crowded and busy Toronto.

Although Hamilton is more of an industrial city, there are plenty of things to do in Hamilton that combine nature, history and culture.

Like many Canadian cities, Hamilton offers several museums, gardens and parks to enjoy within its city limits.

You could easily spend a day or two checking out places such as the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, Dundurn Castle and the Art Gallery of Hamilton .

Or you could spread out your trip with more leisure by strolling through and picnicking at parks such as the Royal Botanical Gardens and the Bayfront Park .

But some of the top Hamilton attractions are a series of waterfalls throughout the area.

Whether you want hiking trails, waterfalls, or a day trip to visit the famous Niagara Falls, you will certainly get your fill in exploring the beauty that each fall offers the city.

Here is our list of fun things to do in Hamilton!

With over 100 waterfalls and cascades located throughout the city of Hamilton, it’s plain to see why the city earned the nickname “City of Waterfalls”.

The Niagara Escarpment , the very same region that the renowned Niagara Falls is on, provides the best landscape for waterfalls.

Most of these waterfalls are very accessible and a few are even right in town! You can find several while hiking the popular Bruce Trail as well.

Plan to see the spectacular Webster’s Falls and Tew’s Falls on the same day as they are both located within the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area.

Webster’s Falls is the largest of all the falls in Hamilton with a 30-metre crest. Tew’s Falls is the tallest at 41 metres. They are highlights of Ontario and the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area.

The other most popular falls are Albion Falls and the Devil’s Punchbowl Falls.

Albion Falls is a beautiful 19-metre cascade falls and is a short hike off the Bruce Trail.

While there make sure to stop to see Buttermilk Falls just 1 minute up the road.

Devil’s Punchbowl Falls is the most unique waterfall out of the group and is a 37-metre ribbon waterfall that flows over a horseshoe-shaped cliff with colourful layers of stratified rock segments.

It is possible to do the last three waterfalls in one day.

With so many waterfalls located so close together, you could spend an entire day exploring several of your favourites.

Or spread out your waterfall hikes over a few days while you tour different parts of the city!

Hamilton Travel Guide

Now that you know what to do in Hamilton, here’s our guide to where to stay and where to eat when in the city.

Best Accommodation – Where to Stay in Hamilton

Although the city is not necessarily a top tourist destination, there are plenty of options so you won’t be left wondering where to stay in Hamilton.

Hamilton is not as friendly to the backpacker as other cities, so your options with hostels are limited.

But reasonable budget and mid-range hotels are not much more if you don’t mind spending a little more for a room.

There are also tonnes of options for renting out rooms or entire homes with Airbnb.

Being just outside of the main city of Toronto, prices for accommodations in Hamilton tend to be lower than in Toronto and are reasonably priced compared to other places in Canada.

Hamilton Pring Guest House is Ontario’s first backpacker’s hostel and it is the only hostel located in Hamilton.

You can’t beat its location, right in the heart of downtown Hamilton.

And on a backpacker’s budget, this is about as close to the action as it gets.

With options that range from 4-bed co-ed or female-only dorms to private double bedrooms, you can rest in whatever comfort suits your budget.

Rooms are reasonably priced, starting at USD$25 for dormitories and $45 for private accommodations.

With a shared lounge, Pring Guest House is a great place to meet other travellers. All rooms include free WiFi and towels and linens.

You can also expect to have hot coffee and tea, lockers for your valuables and a full self-catering kitchen.

Although located on the outskirts of downtown Hamilton, the Super 8 by Wyndham is one of your best options for budget accommodation in the city.

With rates as low as USD$78 for a room, you can’t beat the price in terms of the amenities.

Each room includes free WiFi, continental breakfast and a flat-screen TV. There is also a fitness centre, hot tub and a restaurant and bar on site.

Additionally, the hotel is consistently rated high for its service, location and cleanliness.

Only a five-minute drive from the airport and a short drive to downtown, the hotel’s location is central to all the top sightseeing spots in Hamilton.

After a full day of Hamilton sightseeing you’ll want to come back to a comfortable hotel with a welcoming environment and Staybridge Suites Downtown offers all of that and more.

When you stay here you are just minutes away walking to a variety of attractions, restaurants, pubs and transportation in the city centre.

The hotel offers spacious suite-style rooms with a full kitchenette, couch and a large flat screen tv so you can spread out and enjoy your stay in Hamilton.

Expect a clean, comfortable experience and friendly staff to make your stay more pleasant.

With a free breakfast buffet offered, an indoor swimming pool, theatre room, fitness centre and planned evening social’s three times a week, you may never want to leave the hotel!

Rooms start out at around USD$108, making it an incredible value when you are looking for a place to stay in Hamilton.

The Best Western C Hotel is an exceptional choice when it comes to accommodations and great service.

Hamilton’s only boutique luxury hotel offers the conveniences of home in a luxurious setting with an Italian theme.

All of the rooms are large suites with a whirlpool bathtub, large LCD TV, free WiFi, mini-fridge and microwave, bathrobes and complimentary breakfast.

The hotel also has an indoor swimming pool and hot tub, on-site restaurant and bar, a fitness centre and a rooftop terrace creating one of the most relaxing experiences you can have in Hamilton.

All of this in a convenient location close to shopping malls, top attractions, Hamilton Harbour, and all that Hamilton has to offer makes Best Western C Hotel by Carmens the best value by far.

Best Restaurants in Hamilton

Hamilton has recently become a top foodie destination with top chefs moving in from Toronto and opening trendy new eateries downtown and across the city.

Whether you want to eat classic Canadian fare, fancy European cuisine, or dishes with an Asain flair, you will find it in Hamilton.

From top-notch restaurants to casual eateries there’s no shortage of one of a kind places to eat at in Hamilton.

Offering delicious soups to warm up your belly, you can’t go wrong with choosing The Burnt Tongue as your next lunch spot or as a cure for a late-night hangover.

Pair your bargain-priced soup with a delicious grilled cheese or salad. Whatever you choose, you can’t pick wrong at The Burnt Tongue!

Alternatively, the Hamilton Farmers Market is a good budget option. You can pick up fresh produce to cook yourself or grab some yummy snacks at the Hamilton Farmers Market.

You won’t find a classically prepared cheeseburger at Hambrgr . But you will find a wildly creative burger sourced from local farmers.

Try the Mowie Wowie, a pulled pork sandwich with pineapple jam, or the Chef Smash, a weekly created hamburger.

And if you aren’t a meat-eater, no worries! There are plenty of vegan dishes to choose from.

Without a doubt, Quatrefoil is the top luxury restaurant in Hamilton. Featuring a French-inspired menu, you can expect fresh seasonally-prepared meals served in a historic restored home.

The Top 8 Things to Do in Hamilton, New Zealand

hamilton places to visit

 denizunlusu/Getty

Located in the upper North Island, Hamilton is New Zealand's fourth-largest city, with a population of around 240,000 people. Just a 90-minute drive from both Auckland and Rotorua, and approximately two hours from Taupo, Hamilton is conveniently located while traveling around the North Island.

Although Hamilton is located inland, the mighty Waikato River runs through the city, and it's not far from the beaches of the rugged west coast. To the east are attractions associated with "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" movies. Plus, there are some low-key and charming attractions in the city itself. Read on for some tips on the best things to see and do in Hamilton.

Stroll through the Hamilton Gardens

Boy Anupong/Getty

Ask a local Hamiltonian the number one thing you shouldn't miss in their city, and there's a high chance they'll say the Hamilton Gardens . While traditional botanical gardens focus on types of plants and are organized accordingly, the Hamilton Gardens are laid out according to different kinds of garden design. The effect is a showcase of the cultural meaning of gardens over the centuries.

There are more than two dozen different sections at the Hamilton Gardens, including the Indian Char Bagh Garden, the Italian Renaissance Garden, the English Flower Garden, the Chinoiserie Garden, the Tudor Garden... and much more. Plus, it's located along a picturesque stretch of the Waikato River.

To top all this off, entry to the gardens is free. All cities should have their own Hamilton Gardens.

Taste Local Tea at Zealong Tea Estate

Many travelers to New Zealand are familiar with the country's extensive vineyards used in the production of wine, but tea? Not so much. Kiwis drink a lot of tea, but most of it isn't grown here.

However, Zealong Tea Estate , just north of the central city, is New Zealand's only commercial tea estate. As well as beautiful views, at Zealong visitors can enjoy a full lunch or delicious high tea, take a guided tea walk, and participate in a unique tea ceremony. There are sculptures dotted throughout the grounds that add to the scenic environment. Bookings are essential for the tours.

Cruise on the Waikato River

 Wendy_Paul / Getty Images

The Waikato River is the longest in New Zealand, running 264 miles through the central and northern North Island. Hamilton is situated on the banks of the Waikato River, so its presence is vital to the natural fabric of the city.

A relaxing and scenic way to experience the river and Hamilton city at the same time is to take a cruise on the Waikato River Explorer . Cruises run daily, and there are also select weekly wine-tasting cruises and cafe cruises. You can even combine a cruise with a visit to the abovementioned Hamilton Gardens, as a "floating cafe" service departs from the jetty at the Hamilton Gardens every hour. Bookings are a good idea.

Learn to Surf at Raglan

Tariq El Bitar / Getty Images

One of the most dramatic beaches in a country of spectacular beaches , Raglan is a place to surf rather than just go for a casual swim. The glittering sweep of black sand at Ngarunui Beach, in particular, is an ideal place to take a surfing lesson, with surf schools operating in the area (in season, and conditions permitting). The western end of the beach is best for swimming and surfing, while the eastern end is ideal for long walks.

Raglan town is a small place with lovely cafes and, of course, plenty of places to buy surf clothes and gear. It's about a 40-minute drive west of Hamilton, and one of the closest beaches to the inland city.

Be aware that the west coast of both the North and South Islands is exposed and rugged, and generally comprised of black sand. Always adhere to safety warnings at Raglan and elsewhere, as conditions can often be hazardous.

Pick Your Own Blueberries at the Lavender Backyard Garden

Courtesy of Lavender Backyard Garden

The Lavender Backyard Garden is a delightful destination if you're traveling with kids (or even if you're not!) The family-owned lavender and blueberry farm produces a range of skincare products, essential oils, and health foods, which are available to buy at the on-site shop. And, in the summer season (December to March), you can pick-your-own fresh blueberries to take away with you. It's best to have your own car to visit the Lavender Backyard Garden, as it's about a ten-minute drive out of town.

Take a Day Trip to Hobbiton

TripSavvy / Alisha McDarris

A significant reason why some travelers come to New Zealand in the first place is to visit the locations where "The Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" trilogies were filmed. Fans of the films shouldn't miss a trip to the Hobbiton Movie Set when traveling through the central North Island. Located in Matamata, a previously nondescript farming town less than an hour's drive from Hamilton, the Hobbiton Movie Set transports visitors to the Shire, the quaint village home of the mythical hobbits.

Director of the films, Kiwi Peter Jackson, chose this land in Matamata as the location of the Shire because of its similarity to how he visualized it from the books. The area was previously a farm, and there were no roads or electricity cables in sight, making it a perfect filming location. Now you can see 44 "hobbit holes" on a guided tour. While many filming locations in New Zealand are just landscapes these days, with little evidence that they were filming locations, this isn't the case at Hobbiton.

Tours including transportation run from all over the North Island, but if you're staying in Hamilton and have your own wheels, you can easily make your own way there and join a tour in Matamata.

Learn about Waikato's History at the Waikato Museum

The Waikato district is very significant to New Zealand's modern history, as it was the scene of the Land Wars between Maori and European settlers in the 1860s, when around 1.2 million acres of land were confiscated from local Maori tribes. Learn about this dramatic period of New Zealand history and much more at the Waikato Museum . The museum also displays the work of local artists from the past and present, and has plenty of programs for kids, too. Entry is free.

Encounter Native Flora and Fauna at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari

natmint / Getty Images

This "mainland ecological island" is surrounded by a 29-mile pest-proof fence, allowing the ancient forest within its boundaries to be a refuge for some of New Zealand's most endangered birds and animals. There are no mammalian predators at Sanctuary Mountain Maungatautari , allowing native flora and fauna to flourish.

Visitors can take hikes or more leisurely walks around the sanctuary mountain, including guided nature walks with a conservationist. It's as close as visitors can get to experiencing New Zealand before humans arrived here, upsetting the ecological balance. Birds and animals that live on the mountain include kiwis, takahe, giant weta, and tuataras. Bookings for guided tours are essential. The sanctuary is less than an hour's drive south-east of Hamilton.

The Waikato region is one of the best in New Zealand for hot air ballooning and is also home to the annual festival, Balloons over Waikato which will be taking place from 15-19 March 2022.

For many people, hot air ballooning is a bucket list activity, and it is something you can do all year round in Hamilton (depending on the weather). The Kiwi Balloon Company is one of the best when it comes to taking you up in the skies. Setting off from one of Hamilton’s Lakes, you will arrive early in the morning to watch the set-up and the inflating of the balloon before taking to the skies.

The adventure will take you over the city, farmlands, and the mighty Waikato River and on a clear day, you can see the mountains of Ruapehu, Pironga, Te Aroha and Taranaki. The peace and tranquillity will take your breath away and once you are back on terra firma, you will enjoy a glass of bubbles and snacks.

5.      Taitua Arboretum

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Waikato NZ (@waikatonewzealand)

The Taitua Arboretum has a collection of mature trees covering 20 hectares. Started in 1973 by John and Bunny Mortimer as a place to provide shade and shelter to animals in the area, the arboretum was gifted to the people of Hamilton in 1997 and is available for everyone to enjoy.

As well as being home to native and exotic trees, the arboretum also features open pastures, lakes, and woodland gardens, all linked by a series of connected walking paths.

6.      Classics Museum

If classic cars are your jam, then Hamilton is a must-visit. The Classics Museum is a celebration of classic cars and features over 100 classic cars as part of their vast collection. The museum is not only home to classic cars, however. You will find an extensive collection of petrol memorabilia – enamel signs, pumps, tins, and oil bottles.

The museum is not just for geeky classic car enthusiasts – there is a little bit of something for everyone in the museum with vintage toys, pedal cars, and scenes from early New Zealand.

7.      Hamilton Lake Domain

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Days in Hamilton (@days_in_hamilton)

It is a huge recreational facility for locals and visitors alike, with lots of water and land-based activities taking place within the domain. Lake Rotoroa caters for water-based activities including yachting, windsurfing, canoeing, paddle boats, model boats, and fishing.

On land, the domain is home to the Gallagher Hockey Centre and also plays host to a number of local cricket teams. Informally, it’s a great space for the whole family and is also home to the Waikato Balloon Festival.

It plays an integral part in many of the activities that take place in the city including concerts and other large-scale events.

8.      Cherry Blossom Festival

Every year, the city plays host to the annual NZ Cherry Blossom Festival . This is a truly magical event and one that you have to attend to truly appreciate the beauty of these amazing blossom trees.

The festival was set up in 2017, inspired by trespassers trying to break in to take photos of the amazing cherry blossoms at the property of Anne Cao and Paul Oulton. Paul moved to the property, now named English Cherry Tree Manor, in 1997 and at the time, there was very little grass at the property. He has since worked tirelessly to expand the garden in all directions and the festival is a chance to share the beautiful gardens with the people of Hamilton and beyond.

9.      Hobbiton

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Hobbiton Movie Set (@hobbitontours)

Hobbiton provides the opportunity for you to explore the Hobbiton Movie set used in the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies.

According to the official website, “ In 1998, Sir Peter Jackson’s team of location scouts were searching for the iconic rolling hills and lush green pastures of Hobbiton™. An aerial search led them to the Alexander farm, a stunning 1,250-acre sheep farm in the heart of the Waikato. They noted the area’s striking similarity to The Shire™, as described by JRR Tolkien, and quickly realised that the Hobbits™ had found a home.”

Located under an hours’ drive from Hamilton in Matamata, this is your chance to enjoy a second breakfast in a hobbit hole or have a swift pint at The Green Dragon.

10.  Zealong Tea Estate

Widely regarded as a Waikato icon, Zealong Tea Estate is the only commercial tea estate in New Zealand, producing 100% organic award-winning tea, and a world-leading destination for tea, art and hospitality.

Bucket List: Best Places to Visit in Hamilton NZ

Table of Contents

H amilton, a port city, is an excellent base from which you can explore the North Island of New Zealand. While it may not be as popular as Auckland or as pop cultured as Wellington , Hamilton has its own glamor worth discovering. Situated along the famous Waikato River, it is the largest town in the Waikato region. What I like about Hamilton because most of its attractions are completely free.

1. Walk along the Riverside Walkway

As you are still trying to acclimatize yourself to the city, there is no better place to start than the Riverside Walkway alongside the Waikato River.

The boardwalk is around 11 kilometers and is one of the many free things to do in the city. It can be reached from several points from the city center.

2. Check out the Waitomo Caves

Waitomo Caves by Winam via Flickr CC

Visiting the glowing Waitomo Caves is one of the best things to do in Hamilton. Here you get to see millions of glowworms in their natural home. In these limestone caves, you will find the Arachnocampa Luminosa, a unique glowworm species that can only be found here.

But there are other things to see, including the striking limestone formations and black water abyss tour.

3. Admire the Hamilton Gardens

One of the best places to visit in Hamilton for free is the Hamilton Botanical Garden. Opened in the 1960s, more than 50 hectares of flora and fauna are among North Island’s top attractions. The gardens are believed to expand every day. Unlike most New Zealand gardens that you have ever seen, the Hamilton Gardens aren’t botanic; instead, they are designed to accommodate a wide range of cultures and religions.

There are over 20 attractions within the Hamilton Garden, all of which you can freely tour.

4. Ride a hot air balloon

Hot Air Balloon

With its beautiful natural landscape, you need different ways to explore New Zealand, and one of them is by riding a hot air balloon. This is usually on many travelers’ bucket lists; it is a dream for many to touch New Zealand skies in a hot air balloon.

The Kiwi Balloon Company is the hot air balloon tours leader in Hamilton. The tour starts early in the morning, where you can watch as balloons get inflated before ascending to meet the sunrise from the sky.

The tour takes you above the city and notable landmarks like the Waikato River, Pirongia, Ruapehu, and Te Aroha.

5. Enjoy a picnic at the might Hamilton Lake

Hamilton Lake is known for many things, but if you travel with family, the best way to enjoy your time around the lake has a picnic and leisure walks. It is also an excellent bike ride and some backyard cricket.

The lake is usually calm, which is perfect for paddleboard and kayaking.

6. Checkout the Shire

Hobbit holes in hobbiton photo via Depositphotos

In 1998, a team of film directors and producers led by Peter Jackson scouted New Zealand to find Hobbiton’s ideal location. Luckily, he came across Alexander Farm in the region of Waikato.

Located just a few minutes drive from the city, the Shire from the Lord of the Rings trilogies is still intact and open to visitors. You can explore every inch of the Hobbiton, including the movie set and the well-maintained paths.

7. Taste tea at the Zealong Tea Estate

Zealong tea estate at Hamilton, New Zealand

New Zealand is known for its award-winning tasty tea, and the best way to experience it is none other than the Zealong Tea Estate. This teat estate is dedicated to producing 100 percent organic tea.

Visitors can tour the tea paths and learn the estate’s history, particularly the camellia tree. The tour ends with a visit to the Tea House, where you can engage in some cultural tea ceremonies.

8. Admire a sanctuary on top of Mountain Maungatautari

Mount Maungatautari has distinct animals and plants still living in their original ecosystem. As a result, a 47 kilometers pest-proof fence was set up to protect the sanctuary and some of its endangered species, including insects, frogs, birds, reptiles, and bats.

There are both self-walking and guided tours around the reservation, with different trails and enclosures to discover.

9. Celebrate the Art festival at the Hamilton Garden

Hamilton Gardens Arts Festival photo via FB Page

This annual festival is celebrated at the Hamilton garden and recognizes the local creative artists and talents. The event is held every late February and involves a wide range of events. The country’s notable figures, such as Ben Hurley, have in the past graced the occasion.

Visitors can interact with the locals while enjoying live performances and music.

10. Take some pictures at the Cherry Blossom Festival

If you are in Hamilton during spring, you will get a chance to witness one of the most spectacular cherry blossoms you have ever seen. In Waikato, the cherry blossom ushers in the spring – a time of regeneration and fleeting essence of life due to the flower’s short lifespan.

11. Enjoy a cold drink at Victoria Street

Victoria Street is one of the most popular tourist spots in Hamilton. It is a great place to spend the evening enjoying a cold beer and interacting with the locals and other tourists.

Besides numerous drinking spots, there are also plenty of dining options.

12. Try park hopping

The city of Hamilton is choked with stunning parks, including Garden Palace and Hamilton Lake Domain. Meet with other tourists and locals in these parks and watch as the world goes by.

  • Keep children and pets close, and do not climb or otherwise bypass fencing.

10 Surprising Things to Do in Hamilton NZ – Our Guide to Fun

Overlooking the Waikato River is one of many things to do in Hamilton

Hamilton may not be the first spot that comes to mind in New Zealand, but as we discovered, there are a surprising number of fun things to do in Hamilton NZ.

In fact, we visit the world-renowned Hamilton Gardens every time we pass through or near this city. With its impressive collection of themed gardens and beautiful vistas, it’s no surprise it has achieved international attention.

Meanwhile, the Waikato River Walk is a great way to stretch your legs and take in the scenic views. If you are looking for something more unique, the Balloons over Waikato festival draws crowds from the world over, while the Riff Raff statue provides a quirky focal point for the city’s downtown area.

Animal lovers can spend their time at the zoo or at Shaw’s Bird Park.

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing escape or an unusual adventure, this city has something to offer everyone. Let us show you below some of the best places to visit in Hamilton

Top things to do in Hamilton New Zealand

Hamilton gardens, shaw’s bird park, taitua arboretum.

  • Waikato River Walk
  • Riff Raff Square

Waikato Museum

Classics museum, hamilton zoo, zealong tea estate, balloons over waikato, outdoor and free things to do in hamilton nz.

One of the best things about this city is that so many of the cool places to visit in Hamilton have free entry.

Tropical Garden, Hamilton Gardens, New Zealand

Location: Hungerford Crescent Hours: Enclosed gardens are open daily from 9 am to 5 pm (last entry 4.30 pm) Entry: Free

If you are wondering what is Hamilton NZ known for? This is it.

A must-see urban oasis, we love the Hamilton Gardens . They are the region’s most visited attraction, drawing nearly one million guests annually.

The 54-hectare public venue features themed gardens that take us through time as they tell the story of gardens domestically and worldwide. The 18 themes cover a diverse range, from a Japanese garden of contemplation to a traditional productive Māori garden.

The Gardens are easy to visit on your own and the best of the free things to do in Hamilton. However, we picked up a guidebook for a nominal fee at the gift shop to aid us. Alternatively, one can choose this 75-minute guided tour .

Note that while the gardens are currently free, there is talk of charging $10 entry to visitors from outside the area beginning sometime in 2023. It was still free when we last visited in March 2023.

Shaws Bird Park 4333 2

Location: 143 Hall Road Hours: 8 am – 7 pm Entry: Free

For me, staring into the eyes of a morepork/ruru perched on my arm was an almost spiritual experience. Certainly, it was something I hadn’t done before.

A 30+ year passion project of Murray and Margaret Shaw, they opened their park to the public in 2018. While walking the 2km of footpaths is peaceful and relaxing, it’s the birds that make this place so magical.

It’s not a zoo, but rather a place for the rehabilitation of rescued native birds, who are released back into the wild once healthy or given a “forever home” when it’s no longer safe for them in the wild.

Sadly, Shaw’s Bird Park is now fighting with the local city council, which wants to put a road through the tranquil bit of paradise, so be sure to check its status before you visit. The story has been featured on TV One’s Seven Sharp .

Trees along the river at Taitua Arboretum, one of the many outdoor things to do in Hamilton New Zealand

Location: 25 Taitua Road, Temple View Hours: 8 am – ½ hour before dusk Entry: Free

Planted by the Mortimer family and gifted to the city in 1997, we found it to be a lovely hidden gem for a stroll or picnic under mature trees or alongside a small lake. There’s plenty of bird life, and we even saw a flock of chicks. There was also a fenced paddock with cows. It’s a nature walk and very different from the manicured Hamilton Gardens.

The main path is an easy stroll around the Arboretum takes about 90 minutes to complete, and consists of two loops, one following after the other. It took us about 40 minutes to do a leisurely stroll along the shorter loop.

Enjoy the Waikato River

Waikato River 3160385

Location: Waikato River runs through the city Hours: always open Entry: Free for walking and cycling, fee for boat adventures

Tree-lined and peaceful, New Zealand’s longest river is enjoyed by locals and visitors as it meanders through the heart of the city. Stroll or cycle on the 11 km Riverside Walkway as it winds alongside the Waikato River through native bush and a few residential areas.

We love to walk, so this was our first choice for enjoying one of the many free things to do in Hamilton NZ

However, if we plan better in the future, we will get out on the water. Visitors tend to take either a relaxing river cruise ( not currently available ) or an exciting jet boat adventure. In contrast, locals are more likely to enjoy the water, getting wet while floating down the river. Reserve an exciting jet boat adventure here .

Riff Raff square

Frank N Furter’s Lab’ encasing the public toilets in Hamilton NZ

Location: Embassy Park, 218 Victoria Street Hours: always open Entry: Free

Riff Raff Square seemed somewhat out of place, as it would in just about any city in the world. It is dedicated to former Hamilton resident Richard O’Brien, who wrote the screenplay Rocky Horror Picture Show and played Riff Raff (the alien from the planet Transsexual).

In the square is a life-sized statue of Riff Raff, instructions for the Time Warp, and ‘Frank N Furter’s Lab’ encasing the public toilets. The statue was designed by Weta Workshop in Wellington (they are the makers of the props for Lord of the Rings and many other films).

For us, Riff Raff Square highlighted our family’s generation gap. It was especially evident from our adult children as Jeff and I did the time warp in the public square. They seemed okay with the jump to the left and a step to the right, but it was the pelvic thrust that had them rolling their eyes. If you ever enjoyed the Rocky Horror picture show, you will find this one of the fun places to visit in Hamilton.

Note: Due to nearby theatre development, the Riff Raff statue temporarily stands in front of the Waikato Museum. However, plans are for it to return to the square .

Indoor things to do in Hamilton NZ

Waikato Museum 3160380

Location: 1 Grantham Street Hours: 10 am – 5 pm daily Entry: Donations welcome (charges apply for some exhibits)

It’s an exciting regional museum with an impressive collection of Māori artefacts featuring a superbly carved waka (war canoe). With frequently changing exhibitions across its 13 galleries, drawing from the museum’s own collection as well as hosting international expositions, there is always something new to see.

And with 130 free events a year at the museum, you’re never short of something to do.

Location: 11 Railside Place, Dinsdale Hours: 7 am – 3 pm weekdays, 8 am – 3 pm weekends  Entry: $20 adults/$8 children (at time of publication )

With over 100 classic cars on display plus petrol memorabilia, vintage toys, pedal cars, and more, this is the place for auto enthusiasts and the whole family. Continue your vintage experience with a meal or snack at the onsite 1950s-themed Jukebox Diner.

More things to do in Hamilton New Zealand

Hamilton 095754

Location: 183 Brymer Road, Baverstock Hours: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm Entry: $26 adults/$13 children (at time of publication )

With over 600 native and exotic species, the Hamilton Zoo is one of the best things to do with kids in Hamilton (or without kids). Focusing on conservation and education, the zoo is also home to New Zealand’s only caracals, tapirs, and fishing cats, as well as New Zealand’s largest walk-through free-fly aviary.

Intermixed with nature, the zoo is a lovely place to walk around while observing the animals in their own simulated natural habitats.

The zoo currently offers six engaging animal encounters allowing visitors to get up close and personal with the animals. Jeff and I opted for the siamang encounter, where we had a remarkable moment feeding these expressive primates. As the siamang looked into my eyes while taking food from my hand, I felt a deep connection with the animal. (Sorry, photos were not allowed)

Additionally, our most recent visit coincided with school holidays, adding excitement with special activities like the porcupine walk. We also got a chance to see the adorable 15-week-old tiger cubs and learn about the zoo’s conservation efforts firsthand.

If you are visiting, save some time to enjoy the viewing tower, which provides breathtaking 360º views of the Hamilton region, and the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park, both of which are free of charge.

There is also a gift shop, cafe, and a small observatory offering monthly public nights (fees apply).

NZ Hamilton Zealong Depositphotos 380848452 L

Location: 495 Gordonton Road, Gordonton Hours: 10 am – 5 pm daily Entry: services and prices vary

Sip a cup of organic pure oolong tea at the tea house, indulge in a high tea, or tour New Zealand’s only tea plantation.

alloons over Waikato Nightglow event on March 27, 2010 in Hamilton, New Zealand.

Location: Claudelands Oval, although balloons are seen over the river Annual Event Entry: free

I don’t normally include these annual events on a “things to do in Hamilton” type list, but this one is just so cool I couldn’t leave it off. Frequently voted the best free event in Waikato, it’s bright, colourful and fun.

Much more than just impressive hot air balloons, this multiday event includes concerts, carnival-type rides, and food trucks.

Typically occurring in early March, check out the Balloons over Waikato official webpage for details.

Nearby things to do in Hamilton’s surrounding Waikato region

Within an hour’s drive in nearly every direction and still, within the Waikato region, you can have one of several unique experiences. Here are a few of the nearby highlights.

  • Surfing, hiking or relaxing in Raglan ( 45-minute drive west) Black sand, stunning scenery, and plenty of cafes, but Raglan’s long rides and challenging breaks make it well known amongst surfers. We loved our visit to Raglan
  • Waitomo Glowworm Caves ( A little over an hour’s drive south ) Enjoy underground caverns featuring limestone formations and thousands of sparkling glowworms, or choose a caving adventure. Check for discount options on a triple cave combo .
  • Hobbiton ( 50-minute drive east in Matamata via SH1 ) This is the real middle earth and is often thought of amongst Lord of the Rings fans as one of the top places to visit on the North Island. Available only via tour. ➜ Reserve your Hobbiton and Waitomo Cave tour from Auckland .
  • Hakarimata Summit Track ( 20-minute drive northwest) A 2km return walking path that climbs 374m to the summit of Hakarimata , offering impressive views towards the coast and out to Ruapehu across the Waikato Basin. This one is still on my list of things to do in Hamilton, but I have been told at times, it feels like an endless staircase but is well worth it once at the top. There are optional, much longer walks here.
  • Sanctuary Mountain  ( 50-minute drive southeast on SH3 in Pukeatua ) A place to see takahe , tuatara, giant weta, and kaka in New Zealand’s largest mainland fenced sanctuary, located on Mount Maungatautari.
  • Cambridge , a nearby quaint town well known for sporting success, it’s also a wonderful place to spend a romantic weekend. We hit the highlights of Cambridge .

Where is Hamilton?

We typically stop in Hamilton when we road trip from Auckland to Wellington , Auckland to Tauranga , or even Auckland to New Plymouth .

Hamilton is 125 km southwest of Auckland  (New Zealand’s largest city), 103 km northwest of Rotorua (New Zealand’s geothermal region), and 500 km north of Wellington (New Zealand’s capital city). There are four ways to get to Hamilton: self-drive, take a bus, fly, or via train.

  • Driving to Hamilton is easy, with state highways 1 and 3 intersecting just south of the city centre.
  • There is a daily bus service from Auckland, Wellington or Rotorua. Reserve your bus tickets here .
  • Air New Zealand offers domestic flights from Wellington.
  • Hamilton is one of the stops along the Northern Explorer scenic route from Auckland to Wellington.

Depending on what you are looking for, we have three recommendations:

Hamilton 182019

Rua Resort Our top pick for a Hamilton accommodation is Rua Resort, which we’ve featured in the photos above for good reason. This impressive estate offers tastefully decorated and spacious rooms with tall ceilings and comfortable beds.

Each room has its own unique charm. We opted to stay in the Harmony suite—a luxurious retreat complete with two balconies, a super king bed, a spacious bathroom, and a delightful hidden surprise: a Harry Potter-themed room.

One more thing that sets Rua Resort apart is the opportunity to interact with their rescue animals, from friendly sheep to charming alpacas. To top it off, our breakfast was expertly prepared by a chef, adding a touch of delight to our mornings.

Rua Resort currently ranks as the top accommodation in Hamilton on TripAdvisor for value. With luxurious rooms, delicious breakfast, and an affordable price tag, it’s easy to see why this resort is a favorite among travelers seeking comfort and style.

Read the room descriptions before selecting and note that some of the rooms have a shared bathroom. Reserve your stay at Rua Resort here .

Ohaupo Olives Bed and Breakfast If you are looking for a self-contained unit in peaceful surroundings with delightful hosts, this is it. Surrounded by an olive grove and veggie garden, the unit itself is charming. Breakfast is included and served at the main house or out on their lovely deck. It’s an opportunity to talk to the hosts, meet other guests, enjoy the landscape, or just pet the cats.  Reserve your room at Ohaupo Olives here .

Jet Park Hamilton Airport Hotel and Conference Centre If you prefer a more traditional hotel room, I had a great night’s sleep in an incredibly comfortable bed. The rooms are clean and have everything we need. If we had more time, we would have enjoyed the gym, sauna, outdoor pool or even the tennis court.  Reserve your room at Jet Park here .

A few random but cool things about the city

  • Jacinda Ardern, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand, was born in Hamilton.
  • Also born here was Helen Clark, a current administrator of the UN Development Programme and former New Zealand Prime Minister.
  • Hamilton has four sister cities: Sacramento, California USA; Saitama, Japan; and both Wuxi and Chengdu in the People’s Republic of China.

Great post, I grew up in Hamilton and didn’t know about the sister cities

June 7, 2020 at 1:42 pm

Looks like a great city!

June 5, 2020 at 10:06 am

Yep, I’m one of those who’ve never heard of Hamilton. It looks delightful though!! And it’s so close to places I’d love to visit, like the gloworm cave and Hobbiton. The Hamilton Gardens look spectacular – that Italian villa is gorgeous!

June 4, 2020 at 10:21 pm

Wow that is a great list of things one can do in Hamilton. Museums are high on my list. Loved the pots of the Tea Estate. The gardens of course is very high on my list.

June 4, 2020 at 12:39 pm

I love to visit cities that are not popular with tourists, so this appears to be the place to go when in New Zealand. I should love to visit those gardens, see all four, and how different they are, would be a wonderful way to spend a full day. And, a stroll along the river in early morning or evening sounds lovely to me.

Wow, I had limited knowledge about Hamilton. Thanks for introducing this beautiful destination. The first thing that attracted me is the garden and greenery. Was wondering how beautiful it would be to have a house there. It’s a perfect city guide for travelers. Fun facts are good addition.

June 3, 2020 at 6:45 pm

I know a few Kiwis who are embarrassed to be from Hamilton, but the river looks ok! I can’t wait to get back to New Zealand but I wonder if it will be the North Island, I can’t keep my husband away from the South Island!

New Zealand is and will always be a very big dream for me, hopefully I can see Hamilton, Queenstown, Rotorua and many more places on your beautiful country someday 🙂

Your posts give me the “itch” for traveling, but I wouldn’t trust it yet – not with the uncertainty due to coronavirus.

We were very sorry we had to cancel our visit to New Zealand this year. We had not got around to detailed planning. But now I know to put Hamilton on the itinerary. Good to know that many of the attractions are free. And that there are such great outdoor green spaces in the city. We would definitely look to rent bikes and bike the Waikato river path. Although a cruise along the river might be a nice way to enjoy the views. We love to do High Tea when we travel. So we now know where to do it in Hamilton!

Hamilton is a city that I have not heard of before, even when I have read of New Zealand before. I think if you ask me about the first thing I will choose to do in Hamilton, it will be visiting the Hamilton Gardens for sure. I will surely take the 75-min guided walking tour. It intrigued me the most.

June 2, 2020 at 3:27 am

My kids would love to visit the Hamilton Zoo. They are just so interested with animals that we make sure to visit the zoo in all of our trips abroad. We believe that this is best opportunity for them to see different animals living in the different parts of the world.

Anyway, thank you for sharing this and we hope to visit Hamilton soon. 🙂

Love the idea of riff raff square. We have visited the glow worm canes but missed here on our tour of New Zealand 20 years ago. When we return I think it would be a great place to stop.

June 1, 2020 at 9:37 pm

Hamilton definitely has several to do things but my favourite is the Outdoor Hamilton Garden. It’s great to see a Tudor Garden here and I absolutely love a Japanese garden. It must be very calming to sit by the Japanese Garden. This reminds me of Dubai Miracle Gardens.

June 1, 2020 at 8:04 pm

The wonderful thing about visiting Gardens is you can never be in the position to say that, I’ve seen one so I’ve seen them all! I’ve seen many different Japanese gardens across the world (because these are my favorite style of garden), maybe because they’re the ones that are most foreign to me. But no matter how many I’ve seen each one offers something different. I love that the Hamilton gardens also has a Tudor garden, You don’t see many of those around the world. Great but it’s also free to walk around

I definitely did not pay Hamilton enough attention on my road trip it seems! Those gardens look incredible, I am a little gutted I missed them. I am planning on going to New Zealand again as soon as I can though so I’ll have to go back!

June 1, 2020 at 12:56 pm

I have been to Hamilton couple of times. But I was not aware that one can do so many things 😀. The only thing that I knew it was famous for was the glow worm caves and Hobbiton. The next time I visit, I must keep this list so I can refer back and visit the places I have missed.

Thank you for a wonderful guide to this beautiful city of New Zealand. Although I knew about this place as a close friend of mine stays there, this is the first time I came to know so much more. Waikato river, Hamilton gardens and the tea estate would be of special interest to me.

June 1, 2020 at 3:36 am

New Zealand has always been on my bucket list. I will have to make sure to hit Hamilton when I get a chance to visit this country. I would love to see the Hamilton Gardens.

June 1, 2020 at 2:01 am

Wow, there’s so many interesting things to see in Hamilton! New Zealand has been on my bucket list for years – I’ll be sure to check out this cool city when I eventually come to visit! Thanks for sharing such an informative post 🙂

Hamilton in New Zealand has so much to offer! We love to bike so we would definitely bike along the Waikato river! It’s also interesting that there is a tea plantation in New Zealand, must also visit that. And of course I wouldn’t miss the Glowworm cave or the Hobbiton! Hope to be able to visit New Zealand one day and we will visit Hamilton for sure!

May 29, 2020 at 11:56 am

There are so many wonderful places to visit in New Zealand and Hamilton is definitely one of them. Thanks for letting me know about this overseen city. I love the abundance of exotic gardens in Hamilton! I could spend an entire day in each one of them. Leave alone visiting Zealong Tea Estate and the famous Hobbiton, just 50 minutes away.

Hi Rhonda – lots to do I see – and presumably a quiet city … so fairly easy and less crowded to walk around. I think a few days there would be great – and I’d love to see the glow-worm caves … but New Zealand I’d be grateful to get to one day … all the best – Hilary

2 Days in Hamilton Itinerary (by a local!)

Whether you’re just in Hamilton for a weekend trip or are as part of a bigger North Island trip , 2 days in Hamilton is the perfect amount of time to see the city.

There aren’t many New Zealand cities with a better mix of attractions and nature than Hamilton and this 2 day Hamilton itinerary has some of both included for the ultimate Hamilton weekend or day trip.

New Zealand ‘s fourth-largest city is often overlooked as a travel destination but Hamilton, built around the Waikato River, is the ideal stop-off on your way between Auckland to the north and the mountains or beaches to the south. If you are doing a New Zealand road trip , you have to visit Hamilton.

I grew up in Hamilton and love to show off my hometown so you can be assured that this Hamilton itinerary really is a local’s guide with lots of hidden gems and hot tips, as well as the big-ticket attractions you can’t miss.

2 Days in Hamilton Weekend Itinerary

Bonus: friday night – arriving in hamilton.

Celebrate the weekend with great food and drink at one of the Good George Brew Bars in Rototuna (in North Hamilton) or Frankton (on the south side of the city).

Good George is Hamilton’s original craft beer brewer and is now popular nationwide and even in Australia. The Frankton outlet offers brewery tours otherwise you can find their full range available at all venues as well as reliably good pub food and a buzzing atmosphere. Try the Doris Plum Cider or one of the new gins.

If you’re looking for something a bit fancier then try the tapas selection at Gothenburg restaurant, it’s got an unbeatable location right on the river. Then wind up the night with a cocktail at Wonderhorse Bar.

Day 1 in Hamilton

Start the day the right way with brunch at The Kirk Cafe in Hamilton East. This was originally the office of St Andrews Presbyterian church but has now been transformed into Hamilton’s most Instagrammable café with breakfasts that look too good to eat.

person holding plate of brunch food

If you’re feeling the need to walk off brunch, you can head down to the riverfront path that runs the length of the city. You can access the path by each of the five bridges in the central city or off the main street.

The shaded path looks quite magical on winter mornings with the fog rolling off the Waikato River and is very popular with local runners and cyclists.

Otherwise, if you have kids head to Lake Rotoroa where there’s an enormous playground. You can also stroll along the 1.7km boardwalk that loops around the lake passing many of the city’s most ostentatious houses.

Quite often there are rowing, sailing or dragon-boating regattas taking place on the lake that you can watch from the playground or as you walk. The Verandah Cafe by the lake is also quite good.

These are also great running spots, I’ve got a running guide covering Hamilton here .

lake Rotorua shore with gardens and trees hamilton

Pop up from the river path onto Victoria Street in the CBD and head to the Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato . Here you can learn about the region’s history and its Maori founders and see Te Winika, an original 200-year old waka gifted by the previous Maori queen.

Once you’ve had your fill of history, it’s only a short walk down to The Riverbank Lane for lunch. Try a range of fresh Vietnamese plates at Banh Mi Caphe or grab a table overlooking the river at Mr. Pickles.

Whatever you choose, definitely don’t miss Duck Island Ice Cream. This innovative ice cream store has quickly become a Hamilton institution, offering Kiwi favourites like fairy bread and lolly cake as well as unique combinations like roasted white chocolate miso.

duck island icecream, place to eat in hamilton new zealand

After lunch, spend a lazy afternoon digging through the second-hand books at Browsers Bookstore (also in Riverbank Lane) and the shops along Victoria Street.

Day 2 in Hamilton

The Waikato Farmers Market is the place to be on Sunday morning. Held at the Claudelands showgrounds (after it outgrew its riverside home), the market showcases the best produce of the region. You can find excellent coffee here and all the stallholders are happy to offer samples and a chat.

Make sure to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch to take with you when you head off to the Hamilton Gardens on the eastern end of the city. The collection of themed gardens is deservedly famous but rarely busy.

You can book a Hamilton Gardens Walking Tour where a local guide will fill you in on all the detail of each garden theme, or explore at your own pace.

Make sure to check out the Italian Renaissance and Indian gardens which are popular spots for photos before finding a spot for lunch on one of the lawns (avoid the lack unless you want to fight off ducks).

italian renaissance garden attraction hamilton nz

If you need to recaffeinate after the trip to the gardens, drop into Grey Street Kitchen in Hamilton East. The barista here has won several national awards.

While you’re there, you might find a hidden treasure in Hamilton East’s weekend flea markets, or otherwise, stop into one of the boutiques down the laneways off Grey Street. My favourite is Love Lane, which has everything from a plant boutique to yoga.

How to Get To Hamilton, New Zealand

Driving to hamilton from auckland.

Hamilton is 1.5 hours’ drive south of Auckland on State Highway 1. You can hire a car from Auckland Airport where there are a number of major rental companies.

Getting to Hamilton By Bus

The Intercity bus runs services between Hamilton and Auckland (stopping at the airport, city centre and Manukau) several times a day. Fares start from $20 per adult and are cheaper if booked well in advance.

For more info and tips for travelling by bus, check out my New Zealand by bus travel guide.

Getting to Hamilton By Train

There is a Hamilton-Auckland train that runs from Frankton in Hamiltons’ Southwestern suburbs to The Strand on Auckland’s Waterfront.

It’s very convenient and usually cheaper than the bus, but departure times are very limited (twice a day during the week and once on weekends).

Flying to Hamilton, New Zealand

Domestic passengers can fly into Hamilton Airport from Wellington or Christchurch with 2-3 flights from either city most days. These are regional routes operated by Air New Zealand so the planes are smaller and tickets can be very expensive if booked at short notice.

I recommend signing up for Air New Zealand’s Grabaseat emails and waiting for a sale.

Where to Stay in Hamilton for the Weekend

Best luxury accommodation in hamilton, new zealand.

There are no real luxury hotels in Hamilton itself. However, there are a few country estates in the outskirts of the city that are beautiful and peaceful if you have a car and are willing to stay a bit further out. Willowbrook Park and Narrows Landing are both set on extensive estates and are also popular as wedding venues.

In the city itself, there are some higher-end Airbnb and rental-home type accommodations. Awa Retreat is on the street I used to live on and is a stunning property right by the river.

Best Mid-range accommodation in Hamilton, New Zealand

The Novotel Tainui and Ibis Tainui (pronounced tie-no-ee) are Hamilton’s biggest hotels and are reliable options popular with business travellers.

My family have stayed in both several times and have been happy with the facilities. Both are located next to the river so the more expensive rooms come with good views.

Best Budget Accommodation in Hamilton, New Zealand

Hamilton’s hostel scene is fairly limited however there are a couple of options that are close to the CBD. The Backpacker’s Central Hamilton is small but functional and right on the main road.

Where to watch Canada Day fireworks in the Hamilton, Halton and Niagara Region

First Published:

This year’s Canada Day holiday marks the country’s 157th year since it confederated in 1867.

To mark the occasion, festivities will be taking place across the nation. Many opt to spend the federal holiday with friends and family, with a day of barbequing, getting outdoors, and most notably, watching fireworks shows once the sun goes down.

Across the Hamilton, Halton, and Niagara Region, there are several chances to catch an evening pyrotechnics display.

Hamilton residents will have several options to celebrate the day with fireworks.

The city’s Bayfront Park will host a Canada Day celebration starting at 1 p.m., with live music, food trucks, activities for the kids, and a fireworks show that kicks off at 10 p.m.

The event is free to attend, but parking will be limited. Residents are encouraged to take one of the many public transit options. HSR will offer free shuttle rides from the city’s core to the park.

Another display will take place at the Ancaster Fairgrounds in Jerseyville. Admission is $5, and fireworks will begin at 10 p.m.

Halton Region

The City of Burlington will be celebrating the event at Spencer Smith Park. Burlington Transit is offering a free Canada Day shuttle to the park. Pickup begins at noon from the Mainway Arena.

The celebrations will feature live music, food, a drone show at 9:30 p.m. and a fireworks display at 10 p.m.

In Oakville, a Canada Day celebration will take place at the Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park. It starts at 4 p.m. and will feature performances from local community groups, face painting, and live music.

Oakville Transit offers free rides to the event from the Bronte GO Station starting at 3:45 p.m., with shuttles running every 10 minutes.

Fireworks are scheduled for 10 p.m.

Niagara Region

Those living in Niagara Falls can expect to see the falls lit up in red and white at the top of every hour until 10 p.m. when the city puts on its pyrotechnics display at 10 p.m.

St. Catharines will host a fireworks display at Lakeside Park. Throughout the day, several live concerts will be held until 8 p.m., and fireworks will close out the day shortly after the final set.

Lookout at Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays Island

The 8 best things to do in the Whitsundays and Hamilton Island

Fly over the world-famous Heart Reef, snorkel with turtles and cruise over coral in a sea kayak

Photograph: Tourism and Events Queensland | Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays Island

Melissa Woodley

Did you know that more than 1,500 weddings take place each year in the Whitsunday Islands? It’s easy to see why: Instagram-worthy landmarks like Heart Reef and secluded, long white stretches are very romantic. But you don’t need to fork out for honeymoon -priced hotel rooms to enjoy a tropical weekend getaway to the world-famous islands of the Great Barrier Reef .

Just 55 kilometres off the Queensland coast, the Whitsundays comprise 74 tropical islands, most popularly Hamilton Island, Hayman Island and Daydream Island. There’s no wrong way to explore the islands – whether you’re relaxing on the silica-white sands of Whitehaven Beach ( ranked fifth best in the world ), wandering through the national parks (fun fact: the Whitsundays is 70 per cent national park), or snorkelling with thousands of brightly coloured fish in the Great Barrier Reef.

With a little planning, you can jet off for an adventure-filled weekend that’ll cost you less than a flight to Bali. Here are the best things to do in the Whitsunday Islands.

RECOMMENDED: The most beautiful islands in Australia .

Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.

The best things to do in the Whitsundays

Swim in australia's best beach.

Swim in Australia's best beach

If Australia's 12,000 beaches had one reigning star, it would undoubtedly be Whitehaven in the shimmering, azure waters of the Whitsundays. This beach, on the traditional lands of the Ngaro people, is set within a World Heritage-listed national park, and regularly features at number one on ' best beach in the world ' lists – and for good reason. This pristine paradise has sand that's 98 per cent silica (meaning it's whiter and softer than pretty much anywhere in the world), the warm turquoise waters of the Coral Sea, and a general kind of stunning beauty that normally isn't seen outside of postcards. Other popular beaches to explore in the Whitsundays include Betty’s Beach and Turtle Bay on Whitsunday Island, Chalkie’s Beach on Haslewood Island, Catseye Beach on Hamilton Island and Crayfish Beach on Hook Island.

Marvel at Heart Reef from the skies

Marvel at Heart Reef from the skies

The best photographs of the Whitsundays are taken from up high. Those aqua swirls of powder-blue sea and white silica sand are blindingly bright and just as beautiful as you’d imagine. If the heart-shaped coral formation tops your bucket list, this is the way to see it. Hamilton Island Air has flown stars like Oprah over the famous Heart Reef and Whitehaven Beach. They offer 12 scenic helicopter and seaplane flights where you can take in breathtaking aerial views of all the major landmarks, and even enjoy a rockstar water landing on Whitehaven Beach . If you’ve come in winter (and you should – the average temperature is 26 degrees), you’ll likely spot humpback whales on their migration from Antarctica. In summer, you might see turtles, tiger sharks and bottlenose dolphins.

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

Snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the world, so missing out on a face-to-face meeting when in the Whitsundays is unconscionable. As the world’s largest coral reef, it comprises more than 3,000 reefs and 1,050 islands, with popular snorkelling spots including Stonehaven Bay, Luncheon Bay and Mantaray Bay . There are also public moorings at Langford Island, Blue Pearl Bay and Chalkie’s Beach , where you can swim alongside squids, turtles and a myriad of psychedelic fish.

Watch the sunrise from South East Head

Watch the sunrise from South East Head

Considering the Whitsundays in 70 per cent national park, you’ll have no trouble finding somewhere to stretch your legs and feel the sand between your toes. One of the Whitsundays’ most popular walks is the 4.4-kilometre South East Head Trail on Hamilton Island, which starts at Catseye Beach and takes you to a gigantic chair at the summit. It’s worth waking up early, so you can watch the sunrise over the swirling patterns of turquoise water below. Pack a picnic breakfast and your swimmers for a dip en route home. Other popular trails include the 1.3-kilometre Hill Inlet   Lookout Track on Whitsunday Island, the incredibly scenic eight-kilometre Honeyeater Lookout Walk , or the more challenging 28-kilometre Conway Circuit , which can be completed over two to three days.

Relax at Australia’s most famous private island resort

Relax at Australia’s most famous private island resort

Escape to your very own piece of paradise with a stay at InterContinental Hayman Island. The resort is home to a spectacular suite of poolside villas, beachfront pavilions and double-storey residences, with many offering million-dollar views of the Whitsundays’ sparkly blue waters. You can unwind in private plunge pools, seek shade under the exclusive waterfront cabanas, melt away stress with a hot stone massage, and enjoy a seafood buffet at sunset. Or just take it easy; you're on island time now.

Go kayaking

Go kayaking

Family-run business Salty Dog Sea Kayaking has been running expeditions in the Whitsundays since ’96, and they say the best way to get around the chain of offshore islands is by gliding along the ocean’s surface. And when the water is as clear as glass, we’re inclined to agree. Owner Neill Kennedy and his wife and sons run half-day, full-day and six-day tours from Shute Harbour – or they’ll pick you up at your accommodation if you ask nicely. Their most popular trip is the half-day tour inner island turtle tour, including double kayaks, snorkelling gear, snacks and stinger suits (essential if you’re visiting from November to June). You’ll likely spot turtles in the calm turquoise waters and rock wallabies on the rugged shoreline. Depending on the time of year, you might even get close to whales and dolphins in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. If it’s warm enough, the team at Salty Dog will find a suitably accessible cove so you can cool off with a refreshing swim.

Bring the family to Daydream Island

Bring the family to Daydream Island

With its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush tropical gardens, Daydream Island certainly lives up to its name. You have all the best parts of the Whitsundays right at your fingertips, with the resort providing free stand-up paddle boards, kayaks, catamarans, snorkelling equipment, rainforest walks and an open-air cinema, plus organised sunset cruises, ocean rafting and Great Barrier Reef tours. You can also get up close and personal with a variety of marine life in the resort's remarkable Living Reef, an expansive outdoor aquarium that wraps around the resort and is home to more than 100 local marine species.

Accommodation options at Daydream Island range from stylishly appointed rooms to spacious suites, all featuring modern amenities and stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Families are also well-catered, with a dedicated kids’ club and activities, including wildlife experiences, outdoor games and crafts.

Test your swing at Hamilton Island Golf Club

Test your swing at Hamilton Island Golf Club

If touring a lush tropical island in the Whitsundays wasn’t opulent enough, Hamilton added the option for day trippers and guests to hop on over to Dent Island for 18 holes of some of the world’s most challenging golf. The steep terrain, wild winds and some unruly bushland are a recipe for an above-par experience (both figuratively and literally). Ferries will cart you over from Hamilton Island, with a two-seated bugger also included in the cost of your round. After your testing plays, settle in at the Clubhouse golf course with panoramic water views. For budding golfing enthusiasts, there’s a family-friendly driving range and a mini golf course back on Hamilton Island.

‘General Hospital’: Michael Easton Announces Shock Exit From Show (VIDEO)

Michael Easton Instagram

The Doctor Is In

For exclusive news and updates, subscribe to our general hospital newsletter :.

Michael Easton will no longer be appearing as Hamilton Finn in daytime soap General Hospital . The longtime daytime TV actor announced his exit from the show in an Instagram video posted early Wednesday morning.

“I’ve always been partial to the Irish goodbye. That’s where you leave the party without actually telling anyone you’re gone,” Easton says in the video. “But I thought you all deserved better, so I just wanted to let you know that I just filmed my final scenes here at  General Hospital. ”

Easton worked as Detective John McBain on  One Life to Live   from 2003 to 2012, when it was announced he would reprise the same role on General Hospital.

(However, due to legal issues, it was later announced in 2013 that Easton would have to exit General Hospital  as his character to return in a brand new role.)

“I’ve loved every minute that I’ve been here. I want to thank the entire cast and crew for allowing me to share their stage this past 10 years,” he continues. “Most importantly, I want to thank all of you for the kindness and love you’ve shown me and my family. I won’t ever forget you. And as I walk out here for the last time, and with apologies to the great Lou Gehrig, I feel like the luckiest man on the face of the Earth.”

Easton’s new General Hospital character Silas Clay was killed off in August 2016. Six months later, he returned as new character, Dr. Hamilton Finn – an infectious disease specialist and epidemiologist who owns a bearded dragon named Roxy. For his role as Dr. Finn, he received a Daytime Emmy nomination in 2018.

Easton’s exit announcement follows  General Hospital ‘s surprise news that Jonathan Jackson will be returning as Lucky Spencer later this summer .  It was also announced on Monday that Bryan Craig will be reprising the role of Morgan Corinthos on  General Hospital  for one episode in August (though it is unclear how Morgan will return since the character was killed in a car bomb in 2016).
